Who are your favourite spop characters and why?

Oh man, I genuinely love every single character in SPOP lol so ranking lists are always switching around in my head for who I like the most. Most of the top contenders trade places on a whim too.

I think I have to say Catra as my top fave, but really she's just the one I find easiest to write for. She's complex and messy, and my comfort characters tend to be short angry women who are fucking trying okay. She tends to dominate the top of the list because of how many facets there are both to her and the way she perceives things. I just, god, I love this catgirl. There are better people out there who've written love letters to Catra and they're right.

Glimmer is my next favorite who sometimes knocks Catra off her lofty throne. And I gotta be honest, it's always a shock when I realize that. Confession time: when I first was watching and all we had was Season 1 out, Glimmer was the only character I actually hated. Yeah. I liked Swift Wind more than her at that point. And it's because I sold her EXTREMELY short in S1. As the show went on I realized that Glimmer's also a super complex character and not just a perky privileged girl next door trope. She's one of my favorite characters in the whole thing now because she's so fun, intense, and well meaning. She also hits my small angry women who are fucking trying okay comfort needs, but it's absolutely refreshing to have that in someone who is also (mostly) working hard to be a friendly, upbeat type.

Entrapta is someone who is always vying for spots 1 and 2 on this list. There was a brief stint where she was my favorite character in the show, and so she deserves to be on this list of who's my fave and why. As to why, LOOK AT HER! Chaos mad scientist gremlin! *chef kiss* Love her or hate her, this is what peak human performance looks like baby! I think Entrapta would handily kick Glimmer and Catra's asses on this list if she'd had a little more screen time for development and screen time with her being treated more seriously. I know I just cracked a joke here about her chaos status, but I do wish we'd had more with her that was serious. I love the moment in S5 where Entrapta, so fucking quietly, explains that she thought she could use her tech to be a better friend. Like, damn, she has Adora levels of "my worth to others is based on what exchanges I can make for their love and affection" but with less self sacrificing and more robots that can blow you up. Fans have picked up a lot of slack to help showcase Entrapta's nuances and talk through why she reacts the ways she does. (not all SPOP fans mind you, but some) But yeah, I love her desperately.

Shadow Weaver is also on this top contenders section. I'm less interested in breaking her down as a character and finding complexities (and there are plenty to be found), although I do like taking some jaunts into her head. I have several short meta pieces I wrote throughout the series about her, none of which I want to share as they've changed as we learned more about her. Man, I just- I love Shadow Weaver. She is a fantastic villain/antagonist and I think she's possibly the best done one on the show. When Weaver is on screen she has my damned attention, even in the background, in a way no one else does. Prime is a bigger threat and more disturbing, he's a great Big Bad for the series. But if these two were in a room together I wouldn't look at him unless he's center frame lol. Fantastic character!

And because I'm sure someone will want to say shit on that opinion, liking a character doesn't mean I would condone a real life person doing the things she did or acting the way she acted. But she is a cartoon character who is supposed to be awful, and the whole crew did a fantastic job making that happen. And as such I love Shadow Weaver.

After my top contenders it's an amorphous blob of Adora, Angella, Scorpia. Then Bow, Lonnie, and Perfuma.

Then another amorphous blob of literally everyone else.

Again, I genuinely enjoy every character on this show and I really love reading meta on them. I've been really enjoying a lot of Hordak centered things I've seen recently, which have given me a lot to think about for my own assumptions as well as giving him more depth.

Huge shout out to fic writers who have, like, 5 PoV characters and help me fall more in love with characters from this show!

The Problem with Season Five

this is already going to have a lot of you in the replies yelling at me. obviously, massive SPOILERS for s5 of she ra and the princesses of power if you haven't already seen it.

okay, so She Ra is definitely a kids' show, but it has a lot of themes aimed towards an older audience: abuse, war, found family, destiny and knowing who you are. I loved She Ra because it made me feel empowered, made me feel seen. after this last season, however, I don't feel the same. I will, however, talk about what it did well.

What She-Ra s5 did RIGHT

I very much enjoyed seeing the character development for most characters come to the forefront here. For example, SW returned to her original motivations. When she lived in Mystacor with the other sorcerers, her thirst for power was borne of a desire to fight the Horde. When she was rejected, then she chose to do what she did. We see a return to that in s5, where she takes a stand against Prime by enlisting Castaspella to stop her if she tries to take any power for herself. She ends up just wanting to help, to do what she can, which was excellent. Glimmer, Bow and a bunch of other characters are given some love here as well. I especially enjoyed seeing Bow and Mermista take on leadership positions in the absence of Adora; it was an excellent look into another facet of their personalities.

Character interactions in non-serious moments were, for the most part, good. Swift Wind and Scorpia being bros was not something I knew I needed but something I want more of. Netossa basically being Batman and knowing the weaknesses of everyone around her was great and an iconic scene. Bow thinking Catra was super adorable was also an excellent moment in the season and I could watch 9 more seasons worth of that. Something that surprised me was Entrapta's "not good with people"-ness being talked about and addressed by the other characters and explained by her; I wasn't sure if that was ever gonna be talked about in the show.

Side note: thank you Crew-Ra for giving Scorpia her own musical number, it was great.

Prime was also a fascinating enemy. He's this sort of religious figure, this world destroyer who's been around for seemingly centuries, maybe much longer. He's cold, calm and calculated. I've seen it pointed out that he's everything Hordak is not. He's manipulative, knows body language and facial expressions, and has a perfect grasp on how to get exactly what we wants. My favorite aspect of this season was the hive mind control. This was a very interesting plotline to me, and I thoroughly enjoyed HiveMind!Catra as well as Wrong Hordak. I loved the idea of pitting allies against each other and the angst and emotional weight that carried.

Going to use that point to segue into one of this season's strengths: Netossa and Spinnerella. Wow! We get a chance to see what a healthy queer/wlw relationship looks like, and two background characters get major upgrades in relevance. Two diversity points for one being a big girl and for the couple being interracial (in our world anyway), but diversity is the norm is SPOP and we might have to stan forever. It was extremely heartwarming and resulted in one of my favorite scenes to ever show up in animated media (one which I'll be stealing to add to my vows if I ever get married):

It was beautiful and I will absolutely never shut up about it.

There were some beautiful moments this season!! Absolutely gorgeous. A highlight for me cinematically was episode 5, which will probably bother some people when I say what I will below. I will be honest, the new transformation sequence and the scene of Adora holding Catra as She-Ra was powerful and had my heart pounding with excitement. It was awesome.

On the other hand...

What She-Ra s5 did WRONG

I'm going to break my issues with the final season down one by one, starting with the narrative of abuse.

From the very beginning, abuse is the most prevalent theme in the show. Prime (HP) abuses Hordak, Hordak abuses SW, SW abuses both Adora and Catra, and Catra abuses Adora. I liked the Crew-Ra tackling this issue. Abused people abuse people, right?

Why was everyone redeemed in s5? (Well, except for Prime, he was blasted away by She-Ra.) Hordak was given a blank slate to start over, even though he was the reason Etheria was war torn for at least a few decades; SW was given a hero's sacrifice, where at the end of her life she finally decides to do some good; and Catra is immediately forgiven for doing one good thing and all trust in placed in her simultaneously.

Hordak and H. Prime as abusers are pretty cut and dry; at no point are they ever remorseful for their actions, except for Hordak in the case of being abusive to Entrapta. SW is much more of an interesting character to analyze, because her motivations are geared directly towards herself. This seems to change in the final season, when she returns to her original motivations from back when she was in Mystacor. Defending her home. In her pursuit of the power needed to defend Etheria from the Horde, she fell into darkness. She began to abuse Adora and Catra.

One could argue that the hero's sacrifice she was given for redemption was unneeded. SW was an individual addicted to power. She was manipulative, using fake affection as a means to control. She didn't deserve a redemption. The only evidence we have of this supposed change of heart is a line to Castaspella: "...and stop me if I try to take the power for myself." Okay... so, SW, um... what changed your mind? Was it Micah? Because at no point has he forgiven you. In fact, there should've been much more hostility between the two of you (which is a point I'll address in a moment). In all honesty, the relationship between SW and Micah reminds me of what should've happened between Catra and Glimmer, or Catra and Scorpia.

And Catra... My problem with her story is that she was kinda just... forgiven? instantly. no repercussions, no long talks about feelings, no... consequences. Catra got the girl and that was it. A small list of things she did over 4 seasons, in no certain order:

Scratched what was implied were scarring marks down Adora's back

Was the cause of Angella's "death" #angelladeservedbetter

Kidnapped both Glimmer and Bow

Opened a world-ending portal all to ensure Adora failed

Also pushed Adora into what looked like an abyss

Verbally abused Scorpia into leaving

Wanted to pit Corrupted!She-Ra against her friends (dehumanization)

Got Entrapta sent to Beast Island, a deadly place no one ever returns from

And this is just the stuff off the top of my head. We all knew Catra was going to get a redemption, but this one was completely undeserved. She apologized to Adora and Entrapta. Two very short apologies for what canonly was at minimum, months of abuse, manipulation, intent to kill (which is literally mentioned by Adora) and general disregard for anyone or anything but revenge for something that didn't even deserve it. The entire cast should've been outraged. Glimmer in particular had a very big reason not to ever forgive Catra ("I'm not losing another parent!"), but it was all glossed over.

The biggest issue with season 5 was the abuse plotline completely dropped. You can't spend 4 seasons explaining how the cycle of abuse affects you and everyone around you... and shelve it. And we know the reason why it was shelved.

Let me first preface this with the fact that I am super happy we got representation. As a queer nblw who grew up feeling alone, it's so good to see things changing in media. An onscreen wlw kiss on a kids' show is groundbreaking and I'm very happy that She-Ra broke this barrier.

But all representation is not good representation. Catra and Adora is not a good representation of a healthy relationship.

