I’m going with 10 All Time Classics from the Captain America (MCU) fandom. I mean, they’re all classics to me, at least. In no particular order:
1. This, You Protect by owlet
First installment in the Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series, which are all amazing. It’s a “Bucky escaping Hydra and rebuilding his sense of self” fic, which he does while spying on Steve. With eventual Avengers Family and a lovely cast of OCs bonding with Bucky in the meantime. It has a very distinctive perspective and writing style; Bucky’s in constant internal (and sometimes accidentally external) dialogue with himself, making it hilarious and tragic all at the same time. I love it. I’ve recently been getting into The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells and this Bucky has a similar sassy-but-vulnerable vibe? Read this if you like that, anyway.
2. The One Who Knows by Dira Sudis (dsudis)
This is a Political Animals AU, in that no-powers Steve is inserted into the Political Animals world and Bucky is TJ. Discusses being outed and depression but is ultimately hopeful. The author is one of my all time faves and has written lots of great stories for this and many other fandoms.
3. Blue Scales by chaya
Steve is a merman AU. He’s still Captain America, though. It’s crack with heart, I love it.
Best line: “May your scales and your love story be our weird secret forever.”
4. Our Lingering Frost by eyres
AU where Bucky is rescued from Hydra in the 50s (?) and so is around for Steve to be found.
5. Assets Out of Containment by follow_the_sun
It’s a classic to *me*, OK? Bucky goes undercover at Jurassic World just as that movie’s plot kicks off. They’re Hydra dinosaurs! It’s just great. Also has a podfic and crossovers with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
6. Not Easily Conquered (series) by dropdeaddream and WhatAreFears
Some of the greatest fanfiction I’ve ever read, the whole series is epic. Anyway, it’s a “Steve doesn’t go into the ice” AU with added queer angst when (never sent) love letters from Bucky resurface. I particularly like the second installment in the series The Thirteen Letters, which are just Bucky’s letters and are insanely well-written.
7. to memory now I can’t recall by Etharei
Time travel AU! Featuring post-CATWS Bucky accidentally switching places with CATFA era Bucky.
8. If Wishing Made It So by Leveragehunters (Monkeygreen)
Genie!Bucky AU! This author is great at writing AUs with fantasy/genre elements, it was hard to choose. They’ve also written an excellent werewolf!Steve AU and a horse!Steve AU that I really love.
9. Into That Good Night by Nonymos
An Interstellar AU! Very angsty and tragic but with an eventual happy ending.
10. Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square by Speranza
Speranza must be one of the best writers in the fandom, so it was hard to pick just one of their fics. Other strong contenders were All the Angels and the Saints and The Fifties, so check those out too! But this one has a special place in my heart. Steve, Tony and Natasha accidentally time travel to WW2 London, leading to an accidental run-in with CATFA-era Bucky. The author does tragic and romantic time travel tropes so well, but with a happy ending.
I now realise that most of these are AUs, so here’s a bonus rec for a non-AU in-universe story that’s severely underrated and deserves more love:
+1
Heart, Have No Pity on this House of Bone by Sena
This story follows Bucky in-action in the Pacific Theatre. It’s very well written and, from what I can tell, well researched. Steve only appears in Bucky’s imagination and the story focuses on the horrors of war rather than romance, but it’s gripping! And it explores unrequited love, being closeted and period-typical homophobia, which I also enjoyed. I’m still holding out hope for a sequel.

I love the headcanon that none of the Bats are supers, but over time? Gotham is slowly messing them up, one by one.
Bruce smiles at Clark one day in the Cave, and his eyes reflect the light back like a wolf's
Jason suddenly has tiny fangs, but nobody has the nerve to mention it
Alfred literally doesn't die
Dick can jump higher and faster than ever before, but barely notices it
Tim is awake for three days straight and doesn't blink
They're all subtly, but noticeably different. Gotham-blessed, or cursed, or something in between.

