mmmmmmmm sad
i was really excited about my CoS game yesterday but a few of the players seem to be very fixated on getting to the next combat/room they can steal stuff from? and getting annoyed when my character expresses caution? I got interrupted once or twice while looking through some of the lore-related stuff or while trying to find an alternative means of doing something besides "charging right in." Like, not just the character taking off to do their own thing - the player interrupted me to tell the DM that we were going down a hallway. Like. Okay.
we were told this was going to be a roleplay/exploration/mystery heavy game and I'm feeling like that's only fine if it fits in the span of six minutes. And so now it feels like I'm the one making the problem.

Week 4
When was a time when you were on a high performing team (if you have not been part of a high performing team select your best team experience):
The experience that I will talk about is the time I spent volunteering at an Animal Sanctuary in South Africa. The volunteers would be split up into multiple smaller groups for half the day and then come together to do one big group activity for the other half of the day. So, it gave me a lot of experience in bother larger and smaller teams.
1. What was happening that made it a high performing team?
A big part of what made my group such a high-performing team was our enthusiasm for the jobs we were doing. The reason we were all there in the first place was to help out at an animal sanctuary, so we all went in knowing what was expected of us and wanted to do our best, rather than a random school project you have no interest in. Another part of it was our growing friendship with each other. It's amazing how quickly you can get close to people when you live together, work together, and eat together with no wifi. Even when our tasks did not involve interacting with any of the animals (like cleaning up bones in an empty enclosure, going on a hike to check the grounds for potcher traps, or cleaning out the empty elephant house every morning) they were still enjoyable because we were all becoming great friends, so everything felt more like a game than work. Once, when we were disposing of bones by throwing them into a big pit, we noticed a piece of meat barely holding on to a long protruding rib bone further down the hole... so naturally, we made it into a game to see who could hit the meat off the bone by throwing bones at it. This sped up our progress tenfold and I'm proud to say it was I who managed to hit it off.
2. What was your contribution to the team development?
I contributed an extra dose of positivity, excitement, and encouragement to the team atmosphere. I also was generally the one who would help out members who were a bit more anxious about interacting with certain animals. Off duty, I was also the designated spider killer. The spiders in Africa are no joke and everyone else was too afraid to do anything about them. That's where I come in. Once a week the facility allowed the volunteers to have a party after work hours where bringing your own alcohol was allowed (once a week you could go with a group on a bus into the nearest town to buy things from a store, including alcohol). I was the only one among the volunteers who doesn't drink, so when the fun was over, I would help some people who partook a little too much get safely to their rooms. There was also a time during one of the parties when a crab had crawled out of a neighboring pond (these parties were always outside) onto the dancefloor and I needed to come to the rescue to bring the crab back home. So, I think I bring a level of security to whatever team I'm a part of
3. As you look back on this team now, what might you change about the team and about your role in the team? Why?
Looking back, I don't think I would change anything about my role or my team. In that environment, eating three delicious and nutritious meals a day with a daily schedule that had me exercising outside all day long, surrounded by such great people and the experience of a lifetime, I think I and my teammates were the healthiest we've ever been. Plus, as I mentioned before, everything was fun and did not feel like work. I would, however, still change a couple of tasks we were given. One day we were given the job of breaking apart a concrete floor to clear space for a new small enclosure to be built. None of us were strong enough to even make a dent with the tools we were given, and thus, no work got done. Even though that was a bit frustrating, we didn't let it create conflict among us, and instead, our volunteer leader realized the futility of the situation and let us hang out in the shade for half the day until lunch.
4. Think of how you currently respond to conflict in a team. In what ways does this help develop the team and develop yourself. If you feel another approach to handling conflict might be more effective what might that be?
I think learning how to handle conflict in a non-confrontational and non-destructive way is vital for everyone in any situation. I did not have any conflicts during my time in Africa, but in other instances, I approach the subject very casually. I like to always be calm because most of the time conflicts among group members are not that big of a deal. However, when the consequences are major I will approach whoever I have this conflict with directly and clearly. This came up most in group projects I've written about previously, where I've had to put my foot down and state the facts. Being direct and honest about your issues or conflicts in a team setting is important in order to keep everyone on the same page and tackle any problems that arise together. It's important to be firm, but also open to what others have to say as you might have misinterpreted the situation. Then apologize if you were in the wrong, or forgive and move on if you were acknowledged to be in the right. It might be uncomfortable for a bit, but the result of not doing anything will be much worse. There's an old piece of advice that is along the lines of "You shouldn't treat any conflict like it's 'me vs you', rather, you should treat it like it's 'us vs the problem' ". I believe that advice is meant for couples, but I think it is relevant in any situation involving more than one person.
5. If you could do one thing differently when working in future teams what might that be? Why?
I think I would like to approach my future teams the way I did my volunteer group. Most of my group projects have been the opposite of my volunteer experience. In fact, both my time in Africa and my time volunteering at a veterinary clinic were very memorable and positive experiences. I think the difference is in those scenarios, we all are excited to do our tasks and are proud that the work we do is going towards helping animals, which is a nice feeling. However, with most schoolwork, it's seen as something you HAVE to do rather than something you WANT to do. So, to answer the question, I think one thing I would do differently is try to approach future teams with a more positive attitude and try to find more meaning in the work that we are doing.

HANK VOIGHT
Dating the Big Boss.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Requested: yes
Prompts: none
Warning(s): mentions of r*pe and p*dophilia (it's a tough case)
Author's note: I had a lot of fun writing this one. Especially since everyone is a lot older so I could play with maturity a little. Hope you enjoyed and sorry for the long wait! I'm just starting to get back to writing.
~
"What's up with him?" Erin whispered when she saw Voight barge into the unit's personal quarters. Hank didn't look at any of them as he strode into his office with a frown on his face.
He was angry, that's for sure.
Still hot on his tail, your senior detective self arrived right on que with him. Every pair of eyes was on you, knowing that you were the only one who had magic to calm him. You waved your hands, dismissing their burning questions all at once. You just crossed your fingers for them all to see and walked into your lover's office without knocking.
"Hank let's talk about this," You approached him carefully.
"There's nothing to talk about here Y/N."
"Yes, there is." You sat at the edge of his desk casually, although your heart was still racing upon hearing the news delivered to you this morning. "We have a serial rapist and pedophile out there. It's okay to be affected by it honey."
"Well I don't have any leads on this case," He told you strictly, although the anxiety was visible on his shoulders. He had his back turned to you and face focused on the city in front of him. The wheels turning and working in his brain were practically visible for the whole world to see.
"Then maybe we should look into our contacts and see who can help us," You proposed quietly. "This is far from over Hank. We can still turn this around."
You could see him nod, which instantly calmed you down. "Come here."
He, as surprising as it may sound, listened to your words, and walked over to your arms.
He placed his rough hands on your thighs while you ran your hands over his arms soothingly. Eventually your cold hands grasped his face as you gave him a soft look, "Do you want me to brief the team?"
"Thank you," You giggled, still not used to those words leaving his mouth.
The two of you shared a kiss before you left him alone with his thoughts to brief the team. Upon joining them you felt tension rise again, it made you remember what you were meant to do at that moment. "Is he alright?" Erin asked you quietly. You only managed to nod your head before ushering her to her seat.
Then you took a stand in front of them, a file filled with gore pictures secure in your hand. "A few days ago we found a female that was beaten, raped and murdered just outside the Riverwalk area. She was found in a dumpster just outside the Belle Hotel. Roughly 9 years old and unfortunately not the only case."
You spoke with authority that matched Voight's to a certain level. As a senior to all of them it was your job to deliver the details loud and clear. "There have been a few more cases similar to this one. Brody Thompson declared as missing just over a week ago was found two days ago in an area like this one. His left pinky was cut of just like the first victim's..." You placed a picture of a little boy on the board.
"Same MO?" Erin asked, scribbling things vigorously into her notepad. You nodded sadly.
"Are all of the victims children?" Burgess asked from the other side of the room. When you bobbed your head to her in confirmation you could practically see the heartbreak that struck her.
"We believe that we're dealing with a serial rapist and pedophile." You sighed.
"The MO is unique, and it doesn't look like he's been very careful with where he dumps the bodies," Jay notes. "It should be easy to find him since he's bound to make a mistake."
"That's where it gets tricky," You tell him, appreciating his quickness in noticing the details. "These are only cases reported in Chicago within the last few weeks. If we expand the search, which we did, there are dozens of other reported cases all around Ohio, Virginia, Rhode Island and lastly… New York."
A cool cloak of silence fell over the room once you've finished marking the spots. "Some date back to 10 years so we're looking for someone in his early to mid-forties. Maybe even older. Virginia State Police was only able to give us cases within the last 5 years, and we've hit four matches so far."
"Why are they handing the case to us? NYPD should be able to handle this." It was Alvin who had asked that question to which you opened your mouth to answer immediately.
But Hank, your boyfriend and partner, was quicker.
"Because we're the most qualified to do it," He explained, voice booming across the room. He joined your side and placed his hand on your hip; it was that after all, only the members of this very unit knew about you two. "Now, I've pulled out some old contacts from New York. They should be arriving here on the first jet they get their hands on. Until then I want you guys everywhere."
When his gaze slid to yours a twinkle of determination shone within his irises, "Let's get this son of a bitch."
***
"Sargent Benson," you greet the woman that just descended the stairs of the jet. The only people on the tarmac are the two of you and the officers you brought here. "Thank you for coming on a such short notice."
"Voight sounded stressed when he called. Is he alright?" She asked you quietly, matching your footing and walking toward the black SUV next to you.
You shook your head, "This case has been really hard on us is all. It's not every day we have cases like this one."
"Well, our job isn't pretty." She agreed. "Rape cases are already hard on their own."
"But when it's kids…"
"Do you have kids, detective?"
"None that are my own."
"Then I guess you're lucky."
"I suppose so."
***
The drive back to the district wasn't all that comfortable. Benson carried an air of importance around her that would get some rookies sweating with nerves.
Decades in this line of work showed just how good of a match you were for her.
"Hey Trudy," You greeted your friend in passing. Benson was hot on your heels as you lead her upstairs.
Upon reaching your destination you felt her walk straight pass you into Hank's arms. She brushed her hand against the lapels of his jackets when she asked him how he was doing. You felt your chest rise with jealousy but that diminished quickly when you saw him lead her to his office.
"You're not seeing that?"
"Seeing what Jay?"
The younger man narrowed his eyes at you, "She's obviously into him."
You sent him a glare. "We're not kids Jay, we're adults that lived long enough to see what's worthy being petty about and what's not."
"If you say so."
You rolled your eyes, but still went to retrieve your man, nevertheless.
***
You knocked twice before Voight let you in. "Sorry detective, this is a private conversation."
It was Benson who had told you this. You fought an eyebrow that wanted to rise.
"Y/N runs this unit as much as I do," Your boyfriend interfered. "She can stay."
You smiled, that not being able to suppress. "What do you have?"
"A possible location," She told you, still eerie about you being there.
You perked your eyes at that, taking your usual seat in Voight's office. Hank came to stand behind your chair, hands on the back of it. Olivia eyed you quietly and came to retrieve some papers. With her back turned to you both you turned your head, eyes travelling to Voight. Silently, you asked about what was going on. He only shook his head and pressed his hand against your shoulder, rubbing it in comfort.