Catra is shown throughout the series to be very unstable. This is even prevalent in season 5, when Adora "chooses SW" over Catra, she runs away. This breaks Adora's heart. The last thing that Catra needs is a relationship when she hasn't even confronted the issues that she has. There's no healing done in season 5, no therapy as the fandom loved to meme about, no long talks about forgiveness and the hurt caused. There's no callback to any of the pain and anguish that Catra put Adora through. Catra may love Adora, but if there is no healing done for the both of them, their relationship will fail. They will fall into the same cycle again. Adora will do something Catra doesn't like, Catra will do what she's done for all of the show, and it will repeat until something breaks.

I'm going to talk about the implications of the ending we have now, and feel free to argue with me.

She-Ra is a kids' show. Abuse is one of the main themes. Catra is shown to be an abuser. Here's what we are teaching younger audiences:

a. if you love someone enough, maybe they'll change

b. everyone deserves a second chance

c. your abuser will change as long as you're loyal and never stop trying to love them

d. things someone does to hurt you mean nothing in the wake of forgiveness

e. if someone who hurt you changes suddenly and wants to be back in your life, you should let them back in

Character interactions for the things that mattered (plot threads from previous seasons, general personality clashes, etc) were absent this season, in the moments where they mattered the most. (The best three in my opinion were Scorpia and Perfuma, the BFS inviting Catra in, and Mermista and Entrapta.) Glimmer and Adora should've had their time to talk. Scorpia should've gotten to say her piece to Catra. SW and Micah should've interacted more. Micah and Glimmer should've gotten more than an introduction!

I'm not going to get into how the entire final season was wrapped around making Catra and Adora get together (a fundamental writing no-no; it never ends up working), or how it was bad writing. I just want everyone to think critically for one moment. There are so many other glaring issues in what was, overall, a stellar show. If there was another season, or some mini episodes where the characters talk out their problems and past transgressions against each other, then I could excuse She-Ra. But I doubt we're going to get any of that. So I won't.

Adora’s day was...confusing. A real up and down and back again affair. It started out a bit trying, with her falling out of bed...on top of Catra who had also fallen out of bed earlier but was too tired to get back up and was very unhappy when Adora landed on her with all the grace of a Hoard battle ship running out of fuel mid-flight.

(Catra’s words and not Adora’s, obviously.)

Once they both calmed down and Catra sheepishly finished putting Band-Aids on the scratches she gave Adora in her sleep addled panic, the morning went on a bit better when Catra decided to make Adora breakfast. Insisted, even.

She had roped Bow into teaching her how to make his dad’s pancakes, and claimed she had gotten pretty good at it. Catra showing interest in baking (as well as subjecting herself to Bow’s sometimes overly strict way of teaching) was surprising enough, what was even more surprising is that she had in fact gotten better at it.

Now, instead of her attempts producing a fire that nearly consumed half of Bright Moon, or unleashing a miasma of noxious pancake gas (nicknamed “Catrium Cyanide” by Entrapta), she simply presented Adora with a lump of...something that might have once been a pancake. If you tilted your head a certain way and squinted.

Since Adora loved Catra more than anything in the universe, and did not want to ruin that precious face of hope she sported, she did not divulge that opinion and instead stuffed her face full of the...pseudo-pancake lump with a smile. “Wow! It’s...really something!”

Catra took a bite herself and frowned, “nice try Adora, never thought I’d miss Hoard rations...”

“H-Hey, at least it’s better than the brown rations!”

“Adora, Swift Wind could make something better than the brown rations.”

A beat of silence passed and they laughed for a minute at the image, before they scrapped that attempt at breakfast and went on with their day.

And the day just couldn’t seem to decide on whether or not it would be a good one; one second she and Catra were sparring in the training room, blows and parries thrown between flirtations, and then just as Adora had pinned Catra down and dove for her victory kiss a guard that was carrying a mop and bucket slipped and poured them both with muddy water.

Once they washed up they decided to walk in the gardens, holding hands in quiet compony in the early afternoon. They took a seat on a bunch flanked by two massive bushes sculpted to look like a soaring Pegasus, the sun shining in Catra’s eyes as she fumbled with something in her pocket. When she opened her mouth to say something when Perfuma called out of a sudden, having decided on a surprise visit to Bright Moon.

Adora talked with her for a while, side-eyeing Catra who fumbled with her pocket again and shock her head with a smile.

That was how the rest of the day went, Catra would take Adora somewhere private, fumble with her pocket, and just as soon as she was about to say something someone would come out of nowhere to interrupt them. It kept happening all the way to dinner, Catra looking more and more morose as it did, with Adora unable to really talk to her about it before something else came up.

As they made their way to the dinner room, Adora put her arm around Catra’s waist and brought her flush with her, Adora enjoying the warmth of her girlfriend’s fur against her. “We’ll talk after dinner, okay?” She kissed the side of her head when Catra simply shrugged her shoulders, “hey, I promise, okay?”

It took a moment but Catra turned to her, kissed her lightly with a smile and said, “yeah, alright, it’s just...” Again, fumbling with her pocket, “...i-it’s something kinda...big.”

Hearing Catra stumble over her words was one thing, but Adora was completely stumped as to what the magicat would consider “big” enough to be this cagy about it.

Deciding to let it go they went to dinner with Bow and Glimmer...and the rest of the princesses, who had also decided to show up for some odd reason, though the sight of them wasn’t unwelcome to Adora, having not seen them for a while on account of all the responsibilities they had in their own kingdoms.

Seeing the large crowd seemed to make Catra a bit green around the gills, but she seemed to quickly shake it off, the rest of dinner going off rather pleasantly. Adora caught up with the rest of her friends, but in the back of her head she couldn’t stop thinking about what Catra wanted to tell her.

Her wondering ceased when Glimmer got up and tapped her spoon to her glass (properly queen like, Adora was torn between crying and laughing, Angella would have been proud) to get everyone’s attention.

“Everyone! Thank you all for coming here today,” Glimmer grabbed Bow’s hand as she directed a smile at all of her gathered friends, “it’s been three years since we finally brought peace to Etheria, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate it than with all the people I love.”

Everyone gave a warm cheer at that, Seahawk being the loudest followed closely by Frosta and Scorpia.

“And...since we’re all here, there’s something I want to say...Bow.” Suddenly, Glimmer motioned for one of the guard to bring her something, a small box, which she then handed to the confused archer.

Adora was confused herself, though the rest of the table, a suddenly tense Catra included, seemed to understand right away what was happening.

“You’ve been with me...pretty much my whole life,” Glimmer’s smile was warm and her eyes shone with tears as she presented Bow with the small box, “through my victories, failures, tragedies...I can’t fathom living a single day with out you, so...” she opened the box, an inside was a small, silver ring adorned with a gleaming pink and white jewel. “...will you marry me?”

A tense moment passed before Bow gathered Glimmer in his arms and kissed her, followed by the whole room bursting into loud applause and cheers. The room mobbed the newly made fiancés, and Adora was going to join them when she noticed the chair next to her was empty.

Giving a quick apology to her friends, Adora went out to search for her. Thanks to years of experience of hunting down upset magicats in the labyrinth that was the Fright Zone, it didn’t take her long to find Catra sitting on a balcony, staring out at the moon.

“Catra?” She called out carefully, not really knowing what was going through her partner’s mind and not wanting to scare her. “Is everything okay? You just disappeared.”

“I’m fine.” The dismissal was quick and sharp, a shadow of who Catra used to be before she got ahold of herself, before she let out a frustrated breath, “...sorry, just...it’s nothing.”

“No. it’s not.” Adora placed herself next to Catra, reaching out an arm to rub her shoulder, “you’ve been trying to tell me something all day, and then after Glimmer proposes you just run off? Catra what’s eating you?”

“What’s eating me?” She snapped, glaring out at the far distance instead of Adora, though she was starting to snarl. “I have this big stupid day planned, I practice for weeks, and then her majesty just-!”

Adora was just getting more confused, “Catra-?”

Another frustrated growl left the magicat, who shoved a hand into the pocket she was fidgeting with all day and pulled out a...box.

A small, brown box.

Like the one-

Before she could contemplate it further, Catra shoved it at her, nearly knocking her over, “here! Take it!” She buried her face in her knees with a tired huff, “today’s busted anyways, might as well just ...”

“Catra...this is beautiful...” Adora could only stare in amazement at the ring Catra gave her, a golden band with wing-like embellishments that resembled her sword’s hilt, with a blue gem standing proud in the middle. “Where...where did you get this...”

Catra looked at her for a moment, a bit surprised, before she blushed and scratched her nose, “Bows...Bows dads helped me look for stuff in a First One’s ruin. Found the jewel there, made sure it wasn’t anything crazy or whatever, and got Entrapta to make the band so...” she shrugged, “y’know, no big deal.”

“Yes big deal!” She gave Catra a playful punch on the arm, wiping the tears of joy from her eyes, “you were trying to ask me to marry you all day!” She couldn’t stop grinning, her face was starting to hurt but she didn’t care. “How is that not a big deal!?”

“Because the whole day went to shit!” Catra jumped to her feet, “I planned it all out, but it went to shit! Wake you up with a kiss, but I fall out of bed like a moron! Make you breakfast, and it’s not fit for that stupid horse of yours! Walk in the park, and the whole of fucking Etheria decides to show up!” She rubs her face in despair, “and just when I think the day couldn’t get any shittier, Sparkles decides to steal my idea! Wonderful!”

After letting out a breath, Catra collapsed back on her seat and leaned against Adora, “...today was supposed to be perfect, I messed up...so much, and you deserve something going right...I wanted to give you a perfect day Adora, that’s the least I owe you after...everything I did.”

Adora put the box with the ring aside for a moment, and placed Catra’s face in her hands, “Catra...c’mon, you should know by now you don’t owe me anything,” Catra opened her mouth to protest but Adora stopped her with a kiss on the nose. “You don’t, and we both messed up plenty so there’s no point in sorting out who owes what anyway.” Another protest, this time stopped with a kiss on the forehead. “Also, today may not have been perfect...but it was a day I spent with you, so no matter what I still had a good one.”

