Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla Recs!

Phew, it's been a minute since I've done one of these. Now back with a new design and additional fandom! Keep in mind that this rec list is my personal taste and yours might differ. I managed to read twelve fics despite the year I had and I think twelve fics for twelve months is a good number. (list below the cut)

Crossing the Abyss by @northernxstories - E - Multi - 23,6k

A beautifully written Space AU with polyamorous pairings. The relationships between the characters are just as interesting to read about as the bigger story of their journey. And I don't think I'm biased in the least, just because I made part of the art. This story is a whole treat!

Summary: The Kattegat was a unique vessel, designed to cross the expanse of space known as the Abyss. Once a ship enters the Abyss, the stresses surrounding the vessel increased exponentially and there was no known means of navigation in the starless void. Captain Bjorn Ragnarsson, known as Bjorn Ironside for his ability to survive seemingly impossible battles, has relied often on his brothers, Ivar, Ubbe and Hvitserk, and his sister, Gyda, to crew his ship.

Ivar was determined to defeat the impossible Abyss and has heard of a scholar who has invented a method of navigation that might be able to accomplish the task. Gyda and Ivar came up with a plan to get this information and if necessary, kidnap the scientist. Once on board the ship, the scientist is faced with unexpected challenges and rewards. However, before they can attempt the journey, Gyda must face her past.

October Rust by @bouncehousedemons - T - Ubbe/OFC - 1,9k

Wonderful imagery throughout the whole fic and and a great continuation of Salt of the Earth and Sea, which I also highly recommend to read! Summary: Ubbe assumes his lover has met a grisly demise, until an unexpected reunion with his brother proves otherwise.

polish the blood and the bruise by @underragingwaves - M - Hvitserk - 4,7k

Soldier Hvitserk, veterinarian Ubbe and a kitten. All very strong points to sell this fic, but please, it is so much more! If you like military themed stories, are a sucker for angst and family bonding this fic will hit all the right spots. I love it dearly and I'm sure so will you. It's also a nice crossover with Vikings: Valhalla characters.

Summary: Hvitserk came home from war, or so they tell him. Most days, he begs to differ about whether he ever made it out of the desert.

Reactions of your Kind by @ulfrsmal - E - Ubbe/Hvitserk - 3,1k

A bit of forbidden action in a hot spring and very nice mental images being painted along the way. Kudos to the lovely author!

Summary: Plagued by thoughts and desires he shouldn’t have had, Ubbe retreated to the hot springs outside of Kattegat… and had his bath interrupted by the one person he’d hoped wouldn’t see him so weak.

Sleepy Mornings by @ritual-unions - E - Ubbe/OFC - 7k

This is a story that reads like devouring your favorite food, while savoring it for as long as possible. Tender and electrifying and Ubbe is so very in character, I love it.

Summary: Winnifred lives a sheltered life as a Christian woman in King Alfred’s court. Not truly understanding the meaning of sexual pleasure her new husband, Ubbe Ragnarsson, is more than willing to show her the path.

I wish I knew how to quit you by @niishiki - E - Ivar/Heahmund - 1,2k

To make it short, if you love the naughty forbidden church sex, old/young pairing and Ivar being a little shit, this is a must-read.

Summary: Bishop Heahmund is a man of God - yet, he finds himself unable to resist temptation time and time again.

Til the light comes back by @naps4bats - T - Emma/Canute - 5,4k

I really liked how canon was translated into modern day AU and how well it worked! It's a lovely story with all the characters we like and don't like but still love to read about.

Summary: Emma and Canute enjoy a brief romance during a power outage. A couple of weeks later, they find their real lives intertwine.

Summer Days, Summer Nights by @encomium-emmae - T - Emma/Canute - 3.5k

An absolute lovely read for this pairing, set in a modern day AU. I like me some competitive Emma and Canute duo!

Summary: During a week of mandated vacation at a beach resort, Emma encounters a dark-haired stranger. Too bad he turns out to be a first-rate jerk.

Lost Amongst the Meadow by @emma-ofnormandy - M - Emma/Canute - 1,5k

A canon compliant piece that fits perfectly like a missing scene!

Summary: Canute wakes to an empty bed and sets out to find his wife in the early summer dawn.

Absolutely adore the OFC Edith and her chemistry with Godwin. This 'verse has a few more little stories on tumblr and they are definitely worth checking out in the authors #edith eadig tag!

