Mike knew Will was talking about himself and that he loves him back (he knows the painting was for someone Will liked because of El's letter) because Will mentioned things they talked about in the prevous scenes and Mike also used El's name as a cover at rink o mania so he knew Will was doing the same thing

so he said those things because he thinks those were El's feelings and that she commissioned the painting, so he felt like he owed it to her and he was feeling guilty for the fact that he can't love her even though he tried to

so now they both think it's unrequited and they'll prove each other wrong after Mike finds out Will lied about the painting and loves him back (probably during the mlvn break up) and he's gonna kiss Will
plus they decided to put "you're the heart" as the soundtrack title because that's what gave Mike the determination to say those things

ME RANTING ABOUT MISINFORMATION ABOUT BAGI AND WHAT NOT
A missing piece people don't realize about the workers' murder arc is that Bagi was not all that bothered by the workers' death at first, she was more worried about how Cucurucho would retaliate and also by the cannibalism, because yeah, cannibalism doesn't exactly scream mental health.
It was seeing the grief of the living workers that changed her profoundly, it filled her with guilt. And I cannot help but think of young Bagi who didn't have a body to bury, didn't have closure, and refused to even acknowledge the possibility that her brother was dead, being so moved by such an open sight of mourning.
Bagi ran herself stressed not knowing a way to help Cellbit AND stop the murders, she refused any solution that would harm him, she went after talking with people who were close with Cellbit and whom she also trusted to not turn information to the Feds. I am sick and tired to people saying "Bagi told random people about the murders". List of islanders Bagi actually told: Roier, Bad, Pac, and Mike. All who were in one way or another connected to enigmas themselves. People who she knew had more information about Cellbit past or that she thought deserved to know for their own safety.
Bagi never called Cellbit a monster or even insinuated he would hurt the eggs, I really don't know where this misinformation came from. In the separate scenes of Bagi and Bad confronting Cellbit they were they quite literally saying he was more than a murderer, and that he was being consumed by his history of violence
(Also, I get it that watching your blorbo drown in blood is fun and all. But like, did you watch Cellbit's story and believe he turned back into a murderer and being brought back to the violent cycle he was forced into is a good thing? Did watch him seeing his childhood room for the first time and asking himself what he did to deserve to be taken away from his family and made to kill people to be able to survive? Did you see that and then when he told Bagi he didn't care if he died again because he died enough time and did not get that Cellbit murdering people is also him losing grasp on the importance of life itself? Did you not get that this was not a developing arc for him? This was him at his fucking worst after having the best things in his life taken again, again and again. Murder was not enrichment for him, it was a poison that killed parts of him too)
Anyway. That is for now. I think. Just a lot of shit I needed to get out of my chest.