Fucking cruella. You're going to cite fucking Cruella as an example of bad costuming?!? Because why? it's not sparkly enough for you????
You're out here saying Jenny Beavan, three time oscar winner 10 times oscar nominee (one of those wins was for cruela and it was fucking deserved) is bad at her job now?!
Not only is the specific dress you cite from Cruella far more structurally complex than the 2000 one, it's also specifically a dress intended to look like it was made quickly from scrap fabric for plot reasons, and it's on screen for all of 5 minutes because it's one of 54 individual costumes just for that one character. That doesn't include any of the villains costumes, any side characters, or any of the costumes which only appear on mannequins because this is a film about the fashion industry and almost every shot is filled with incredible clothing including as part of the set dressing. Most of which, including that dress you're shitting on, are handmade from scratch.
you are seriously trying to claim THIS
Tumblr media
(every single aspect of this costume is handmade including the leather jacket because jenny beavan couldn't find one the exact perfect shape for her vision. the petals on the skirt are hand sewn. there are more than 5,000 of them. the epaulettes alone are minature works of art. it's on screen for a couple of minutes as part of a montage that just consists of cruella showing off amazing outfits she's designed and every one of them is a work of art)
is an example of bad lazy costuming?
the costumes on display at the national costume institute?
the other examples in the post are also bad (ever after and cinderella are not in any way comparable, that's like saying pride and prejudice has more historically accurate costumes than bridget jones, just because they have the same vague source material does not mean the settings aesthetic or style are even vaguely connected. the costumes in cinderella aren't amazing, but they're not bad because they don't look like what people wore in 14th century florence!) (and even a TV show with the budget of rings of power is never going to have anything close to the time and budget of a major studio blockbuster, it's simply not a fair comparison. also there has literally never been a film like the LOTR trillogy and there probably never will be again, it's not an example of how hollywood used to be it's an example of how one time, by some miracle, every single aspect of production came together perfectly for that one shoot).
also maybe you did mean the single scene in avengers endgame, but I keep seeing people claiming black panther II shouldn't even have been nominated for best costumes, let alone won (a win Ruth Carter fully deserved) because 'all of marvel's costumes are cgi', so this is the obligatory reminder that no, they're not, they were cg for one scene of one movie, and it was really stupid, but it is not a recurring aspect of hollywood or the mcu, it was the result of the specifically rushed filming timeline of that one movie.
lack of pre-production is a problem across the industry, especially in major hollywood studios, and costume design is one of the parts getting hit by that. lack of unions are a feature but not in the way op is insinuating or the way most people reblogging this probably think.
None of these costumes are the result of costume design being outsourced to the lowest bidder, or replaced with cgi, or any of that nonsense.
It's a result of shortening filming schedules meaning the preproduction time used for stuff like costume manufacture and sourcing is getting reduced and reduced. While a design union might help because they could try and push for mandatory minimum prep time, this crunch is affecting every part of film making, including a bunch of jobs which are unionised, so it definitely wouldn't be the magic pill y'all seem to think.
and, and i cannot stress this enough, cruella is literally one of the best costumed movies of all time.
the decrease in costuming quality over the last 20 years has been soooo precipitous & nauseating. i’m not even talking abt marvel’s cg supersuits or anything this time, look at the fabric quality, structure, layering, character, and craftsmanship of older costumes in 102 dalmations (2000) vs cruella (2021)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ever after (1998) vs cinderella (2021)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lord of the rings (2001-2003) vs the rings of power (2022)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this trend should upset you not just because it looks cheap, but because it suggests a strong anti-art and anti-labor movement in film and tv making. don’t forget costumers are unionized

This is something I'm seeing more and more on AO3 that I'd never seen when I first got into fandom stuff, so I wanted to find out how you all feel about it.
What are your thoughts about seeing posted fanfiction that isn't commissioned, where the creator says that they have never read/watched the source material? For example, someone putting out a fanfic for a show they've never watched that includes the tag Author Has Never Seen Suchandsuch.

I respect the fandom dedication to analysis and theory crafting but when it comes to kids shows some of y'all are putting on wetsuits and scuba gear to swim in a rock pool and while I hope you find some cool sea creatures it is really Not That Deep

Fanfic tiktok is wild... I see so many people saying shit like "I could never read anything below 60k!!", or "What story can you even tell in under 5k words?" or "A oneshot below 10k isn't even a story!" or "I always filter completed fics by 100k< only!"
And I'm like...
A) which fandoms are you reading fics for where you have this kind of offerings on the regular?
B) have you heard of short stories? If you truly think every story NEEDS to be longform to connect with people, I sincerely feel sorry for you.
C) Average novel length is between 50k to 100k. I'm sorry, but CONSISTENTLY demanding fic writers to push out fics of that length is insane. Just think about it: YOU DEMAND AUTHORS TO PUT OUT FICS THAT COMPARE TO COMMERCIAL NOVELS IN LENGTH (AND QUALITY) AS A BASELINE.
Yall are wilding.

