- The NHL has agreed to the termination and the NHLPA does not seem to intend to appeal it either. (Read: whatever happened was bad enough and provable enough that they don't want to get involved and lose face.)

- As per GM Kyle Davidson in his press conference, "no players or their families were involved", and to say otherwise is "frankly disgusting". (Read: stop with the Perry fucked Bedsy's mom rumors.)

- Also as per Kyle from Chicago, the incident(s?) in question DID happen at work and were a "personnel matter". (Read: likely had to do with Perry and a Hawks employee.)

- Davidson also said they're trying to "change culture" and "have a culture of accountability". (Read: workplace harassment?)

- What happened was "very disturbing". (Read: possibly Perry was verbally harassing a Hawks employee, or even physically/sexually, but it was bad enough to disturb the GM of the racist team with the history of sexual assault.)

- That being said, "law enforcement is not involved". (Read: likely did not reach the level to warrant criminal prosecution, but bad enough that the NHLPA will not appeal, which is a very thin line to walk.)

Hello I need to talk about my ship headcannons SO LETS GO

In the show:

twilight X Pinkie: this was not what I used to ship. I used to ship Pinkie and Rainbow and while I still think that's a cute pairing, I don't think anyone in a 5 mile radius would survive if those 2 were together. TwiPie was something I didn't expect to ship but the art honestly convinced me, and I think their dynamic could be super cute. Maybe twilight could calm pinkie down a bit while pinkie gets twily out of her shell more.

Applejack X Rarity: I ship it more in EG than in the show but i like both versions. I could never really see applejack and rainbow dash together tbh. I kinda headcannon that they did try but ultimately figured that they werent great for each other, and thus AJ got with Rarity instead.

Fluttershy X Discord: I can't not ship it. They married. You can't argue with it. They married and fluttershy goes to live with discord in his dimension. Discord made it so that fluttershy can always move freely though the 2 dimensions, making her the only pony capable of doing so, ever.

Starlight Glimmer X a sack of dirt: don't like her she can eat dirt

Starlight Glimmer X Trixie: okay fine she can have Trixie but ONLY IF SHE PLAYS NICE.

Pear Butter X Chiffon Swirl: they at least dated at some point. Chiffon loved her a lot but knew they wanted to lead different lives. She broke it off but they always stayed very close friends.

Fluttershy X Rainbow Dash: again a ship I wasn't sold on immediately, but I'll always be a sucker for childhood besties to lovers, and I notice that Rainbow is often the reason for Fluttershy to push herself out of her comfort zone and often improves as a direct result of it. Rainbow is Uber protective of Flutters but also learns a great deal about patience.

Sunset Shimmer x Pinkie Pie: these 2 are in a QPR. they live together and are very physically close with each other. Worlds tightest dymamic duo. They love gaming together, but Sunset often likes to play more brutal shooters while pinkie likes old games or slice of life games. So when Pinkie notices Sunny needs to blow off some steam she puts on a shooter for her while pinkie watches and lays on her lap.

Sunset Shimmer x Sci Twi: sunset is always a confident flirt but when it comes to twi she's an honest mess. Twi finds it super adorable tho, and slowly figures out Sunny's feelings (with tanks to the wingman skills of Pinkie) Twi is okay with the dynamic between Sunny and Pinkie, and also becomes pretty close with Pinkie. While she often sleeps over at their appartment, she really prefers to have her own space so doesn't move in with them. Sunny is very understanding.

AJ x Rarity: I mean duh, even the staff ships it. I like EG RariJack more than show/pony RariJack. I think they can admire and bond over each others love for their little sister, and often go out with the 4 of them. Its brought sweetie and Rarity closer as well.

