One of the most frequently asked questions I get asked is how do I manage to get my kids eating their fruits and veggies? If you are mother and believe in mindful eating habits you will know how much of a struggle it can be to get kids to eat their fruit and vegetables. I struggled for first couple of years before I managed to get hold of some rather good tips . You know what's better than saying "this food is good for you"? Tell them what foods do in their body! Why the body needs it ? Because we keep selling our kids short, labelling foods and good/bad, healthy/unhealthy. I found these messages helpful for Aary&Zavi . When I started introducing them to fruits I broke it down by color. Although it's not 100% accurate, it’s a good framework to get started. ⁣⠀⁠⠀ 🔴Red: gives you a strong heart⁣⠀⁠⠀ 🟠Orange: helps you see in the dark⁣⠀⁠⠀ 🟡Yellow: helps your body heal cuts⁣⠀⁠⠀ 🟢Green: gives you super powers to fight off sickness⁣⠀⁠⠀ 🔵🟣Blue and Purple: Give you a strong brain⁣⠀⁠⠀ ⚪️White: gives you energy⁣ When they were 4 and 5 I started being more specific - like carrots and sweet potatoes help you to see in the dark. Clementines help your skin heal cuts. Broccoli helps your night vision, your skin heal, AND your bones to be strong.⁠⠀ Now when they are 5 and 6 I’m introducing the concept of vitamins and minerals - telling them HOW carrots protect their night vision (via vitamin A). Teaching them about the body.⁠⠀ Keeping this formula in your head, you can work around your kids age. For 7s 8s and 9s you can teach them even more about different things in foods. ⁠⠀ And so on.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ All the while, model the way you want your kids to eat in your home and serve them the balanced diet you want them to eat. It's an important distinction to know!⁠ ⁠ Gagging can be common in those first few months of eating, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing! Gagging is actually your baby's way of preventing choking, as it helps to get the piece of food out of their mouth before they choke on it.⁠ ⁠ Choking happens when a food makes it past your baby's gag reflex, and ends up in their windpipe.⁠ ⁠ Most of what people call choking is actually gagging! Gagging can be very dramatic, have your baby end up with a red face, lots of coughing, and can even result in vomiting. It's not pretty, no. But it's not choking.⁠ ⁠ When your baby is gagging, the best thing you can do is let them figure it out! Don't show them you're scared, don't show them you're anxious, don't get up and pat them on the back. Just let them work it out themselves!⁠ ⁠ If your baby is choking, it is often a much quieter event. They might turn blue, have a little cough that really doesn't function to get anything out, but they generally don't make noise! If this is happening, then you need to intervene immediately. Regardless of what method you are using to feed your baby (purees OR baby led weaning), someone should be CPR certified in your house, or at the very least know what to do when choking occurs.⁠ ⁠ Hands down the best way to prevent choking is to use safe feeding practices.
