Hi hello I have been knee deep in a genre binge so here are some literary sci-fi books that deal with loneliness as a core theme

I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman
Translated from French this book follows the youngest girl in a group of 40 women who are being kept in a cage underground in an unknown place, for unknown reasons, until one day they get the chance to escape triggering a search for answers and survival on a desolate surface.
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
This is a very subtle dystopian story about a group of people who spend their childhoods at an extremely secretive english boarding school, the course of their relationships, and where they are at the end of their lives. There's a subtle feeling of wrongness from the first chapter and the author spends the rest of the novel very slowly revealing the reasons why.
Everything You Ever Wanted by Luiza Sauma
The super short form pitch for this book is 'Fleabag if there was an option to yeet herself to another planet'. Iris is in a long term relationship with depression, kind of hates her pointless job, sometimes hates her family, and is generally overwhelmed by the weight of existence, when she hears about Nyx - earth's first space colony - and thinks that just maybe it could be the answer to all her problems.
Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon
When the population of a company sponsored colony finds out they have been designated a failure and the people are to be packed up and shipped off to another planet to try again, one little old lady decides that for the first time in her long life she's going to break the rules - she's going to stay and live her best life alone on the planet, and finally get some peace and quiet. What could go wrong?
Skyward Inn by Aliya Whiteley
Skyward Inn is an odd little book set in a future where Earth has come into contact with an alien world that quickly surrendered to humanity. The story follows a small group of kind of unlikeable people who live behind the walls of the 'western protectorate' - a place in the moors that's decided to isolate itself and live like the old days with rudimentary technology for a simple life. Until strangers appear and things start to get... weird. Slower, stranger and with more body horror than you might expect.

@satanicspinosaurus I hope you don't mind me making a new post to reply to this-- The story I put on my reblog just made the original post chunky so I wanted it to be easier for people to find Burrows's lore >.<
Burrow's is actually missing their right eye, I'm not sure if my art conveyed it but those are mushrooms coming out of where it used to be. They also have fungal growth on their right arm, similar to the what's on the spore zombies you can resurrect as a sporemancer.
When Burrows awoke from the landing of the nautiloid, they had very strong intrusive thoughts/urges regarding their very physically active tadpole. They feel it moving a lot even by the time they reach Baldur's Gate. So in order to remove it (decided this before even knowing Volo would do something similar) Burrows tried to get around their eye and manually grab the tadpole/remove it. They ended up maiming themself, and got an infection-- In the end, since they are a spore druid, they managed to fight off the resulting sickness with a fungi that eats bacteria.
The problem is the fungi is "beneficial" for eating the bacteria, so it can't be healed away. And since Burrows is so strongly tied to nature for their survival (tl;dr backstory reasons) the fungi can only survive if it can feed off the bacteria, which makes the bacteria "beneficial" as nutrients for the fungi. So they're just kind of. Stuck with it. For now anyway.

Had curry for dinner
Got to tidy the tubs off of the kitchen table and back into their cupboard. Managed to organise them better so there's more space in the cupboard too.

one of the best things about agents of shield is that it does all of the tropes, way over the top trauma, character revivals, alternate reality plots, evil versions of characters, betrayals, mind control, time travel plots, etc., things which are usually done either way too seriously or as a cheap joke/low effort filler content that sometimes doesnt fit the tone or show it happens in at all.
but it does them properly the way theyre supposed to be, integrating them into its world, and it shows why they are actually popular and that they work if you spend any real effort on them and try to do them justice instead of always playing them as a cliché trope.
yeah, its an interesting storyline to see the goodhearted main character be turned evil against their will and then deal with the fallout. whod have thunk.
and at the same time it manages to not lose the kind of campy feel associated with them, in a really charming way. i dont know if im making sense, i just waited for a really long time for someone to actually do these things right cause they have so much potential, and they usually dont get to explore it beyond very superficial levels.
agents of shield is awesome. fin.