Summary: Godwin of Wessex knew how to be useful. He’d been Aethelred’s advisor before he’d been Edmund’s; before the Danes had left he’d made himself invaluable to Canute, too. And now that the first wife had taken up residence, it looked as though she, too, was availing herself of Godwin’s offered expertise.

Godwin has also never been a man who needed help - but he won't be able to deceive the Queen on this particular matter alone.

I Will Join You by @shelivesinhermind - Gen - Leif & Liv - 641 words

Missing scene potential. Wonderfully written and the respect Liv deserved to receive after her death.

Summary: A funeral for Liv.

The End of the Beginning by toughtobeashamgod - T - Freydis/Harald - 1,1k

Directly set after Freydis kills Kåre and even though it's rated T, it's a little bit gory due to the description of blood everywhere. Nevertheless, this fic was a nice little read and fits seamlessly into the canon 'verse.

Summary: They had come so far into this new world, only for it to end so quickly.

2022 End of the Year Fic Review

The wonderful @underragingwaves tagged me, thank you love! (I put the longest part under a cut)

1. What is your AO3 account? for the vikings fandom it's my pseud vikingstrash.

2. How many words did you write total in 2022? 117.233 *whistles* not too bad if one considers what a year it's been.

3. How many fics did you publish in 2022? How many multichapters vs oneshots? 39 one shots and 2 multichapter. All Hail the One-shots!

4. What was your longest fic? Your shortest fic? Longest was Kings of Kattegat with 39,878 words and the shortest Story as old as Time with 119 words.

5. What was your most popular fic? Your least popular fic? Most popular (going by subscriptions, hits, comments, kudos and bookmarks) has to be my VBB entry Kings of Kattegat. Personally, the most self-indulgent fic I ever wrote.

Least popular is Sweat. I guess it would be a lot more popular if it wasn't hidden behind the AO3 log in. And also if it had full on smut and not just teasing, but oh well, I like it and in the end, that's all that matters xD

6. What fic didn’t perform as well as you thought it would? Huh, that's a weird thing to think of, I never really give it much thought if my writing is going to be popular or not so that thought of a fic not "perfoming well" is kinda...absurd to me. Anyway, if I had to take a guess, I'd say Greedy Gods? While it does have a lot of hits and a couple kudos, it's weird to me that for a fandom with so many people claiming they want more fic about the female characters and how much they love Aslaug, there was not as much love for it as I would assume. Must be a me-problem.

7. What fic performed way better than you thought it would? Basically anything I wrote for D. P. - Deserter Pursuit. I didn't think there would be enough people in said fandom to read, kudo and comment, but was positively surprised.

8. What was your favorite fic you wrote from 2022? For Vikings: Valhalla, Daughter of the Fearless. I loved giving Altöra more background story and this glimpse of her relationship to Freydis. It was fun to write.

For Vikings, Strung up, Tongue-Tied. I mean....sub!Hvitserk restrained and dom!Amma playing with him? Ubbe observing, just being present without doing anything besides kissing Amma? Yeah, I loved that one. It's full of tension.

For D. P. - Deserter Pursuit, Pity. My dumb ass actually made it a published WIP because there was more to tell and I liked it a lot. Only the Gods know if I will actually write more though xD

9. What was your favorite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022? Well, for someone who couldn't be paid to read other people's fics, I managed to read quite a lot in 2022 for free. Mind boggling, I know. But here go my favs:

Gotta start with Not A Fairytale by underragingwaves, because...have you read that fic? It's really a fun read (for those who like crime stuff which is basically exactly what I love) and promising a bigger universe underneath that small treat she wrote.

Will totally never stop making hearteyes at Twice Now by ritual-unions. Love how Kara (heh) is so clumsy and unable to function in the real world and the way Ubbe basically just watches and smiles to himself, before his eye-roll moment that will make him intervene. I also love myself some good hurt and gosh, this is gonna hurt so damn bad at the end and I will love every second of it.

There were a couple to pick from and it was hard to choose, but when someone can make me read an Ivar fic, then it says a lot about that persons writing skill. The Mental Tyrant by grimeundglow deserves so much more love than it has been given.

Reactions Of Your Kind by Ulfrsmal was my fav of him in 2022, but only because I didn't really get to read the rest of his fics xD I'm sure there are more gems in his list, but this one stood out to me because...Hvitty and Ubbe 🥺

A Prize of Battle by Mercurygray, is absolute Emma/Canute goodness and Idk what else to say, because this womans writing skills are beyond anything I could muster, so hearteyes from afar will have to do for now.