Anyways, she’s been done for a few days now, I just forgot to post, this is Spicy Roll Cookie

So she’s an absolute sweetheart, she just tends to be really loud. She’s great at giving motivational pep talks, and she’s someone you’d want as a friend. She’s also an incredibly powerful fighter. I didn’t draw her with a weapon, but she is supposed to have an axe, as shown by me trying to sketch one out somewhat in the top

She’s a Paladin in the Crème Republic, and tends to be more fond of their types of outfits, but she still has some fondness for her Dragon’s Valley heritage

That’s about it for her, I mostly just have vibes

As for her name, she’s basically just a cinnamon roll, but spicy. It was because pastry + spicy. I remember this pairing was giving me a lot of trouble because I didn’t know how to combine the two, and I eventually just kind of made something up. But I still like the name

Cinnamon roll:

I was considering making her color scheme more brown/orange, to fit in with the cinnamon roll thing, but ah well I suppose. That is half the reason her dough’s brown, as well as it just working as a medium between Kouign Amann and Capsaicin. And it’s also the reason she has all those swirls

Oh, another thing I should mention, this wasn’t the original design I made for Spicy Roll. It’s not that much different, but it is somewhat different

I had asked my Discord group if it looked good, since I had been watching Venture Bros while working on her, and I felt like I hadn’t been giving Spicy Roll my full attention as a result. I got some critiques and changed her accordingly. I do think the final design looks better tbh, but I still have some fondness for this version

I also did it on the same layer as the original lineart, so this you see here is the only physical proof of the original design

Anyways, back to her actual design, because I took a detour there

So when I was first rough sketching her back some time ago, I had planned on giving her the down facing horns, but I couldn’t get a hairstyle that looked good with it, so she got shelved temporarily. But I think I have something that works now

Her diamond pupils were supposed to be like a combination of Capsaicin’s slit pupils and Kouign Amann’s heart eyes. With the colors of Capsaicin’s eyes semi reversed because I like it better that way, at least on Spicy Roll

And yeah I think that’s all I have to say on her design right now. I like it overall

Oh wait, one last thing about her, in the notes on my list, the original first thing I put was “Barbenheimer?” Since I think that was going on or had just gone on at the time of the first request

You had been rambling and talking about things that had happened not long ago between you and some friends. Some drama..

He only listened, watching you wave your hands around as you talked, your expression only pitched into an angry one.

He found it funny, watching you stomp around and pout because of this. It was silly.

Finally deciding to cut you off, Springtrap let out a grunt, as if clearing his throat to get your attention. Which it did.

You turned to look at Springtrap, blinking and pausing in place. You waited for him to speak, looking down at him.

“Darling.. come sit next to me instead.” He rasped, head nodding to the spot in front off him.

You sighed, nodding your head and sitting down just in front of him. “Sorry- I’m just really upset about this.” You frowned, crossing your arms.

Springtrap gave a slight nod, “I know.” He hummed, heading tilting. “Why don’t you relax? Take a deep breath.”

You bit your lip, before doing exactly that. You took a deep breath, letting out another sigh. “..Thank you.” You muttered, giving Springtrap a small smile.

Springtrap hummed. “Now, tell me what’s happening?” He shifted a little, leaning forward and giving you his full attention. “Calmly.” He added.

You let out a small chuckle, before starting to explain your little drama, Springtrap nodding and listening. He would cut in with small comments or solutions as well, which you thought was sweet.. and a little funny.

You continued to talk the rest of the night, switching topics. It was mostly about yourself, and that was okay. Springtrap liked listening to you anyway.

last night, i had a bit of a shame spiral thinking about all the time energy money i devoted to the 1d fandom. i felt embarrassed for being so loud about something that ended in so much disappointment. it wasn't fun and i know it was probably triggered by being involved in some discussions i hadn't been in so long

so when i opened this ask, anon, it reminded me so much that whatever was lost from that time, so much more was gained. the embarrassment of remembering dancing around like a fool with a rainbow flag for someone who couldn't even say something as simple as "look at all those colors" pales in comparison to the lifelong friendship i gained with these 8 beautiful women all across the globe

nothing will ever compare to the people i met and the way they feel closer to family than any of my blood ever felt

Not sure if they're checking for any responses, but mostly I wanted to agree. I haven't been in many fandoms, but even the main one I'm in now is alot more "cliquey" compared to years ago when RP and ask blogs were still really common. Now, alot of RP is mostly in Discord, and while I agree the messaging is easier/better than on Tumblr, Discord groups feel more closed off and gatekeepy at times. Plus my OTP is a NOTP for alot of people in the fandom, and I'm not interested in the juggernaut ships, so I get left out of alot of fandom events.