During his emotionally charged speech in the van, Will says one particularly potent line.
"When you're different... You feel like... a mistake."
This line is highlighted visually by the camera shifting positions to outside of the van, a shot that is only used one other time to punctuate the end of the scene. This line holds extra weight and the show wants you to know it.
I already made an analysis on the word mistake and what that means for Will, but I want to look at the word different, which feels emphasized in the delivery of the line as well.
"When you're [pause for effect] different..."
It's popular headcanon among st fandom that "everyone in Hawkins is gay!" which sometimes bleeds from into their belief of real canon. Sexuality headcanon lists suddenly are seen with an air of truth to them, and a number of fanon queer ships are accompanied with evidence of their supposed endgame status.
I realize that this is kind of a... weird post to make. I'm not really making this to tell people to stop doing something, this is more of just a rattling off of some opinions I've had for awhile.
I do wanna start off with the obligatory: Do whatever the hell you want. I'm not here to stop you from doing something or tell you that you are wrong for thinking that a character is gay or for shipping something. You are allowed to ship whoever you want, think whatever you want about any character, any ship I don't like I have filtered. But I'm also allowed to not like these ships, or disagree with how others view certain characters. Just as others are allowed to have and express their opinion, I'm also allowed to have and state my opinions on the opinion website.
I think the important thing regarding Will being different is the fact that he is different. As my good friend @karenchildress once put it, if everyone were queer, it would cheapen the message the show is trying to give. Sure, the show displays a variety of ways of being different, but being gay is, among other things Will has been through re: being taken into the Upside Down, is Will's way of being different in Hawkins.
And of course Robin is gay as well, and while there is some crossover, the lived experiences of a gay man is different from that of a lesbian woman, which the show does touch on. Will's story is part of an extended AIDS metaphor, and Robin struggles to gain the attention of women in a world that seems to revolve around the attention of men.
It might be nice to have a moment between Will and Robin, although that alone won't solve Will's problem, i.e. his belief that being different makes him a mistake. Cause that's the thing: the resolution is that being different is a good thing.
If everyone character were queer, this would cheapen the message. Suddenly the resolution isn't that being different is a good thing, but that he isn't different after all.
So then, are queer stories meant to have only token characters?
I think it depends on the type of story, and what it's trying to say. Heartstopper has an eclectic queer cast, but it's also a show that embraces finding community and other people like you. Sex Education has a variety of different sexual identities, but it's also a show that aims to explore a lot of different perspectives.
And there are also queer stories where the queer character's disposition, and their struggle because of that, is a big part of the story. I believe this is what this show is trying to do— highlight Will's difference and how that pertains to his personal struggle and the resolution of that.
One argument that I hear against Will with powers is the idea that making him more different would be bad for his character, because he hates being different. But the thing is, Will is going to learn that his differences are a good thing, which may include any possible powers.
Of course Will isn't the only one with powers, and he also isn't the only gay one. El, Henry, and Kali all have powers, and Robin, Vickie, and Mike (and maybe Henry? I haven't seen TFS myself so I'm not commenting on that) are all gay. So while he's not alone, these things are still a rarity. It's not a case of a headcanon list with mostly everyone gay and some token straights.
"Characters are not straight by default."
This sentiment isn't unique to the st fandom and also didn't originate within this fandom, but it is something that I hear often. And it's... not really true, although it kind of depends on the piece of media we are talking about. It might be easy to say this about a show made in the 2020's, although this same sentiment is hard to state about, well, most shows made before the 2020s. And even then, it depends on what the show is going for.
People being not straight by default is a true statement in real life. You shouldn't assume a sexuality for anyone, gay, straight or what have you. But characters are made by people, and people have different biases on how these characters should be written. Calling the Duffers "two straight men" would go against what I just said, although I don't think that the show was written with everyone being gay in mind. Aside from the 4 (maybe 5) I listed, the other characters are not written to be queer. They just aren't.
All of the queer characters have arcs that feature their queerness. Will's queerness has been mentioned since season one. Robin's romance becomes part of her plot in season 4, and Vickie is introduced as her love interest. Romance has always been an important facet of Mike's story since season one, and his failure in a straight romance is highlighted in seasons three and four. Chekhov's painting of season 4 seems to solidify a gay Mike.
Elmax and Ronance as endgame options not only have no lead up but are also mean spirited towards Lucas and Vickie. Elmax gets together, breaking up Lumax, which has been built up since season two, and Lucas is supposed to be okay with this because????? Ronance get's together, effectively writing off a queer character that the show had introduced, and she can't even fulfill the reason she exists in the first place? Rockie is not the most well developed relationship out there, but it's the one that the show has decided to go for. Maybe Ronance could work, in an alternate universe where the show actually wrote that in.
For those that argue that both Max and Nancy are queer I simply... disagree. And you can disagree with me too, we'll both just agree to disagree. I'm not against headcanons, which are usually harmless, but also usually driven by the desires of the headcanon-er and less so the canon of the show. Which again, is fine, but it's also these headcanons which are being used to drive an argument for actual show canon. Usually the argument for any character being queer that wasn't already listed in canon rests solely on vibes, not any concrete evidence that may suggest actual attraction to the same sex.
More substantial evidence usually comes when someone applies a queer lens to a certain character, but an interpretation can be different from authorial intent. And sometimes, the viewer may be so focused on the metaphorical, that they fail to see the literal.
I do think that you could easily apply a queer lens to El's story. Her story is about, in her words, "not belonging," in society, having to remain in hiding, and deviating from feminine norms. I can easily see how you can derive a queer message from this, but all of the traits listed above are a result of her having powers and being raised in a lab, not being attracted to the same sex. Metaphor alone cannot prove that she likes girls.
Going back to Nancy, Nancy's romantic options are between Jonathan and Steve, although the show seems to make it clear that it's going with Jonathan in the end, what with Jancy holding hands at the end of season 4. Steve get's brought up in conversation between the two, alluding two some unresolved tension that's likely to be brought up in season 5, and Robin is... at the high school with Vickie. That is the end of the season establishing the arcs and romances for the final season.
"Gay people didn't exist in the 80's."
That's an argument on the opposite end of things that just isn't true, although I've also heard the counter for this argument, that gay people did in fact exist in the 80's, as evidence that everyone is gay. I'm not really here to argue whether or not gay people existed in the 80's (they did) I'm just here to argue what I think the canon of the show is presenting.
That being said, the show taking place in the 80's is still significant. It may not be a hyperrealistic depiction of the 80's, but the show does seem to understand the idea that at that time, it was very difficult for gay people come out and to start relationships. It's the reason that Robin can't just go up to Vickie and ask her out, and it's the reason that Will can't just say that the painting is from him. It's the reason why Mike hasn't quite yet left his relationship with El and accepted himself. It's the reason why Rockie has to discreetly flirt through peanut butter sandwiches. A character who hasn't had queerness built into their plot, or a relationship that has no buildup, isn't suddenly going to become canon in the last season.
I was talking about this once with a friend who used the show Only Murders in the Building as an example. In the shows second season, Selena Gomez's character is revealed to be bisexual and dates a character that Cara Delevingne plays for most of the season. The show doesn't build up to her character being bisexual, she doesn't come out as such, the other characters don't make a big deal out of it, she just is. So why can this show do something like that but Stranger Things can't?
Well, Only Murders is a show that takes place in present day, and is a light-hearted comedy (albeit with murder). A character suddenly being bisexual with no set up makes sense for the tone that the show has established and when it takes place. Stranger Things takes place in the 80's and establishes within it's first season and maintains it throughout that gay people get killed and are seen as social pariahs.
It's not that I don't understand where the desire to have more characters be queer comes from, especially characters that people already like and relate to. I don't think it's harmful to think that these characters are queer, I'm making an argument purely with regard to authorial intent and the actual outcome of the show. Again, feel free to disagree with me and continue to do whatever you want, these are just some thoughts that I have had on my mind for a while and wanted to put out.