Catra let out a scoff, “so cheesy...”, but her cheeks were dusted pink.

“Says the one who planned to propose today.” she grinned as Catra giggled quietly, reaching for the box at her side and handing it back to her love. “Speaking of...”

Catra fumbled with the box for a moment, “...just...just like this?”

“Just like this.” Adora nodded, “just like this, or any other way, would make today perfect.”

Catra looked into Adora’s eyes, took a breath, and stepped from the balcony they were sitting on to kneel nearby, offering the open box and her heart to Adora, “...Adora.” Her voice was quiet, but warm as a spring breeze, “I love you more than anything, I nearly lost you a million times because I was angry, or scared, or selfish...I never want that to happen again, you made me a promise that you would stay with me forever...so now, I want to make you a promise too.”

Catra took the ring out, Adora reaching her hand as the ring was slipped on,

“I promise to always have my heart open to you, I promise to trust you when you say you love me, I promise...I promise to stay, to stay always, so...” Catra swallowed a lump in her throat, “will...will you marry me?”

“Yes.” The answer was swift and sure, tears falling without restraint from her as she smiled and fell in love all over again, “I will, yes.”

She pulled Catra into a hug, and the two kissed passionately under the stars, Catra’s tail wrapping around her leg.

After a while they separated, and Adora laughed, “hey, maybe we can have a double wedding with Bow and Glimmer?”

“Oh hell no.”

“Why not?’

“Because Rainbow will want to have a matching suit with me, and I would rather brush my teeth with the horse’s breakfast hay than wear a pink and purple suit.”

“Oh come on he wouldn’t-wait, what makes you think that you’d be wearing the suit?”

“Oh, I dunno, the metric ton of drool you make every princess prom when you see me?”

“...Touché...”

And so it went like that, the two laughing their joy the the cold and calm night, hand in hand and heart in heart.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Season 5, Episode 13, “The Heart, Part 2,” First Impressions!

I am going to miss this show, I really am.

Well. Here we are. The final episode of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, an almost three decade later reboot of a show I’ve never seen, which in turn was a spin-off of a show I’ve never seen, and yet somehow became one of my favorite shows of all time.

Now, when this show was first announced, there was a lot of pushback. You had the usual murder’s row of so-called anti-SJW troglodytes who like to swoop in on anything that looks like it wasn’t designed with straight white guys in mind (and speaking as a straight white guy, these guys are just. So. Tiresome!), as well as fans of the original who didn’t care for the new character designs, direction, or lack of connection to Masters of the Universe. Which, okay, I get it, and to be honest the little to no He-Man business still strikes me as weird, but come on guys. It’s been almost thirty years! Times have changed, audiences have changed, and the targeted audience of kids’ shows today are very different from what they were in the eighties.

But despite all that nontroversy, She-Ra rose above and established itself as a genuinely great show in it’s own right, becoming both a critical and commercial success. Like, okay, it wasn’t Avatar the Last Airbender or Steven Universe-level big, but it definitely established a real niche for itself and gathered a sizeable fanbase. The excellent writing, incredibly on-point comedic timing, superb voice acting, casual diversity, oodles of complex and likeable characters, tight-plotting, mature handling of difficult topics, and immaculate direction made it out to be an amazing children’s show from a decade that has had no shortage of amazing children’s shows, and expectations were insane for the final season, with the climatic final episode being under incredible scrutiny.

I mean, it makes sense, right? For once, given the huge LGBTQ fanbase the show has, and given how many times the LGBTQ community have been burned at the last second, there is little wonder that they would be wary. And while some shows like the aforementioned Avatar the Last Airbender and Breaking Bad have remained of high quality throughout its run and delivered with an excellent finale (or so I’m told, still working my way through), others like Voltron Legendary Defender and Game of Thrones have become notorious for shitting the bed in their latter halves, and other shows like Steven Universe have had more mixed receptions. So how would She-Ra turn out? Would it end up flopping at the end, or would it stick the landing and enter the pantheon of shows that actually completed their entire story arcs and are fondly remembered?

Yes. Yes, it did.

The final season was spectacular. It started off all right, but from the third episode on immediately turned into pure brilliance, one that seemed to constantly top itself with wonderful character development, emotional payoffs, scenes of gripping tension, ballsy writing, and fantastic action. And any finale that makes me cry gets a thumb’s up from me.

Now, obviously I have a lot of gushing to do, but before it do, I should point out that I don’t think the finale is 100% perfect. There are things that kind of bugged me, and a few others that I felt really could have done better. Of course none of them were deal breakers, only little flaws that I feel could have stood to either have had more focus or different execution. And I might as well get the negative things out of the way.

And for me, the biggest problem is Shadow Weaver’s exit.

And to be clear, I don’t have a problem whatsoever with Shadow Weaver dying. I wanted her to die. I’m glad she died. Nor do I have a problem for her dying to save the two girls she’s spent two decades abusing. And nor do I have a problem with them mourning her death, given that they never actually forgave her, and it only made sense that they would have complicated feelings toward her. All of those are fine!

What I have a problem with is how that moment was framed and directed. It was framed like a heroic sacrifice, from the dramatic final stand moment to Shadow Weaver being suddenly acting selfless to her telling Catra how proud she was of her and finally showing her face.

Everything about that moment was exceptionally well done, yes, but the problem I have is that it doesn’t feel earned. That’s the sort of end you give a morally complex character that has been struggling with their negative qualities throughout a long character arc. And I’m sorry, but while Shadow Weaver is a pretty great and complicated character in her own right, she as never even tried to redeem herself until that moment. With Catra, we still saw how much her actions haunted and tormented her, even when she was at her worst. We saw her wrestling with her ingrained toxic behaviors and her conscience, so that when she finally makes the decision to do something right and, as far as she knew, sacrificed her life to rescue Glimmer and save Adora, it felt all kinds of earned!

But even after defecting to the Princess Rebellion, Shadow Weaver showed no signs of wanting to change. She showed no signs of regretting her mistreatment of Adora and Catra, and still continued to demean, undercut, and gaslight them whenever she was with them, and whenever she was called out on it, she would just brush it off and/or roll her eyes. Even when she was “helping” and “praising” her golden child Adora, she still continued to try to twist her head and mold her into what she wanted Adora would be. And her treatment of Catra didn’t change at all.

So I’m sorry, but that moment just didn’t work for me. Yes, I know Noelle has said that her sacrifice was still selfishly motivated, and I believe it, but it still felt off, especially with her finally telling Catra that she was proud of her, when she was AGAIN demeaning her earlier in that same episode! It carries the unintentional implication that Catra needed Shadow Weaver’s validation in order to move on. I honestly would have preferred that she never got it but realized that she didn’t need it to begin with. And that “You’re welcome,” which is incredibly condescending, was framed as a badass final line. There’s a disconnect between her character arc and its payoff that feels off. I wish something had been handled differently.

The second issue I had was just how rushed a lot of the character payoffs felt at the end. Yes, I know Noelle said that she doesn’t want to do an epilogue and would like us to decide for ourselves how things turned out, and that’s fine. But one day later wouldn’t hurt. Wrong Hordak was shown a couple times cowering next to Swift Wind in group shots and then straight up disappeared. And given their complicated history together, Scorpia and Catra deserved so much more than just a hi and a hug. Chipped Micah was given more time to harm and demean Glimmer than real Micah was given to love her. The Entrapdak thing got more focus and despite what I said about Hordak needing to either die or lose his memories, I’m not too upset that he didn’t do either, but instead simply broke free and got a happy ending, and Mermista’s line of, “So, are we like okay with this?” was great, but it feels like there should have been more. And I know they never had their own character arc and did all they needed to do last season, but if you’re going to bring Double Trouble back, then give us more than just one episode and a two-second cameo at the end.

Like, just give us some kind of montage of the rebuilding stage. Show us Wrong Hordak leading his scared and confused brothers in becoming individuals. Have him meet the real Hordak and show us how they would respond to one another! Give us a proper Catra/Scorpia reconciliation! Do more with Double Trouble or don’t bring them back at all. Hell, pair them up with Wrong Hordak partway through the season so they could bounce off each other, because that would be comedy GOLD! And while I’m glad that we at least got to see Lonnie, Kyle, and Rogelio (and they adopted Imp!), it sucks that that was their only scene this season, and it didn’t even have any lines. I’m not so upset about Huntara, because I know her voice actress is hard to get ahold of, so I’m okay with her just getting a wordless scene, but the others kind of bug.

I understand that time was a factor, but surely something could have been done.

All right, now I got all those out my system, let the gushing BEGIN!

Catra and Adora. Oh man. Oh man oh man oh man oh man. Now, I know I said that Catra needs to leave in order for her redemption to work, but even though she didn’t and got pretty much forgiven and accepted by everyone she hurt, I’m still very happy with how her redemption arc went down. Because she made the switch early in the season, showed genuine regret for what she did, made real attempts to apologize to those she hurt without expecting forgiveness, was shown wrestling with her bad traits, sometimes falling back into them, sometimes almost succumbing to bad habits, but was also shown finally making the right decisions and rising above them. She was the best-written character in the show with the most complex character arc, and they fucking NAILED the landing.

And that is because of her love of Adora.

Catra and Adora, two white-hot messes of weirdly compatible issues. Catra is so afraid of abandonment that she instinctively pushes those she loves away or runs away herself rather than let them leave her, and Adora only knows how to place others before herself, to be selfless to a fault, take all the blame for everything, and not let herself be the one who’s loved and protected. The two needed each other in order to overcome their issues, to put aside the damage Shadow Weaver instilled in them.

And they finally did.

Catra came back for Adora. She stayed by her side, refused to leave, and refused to let Adora give up. And Adora rose above her feelings of failure, allowed herself to be loved by another, and became whole.