Tbh, I know it's not for everyone, but I've done better in a multi-fandom server I joined compared to any of the servers that are specific to the fandom I'm in. The one I joined I only did,cuz the admin is someone I already knew from my main fandom. I knew they were fair and kind, and they had modding experience in other servers, and it's been overall a great experience, until the server unfortunately died a while back, just due to the admin and other mods having irl stuff come up and take up all their time.

The only other server I've had a good time in was one that's specifically for fic writers in the fandom, which has events and showcases fics of people in the server, so it's alot of us pumping each other up and infodumping about our ideas and AUs.

Something I've had to learn to look out for when going into servers is in rules. Channels that state people's triggers and squicks is well-meaning, but unfortunately, in every server I've been in that had that turned into a wankfest sooner or later, usually with 2 or 3 BNFs in the server attacking each other or smaller creators in the server, using things in the trigger and squick list to harass or claim they were being harassed. Similar wankfests happened if the server has a list of topics and/or ships that aren't allowed to be talked about. Even if someone doesn't mention a forbidden topic/ship in the server, if they post stuff about it on Tumblr, Twitter, or ao3, they usually end up getting attacked in the server or just straight-up banned.

The servers I had/have good times had few if any forbidden tropes/topics/ships. If anything, it was only asked they only got mentioned in certain channels. The few times any wank came up, it got shut down within the same day.

Unfortunately, I don't have any advice for navigating fandom on Tumblr (and I avoid fandom spaces on Instagram and Twitter). I tend to just keep to myself on here, only ever talking to 2 or 3 people and not even all that much.

I hope you're okay, #4234. I'm in a small fandom, too, and I know that gossip runs rampant, so people end up hearing about callouts, even if they don't see the actual post. I've never been in that situation, so I don't know if this is good advice or not, but I'd suggest only sticking to talking to a few people for now. There will be some people who will refuse to interact with you, but even if others aren't actively reaching out, there are others who don't believe the callout, whether cuz they know the person posting it isn't credible or they've become skeptical when it comes to callout posts in general. So there will still be people willing to hear you out, if you choose to stay in that fandom and try making friends in it again.

Definitely close your asks (or at least close anon) if you haven't done that already, and depending on the level of harassment you're getting, I'd suggest making your posts nonrebloggable. I'm not sure if you're a creator in the fandom, so I know it can hurt to keep creating and not get any notes, but it's better than people reblogging your art, edits or writing only to add hurtful comments to keep harassing you.

I might not know who you are, but I'm rooting for you and hope you'll find a space in fandom (current one or another fandom if you decide to move on) that welcomes you.

Posting since this is a response to a previous problem.

