Edward/Edith The Blue Engine [NWR AU]
Tumblr media
History
Edith was built in 1890 as LSWR No. 577 of William Adam's X2 Class 4-4-0s. She originally carried the name Edward, but as she made the choice to change genders, I will be referring to her as Edith throughout this post. She worked out of Nine Elms shed between 1891 and 1915 when she was purchased by the NWR to work their express trains. Upon arrival, she was stabled at Vicarstown with her colleague Thomas. By the end of the Great War in 1918, her parts were thoroughly worn out and the workload was far too much for her, so The Fat Director purchased an "Atlantic" from a relatively little-known works in England to run his premiere express trains while Edith went in for refurbishment. Unfortunately however, the engine he received (Henry) performed far worse than expected, forcing the refurbishment work on Edith to be halted as she was pressed back into service once again. She soldiered on until 1922, when the railway bought Gordon. After Gordon's purchase, the railway was strapped for cash, so she was left in the back of the shed until repairs could be afforded. Unfortunately, in all the postwar stress, The Fat Director forgot to schedule her repairs and she was left there until 1924, when a driver took pity on the already life-expired engine and offered to take her out for a run, after which she was sent for repairs where it was found that the tolerances on her motion had been worn down so much that there was near an eighth-inch of play. After the works had finished with her in 1925, she was practically in factory-fresh condition.
Her life following this was relatively uneventful, up until her re-assignment to the Brendam Branchline in 1936, soon after which she had to chase a runaway James along the mainline to prevent a derailment. During the Second World War, Brendam Harbour was constantly full to capacity and often got raided by the Luftwaffe, which once again meant that Edith was thrashed to breaking point. Her schedule was packed to the brim with troop trains from every corner of the island to Brendam Harbour. Being relatively fast as well as light, she was the perfect engine for the job.
After the war, she was once again worn out completely, which was not helped by the increase in traffic due to the completion of the Sodor China Clay Company's Bill & Ben. Due to postwar austerity, she wasn't overhauled until it was far too late. While on an enthusiast's special in 1959, she split her left crank pin, causing her con-rod to break free of her wheel, bending her frame and splashers out of shape. Never one to give up, she slogged the eight-coach train as far as Wellsworth before being relieved by Mark, who was working thunderbird duties at the time. After her exploit, she received a very hasty and very desperate apology from Sir Charles Topham Hatt II, who gave her a complete overhaul as soon as possible. After her overhaul, she met a lonely Trevor the Traction Engine while passing by Crock's Scrap Yard. After making her crew aware of him, the three decided to consult the local vicar, and after a few negotiations, he was bought for the vicarage orchard.
In 1962, The Fat Controller noticed that Edith was struggling to keep up with the workload alone, and so purchased a failed diesel locomotive design from British Railways. The pair first met when Bill and Ben decided to play a trick on the newcomer, having their crews remove their nameplates and pretend they were the same engine. After Edith scared them off, the two got to chatting. Edith and BoCo have been firm friends ever since.
In 1971, Edith (then still known as Edward) made the realisation that she did not and had never felt male. With the support of Sir Charles, she changed her name to Edith, Sir Charles even having new custom nameplates cast for her. It took the others some time to come around, but they eventually all accepted her decision. By 2017, Edith was 127 and was certainly feeling her age. She put in a request to Sir Stephen Topham Hatt to formally retire from revenue service. Her request was granted and she went on an island-wide farewell tour. After her retirement, she was purchased by Sir Robert Norramby II for his (formerly his father's) estate railway/museum, where she resides to this day.
Personality
Edith is a caring, sweet and thoughtful engine, often putting others before herself. Though admirable, her selflessness sometimes leads to self-neglect or damage. Though she's usually the go-to engine to talk about your issues to, she shares very little about her own. Despite her shortcomings, she is a joy to talk to and was an asset to the railway.
Thank you for reading, I'll see you in the next one.
Cheerio!

You Never Beavers Crossing the Street
You Never See Beavers Crossing the Street
it's an amazing world right outside your door
many things to see, many places to explore
but still more amazing, positively neat
is that you never see beavers crossing the street
imagine limitless lines of luxury cars
winos on the corner stumbling out of bars
pimps in faux fur and fingers a-bling
ladies of the night are hawking flings
there's a drunk guy in the alley, pissing on a wall
six girls in a group all taking calls
litter on the sidewalk, refuse in the gutter
homeless man advancing his cart full of clutter
flying overhead, steel birds with their roar
an octagenarian standing in her door
tots in the park shooting balls in the basket
a motorcade in honor of a loved one's casket
the limbs of tall elms blowing in the breeze
a little boy crying with two skinned knees
an old man bent over, clutching his back
a mom with her groceries in her own "green" sack
thugs on the prowl for victims with dough
a man in a trench with his measly show
TVs in windows all show the same channel
Superbowl previews on a 50 inch flat panel
girl scouts with their cookies, all garbed in green
shirtless construction workers with that sun-baked sheen
tramp walks by in her three inch heels
fully aware what her short skirt reveals
man stands with sign "the end is near"
a vicar walks by, manner austere
small group of runners in overpriced sneakers
coupe's hatchback filled with woofers and tweeters
boys on park benches full of desire
girls walk by and set them on fire
sirens and whistles, bells and squeals
behemoths rumble by on eighteen wheels
overdressed fellow pimping sex shows inside
sicko pulls over offering offspring a ride
uniformed officer moving traffic along
Romeo sings his Juliette a sweet song
it's an amazing world right outside your door
many things to see, many places to explore
but with all that you see walking the concrete
you never see beavers crossing the street.

So I’ve been thinking about Britnatural
Full credit to @dreamprophet for the original idea
And I have thoughts. So many thoughts.
Sam and Dean are obviously from Essex now, and speak with a mild to medium Estuary accent. I haven’t fancast them but I need you to know that in my head they’re played by the two guys from Two Pints of Lager. Dean dresses exclusively in tracksuits. He probably has a burberry cap that is either put on or taken off to indicate that this time he means business. When not hunting demons, he makes his living hustling darts. In the first episode, he will defeat a ghost by throwing a holy-water soaked dart through the ghost’s head and then yelling “One Hundred and Eighty!” This will establish his character.
Tumblr media
[artists rendition of Sam and Dean questioning witnesses]
Rather than salad and burgers, the class difference between Sam and Dean is now demonstrated by the fact that Sam drinks Aspels cider and Dean drinks Frosty Jacks (or White Lightning, depends who’ll sponsor us). Dean also has at least three embarrasing stories about Sam getting pissed on Lambrinis. Sam likes Irn Bru, because he went to Edinburgh for university, and Dean mocks him for this, whereas Sam mock dean for having inheritted all of John’s Cliff Richard tapes
John is played by Robson Green, aka McNair from Being Human
Tumblr media
When he leaves to go looking for the demon which killed his wife (played by Jane Horrocks) he leaves Dean the keys to the family car
Tumblr media
a morris traveller affectionately called Bastard. The fandom immediately fancasts Bastard’s human-sona as David Tennant despite the writers best efforts to the contrary. The traveller’s top speed of 50 mph explains how they’re able to spend so much time on the road in such a tiny country.