So UK politics is having a very normal one this week.
Liz Truss claims the reason her premiership had less staying power than lettuce is because Rishi Sunak is an agent of the deep state leading a conspiracy against her
And Dominic Cummings claims "trans doesn't exist" and trans people can be "cured" by... reading Dostoyevsky. No, no one knows why Dostoyevsky. No word yet on if he believes other 19th century Russian writers also work.

Potential New Bracket
Forcing myself to write TW fic while I'm deep in the weeds of a DMC hyperfixation has resulted in exactly one bit of cross-pollination, and that's an urge to run a 'most traumatised fictional character' bracket. ActiBlizz refuses to release their 'diversity tool' so I can't find out if Rey is more female than Luke is old (I promise that makes sense if you were online for the right 5 minutes a few years ago lmao) but I could concievably find out if Derek Hale is more orphaned than Vergil Sparda is mind controlled.
But I can't decide if that would just get depressing and/or invite the worst people in fandom to take up residence in my inbox, so I'm running a poll
Obviously if I did go ahead with it I'd take precautions like thorough trigger warnings and putting propaganda below a cut, I wouldn't just dump these horrific life stories onto your dash.
And hopefully equally obviously, RPF fandoms would be excluded, we're not turning anyone's real life suffering into a fun poll.
Please reblog to get a wider sample, and refrain from being dicks in the tags/comments. Also if someone already has/is doing this and I missed it, drop a comment to let me know!

I can think of a dozen reasons I could be a clone, most of which aren't especially sinister. We've been working on human cloning for decades. Finding out your mum had a fucked up IVF doctor or a dodgy adoption agency really not that weird, and tells you very little about your life. Really not that different than finding out you had a twin.
Finding out you're a robot means someone is making human-passing robots that age and have to go to the dentist and experience stress and grief and potentially mental illness. There's no non sinister explanation for that! Also it makes it much more likely that your parents knew and never told you, and not telling you you're a robot is way more fucked up than not telling you you were adopted. Also also chances that whatever sinister organisation created you is trying to hunt you down and/or has been watching you this whole time is infinitely more likely with this one. If the clone lab wants to hunt you down it might just be to check you were experiencing any illnesses as you aged, so they know if human cloning if genuinely viable. If the robot engineers track you down it's probably to silence you.
Also again, I cannot stress this enough, if you're a robot someone made a robot that has to go to the dentist and that's sooo fucked up

To clarify, @am-i-the-asshole-official would speculating that the poster might be being disingenuous about who in the situation they are (e.g. post is written from the perspective of person a, but would make more sense if they're person b pretending to be a) counted as disbelieving the story? Because I can see arguments in both directions - it is engaging with that post rather than dismissing it out of hand, but it's also disbelieving what people are saying, you know?
"add to rules" anon here, i just meant throw it in the faq or maybe pinned. as long as it's written down somewhere it becomes entirely their fault if they decide to not read that and get themselves banned
Y'know what, that sounds reasonable enough, added it to the faq. If people don't read it after I've said to this many times, on their own head be it

This is such an interesting one, because the question isn't actually about Corvo.
Would Corvo investigate? 100% yes. Would he solve it by himself? In no possible world I love the guy but he couldn't solve the crown killer murders and that was way less weird and esoteric than the Kira murders, although he does get some points for the fact that regardless of which universe this happened in he'd probably known Light's dad. Does he die? Also yes, he's a very public figure and also pretty shit at secret identities.
However
He's also the Outsider's favourite toy, and the Outsider is pretty close to omniscient. So the real question becomes:
Would the God of Void care enough to intervene? Is there a way in which Light could piss of Whale Satan enough that he decides he wants this kid dead more than he wants to watch the chaos he sows?
And the answer is yes because he'd fucking hate Ryuk.
Therefore, Corvo can solve the murders not through his own skill but through being the only person who picks up the Outsider's calls
Also it would be very funny to see Kira's face when he discovers that Corvo can summon swarms of starving rats from nowhere, to be honestly I think you should put him on the squad just for that