So.. I have a long story about this; (please read for context!) I used to be friends with this kid in elementary school, they were my best friend and we hung out all the time!! Something we bonded over was Pokémon and as a kid. My first game was Soul Silver which yeah is pretty late into the 'series' of Pokemon but it's whatever, that was my first game, don't judge. Anyway, I was kinda (very) dumb and just eventually got rid of my Pokémon stuff. Idk why I ever did shit like that (I regret it so much) and I have really bad memory so like.. I had no idea what I did with any of my games. Well, remember that friend I mentioned? We reconnected a few months ago after almost 10 years of not talking (because we moved when I was about 11 and.. being 11 year old's we didn't have a way to keep contact lmao. I tried looking for them over Facebook for YEARS with no luck, but a few months ago I had randomly found their profile and messaged them.) When we reconnected, we called on discord and they were talking about Pokémon and they said "Oh dude, by the way I still have your soul silver game that you gave me" and I was like "... wait what?" and.. yeah!! Apparently I had given them my soul silver as a kid (I guess that was my 'getting out of Pokémon phase', like I said, I was dumb..) and I was just in pure disbelief. And they said if I wanted, I could have the game back so today (yesterday since I'm posting this at like 4 am) I hung out with them and they handed it to me. My *original* copy of Soul Silver. The copy I played as an 8 year old.. (or 9 year old idk, bad memory) I can't tell you what it means to have my original cartridge. Sadly my save file isn't there since when I gave it to them in childhood, they restarted it.. but that's okay, the fact I have THE VERY COPY I had as a kid, still means the world to me. Like.. I just.. yeah I could've re-bought the game over the years but.. having the exact one I had as a kid.. it means more than I can ever express. I'm so fuckin' excited to play this game you don't understand. What advice do you have for someone hoping to start making money with art? I'm new to everything so building an audience and engaging with them feels like me shooting in the dark, let alone getting them to request commissions or join a Patreon!

Hi there!

I think you have the biggest part of it already figured out tbh. If you're aiming for it to be a side hustle kind of thing, then building an audience is definitely one of the best ways to go about it if you wanna stick to online. The way it's been for me, it's all been through fandoms and niche art. I drew a ton of fanart for Shadowhunters back in 2017, but it wasn't until I got into making fanart for Attack on Titan (mostly merfolk AU stuff) in 2018 that I really became more "visible" as an artist. Back in 2017 I had some commissioners, but from 2018 onwards is how I truly became a full time artist.

There's people who have the fortune of making it big with their own original art from the very beginning, and that's wonderful. But it's not something I can give you advice on, because I haven't figured that out myself, and it's not how I got here either. I know it's possible, however, so that's definitely always an option too.

As frustrating as it is, I think there's no real way around it. You need an audience who's interested in what you have to share, and a lot of it can become making art that caters to what your audience is interested in. So be very careful with how you go about it. I'd say just draw what YOU like, what YOU want to see. Most likely, there are others out there who want to see the same thing too. Algorithms online make it harder for people to find you, and it's very tiresome to adapt to them, but there's no way around it except keep pushing, keep trying, follow other artists, make friends with them. Comment on art, share art, join discord servers, talk with people. Interaction will take you a long way in this circle!

If you're not afraid of taking your art outside of the online market, there's always conventions, exhibitions and bazaars/markets in most cities, where you can take prints, stickers and other merch with your creations. They also work wonderfully as contact makers. You'll get to meet other artists in your area, and they can help spread word about your work, and you can do the same for them, aside from directly putting your work literally out there for people to see.

If you want advice on how to become a professional artist, getting studio jobs and such, I'm definitely not the right person to ask. I have no experience on that other than applying and getting rejected or "saved for later". Not that I've tried much tbh, I've been ok enough with freelance work.

I've worked mostly on commissions for individuals who just want a specific piece of their favorite character, and I've also worked on commissions for self publishing authors and one major awarded, published author in my country as well. All of it, just because I started an askblog about Merman!Levi when I was bored, depressed, and going through Big Shit irl. So an art journey can have many crazy looks.

I'm not sure how helpful this will be, because I'm honestly not the best example of How To become An Artist. I've had so many ups and downs, currently going through a major down. And the only thing consistent about my journey, is that I haven't given up. So I guess that has to mean something, as cheesy as it may sound.

He’s soooo cute omg his hair is curly and he’s so super dorky and like literally would fit in so well on tumblr? Sometimes I want to tell him he should make a tumblr. Idk if he would care much about any content on here also there’s content of *him* on here (some of which I may or not have queued that I made) but idk he’s just sooo cute.

