Steve knows you better than anyone else. It’s to be expected when you’ve been best friends for over five years. And still, knowing that he really gets you, knows how you’re feeling just from looking at you, stirs up the butterflies in your stomach and makes your heart pound in your chest. And no, it doesn’t have anything to do with the crush on Steve you’ve been harboring. Probably. Maybe. 

You’re at the diner with all of your friends on a rare occasion that everyone is home and accounted for, sitting at the other end of the table from Steve as you talk to Nancy about how college is going for her. You can feel a pair of eyes on you as you talk to her, and you know it’s Steve. It’s always Steve. 

In a lull of your conversation, you turn to take a sip of your drink and find Steve’s eyes still on you. His elbow is on the table in front of him, chin propped up in his hand as he looks at you, an involuntary flush crawling up his neck as your eyes meet. Still, he tilts his head slightly and raises his eyebrows; a silent ask of ‘you okay?’

Because it’s Steve, you know exactly what he’s asking, and you nod, your lips tugging up at one side as you try to ignore your rapid heart beat. He knows work has been killing you lately and that you’d had a rough day, going so far as to suggest the two of you skip the dinner if you weren’t feeling up to it. Of course you couldn’t miss this time with your friends, but you appreciate he’d asked, and was now — albeit silently — checking in on you. 

Nodding, Steve returns your smile easily, brushing a stray hair out of his face as he keeps his eyes trained on you for a few more seconds. Dustin is quick to grab his attention, though, snapping Steve out of his near trance-like state. As his eyes flick away, it’s like you’re brought back down to earth as well, a familiar fluttering feeling kicking up in your chest. 

“What was that about?” Nancy asks from beside you, a knowing smirk on her lips as she glances across the table to Steve and then back to you. 

“What?” you ask, glancing back at Nancy, feeling the heat of embarrassment again, “Nothing.” She gives you a disbelieving look, and you immediately feel flustered, “Nothing! I swear.”

“Yeah, okay,” she snorts, lifting her own drink to her lips to take a sip before changing the subject — some story about her boss at her new internship — and you’re thankful she doesn’t pry any more. What would you even say? That you’re in love with your best friend even though you’re almost positive he doesn’t feel the same way?

An hour later, and all of the kids have been picked up, leaving just the older group behind. You’ve left your spot at the opposite end of the table now that there are less of you, opting to settle into the one next to Steve. Nancy shoots you another knowing look as she does the same next to Jonathan, curling into his side. Ignoring her look, you give Steve a smile as you scoot in a bit closer. 

“Hey, babe,” he says softly, leaning back in his seat and extending the arm closest to you over the back of your chair. 

You can feel the warmth radiating from him through the back of your shirt and you subconsciously lean into his touch. Your cheek presses into your shoulder as you gaze up at him, “Hi, Stevie.”

Steve leans in so he can speak to you quietly, the tips of his fingers brushing over your shoulder lightly, “You still doing okay?”

“Mhm,” you nod, inching your chair closer to Steve’s so you can rest your head against his shoulder instead, “‘M tired, but happy to see everyone.” 

“Yeah?” he asks, and though you can’t see his face, you can hear the smile in his voice as he says, “I’m glad.” His hand closes around your upper arm to pull you into his side, thumb nudging underneath the hem of your sleeve to rub gentle circles into your skin.

It’s hard to participate in the conversation that your friends are having with how tired you are, as well as the weight of Steve’s hand on your arm, so you settle for leaning into Steve’s grasp. Your eyes flutter closed, and it’s only a matter of minutes before you doze off, asleep on Steve’s shoulder. He doesn’t notice right away, though his gentle touch is part of what lulls you to sleep; only aware of your soft, even breaths when Robin points it out, wiggling her eyebrows at him. 

Sending Robin the best glare he can muster, Steve tilts down to glance at you, his cheek pressing against your hair. You are fast asleep, just like Robin said, eyelashes kissing your cheeks, lips parted slightly. He can’t help the smile that tugs at his lips as he watches you asleep against him for a moment. Forgetting all of his other friends sitting around the table, Steve’s hand leaves your shoulder as his fingers curl, knuckles brushing over the gentle slope of your cheek. His lips ghost over your temple as he murmurs, “Hey, you.” 

It takes a few seconds — and a few more gentle strokes against your cheek — before you’re blinking awake, voice laced with sleepiness and confusion as you blink up at Steve, “Hmm?” 

“Fell asleep in the diner, babe,” Steve explains, his voice still soft with adoration, “Want me to take you home?” 

“Mm…” you pause to yawn, pressing your face further into the crook of Steve’s neck as he gently cups the side of your head in his hand to keep you close, “Yeah, in a minute.” 

“Sure, babe,” he says, his own heart pounding in his chest so hard he’s surprised you haven’t said anything, “In a minute.” 

Valentines. Happy Vday, friend!