Olivia saw the interaction and raised her brow.
***
You held your M16 in your hands securely. Officers were bustling all around you, greeting you in passing. The house in front of you looked like a fortress having god knows what protecting it. "We don't go in by force. There are still kids inside."
While the members of your unit nodded in agreement, a few voiced their distaste.
"We go in now. Cut off his ability to retaliate."
"I understand Olivia, but-"
"Sergeant."
"Excuse me?"
"I'm your sergeant. Let's keep it that way."
You gritted your teeth, seemingly offended by the fact that she had used the chain of command to put you in your place.
"My sergeant is Voight. I answer only to him," You corrected her. "I just want those kids to come out of there alive, and that's not going to be possible if we barge in. He'll panic. Kill them instantly."
"Why don't you go in then?" She proposed. "Scope and give us inside information so we can work our way around it. You find the kids and let us do the rest."
You thought about it. "I need –"
"Nothing." Your sergeant appeared by your side, eyes hard and body as still as a rock. Unlike Benson, you could see his anger. You almost reached out to calm him. "You're not doing it."
"This could be our shot." You told him.
He only shook his head, "Trust me it's not. A word, sergeant?"
She nodded and followed him.
You watched as the distance became bigger.
Jay and Adam came to stand next to you, Adam at your right side and Jay at your left.
"Holy hell." Adam muttered.
"She almost got you killed." Jay commented after him.
"Holy hell indeed guys."
***
"Hank I'm trying to do right by these kids!"
"The hell you are," Hank outright yelled at her. As the only person at the scene that had guts to stand up to her, he took the chance to put her in her place. "The way I see it you want Y/N in direct danger with no back up."
She stayed silent.
"You don't get to boss around my unit. Especially not my most trusted detective."
"Oh, come on Hank." She sighed, not quite believing what she was hearing.
"You're here to assist. The case is still mine so don't get ahead of yourself."
And with that, he left her to be.
"We're waiting for him. SWAT is on standby."
You smiled gratefully at him before mouthing a thank you.
***
"You did great today," You complimented him, smiling from ear to ear. All the children that went missing within the last few weeks have been found alive. Wounded yes, but alive. And the man was, much to your satisfaction, shot dead when he tried to run. By none other than yourself. Being able to put down a monster like him brought you satisfaction.
It brought Hank pride too.
He pulled you in by the hip and rested your back against the wall. Chicago was lightly lit up outside, bringing peaceful atmosphere to the district. Your fingers brushed against his rigid jawline; eyes locked with his.
Kisses between you two were shared ever so often at work. While you would both usually leave to the privacy of your home, today was a day you both needed reassurances immediately.
Your lips were pressed together and moving in a way possible for only people with experience.
When someone opened the door without knocking, you pushed him away in fright. Hank didn't even stumble as he narrowed his eyes at the person who had intruded.
"Sergeant Benson?!" You shrieked, cheeks flushing a bright red.
"It all makes sense now." She mused.

I noticed Victor was missing from his usual elevator posting as I made my way back to Yes Man. Maybe without House sending him instructions he'd just defaulted back to the usual securitron routes. As for Ed-E and Veronica, I told them to go relax in the presidential suite while I handled the rest of my business with Yes Man. The rest of the securitrons also seemed to have defaulted without direct instruction from House, as I was able to make it to Yes Man with no interruption.
Yes Man was in his spot waiting in front of the Tops. I said as I approached him, "Yes Man! It's time." I held up the platinum chip and he gasped, "Mr. House is out of the picture and you have the platinum chip? Wonderful! Let's go!" He rolled toward the Lucky 38 with me close behind.
Tumblr media
Soon enough, we were back in House's penthouse. Yes Man bounced on his wheel excitedly, "This is big, huh? A very big moment! I'll just take the chip now. Wish me luck!" Yes Man inserted the chip into a slot on his chest, and his screen went blank for a moment before the chip was ejected from the slot. He then reinserted the chip into the console in front of the screen Mr. House used to show his face on, and the securitron body seemed to shut down.
There was a pause, for a moment I was worried it hadn't worked, but then Yes Man's smiling face flickered onto the giant screen, "Wow! Mr. House had quite the setup here! I can access his databanks and telemetry on every securitron on the network! Oooooh... Wait a minute! So that's what the platinum chip does! Interesting!" I raised an eyebrow, "So? What does it do?" Yes Man sounded giddy, "Mr. House had a whole demonstration planned for you! Take the elevator down to the lowest level and I'll show you what it does!"
Tumblr media
The basement was dark as I entered, but the lights quickly flicked on as I entered. Yes Man spoke from the intercom, "Step up on the platform, and we'll get this show started." The platform in question had a chair and a small table with a pair of binoculars. I took a seat and looked down at the pair of securitrons down below. Yes Man began his demonstration.
"Okay, so you're familiar with securitrons by now, obviously. I mean, some of your best friends are securitrons, right?" He laughed slightly before clearing his throat and continuing, "Our titanium alloy housing does a great job protecting our delicate electronic insides from small arms fire and shrapnel. Our left arm contains an X-25 gatling laser, quite deadly against soft targets at medium range." The securitrons on the demonstration floor opened fire with their lasers on a pair of wall targets, "That looks like fun! And for close-range suppression and crowd control, we have this handy-dandy 9mm submachine gun." The demonstration continued with the examples opening fire with SMG fire, "Nice! All of this is old hat, right?" I nodded. Impressive tech as securitrons were, I'd seen all of this on the gate guards alone. Yes Man replied, "Well, here's where it gets interesting! It turns out those are our secondary weapons! All this time, we've been running our Mark 1 operating system, which doesn't include drivers for our primary weapons! Imagine!" I leaned forward at that. I'd need a good view of what would be shown next.
Yes Man continued, "Now watch this, I'm downloading the Mark 2 OS to all securitrons on the network. Makes quite a difference!" The securitrons down below went idle for a moment, their screens going blank. When they turned back on, the old police officer faces they displayed were replaced with gruff soldier faces, "With the M-235 rocket launcher," My eyes went wide at that. The demonstration models opened fire, launching rockets at the back wall of the chamber, showering the room in debris, "We can engage ground and air targets at long range! And a rapid-fire G-28 grenade launching system makes us deadly in close-range engagements!" I braced myself against my chair as the robots fired grenades at the target wall, quickly reducing it to rubble, "Woo! Look at that! The OS upgrade also includes drivers for our auto-repair systems! Just try to hurt us now! All together, this software upgrade confers a 253% increase in combat effectiveness! Per unit! I hope you enjoyed the demonstration! You can come back up and see me or be on your way, I know you're a busy person!"
I stood up with my jaw still hanging open. House was right. With these securitrons for an army, who could even hope to topple Vegas? I turned and headed back up to the presidential suite. I'd had a long day, and I needed to think on what we should do next.

do you think the ages of the actors playing Emma and Knightley respectively have a significant impact on their performances? Like I’m not talking with respect to looks moreso the way they interpret and carry themselves in character. Bc although I haven’t seen all the versions (Kate, Gwyneth) I’ve seen clips of Romola’s after watching Anya’s and couldn’t help feeling that Romola’s gives a much more self-assured and mature version of the role while Anya’s had a streak of brattiness -(1/2)
Tumblr media
Firstly, thank you for the ask! I love to receive them, especially discussions like this.
And I think there are probably so many factors at play when it comes to interpretations of the character of Emma (and Knightley) that it is hard to boil it down to one thing such as an actor's age at the time. I would say it is a factor, but I wouldn't necessarily say it is a significant factor. Obviously, casting someone who doesn't look the part (age wise) will affect the audience's believability but an actor's job is to become what is needed. An adaptation of any work is a combination of factors: yes, the actor's vision is one thing, but there is also the script/screenplay, the authorial intent and director's vision that would all contribute to these things. So while Romola and Anya will no doubt have had their own visions of Emma Woodhouse, and some of that would also be down to their age, there would be too many other things happening to say that it would be a significant component - in my opinion.
Personally, if I were to compare 2009 and 2020 (which I am loathe to do because I'm aware it can get heated as to what adaptation is "better" - we all have our preferences and let us leave it there!), I would say that I found Romola's performance more immature. I certainly don't mean that in a derogatory way in the slightest, but (I felt) at least that she had more moments of being silly and childish - with Knightley especially. This may have been in order to make her character more relatable (I do find the 2009 Emma to be too "nice" in comparison to book!Emma - but that's just my personal opinion). I found Anya's Emma to be bratty for sure, but she was very controlled in her performance: her Emma had her own regimented idea of the world and she was very in control of it, and that when things start to go awry for her, she loses the clear assurance she had in herself at the start of the film. This is all symbolised by how perfect everything looked: the sets were like dollhouses, the costumes so precise - so that when we see Knightley losing it after the ball, or Emma getting a nosebleed, these are signs that the picture perfect world around them is no longer within their control. 2009 chose a different path for Emma's journey.
(I don't have time to analyse Kate and Gwyneth's performances here - but each Emma brings something different and I do appreciate that - she is such a layered character that there is always something new to find).
I think Emma Woodhouse is both a mature and immature character for her time period anyway, and that is why she is so complex. She runs her own house and looks after her father - a big role for someone her age, and by all accounts she does this exceptionally well. But she is emotionally immature in other ways: certainly in love and how she treats Harriet, as we know. So I think by saying Emma is either immature or mature is too binary - she is both, she contains multitudes, etc.
So long answer, but I guess in short, perhaps it is difficult for "older" actors to play younger, but if you are good at your job, it shouldn't come into it. I think other factors probably have a more significant impact at the end of the day.
I know I've mostly framed my answer in terms of the character of Emma, and I know you mentioned Knightley too. I guess most of the Knightley's we've had have been age appropriate at the time of casting so it is less of something to analyse. They've all "felt" the right level of maturity which is the most important thing. But again, I think they've all played the role differently but that is more down to the individual whims of the adaptation and script more than anything. Sure, they would all have had some input in their performance too, but there are certain "notes" that Knightley tends to always need to hit and because the book is not from his point of view (mostly), his internal journey tends to be secondary. (2020 really succeeded by virtue of letting him have his emotional journey on screen and that's part of why I adore it so much - he's always been my favourite literary character).
Either way, I'd recommend checking out all the adaptations one way or another - they all give something different and it is fun to see each "spin" on the novel. Even the modern adaptations (e.g.: Clueless, Aisha) give us something new too. I have my own preferences and critiques and thoughts on each, depending on what I personally favour in storytelling. Some are more true to the narrative of the novel, some capture the characterisation more accurately. The beauty of Emma as a book is that it has a lot of nuance and it is fun to see how it can be reinterpreted by different people for different eras and audiences.

#WomenInHorror - Relic - Oh, the Thoughts
I bet you thought @tlbodine would get to this first, huh? HAH!
So as part of our ongoing quest to inflict doctorate-level studies of horror film on ourselves for... the sake of doing it, Wuffie and I have been watching a lot of horror movies. Having finished our #HorrorThruTheDecades quest, we moved on to #WomenInHorror, focusing on horror films directed by women.
She's written quite a bit about the movies we've been watching. However, this last week, we watched a film that inspired me into a long-winded post-mortem after we finished it.
Tumblr media
Relic is a 2020 Australian horror film directed by Natalie Erika James, focusing on a three-generation family struggle between a grandmother, a mother and a daughter.