So I was watching this twitch stream and the twitch stream featured a YouTuber who was promoting a series that was a giant collab, and I was like “well I’m not watching anything after this twitch stream” so I started watching that series and from the MOMENT this boy was on screen I was like oh my god. I was CAPTIVATED. In the series there’s a roasting and his roast was that he had “crackhead uncle energy” and when he heard that he was literally kicking his miss-matched socks and giggling. I was just so enamored like wow this guy is my exact type and I would LOVE to be friends with him, so it’s been SO COOL talking to him one-on-one. I would love to be some level of friends with him but I’m also very aware that I am coming to him as a fan of his content and his band.

He’s going out on tour with his band in March and I’m going to try and go see them because the initial thing I messaged him was to ask if they did any sort of meet-and-greet because he has a sticker collection and I’d love to make him some stickers.

A part of me really wants to talk about who it is exactly that I’ve been talking to but a part of me worries that in talking about what we’ve talked about I’ve like. Said too much about his personal life even though everything he’s told me pretty much he’s said online elsewhere and I try to be really careful what I say about him. If I do see him on tour I at least want to make a short video with him for content for my blog.

I really want to reach the point where I could be friends with him outside of being just a fan, and my friends have been really supportive of it saying like “you never know!” And stuff like that but I’m also trying to be realistic and not get my hopes up too much. Like, I would loooove to do cutesy things like make out with him and stuff because like… who doesn’t want to make out with the lead singer of their favorite band/celebrity crush lmao but like REALISTICALLY I just want to be someone who can DM him on discord and maybe feature on an episode of his podcast or something. School has once again reminded me that I don’t know how to socialize. Which sadly, applies to the online too haha. I don’t know, it’s... hard to say or talk about anything when it’s a 2-way communication. I think i have many friends from Sky or maybe other social media too but man it’s just hard to get close. I don’t even have charms or cheerful energy (a little self-depricating no?), I want to put more effort into that tho. One time I helped college’s orientation I worked with this one person. We don’t know each other but oh boy he got along with everyone so well and talked to everyone including me like we knew each other before. I really want to be at least half of that hahaha.

WHAT IS YOUR OTP FOR YOUR CHARACTER(S)? I actually don't have a set OTP for Corvus at least not canonically. (I did at one point but tbh it's mostly something that stays outside of tumblr and written on discord with someone only because I don't like anyone feeling like that's why I'm writing with their character.)

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE? With Corvus ranging from 20-26 in all of their verses, I'd say even 18 is pushing it if they're 26 in the verse it's happening in, but I'm not unwilling as long as the muse is 18+. However, ages older than them don't bother me in the slightest it's just rare they attract to someone much older than them. If it happens it happens.

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY ARE CONSIDERED NSFW? Honestly, I tend to consider even heavy petting nsfw to be tagged just for the sake of others but I believe stuff considered nsfw doesn't have to be sexual. It can be anything more gory or violent in general. But anything going beyond that in sexual terms I've never written with anyone other than with my best friend through discord so I can't exactly definitively say what I consider that to be. So just. Baseline I guess LMAO.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING? That depends! I'm not exactly super selective when it comes to it as long as our characters possibly have some type of chemistry to work with. Like I don't mind shipping characters who seem to hate each other because that's how every good enemies to lovers or enemies to friends plot starts, but if they obviously don't have even a speck of attraction to or willingness to get along with each other that's obviously where it would fall through. I'm usually fairly easy going about it though, it just takes some talking about it because of how Corvus can be in terms of trusting others depending on the verse.

WHO ARE OTHER CHARACTERS YOU SHIP YOUR CHARACTER WITH? @poeticphoenix Genesis and @poisonpicked Rio comes to mind automatically because those are just. Chef kiss. And of course I will always feel lovingly obligated to mention @prismpowa Corvus' best friend @pluviacuratio a friend that Corvus trusts. And tbh so far Corvus is happy to have Nia as their 3 AM gaming buddy in their villain verse @sleepdeprxved.

