Say “hi” to the Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea)! Like other similar-hued birds, it doesn’t have a true blue pigment. Rather, its feathers refract blue light. (Only males come in shades of blue, while females are brown). The Indigo Bunting has a wide range and can be spotted across North America, down through Central and South America, and even into parts of the Caribbean! It prefers brushy habitats near the edge of a forest, where it snacks on seeds and insects. The Black Crowned Night heron is know to engage in bait fishing; luring or distracting fish by tossing edible or inedible buoyant objects into water within their striking range – a rare example of tool use among birds.. . . #natureisamazing #natureinspired #naturephotography #naturelover #naturegram #naturefacts #instafacts #instaknowledge #birdfacts #didyouknow #didyouknowfacts #birdphotography #birdphotographyindia #birdphotographersofindia #eye_for_nature #eye_spy_birds #nuts_about_birds #biodiversity #conservation #wetlands #rajasthantourism #incredibleindia . . . @birdphotographers_of_india @incredibleindia @tourismgoi @rajasthan_tourism @unbiodiversity (at Keoladeo Ghana National Park Area, Bharatpur) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co06z-wBsvK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In order to digest a fish whole, a bird requires a two-chambered stomach. The first chamber secretes acid, which helps break down bones and scales. The second (gizzard) grinds up pieces of food into much smaller pieces.

BOTD: Eurasian Bullfinch
Tumblr media

Eurasian Bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula)
In captivity, Eurasian Bullfinches can be taught to repeat beautiful songs, but in the wild, their songs are quiet and weak and only audible at close range. They are often overlooked, being fairly unobtrusive and quiet. The name 'Bullfinch' is said to describe their bull-like appearance with their thick, neck-less appearance and short bill.

I just witnessed two birds being Heimlich manoeuvred by a third bird and I can't find anything on the internet about this behaviour. The top had his wings wrapped around the bottom two, huddling them together, and he repeatedly got a little air then slammed the flat of his claw into their backs - both the bottom birds were noticeably spitting bits of food out their mouths with every hit. It didn't look like any bird sex I've seen but again, I cant find anything about birds practising the Heimlich on the net so if this is just the world we're living in lemme know, maybe they've always done this and I'm reading too much de lillo

Nothing to see here, just your average tree branch… or is it?🪵 Take a closer look and you might notice the Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus)! This master of disguise lives in parts of Central and South America and roosts on high perches, motionless. It has large bright yellow eyes that you’d think would draw a predator’s attention, but the bird has a workaround: it can close its peepers while staying aware of its surroundings, thanks to slits in its eyelids! At dusk, the nocturnal critter begins to feast on large insects like moths. A study of the peacock feathers, the scientists saw that the characteristic eyespots of peacocks are held together by microhooks while they wiggle and rattle their tails. This causes the surrounding filaments of the eyespots move along with the other feathers as the eyespot center remains still - eyespots then appear iridescent. . . #didyouknow #didyouknowfacts #didyouknowthat #instabird #instaknowledge #instafacts #birdfacts #naturefacts #natureinfocus #natureinspired #natgeobirds #natgeoindia #natgeo #canonphotography #biodiversity #conservation #nationalbird #delhincr #gurugram #gurgaon #whatsupgurgaon (at Bhondsi: The Historical Village) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqEycZThNjK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Birds have hollow bones, but not for the reason you might think. It’s not to make them lighter, but to help them breathe better. Their lungs extend into their bones, allowing them to get more oxygen for flying.

Our 2022 art exhibit “Fine Feathers: at play with structure and function” is on display until October 31. There will be an artist reception on July 14th from 3-5. Everyone is invited. This piece, “Barred Owlet” was created by artist Timothy Hoch. Young Barred Owls still have downy feathers on their head even as their adult wing and tail feathers have grown in. #FunFeatherFact… Supposedly Barred Owls have between 9000 and 10,000 feathers; although we are guessing that is an estimate, as we don’t know of anyone who has actually counted all of them. #FunNaturalistFact… Harriet Tubman used owl calls as a form of communication as she helped people escape slavery. More of Timothy’s work can be seen @achor-hochpaintings.com and/or on his website Anchor-HochPaintings.com #TimothyHochArtist #APainting#VermontArtist #vermontArt #FineFeathers #FeaturedArtist #FineFeathersArt #BirdsofVermontMuseum #BirdFact (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfhLwSPO73z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