Edna, the grandmother, has been missing for several days when her daughter Kay and granddaughter Sam arrive to check on her. We get a little from Kay hinting that her relationship with her mother has been strained, and alternatively, defense of Edna by her granddaughter Sam who has a completely different relationship with her. (As tends to happen with grandparents and grandchildren.) Clues are laid out to hint that Edna may be succumbing to Alzheimer's and quite honestly, the movie does a very good job in showing how absolutely difficult it is to deal with that. Especially in the family situation involving the shift in power dynamic that happens when a parental figure suddenly needs a lot of careful, supportive care.
And Robyn Nevin as Edna? Fantastic. Sympathetic and terrifying all at once.
I won't spoil the film's ending here--you've got to go below the cut for that--but it's at once poignant and plays fair emotionally with the film's overall tone.
Now, for what I went off at great length at Wuffie about... [#triggerwarning for child abuse discussion]
Relic is pretty clearly intended to be a film about grief, aging, the inevitability of death and how part of dealing with health issues in older generations involves facing that you yourself one day may be in that exact situation.
What it also does really, really well--albeit unintentionally but strongly enough that it hit me across the face with a shoe--is create a solid metaphor for intergenerational child abuse.
Fairly early on in the film, the granddaughter Sam discovers a black mold staining a wall inside of a cluttered closet. This black mold becomes a consistent visual element that shows in nightmares, in the house and on Edna herself, staining her skin like a bruise. This mold, through the nightmares, is visually tied to a now-demolished smaller house that'd once stood on the family grounds and was the home of a "great-grandfather" mentioned once directly and alluded to in several nightmare sequences.
This mold grows on stained glass windows that were transplanted from the former house, spreads across the interior of the house itself and spreads across Edna's skin.
Several visual cues tie the black mold to the "great-grandfather" who, in one nightmare sequence, is shown sitting on the edge of a narrow bed before collapsing forward, out of sight. When the camera pans over, a human figure is etched in black mold on the floor.
At the end of the film, after Edna's transformation--you really ought to watch the movie to know what I mean--and the joining of three generations of women in silence together, Sam spies a black spot on her mother Kay's back, hinting at that same mold that destroyed Edna.
Incestuous child abuse is insidious and yet, from the memoirs I've read, always seems to be something the family "knows about" and simply doesn't discuss. A grandparent, a cousin, an aunt or uncle is abusing the family children--sometimes singling out one child, sometimes abusing every child--and the family is aware of this, but no actual steps are taken to bring the abuser to justice.
The cycle of abuse is fairly commonly known, but the long-term effects of child sexual abuse aren't always as easily identified by the public. Alcohol and drug abuse are extremely common amongst child sexual abuse survivors, as well as an inability to develop healthy, trusting relationships with other adults. Difficulties in parenting can also arise as the person who suffered abuse may fear the same thing happening to their child or be struggling emotionally and not able to show their child the affection they need.
Much like the insidious spread of black mold in out-of-sight places, causing illnesses that can't be immediately identified and threatening the structural integrity of a house, incestuous child abuse absolutely threatens and even destroys lives. It's hard to spot at a glance, hides in plain sight--in closets, cupboards, under stairs, behind furniture--and causes illnesses that can be attributed to more "acceptable" causes.
With the clear visual tie to the once-mentioned "great-grandfather" that isn't mentioned between the family members again, it's not hard to go a bit further and consider him the unmentioned, unnamed family abuser. His actions tainted the house he lived in, the remnants brought from it--Edna says later in the film how much she hates the stained glass windows, how cold and scared she feels when she passes them--and spread not only through the house but through the family itself.
And this mold--and the effects of intergenerational incestuous abuse--hits all three women in this family differently.
Edna, theoretically the member of the family who suffered direct abuse, is physically tainted by the black mold to the point it literally degenerates her body. Aspects of her behavior--disliking having "help" or needing to ask for it, offering a token to her granddaughter one day, demanding it back the next, trying to save photo albums from 'the house' by burying them--seemed strikingly like a woman whose coping mechanisms are now failing her.
She mentions believing someone is breaking into her house, stating it only began after the death of her husband. Alone in a massive house with visual, physical ties to the location of her abuse, feeling vulnerable and struggling to push away memories, Edna's actions feel like a cry for help that she can't verbalize because to do so would be to admit not only the vulnerability she feels now, but the fact that it's equivalent to how vulnerable she was as a child, being abused.
Fairly early on in Relic, Kay makes it clear that she and her mother are not particularly close. She makes attempts to stay in contact, but isn't invested in her mother's day to day life and has actually distanced herself to a degree. Her daughter Sam has a closer and more openly affectionate relationship with Edna. Kay mentions her mother threatening to lock her in the old house "when she was a brat" and seems to want a comfortable distance between herself and her mother.
A parent who has endured abuse as a child can have profound difficulty in bonding with their own children. Healthy sexual intercourse and adult relationships are tainted by child abuse experiences, and some memoires have mentioned being pregnant making them feel "dirty" as if they'd committed some great sin. Bonding with an infant while struggling with those emotions can lead to distant parenting and leave a child with an insecure emotional attachment.
Sam, the granddaughter, is the least damaged by the intergenerational abuse at the beginning of the film. She has an affectionate relationship with her grandmother, seems actively interested in doing what she can to help Edna and scolds her mother for not taking a more prominent role. When Sam finds a sketchbook with a sketch of the 'great-grandfather's' house, she doesn't know what it is or to whom it belonged. The cycle of abuse has been broken; Sam isn't even aware that abuse happened.
What she does is learn of it through a visual metaphor for unearthing family history. Discovering the black mold in the closet and pursuing a ghostly figure into what becomes a nightmarish labyrinth that has echoes of the home she'd always felt safe in plays very well as the realization for an unabused member of a family learning about the abuse that happened. What was loving and familiar is suddenly alien and terrifying, threatening and tainted.
By the end of the film--rather an emotionally poignant moment--all three women have been hurt by this black mold (i.e. incestuous abuse) and have come together in a moment of quiet rest. Edna, completely altered into a shell of who she once was, with Kay, accepting that what happened is fact and had effects on her as well, and Sam, who now understands a great deal about her mother and grandmother.
Every generation in the family has been affected to some degree, even if the cycle of abuse was fortunately broken. The black mold not only completely transformed Edna internally, expressed in a striking visual moment, but also tainted her daughter. Even the granddaughter, although physically unharmed by the mold, has been permanently changed by learning about what happened in her family and feeling her perceptions twist (frighteningly so) from what she once held to what she now knows.
While I don't think the film intended to be such a great visual metaphor for the horrific effects of incestuous family abuse and the intergenerational damage it causes, it did an incredibly good job of being one.

According to feng shui, tidy spaces attract feel good vibes! Not an unnecessary luxury, because autumn can also bring gloom with it.
Feng Shui clearing tips for more Chi (life energy) in your home. "As you are, so is your home. And as your home is, so are you," say the Chinese. That can be quite confronting when you stumble over piles of papers, lying clothes, bulging bookcases and dusty knick-knacks. What does that say about you? A home is not just a place with four walls and a roof, but the ultimate place to express your identity. The reverse is also true: it is also the most important factor that influences your well-being, your happiness and the lightness with which you live.
Chaotic chi
Your house and the things you have collected in it say a lot about who you are, where you are in your life, and how you treat yourself. Suppose there is a lot of disorder in your house, it creates chaotic chi – or life energy. That chaotic chi in turn creates disorder, chaos and confusion in yourself and in your life. The more stuff, the greater the chance that you experience your life as unnecessarily heavy.
That does not mean that Feng Shui pursues a minimalist lifestyle. On the contrary. Because we feel richer and more fulfilled when we are surrounded by things that are carefully made of beautiful materials. Objects that evoke a loving memory and are dear to us make us happy. They help define our identity. There is no healthy emotional frame of reference in a very minimalist interior. That can have a negative effect on your awareness of yourself. In addition, objects that stand in the way, are broken or worn out have a negative effect. They take away from you the space to live in freedom. Because every time you see them, they unconsciously trigger a negative emotion. It is therefore better to ban them from your home and from your life.
Cheerful and unhindered Chi in the fall
For a healthy energy in the house, Feng Shui advises to leave room to move. In this way, the Chi can cheerfully and unhindered provide your whole house, and with that your whole life, with new zest for life. This way you not only keep your house, but also your body and life in a healthy condition.
Below are my 8 tips to make space in your home and life:
1. Your home as a personal kingdom
Do you make conscious choices about how you handle your home? Who let you in  what items come into your house; where you put them. Or do you blindly follow trends, advice from others or the opinion of your partner? When you become aware of the control you have over your own domain, you are more powerful and independent in life. Honoring your home as your personal kingdom makes it easier for you to see yourself as the queen or king in control.
2. Dare to say goodbye
Because we find it difficult to say goodbye to a certain period in life; from the person we were or from the one we've shared life with, we make up excuses to delay decisions. This way you can tell yourself that you might still be able to use that old blanket for something. But the real reason you're not getting rid of this one is because it reminds you of your dead cat who used to sleep on it. Well-known excuses:
"I'm going to make it soon"
"I'm saving it for my kids"
"Maybe it will be worth a lot"
"It's going to be fashion again"
"Maybe I still need it"
In doing so, you burden your life with baggage that belongs to another person or to another time and does not make a valuable qualitative contribution to your life.
3. Choose quality
Rather buy a single item that is carefully made of beautiful materials. And which you also know where it comes from, instead of a cheap mass product of poor quality. Such products devalue the energy in your home and therefore yourself.
4. Discover a deep wish
As long as you don't know what you're doing it for, cleaning up remains something that "should" and not something you are motivated for from within. If your study is clutter-free, there would finally be room for your long-cherished desire to paint. Examine yourself what you dream of. The more concrete and clearer your wish, the greater your motivation to make room for that wish and to improve the quality of the furnishing of your office, for example.
5.Honor that makes you happy
When it comes down to it, the things that really make you happy can be counted on one hand. More stuff doesn't make for more happiness: you find that much more in the little things. The softness of a wool sweater. The shine of a wooden table. The way the sun's rays draw a pattern on your wall. That one picture of your baby. If you honor what makes you happy, you lose much less attention to things that don't deserve it. Give that one photo a place of honor and don't hide it between a multitude of images.
6 Create regularity and rituals
Neglect makes dull and indifferent. It also draws life force from a space or object. Therefore, choose fixed times to tidy up and clean. Welcome the light into your home when you open the curtains. And thank your house when you close it again. Regularly incorporating moments for care and attention for your home quickly raise the frequency of the energy to a higher arrow. Even a small ritual like a greeting from your home every time you come back in quickly improves the relationship with your home. Your house changes from utensil to a sacred place.
7. Cleanse the room and reward yourself
When you're done cleaning up and organizing a space, it's always good to refresh the energy in that space. Open windows and doors against each other   and let it blow through well, and wipe everything off with soapy water. Cleaning at a deeper level is done with the help of good quality incense or sounds of healing music. The crowning glory can be a beautiful, fresh bunch of flowers. Don't forget to reward yourself after a clean-up hour with a nice cup of tea, a walk in the woods or something else that makes you happy. Set a time limit ranging from 15 minutes to an hour, then stop cleaning up and celebrate the victory over yourself. Take a deep breath and admire the result achieved – even if it's only one drawer. This gives energy and courage to tackle the next job.