They investigate mysteries by posing as either DEFRA agents or Community Support Officers. There’s one episode where they’re supposed to pose as men of God but instead of sexy young priests they’re anglican vicars, Dean nearly blows their cover by refusing to wear a cardigan or eat slightly stale squashed fly biscuits.
Cas is played by Kris Marshall, best known for leaving My Family to become a film star and then never being in any films
Tumblr media
He wears an anorak and his host body was very involved in running coffee mornings for the local CofE church
On their travels they will meet beloved recurring characters such as Ruby (Lauren Socha)
Tumblr media
Charlie (Richard Aoyade)
Tumblr media
Meg (Ruth Jones)
Tumblr media
and yorkshire Bobby played by Steve Halliwell off of Emerdale
Tumblr media
They’ll also face daunting villains like Crowley (still played by Mark Sheppard but we’ll dub in a voice so he’s now from Merthyr), Chuck (played by Rob Brydon, obviously) and Lucifer himself (played by Martin Kemp).
Episode concepts include
- A thinly veilled Midsommer Murders parody where they investigate a sleepy village with 900 x the national murder rate, in which John Nettles will cameo as the local police officer (the culprit will turn out to be his wife, who is placing curses on people)
- Three sepperate Jack the Ripper episodes (not a recurring villain, they just keep finding new culprits each time and never acknoledge they’ve done this before), and one where it looks like the Ripper but turns out to be the Trunk Killer
- Sam and Dean fight the Beast of Bodmin
- Nessie, obviously
- You know how everyone knows someone who found a dead body during Duke of Edinburgh? yeah, that.
- The ghost of that monkey that was hanged in the forrest of dean because the locals thought it was a french spy
- a wicker-man inspired folk horror episode full of actors from the Archers and including lots of creepy music being played over footage of southern white hanky morris dance
- they have exactly one actually scary episode, inspired by Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm and it gets so many complaints Broadcasting standards pull it
- the highgate cemetary vampire (played by Noel Fielding)
- that one pond in epping forrest that’s supposed to eat people
- they share locations with Dr Who a lot and extras from the wrong show end up in shot so often they have to do an aliens episode to explain it
- Tolkein epsiode where they fight Ents but this is Britnatural so instead of tree-men the Ents look like normal men, but can also turn into normal looking trees
- so many reformation era monks. so many. you know how SPN feels about civil-war era widows? that’s how Britnatural feels about monks
- a sponsored episode where they fight the witch of wooky hole and then go to the theme park and talk loudly about how great it is
- Dean’s dramatic death on the ranch when the hellhounds get him (they’re now Staffies, obviously) takes place on a farm in Herefordshire
- instead of LARPing Richard Ayoade’s Charlie is just a member of the Sealed Knot so Sam and Dean have to dress up as Cavaliers and Roundheads
- any ghosts of well known historical figures are played by whoever played them most often on Horrible Histories
- the ghost of someone heavily implied to be Bruce Forsythe is haunting the ballroom at Blackpool tower (there’s definitely at least one instance of a hammond organ playing itself) and when they go undercover Dean is forced to dance in a competition thus revealing his secret love of ballroom dancing
- the Changing Channels episode has a weirdly meta bit where they’re on goggle box watching themselves be on the basil brush show

The Old Vicarage, Grantchester by Rupert Brooke (Cafe des Westens, Berlin, May 1912)
Just now the lilac is in bloom, All before my little room; And in my flower-beds, I think, Smile the carnation and the pink; And down the borders, well I know, The poppy and the pansy blow . . . Oh! there the chestnuts, summer through, Beside the river make for you A tunnel of green gloom, and sleep Deeply above; and green and deep The stream mysterious glides beneath, Green as a dream and deep as death. — Oh, damn! I know it! and I know How the May fields all golden show, And when the day is young and sweet, Gild gloriously the bare feet That run to bathe . . .                                 ‘Du lieber Gott!’
Here am I, sweating, sick, and hot, And there the shadowed waters fresh Lean up to embrace the naked flesh. Temperamentvoll German Jews Drink beer around; — and THERE the dews Are soft beneath a morn of gold. Here tulips bloom as they are told; Unkempt about those hedges blows An English unofficial rose; And there the unregulated sun Slopes down to rest when day is done, And wakes a vague unpunctual star, A slippered Hesper; and there are Meads towards Haslingfield and Coton Where das Betreten’s not verboten.
granchester 2 . . . would I were In Grantchester, in Grantchester! — Some, it may be, can get in touch With Nature there, or Earth, or such. And clever modern men have seen A Faun a-peeping through the green, And felt the Classics were not dead, To glimpse a Naiad’s reedy head, Or hear the Goat-foot piping low: . . . But these are things I do not know. I only know that you may lie Day long and watch the Cambridge sky, And, flower-lulled in sleepy grass, Hear the cool lapse of hours pass, Until the centuries blend and blur In Grantchester, in Grantchester. . . . Still in the dawnlit waters cool His ghostly Lordship swims his pool, And tries the strokes, essays the tricks, Long learnt on Hellespont, or Styx. Dan Chaucer hears his river still Chatter beneath a phantom mill. Tennyson notes, with studious eye, How Cambridge waters hurry by . . . And in that garden, black and white, Creep whispers through the grass all night; And spectral dance, before the dawn, A hundred Vicars down the lawn; Curates, long dust, will come and go On lissom, clerical, printless toe; And oft between the boughs is seen The sly shade of a Rural Dean . . . Till, at a shiver in the skies, Vanishing with Satanic cries, The prim ecclesiastic rout Leaves but a startled sleeper-out, Grey heavens, the first bird’s drowsy calls, The falling house that never falls.
God! I will pack, and take a train, And get me to England once again! For England’s the one land, I know, Where men with Splendid Hearts may go; And Cambridgeshire, of all England, The shire for Men who Understand; And of THAT district I prefer The lovely hamlet Grantchester. For Cambridge people rarely smile, Being urban, squat, and packed with guile; And Royston men in the far South Are black and fierce and strange of mouth; At Over they fling oaths at one, And worse than oaths at Trumpington, And Ditton girls are mean and dirty, And there’s none in Harston under thirty, And folks in Shelford and those parts Have twisted lips and twisted hearts, And Barton men make Cockney rhymes, And Coton’s full of nameless crimes, And things are done you’d not believe At Madingley on Christmas Eve. Strong men have run for miles and miles, When one from Cherry Hinton smiles; Strong men have blanched, and shot their wives, Rather than send them to St. Ives; Strong men have cried like babes, bydam, To hear what happened at Babraham. But Grantchester! ah, Grantchester! There’s peace and holy quiet there, Great clouds along pacific skies, And men and women with straight eyes, Lithe children lovelier than a dream, A bosky wood, a slumbrous stream, And little kindly winds that creep Round twilight corners, half asleep. In Grantchester their skins are white; They bathe by day, they bathe by night; The women there do all they ought; The men observe the Rules of Thought. They love the Good; they worship Truth; They laugh uproariously in youth; (And when they get to feeling old, They up and shoot themselves, I’m told) . . .