I am the number one mike gets vecna'd truther. I have damn near 100% confidence that mike gets vecna'd. there is no version of s5 that I can imagine where mike doesn't get vecna'd. he will be shown horrendous visions and he will scream and cry and veccy boy will get his homophobic dog moment and mike is gonna be shaken up and refusing to tell anyone what he saw and it will be the most important, impactful, and jaw dropping vecna scene of the season, and I will be pulling up the cristiano ronaldo gif

This post by @aurorabyler about the similarities between the songs Being Different, The First Lie, and The First I love You got me thinking.
Because it's not just that, it's not just the melodies. It's the fact that I adjusted the tempos a little bit, and that's all it took for the songs to sync up perfectly.
And they're so beautiful together. They really do complete each other. Literally I was speechless when I finally found the right spot in Being Different to sync with the other songs, because I couldn't believe how they were all just identical.
It's overwhelmingly clear that these tracks directly, intentionally, and specifically reference each other. That all of these scenes that the melody appears in are tied to themes of miscommunication/lies, love, subversion of expectations, and queerness/atypical relationships.
...you know what, fuck it, here comes the analysis. Seven characters, four scenes, three tracks, one melody. The four themes I mentioned are typically present throughout the entirety of each scene, but I think they can also serve as a sort of formula- a narrative each scene follows.
When Nancy and Jonathan hook up for the first time:
Miscommunication/lies: They'd been refusing to acknowledge the true nature of their relationship.
Love: They admit their feelings for each other.
Subversion of expectations: Their feelings are requited.
Queerness/atypical relationships: The popular girl fell for the outcast!
When Robin comes out to Steve:
Miscommunication/lies: Robin has been hiding her sexuality, and Steve mistakenly believes he has a chance with her.
Love: Steve has feelings for Robin. Robin admits that she had a crush on Tammy Thompson.
Subversion of expectations: Steve was not expecting this news, but he doesn't get upset.
Queerness/atypical relationships: Robin is a lesbian. Steve wholeheartedly accepts her and still treasures their platonic relationship!
When El kisses Mike:
Miscommunication/lies: El had previously broken up with Mike over the fact that he kept lying to her and making up excuses to avoid her.
Love: El remembers hearing Mike say that he loves her back in the cabin.
Subversion of expectations: She reveals that she heard him say this, and, in return, confesses her own love for Mike. She kisses him and tries to mend their relationship.
Queerness/atypical relationships: Mike doesn't kiss her back or seem to return her sentiment. He stands there, watches her leave, and looks confused. Despite what it may look like on the surface, they are not romantically in love! And maybe he's not as straight as he thought he was...
When Will delivers his veiled confession to Mike:
Miscommunication/lies: Will lies about the painting and uses El's name to cover up his own feelings.
Love: Will is in love with Mike. He wants to confess how much he's struggled without him, and how deeply he values Mike in his life.
Subversion of expectations: Since he uses El's name, his attempt to verbalize his feelings falls short of its original purpose.
Queerness/atypical relationships: Will is gay and in love with his best friend... But maybe this love isn't actually unrequited!
Seven characters, four scenes, three tracks, one melody.
Okay. I'm tempted to believe that maybe the Duffel Bags really are mad geniuses now, because holy shit.