And then we got it. We finally got the moment we’ve all been waiting for, all been praying for, all wanted so goddamned desperately.

We got the Big Goddamn Kiss.

The love each other. They’re lovers. They’re soulmates. After everything, how could they be anything else? It’s pure, 100% romantic love, a full, no ambiguity friends-to-rivals-to-enemies-to-allies-to-lovers storyline. Not subtext, no reading between the lines. It’s real, it’s canon, it’s between the two main leaders, and it happened right on the screen and saved the goddamned world.

Catra finally reached out to someone and showed love, and Adora finally allowed herself to be brought up and loved. And it’s that love that overcame Horde Prime’s virus and destroyed the Heart of Etheria. It’s that love that freed the magic, released She-Ra, and allowed her to vanquish Horde Prime once and for all.

And hey, two girls kissing, turning into a rainbow, and annihilating the influence of a controlling religious cult and the symbol of exploitative colonizers? Hmmm, subtle!

I love it.

Look, after everyone talking about how much the finale made them cry, and after already sobbing my eyes out when Angella sacrificed herself in season 3, I was worried that I wouldn’t feel the same, that everything had already been spoiled for me so it wouldn’t have the same emotional impact. Hell, the kiss itself had been spoiled for me! So if I knew it was coming, how could it affect me like it did others.

I was wrong. I was so wrong. When Catra screamed at Adora that she loved her and always had, the tears came gushing out. And when they finally did kiss, it made me happier than I had been for a long time. It was such a beautiful moment, and it was so wonderful to see all the magic unleashed, turning Etheria back into the paradise it was meant to be, and the Spire into a giant floating sprig of broccoli!

The Horde was finally defeat, and Horde Prime ripped out of his Wi-Fi network and destroyed once and for all. He will not rise again. His corrupted vision of purity is finally eradicated once and for all, and the galaxy is free again.

It was wonderful.

Other moments I want to highlight! Beginning with Bow!

Oh Bow. I haven’t talked as much about you as I did at the start of the show, but you really are wonderful. After similar unpowered male goofball sidekicks like Xander and Sokka being big balls of toxic masculinity and ingrained misogyny caused by insecurities that they had to overcome, we get an unpowered male goofball sidekick who is a shining example of positive masculinity, someone who knows who he is and is comfortable with it, someone who more than holds his own in battle, constantly makes himself useful, and stands proud with his superpowered friends. And even then, he still feels like real person, one that gets frustrated, feels down, and gets angry at both himself and his friends, but still continues on, because he’s a soldier and that’s what he does.

So it was wonderful that he got the Rise Up and Fight speech, because he deserved it, and oh it felt so good, seeing all those instances of people throwing off Horde Prime’s control while his words were playing. Bow really is wonderful.

And Hordak! Look, I know what I said about wanting more from his ending, but my God, that moment when he threw off Horde Prime’s control and shot Horde Prime in the back to save Entrapta and reclaim his identity was so! Fucking! Cool! I was cheering in my car when that happened! So good!

And hey, give it up for Glimmer for not listening to Chipped Micah and refusing to back down. She overcame a brilliant sorcerer wielding dark magic through the power of sheer stubbornness! Chef kiss, beautiful!

Though I really do think she got most of her stubbornness from her mom. Miss yah, Angie.

And Scorpia and Perfuma? Why, I think I like that quite a lot! Why yes, give Perfuma a big, strong girlfriend with a huge heart! Give Scorpia tiny, cute hippie girlfriend who will take no shit from anyone. Yes, I like this very much.

So...yeah. This really was wonderful. The world is saved, the Best Friend Squad is about to go on a space romp, and it feels good. And from there? Well, Noelle told us to come with that ourselves, so yeah, I’m sure Etheria was able to fully rebuild following the Horde’s destruction. I’m sure that Wrong Hordak became some kind of benevolent leader to his lost brothers and helped them come to grips with their individuality. I’m sure that Scorpia rebuilt the Scorpion Kingdom from the Fright Zone’s ruins and made it a haven to the lost Horde soldiers. I’m sure that Sea Hawk and Mermista burned down a boat together. I’m sure that Glimmer and Bow were married and became king and queen of Brightmoon and had a long and loving reign with lots of babies. I’m sure that Entrapta was given all the discarded Horde and First Ones tech to crack and find good uses for and remained as happy as a clam, especially considering the Hordak harem she’s built. I’m sure that Adora and Catra continued to build each other up, helped and supported one another to keep themselves from falling into bad habits, and Melog was always there as a faithful therapy magi-cat. I’m sure that Perfuma helped Catra along with meditative exercises and Catra never had the heart to tell her that she was just napping. I’m sure that Frosta grew up to be a strong and powerful queen who also founded her own iceball league. I’m sure that everyone started going to Netossa and Spinnerella’s game nights and just decided to put up with Netossa when she got like...that, because at that point she deserved to. I’m sure that Swift Wind finally did emancipate the horses and taught them to form their own weird society, but still made time to visit Madam Razz. I’m sure that Kyle and Rogelio became proud adopted fathers of little Imp, and one day while chilling at the local pub, Lonnie caught the eye of a big, strong purple woman.

I’m sure they were all very happy from there on.

I am going to miss this show. It was a wonderful experience, one that’s given me so much. It made me laugh,it made me cry, it made me cheer, it made me shiver, it made me bite my nails, but most of all, it made me happy.

So thank you Noelle and Molly. Thank you Chuck and Mary Elizabeth. Thank you Sunna and Aaliyah. Thank you Aimee, AJ, Karen, Marcus, Keston, Reshma, Lorraine, Christine, Adam, Genesis, Vella, Merit, Gina, and Jordan. Thank you to all the writers, animators, and directors. The Good, The Bad, and the Dirty: Spop season 5

I’ve stopped screaming, and I took the time to rewatch season 5 with my little brother. So, here are my thoughts:

The Good

Horde Prime - The cult™ : I really dig the aesthetics, that combo of religious fanatics + fascism hit good. The crew did a good job at portraying Horde Prime as the ultimate villain of the show. He was engaging to watch and his ideology was pretty clear. The way they played with the hive mind concept was really fun, and it was Horde Prime’s biggest strength. He was also a very good manipulator, successfully playing with Glimmer and Adora. He was unsuccessful with Catra because she had already hit her lowest point.

Entrapta: honestly, she was the most hilarious character this season. Not only was she engaging to watch and listen to, I felt really connected to her this season. The fight with Mermista hit really good and it hurt, but you could see her trying her best. I love how open she is and how accepting of everyone and everything. I’m glad we got to see so much of her this season.

Scorpia: baby, she only deserves good things in life. When she got mind control, you could see how fucking powerful she is, but luckily for us, we got to see her shine independently before that. Her interactions with Swift Wind, Perfuma, and Double Trouble made her shine. She’s smart, talented, and without an evil bone in her body. I’m happy she can move on from Catra and find love and friendship. (I hope she reconnects with Lonnie, Rogelio and Kyle in the future too)

Mermista: babe, you were always mood. She has been consistently funny, her get ups and plans are so entertaining to watch, but also: her relationship with Sea Hawk is great! They are definitely made for each other. I’m sad she was mine controlled for the other half of the season, but I’m happy we got to see a lot of her before. (Also she burned someone’s ship OMG GANGSTER SUIT)

Sea Hawk: happy to see him back. He was funny as always, and I’m happy he got his moment with Mermista at the end.

Perfuma: “ADORA, WHAT DO YOU HAVE THERE?” “A TANK” “NO!” Her relationship with Scorpia is so good! I wish we could’ve seen more.

Netossa: I was one of those who was sad to know the 2 canon lesbians of the show were just background characters. I am so incredibly happy to see her shine this season! SHE SAID MY WIFE. She is the queen of the roasts and I stan.

Spinnerella: Dude, I didn’t know you were this powerful what the fuck. Also, your wife is super cute and she draws like Noelle.

Emotional Support Cat: Bro, I love Melog’s design. I think it was a really clever way to have Catra express her feelings and process them out loud for the audience by giving Catra a supernatural cat.

New She-ra design: I see the subtle reference to Bow, Glimmer and Catra in the design. Honestly, Adora looks 100% more badass.

Not Hordak: I really wish he had picked a name from himself. Aside from Entrapta, this might be the other hilarious character of the season. He goes through his individualization process in a healthier way than Hordak and showcases that the clones can be different from Horde Prime and rehabilitated. I wonder how he will feel about Hordak? But we got no epilogue so idk I guess.

Darla: I can’t believe they named the ship, but I love it.

The Best Friends Squad: I swear to god, when Bow, then Glimmer and then Catra interrupted Adora’s train of thought, I knew we were going to have a great dynamic. The way their characters play of each other is hilarious. Bow, who usually has the only braincell, is cautious and a total dad; Adora is the dumb jock with the heart of gold that gets herself into trouble; Glimmer is the chaotic enchantress with no patience; and finally Catra who’s got all her walls up, but gets shit done. I want a show of them together going on misions and almost dying in the process, thank you.

Catra Redemption: You wanted it, and here you have it! I was cheering for Catra this whole season while proclaiming I’d die for her (which I had only reserved for Scopia previously). Though things may be a little rushed, Catra takes her time to process things, and goes back and forth a couple of times. She deflects, lies, and runs away, but in the end she opens up and rushes back.

In general, the season was packed with content. I was never bored through any episodes and I honestly laughed outloud while watching it alone and later with my brother. There were moments when we paused the episode to discuss what had just happened or to process new information. This makes me feel even more weird about the bland season 2/3 division.

The Bad

Okay so, let me make this clear: I will never attack a ship or anyone who supports it. In this blog we multiship like adults and respect other people’s OTPs.