Ah God! to see the branches stir Across the moon at Grantchester! To smell the thrilling-sweet and rotten Unforgettable, unforgotten River-smell, and hear the breeze Sobbing in the little trees. Say, do the elm-clumps greatly stand Still guardians of that holy land? The chestnuts shade, in reverend dream, The yet unacademic stream? Is dawn a secret shy and cold Anadyomene, silver-gold? And sunset still a golden sea From Haslingfield to Madingley? And after, ere the night is born, Do hares come out about the corn? Oh, is the water sweet and cool, Gentle and brown, above the pool? And laughs the immortal river still Under the mill, under the mill? Say, is there Beauty yet to find? And Certainty? and Quiet kind? Deep meadows yet, for to forget The lies, and truths, and pain? . . . oh! yet Stands the Church clock at ten to three? And is there honey still for tea?

Do you have some game OSTs that you really like?
Oh, too many! What a wonderful question, though.
Transistor: Beautiful, moody, sort of Noir-ish almost, interspersed with beautiful vocals. Personal favourites: Old Friends & Coasting
Pyre: The same devs of Transistor also made the wonderful Pyre, which conincidentally also has the most gorgeous soundtrack. Personal favourites: Vagrant Song & Will of the Scribes
Dishonored 1 & Dishonored 2: It’s only fitting that one of the most atmospheric game series also has one of the most atmospheric soundtracks. Dark, eerie, sometimes threatening, but always beautiful, using a wide array of intruments. Daniel Licht was a master of his craft. Personal favourites: Delilah’s Theme & Brigmore Lullaby
Dragon Age 3 & Trespasser DLC: I always thought the soundtracks of the Dragon Age series were lacking and then DA3 came along. Trevor Morris did an amazing job. As cinematic and bombastic as the game. Personal favourites: In Hushes Whispers & We Fight On
Mass Effect 1: My favourite of the series also has the best soundtrack. It’s the perfect soundtrack for the sometimes dark, sometimes light, but always hopeful space opera that it was. Personal favourites: Vigil & From The Wreckage & M4 Part II
The Witcher 3: Gorgeous soundtrack that really helped to make an already wonderfully detailed world come to life. There’s an interesting folkloric aspect to it as well. Personal favourites: The Fields of Ard Skellige & Versus Caranthir & Silver For Monsters & Lullaby of Woe
The Wolf Among Us: Again, very atmospheric, very Noir-ish, but modern. I always find myself coming back to it. Personal favourites: Bigby’s Apartment & Prince Lawrence’s Home & Main Theme
Oxenfree: As quirky and different as the game, the different sometimes borders on psychedelic and trippy. Personal favourites: Cold Comfort & The Beach 7AM & Dead Light
Kentucky Route Zero: Speaking of psychedlic and trippy.Personal favourites: Too Late To Love You
Detroit: Become Human: I loved the idea of different soundtracks for the different main characters. My favourites were Connor’s and Kara’s soundtrack. Connor’s is quite Blade Runner-esque, while Kara’s has lovely orchestral pieces. Personal favourites: Hostage & Interrogation & Kara’s Theme & Dark Night
L.A. Noire: If you do enjoy Old Hollywood and Film Noir, you will adore this soundtrack.Personal favourites: Main Theme & (I Always Kill) The Things I Love
Pillars of Eternity 1 & Pillars of Eternity 2: Beautifully rich tracks that make an isometric world come alive just as much as the writing does. Also, the sea shanties of Deadfire? I love them all. Personal favourites: Twin Elms & Characters Creation
Arcanum: It’s an old Steampunk RPG in the spirit of Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale, and the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. Violins, cello, gorgeous. Personal favourites: Arcanum & In Memoriam
The Order: 1886: Another Steampunk game, this time with Nikola Tesla. Again, with an amazing, very moody soundtrack.Personal favourites: The Knights’ Theme & Agamemnon
The Last of Us: Gustavo Santaolalla created the perfect soundtrack for this post-apocalyptic story. The guitar pieces in particular are beautiful. It’s also worth checking out the music of the Left Behind DLC.Personal favourites: The Choice & The Hour
Unravel: A charming game with an even more charming soundtrack. Again very much folklore, fitting the setting and mood of the game. Personal favourites: Berry Mire & Yarny’s Theme
Bloodborne: If you like choirs, orchestras and are in the mood for something very Dramatique™ and Lovecraftian, look no further.Personal favourites: The First Hunter & Lady Maria Of The Astral Clocktower & Laurence The First Vicar
Journey: Possibly a classic at this point. Very soothing, especially after a stressful day.Personal favourites: Nascence & Apotheosis & I Was Born For This
What Remains of Edith Finch: A walking simulator with a wonderful story and gorgeous piano pieces for a soundtrack. Personal favourites: Milton’s Tower & Edith’s Theme
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter: Another walking simulator with fantastic music to fit the gorgeous scenery.Personal favourites: Ethan’s Theme & The Valley of the Blinding Mist
I tried to keep it short and as you can see: I failed. And I probably only mentioned half of the video game soundtracks I absolutely adore. Perhaps I might do another post at a later date.

The Beast Within: a Persona 5 AU
In which all the Phantom Thieves, sans Morgana, fall under a curse that turns them into monsters as a result of their personas talking over their bodies.  Goro Akechi, who survived Shido’s Palace, is their final hope to free them.
EDIT 9/15/18: changed Futaba’s, Ann’s, and Ryuji’s forms.
EDIT 9/23/18: changed Yusuke’s initial form and Ren’s monster name.
EDIT 11/3/20: Found a wordplay for Ryuji, now integrating it into the finalized names. Also changed the face of Saklas.
THE MONSTER RULES:
When the transformation began, each thief’s mask began to meld with their face.  Then their clothing.  And then their whole bodies morphed really painfully - their descriptions will come later.
The only way to free a monster is to crack open the beast’s face, which is always a twisted form of the thief’s original mask.  Once this is done, however, the beast enters a “desperate” form that increases their strength at the cost of mental vulnerability.  At this point, the original persona-user can regain control of their body.
The first form has traits from each thief’s initial persona, and their desperate form has traits from their ultimate persona.
All of them have yellow eyes, a sign of possession.
The Metaverse became parallel dimension to reality - no palaces or Mementos, just a shadow-infested Shibuya in which the monsters prowl.
THE MONSTERS (names a work in progress until 2020):
“Gnarled Rose” (Haru Okumura)
A dress-wearing insectoid; similar to Simone from Nier:Automata and Queen Sectonia from Kirby Triple Deluxe.