8. Make life force visible
Often a house is full of things that are not alive or that have not been brought to life. Beautiful, green plants or pets remind us with their presence that we are living beings and like to be surrounded by life and vitality. That not only makes a positive contribution to the quality of energy, but keeps your consciousness much more in the here and now. More grounded.

House Isekai: A Realm Reborn - Part 2, Through the Maelstrom (3 of 3)
House Isekai ARR Masterlist Here
Tumblr media
Client: Hilda Valentin Goneril
Refusing to work with the newly reformed House Isekai due to Class VII, Duvalie takes her orders and storms off to Goneril territory, trying to get home faster. Not wanting to leave Duvalie completely alone, Raelyn and Fireteam Alpha-Nine accompany her.
Reports indicate of a giant serpent-like beast terrorizing the ocean trade routes near Goneril territory, and an unknown entity accompanying it…
--
[Respite and Sunlight - Fire Emblem: Three Houses OST]
The carriage carried a group of knights as it made its way towards the fishing town.
As the horses leisurely drew the carriage forth, the dirt kicking up on the path, the driver turned his head and shouted out.
(Driver) "We're almost there, milady."
Hilda sighed as she stretched, putting her head back onto the carriage.
(Hilda) "Finally. That took forever."
She looked around and noticed the two knights accompanying her were calmly sitting still, not saying a word.
(Hilda) "Am I seriously the only one who noticed?!"
(Knight 1) "No milady, we feel the same. Now isn't the time to be lax, however."
(Hilda) "Percy, I remember you being the one telling me that this town wasn't anything to be concerned about!"
(Knight 2) "It was, until that letter came in. We only put the request out three days ago, how could mercenaries possibly have responded that fast? And I do not like the descriptions of them either..."
(Percy) "I agree with Jonas. Tech that looks too advanced for random mercenaries to have? This seems like it's a trap..."
(Hilda) "I sincerely doubt the Separatists would cause any trouble for the Alliance. And what strategic importance would a fishing town like this have?"
(Jonas) "I think that's all the more reason to be wary, milady. Besides, orders from Lord Holst were specifically to-"
(Hilda) "Yeah yeah, I know, make sure I'm safe and everything. It's when we get out to the ocean, you guys can start doing your jobs properly."
Jonas looked at Percy, in which his response was just a shrug.
(Percy) "Hmph. I wonder what those mercenaries are like..."
...
Duvalie woke up and quickly looked around before her shoulders relaxed. They were still inside the building the Class VII members led them to.
Duvalie noticed the ODST's were already awake.
Dutch was near the window, looking at the small blue device curiously.
(Dutch) "Hell is this thing?"
It was making a small static noise, Dutch poked at it until Mickey came close and examined it himself.
(Mickey) "Looks like a jamming device of some kind."
(Buck) "Yeah, it's messing with my helmet's visor a little. You think a fishing town like this would have something that'd warrant a jammer?"
(Romeo) "Oh, you're finally awake."
The ODST's turned to Duvalie who picked up her sword and shield.
(Duvalie) "No one bothered to wake me up?"
(Mickey) "Hey, Fie's orders. Not ours."
Duvalie rolled her eyes and noticed Raelyn and Class VII were gone.
(Buck) "They said they were going out to patrol the area, wanted us to stay in here in case someone tried snooping around."
(Duvalie) "Guess that's fair enough."
Duvalie stood next to Buck, both of them not saying a word while Romeo cleaned his sniper and Mickey and Dutch were still examining the supposed jammer.
(Buck) "So...what exactly is your problem with those kids? If you don't mind me asking."
(Duvalie) "Ugh, we were enemies during a war, then we fought alongside each other and thats IT. Don't wanna talk about it. And we're NOT friends."
(Buck) "Alright, I believe ya. Dunno why you have to say it so forcefully."
(Duvalie) "Because it doesn't go through THEIR thick skulls! I DON'T LIKE REAN EITHER!"
(Buck) "Listen, Duvalie. I am right next to you. Stop frickin' screaming."
(Dutch) "Plus, you're making it harder to figure out what this is."
Duvalie and Buck turned to Mickey and Dutch who were still staring.
(Duvalie) "What in the hell is so fascinating about it that you two are still looking at it?!"
(Mickey) "Because, I don't think it's just a jammer. It's something else..."
That caught everyone's attention.
(Romeo) "...What makes you say that?"
(Dutch) "It's making some static noise, and it's sticky too. What kind of jammer is this small?"
(Duvalie) "Huh. I don't think we had anything like that in our world, so where did those brats...?"
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!
(Raelyn's voice) "We have returned."
The door opened with the members of Class VII and Raelyn.
(Fie) "Coast looks clear, and looks like we already got someone to help out with the Serpent problem."
(Buck) "Damn, that was fast."
(Raelyn) "I recommend we hurry, lest we make the townsfolk angry again."
Everyone grabbed their equipment and left the house, Class VII leading the way.
(Mickey) "Hey, so those blue things you put in the house, what exactly are those?"
(Laura) "It's best we not say just yet."
(Dutch) "That's...reassuring."
(Elliot) "Anyways, we visited the tavern from yesterday and he said someone wants to see us there."
(Fie) "And you can leave your weapons down, it won't be a fight."
(Duvalie) "What makes you say that?"
As they were walking to the tavern, Hilda and her two knights exited and saw them.
[Musica Universalis - Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers OST]
(Hilda) "Oh my gosh!"
(Elliot) "Ha, aren't you a sight for sore eyes?"
(Laura) "It's been quite a bit hasn't it, Hilda?"
(Fie) "Yo."
Hilda smiled as she ran up and grabbed all three of them into a hug.
(Hilda) "It's so good to see you guys again!"
(Percy) "Hey...you were with the professor when you came to Derdriu all those years back!"
(Jonas) "Don't think we've seen their friends though."
Hilda noticed the new group behind Class VII and raised an eyebrow.
(Hilda) "These your friends?"
(Raelyn) "Raelyn Amuto, at your service."
(Duvalie) "...Duvalie."
(Buck) "Call me Buck. Squad behind me is Mickey, Dutch, and Romeo."
(Elliot) "Hopefully, we just got here super recently ourselves. Though, Rean and the others can watch over them."
(Hilda) "Wait, everyone else is here?"
(Raelyn) "Not exactly."
Raelyn quickly caught Hilda and her knights up to speed.
(Hilda) "I see...So it's happening again?"
(Laura) "That's what we're here to investigate. Originally we came here to see what was blocking communications from Sitri to us, and find out what teleported this group here."
(Elliot) "After a day of investigating, we think it may actually have to do with the serpent problem you're having."
(Buck) "Huh, isn't that convenient."
(Duvalie) "When exactly did this problem pop up anyway? We only got here three days ago."
(Hilda) "Hm...I think it was about a week ago. Same time Claude let us know something was coming from the Tower, actually."
(Romeo) "...Too convenient."
[Briefing Time - Trails of Cold Steel 3 OST]
(Raelyn) "It seems to line up with our arrival. Has there been anything in the past House Isekai and your Houses have fought that can cause this amount of trouble?"
(Hilda) "Too much to count..."
(Laura) "It wouldn't be the first time for us."
(Fie) "I think we can kill two birds with one stone here then. We can investigate that Serpent and determine if it has anything to do with our problems."
(Hilda) "Sounds good to me."
(Dutch) "So...how exactly are we going to fight a giant water monster? Our gear isn't equipped for aquatic fights."
(Percy) "We have that taken care of. We're going to use a boat and investigate it the old fashioned way."
(Duvalie) "...That is the worst idea I've ever heard."
(Buck) "Inclined to agree with the lady. That seems a good way for our asses to get eaten out there."
(Elliot) "I'm kinda drawing a blank on what else to do. It's not like they have any high tech boats."
(Jonas) "Unfortunately, he's right. All of our efforts on expanding our sea travel has been fruitless, or its too early to tell. It only has been two years before we began these projects."
(Raelyn) "Us Space Marines are engineered to breathe underwater."
(Romeo) "Damn, is there anything you guys can't do?"
(Raelyn) "Have good luck."
(Duvalie) "Was that a joke?"
Raelyn's head slowly turned to Duvalie.
(Raelyn) "It is the last thing I would joke about. You all being near me already carries a risk of a violent death, including myself."
(Dutch) "What, your gun malfunction on you in battle a lot or something?"
(Raelyn) "It is a curse our Chapter seems to suffer. For one reason or another, something unfortunate happens, and I guarantee you it will happen when we attempt to hunt this beast."
(Hilda) "Jeez, quit that downer talk, we'll be fine! We've survived plenty worse than just some monster. Heck, it's not even our first monster we've fought!"
(Laura) "If that is the case, where is this boat?"
(Percy) "This way."
Percy and Jonas led the way to the docks, everyone following them.
Fie looked behind them and saw a small boy and girl staring at them. Specifically Raelyn.
She noticed an older girl walk up to them, she couldn't be older than 15. Fie put a mental pin on them and quickly followed along.
The older girl knelt down to get on their eye level.
(Older girl) "Hey, why are you staring at them so intensely, they didn't say something to you, did they?"
(Young girl) "Nuh uh, Mila! The big yellow man was super nice!"
(Young boy) "Yeah, he helped her out and everything!"
Mila had short brown hair and a small stature, carrying two daggers on her back.
(Mila) "Did he now...?"
...
The group took an Alliance controlled ship out into the coast, being helmed by the local garrison.
They set out to the last known location to where this Serpent had been reported, which fortunately was only an hour away from the town.
The day was bright and the winds were strong, and not a cloud in sight.
They skipped across the waters with relatively little trouble.
Hilda stood next to Class VII while everyone else was scattered.
(Elliot) "Man, I can't remember the last time we've been out by the sea."
(Laura) "A shame it wasn't for a more pleasant reason."
(Fie) "Oh, hey Buck."
Buck walked up to Hilda, followed by Raelyn and Duvalie.
(Buck) "Mind if we ask you something, miss Hilda?"
(Hilda) "What's up?"
(Buck) "Who exactly are these Separatists your townsfolk are so quick to anger about? An insurrection?"
(Laura) "I remember hearing about it while we were investigating the area as well."
Hilda frowned and looked back out to the sea.
(Hilda) "After House Isekai left Fodlan, our three nations decided to form a temporary pact in order to fix the damages done by Those Who Slither and the Church. It...hasn't been easy.
For the first two years, the Empire and Kingdom were at war, until it suddenly stopped with the Church to be the ones on the offensive.
The Battle of Gronder had all our blood shed, and its nothing that everyone can easily forgive with how recent it was.
So when news that we'd all be fighting as one, it made our citizens outraged. The only people who knew the truth about Zanado and Byleth was our militaries..."
(Elliot) "So, these Separatists...-"
(Hilda) "They've been wanting us to split up and leave each other be, just like it's always been. The Alliance has a mixture of Imperial and Kingdom Separatists, and Claude has been doing his best to keep the neutrality. It hasn't been easy, in addition to the Zanado Tower acting up again."
(Raelyn) "Which is why you sent this letter of the Serpent to Garreg Mach, correct?"
Hilda nodded.
(Hilda) "And if it requires House Isekai's help again, I fear the worst..."
(Laura) "Rest assured, we will do everything in our power to help Fodlan."