That being said, while this season was long and packed with content, it also felt rushed when it came to the relationships of the main cast

Glimmer - Catra: The prison episodes had barely any interactions between both of them. I wish they’ve had had more time to talk and to connect. There were Glitra moments that make me feel happy, and my brother was for a moment convinced that they could be canon. They are foils of each other after season 4. The conversation they had, where they realize they had a lot of things in common could’ve been a catalyst for both of them to grow and heal. However, Catra has her change of heart really soon and saves Glimmer, which prevents any deep interactions between them in the future. Aside from the jokes, Catra must be with Adora, and Glimmer must be with Bow, so everything else gets dropped.

Glimmer - Adora: The conflict between them after Angela’s “death” was one of the main plot points of last season. When they reunite again, their issues are solved in a couple of minutes and then brushed off. They really don’t have big interactions after that, which feels completely OOC and empty.

Glimmer - Bow: I wasn’t the only one who felt the sharp turn of their relationship. In previous seasons, it was really platonic, but as soon as they see each other again you know they are going to end up together. The camera zoomed on them, Bow was always holding her protectively, the way they looked at each other change. Since Glimmer is not allowed to have intimate moments with anyone else, it kinda dulls everything up. Don’t get me wrong, I love some best friends to lovers, but in this case it felt rushed for me. If I pinpoint the moment things turned romantic for them, it’s the first time they interact in person this season. It didn’t feel organic (contrast with a ship like Korrasami, where you can point at the moment Asami realized she had feelings for Korra, and then later when Korra’s attitude towards Asami changes after the time skip).

Adora - Catra: Honey, we all knew this was going to be end game, and I love the fact that Catra is dealing with her feelings and Adora acknowledges that. However, after the end of season 3, I’d have expected things to progress a little slower. Catra did put some resistance with the chip scene, but even afterwards, what would’ve been better paced with more episodes, was condensed in a few. Don’t get me wrong. I love that Catra redemption, but I’d have loved a better pacing.

BTW for anyone interested: I ship Glitradora, so any of the 3 ships ending up canon were good for me, and I liked Bow/Glimmer, just preferred them as bffs.

There’s a list of characters that barely show up that could’ve had more screentime:

Huntara: barely appears at all. She’s seen fighting, but there are no references to her or a storyline with her.

Lonnie, Rogelio and Kyle: briefly shown. The gay couple of the century have adopted the baby demon and are now the best dads in the desert. Lonnie is their braincell.

Double Trouble: at least they had a scene and lines, but I feel like they could’ve been more involved after they were discovered by Scopria, especially since they escaped with Sea Hawk and Perfuma.

The Star Siblings: idk man, they were part of a whole episode and then faded into the background. It was a glorified cameo for an episode where Glimmer and Bow fight.

Glimmer’s Aunt: sorry but I was asking “where the hell is she?” until she finally showed up late. She barely had any purpose.

The Dirty

Hey, guys, girls, and nonbinary pals, can we sit down and talk about redemptions?

IDK about you, but just because a show is aimed at kids you shouldn’t “redeem” all the villains. This trend bothers me specially when it touches on abuse or totalitarian leaders.

Shadow Weaver was an abuser until the end. She shouldn’t have had a heroic sacrifice, and her “I’m proud of you” line was bitter for me. I’ve said before I was raised in an abusive household and I don’t think it’s healthy to tell children that you can change your abuser or that you can expect them to change without therapy. I’m glad Shadow Weaver died, but I wish her death wasn’t in any way shape or form considered a “redemption”. A heroic act of sacrifice doesn’t erase all the pain she cause and the years of trauma Catra and Adora have had to endure.

Hordak. HEY HEY ETRAPDAK SHIPPERS DON’T COME FOR ME! I was weirded up by the ship until I realized Etrapta is in her late 20s. I’m happy they found each other but I think it’d be better if Hordak had to redeem himself through a life of service to Etheria. He can't erase the horrible things he has done, but with the help of Entrapta and others, he could give back to the community he ruined. Since we don’t have an epilogue, we just see him reuniting with Entrapta at the end and that’s it.

ALSO SOMEONE GIVE MICAH A HAIR TIE. My man, you are not in a hostile island anymore, go rock a dad bun or a dad ponytail!

I’m late to the party, but whatever. After a (ehehe he) few months of thinking about it, i finally watched netflixs “She-Ra and Princesses of Power”.

- Oh. Oh... Oh wow. Just wow. All these jokes and memes about Catra and therapy makes so much sense now. Like, even TOO much. This show have no business in showing all these issues so good, and yet, there they are.

- Scorpia is such a cinnamon roll. But she’s so stressed. She tries to play it cool, but man, her stress level is on some cosmic level. I have no idea how she do not lost it and not murdered anyone. Come on big girl, i’m going to be your best friend and you can hug me as much as you want. <3

- Hey Adora.

- I hope that Shadow Weaver will not pull some betrayal shit right now and will stick with the rebellion against Horde Prime. I don’t need her to be redeemed, she don’t really deserve that and probably don’t even want that. Also, she’s on the good side out of bad motives, so that’s that. But her changing sides again would be just stupid and too predictable. It’s obvious that she will again try some shady magic to “save” the planet, while also at this same time gain more power, but i hope that will blow up in her face. Badly. Buuut. Since king Maika is alive and back at Bright Moon maybe he will have some good influence on her. Strongly doubt that, but its always a possibility.

- Bows voice acting is probably my favorite in the whole show. The comedy timing with his voice, when it’s going a little to high and cracks up? That’s The Good Stuff.

- And i don’t really like Entraptas (not Entrapa, what) voice timbre. This voice actress is very good - like every other on this show tbh - but something about her voice alone annoys me. She also often sound like her nose is stuck? Which is a nope for me.

- Hey Adora.

- Ah, Entrapta, my adorable science baby. How someone so smart can be so dumb at this same time. I know that she’s autism coded, but im not talking about that. She figured out this whole The First Ones tech, this whole connection of magic, princesses and rune stones to the WHOLE planet, but didn’t thought even for a second that maybe activating this machinery could most probably blown everything up. Really? ReaLLY? But maybe that’s just a science people thing, being sooo much into it, that nothing else matters? Idk, i’m a dumbass, i do not get science very much. But when she was like “we need to turn this portal thing off, Hordak will understand” i was like “oh no, oh honey, no, he DEFINITELY will not” and this moment was kinda hilarious. Oh well.

- And they we’re lab partners. _^_

- I don’t really know why, but i like Hordak. He’s that good kind of dumb, angry and nor very well socialized villain. Well, he lived in a place not very well suited for proper socializing. Yeah, that - he got a nice, kinda different backstory. Usually when a character is a clone their big and dark torment is the fact that they’re a clone. But he’s even proud of that? Because the original one is powerful and magnificent Horde Prime, so it’s an honor to be his clone. His problem is that he is a defective clone, unworthy, when he was made for such grande purpose like conquering the galaxy. I can’t even very much blame him for his bending for murder and destroy. Not because he’s sad, but because he was made in a lab to be like that, more or less programmed - murderous, angry and destructive. In cases of characters like that it’s not very much like an explanation, but almost an justification (but hey, that’s me, about fictional people, so chill please (: ). It’s like blaming a not self-consciousness machine for going rouge. Well, Hordak is not a stupid, unaware robot, but idk, there’s no real analogue in real world for a beings like this, so i “choose” to feel like that about fictional characters being made to be put-there-whatever. Also, he’s physically so fragile? It’s hysterical. It feels like the faintest wind would blow at him, and every bone in his body would broke.

- And what i wrote about Hordak i think also about Light Hope. Shes and AI, probably almost at point where she could obtain self-consciousness, but not quite yet there. And she did what she did because she stick to her main program, she really didn’t have a choice. But she had! This one time. Because she is capable of learning and grow beyond her program. I don’t now if younger audience is going to catch that, but i’m happy that AI was showed as it is - just an very advanced AI, and not a mean, bad person. Or maybe she is self-aware and i just didn’t noticed that. Also, her design. <3

- hEy AdOrA.

- I was so ready to like Double Trouble, and eeeh. The only magic here is acting. I do not copy, i perform. I put everYTHING into ROLE! I’m an Artist! ArTiSt! IT’S ART! asdfghjkl just go away with that you pompous prick. Uuuugh, this is just the worst kind of artists. But, i still appreciate how they do not have any sad backstory (yet?), and are there only for money, drama and spreading chaos. At least someone is having fun in all this mess.

- Adora is so gay for big ladies. When all this mess is going to end, she deserve some romantic plot with gentle butch. Give Adora some big woman to love, you cowards!

- One of Bows dad is wearing socks and sandals. That’s it.

- Swift Wind was visiting madame Razz all this time, because shes and old lady living alone in the woods. My heart just melted. <3 Also, i really want to know whats going on with her. Like, no one cares that’s shes probably more than a one whole thousands years old? But it look more like she has some time bending powers, that she do not control? And it messes with her memory and mind? Poor lady. ):

- I had this feeling deep in my guts that The First Ones are going to be revealed as stupid bitches. And hey, they turn a magical planet into a super weapon. Why these ancient civilizations are such ignorant morons?

- I know that relationships between characters are the most important thing in this show, but man, i was so much there for the worldbuilding. The more information they were giving, the more i was like “just tell me what’s going on!!!”. And wow, i’m not disappointed. A++. But tbh, if we put aside all this cute stuff like magic, princesses and shiny, magical stones, this whole shit is pretty terrifying.

- When during daring rescue of Glimmer and Bow in Fright Zone Perfuma admitted that working with Entrapta can be... kinda difficult, and Entrapta - with a smile! - just nodded in agreement. This. This is probably my favorite joke in this whole series.

- Seahawk. Much love. Much joy. Gold of heart, dumb of ass. Yes.

She-Ra Recap (SPOILER ALERT)

ALRIGHT, AFTER 3-4 DAYS OF BINGE-WATCHING, I FINALLY FINISHED IT!!

And I’d like to tell you about every wonderful moment/thing in the show (and why you should watch it, if you didn’t). Right in time to all the hype around the end!

- Glimmer going from that little girl who couldn’t control her powers to a powerful queen and sorceress that can oppose her own father, who was one of the strongest sorcerers of all!! She became unbelievably powerful and honestly? The best character development.

