Eurevision category: Taqwacore
Broadly, Taqwacore is punk music with an Islamic bent. After an extra day for submissions (and a broadened category-- now you don't have to just submit taqwacore, rather, any Arab punk), you all came through and posted some great stuff. Thank you. I'd do actual stats on these, but I'm still not at my PC. New polls up soonish, one group per day like before.
The highest-seeded loser was Times New Roman (1) against American Typewriter (128); the highest-seeded submitted loser was Garamond (6) against Martel (123). The most controversial judging by the notes was The Unseen (108) beating Impact (21).

Class Round 1: Nymphaeales vs Ceratophyllales
Water Lilies vs Aquarium Plants
Nymphaeales: A basal clade of Magnoliophyta that contains the water lily family, and other aquatic plants with prominent flowers. Water lilies with larger flowers and more complex parts are pollinated by beetles -- they were initially believed to be plants that evolved earlier, but while Nymphaeales as a whole did diverge early, the ones with more flower parts did not diverge earlier than the ones with fewer flower parts. Water lilies were used as an indicator of water cleanliness in the Maya civilization, were a symbol of the Maya elite, and were likely used in a religious context to induce altered states of consciousness.
Ceratophyllales: Core Magnoliophytes that are very closely related to the eudicots. These aquatic plants are found all over the world, and are known as coontails or hornworts (though they are not related to the non-vascular hornworts from the phylum battle.) Ceratophyllum demersum is sold as an aquarium plant, and is considered invasive in Tasmania and New Zealand, where it has been known to interfere with hydroelectric power plants.

Rock Swag Tournament Round 1: Igneous Rocks Part 1
Pink or White?
Both of these rocks are GRANITE which means they are coarse-grained (phaneritic) rocks that contain at least 20% quartz and no more than 10% mafic minerals. The rest is some kind of feldspar. Mafic minerals are the black grains you see in the samples above and are most likely the minerals pyroxene, amphibole, or biotite.

The distinction between these two granites comes with the type of feldspar contained in the rock.
The feldspar content in alkali granite is almost entirely orthoclase (aka k-spar or potassium feldspar). The pink grains in this rock are orthoclase crystals. Fun fact, my dad's headstone is an alkali granite and the specific variety used is called "North American Pink."

The feldspars that make up plagiogranite (also known as tonalite) are almost entirely plagioclase feldspar, which contain calcium or sodium instead of potassium. These are typically dark grey to white in color. In this particular sample, the white grains are sodium feldspar (aka albite).

I have a lot of opinions that I keep to myself, and there's a huge rant behind this that isn't worth going into, so at the risk of getting water-filtered as a dirty liberal I'm just gonna put this out there:
It's not about lEsSeR oF tWO eViLs it's about whether we wanna fully and permanently destroy the brakes on the runaway fascism train, so go ahead and block me if you're actively discouraging others from voting blue in 2024 and/or deliberately bullying people out of it by throwing around social justice buzzwords, blanket generalizations, emotionally charged accusations, and outright character assassination for wrongthink.