(Buck) "Not sure how long we'll be staying but, might as well. It's either that or be stuck here."
(Duvalie) "Wait a second, if you guys were stuck here before and got out, then how did you get in?"
(Fie) "Teleportation with the help of the Doom Slayer."
(Hilda) "Wait, he was the one that set you guys up with that?!"
(Raelyn) "I am not sure who he is, but perhaps he can teleport us out of here."
(Buck) "With how troublesome everything sounds, I sort of doubt it'd be that easy to get out of here."
(Fie) "Only one way to try."
Fie reached out a small crest of House Isekai's logo and pressed the center.
...Nothing happened.
(Fie) "Uh oh."
(Duvalie) "W-What does that mean?"
(Elliot) "Huh? That's how we were able to teleport from our world to the base! Why isn't it working?"
(Hilda) "Does that mean you're stuck here too?"
(Buck) "Well, that's fantastic..."
Dutch, Mickey, and Romeo were listening into the conversation.
(Dutch) "They got Insurrectionists to deal with too?"
(Romeo) "Great, that means we'll be here even longer."
(Mickey) "Their teleportation isn't working, so what is the cause of-"
(Percy) "Hey, we need everyone up here!"
[Dark Clouds Gather - Fire Emblem: Three Houses OST]
The groups looked up and went to the top deck where the wheel was. Percy and Jonas stood near the captain.
(Hilda) "What's the problem?"
(Jonas) "The skies in front of us are suddenly starting to darken."
(Captain) "The weather the way it was, this was too fast for it to suddenly darken! Something's about to happen!"
(Buck) "...Motion tracker's picking up something!"
The ODST's turned on their visors, blocking out their faces while Raelyn silently looked at his tactical display.
(Raelyn) "I am detecting something as well."
(Romeo) "Hey, remember that conversation about your luck from earlier? Suddenly beginning to believe it..."
Everyone drew their weapons as the crew of the ship shouted, readying cannons and bows.
Hilda drew out her relic axe and looked in the water.
(Hilda) "Where exactly are you sensing this thing?"
The ODST's had their weapons drawn, slowly looking to their left. The movement was quickly circling around them.
(Elliot) "U-Um, how big is this Serpent, exactly?"
(Percy) "Not sure, reports are inconsistent."
(Raelyn) "If it is as big as we expect it to be, what's stopping it from tearing this boat in half?"
Raelyn readied his Bolter and quickly turned around to the back of the ship, finally seeing a shadow.
(Buck) "ON OUR SIX!"
Only the ODST's and Raelyn turned to the back at first.
It took everyone else a second to realize what Buck meant, turning around and facing the same direction.
[Wreck to the Seaman - Final Fantasy XIV OST]
The shadow quickly vanished underneath the ship, making everyone nervous of what its about to do.
The ODST's and Raelyn paid attention to their motion tracker, and realized it was suddenly in place.
(Romeo) "Why the hell's it stopping?"
(Raelyn) ...!!! "It's not! CAPTAIN, TURN YOUR SHIP TO THE RIGHT, NOW!"
The captain quickly got on the wheel and steered right, the wind forcing the ship to make a hard right.
From the waters emerged a massive serpent, the water splashing onto the ship and blowing back some of the crew members.
The waves rocked the ship violently, almost tipping it over.
(Elliot) "AGH!"
Elliot lost his footing and was about to go overboard before Dutch grabbed his arm.
(Dutch) "Hang on kid!"
The ship barely managed to balance itself, throwing itself back with a force that made everyone lose footing again.
Duvalie was the first to stabilize herself when she realized the serpent was staring at them.
Tumblr media
As the serpent opened its mouth, it was about to strike before Duvalie leapt forward and hit its face with her shield, making it stagger back and roar in anger.
Duvalie used the force of her attack to launch herself back onto the ship, twirling her sword.
(Duvalie) "Little help?!"
(Percy) "FIRE THE CANNONS!"
Crew mates rushed to the cannons and lit the matches.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The cannons opened fire, most of them missing their mark while only one managed to hit the torso of the beast.
Raelyn and the ODSTs rushed to the side and held the triggers of their guns, the bullets rushing towards the head.
The serpent dove underwater to dodge the gunfire.
(Crew) "IT'S COMING AROUND THE OTHER SIDE!"
Its head emerged from the water on the opposite side of the ship, its head about to strike into the heart of the ship before Laura ran to the middle and swung her sword upwards, the blow knocking it away.
Fie used her gunblades to fire at its head as well, but the bullets deflected off the scales and it dove back underwater, this time no one being able to see where it went.
(Buck) "Dutch, Mickey! Heavy weapons, NOW! Romeo, crow's nest and snipe that son of a bitch!"
The ODST's nodded and quickly did as they were told, Raelyn going to Duvalie with his Bolter still raised.
(Duvalie) "Hey, Amuto, got any ideas?"
(Raelyn) "One, but with my luck-"
(Duvalie) "Grr, SHUT UP ABOUT YOUR BAD LUCK! It's either that, or we let the ship get torn in half!"
(Raelyn) "If that is the case, please hold onto this."
(Duvalie) "...Wha-"
Raelyn put his bolter into Duvalie's arm, almost making her tip over from the weight.
(Duvalie) "HUARGH!? H-HEY...W-WHAT TH HELL?!"
(Raelyn) "I will be right back."
Raelyn pulled out a knife and looked over to the side.
(Hilda) "H-Hey, what's the yellow guy doing?!"
(Elliot) "Huh?"
Elliot, Fie and Laura turned around and saw Raelyn peeking over the edge.
(Fie) "What is he...?"
(Laura) ?! "WAIT, ARE YOU GOING TO?!-"
(Raelyn) "BROTHERS, SISTERS! PREPARE FOR ITS RESURFACING!"
[Through the Maelstrom - Final Fantasy XIV OST]
Raelyn hopped over the ship's edge and dove straight into the water.
He quickly looked around, and noticing a shadow emerging from the depths as it was rushing upwards at him.
He did everything in his power to swim away from the ship and-
(Buck) "The hell is he-"
Everyone saw Raelyn shoot upwards as the Serpent's mouth grabbed him, the Space Marine now in its teeth.
Although it tried to devour him, the armor's weight and size made it extremely difficult to do so.
(Elliot) "OH AIDIOS!"
(Percy) "Is he insane?!"
(Romeo) "QUIT STARING AND FIRE DAMN IT!"
Romeo cocked his sniper's handle back and pulled the trigger, the shot ringing out across the air as the bullet attempted to hit the wildly flailing serpent.
Raelyn was being thrashed around, the teeth unable to go through his armor. He swung his knife into the beast several times to no effect despite it piercing the scales.
(Raelyn) "INCOMING!"
Having no option, he grabbed the beast's upper jaw and slammed his fist onto it, the force of the blow knocking the beast's head onto the ship.
The ship almost submerged itself into the water from the sheer weight of the serpent's head.
Everyone managed to keep their footing, letting Duvalie, Hilda, and Laura strike fast.
Duvalie dropped the Bolter and let it slide onto the floor as she stuck her sword into the teeth, breaking a few off and letting Raelyn awkwardly roll out of it's grasp.
Hilda smashed it's skull with her axe overhead, Laura swinging her sword sideways to strike at its mouth.
It recoiled back in pain, tipping the ship over again.
Raelyn was about to get on his feet before the cannons from the right side slid over and hit him back into the water.
(Hilda) "Wow, he wasn't kidding!"
The Bolter slid over into the water and landed near Raelyn, which he quickly grabbed and looked for the serpent again.
It was coming through the other side, but it was only now he realized how huge it was.
The tail was coming near him, and he rushed over to grab it as the tail violently dragged him along the water.
Dutch grabbed a Spartan Laser while Mickey had a rocket launcher, both of them checking their motion trackers.
(Buck) "Right side!"
Romeo reloaded his sniper and quickly spun around, being the first one to see the serpent emerge and fly towards the boat.
(Romeo) "It's gonna ram us!"
(Dutch) "Like hell it is!"
Dutch's Spartan Laser began to form a red line as it whirred up making a high pitched activation noise.
Mickey fired first, the rockets flying off and trying to lock onto the serpent. They went into the water as it nimbly swerved to the left and right, the waters catching the explosion.
Raelyn held on as the water's currents fought against him, using one hand at a time to climb up the serpent until he got near the eyes.
The pupil looked directly at Raelyn and widened, realizing he was there.
Raelyn's hand with the knife stabbed directly into the eye, making the serpent thrust upwards into the air, roaring and shaking into the air.
(Dutch) "GOTCHA!"
With another second passing, the Spartan Laser shot out a force even stronger than the cannon, a burning red beam of death searing through the Serpent's skin, making it drop into the water dead.
(Buck) "Good work, gentlemen."
(Elliot) "Whew, is everyone okay?"
(Percy) "Check on the equipment and for any wounded!"
(Jonas) "Captain, get us closer to the body we need to-"
Jonas stopped midsentence when he looked up.
Percy noticed it and turned around, seeing what he was staring at.
[Blinding Indigo - Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers OST]
Tumblr media
"An assassin from our homeland? Or a foolish trespasser upon these waters?"
(Jonas) "What in the hell?!"
(Percy) "SOMETHING'S UP HERE!"
(Buck) "OPEN FIRE!"
Fie and Buck pointed their guns and pulled the triggers, the bullets passing through the aquatic creature's body, letting them drop onto the floor, water splashing from the impact.
"Very well. Then Her power shall crush the miscreant that dares pollute these waters."
The creature began glowing, making the clouds above them start pouring rain and the water glow as well.
The Serpent Raelyn was still attached to started glowing a pale blue, the wound quickly regenerating. He was quick to aim his bolter and open fire on it, but had no effect.
Hilda and Laura ran up to it with their weapons swinging overhead, it quickly teleporting away as it vacantly stared at them.
Elliot was about to cast a spell with his staff until he realized the rain was forming puddles on the ship, slowly bubbling.
(Elliot) "Uh, guys?!"
Birds made of water emerged from the puddles and flew at Elliot, the force of the impact making him fall onto the floor.
Romeo immediately turned his attention to the bird and pulled the trigger.
The bird exploded into water, it calmly splashing down onto the ship.
Hearing something behind him, he reached for his pistol and spun around, pulling the trigger.
The bird exploded, and it was then he realized a puddle was beneath him.
From the puddle emerged a wolf-like creature that leapt up, knocking Romeo off the tower.
Before he could land, Duvalie caught him and set him down to the floor and raising her shield as the wolf leapt on top of her.
Its teeth was made of water as well, but Duvalie didn't want to find out if it hurt just as bad as a real wolf, so she plunged her sword into its body making it explode.
Mickey switched to an SMG and opened fire on the other puddles before anything else could show up, Buck and Fie joining in while Hilda, Laura, Jonas, and Percy fought other wolves.
Dutch was about to switch weapons before hearing the water explode behind him.
The Serpent was glowing the same blue as the winged creature, Raelyn still on top of it, stabbing it with his knife.
(Dutch) "Oh for the love of-"
He aimed his Spartan Laser at the Serpent again, only for the shot to be taken and hitting birds that flew in the way.
Elliot rushed over and healed Romeo of any injuries, making him push away the staff.
(Romeo) "Stop healing me and get to killing these things!"
Romeo reloaded his pistol while Duvalie dispatched of another wolf that was trying to attack from behind.