crazy how people will see you bring up literal scenes from the show, quotes by the duffers, actors, casting director, and costume dept, as well as the stranger things bible/first pitch, and be like "you're so dumb and offensive, that's NOT will, i'm so sick of will being babied and 'fEmiNizEd' blah blah blah" like girl maybe you just don't like women or will byers. have you ever considered that?
maybe YOU'RE the one failing to watch this show with your eyes and ears open if you're out here straight up denying scenes from the show itself. maybe YOU'RE the one failing to see that will has always been brave not despite his fear but because of it, and it's LITERALLY his bravery that inspires mike to start a search party and kickstarts the show. maybe YOU'RE the one that has super regressive, small-minded, and one-dimensional views on what bravery looks like, what strength looks like, and all the different ways there are to be not only a man, but a person in general.
like i just don't know how you can think you possibly know more than the actual people that make this show and dedicate literal years of their lives to making it the best it can possibly be and most accurate to their creative vision LOL like. sometimes you're just wrong!!! suck it up and go find another character that you'd actually like more instead of taking one that's impressively complex and cared for in ways that we seldom see in media!! much less media as globally popular and impactful as this one is, and esp not when it comes to gay male characters!!
will is complex and layered and beloved by many precisely because of that very complexity and capacity to be many things at once that you are so bafflingly intent on erasing!! if you find yourself disagreeing with canon & the creators to the point where you have to completely remove his most important traits and reject the literal show itself, then the fact of the matter is that you just don't like him!! AND THAT'S OKAY! but at least be honest with yourself instead of digging yourself deeper and deeper into a pit of denial and trying to make it seem like the duffers are the crazy ones here and not the fucking stranger things equivalent to flat earthers like 🤦‍♂️

just thinking about character arcs and how they might play into byler getting together... i alluded to this in my recent analysis, but mike's whole arc is heavily centered on his invisibility, both in regard to his queerness and also his generally being invalidated and dismissed by those around him, while his romantic arc with will (and one of the main ways in which will is a foil to el in their respective relationships with mike) is about being Seen and Understood and Validated.
on the other hand, will's arc centers around his lack of agency and his self-repression. yes, he's already confessed his feelings to mike, given him the painting, "ripped off the band-aid," etc, but he did that For Mike and El, and i don't think it's fair to say that means he's given up hope for himself, or even that the ball is in mike's court now (they're a team anyway. they're working together). will's arc is also about his resilience, his willingness to fight for what he wants and what he believes in. it's about re-claiming the agency that has always been taken from him, and standing fully in his truth, by his own volition.
putting these two arcs together? mike is going to finally be seen, truly, fully, for everything he is, by will. and will is going to understand. he's going to take the initiative, finally claim agency over his own sexuality and at the same time validate mike's, giving them both exactly what they've been striving for all along.

Howdy Caroline, I saw a post about Talk shop Tuesday so I thought I'd be nosy on main. I wonder, how does research factor into your fic writing, and what was the most taxing research you had to do for a fic? 🐸
oooh hi, iva!!! thank you so much for shooting the ask--god knows i always love talking about fic!
to answer your question: i think most of my fic-related research is limited to "what episode did character x do this/say that", just so that i have the timeline of events down. i know it's not the end of the world if i don't perfectly remember how a certain scene went down, but i can't help it--i like being precise when it comes to at least recalling canon events.
outside of that specific brand of research (just making sure my timeline/recitation of quotes is all set), i'll sometimes do wilder research for like ... au projects that are set in a different time. that doesn't happen often (i think the reason why i tend not to write au's that are set other than present day is specifically because i get overwhelmed by the amount of research to be done), but when it does, i'm usually stuck researching for hours. that's probably why i just never got around to posting this one period jwds au i have. the plot keeps shifting, mostly to suit the research that i've done. deep sigh. one day i swear i'll finish writing that story and post it, but right now it's just gotten a little away from me. it's marinating.
outside of that story though, i think i've been lucky enough to not need to do too much research for fics . . . maybe that'll change one day (especially if i ever fall in love with a more period-drama-esque story), but ! ! ! as of now, i think my research time really only takes up 10 - 15% of my fic writing process.