Extremely pompous and obsessed with beauty.
Kidnaps shadows and humans to take their nutrients.
Desperate form is an amorphous tangle of thorny vines with a large rose containing Haru’s body in the center.
Attacks with ax-leaves and grenade seedpods (along with vines in her desperate form).
“Lovecraft’s Masterpiece” (Futaba Sakura)
A spider-like machine with a black body and green “tron-lines,” with tentacles for legs.
Futaba’s body is mostly fused with the machinery - she gives off major H.R. Giger vibes.
Emotionless, but with all the mannerisms of an evil A.I.
Dissects shadows and humans to learn all about them.
Desperate form is essentially a mechanical xenomorph queen with Prometheus’ markings.
Uses tentacles and plasma blasts to subdue her foes.
“Jordan’s Ride” (Makoto Nijima)
Imagine a motorcycle rider forcibly fused with its vehicle - that’s this beast.  Think of Dan Jordan’s death from A Nightmare on Elm Street: the Dream Child.
Always wants to race or fight, but a sore loser.
Desperate form is like Leviathan (Shadow Sae’s boss form): a large, lumbering bike leader with motorcycle parts and a lower jaw resembling a reverse bear trap (only Makoto’s upper half of her face is visible).
Uses revolver cannons on her wrist to strike from afar, and sharp knuckles and brute force to beat the life out of her opponents.
“Tamamo the Artisan” (Yusuke Kitagawa)
A large silver fox with nine tails bound into one tail by red rope.
Schizophrenic artist with delusions of perfect beauty.
Uses the body parts (e.g. hair for brushes and skin for canvas) of his victims for his art.
His desperate form is a huge (~15 ft tall), partially humanoid fox - think of an antlerless Vicar Amelia (Bloodborne).  His fur goes from silver to blue, he gains a huge white ruff of fur at his shoulders, and his nine tails break out of their bindings.
Yusuke’s face isn’t humanoid - rather, he became a full fox to fit his mask.
Slashes prey to ribbons with long katana-like claws, and scorches them alive using his tails to fire his “foxfire” (it’s really ice shards) like assault gun bullets.
“Wily Joan” (Ann Takamaki)
A red cheetah-like wildcat with the face of a lynx and a forked whiplike tail.
Confident and prideful (think Bayonetta with a more sinister edge).
Likes to play with shadows and humans as “toys” and eats them when they’re bored.
In her desperate form, Wily Joan’s fur becomes a mix of blond, red and black and she gains dog-shaped shoulder pads.  She can also attack on two legs and resembles the digimon Raguelmon as a result.
Ann’s face resembles a mountain lion’s.
Along with her sharp claws, she uses her tail as a whip and shoots venomous quills like a machine gun from her back and (in her desperate form) her arms.
“Gashing Dokuro” (Ryuji Sakamoto)
A partially-muscled gashadokuro (giant skeleton) made of lead pipes.
He’s very tall - I liken him to Scarlet from Silent Hill Homecoming.
Greedy - strips humans and shadows of their flesh to collect their bones.
His desperate form is a near-starving monkey with fur like stormclouds - it’s like Darkbeast Paarl from Bloodborne.
Uses lead bones and large blasts of electricity to fight.
“Saklas, the Foolish God” (Ren Amamiya)
Resembles a well-dressed Baphomet, with a white goatlike face and a hidden wide maw like 2017 Pennywise.
Unlike the other beasts, Saklas is very well-mannered and polite, but it’s all a ruse to lull his prey into a false sense of security before biting their heads off or swallowing them whole.
His desperate form is the largest of all - it’s a mass of black feathers, horns and wings that’s hard to decipher (I would liken it to Howl’s beast form from Howl’s Moving Castle).
Ren’s face is surprisingly unaltered when Saklas isn’t trying to hide it.
Has daggerlike claws and teeth, along with gun-holes in the bases of his palms (another thing I just made up).

I fitted a candle to the blue ceramic holder on the dressing table by the light of the next flash, then moved about the room, lighting others, ’til the whole room was filled with a soft, wavering radiance. Very romantic, I thought, and with some presence of mind, I pressed down the light switch, so that a sudden return of power shouldn’t ruin the mood at some inopportune moment.
The candles had burned no more than a half-inch when the door opened and Frank blew in. Literally, for the draft that followed him up the stairs extinguished three of the candles.
The door closed behind him with a bang that blew out two more, and he peered into the sudden gloom, pushing a hand through his disheveled hair. I got up and relit the candles, making mild remarks about his abrupt methods of entering rooms. It was only when I had finished and turned to ask him whether he’d like a drink, that I saw he was looking rather white and unsettled.
“What’s the matter?” I said. “Seen a ghost?”
“Well, you know,” he said slowly, “I’m not at all sure that I haven’t.” Absentmindedly, he picked up my hairbrush and raised it to tidy his hair. When a sudden whiff of L’Heure Bleu reached his nostrils, he wrinkled his nose and set it down again, settling for the attentions of his pocket comb instead.
I glanced through the window, where the elm trees were lashing to and fro like flails. A loose shutter was banging somewhere on the other side of the house, and it occurred to me that we ought perhaps to close our own, though the carry-on outside was rather exciting to watch.
“Bit blustery for a ghost, I’d think,” I said. “Don’t they like quiet, misty evenings in graveyards?”
Frank laughed a bit sheepishly. “Well, I daresay it’s only Bainbridge’s stories, plus a bit more of his sherry than I really meant to have. Nothing at all, likely.”
Now I was curious. “What exactly did you see?” I asked, settling myself on the dressing-table seat. I motioned to the whisky bottle with a half-lifted brow, and Frank went at once to pour a couple of drinks.
“Well, only a man, really,” he began, measuring out a jigger for himself and two for me. “Standing down in the road outside.”
“What, outside this house?” I laughed. “Must have been a ghost, then; I can’t feature any living person standing about on a night like this.”
Frank tilted the ewer over his glass, then looked accusingly at me when no water came out.
“Don’t look at me,” I said. “You used up all the water. I don’t mind it neat, though.” I took a sip in illustration.
Frank looked as though he were tempted to nip down to the lavatory for water, but abandoned the idea and went on with his story, sipping cautiously as though his glass contained vitriol, rather than the best Glenfiddich single malt whisky.
“Yes, he was down at the edge of the garden on this side, standing by the fence. I thought”—he hesitated, looking down into his glass—“I rather thought he was looking up at your window.”
“My window? How extraordinary!” I couldn’t repress a mild shiver, and went across to fasten the shutters, though it seemed a bit late for that. Frank followed me across the room, still talking.
“Yes, I could see you myself from below. You were brushing your hair and cursing a bit because it was standing on end.”
“In that case, the fellow was probably enjoying a good laugh,” I said tartly. Frank shook his head, though he smiled and smoothed his hands over my hair.