- Entrapta’s character. I knoooow I talk about her a lot, but she is literally the reason I watched the show and I have all the right to continue talking about her. She is a very interesting character. She is a loner, no one has ever been friends with her without her annoying them. Even her own staff don’t like her. When she tried joining the Princesses Alliance, everybody would always tell her how “wrong” she is in their image. That’s why it was so easy to pull her to Horde’s side. She could close in herself again, dedicating herself to First One’s tech. And suddenly, she found people who didn’t judge her for who she is. Especially Hordak. He didn’t care how “wrong” she is, he wasn’t the best himself and he admits it throughout the show. He saw that she could be a good friend if you give her a chance. And he did. And I fucking love the Lab Partners.

- The fact that no one, even the villains/antagonists cares about ones personality. Especially sexual orientation. Heck, Horde Prime used love in his privilege and that was the most normal thing. No one gets surprised at Bow’s dads, no one gets surprised or uncomfortable with Netossa and Spinnerella being wives and no one CERTAINLY doesn’t get uncomfortable with Catra and Adora. Love is one of the most important topics in She-Ra, although not directly. We are shown that love can come in different forms, friendship (Bow, Glimmer, Adora and Catra), teamwork/support (literally almost anyone, but I will go with Lenny, Rogelio and Kyle, because they got a nice character development too) and relationships of course. And no one will question who’s your partner in crime! Hordak - one of the main villains- and Entrapta - an outsider princess? Great team, friends, lovers, think as you wish. Glimmer and Shadow Weaver? Heck yeah, teacher and student (also, imho, Shadow Weaver deserves the world), and Perfuma with Scorpia, supporting each other through every step. Love love love!!!! Only love can win against evil! (Love and some hardcore weaponry)

- Can we please bring up Swift Wind? The best loyal steed a hero can have. Honestly, I didn’t like him and the fact that he talked made me uncomfortable at first. But he is such a funny character! And I think he is a great supporter to She-Ra. I love him.

- Every ship you have is canon! Like, literally, no matter who you ship, they totally have some kind of a bond and there is no way they couldn’t be a couple. But I won’t let you ship Kyle with anyone except for Rogelio, I am sorry, I don’t make the rules.

- Everything characters do has a meaning to the lore. Every their action influences the future. And this is sooo cool! It lets you theorize a lot, you get engaged a lot more, because you know that character’s decision will have consequences. Mostly to their own character which is the next thing.

- Mentality. We can see how actions influence the characters. The fight between Adora and Glimmer specifically. They couldn’t trust one another at some point, which influenced the way they handled things. Also, Catra sending Entrapta to Beast Island, allowing a portal to open which led to... khem, some bad things (Season 4. I don’t like Season 4. It’s all wrong without Angella). We can see Adora, always judging herself because everything depends on her. That’s a realistic behavior for a hero, because you feel that everyone blames the strongest one if the team loses. We can see Catra having issues with herself after she pushes Scorpia away, realizing how much of a bad friend she is. And so on!

- WRONG HORDAK. Ok, I was watching She-Ra with @captainleemon and he disliked Wrong Hordak, but COME ON. He is a BABY! He is a literal face of “giving a second chance”. He was such a relief to watch! While Season 5 was all intense and serious, Wrong Hordak was there being a complete sweetheart and I thank Heavens for blessing us with him.

- I talked about it already, but D E S I G N!!! In the original show, every woman character was overly sexualized. Men too, of course. You can’t be a hero if you’re not buff and sexy!

Look at Bow!!! Yes, he lost his cool mustache, but he became realistic!!! You don’t need to be buff to be strong! And he is SUPER STRONG!

Also, look at ENTRAPTA!!! Yes yes, that’s her! Imagine remake Entrapta wearing that sexy clothes, Hordak would lose it XD. I think their new costumes fit their personalities and work better now. I don’t think flying around on your hair and working in front of a computer is as comfortable in a dress as in a jumpsuit.

- Everybody deciding it’s time to confess their love to one another in the end, because hey, we will probably die, why not? First Glimmer to Bow, then Sea Hawk to Mermista (although he did it a lot before), Hordak kinda admitting he is soft for Entrapta. And Catra like “well, if everybody does that, I might as well follow the majority”. Can’t believe they invented love.

- The Best Friend Squad interrupting Huntara from flirting with a woman in a bar. That’s all, that’s the thing.

- Micah being a complete dork, when young and when old.

woah, that’s a lot. BUT WE’RE NOT DONE YET!!!!

- My favorite is probably the fact that they mixed magic with technologies which is my all time favorite thing!!! The planet is a weapon??? First Ones were making technologies using magic??? LIGHT HOPE?? My gosh, it gives you so much possibilities! And also an excuse to do whatever you want with the tech and not explain it scientifically , it will all work, because it has something to do with magic. You have to explain how tech works, but you don’t have to explain magic ;))

- This show made me SO EMOTIONAL. Every character has a meaning and I am happy they didn’t kill or hurt characters without a purpose. I am talking Angella’s death. I’m still not over it. I was hoping she’ll come back in the end, but ugh.... well, you have to learn how to move on.

- ksjthrtliuhriuy THE INTRO AND HOW IT WAS CHANGING DEPENDING ON WHAT WAS HAPPENING!!! Scratch that, THE INTRO ITSELF!!! Imma do a fucking cover, you can’t stop me, it’s one of the best intros I’ve heard in a while. It can fight Gravity Falls and Steven Universe.

- Sea Hawk’s shanties. Period.

Decided to rewatch the whole series after seeing the finale, here's my thoughts as they come along part 1

Razz tells Adora not to look for others to tell her what to do and asks her what she thinks. Adora decides she must fight the Horde. It's poetic that Adora gets so hung up on destiny and fulfilling her goal, when the final message she needed to learn was said in the third episode. Razz is the wisest of us all.

Angella repeats what she heard in the legends of She-Ra, notably that she is meant to "bring balance to Etheria". From Angella's perspective this seems like a good thing, but it's so much more sinister knowing that basically means "to turn the death star on".

Catra was pissed at Adora, but seemed willing to leave the Horde until Hordak elects her as Force Captain. This is the start of her conclusion that Adora was only holding her back, and so the decent of her madness. That little smirk kills me, because that face will shed a lot of tears from this point on.

Season 5 showed us what Adora's She-Ra looks like, without the First One's influence. It might be a bit blasphemous, but I think that reveal would have worked better if this early season She-Ra was the mini-skirt, cleavage design of the 80s. Have a bit of symbolism about societal beauty standards. Love the muscles though that part is perfect.

The first time Catra and Adora meet back up after their falling out is a little unremarkable, the wounds are still fresh and they're still angry at each other but I think both still don't understand how big this schism between them will be.

I just realized Entrapta's castle has a picture of a Tyrannosaurus rex with a unicorn horn and Pegasus wings. Is that what Mara's dragon was!? 😂

God I love Entrapta, even when I first watched this I was excited to see the purple Hatsune Miku in the intro. She always cared about people since the beginning, she just doesn't understand politics.

Castaspella and Angella were shipping Glimbow from the start lol.

The show gives us a full view of how Shadow Weaver's abuse affected Adora. Being constantly pressured to be the best and strongest at the threat of Catra's health has left Adora a jittering wreck. Call me sadistic, but I love that it wasn't resolved in this episode. Adora wins the battle against SW today, but all the way up to the series finale we see SW's dirty fingers clawing away at her conscious. It takes more than 20 minutes to escape a life of manipulation.

Princess Prom! This is when the show goes from a 7 to a 10. Not only the prom being a fun venue, but this is where Catra begins to get some agency. This is the first time she really feels like a main character, which is great because I love her more than anything. Also the first time we see Double Trouble and the Star sisters, which I guess are different from the Star Siblings in season 5? A bit of a continuity error.

Aww, Glimmer is jealous. I can relate to her fears of being pushed out, but the fact that she's pretty madly in love with him adds a whole new layer. Bow is right but he's being a bit insensitive here.

Let's just take a moment to appreciate how far we've come. Remember when this was the gayest thing in the show?

It's fun watching the princess alliance so early in their friendships, they obviously care enough to go with Adora on this mission to save Glimmer, but I love how annoyed and distracted they get with each other.

This episode is also really big for Catra, realizing she will never get Shadow Weaver's approval, that longing look at Adora, "this is not because I like you".

The Beacon is sandwiched between two great episodes that make it feel like filler, but a lot actually happens. We see more of Adora's insecurities, especially how she starts to take it out on herself when she runs into a problem out of her control. We got the formation of the super pal trio, a short lived group with an amazing dynamic. And we also have a huge moment with Angella that basically defines her entire character.

Entrapta's insecurities are revealed. She wants friends, she loves people, but they're complicated and hard and always seem to leave her. It's heartbreaking and something that comes to a head on Beast Island.

I love this scene with Catra and Shadow Weaver. It's clear she still loves her evil mom, and we see how SW has abandoned the idea of Adora for now and is now beginning to manipulate Catra. We also see another Catradora parallel, both of them tell straight to SW face that she has no power over them anymore, something we continue to see is not true.

Promise! 18 months later and it's still my favorite episode of the show. I like how it starts off with the anger they've been feeling up until now, but through the mind melting manipulation by skynet Light Hope, it's multiplied a thousand fold. Before this Catra was pissed at her friend, now Catra wants to murder the person she thinks destroyed her life. After this Catra isn't a cute tsundere, she's completely homicidal. She still loves Adora obviously, but Light Hope has corrupted that love into the most vitriol hate on the planet. It's wild to think they both love each other so much, and yet the abuse that have scarred them prevents that love from breaking free. This is the true moment where the show starts, this is where it became the best cartoon I have ever seen.

Also this is the only time since the first episode and Catra's redemption in season 5 where their chemistry is in full play. They just love each other so much, god I'm fucking tearing up again.