For Mince Pie by emma-ofnormandy, another author that captures Emma and Canute's relationship so well and it's so fluffy, I wanna hold it really tightly against my chest.

And last but not least The Queen of Kattegat by northernxstories! I will remain deeply impressed by how effortlessly she managed to pull me into her story and made me read it in one go, even though it's 12k of words xD It was such a new way of approaching the characters and it's brilliantly written. An absolute treat in 2022.

Hello new person that doesn't show us your account and welcome to the fandom! 😆

I don't have the time to link all the fics I specifically liked, so I hope giving you the tags to the authors blogs will suffice 😊

Hmmm, so you mean apart from mine? 😋 Let me think, we got @underragingwaves who has them all as well and who's my personal favorite due to her world-building ability and how canon they all sound, @niishiki also writes for the Ragnarssons and her writing style will suck you right in! @grimeundglow successfully tried her hand at writing Ubbe and Hvitserk, but she also has Ivar fics (and if you're curious about Rollo, do yourself a favor and read those as well lol)- also very talented!

Then there's @ritual-unions-gotme our Ubbe specialist, she has Hvitty as well of course. @adrille88, the backbone of this fandom due to her endless support has started writing for the boys too, as well as @serasvictoria. I like @prepare4trouble's writing and @quantumlocked310.

You def should check @whenimaunicorn out! We also got @pomegranates-and-blood whose Ivar is great, but she also writes for other characters.

All of those people are very determined to create a compelling story, with characters true to canon and in no way fic factory stuff, which I do not and never will enjoy. If you like the rec's, let those wonderful souls know with a reblog and comment 😉

Oh goody, today is a very love filled one and I actually dig that a lot 💕

Kings of Kattegat is my very Explicit entry for the VBB22 and I gotta say this is probably one of the most self-indulgent fics I've ever written in this fandom and I love it. I got to have Amma/Ubbe, Amma/Hvitserk and Hvitserk/Ubbe in this poly ship. Pure heaven! Also, Gunnhild got herself someone special too, who is definitely not a potato and so much more...

Death awaits the Rude is a Gen/Mature fic that resolves around Aslaug and her sons Ubbe and Hvitserk. It's very much something I could envision given their bond and love for one another. Kind of a mother-sons character and relationship study?

Of Sharp Teeth and Hunger is Explicit not only due to smut, but also gore and horror themes which are all throughout the series. Yes, I love it, cause I could play with the Ragnarssons as supernatural/mythological creatures and write somewhat of a character study with them as monsters, literally. It was fun to find ways to keep it canon-ish. Also, I got to hop from one characters mind to the others.

Salvation in Gold was the second fic I uploaded in this fandom and I recently edited it and redrew the picture. I liked the idea before and I love the new version even more. The fix-it fic I didn't find anywhere and decided to write myself, tbh.

Gifts and Jewelry is an Explicit Ubbe/Aud fic. The very first time I wrote her as well, so it was an experience to figure out how to write a character we saw so little of. I was unsure of it at first, but once it flowed it was fun to write them together and I'm proud of the outcome.

phew, it was actually hard to pick...I knew one (KoK) and then my brain went blank, but now when I look at this assortment, I'm happy with it. 🥰

...why I don’t comment or like with this username, it’s because @bitchofdarkness is my mainaccount and I cannot comment, like or send asks with the vikingstrash username. Yeah, I don’t like it either, but at this point it makes no sense to create a new account.

I’m one of the hosts of @vikingsbigbang. Also one of the Mods who ran @vikingsevents and I'm also responsible for @vikings-archive. All of which are on hiatus indefinitely.

With those out of the way, I’ll tell you something else. I’m 33 and use she/her pronouns. I’ve been in a couple fandoms, some more active than others- definitely didn’t write in many though. I do have works on AO3 for Good Omens and Teen Wolf, if someone does like those too. And I’m not a native english speaker. Shocking, I know.

Although my absolute favorite Vikings ship is Ubbe/Hvitserk and those two idiots are my blorbos as the banner suggests, I do like a lot of other characters as well. Quite a lot actually.

In case you do want to send me a request it’s easier to name the characters I don’t like, so please refrain from sending me requests for Torvi, Bjorn, Lagertha and Leif. I cannot stand them. Pretty much anyone else is game in varying combinations or on their own. I’m open to try my hand at any of them.

I do take requests for Vikings: Valhalla as well. Did write some stories already.