“No, he wasn’t laughing. In fact, he seemed terribly unhappy about something. Not that I could see his face well; just something about the way he stood. I came up behind him, and when he didn’t move, I asked politely if I could help him with something. He acted at first as though he didn’t hear me, and I thought perhaps he didn’t, over the noise of the wind, so I repeated myself, and I reached out to tap his shoulder, to get his attention, you know. But before I could touch him, he whirled suddenly round and pushed past me and walked off down the road.”
“Sounds a bit rude, but not very ghostly,” I observed, draining my glass. “What did he look like?”
“Big chap,” said Frank, frowning in recollection. “And a Scot, in complete Highland rig-out, complete to sporran and the most beautiful running-stag brooch on his plaid. I wanted to ask where he’d got it from, but he was off before I could.”
I went to the bureau and poured another drink. “Well, not so unusual an appearance for these parts, surely? I’ve seen men dressed like that in the village now and then.”
“Nooo…” Frank sounded doubtful. “No, it wasn’t his dress that was odd. But when he pushed past me, I could swear he was close enough that I should have felt him brush my sleeve—but I didn’t. And I was intrigued enough to turn round and watch him as he walked away. He walked down the Gereside Road, but when he’d almost reached the corner, he…disappeared. That’s when I began to feel a bit cold down the backbone.”
“Perhaps your attention was distracted for a second, and he just stepped aside into the shadows,” I suggested. “There are a lot of trees down near that corner.”
“I could swear I didn’t take my eyes off him for a moment,” muttered Frank. He looked up suddenly. “I know! I remember now why I thought he was so odd, though I didn’t realize it at the time.”
“What?” I was getting a bit tired of the ghost, and wanted to go on to more interesting matters, such as bed.
“The wind was cutting up like billy-o, but his drapes—his kilts and his plaid, you know—they didn’t move at all, except to the stir of his walking.”
We stared at each other. “Well,” I said finally, “that is a bit spooky.”
Frank shrugged and smiled suddenly, dismissing it. “At least I’ll have something to tell the Vicar next time I see him. Perhaps it’s a well-known local ghost, and he can give me its gory history.” He glanced at his watch. “But now I’d say it’s bedtime.”
“So it is,” I murmured.

MY JOURNAL CỦA KỲ NGHỈ CỦA TÔI VACATING HÀNH TINH TRÁI ĐẤT (BAO GỒM CẢ CUỘC GẶP GỠ CỦA TÔI VỚI THIÊN CHÚA ALMIGHTY JEHOVAH, VÀ MỘT THIÊN SỨ CỦA THIÊN CHÚA ALMIGHTY).
Bởi Dr Neil Leslie Gilbert.-Williams-Jacksnephew (Trong Việt)
ĐĂNG HAI
I (Neil Leslie Gilbert.-Williams-Jacksnephew) chỉ cần tham dự nhà thờ của Anh St Michael ' s, Croydon (thuộc giáo phận Southwark) MASS.
 Trở lại trong những năm 1980. Khi tôi đã là một nhỏ tôi nhớ lại một phần của kinh thánh (Mary mẹ của Thiên Chúa: Chúa Jesus Christ Emanuel Thiên Chúa của chúng tôi) khi được đề cập bởi các Vicar của thời gian tại nhà thờ St Stephen's Terrace St Stephen, London SW8 1DH Anh, Vương Quốc Anh (Vicar Helen) trong lời cầu , trong đó nhầm lẫn tôi tại nhà thờ St Stephen, St stephen's Terrace, London SW8 1DH Anh, Vương Quốc Anh, vì vậy tôi hỏi các mục sư của St Stephens Church St Stephen's Terrace, London SW8 1DH Anh, Vương Quốc Anh (mục sư Christopher);
' The Holy Bible nói trong sách Khải huyền rằng Thiên Chúa Almighty làm trái đất! nhưng Chúa Jesus Christ-Emanuel được sinh ra trên trái đất (khoảng) ngày 25 tháng 12 tại Bethlehem ở Judea, ở phía nam của Palestine vào đầu mùa thu của 2 B. C. E [https://www.jw.org/en/bible-teachings/questions/when-was-jesus-born]. Vì vậy, làm thế nào có thể Chúa Giêsu Kitô Emanuel đã làm cho trái đất và nhân loại nếu ông là Almighty Thiên Chúa, như Chúa Jesus Christ Emanuel được sinh ra trong mùa thu đầu của 2 B. C. E?`

Shudder Boasts its Biggest Horror Movie and TV Line-Up Ever in April
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Shudder is pulling out all the shivery stops to commemorate the startling fact that we are exactly halfway to the most beloved date on any horror fan’s calendar, Halloween. Yes, that’s right, this month (April) is the six-month mark and the world’s scariest streaming outlet is celebrating with “Halfway to Halloween,” a massive slate of programming that begins on April 1 and continues throughout the rest of the month.
This is no April Fool’s joke (although we have some if you want). Shudder is rolling out a brand new batch of exclusive and/or original programming, including the second season of its acclaimed Creepshow series, the premiere of a new series of original short films called Deadhouse Dark, the highly anticipated sequel to its In Search of Darkness documentary, the return of The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs, and the 2021 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.
But wait, the channel won’t let the first 30 of the next 180 days until Halloween pass without new movies to watch as well. In addition to thrilling new exclusives like Shudder original film The Banishing, Train to Busan: Peninsula and Boys from County Hell, brand new additions to the outlet’s ever-expanding international library include horror tales of both classic and recent vintage, including The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 2, Night of the Lepus, Housebound, Attack of the Demons, Horror Express, The Stepfather and more.
If you’re blown away by all this and want more horror, the “Halfway to Halloween” Hotline is for you. Every Friday in April from 3pm-4pm ET, Shudder subscribers are invited to call director of programming Samuel Zimmerman to discuss all things horror, from their favorite films of all time to which horror releases they’re looking forward to this year. Based on what you tell him, Zimmerman will offer customized viewing recommendations from Shudder’s film collection — a personally curated film festival direct from a foremost expert in the field.
If you’re not a Shudder subscriber yet, the best part is that the streamer is offering a special discounted rate (50% off!) to first-timers who sign up before April 22. So hurry up and subscribe now…before Halloween is here for real.
Here are some of the highlights of Shudder’s original and exclusive programming for April:
Creepshow, Season 2 – Premieres April 1 (Shudder Original Series)
The acclaimed anthology series created by Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), based on the classic 1982 film from writer Stephen King and director George A. Romero, returns for a second season of scary and often hilarious tales of terror — a horror comic come to life. Monsters, murderers and supernatural apparitions will haunt a whole new slew of guest stars including Kevin Dillon, Josh McDermitt, Keith David, Molly Ringwald, Barbara Crampton, Justin Long and more, with new episodes premiering every Thursday.
