#MERMAY2023 #6 - Freedom (inspired by my @loop_sessions 77 submission) ❄️
Last year I made it a point to reclaim holiday joy after some pretty touch-and-go years, and part of that was enjoying all the retro holiday specials, including BBC's "The Snowman". It's my earliest memory of European animation and I always associated it with my time at the French school, and the hauntingly beautiful song stayed with me for decades. The beat I made for the last Loop Sessions of 2022 was made to reflect my reclamation of winter joy and my newfound freedom, so it only made sense to go with the iconic Free Willy pose, swapping the orca with a beluga iceman ☃️

Not-the-Usual Christmas Music, Day 10
So this is going to be me posting not-the-usual Christmas music, from the 20th through the 31st. I’ve wanted to do this for a while, just share songs that don’t generally pop up on the Christmas radio loop. Some are funny, some are poignant, some are religious, some are secular. Just doing something pleasant at the end of the year.
Day 10: Walking in the Air, from The Snowman

Now, any British followers (and Finnish it seems, maybe?), I know what you're thinking - "not the usual? what are you talking about, this is an annual classic!" But I'm American with mostly American followers and in America this brilliant short film has been largely forgotten. Which is a shame.
Story time: last year, when I had a Jehovah's Witness in my kindergarten class, I did a snowman themed winter party at the end of the semester, and played a version of this with the 45 seconds of Father Christmas edited out. The kids were enjoying it, laughing and talking, and then "Walking in the Air" started, and everything just went quiet, all of them watching with their jaws slightly agape. When the movie was finished, they wanted to rewatch it again (along with the snowmen dancing scene). Not enough children in America have had a chance to experience this masterpiece of animation, so consider this me spreading it around.

Already posted this on Bluesky, and I like it so much you get to see too. I don't usually take good photos. That's mostly bc I'm a) too cheap and lazy to bother keeping up with the latest tech, and b) too slow on the draw to catch good shots. I always get entranced by the ephemeral moment, start thinking the kind of weird-ass thoughts that sometimes lead to novels, and then I remember to grab my cellphone ten minutes later. Anyway, this is with a Samsung Galaxy S22, portrait mode. And I got lucky.