An important thing people forget about the Catradora dynamic is Catra's inferiority complex. She has been told since the day she was born that she is worthless, below Adora in every way. She loves and looks up to Adora, but her existing in Adora's shadow blackens that love. Which is why her joining the rebellion isn't a good ending for her. She needed time on her own, away from Adora, to carve out her own identity. It was her struggles as Force Captain that finally pushed her to start doing good, that realization that she is unhappy in that role. If she had left with Adora in episode 1, she would still be bitter and cruel and toxic, because she'd still be standing behind Adora.

Shadow Weaver's abuse goes both ways, as now Adora feels like she needs to protect Catra like a helpless kitten. That dynamic was not healthy, and it would not have lasted. Catradora can only exist now because they both accept each other as equals.

That final "you promise?", probably the most important words in the show. I've seen this episode a dozen times, but after seeing the finale the tears are running down my face again. Adora was the light of Catra's light, nothing mattered as long as Adora was there with her. She loved her so much. The Fright Zone, Shadow Weaver, her own insecurities, they all impacted Catra. But in that moment, them cuddling on their bunk, it didn't matter. Little did she know Adora loved her back just as much. Fuck I'm crying again.

Catra took that memory, tainted by Light Hope, and saw Adora as a monster. Someone who manipulated her like everyone else and abandoned her at the first opportunity. Someone who broke her most important promise, someone who broke her heart. Catra is probably the best written character in fiction, no I am not exaggerating.

It's a hard follow up after that episode, but the amazing juxtaposition of Entrapta and Light Hope telling the same story with different information is bone chilling and goosebumps giving.

Knowing the whole story of Mara, Light Hope's speeches are terrifying. Her manipulation makes Shadow Weaver look soft. Luckily we have an Alicorn to help, like all other abuse in the show it isn't over in a single dialog exchange, but Swift Wind is speaking the truths Adora needs to hear. The thing about Adora though is one of her main character flaws, she gives in to the doubt her abusers seed her. Her friends constantly tell her she has worth and deserves love, but she has it in her head that she must sacrifice herself for the greater good. That's another reason why Catradora works in the end, Catra helps bring out the selfishness she needs.

Battle of Brightmoon isn't a great finale, my time in the MLP fandom has soured me on "then all the friends came together and shot the villain with a rainbow" conclusion. Luckily, the show would knock the next three out of the park.

Catra starting the new season strong, I love the juxtaposition of the horde soldiers fearing her while the super pal trio doesn't. I love that little smirk, she thinks it's the first she wants yet we all know it's the later.

Frosta got a character change, I understand what they're doing where the other princesses are bringing her out of her shell, but it all happened off-screen so she just seems out of character. The little moment with her and Glimmer is great, and a little bit of forshadowing for Glimmer's queenly role.

Every Shadow Weaver and Catra interaction is fantastic, I love how SW gets so easily under her skin and how Catra pretends to brush it off. Those black tenticles still have a hold on the Kitty's heart.

Ties that Bind is a fantastic episode, especially seeing Catra's interactions with Bow and Glimmer. I love how this contrasts with the season 5 episode A shot in the Dark, here Catra is bullying the best friend squad with malice while the later has Glimmer and Bow playfully making fun of her with love.

Glimmer's actions here are also great forshadowing for her role as queen, especially how desperate she is to destroy the horde and how it affects her morals. Makes her decision to use the heart in season 4 very believable.

I love how Adora keeps referencing ghost stories she heard as a kid. I love the idea of her and Catra under the covers telling scary stories to each other until they'd both end up cuddling while insisting they aren't scared.

Entrapdak! Entrapta's love of science, complete lack of fear, and unending kindness can turn even a dictator cute. They have fantastic chemistry.

I love this little moment with Catra, Shadow Weaver correctly assumes that she's being pushed out and left behind by Hordak, and sure enough she finds Entrapta standing next to him in the lab she was almost killed just for stepping in. Her fears are repeating.

Ah! Goosebumps! The show is slowly moving to be more and more Sci-Fi, and that little shot of Mara's crashed ship with the fantastic music is just a hint to what's to come.

Roll With It is an absolutely adorable low stakes slice of life episode that shows how fun these characters are even when they aren't fighting a war. It's probably the funniest episode in the series, the 80s She-Ra segment is my favorite. There's also the wonderful moment of Adora's breakdown, the pressures of being the world's savior takes a toll on her.

White Out! One of my favorite episodes. The mostly self contained story, the new setting and outfits, great Super Pal Trio bonding, Scorpia being a lesbian, Sea Hawk, and the only time we see the corrupted She-Ra. It's a fantastic microcosm of the show itself, and it's really funny. The Scorpatra stuff is a bit sad knowing how it ends, but it is nice seeing how Scorpia can have a crush while still realizing the toxicity of her relationship later on.

Shadow Weaver's backstory and the biggest window into her head. She believes what she is doing is right, but her methods are full on psychotic, and she was power hungry from the start. I love her so much, she's so deliciously evil. The Eldritch horror that is the spell of obtainment is a treat, and SW's arrival at the Fright Zone is beautifully terrifying. This episode also has the best scenes with her and Catra, it's devastating to watch Catra continue to pine for SW's approval and how, after all this time, SW still only sees her as a tool.

Shadow Weaver is one of my favorite characters, literally every scene with her a amazing. "I can tell by how your voice turns shrill when you scream" what a bitch I love her. I also really like how you can tell Catra and Adora still love her, even after all this abuse. She's a monster, but she's also a mom, and both of those identities conflict in their heads.

Shadow Weaver's and Light Hope's reveal of Adora's origin is goosebumps giving. The revelation that there is a universe beyond Despondos is amazing, but I especially love Light Hope continuing to withhold information and effectively lie to Adora. Razz, Swift Wind, Angella, Catra, they all tell her to make her own decisions but this moment with Light Hope where she is told she doesn't have a choice is what Adora latches on to.

There's also the deal with Hordak, when Light Hope tells the story, she paints it as Hordak ripping the poor baby away from her family. We later learn that's wrong, Hordak saves Adora, he finds a tiny baby and even as a heartless destroyer he knows he can't leave her out there to die. He steals her away, but he does so from Light Hope, the original kidnapper. If Adora was raised by Light Hope, she probably would have fired the heart without question. The Horde was not a good environment to grow up in, but it was an important part in making her the hero the universe needed.

I love Hordak's monologue, the art style and music are fantastic and the whole thing is terrifying. To imagine the big bad horde of the show is just a tiny sliver of what is out there. It also shows Hordak's motivations, which don't excuse his actions but do explain them. This show does a fantastic job at letting us sympathize with the evil-doers, and that has only grown now that Wrong Hordak has shown what it's like to be disconnected from the hive-mind. Bonus points for explaining Imp's origin and showing how Entrapta is exactly the person that he needs right now.

Catra is being embarrassingly edgy here, but it is funny that she's talking about "lost it all" and she seems to think this is rock bottom, oh girl you are in for a ride awakening with how much farther you can fall.

Promise plays again as Adora has another break down. We finally see Mara, and as with everything to do with the First Ones it is chilling. I love this slowly unraveling storyline of Light Hope's true intentions. At this point it is clear she is not to be fully trusted, but we have yet to see how truly sinister her intentions are.

Catra, again, being one of the best characters ever written. She finds a minimum amount of happiness in the wastes, and immediately it all comes crashing down when her trauma resurfaces. That scene of the anger taking over is a masterpiece. I have said a million times that she'd never be truly happy in the wastes, and the later seasons confirm it, but it is heartbreaking to see how even the slightest hint of a smile is ripped off her face.

The Glimmer Angella arguments hurt, they're both right but it's sad to see them fight and how Angella takes Glimmer's advice while Glimmer doubles down on her faults.

Shadow Weaver back on her bullshit, manipulating teenagers to give her power. Noelle mentioned how she truly believes she's on the good side, and obviously she doesn't want the Horde to win, but you can't deny she has some selfish motivations behind recruiting Glimmer. That lust for power remains with her until the very end.

We see Adora getting to Entrapta here, people I think really didn't get their impressions of her right. Entrapta loves tech and science, and sometimes it blinds her, but she isn't immoral, she does care about the safety of her friends.

"You made me this way, and you get to be the good guy" "you couldn't wait to get away from here, from me. But you came back for Adora". You can see how SW's betrayal not only reaffirmed Catra's fears, but was probably just as much a force behind her decent into madness as Adora was.

There's also something beautiful about the symbolism of Shadow Weaver using her new victim like a battery to crush her old.

And Catra betrays Entrapta and Scorpia, this is officially the worst she gets, at this point her hatred of Adora is taking over her. We see more of it in season 4, but her desire to hurt Adora as much as Adora has hurt her causes her to crack like an egg. Scorpia's face says it all.

I love getting to see Catra and Adora in their element, completely in love with each other. None of the complexity of the world at large, just them two together. Even Shadow Weaver's approval of Catra, this is her dream world.

It's funny how Scorpia's first instinct upon seeing Catra is to hug her while her first reaction to Adora is to insult her. She has terrible judgement of character lol

Everyone's insistence that it's "perfect", watching the world shift and fall apart, the confusion, the panic, the show masterfully shows Adora's emotions in this mind-melding episode.

"Soon the two of us will be ruling Etheria together just like we always planned" "Is that what you really want, to rule the world?" "I mean, yeah, obviously. Isn't that what you want too?" God this little moment is perfect, it shows how much they're wavelengths differ. Catra focuses on the "together" while Adora focuses on the "rule the world". Like DT says later, Catra's heart was never truly in it. This thirst for power is just the world's most destructive coping mechanism.

I rewatched Season 1 of She-Ra before Season 5 airs at midnight and so far my reactions have been

E1: Angela my sweet mom I love you, Bow my child you are an angel and I love you, Glimmer baby you are a baby and need protection at all costs. oh yeah... there's a time where Adora and Catra were friends... wow it feels so long ago.