DOES ONE HAVE TO ASK TO SHIP WITH YOU? Asking is usually appreciated, but if your muse is simply acting how your muse does and it happens naturally I'm always good with that too. Of course I might eventually I'm gonna crawl over to you to discuss it if my anxiety allows me, but 9 times out of 10 if you ship the thing I probably ship the thing. If you want to send the meme then send the meme etc. I tend to just go with the flow on it so if you burst aggressively into my DMs I'm likely to just "yes".

ARE YOU SHIP OBSESSED OR SHIP MORE-OR-LESS? Ship more-or-less. I say that confidently because even if I am easy going about making connections for Corvus, I'm here simply to have fun and write as well as to enjoy writing them with others. Even if nothing comes out of an interaction with someone, it was still an important in terms of developing the character and I still had fun. That's what matters at the end of the day. Our muses don't have to form a bond for us to enjoy writing together, and on that note, they especially don't have to form a positive one. Enemies are always welcome for them to be a little shit to.

ARE YOU MULTISHIP? Yes! I don't really have any desire to limit them there. There isn't really much I have to say about that either besides the only time I wouldn't multiship is if a verse called for it and it felt right.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SHIP IN YOUR CURRENT FANDOM? I don't really have any favorite ships in Corvus' main verse fandom and tbh I barely have any within any of the fandoms for their other verses. I've never been someone who was big on shipping canon characters all that much. It's not that I dislike it, but I've never really been struck with the interest to do so. I usually get so focused on the plot that my brain doesn't exactly think about pairing the characters. The most I've been hit with shipping characters is... well, here.

As for myself:

1. Are you named after anyone? Yes! My mom wanted to give me a "hippie" name like Freedom or Windsong or something, but my dad would have none of it. In one of their rare instances of compromise, they settled on naming me after a folk/pop singer who was big in the 70s. If I decide to change it at some point, I'll probably choose something very similar in spelling/sound.

2. When was the last time you cried? Like two days ago while thinking about a scene where a character experiences Gender Thoughts (positive). And the day before that while listening to talks on medieval history about humans being humans. Then last weekend, while watching Puss In Boots with my partner. Look, it's not outright sobbing and tears, but I do mist up a lot, okay? For someone who had to numb their emotions to survive much of their childhood and teen years, I appreciate this actually. That despite whatever pain I've experienced it couldn't stop me from recognizing and overflowing at the pleasure and beauty all around me.

3. Do you have kids? No, and no plans to. I'm content with my affection for the children of others in my life.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? I think so? I definitely used to, though I think I've cut back on it significantly.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people? The way they speak and how they communicate in general. Accents, idioms, whether they're confident (and if that confidence is bravado or well-founded), is their choice of words vibe-based or definition-based, etc. I'll recognize someone's voice before their face tbh. 😅

6. What’s your eye color? Brown. I get compliments on them.

7. Scary movies or happy endings? Both? Depends on my mood. I always love a "hard-earned happy ending", though. Those Situations really did a number on my blorbos, but they kept on keeping on. That sort of thing.

I read the post about people not using the ask feature anymore. So three asks:

Hey there, Anon! Ooh these are some great questions that have got me thinking this Friday evening, so thank you for sending them 😊

I'll put my answers under the cut, as er, they got a little long and rambling, oops lol.

1. Do you think the ask feature has been decimated by Discord Servers? I find that's where most of my fandom discussions happen nowadays. It's collaborative and less clunky once you get a critical mass of like minded people.

Yes, I think Discord has definitely played a part, especially since Tumblr got rid of its group chat function. I don’t know what they were thinking with that decision tbh. It was a feature I actually used and it was nice to be able to talk to several mutuals at once without it being completely public.