(Duvalie) "They just keep coming!"
Meanwhile, Raelyn lost count of how many times he stabbed the head of this beast, it would not stop moving.
It tried ferociously to be rid of Raelyn, eventually dunking its head back underwater and using the tail to swipe him off.
Raelyn flipped several times underwater, trying to steady himself as the Serpent bit Raelyn again, this time half his body inside it's mouth.
He said nothing as he remained calm, putting his bolter into the mouth before he was thrown out of the water and into the air.
Raelyn broke through the top deck and landed onto the bottom, creating a massive hole on the top part of the ship.
The Serpent's tail slammed onto the side of the ship as it wrapped its head around to the front deck of the ship.
Dutch aimed the laser at the head, until realizing it was too close to the ship.
(Dutch) "Damn it, I'd just rip this ship apart if I took the shot!"
Fie hopped onto the Serpent's back with both her gunblades anchoring her onto it, making it twitch only a little.
She pulled the triggers several times as the bullets went into its body.
It loosened up its grip on the ship, Laura using her sword to chop off part of the tail, making it roll over and tripping some of the crew and water-formed creatures.
Buck picked off one target after the other, struggling to reload.
A wolf jumped onto him, the teeth scraping against his helmet's visor as he grabbed his knife and plunged it straight into its neck, making it disappear.
As he got up, he noticed that the winged creature only staring at them.
(Buck) "The hell is this thing?!"
Elliot tried to heal any injured crew member he could while Hilda, Percy, and Jonas covered him.
Slamming his spear into a wolf, Jonas turned to HIlda.
(Jonas) "What do we do?! There are too many of them!"
The ship slowly began to crack loudly as the serpent's grip refused to let go.
(Captain) "At this rate, the ship is going break!"
(Percy) "Wait, wheres your yellow friend?!"
(Duvalie) "Think we saw him make a hole into the lower decks!"
(Dutch) "Then what is he-"
Cannons fired onto the serpent's side that was directly next to the ports, before an entire cannon was thrown out, a rope attached to it making the serpent drop from the weight.
It finally loosened its grip and struggled to get the attached cannons off of it.
(Raelyn) "The rope will not hold, TAKE THE SHOT BROTHER DUTCH!"
(Dutch) "GOTCHA!"
Dutch grabbed his Spartan Laser and charged it, aiming at the head.
Multiple puddles formed around Dutch before the others rushed to it and stuck their weapons inside.
As several birds were about to fly into the shot again, Raelyn emerged from the lower decks and opened fire with the bolter, the shots thundering out and completely shattering them into droplets.
Dutch's Spartan Laser kicked back as the beam hit his target, its head being completely blown off, making the serpent's body go limp and dissolve into the water.
The winged creature suddenly stopped glowing, making the ODST's spin around and open fire, the bullets going into the creature.
Hilda, Fie, Laura, and Duvalie swung their weapons at it, the streaks of their weapons severing it.
Elliot's staff formed into a violin-like shape as he casted a spell that formed a circle of light, blasting upwards and making the creature finally dissipate into the air.
[End Song]
The weather finally began to clear above them, everyone now trying to catch their breath.
(Dutch) "Lord, can you please get us out of this ocean now?"
The ship began to making an uncomfortably loud screeching noise before crewmates were on it, trying to fix the damages.
(Dutch) "...So was that a yes or no?"
An explosion occured where the serpent's body was, a mixture of the rain and saltwater pouring down onto them. A tiny rainbow formed from the storm in sight of the direction back to the town.
(Dutch) "...Amen."
(Fie) "Ugh, finally."
(Elliot) "That wasn't like anything we fought before..."
(Hilda) "Whew...to be fair, don't think we ever had to fight in the ocean."
(Duvalie) "So, do any of us have an idea of-AAAAAGH!"
Duvalie suddenly fell to one knee, grabbing her head.
(Buck) "H-Hey, what's-URGH!"
Buck quickly followed suit, then the ODST's fell to one knee as well, mimicking her action.
The members of Class VII and Raelyn were soon to follow, their heads pounding as their vision suddenly faded to white.
...
...
It was an empty lake with a strange platform in the middle, the sun was bright and the skies only had a few clouds.
And going towards that platform was a blonde-braided man and a small floating companion.
(Paimon) "Hm...Is it a good idea to mess with this?"
(Aether) "It's where the villagers told us that this...thing was, so it's not going to get rid of itself.
(Paimon) "Yeah, but still-"
Before they could continue their conversation, they heard something appear behind them.
It was a small floating creature with a staff, laughing maniacally.
(Aether) "Damn it, why now?"
Aether's sword materialized into his hand and was about to swing before a bright light appeared in front of them, catching the both of them off guard.
(Abyss Mage) "Eh?"
(Aether) "What the?-"
The bright light made the both of them step back, Aether accidentally triggering the platform, and the weather suddenly clouded up.
(Paimon) "Uh oh!"
(Aether) "Damn, now we have to deal with this-"
Before he could finish, the bright light exploded and made the air push them back, before slowly pulling them in.
The Abyss Mage and whatever was summoned with the platform was sucked into the light.
Aether and Paimon came dangerously close to before he shot a powerful gust of wind out of his hand, making him fly further back as the light quickly disappeared.
The weather returned to normal as he got up trying to catch his breath.
(Paimon) "What the heck was that?!"
(Aether) "I...I have no idea..."
Everything started to turn into a static mess as Aether and Paimon slowly faded out of view...
...
(Hilda's voice) "Hey...HEY!"
Everyone's vision returned to them as they looked around confused.
(Percy) "What was that about?"
(Buck) "Alright...we all saw that too right?"
(Duvalie) "Agh...you mean that lake platform thing...?"
(Laura) "I...saw it too!"
(Raelyn) "As did I...None of us possess any psychic abilities I am unaware of, correct?"
(Mickey) "If I had the ability do that crap, I would've in that fight!"
(Hilda) "What are you guys talking about?!"
Everyone turned to Hilda and her knights. It seemed they were unaffected.
(Fie) "You...didn't see that?"
(Hilda) "No, you guys just all reached for your head at the same time!"
They all looked at each other now.
(Elliot) "Was that some kind of dream?"
(Dutch) "Looked more like a memory to me."
(Romeo) "Memory of what? Who the hell were they? And what was that winged bastard we were just fighting having to do with that?"
(Jonas) "Captain, take us back to port."
(Captain) "No need to tell me again. RAISE THE SAILS, LET'S GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!"
Everyone slowly rose up, with Raelyn helping Duvalie up.
They all remained quiet on the ride back.
An hour passed as they finally reached the shore, reaching for their heads.
(Laura) "If we go to another ocean, it will be too soon..."
(Fie) "Let's go head back to the building and-..."
Fie frowned as her ARCUS unit was now beeping.
(Fie) "...Someone's been inside."
They all reached for their weapons and slowly approached it, including the door.
Percy and Jonas quickly scattered the townsfolk, Hilda drawing her axe and joining them.
The ODST's went near the door and silently held up their weapons, turning to the others and nodding.
Duvalie raised her shield and was the first one in, kicking down the door and drawing her sword.
(Duvalie) "WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!"
(Mila) "AAAAAGH!"
The young girl fell backwards, completely terrified of all the weapons suddenly pointing at her.
Romeo and Raelyn looked around the room to make sure no one else was present.
(Fie) "Hey...you're that girl who was talking to those kids."
(Mila) "I-I'M SORRY! I DIDN'T MEAN TO MAKE YOU ANGRY! I WAS JUST CURIOUS!"'
Fie turned to the blue devices she stuck on the walls and back to the girl.
(Mila) "U-Uh, I was just wanting to talk to the big yellow guy!"
Everyone turned to Raelyn, who looked back at the girl.
(Raelyn) "...What is it?"
(Mila) "I-I was just wanting to thank you for helping those kids? From yesterday?"
(Raelyn) "...Ah. I do not believe she means us harm."
Everyone slowly put away their weapons while Raelyn took off his helmet and knelt down.
(Raelyn) "Why did you break in here?"
(Mila) "The door was open, promise! At first I checked to see if you were home and...well, then I got curious."
(Elliot) "You could've gotten hurt! You're lucky it was just us, I don't think other mercenaries would be nice enough to let you go unscathed!"
Mila was about to say something before noticing Hilda.
(Mila) "M-MILADY!"
She quickly scrambled to get on one knee before Hilda sighed.
(Hilda) "Hey, come on kiddo. Get up, no need for that around me."
(Mila) "Are...are you guys just mercenaries?"
Raelyn cleared his throat to catch her attention.
(Raelyn) "Yes, we are. Do not mistake our intentions, we were just for the coin. But...give the children my regards. My name is Raelyn. Yours?"
(Mila) "M...Mila."
Raelyn nodded.
(Raelyn) "Then I will see you home. Everyone else we should prepare to get moving."
(Buck) "Right. Pack it up ladies, let's get ready to move."
(Dutch) "On it."
Mickey and Romeo nodded and checked around the house for leftover equipment.
Duvalie shrugged and stood in the corner with the members of Class VII. Hilda stayed with them as Raelyn walked out with Mila.
Fie activated her ARCUS unit and checked the screen.
The blue devices started to beep rapidly, making everyone turn around to see what the noise was.
(Mickey) "So...now can we know what that is?"
(Fie) "Yup. First we just gotta get away. No evidence and all that."
(Mickey) "...Oh, that explains why it looked familliar."
(Duvalie) "Huh? W-What is it?"
(Buck) "...Are we safe-"
(Fie) "I gotta push the button first. We're fine. We put these here last night in case we had to leave early."
(Elliot) "We made sure this building was abandoned and out of the way of everyone."
(Hilda) "Uh...what are they talking about?"
(Laura) "We have our things, let us get moving."
...
Raelyn walked alongside the girl, his helmet underneath his arm.
(Raelyn) "Mila, do your parents know you like to snoop around like this?"
(Mila) "Hah...y-yeah. It wasn't for anything bad, I promise!"
(Raelyn) "Hmph. Those children, who are they to you? Siblings?"
(Mila) "Nah, they're orphans. From the war..."
(Raelyn) "War?"
(Mila) "You know...the Five-year war? The one with the Church and Empire?"
(Raelyn) "Ah. My apologies, it seems I forgot."
(Mila) "Are you really mercenaries? Figured you would've remembered that at least."
(Raelyn) "...I am. My age is getting the better of me is all."
Mila raised an eyebrow at Raelyn's half assed excuse.
(Raelyn) "Regardless, you did not answer my question."
(Mila) "Oh, right. Well they were kids that were on the streets for a while. None of us really knew what to do, so I became friends with them! They ended up following me around everywhere for the past three years."
(Raelyn) "Then you have a good heart it seems. What are their names?"
(Mila) "The boy is Emil, and the girl is Lena."
(Raelyn) "Well then, take care of Emil and Lena. They are going to need you for the coming times."
(Mila) "Yeah..."
Raelyn stopped following when Mila approached a door, assuming it to be her house.
(Raelyn) "Take care then, Mila."
(Mila) "W-Wait, where will you guys go?"
(Raelyn) "I cannot say. Wherever the wind takes us I suppose."
(Mila) "Will...we see you again?"
Raelyn put on his helmet and turned to her.
(Raelyn) "If the Emperor wills it, then yes."
