A rare Yellow-throated Warbler was seen on the shores of Lake Champlain during the first week of a December. It is a treat for birders to see this beautiful bird. Hopefully it has now headed south to find a more suitable wintering spot. This species typically spends the winter in the southern part of Florida, the southeastern part of Texas, and into Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean islands. This carving was created by Bob Spear in 1988 and took him 13 hours. #yellowthroatedwarbler #SetophagaDominica #VTBird #BirdCarving #BobSpearCarving #WildlifeArt #VermontArtist (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl6F0HWu7fA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today was the first in our series of Sunday morning bird walks. We meet at 7:00 and stroll around the property. Today we saw/heard 31 species. Although we did see and hear a Black-Throated Green Warbler; this picture was taken a few days ago by Mark Paul in another part of Vermont. To sign up for one of our bird walks please go to the calendar of events on our website. We ask that people sign up so we can keep the groups small, if there are a lot of sign ups we will add more walks! To see more of Mark Paul’s work go to markpaul.net or @markpaulnaturalist&photograoher #VTBirds #birdWalk #BlackthroatedGreenWarbler (at Vermont) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdTRy8POcRh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Kinglets are on the move, and have been seen numerous times this weekend in Huntington, VT. Golden-crowned Kinglets (pictured here) are year round residents in Vermont, and nests in spruce-fir or other conifer dominated forests. This bird was carved by Bob Spear in 1986, and took him 16 hours. #VTBirds #GoldenCrownedKinglet #RegulusSatrapa #BobSpearCarving #WoodCarving #BirdCarving #HuntingtonVT (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcbQzYkv9nF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Ruby- throated Hummingbirds are moving south. In preparation for migration these little birds can almost double their weight from their summer weight of about 3.5 grams. Although small, these birds are known for flying across the Gulf of Mexico (a 500 mile non-stop trip). In Vermont, the adult males typically leave first, while the juveniles and females remain longer, and a few can still be seen this time of year. 📷 @gmmawe #RubyThroatedHummingbird #Migration #Archilochuscolubris #VTBirds (at Vermont) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTpR0ZgLrmr/?utm_medium=tumblr

‘Common Nighthawks Dancing With The Moon’ by Summer Stratton (@sumstratt). The artist created this work with air dry clay, gouache paint, wood, and artificial sinew. This piece is part of ‘Expanding Voices: perspectives on Birding,’ the current art show at the Museum. The show is up through October 31, and Museum is open Wed-Sunday from 10-4. Common Nighthawks migrate through Vermont from mid-August to mid -September. They are long distance migrants and travel from Northern Canada to South America. There is a count station in the CT River Valley and over 7000 birds have been counted flying overhead in the last few weeks! #FeaturedArtist #ExpandingVoices #PerspectivesOnBirding #BirdsOfVermontMuseum #VermontArt #VTbirds #BirdFacts #BirdMigration #BirdArt #VermontArtist (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTaLZcvLYn1/?utm_medium=tumblr

Due to the mysterious bird illness impacting birds in the midwest and the eastern part of the country we removed our bird feeders a few weeks ago. Before taking them down, we spent time looking closely at the birds to ensure that we were not seeing any birds showing signs of the mysterious illness. In addition to studying them with binoculars, @jcg_wildlife photographed them, including this beautiful male Rose-breasted Grosbeak. #VTBirds #RoseBreastedGrosbeak (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRuHb8JrPrm/?utm_medium=tumblr

We have netting on all the windows to prevent bird collisions. The last few years the Great created Flycatchers have helped themselves to pieces of the netting for their nests. Great Crested Flycatchers sometimes use shed snake skins in their nests. We are hoping she likes these skins and leaves the netting intact. #GreatCrestedFlycatcher #VTBirds #NestingMaterial #SnakeSkin (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPJdOZoB74W/?utm_medium=tumblr

Common Mergansers are moving north. Although some are seen throughout the winter, in general, they are one of the first species of waterfowl returning to, or migrating through, Vermont. Some birds stay and breed here, while many others continue their migration north. This species breeds through the northern boreal and mixed forests across the northern United States and Canada. This carving was created by Dick Allen, and the mural in the background was painted by a Libby Davidson. #CommonMerganser #mergusmerganser #SpringMigration. #VTBirds #DuckCarving #WoodCarving #VTArtist #WoodCarving #VermontArtist #VermontMuseum (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMk9GYwhCIh/?igshid=1ru8j208vu3ip
