Birds look funny when you look at them from the front. This pair of Common Grackles were carved by Bob Spear in 1992. They can be seen from all angles when visiting the Museum. #WoodCarving #BirdCarving #BobSpearCarving #CommonGrackle #VermontMuseum (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg5mBG3OsKd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thank you to all the volunteers who joined us on Sunday. It was a “bee-u-tiful” day! In addition to trailwork, prepping for programs, and stocking the gift shop, they moved truckloads of wood chips! Thank you also to those who weren’t on-site Sunday but have helped the museum in previous days/weeks as we prepared for opening day. The museum is officially open for our 36th year! Stop by Wednesday-Sunday from 10-4. #gratitude #volunteer #VermontMuseum #ThankYou #WorkingTogether #WhereNaturalHistoryMeetsArt (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdF8_oqO-ZL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Lori Hinrichsen created this collage on paper in 2021 for our “Expanding Voices: Perspectives on Birding” art show. “Nest (view from inside out)” is displayed along with a second piece, “Across the Miles (View From Outside In).” The two pieces reflect one view from inside looking out, and the other from the outside looking in. “The window became symbolic in so many ways. My perch. The view from my Window prompted a whole series of artwork. The artworks in this show are part of that series and are my perspectives. Whether I am on my couch or in my kayak I take great joy in observing g the natural world. Engaging in this daily practice of observation has provided hope and possibilities of what can be.” - Lori Hinrichsen To see more of Lori’s work see her website lorihinrichsen.com The exhibit will be up through the end of this month, and the Museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 10-4. #FeaturedArtist #ExpandingVoices #PerspectivesOnBirding #BirdsOfVermontMuseum #VermontArt #VermontArtist #VermontMuseum #ArtExhibition #Nest (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVGEIY6r3B3/?utm_medium=tumblr

Sarah Rosedahl (@srosedahl) created this watercolor “Smothered” for our current exhibit “Expanding Voices: perspectives on birding.” Her painting for this show reflects her thoughts on a bird’s perspective, and is a reflection on loving our Snowy Owls to death. From her artist statement: “The pandemic encouraged more people to get outside, and for some, to pursue bird watching and bird photography as a new interest or hobby. The new interest is great, but what about the impact on birds if they are watched too closely or by too many people?” #FeaturedArtist #ExpandingVoices #PerspectivesOnBirding #BirdsOfVermontMuseum #VermontArt #VermontArtist #watercolor #SnowyOwl #VermontMuseum (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUIPwP_ro1r/?utm_medium=tumblr

It is #InternationalVultureAwarenessDay. Vultures are often judged by their looks, and to some they aren’t as beautiful as other birds. To others, their looks simply highlight some of their amazing adaptations. Did you know the scientific name for the Turkey Vulture is Cathartes aura meaning ‘golden purifier’ perhaps due to their ability to clean up their environment. This carving was created by Bob Spear in 1999, and took him almost 120 hours! #WoodCarving #TurkeyVulture #VermontMuseum #LearnAboutBirds (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTag7sfvA-F/?utm_medium=tumblr

Katherine Guttman (@stitchycrow) created “Recognition” with embroidery thread and seed beads on cotton. The events of 2020 led her to dive deep into history as she was “increasingly curious as to how we dealt with similar plagues.” To see the rest of the piece, visit the Museum between now and October 31. #VermontMuseum #ArtExhibit #ArtThatTellsAStory #FeaturedArtist #ExpandingVoices #PerspectivesOnBirding #BirdsOfVermontMuseum #VermontArt #VermontArtist (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSRv2hWLSdP/?utm_medium=tumblr

This year has been one of the worst outbreaks of Gypsy Moths in decades. These invasive insects were introduced to Massachusetts in 1869, and since then have been munching on leaves and defoliating trees spreading across the northeast, into southern Canada, and west through Michigan. The Black-billed Cuckoo is a bird known for eating these caterpillars. Many birds avoid eating these hairy caterpillars, but Black-billed Cuckoos are well-known for eating many of them, and they have a unique adaptation for dealing with these hairy insects. The hairs pierce the lining of the stomach and stay there. After eating many caterpillars the bird regurgitates the lining as a pellet, removing all the hairs from their body. The Black-Billed Cuckoo carving was created by Bob Spear in 1983, and it took him 143 hours. #BlackBilledCuckoo #coccyzuserythropthalmus #BirdFacts #BirdCarving #GypsyMoth #BirdFood #BobSpearCarving #VermontMuseum (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRCDhLQBhgY/?utm_medium=tumblr

Common Mergansers are moving north. Although some are seen throughout the winter, in general, they are one of the first species of waterfowl returning to, or migrating through, Vermont. Some birds stay and breed here, while many others continue their migration north. This species breeds through the northern boreal and mixed forests across the northern United States and Canada. This carving was created by Dick Allen, and the mural in the background was painted by a Libby Davidson. #CommonMerganser #mergusmerganser #SpringMigration. #VTBirds #DuckCarving #WoodCarving #VTArtist #WoodCarving #VermontArtist #VermontMuseum (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMk9GYwhCIh/?igshid=1ru8j208vu3ip