Let’s see, what else is there to know? I don’t want to write reader-insert fics and when I do, I never use Y/N or other bluescreen inducing versions of that, because they hurt my brain. What I do like is writing in second person and hopping from one characters mind to the others, but also use mainly third-person limited. I do write dead dove content, but no full on rape- dubious consent is a possibility.

I decided to make a little list of completed fics I enjoyed so far and wanted to share them with you all! I know not everyone has the same taste, but maybe you find an author in here you want to read more of. I’ll link the title of their fic to AO3 and the account name will lead to the version on tumblr. This fic was one of the first I read on tumblr I think and I still love it so much, because of how well written and in character it is.

Summary: Tired of watching his mother struggle after the disappearance of their father, eleven year old Ubbe with the help of his younger brother Hvitserk, set out on an adventure to find their father, the great Ragnar Lothbrok.

Summer Wine by underragingwaves (captainkilly) - M - 7,170 Words

I was pointed towards this fic and have not regret reading it! The author has a very unique way with words that will drag you in and hold you captive while reading- in the best way!

Summary: Hvitserk takes more from the Alteciras raid and carries it all the way home.

I’ve got Dreams to Remember by serasvictoria - E - 8,244 Words

You’re in for a treat with this fic! Incubus!Hvitserk and lots of fun in a well-written story that’ll melt your brain.

Summary: A certain young man keeps showing up in your very x-rated dreams.

A Beautiful Chaos (Pride Month ‘21) by punkrocknpearls - E - 21,353 Words

Normally not an RPF fan, but the author is so talented I can’t not read it! This story is part of a whole ‘verse, that you can find here.

Summary: finding someone who can help you find your inner wildness is sometimes the best way to find your inner peace.

Cruor and Conquests by quantumlocked310 - E - 3,024 Words

The author has a very talented way of painting pictures in your mind while reading. This one might be a bit gory, but it’s very hot too which makes up for the bloody part a lot.

Summary: You and your love, Hvitserk, rejoice together in the throws of passion after a gory and glorious battle.

Mine & No One Else’s by deans-ch-ch-cherrypie - T - 3,538 Words

With the author being a Hvitserk fan, I certainly love that she also writes Ubbe well! And damn, possessive Ubbe is just very nice, okay?

Summary: You’ve caught the attention of an insistent earl and the situation is testing your best friend Ubbe’s patience.

Kiss You Godless by pomegranates-and-blood - E - 8,535 Words

Very, very hot sub! Hvitserk and the angst is chef’s kiss!

Summary: Hvitserk agreed to a no-strings-attached arrangement without thinking twice about it. Now, almost eight months into it, he finds himself lingering for too long on the curve of your smile and the sweetness of your voice. It probably means nothing, right?

Of Sniffles and Broken Bones by niishiki - T - 17,052 Words

Really, really loved this story! The bonds between all four brothers and how they interact is written so well and even though it’s a modern AU they’re all in character.

Summary: A short 4-Chapter fic about the Sons of Ragnar being sick or injured.

Uh-oh! I did it again 😂 So, here are my fic rec's no one asked for! This time I included WIPs as well 💕

I will put "(WIP)" behind unfinished fics, those who are finished do not have any addition. (Here's the first rec list I made) The pictures used for my header are partly from @underragingwaves and pinterest.

The links will take you to the AO3 version(except for two), because I think we all should give more credit there- as much as I love people engaging on tumblr, leaving kudos and comments on AO3 as well is not a hardship and most authors will give you the chance to comment as a guest. In This Life by @author-morgan - T - Halfdan/f!Reader - 1,562 words

I really like the clean writing style and how Halfdan was granted someone who loved him. That was something that kind of bugged me in the show and even though it's bittersweet, I will just accept this as canon!

Summary: If not in this life, then you will be reunited in the next to the joyous resounding of Valhalla’s horns.

A Day at the Lake by @prepare4trouble - G - Ragnarssons - 2,728 words

Slice of life kinda fic that I enjoyed a lot. For its shortness, it makes up with character insights and shenanigans. A lot of love for that!

Summary: Just the brothers hanging out together at the lake, before Ragnar came back and everything fell apart.

homeland, heartland by @underragingwaves - E - Ubbe/OFC - 41,555 words (WIP)

Those who don't read it are missing out big time! We get wonderfully written in-character Ubbe, Hvitserk- and I can only assume since I enjoy this fic slowly- Ivar. Very sweet nods to Aslaug are continuing to get me emotional. There are original characters that will suck you into their little world, make you care for them and of course: MERMAIDS. Do I have to say more?