(Mila) "Emperor? Like, Emperor Edelgard?"
(Raelyn) "Er...different one."
KABOOM!
Raelyn turned to the source of the explosion, seeing his group semi-casually walking away from it.
(Mila) "What the?!"
(Raelyn) "Get inside. I will investigate."
Mila nodded and quickly went inside while Raelyn walked over to the group.
(Citizen) "Good goddess, the building collapsed on itself?!"
(Citizen 2) "No one was hurt, were they?"
(Citizen 3) "N-No, just-" cough cough "Some dust!"
(Fie) "Aaaand that's your answer to what they were."
(Duvalie) "Bombs?!"
(Laura) "We wanted to cover our tracks."
(Raelyn) "Would that not make them suspicious of us even more?"
(Elliot) "No more than they already were."
Buck's visor picked up signatures to their side, quietly watching them.
(Fie) "There's been people watching us ever since we arrived."
(Dutch) "Think it's those insurrectionists?"
(Hilda) "Too early to tell. We'll investigate things from our end."
(Mickey) "Well, good luck to ya then, ma'am."
Hilda nodded and went joined Percy and Jonas who were looking at the collapsed building.
(Buck) "Well then, mission accomplished on our end. Wonder how the other kids are doing."
(Duvalie) "More importantly, I want answers to whatever the hell's going on with this talk of separatists and that vision thing."
As they walked away from the town, Mila watched from the window.
(Mila) "Just who are you...?"

First, let’s get the obvious out of the way: former president Trump has raised $102 million since he left office, but aside from a recent donation of $100,000 to his chosen candidate in a Texas race which is not yet in the public disclosures (she lost), has spent none of it on anything or anyone but himself. Since January, he has convinced donors to fund his challenge to Biden’s election and to fund Trump-like candidates in the midterm elections. But election filings and a release of donors to the Arizona “audit” show he has not put any money toward either. So far, about $8 million has gone to the former president’s legal fees, while funds have also gone to aides.
The second piece of news that is surprising and yet not surprising is an ABC story revealing that on December 28, 2020, the then-acting pro-Trump head of the civil division of the Department of Justice, Jeffrey Clark, tried to get then–acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen and acting deputy attorney general Richard Donoghue to sign a letter saying: “The Department of Justice is investigating various irregularities in the 2020 election for President of the United States. The Department will update you as we are able on investigatory progress, but at this time we have identified significant concerns that may have impacted the outcome of the election in multiple States, including the State of Georgia.”
It went on to say, “While the Department of Justice believe[s] the Governor of Georgia should immediately call a special session to consider this important and urgent matter, if he declines to do so, we share with you our view that the Georgia General Assembly has implied authority under the Constitution of the United States to call itself into special session for [t]he limited purpose of considering issues pertaining to the appointment of Presidential Electors.”
The letter then made the point clearer, saying the Georgia legislature could ignore the popular vote and appoint its own presidential electors.
This is classic Trump: try to salt the media with the idea of an “investigation,” and then wait for the following frenzy to convince voters that the election was fraudulent. Such a scheme was at the heart of Trump’s demand that Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky announce an investigation into Hunter Biden, and the discrediting of 2016 Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton over an investigation into her use of a private email server.
In this case, Donoghue and Rosen wanted no part of this antidemocratic scheme. Donoghue told Clark that there was no evidence of fraud that would have changed the outcome of the election and wrote: “There is no chance that I would sign this letter or anything remotely like this.” Rosen agreed, saying “I am not prepared to sign such a letter.”
The less obvious story today is the more interesting one.
Trump and his loyalists feed off Americans who have been dispossessed economically since the Reagan revolution that began in 1981 started the massive redistribution of wealth upward. Those disaffected people, slipping away from the secure middle-class life their parents lived, are the natural supporters of authoritarians who assure them their problems come not from the systems leaders have put in place, but rather from Black people, people of color, and feminist women.
President Joe Biden appears to be trying to combat this dangerous dynamic not by trying to peel disaffected Americans away from Trump and his party by arguing against the former president, but by reducing the pressure on those who support him.
A study from the Niskanen Center think tank shows that the expanded Child Tax Credit, which last month began to put up to $300 per child per month into the bank accounts of most U.S. households with children, will primarily benefit rural Americans and will give a disproportionately large relative boost to their local economies. According to the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent, “the...nine states that will gain the most per capita from the expanded child allowance are all red states.”
The White House noted today that the bipartisan infrastructure deal it has pushed so hard not only will bring high-speed internet to every household in the U.S., but also has within it $3.5 billion to reduce energy costs for more than 700,000 low-income households.
Also today, after pressure from progressive Democrats, especially Representative Cori Bush (D-MO), who led a sit-in at the Capitol to call for eviction relief, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that in counties experiencing high levels of community transmission of Covid-19, it is extending until October 3 the federal moratorium on evictions that ended this weekend. It is doing so as a public health measure, but it is also an economic one. It should help about 90% of renters—11 million adults—until the government helps to clear the backlog of payments missed during the pandemic by disbursing more of the $46 billion Congress allocated for that purpose.
Today, the president called out Republican governors who have taken a stand against mask wearing and vaccine mandates even as Covid-19 is burning across the country again. Currently, Florida and Texas account for one third of all new Covid cases in the entire country, and yet their Republican governors, Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott, are signing legislation to keep Floridians and Texans unmasked and to prevent vaccine mandates. Biden said that he asks “these governors, ‘Please, help.’ But if you aren’t going to help, at least get out of the way of the people who are trying to do the right thing. Use your power to save lives.”
At a Democratic National Committee fundraiser last night, Biden told attendees that Democrats “have to keep making our case,” while Republicans offer “nothing but fear, lies, and broken promises.” “We have to keep cutting through the Republican fog,” he said, “that the government isn't the problem and show that we the people are always the solution.” He continued, “We've got to demonstrate that democracies can work and protect.”

Just two things. I live in a rural red county in Virginia. I have always been astounded that folks here predominantly vote Republican against their best interests.
To get votes here, Democrats HAVE to make two things clear. First and foremost - that Democrats are not "coming to take people's guns away." That is the biggest fear out here in red country - the predominant reason folks vote Republican. Gun control is a vote killer and will be until Democrats out maneuver the NRA - and make crystal clear that great-granddaddy's hunting rifle is not at risk.
Second. ALL of the folks here benefiting from social welfare DO NOT associate that money as coming from programs supported by Democrats. That is "my govamint check" - and the government in their minds is Republican. The Democrats must inundate rural areas with advertising that clearly links child care money and internet services with Biden and the Democratic Party in conjunction with exposing Republicans who vote against the bill. Persistent Hard Ball is the only thing that is going to work here.
The former president will continue to “run” for president as long as the money keeps rolling in. Doubtless, as far as he’s concerned, the money is his to do as he pleases. The accounts should be closely monitored by DoJ and charges should be filed for any improper use of the funds.
Just now the thought came to mind that any of the donated funds spent on personal expenses, including legal defense fees, qualifies as income and should be subject to income taxes. Those taxes would be yet more personal expenses that could not be paid from political donations.
The tax man is going to be the one that gets him.

Life Rant
For the few people in here...sorry lmao this is long as hell.
Lately I've been feeling like...garbage. I know there's no one on this place that really follows me, so this is me posting to the void.
I have been dealing with a lot of health issues related to my mental health and weight. I've gained nearly twenty pounds in a year, and no matter what I do my weight doesn't budge. I work out regularly, Ive been trying to eat better but...my only thought is its because I'm working a desk job now - which I fucking hate with a fury. And I know my weight isnt the end of the world - it just really, really fucks with my mental health. I've always felt ugly. The only time I didn't was when I was super thin which I know is problematic - and I know that's part of my mental health...like my aunt died from an ED. And my mom definitely had/has an ED even if she's gotten much better about it in the past few years...
And I'm finally getting my face to clear up after wearing these masks for a year - a year! But I'm still dealing with the healing process and I'm anxious it will scar. I've worked this entire pandemic at a job I *hate* just to you know, finally pay off my student loans just go back to school so maybe I can do something I love. But even at 25 and providing for myself, I hardly got any financial help. The only thing saving me is my grades that got me a decent transfer scholarship.
But the first school I applied to wanted my high school transcript, even though I have an associate's degree, and because I'm, frankly, stupid I somehow missed that they needed it. So they threw out my application that I spent an otherwise four hours writing for.
So I'm going to Eastern, which frankly will be better for my mental health, but they don't have a tuition free program. So I'm going to have to borrow money after just finally paying off my single year at a liberal arts college debt that I took on when I was 17 (it ended up being like 30k to pay off). And it's all because I didn't fucking read right. So much for being a good student, I guess.
But it wouldn't have mattered because they would've hardly taken any of my classes despite most of them being from down the road and for an associate's degree! And even Eastern is giving me a hard time, despite my degree they say I don't have the basic level biology course - my degree is biology focused! I'm going into ecology! I have taken genetics, conservation biology, anatomy and physiology, cellular biology but I don't have intro bio? So now I have to test out, on top of working full time. Which is fine, its a good refresher...I'm just so overwhelmed with life right now. I have a stack of over 100 flash cards and I'm just anxious.
This is a year after my partner went through an ugly break up with their old fiance (we were poly), and their ex was an abusive POS who once told them if they came out as anything other than their assigned gender, he wouldn't date them anymore. He gaslit them constantly, made them feel like hell. So we finally got out, but he wanted the house they got together or 10k. He made over double what they make - and he always forced them to pay half the bills, including half of his fucking protein bullshit because it was "groceries." He knew they didn't have the funds. Because our friends are amazing, we were able to buy him off but he left the house trashed.
It fucking sucked, and they were also responsible for getting his name off the house which meant a refinance that we could hardly afford. We got lucky we were able to do it, but they hardly got anything back for it. And it was a *nightmare*. We finally got it done, after pulling teeth and it took six months. Four months longer than they said. And that entire time they were forced to occasionally reach out to him, their old abuser.
Finally we were free, but then I started having further issues at work. Between the pandemic, and working in a heavily red area during the election, I cried a lot. I work in customer service and while I make okay money for the industry, I'm constantly burned out. My colleagues are okay, but it feels stupid to leave just to find a job for three months to go back to school. Then I started being short in my drawer (I'm a teller at a bank). The final straw was being short $500. Now I'm on a work plan, and if Im short again, I'm out. And it's my fault. I don't know how it has been happening. So now I'm always on edge at work, triple checking everything. And I could leave, I could get another job but there's no promise I'll make what I do now, and in order for me to pay for the chunk of school I need to, I have to put away a certain amount every month.
I do have a grant of sorts for 5k per semester to help with bills, which will alleviate a lot once August arrives. And I know I'm crazy lucky to have that. So sometimes I feel like such an asshole about it. But we have a house to pay for and bills to pay. Just like everyone else. Ugh, I don't know.
I talked to my doctor about my weight, came in with calorie intake numbers and how much I work out with zero change. I cut out pop entirely from drinking it every day. Nothing has helped. So we switched my meds from Lexapro to Wellbutrin to see if I lose weight because of that. Nope, just having more mental break downs, steady weight, and my resting heart rate is abnormally high, stopping me from making a little extra cash donating plasma. So now I'm switching back to Lexapro with nothing gained other than. You know. Feeling like shit. Next up? Birth control coming out of my arm. Don't really need it anyway. And maybe that will help? But I don't think so. I'm not sure what to do.