The Power – Premieres April 8 (Shudder Exclusive Film)
In the tradition of classic British ghost stories comes this tale of terror set in London in the mid ‘70s. With the miners’ strikes resulting in electrical blackouts, a young nurse working a new job in a dilapidated hospital is plunged into darkness, and she’s pretty sure there’s a malevolent presence in there with her. Corinna Faith directs this Shudder exclusive starring Sanditon’s Rose Williams.
The Banishing – Premieres April 15 (Shudder Original Film)
British ghostliness abounds in this period haunted house movie which impressed critics when it screened at London’s FrightFest. Jessica Brown Findlay stars as a formerly “fallen” woman who moves into a sinister manor with her daughter and Vicar husband only to discover there are dark secrets within. John Lynch and Sean Harris provide strong support in this chiller from Triangle and Severance director Chris Smith.
The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs – Premieres April 16 (Shudder Original Series)
The world’s foremost expert on drive-in movies will be back for a third season of his wildly popular series, presenting horror double features as only he can pick them. Of course, Joe Bob will also give his thoughts on the films, their histories and their context and placement in horror movie history. Expect guests and other surprises too.
2021 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards – Premieres April 18 at 8pm ET/5pm PT (Exclusive Event)
Oscars: Schmoscars. The only awards horror hounds need are these top accolades from genre bible Fangoria. Shudder has partnered with Fango to stream this exclusive event which celebrates the greatest and goriest. Actor David Dastmalchian (Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and soon to be seen as Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad) hosts the awards. This year’s nominees include The Invisible Man, Freaky, Relic, and Possessor.
In Search of Darkness: Part II – Premieres April 26 (Shudder Exclusive Documentary)
Shudder’s epic documentary on 1980s horror cinema, In Search of Darkness, was such a hit that a sequel was deemed necessary. This one — more than four hours in length like its predecessor — dives even deeper into a crucial decade in the history of the genre, featuring interviews with icons like Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Nancy Allen (Dressed to Kill), Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), and special effects legend Tom Savini (Friday the 13th), along with many new and returning faces.
In addition to all its original and exclusive programming, Shudder is adding a slew of great horror films both vintage and recent to its already impressive library. Among the highlights are:
Night of the Lepus (1972) – April 1
One of those classic cult films so “bad” that it ends up being “good,” this shocker focuses on Arizona ranchers who are trying to curb a population explosion of wild rabbits and end up instead with a swarm of giant, man-eating bunnies. Stuart Whitman, Janet Leigh (Psycho) and DeForest Kelley (Star Trek’s Dr. McCoy) are all on hand to battle the carnivorous cottontails.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) – April 1
Leatherface and his twisted family are back in this delirious sequel that plays things more for laughs than the original, but is still as gloriously insane. Directed again by Tobe Hooper, this one finds the cannibalistic Sawyer family holed up in the grounds of an abandoned amusement park, where they torment anyone who comes within their reach.
The Val Lewton Collection – April 2
Producer Val Lewton was a master of psychological horror — where what was unseen was more frightening than anything else — and Shudder is now showing seven of his classic, highly influential films: Cat People (1942), I Walked With A Zombie (1943), The Leopard Man (1943), The Seventh Victim (1943), Curse of the Cat People (1944), The Body Snatcher (1945) and Isle of the Dead (1945).
Alex de la Iglesia Double Feature – April 12
The twisted Spanish genius behind HBO Max’s recent series 30 Coins brings two of his early classics to Shudder: The Day of the Beast (a.k.a. El día de la Bestia, 1995), in which a priest, TV psychic and death metal record store clerk battle Satan and stave off the Apocalypse, and Dance with the Devil (a.k.a. Perdita Durango, 1997), in which Rosie Perez and Javier Bardem are a degenerate couple who deal in human sacrifices, kidnapping, murder and fetus trafficking.
The Stepfather (1987) – April 19
Directed by Joseph Ruben (The Good Son) and written by famed crime novelist Donald Westlake, this cult classic thriller stars Terry O’Quinn (Lost’s John Locke) as a serial killer who infiltrates himself into families, murders them, then changes his identity before moving on to his next target. Only this time, his new stepdaughter is suspicious of just who “Jerry Blake” really is.
Housebound (2014) – April 19
Imagine being stuck at home for months on end… Ok but imagine being stuck inside at your family home with your mum who is convinced there’s a ghost living there with you. This New Zealand horror comedy sees a young woman on house arrest start to believe her superstitious mother might actually be onto something – it’s the perfect mix of funny and scary and is packed with surprises.
The Similars (2015) – April 26
Eight strangers trapped at a bus depot on a rainy night start experiencing a very odd phenomenon in this excellent Mexican sci-fi horror which plays like an extended episode of The Twilight Zone. It’s weird, existential and black and white and has a wicked sense of humour along with a feeling of mounting dread. A hidden gem and an absolute must-watch.
Horror Express (1972) – April 29
Horror legends Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing star along with Telly Savalas in this fast-moving, eerie sci-fi/horror hybrid in which rival scientists and a crazed Russian captain attempt to defeat an ancient, mind-absorbing alien aboard the Trans-Siberian Express. This Spanish gem is one of the more underrated, underseen classics of 1970s Eurohorror, with an original premise and great work from its iconic stars.
Here’s the full Shudder “Halfway to Halloween” lineup for April:

Joining Sports Team for D2D’s 2021 edition, are British alternative rock band, PALACE. With two albums under their belt and sold out tours at home & abroad, the London trio will be bringing their revered, shimmering indie rock to D2D. Their anticipated latest EP Someday, Somewhere was released in October and builds on the beautiful sound and image they have curated over the previous 6 years, lending promise to atmospheric live performances ahead.
Dublin 4-piece GIRL BAND will also be showcasing their tremendous live reputation in Bristol and Nottingham this September. Highly regarded and renowned for their genre-defying cataclysmic noise and infamously ferocious shows, a taste of which can be heard on their 2020 Live at Vicar Street release, but will really need to be seen first-hand to be believed.
DO NOTHING return to Dot To Dot Festival for 2021. Since emerging through 2018 & 2019, and with debut EP Zero Dollar Bill released in 2020, the Nottingham band have fast become one of the UK music scene’s most exciting prospects; with frontman Chris Bailey’s acerbic & quick-witted lyricism, their driven post-punk-meets-Talking-Heads sound, and a formidable reputation for exquisite live shows. 2021 has already seen the 4-piece release 2 singles in anticipation of their second EP, Glueland, expected March 12th.
Elsewhere on the D2D 2021 line up is genre-bending rap artist, SAM WISE. A member of cult London rap crew, House of Pharaohs, who name Frank Ocean among their fans. The Kennington native has also notably featured on tracks by the likes of Octavian, winner of BBC Sound of 2019, as well as building a solid reputation that is entirely his own through the release of his mixtape, Sorry You Were Saying, showcasing his witty storytelling, impeccable flows and fluid approach to genre and tone.