Not going to lie though, when Will said “friends? What friends?” to El in the airport, I cringed a little, because while we know that El doesn’t actually have friends, Mike believes she does. And because he doesn’t truly know what’s going on with her in Lenora, Will saying that was, well, kind of a jerk move in Mike’s point of view. Just think about it. Mike’s listening to El talk excitedly about the plans she has for them, and when the topic of her friends comes up Will scoffs, “Friends? What friends?”, which to Mike sounds more like “friends? You don’t have any friends.” Instead of what it truly was: “why are you lying about having friends?”. Just a thought.

Lighting and Mike and Will and El - Full Analysis (pt.29.1)
Alright, so. There is so much going on during the monologue that I’m going to split it in to multiple parts- just before, the start, the middle, the end. But for each of those sections (pt. 29,30,31,32) I’m going to go over that part again in post like this where I analyze the lines spoken and how they relate to the lighting and symbols. This section will be going over the same part of the scene, but it’ll be like a different look at it. Kinda like I did in the van scene where I looked at some of their lines, but because there’s so much going on I’m making them separate posts. 
S4:E9 - Ears and Eyes (Groundwork)

“El- El can you hear me?”
El starts choking and Mike grabs her hand (the one with Hoppers bracelet), she’s got the pizza goggles on and is in the water. Mike is asking her if she can hear him, while she has the pizza goggles over her eyes. She can hear him, but right now she can’t see him.

“El, c’mon- wake up!” 
“Get her out” - Will
Mike keeps yelling at El to wake up, while Will is actually the first one to say that they need to get her out. It’s a bit hard to hear and I actually had to rewind it a few times to figure out what Will was saying. This would actually make sense that we don’t hear Will all that well because this seems to be El’s perspective and Mike is the closest and loudest in relation to her. This line also interesting because while Mike seems to be the one taking initiative here, it’s Will who’s pushing him to do it- multiple times. Even before ‘you’re the heart.’

“Wake up, El! Wake up!”
“She can’t breath” - Jonathan
Jonathan’s line here is also fainter than Mike’s. The Surfer Boy Pizza crew isn’t really doing much to help in this situation- no ones really said anything helpful other than Will. Mike is telling El to wake up and asking if she can hear him- she’s awake and she can hear him. She’s already doing that.

Mike continues to say things that don’t help at all. She’s trapped and she can’t get out of there, her bodies still with them, and Max is dying. That isn’t really an option. It’s very clear that there is a lot that Mike doesn’t know about the situation.

“Wake up! El, wake up! Wake up!”
Mike tells El to wake up and then throws off the pizza goggles. Actions speak louder than words, and what it seems to be saying here is that El needs to see not listen.

“Help me, help me!”
Mike is the one asking the others to help him, but Will’s the one hitting Mike’s arm. Mike is doing what Will’s telling him to.

“On the table. Get her on the table”
Will is the one that moves to hit the music player off the table- he and Mike are working very in synch. Mike’s just the one doing the talking.

“El, can you hear me?”

“El, El!”

“Can you hear me? El, El!”
Mike again asks if El can hear him, and the vines tighten around her throat. She can hear him, she’s been listening to him the whole time, but she can’t speak.

“Mike-” - Will
This shot seems to be from El’s angle/perspective. The goggles are off, and she can’t speak. She’s awake already, and she has been able to hear Mike the whole time- but now it seems that she can see him. And now she can see Will, and Will’s voice gets a lot clearer. 
El’s been listening to Mike since she met him. During their fight over the letters in El’s room Mike says, “you’ve seen it- I’ve been bullied my whole life.” And then El brushes past this- because she hasn’t seen it. She hasn’t been able to see Mike until this moment. 
Mike’s words in the monologue don’t mean very much- because El isn’t being struck with the realization of Mike’s words. She’s listening to him- and she can tell he’s lying. But it doesn’t matter what he’s saying. El is looking up at him (her eyes aren’t open but she’s looking- the angle of the camera and other shots and later when we can see her looking up point to that) and she sees everything written on his face. 
She sees him. 
And she sees Will right beside him.
Mike Wheeler she knows what you are.
