I had to go to the grocery store and felt somewhat bad because I looked a bit like a hobo. But I left feeling bomb ass because still looked better than 95% of the people in there. I mean, I guess pajama pants are really a thing huh….

In the Mean Girls Walmart commercial, the new Plastics’ style reflects the original film’s as they act as a trio unified by the color pink. However, I find it interesting how the new girls reflect Gretchen’s style the most.
Here, Amber (left), Gretchen’s daughter, and her friend are wearing plaid, a staple of Gretchen’s preppy look. Since Amber is leading the group and has the most direct connection to Gretchen, it’s likely she adopted this style from her mom and then her friends followed suit.
While Amber’s other friend differs as she doesn’t look as preppy, she reflects Gretchen’s style as her top is greatly reminiscent of Gretchen’s dress in the scene where the Plastics were walking down the hallway.
I think another reason why Gretchen’s style is the most emulated is that hers is a lot more timeless and distinct compared to the other girls in her group. Regina’s style reflected 2000’s trends that showcased her popularity, but could be seen as outdated if worn today. Cady’s style was more of a mish-mash of the other girls, Karen’s was too simple to be emulated, and both of them followed too closely to Regina’s style to be unique. Gretchen’s style stood out because while she followed Regina’s style, she added elements unique to her own interests as seen in her preppy attire and use of patterns. These distinctive features coupled with the structure often found in her outfits are what helped Gretchen’s style be timeless.
Throughout the Walmart commercials, there’s a narrative thread about Gretchen being insecure about her daughter dismissing her ideas, since it harks back old wounds where she would get dismissed by Regina. However, with Amber emulating Gretchen’s style and continuing the Jingle Bell Rock tradition with her friends, it shows that Amber looks up to her mother more than she lets on. Plus, with Amber being the most popular girl in school, other students reflect her style and in turn Gretchen’s too. It’s just interesting to see how Gretchen, the most overlooked of the Plastics, acts as the blueprint for an entire generation’s fashion sense through her daughter, Amber.
Maybe I’m just biased but as an american living in Europe who goes back once or twice a year it always hits me how much more personality Americans tend to dress with when compared to northern/western europeans. Adults tend to dress in solid monotones with sleek lines and teens look like they just stepped out of gen z tik tok with fake American collegiate wear added for spice. Like this isn’t bad necessarily it’s just so blandly on trend that I don’t get a sense of who anybody is or what their personal style is just by looking at them. The sense of relief I felt stepping off the plane in the Denver airport seeing the diversity of styles from full cowboy to crunchy backpacker to athleisure couture to Dude Stuck In 2004 to married butch lesbians is ASTOUNDING.