E2: How and why did I forget the moment the BFF squad became friends?! Adora meeting a horse, still precious, and jeez I love my dork jock daughter. i am LOVING this first episode. they’re TRULY the underdogs now. people are hiding with magic. they live in tents. they’ve lost their edge. they’re actually leaning into the horrors of war now

Shadowweaver says OOC stupid things but it doesn’t matter because the princesses shut it down satisfactorily. Adora is weighed down by responsibility in a cool way.

I LOVE THIS WRITING. Catra and Glimmer are THE greatest pair ever. Glimmer is smart enough to poke right through Catra’s defenses - and NOW they’re in the same situation - Glimmer says so - and immediately the prison wall fades away - and they’re both invited for dinner. THAT DELICIOUS WRITING

AU in which after the battle of Bright Moon, Adora takes a badly injured Catra to Madame Razz and regularly, she visits...

Adora looks unhappy.

She looks unhappy a lot recently and Catra doesn’t take as much joy from that as she probably should.

Perhaps it’s the tired air around her, the dark bags beneath her eyes, the almost permanent frown that mars Adora’s face with a dark cloud of exhaustion.

She looks so tired.

Catra watches her bang the snow off her boots and hang her coat up. She watches her pause, take a deep breath and exhale like there’s a weight crushing her ribs, making it hard just to breathe.

Her head hangs for a moment, fingers fisted in her coat.

Then her hands drop and she straightens just like a soldier should, pushing aside everything that’s fighting to push her to her knees.

And she sits in the chair across from Catra, seemingly unaware that the feline has been watching her since the moment her blonde head poked through the door.

She’s looking into flames now and with them dancing over her face, it seems to make the tiredness only more apparent.

She manages a small smile when she looks at Catra though before it morphs into a slightly puzzled look.

Probably because Catra’s staring.

“You okay?” Adora asks, as she always has and always will.

“Are you?” Catra shoots back and Adora blinks then breathes a laugh.

“I’m fine. I’m not the one who tripped onto a magical sword,” She returns but Catra doesn’t rise to the bait and does not let herself be distracted.

“You look like shit, Adora,” She states.

And that’s not strictly true, Adora never looks shit per say, but she does look exceptionally worse than Catra had grown used to seeing her when amongst her Princess posse.

Maybe it’s Catra.

Maybe being around her has done that.

Her stomach twists.

“Oh gee thanks, Catra,” Adora says dryly, an unimpressed look on her face and ordinarily Catra would be laughing at her but she can’t.

Is it me? Did I do this?

Adora’s face softens in the ensuing silence.

“… Catra, what’s wrong?” She questions.

“Is it me?” Catra blurts before she can catch it and Adora frowns.

That damn frown. She hates seeing her frowning.

“Is what you?” Adora questions, confused.

“That’s made you look like this!” Catra hisses, frustration rising and she tosses the book out her lap onto the table next to her, head turning away. “You look like you haven’t slept in days! Is it me?” She demands before looking back and Adora, previously leant forward in the chair, sinks back and all pretence of everything being fine slips away.

She looks small.

“No...” She sighs, staring at the floor, “It’s not… you. Not directly anyway. I’m just...” She falters, pinching the spot between her eyes but Catra sees the gleam of tears she knows Adora won’t shed so easily. But it’s enough to prove how fragile she is, how much this has torn at her.

“Just…?” Catra coaxes and Adora lets her hand drop, her weary gaze finding Catra again.

“Did you really think that anybody would be happy with the fact that I’m technically harbouring the Rebellion’s most wanted?” She says, voice too soft and Catra fights the urge to squirm.

“I… kind of wondered why nobody had come knocking...” She concedes and Adora looks back to the fireplace before leaning over to toss another log on.

“It’s because they don’t know where you are,” She states, “The only people that know you’re here are myself, Madame Razz and Swift Wind of course and he won’t tell if I don’t want him to so… yeah, I… I’m in trouble, Catra… a lot of it.”

She looks a tinge afraid. That alone is enough of an indicator.

“How bad?” Catra asks anyway and Adora takes a deep breath.

“If I wasn’t a princess by technicality, I’d be rotting in jail… forever...” She explains before swallowing hard and Catra feels something tighten in her gut, uncomfortable and nauseating.

“After everything you’ve done for them?” She presses and Adora smiles without joy, meeting her gaze steadily.

“In their eyes, I aided a Horde captain, Hordak’s second in command… it’s treason, Catra, by all rights they could have had me executed.”

Catra winces visibly.

Adora doesn’t point it out.

“But… your Princess Alliance... I thought you were all friends or whatever?” She questions and somehow, Adora’s eyes manage to dim despite the fire dancing in them.

“They are… were… but they’re angry at me right now. I stopped what could have been the end of the war and they’re furious…” She says, gaze turned to picking dirt from beneath her fingernails. “Glimmer, Bow and Angella managed to keep me out a cell but… they won’t speak to me. Well… Bow does but… he’s disappointed and confused so it’s weird.”

“… But you’re She-ra, they couldn’t lock you up if they tried,” Catra points out and Adora offers her another weak smile.

“I’m just Adora without the sword, Catra… and Adora isn’t like She-ra. Adora is...” She trails off, looking down at her hands again as her brow knits. “… scared… and weak… and hurt and mad and completely useless!”

She shouts the last word only to instantly deflate.

Catra stares at her and feels strangely like she’s looking at her for the first time.

Is this tiredness new? Or is it just deeper right now? Has she always been clinging to threads that just now are threatening to snap?

Because how else could Adora think such terrible things about herself if she hasn’t always?

Useless? Weak?… How could Adora think that when she was always the best of them?

Her head is hanging again.

She doesn’t look like a soldier.

She looks like she wants to quit, to pack up, to give up and Adora’s never given up on anything.

“How could you think that?” Catra asks, voice barely above a whisper and Adora tenses like she’d forgotten Catra was there. “Useless? Where the hell does that even come from? You’re like… the best at everything-”

“Then why isn’t it enough?!” Adora cries, head snapping up and she’s shaking, eyes gleaming with unshed tears.

Don’t start crying. I can’t stand to see you cry.

“If I’m the best… why do I always have to do better?! Why does everybody always expect better from me?! I don’t want to be better!” And she’s crumbling but she does not cry. “I want to be happy!”

Catra swallows back a lump in her throat as Adora visibly struggles to reign herself in.

But Catra doesn’t want that. She wants to understand… needs to.

“And you’re not happy?” She coaxes and Adora’s eyes blaze, hot and angry at her.

“I haven’t been happy since I left you, you dumb jerk!” She growls.

And there it is.

Adora slackens, hands curling out of fists and sitting limp in her lap as Catra gapes at her.

“I kept telling you… didn’t I? Did I not… keep saying it?” Adora asks, voice unsteady and watery and so sad.

Suddenly, Catra understands.

You could come with me.

I miss you too.

Please, Catra, I know you’re not a bad person.

“I just… wanted you with me...” Adora adds in a murmur. She curls up in the chair, legs tucking in, hugging herself as she stares at the fire.

She looks so small.

“… If you were unhappy… why did you leave?” Catra asks quietly because she must and Adora meets her eyes, steady and sincere.

“Because it didn’t matter… I just… I had to do the right thing… even if I… even if I didn’t really want to,” She returns and she’s so honest, so open. “… Catra, if I hadn’t gone to that village, met all those innocent people, I’d have taken that sword back to the Horde… but I couldn’t. I couldn’t do that. I just...”

She sighs again.

They’re too young to be this tired.

“I’m the first She-ra in over a millenium, Catra… and that’s so much bigger than Adora,” She says and Catra pauses for a moment, chewing it over.

“Yeah… bigger than us too,” She replies and a bit of her delights in how Adora’s nose wrinkles in clear distaste of the notion even if it’s true.

“Not to me… which is why everything’s...” She hesitates then looks up and Catra expects some PG insult and so is totally unprepared when, “… well, completely fucked.”

She blinks in bewilderment, a small amused smile forming.

“Wow, Adora, didn’t know you had that in you,” She teases and some of the darkness in Adora’s eyes softens as she rolls them.

“It’s been a very trying few weeks, Catra. I think I deserve a pass,” She says and Catra hums, conceding. She watches Adora for a moment and comes to a very important realisation.

Adora was the favourite… but she didn’t want to be.

It didn’t mean she had it easy, it meant that she was pushed harder and further than any of them. Catra had thought it was just her mad work ethic but how often did Adora look like she was genuinely enjoying herself.

When we sparred, her mind supplies.

Adora didn’t smile when sparring with the others, not even when kicking Kyle’s ass.

But she did with Catra. Not all the time but she did when she managed to make her trip or blocked a blow, if Catra did the same like she was proud of her sneakiness, maybe even admired how Catra was the only person who could match her.

Damn it, no wonder Adora has a martyr complex, she’s been pushed so hard she’s forgotten what limits look like.

Fucking Shadow Weaver screwed them both but in entirely different ways.

And yet they both feel like they’re not good enough.

Adora’s giving her a look; soft and kind of adorably curious.

“What are you thinking about?” She asks and Catra isn’t sure how to properly explain her epiphany and she figures she doesn’t really need to.

Instead, she stands, drags her chair over to Adora’s side and after some wordless shuffling between them, she finds a comfy spot with Adora’s arm draped along the back of her chair, her head tucked into her neck.

Then Adora, tentatively at first, starts stroking the base of her ear.

Catra purrs softly and she can envision Adora’s cocky smirk.

Maybe this is all they can have. Maybe this is as good as it’ll ever be.

But she’ll take it. She’ll take it in both hands, dig her claws in deep enough to scar herself and Hordak himself will have tear it from her.

“Us...” Catra whispers.

“Hm?” Adora replies, the sound gentle and sleepy.

“That’s what I’m thinking about...” She breathes, eyes drifting shut. “Us.”

“Me too,” Adora says just as quietly and together, side by side, as they always should be, they drift off into the first peaceful sleep either of them have known in months.