I am genuinely trying to be healthy, eating more whole foods. More veggies. More home cooked meals. I love to cook, I'm just tired. And sometimes the air fryer and oven baked frozen foods are too easy to pass up. I'm trying to always eat breakfast. I'm working out again, we have a gym membership but there are so many men there and I dont always feel comfortable, because my partner has been anemic and they can't go yet. So I use our bike in the living room and do home workouts.
But when I did this last time there was zero change in weight or anything. Even when I ate really, really clean for three weeks and worked out for most days, tracking calories and everything. Nothing changed. My thyroid is fine, we've already checked it. I'm just tired.
This past year, other than being with my partner has fucking sucked. And this doesn't even cover all the shit they've dealt with with switching to they/them and a name change. I love them so much, and love that they are finally comfy but their parents were assholes about it. And that matters. It does, and I get it. I just wish I could help them more. I wish we had a break, a breather for longer than a day. Even then I can't relax, I'm too on edge. There's too much to be done. I need to earn money, I need to clean, I need to focus. I need to be productive in some way to justify if I'm not working on those things. It's...all dumb.

INFINITY
Summary: QUEEN AU where Rog (aka Rowan Queen) is young single dad struggling to make it into music industry.
Warnings: Fluff, Fluff, Fluff, and swearing.
Word Count: 1926
Okay so this is the closest picture I could find to Row's state in the next two chapters:
Chapter 2: PIPER
Row has a lot questions to ask himself, and he knows it's on only his own future at stake, but also The Prune's, who may be getting a name.
Of all the things Rowan Queen might have aspired to be, -a Rockstar, a Roger Taylor level drummer...- a 19 year old solo dad wasn't amongst them.
All he knew was that since he had first held that small Wrinkly being and her eyes had met his, she had stolen a part of him, and that the only way to feel completed again was being with her.
Ridiculously sappy, he knew.
"But that's what makes best parents" Callie, the nurse who had introduced them assured him one day when he confessed his thoughts out loud, while he watched her sponge bath the infant "Don't feel stupid, or embarrassed for feeling that way, Row. In fact, that's exactly how it should be. Always. And those fathers who deny it or fight that connection, end up estranged from their kids as they grow up. Take it from a daughter who hasn't seen her father in 5 years"
But, alas, there he was, living between his flat and the Hospital's newborn aisle, because he just couldn't get that one girl out his head, despite don't knowing how he had come to this.
"Well I haven't seen mine in 9"
"And that scares you, don't it?"
He gasped, and nodded slowly.
"Is better having no father figure at all than having a bad one. Just like I think your Prune is luckier having one brave dad than a coward mom"
"And two fit parents?" He asked, eyes flicking to the untouched pile of adoption papers
"Well that's the ideal situation, isn't it? But the weight always ends up relaying more on the mother, you know? The father always steps back, because society still thinks it's more acceptable for us women to raise the children because, of course, we have deeper connection with 'em for carrying them around for nine months and blah blah blah." She got the towel and handed it to him before laying the squirming 2 day old In his arms.
He carefully wrapped it around her and sat down so he wouldn't drop her, then started to stroke her soft delicate skin with the towel.
"But that's bullshit." Callie continued "That's an excuse you men came up with to sneak out from changing nappies. But I believe you guys are just as capable of taking care of children as us. And that you might be the ultimate proof of it." She gathered her hair in a ponytail, and smiled at father and daughter, as Row was now
leaning back on the rocking chair with the Prune, -as all the staff had begun to call her- laid on his bare chest.
"So forget whatever prejudices you have. This kid needs you, she doesn't know nothing about what's going on, she misses her little warm oven, the voice she was so used to hear and that she'll never hear again because that world has left her behind the first chance she got and she's very confused.
But also, She doesn't know about gender stereotypes, or that she's a girl. But she knows you're here. And her instincts tell her you're safety, and warmth, and love. Sure, I'm around a lot too, but soon you'll be discharged and everything she'll have will be you. A d then she'll grow up and will be forever grateful for everything you will have done for her"
The teen nodded, taking in all the words but remaining silent. Quiet moments like this -when she was calm and content- were quite meaningful.
"I just want the best for her. And I'm not sure I am"
"Well, from where I'm standing, you're pretty much up there. Nobody gets her to settle down as quickly as you do. That has to mean something, right? Newborns have this amazing instinct of detecting sources of love and protection. And you are hers. She trusts you: trust yourself"
Days went by, and Row found himself getting up early in order to go back to hospital. At home he was restless, as questions filled his head.
Was she better off with him?
Was he ready?
How could Callie be so much more sure about the whole thing than he was?
What if be wasn't good enough
What if mom was right?
Why did he want to become a dad in the first place?
Should he just sign those papers before it was too late and forget the whole thing?
The sixth day, he made his way to the hospital as usual, but something felt off. What it was? He couldn't put a finger on it, so he shrugged it off and entered the NICU area where she was.
"Hey, lovely one, look at you, a bit bigger each day" he cooed at his yet unnamed daughter, as he put his hand through the incubator hole to let her know his ore6 "So strong and so beautiful" he smiled brightly as her small hand closed around his finger.
"Yes, this way please" he heard a male voice and turned his eyes to see a doctor and a man and a woman who were probably in their thirties
"Oh my gosh she's so tiny!" The woman exclaimed, walking towards the glass
"Who are you?" Row asked, stepping defensively in front of her before she could reach the baby.
"You must be Rowan Queen?" The man held his hand out "We're the adopting couple..."
"What?" He basically slapped it away "No! Who told you she's in for adoption?"
"Mister, you signed the adoption papers" the Doctor said
"No I didn't!"
"Yes you did. Here" the doctor looked through the pile of papers on his hands and showed him.
He snatched the file from him. That was his signature but he didn't remember signing anything. He may have doubts about being a dad, but Callie was right, the little prune and him needed each other. They belonged together And he wasn't gonna give her away. The only way was through.
"There must be a mistake. She's not up for adoption"
"Err... Yes she is" the man said
"No she's not! I should know better than you, huh?"
"We've heard about the mother. So sad. But babies need their mommys, don't they?" The woman cooed from the other side of the incubator
"You can't take her" if looks could kill, Row would have murdered her right then and there.
"Mister..."
"No! He's my daughter!"
"Sir, signing this you gave up your parental rights"
"And what the hell does that even mean?"
"Legally, she's not yours anymore"
"But I don't remember signing anything!"
"But this is your signature"
"Yes. But I... I didn't mean it"
The woman scoffed "Well you clearly did."
"Mind your fucking business!" He snapped, before turning to the doctor "Look, I really don't know how my signature is there but I need you to... I don't know, forget it, okay?"
"Forget it?"
"Yes! Whatever that stupid paper says, I'm keeping her. And I will do everything you want me to"
"Sorry. There's nothing we can do about it now. You could take this to court but... It's a lost cause"
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"A 19 year old against a healthy, stable marriage?" He used the same arguments mom had
"But I'm her dad..." His voice quivered, as his baby started to cry.
"Don't worry sweetheart. Mommy and Daddy are here now" the woman said "Our Judy"
"Judy? What the fuck, you're not naming her Judy!"
"What we do with our daughter is our business, sir" the woman said "Now please, leave us alone"
"No! She's not Judy. She's my prune, I'm gonna prove to all of you fuckers wrong, because I can fucking do this if I want you. Not because I wanted to at first, or because I can't have my own kid like you; she's my own kid and she belongs with me. And I may not be a middle upper class, or drive a goddamn Mercedes, or have a huge house and a stable boring job at whatever office. And she may not have a goddamn mother, or her own room. So what? She has me. Because I'm the one who's been here for the whole bloody week worrying about her. Not you, not her mother. So fuck off and choose another kid!"
Two men who Row hadn't even seen arrive took him, as he fought and called his crying daughter "PIPER! PIPER! DADDY WILL GET YOU! I'M YOUR DAD, DON'T FORGET!"
Then he woke up with a jolt in that same hospital room, as his newborn baby awoke too beside him
He quickly sat up and leaned over to place a hand on her tummy, to check that she was real, letting out a sigh of relief when feeling her warm skin
It had been just a dream. Well, a nightmare rather than a dream. But she was there, safe next to him
"Hey, baby girl. Yes, hello darling. You had a good night? Gave trouble to the nurses?" he asked, stroking her torso "Are we hungry?" He offered his little finger, and she began to suck on it as response, which made him chuckle. "Alright, I'll call so they get us a bottle okay?"
3 minutes later, he was sitting on the green rocking chair, Baby Prune on his bare chest -because apparently skin to skin helped parents and kiddos bond or whatever- as he gave her the bottle.
He had to admit, ever since he had learned how to properly hold her, he looked forward to feeding, because he had grown to love these little moments, and by the end of them, be always felt closer and more in love with that tiny, wrinkled human being which he had helped make.
Who was a part of him somehow, and who he couldn't imagine his life without despite having only known her for 6 days.
She was so amazing. So mesmerizing. With her clear grey eyes and her peachy skin, and her adorable ears.
He just couldn't get his eyes off her.
"You're gonna come home with me in a couple days, and..." He realized he hadn't really thought about a plan. He had just moved out mom's, and the apartment was still empty. He'd have to start getting stuff. But anyway "... And we'll figure something out. I'm not gonna renounce to you. No ma'am. You've got me. And I've got you. And I'll look after you and make sure you're always happy and safe and... loved. I fucking love you so damn much and I don't even know how did this happen. I mean you're not even a week old and you've already turned my life upside down just by bloody existing. You can't even understand what I'm saying. But here I am, making all this plans and Shit... I, who never thinks ahead, who never knows his future beyond what meal he's gonna get. But I... Damn. Do you babies have like special powers or something? Do you like... Is it a defensive instinct? Like you manage to make us go nuts about you by casting a spell it whatever so we'll stay enchanted? Because this is fucking ridiculous."
She finished the bottle and he put it aside.
"Speaking about plans, we can't keep calling you Baby Prune. We're gonna have to choose a name. A pretty unique gorgeous name for a special, perfect little princess like you. So, let's see" he changed his hold on her so they were face to face. Something the nurses had called.. ? He wasn't really sure but he had got hand on it "Yes, hello" he smiled helplessly at the sight of her "Baby girl. Baby girl" he cooed absentmindedly as he analysed her features
Then he remembered his dream. He had called her Piper. He wasn't even sure if he had heard that name before but he liked it. It was original, cool, rare enough people would associate it with her but not awful, like other names he had heard.
"Piper" he whispered, tasting the word while contemplating her face. It sounded good to him. "Piper Queen" he said, a bit louder this time as her tiny hand closed around a strand of his blonde hair. "You like that? Piper?"
She just blinked, but he interpreted it as an affirmative answer
"It's settled, then. Piper. Pips for short." He smiled, and brought her back to his bare chest so he could lull her back to sleep with his rambling, which had worked the previous times.
"My Piper" he kissed her head and began to rub her back "I'm so scared honestly. I won't lie to ya, I have no idea what I'm doing but you can rely on me. I'm good at improvising so I'll figure it out. Don't worry. But you gotta take it easy, hm? If you have a bit of patience, it'll be just fine. And about this?" He reached for the papers -which were unsigned- and ripped them off "Fuck it. Just fuck it."