South-East London collective STEAM DOWN will bring their energetic live show to Bristol and Nottingham. Since forming back in 2007, Steam Down have received two Jazz FM awards, which include ‘Live Experience of the Year Award’ and ‘The Innovation Award’; accolades that clearly emphasise the impact and importance they’ve had on the UK’s flourishing jazz scene throughout the decade.
OSCAR LANG will bring his ever-growing, genre-crossing back catalogue to Bristol and Nottingham this autumn, showing no sign of slowing down following the release of two EPs and one album in 2020. Also fresh from a new release; their debut album, Speed Kills, London’s loudest breakout band CHUBBY AND THE GANG are certain to make an impression at Dot To Dot this year, if the 28 minutes of the album itself are anything to go by. The unruly punk energy and hardcore kid sensibilities displayed throughout the record are guaranteed mosh pit starters that will have crowds spilling pints and screaming gang vocals back at them.
Also on board are minimalist rock band YARD ACT who have been gradually dropping proto-punk/post-punk infused singles since mid-2020, with just a handful of singles and a handful of gigs, they have already earned themselves a tip as “one to watch” from The Guardian back in August. Likewise, self-described ‘dream pop trip hop’ three-piece, DRUG STORE ROMEOS’ appearance at Dot To Dot will certainly be one to catch, after being named for Annie Mac’s AMP London emerging artist series in 2020 and generating further buzz with the release of three singles during the year.
Singer-songwriter AARON SMITH has amassed 8 million+ Spotify streams of his sincere and communicative songs since growing up in the small Scottish town of Polmont, and joins the Dot To Dot bill, as does Birmingham-based rapper KOFI STONE, whose debut album, released in 2019, included features from Loyle Carner, Maverick Sabre and Ady Suleiman, and saw him truly arrive as one of the most exciting rappers on the UK hip-hop scene, thanks to his soulful and introspective flow. New Zealander MOLLY PAYTON will bring her powerful voice and the melancholic vulnerability of her songs to the festival; a relative newcomer, Payton released several attention-grabbing singles throughout 2020, culminating in two EPs.
British R&B and trap artist S-X is set to perform, having released an impressive three LPs since 2018, as well as gaining notoriety through working with numerous artists as a record producer, including YouTube star KSI, who he occasionally joins on Celebrity Gogglebox, and with a debut album on the way LOW ISLAND will be at Dot To Dot this September, bringing both uplifting electronica and intimate ballads to crowds at the multi-venue metropolitan festival.
Dot To Dot Festival prides itself on seeking out the freshest emerging musical talent and 2021 is no exception, particularly with the appointment of Sports Team as headliners, a mere 3 years since they first played the festival. Dot To Dot organiser and Director of Live at DHP Family, Anton Lockwood, said: “After having to postpone our 2020 event, we couldn’t be happier to be announcing D2D 2021. We simply can’t wait to celebrate live music with some of the most exciting emerging acts this year – Dot To Dot has always been about seeing your new favourite band in the middle of the day and your favourite band as headliners. We’re sure Sports Team became a lot of people’s new favourite band when they played in a late afternoon, smaller stage slot 3 years ago, and having them as headliners now really demonstrates this approach and ethos.”
Completing the bill so far, and filling some of those smaller stage slots that this year’s headliners have graced in the past, are: Bristol-based, queer punk-trio, GRANDMAS HOUSE who combine a love of post-punk with surfy melodies; the unconventional songwriting and pop-leaning sensibilities of MOA MOA; Manchester-based post-punk trio LIINES; WALT DISCO, who draw influence from ‘80s post-punk legends and modern-day art-pop chic; The sweet bedroom pop of 18 year old TINYUMBRELLAS; Crouch End quintet, SAD BOYS CLUB, with their emotive and ambitious indie-pop sound; JOEY MAXWELL, whose bedroom pop is R&B infused and layered with blunt lyricism; Space-rock five-piece, finding romance and humour in everyday life, JUNODREAM; LIZZIE REID and her songs of love, loss and heartbreak from Glasgow; the atmospheric soundscapes of epic proportions created by ELLYSSE MASON; the amorphous creative entity that is FOLLY GROUP, encompassing a group of friends whose practice spans various disciplines; Full-time busker turned indie tastemaker favourite, TAYO SOUND; the macabre stories, told over ear shredding guitar and rattling drums of WYCH ELM; Plus many more still to be announced.
Tickets for Dot To Dot are priced from £25 and available now through alt. tickets: https://bit.ly/3syZyKX

With the announcement of the government’s roadmap detailing plans to lift social distancing restrictions by 21 June, we are so excited to be able to bring D2D back to the streets of Bristol and Nottingham in September this year. We’ll be working really hard to ensure we can deliver the Dot To Dot that we all know and love in the most safe and enjoyable way possible. Should there be any changes to government guidelines which cause us to reschedule or postpone the festival, rest assured your tickets will be valid for the new date or refunds will be available.
Subscribe to Dot To Dot’s social media pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as online at www.dottodotfestival.co.uk to stay up to date on the latest line up announcements and to keep yourself in the loop for all things Dot To Dot.

15 Oct 2020 Germany’s first 3D-printed home
Germany’s first 3D-printed house is located in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Beckum. The two-storey, 160 m2 single-family home is currently under construction.
The 3D printing process has already been applied to the walls of the house. A nozzle applies special concrete in layers. The print head moves over three axes on a fixed frame and is controlled by just two people.
It takes just five minutes to print one square meter of a double-shelled wall. This innovative technology saves more than time compared to conventional construction methods; it also significantly reduces resources and allows for greater freedom in building design.
Viessmann heating, cooling and ventilation products have been selected for this home by PERI GmbH, one of the world’s leading suppliers of formwork and scaffolding systems, as well as civil engineering solutions. When completed, the first home will be heated and cooled by a high-efficiency Vitocal 200-S air/water heat pump and ventilated by the Vitovent 300-W ventilation system.
The temperature will be perfectly regulated all year round. The heat pump is highly efficient with a COP (coefficient of performance) of up to 5.0 (EN 14511 at A7/W35°C) and has an energy efficiency rating of A++.
The new Vitoset heat pump-hybrid cylinder WPU 300/100L will be installed as a heating buffer and DHW cylinder. The hybrid cylinder solution saves a lot of space since it consists of one 300-litre enamel DHW cylinder and a 100-litre buffer cylinder. The cylinder is delivered in one piece and is completely insulated.
Fresh, clean, and especially germ-free ambient air is more important than ever in times of Covid-19, and so the Vitovent 300-W central home ventilation system will also be installed in Germany’s first 3D-printed house. This quiet ventilation system is particularly quiet and compact and recovers up to 92 per cent of the heat from extracted air during the cold weather, saving heating costs. In combination with the Vitocal 200-S heat pump, the ventilation can be conveniently controlled using the free ViCare app on a smartphone.
PERI GmbH expects 3D printing to gain in importance in the next few years, and additional residential projects are already in preparation.