Not everyone on Tumblr necessarily uses or wants to use an entirely different platform to communicate. I’ve tried a couple of Discord groups and one I liked because it was quiet and manageable (although it’s defunct now). I knew everyone in the group pretty well and we used to be in a Tumblr group chat together. The other one was people I didn’t know very well who all liked the same show, but it was too fast paced for me to keep up with. And nearly everyone else was in a different time zone, or knew each other better, so there wasn’t much point in showing up hours after the conversation ended, scrolling through tonnes of messages just to add something that was mostly ignored anyway lol.

I think Discord serves a purpose for existing friends wanting to chat in private, or if a subgroup of a bigger fandom wants to congregate somewhere, but as a main discussion platform? Hmm I don’t know. A lot of them require invites and rely on you knowing they exist in the first place. If you’re new to a fandom or just want to lurk for a bit to get the lay of the land, that puts you at a disadvantage straight away.

I’m going to show my age here, but this is why I think I still lament the heyday of LiveJournal and forums/message boards (I know Reddit still exists but the forums I used were fandom-specific and entirely run by fans). LJ struck a good balance between public and private and between fandom and personal, as you could add friends to your LJ account and restrict blog access to friends only. Meanwhile, you could also join community groups for whatever fandoms you were into and post in those without having to share the inner workings of your mind lol.

Of course, you added friends you met on the community groups and that’s how you got to know people. And because it didn’t have to be a free-for-all, you actually got to learn a lot about the people you followed. They shared their names, photos, details about their lives, their families, school/college/jobs etc. as well as the fandom side of their personalities. Personally, I would never be that open on Tumblr because anyone could stumble across my page. There’s no happy medium anymore. It’s either share everything with the entire internet (or at least all registered Tumblr users) or hide away in a private chat group.

I had a similar experience to LJ with a band’s forum in the ‘00s as well. I haven’t spoken to a lot of those people in 10-15 years but I still remember their usernames and real names, what they looked like, which other forum members they were in relationships with, forum meetups, iconic forum dramas and fallings out we all had. Oh, and I married someone I met on there too lol. I know online romances still happen on Tumblr, but what I’m getting at I suppose is back in those days fandom felt like a proper community.

Obviously there were idiots and people you didn’t like, but because it was moderated and there were rules about abuse, it taught you how to keep things civil and to just ignore/scroll past stuff you didn’t want to see. If you disagreed with someone, you couldn’t send them anon hate or try and get their account suspended out of spite; it forced you to engage with someone else’s point of view and to debate. There was also a much wider range of ages than Tumblr, which, much to contrary belief on here sometimes, isn't actually a bad or dangerous thing lol. I learnt a lot from older forumites when I was an angsty teenager. It wasn’t perfect and there was the odd power hungry mod and people you were just never going to see eye-to-eye with, but that’s life, isn’t it? That’s how it works offline as well. And in hindsight, I’m so grateful I got to experience my formative years in that version of online fandom rather than the version we have now.

2. What kind of asks do you miss most? Questions about your current fandom? Questions about your personal life or preferences? Something random and batshit insane?

I guess I just miss more good faith/no ulterior motive bonding over shared love of characters/shows etc. whether that be in asks or not, and whether it’s with fellow creatives or people who’ve never created anything.  

That’s not to say I wouldn’t answer anything personal, random or batshit insane though…within reason of course 😂 But I don’t naturally really talk about myself a lot unless someone asks or it’s relevant to a conversation. I’m like that offline as well…I guess it’s just my introverted nature. So, fandom stuff always feels like easier ground to ramble about on Tumblr. And the more personal stuff usually follows suit once there is an established relationship of trust. That’s one thing that's been hard to find in the last few years, because too many people have screwed me over lol. I suspect that’s probably a barrier to making new connections across the board if anyone has ever had bad past experiences in fandom. It certainly makes you more cautious.