Summary: Ubbe encounters a mermaid on his journey home from England. The deal he strikes with her has far-reaching consequences for the future of Kattegat, while the Great Army’s motions may be impeded by the Sea Empire’s meddling. As Ubbe attempts to build bridges, he may come to find that there is no way to stay neutral when trouble washes over him..

A New Life by @adrille88 - M - Hvitserk/OFC - 5,664 words (WIP)

One of the WIPs I will wait patiently for their continuation and until then enjoy what is already available to read! I love post-canon stories and how Hvitserk is followed on his new life journey in here.

Summary: Hvitserk was left in England feeling lost and unsure following the Battle of Edington. How he adjusted to his life in England and found his destiny there. (Contains spoilers for series finale!)

Stupid Games by @serasvictoria - E - Hvitserk/Reader/Ubbe - 29,133 words (WIP)

Everyone who knows me, is aware of my little obsession with love triangles or flat out polyamory relationships with Hvitserk and Ubbe. This right here? Scratches that itch really nicely!

Summary: When you were growing up you used to live next to the Lothbroks, but you eventually moved away and haven't seen them since. A wedding brings you back to town and during a bachelorette party you run into the brothers again.

Denmark and Danishes by @quantumlocked310 - G/E - Hvitserk/Reader - 5,042 words

This one is something very sweet and very hot. That I think this author is talented are not news. Loved this one to bits! I linked the series, so you can have an overview, the summary belongs to the first of two fics.

Summary: You're a new resident in Denmark, and this is your first time heading to work in the morning. Maybe the coffee shop around the corner will be your new regular spot. The cute barista certainly hopes so.

Lust by @grimeundglow - E - Hvitserk/Reader, Ivar/Reader - 7,943 words

If you like when it hurts, but also are a sucker for forbidden love, dig in! This one made my heart go out for Hvitserk, gave me the urge to knock sense into Ivar, but managed to make me coo at the end. It also has nome guest appearances of Helga and Floki! I really like how all of them are in-character.

Summary: Hvitserk liberates a farmer’s daughter from her quiet life in Northumbria, only to have his younger brother take a keen interest in her.

Before Love Came to Kill Us by @ritual-unions-gotme - T - Ubbe/OFC - 7,387 words

So, I have a confession to make: I'm a sucker for Soulmate AUs and here they see color for the first time when they meet their soulmate. And how heartbreaking is it, to find them and then have no chance to be with them? This one hurts in all the right places!

Summary: SOULMATE AU - Senta is dutifully waiting until the day she meets her soulmate, the day her world will explode in a burst of color, unfortunately the gods have given her the one mate she cannot have.

Aftermath by @whenimaunicorn - E - dark!Ubbe/Reader - 2,861 words

This, this right here is delicious, Ubbe smut and I fucking love it. Gimme pagan King Ubbe, I'll be a happy lil idiot!

Summary: Ubbe stayed in East Anglia and took over the Danes as pagan king. (PWP and Spoilers for the series final)

Midsummer by @niishiki - T - Ivar & Sigurd centric - 7,316 words

Another slice of life fic, modern setting and beautifully written. It explores the dynamic of Sigurd and Ivar's relationship, but also has a little bit of Hvitserk, Ubbe and Bjorn in it. Really loved it!

Summary: A traumatic childhood experience comes back to the surface when Ivar vanishes from a party under Sigurd's supervision.

Two Shieldmaidens by @artemiseamoon - T - Gunnhild/Reader - 517 words

A sweet little drabble that made me go all 'Aww' with my fav Gunnhild! We love us some wlw rep! (Story link will lead you to the tumblr post, since it's only available there)

Summary: Gunnhild's birthday party was a success and you reminisce over the events of last night while cleaning up...

My daughter, my girl by @pomegranates-and-blood - G - Lagertha & Gyda - 2,300 words

I cannot describe how this fic had me in my feels. I do love Gyda, but I never liked Lagertha- this fic though? It makes you like her and grief with her. And we always need more female rep in this fandom! (This fic is only on tumblr, so the link will take you there)

Summary: Lagertha thinks back on her years and her losses as her life nears its end. A retake on her choice of burying her sword in 6x01 with Lagertha as Demeter and Gyda as Persephone.

Don't forget to let the authors know you enjoyed their story's, you are never annoying as reader/commenter! 💕