With a turnover of EUR 1,685 million in 2019, PERI is one of the largest global manufacturers and suppliers of shuttering and scaffolding systems. With more than 9,500 employees, over 60 subsidiaries and more than 160 warehouses, the family business with its headquarters in Weißenhorn, Germany serves its customers with innovative system equipment and comprehensive services for shuttering and scaffolding technology.

From 7 1/2 to 9 wrote 3 pages to Mrs B— (Barlow)  “Your message to myself made me smile — your love but will not write, as you have nothing particular to say, and my aunt’s writing is the same thing, for you have been much enjoyed since your return — to me my aunt’s writing is not the same thing — you can nothing to say that is not particular in interest — you must have something to say, because you must do and be done by; and everything so done by yourself, or (as touching you) by others in a matter of concern and interest to me — I can easily believe, you have been much enjoyed; but you have not been more so than I have been, or than I am; nor have you been occupied in a manner less compatible with friendly sophistry chit-chat than I — you are in Paris where there is my aunt, and where all around you, from being more or less known to me, had more or less in it to interest me — here am I where you know not pensive or thinking, where there is no éclat to court the attention of the stranger and the far-away, and where all their interest must be confined within the pretty sphere of myself — alas! Maria, and even that self must be less interesting to you now, there formally — at all rates, shall not the worth I used to have on the score of agreeableness, or the power of making myself agreeable — my mind is occupied with rude and rusty matters —  this all about me that maybe unchanged is that which beats within, and by some subtile compensating principle, varies not from absence time, or circumstance — I write not because I have something particular to say — or because I have leisure I know not what to do with — but because I cannot believe that you will not be glad even at the sight of my hand-writing, and that be that writing really worthless as it may, let it but be kindly affectionate, and you at least will value it — your message to my aunt delighted at her so excellent and admirable account of herself” — will therefore taken my time and do all I am about as well as I can — my mind as it were made up to spend knowledge here — will write in a few days — will write now if I can  —  if I do not my aunt will know I cannot — not to fall between 2 stools — wish Dr. T—Tupper would or could give a decided answer — well where we are — must not be turned out — If we move, Mrs B— Barlow will give my aunt all necessary assistance — if she cannot conveniently furnish herself with money, I can send it over — ask her to write if but a few lines — alltogether a very kind letter
breakfast at 9 20/60 in 23 minutes before and 1/4 hour after write the above of today - the extract contains 6 lines of p. 1 and all but 6 lines of p. 2 of my letter to Mrs. B— (Barlow) (Madame Madame Barlow Rue des Champs Elysées No. 6 Paris) sent by Jane at 10 20/60 — Letter from Mr John Birmingham commissioner, Old Ship Hotel Dover — dated November 20 having that morning received my letter “Plate on entering France is subject to a deposit of 44 Francs for every 2 lbs. weight (French) — that deposit is returned if the plate be exported within 3 years — I think that famed living in France very frequently apply to the Directeur general des Douanes for a remission of this deposit, and that their request is very generally granted” —
off to church at 10 35/60 — only 3 or 4 minutes too late — the vicar did all the duty — preached 40 minutes from 1 Samuel vi 30 the people threatened to stone David but he encouraged himself in the lord — a good sermon showing that the best of us are frail — so were Abraham, Moses, and David — a particular history of the latter’s joining himself with Achish —
In returning went down across the end of Trough of Bolland into my Godley field - the fence all along poor - then across the fields into the walk — sauntered up and down there — It is inconsistent to make a regular shrubbery there —  to thorn and bush-wood up the bank may not do so well as I fancied last night —  this place (Lower brook Ing part of the walk) is difficult to manage — know not what to do at the bottom of the Calfcroft — it and had not be too much blocked up — ’tis wet — Common laurels to be put near? or a weeping willow or ditto elm? came in at 3 50/60 —
from 4 to 6 25/60 copied out from Cronhelm (Entire volume E pages 97 and 98) the further explanation of his new method of book keeping contrasted with the modern Italian method — Dinner at 8 1/2 no time to dress — expected Holt this afternoon about the Dr D— coals, but he did not come — Martha brought me this afternoon a parcel from Mrs William Priestley which arrived at Lightcliffe late last night from Nottingham which Mrs P— Priestley good enough to get me Becher’s tables and calculations related Friendly society (Newark 1825) and Becher’s constitution of Friendly societies London 1828. and his antipauper system 1828 all published for the benefit of the Southwell Friendly Institution: and sold by W. Thousands gather in Britain to support US George Floyd protests
Anti-racism demonstrators defy lockdown in London, Cardiff and ManchesterProtesters in London, Cardiff and Manchester gathered on Sunday in solidarity with demonstrations in the United States that were sparked by the death of George Floyd.
In London, demonstrators first gathered in Trafalgar Square, chanting “No justice, no peace”. What appeared to be many thousands then made their way through Whitehall past Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament, then over the Thames to the enormous and moated US embassy at Nine Elms in Battersea.
Defying the ban on mass public gatherings because of the coronavirus lockdown, the demonstrators held cardboard placards reading Justice for George Floyd, Black Lives Matter, White Silence is Compliance and Rest in Power.
The Metropolitan police said they had made five arrests outside the US embassy, three for violations of the coronavirus lockdown guidelines and two for assault on police. A statement from the force said: “Those arrested are aged between 17-25 years. All have been taken into police custody.”
In updates late on Sunday, the Met said a total of 23 people had been arrested during the London protests.
Traffic was brought to a standstill as protesters crossed Lambeth Bridge, many chanting “I can’t breathe” – a reference to Floyd’s desperate plea as a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck.
Protesters also made their way to Grenfell Tower in west London. One marcher wrote Black Lives Matter on the memorial at the base of the tower block, as others watched on in silence before applauding as they finished.
In Cardiff, hundreds of protesters gathered peacefully by the walls of the castle, with banners including one that read: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
Mariyah Zaman, a creative writing and media graduate, tweeted that it was a short, socially distant demonstration. “Racism is not an American issue, it’s a humanitarian issue. It exists here and it is very much apparent in Wales as the speakers today recalled.”
One protester, Donna Ali, told the BBC: “If you’re silent, you’re not going to change anything. It’s something we’ve experienced for many years, whether it’s in the US or the UK.
“It’s really heart-breaking that people can’t see past the colour of skin.”
In Manchester, protesters marched through the city centre, chanting “Black Lives Matter”, before gathering at 1pm in St Peter’s Square, where they knelt in tribute to Floyd.
The London protest was watched by Sally Hitchiner, an associate vicar at St Martin-in-the-Fields church on Trafalgar Square. She told PA Media: “I’m very sympathetic to the issue but also surprised to see the strength of emotion that has gathered people together.
“It’s showing there are people in the UK who care passionately about the situation in the US. Clearly they’re not following lockdown and social distancing, but I think there’s a huge amount of passion there and that’s overriding their concerns.
“It’s an issue that requires passion but at the same time there’s a huge amount of risk in what they’re doing.”
