The later opening for Red Dwarf was really great, but I will always prefer the original. It was so eerie, yet magnificent. It really conveyed the scope of space around the boys, and the size of Red Dwarf itself. Like the Porridge opening, it’s also pretty unconventional for a sitcom.

I really want to waffle on about how “Withnail and I” is a buddy film with no shoehorned in, two-dimensional love interests, forced references to heterosexual attraction, no real significant relationships outside of that of the title characters, and how all this could definitely be point to a queer reading and I love that, but even outside of that it’s very refreshing that it’s a buddy film that focuses on the buddies and does not insert any unnecessary distractions from it, especially not in an effort to convince you that it’s leads are straight, or that they cannot be convincing, interesting, or even human without external romantic relationships.