For comparison’s sake, back in 2015, I was involved in a small but very active and interactive fandom. Everyone sent asks to everyone about the characters, discussed the show vs the book, different ships, ‘what if?’ type questions. I remember receiving quite a few asks, even though I had only made a handful of gifs and graphics for the fandom and generally didn’t create much. I don’t remember there being a divide between creatives and non-creatives though. We were all just collectively losing our minds over the source material and it was absolutely joyous. There was a group fanbook made and even an in-person meetup. Again, it was a proper little community for a while.

Skip forward to 2020 and the fandom I got involved with had elements of community when we were all in lockdown and more people were hanging out online because they were stuck at home. But I think the difference by this point, at least in this specific fandom, was that it was very difficult to feel heard if you weren’t also creating.

I remember having a very specific thought at one point of ‘You either get stuck in and contribute the things you want to see that aren’t already there, or you move on’. It wasn’t in terms of thinking I had to ‘earn’ my place in the fandom, but more I thought I had something different to offer but just quietly saying it in tags or piggybacking on someone else’s posts weren’t enough anymore, especially when I wasn't necessarily getting much back at times.

And I think I managed to carve out my own little niche corner of the fandom in 2021. I got some lovely asks about my fics, I used to chat back and forth in reblogs with a few people and I’ve had some insane essay-length comments on my fics in the past that I never expected in a million years, so I do appreciate all of that, obviously.

I can’t pinpoint when things changed exactly, but I think it must have been as the fandom started getting bigger and the TikTok effect became more pronounced, that the gaps between creatives and non-creatives and between the popular creatives and the smaller creatives grew wider. Competitiveness between creators in general seemed to get worse and a lot of smaller and diverse creatives weren’t treated well as fandoms within fandoms developed around the most popular people. Then it just became a giant popularity contest rife with high school politics rather than it being about the characters and source material, or making friends.

I appreciate I’ve compared a small fandom and a rapidly expanding fandom here, and I'm sure there are still some corners of Tumblr left that are more like my 2015 experience, but my 2020 onwards experience isn’t an isolated incident from everything I’ve read on here and Reddit. Something has shifted even in the last couple of years, let alone beyond that.

I also think perhaps the immediacy and short lifespan of fandoms makes it harder to interact in general, because streaming services often drop an entire season in one day. You know your mutual will be watching it because they’ve been hyped about it on their blog, but you don’t know which episode they might be up to. So, you don’t want to be sending messages/asks potentially spoiling things they might not have got round to yet. Or they’ve watched it all in 24 hours and it takes you several weeks to get round to episode 1, by which point half your dash has already moved on to the next must-watch piece of media. That’s how small the window of opportunity is sometimes now; it’s insane.

3. How do you feel about anonymous ask? I hate being perceived, so here we are.

As long as people aren’t being rude/abusive, I don’t have a problem with anons. I know what you mean about being perceived, so I wouldn't want to remove the anon option for that reason. I've had some lovely fic related anons in the past too, so as long as it's all respectful, I'm cool with it.

But I know anon hate is a problem on here, and I think it partially ties into the whole high school politics thing again. A lot of people don’t know how to deal with their own insecurities and jealousies without taking it out on someone else. The stats obsession that has infiltrated fandom from social media seems to bring the worst out in people, especially re: comparison and not feeling good enough. It's no excuse, but I think that's probably where it comes from.

I’ve also noticed some creatives getting upset by entitled anons just coming into their inbox and saying ‘Part 2 of X fic please’ or being pushy about the next chapter if it’s been a while since the last one. So, I also think a lot of fandom etiquette has been lost in recent years, this being a prime example. People seem to forget they're talking to a human being and just see content, content, content.

And I don’t really know what the answer to any of this is tbh! I would like to think the writers’ and actors’ strikes might help paint a bigger picture of how social media and the way fandom has changed are all interlinked with the big studios’ practices. But who knows? I do see quite a few more posts pointing out these problems nowadays, so I guess that’s a step forward.