+ Sam I think would, eventually, after a very very very long day of fighting and destroying, might actually sit still long enough for you to nap. That's your valentines gift lmao you get to sleep uninterrupted for a bit, and if anyone tries to disturb you, or risks doing so, Sam will utterly wipe them from reality. Everyone knows to steer clear of the rec room.

If you're really close by now, he might even let you use his hands or lean against him as a heater when it's cold (it's 20 degrees on valentines for me ToT)

+ Svarog will absolutely cradle you like the dearest miracle you are on Vday after watching movies in the living room, with lots of pillows stacked around you and under a blanket fort. He'd be afraid of hurting you now and again whenever you roll over and he has to adjust, but Clara has given him experience and encouragement, and logically he knows himself well enough that he can calculate how much room for error he has with every little twitch of a digit.

He may have even padded himself out a little bit, some round cushions for his sharp knees and hips so you don't get cut. Clara might let you two have some time alone after she's been put to sleep with friends (part of a sleepover), or if you're also close with her, she'd definitely pass out with you in a big cuddle puddle. Svarog would protect you both and comfort you if you have nightmares (in his own way).

+ Screwllum would, if you're together, express the holiday in a way that satisfies you both as long as you express a desire for it. He wouldn't celebrate otherwise, but when he sees how much joy it brings you...

You'll go shopping, go to the museum or aquarium, then the park for ice cream or some other treat. He may not need to eat, but he'll admit he loves to observe you as you do, and how it affects you.

When you're passed out on his shoulder or with your head in his lap, he'll brush his fingers against your cheek and whisper "Happy Valentines."

Screwllum is also the only one I think would love your puns, if you make them. "I need s'more of you!" As you stuff your face full of marshmallow treats, as an example.

Robots again, I’m so HAPPY~

+Sam is usually SO difficult to get to even sit still for five minutes…let alone stay quiet enough for you to take a lil nap. And yeah he’ll obliterate anyone who disturbs you but he’s not very cuddly with you. Maybe he’ll get you a blanket but that’s it. As if he couldn’t easily warm you up himself. But yeah a good nap is what you get, haha.

And also, yeah, it’ll take a lot of trust if you actually wanna use him as a heater. His warm hands feel so nice cupping your face, but it’s a rare occurrence. Enjoy it while it lasts!!

+Cuddly Svarog, my beloved. He’s so obviously built to Not be cuddly and yet you and Clara figure it out-you leaning up against on one of his arms all padded with pillows, and Clara on the other side. So. CUTE. Eventually the two of you do fall asleep on him…and now he’s faced with a dilemma. Obviously it won’t be difficult for him to just, stay still for the entire night while the two of you sleep but…he’s just worried about what’s the most comfortable for the two of you. Might be safer to just carry you both to bed.

+Screwllum ugh I’m SCREAMING he’s such a GENTLEMAN! Losing my composure and my train of thought…but yeah he’s great~the entire day is his treat, but he knows to not Completely spoil you either, haha…also yes I will stand by Screwllum liking your puns, the flirty ones especially. He doesn’t get it, the need to flirt despite the fact you’re already together but when you say something like, “if you were a dinosaur you’d be a gorgeousaurus~” he can’t help but laugh. And getting a laugh from Screwllum?? Completely makes your day, he’s got such a handsome laugh…Also! It’s nice to see him actually have a day to relax, he’s a very busy robot, so the fact that he took the day off to spend with you?? You don’t even know how he MANAGED to get a day off, but then he chose to spend his rare day off with his love? He’s the best…

hmm other than a typical but lovely excursion with my gf to get vday lunch and go to our favorite antique store, probably a road trip this month with my mom to go get me an MRI cause our neighboring states didn't have the right machine lol. we stopped at an antique store where I got some antique lace, a thrift store where I got a red corduroy jacket for $3 but I am thinking about using color remover/dye to make it brownish pink, and out to dinner with a family friend who lives in the area. I found the tofu lacking, sadly

Rating my months this year and why

January: 4/10, bangs too short, waves too high to swim, still had mandatory masks (which is good for us but not fun), but ayeee saw my mission pres + wife yay

February: 5/10 surf comps, bdays, anxiety, went to therapy for it, and vday (I’m single)

March: 7/10 Mr. The Rock visited and blessed us with his presence, went back to the temple, watched Clayton’s season bachelor, the best st. Patty’s day, CULTURE NIGHT, hosted some baby chicks in our hale, Jess quit elephant shack (fortune smiles upon us for that)

April: 6.5/10 got pranked hard (lice), conference, took a friend to the hospital, big sleepover at salty breeze, Rach quit the luau, my Taylor Swift birthday, bday szn again, Kualoa, Easter, the new caf opened, the 90s dance purr

May: 7/10 got Covid first time, embarassing. Harry’s House dropped (would have been a 5/10 for the month but Harry’s album saved it) abortion rally, a lot of social work in action which I loved, gun violence 😭, caught a disease in my finger- the worst pain ever, this month was a fever dream.

Demestrap human AU spend Valentine's day with a romantic date night at home while others babysit the girls. All the kids usually have a sleepover at Jellylorum's place on love day.

Munk and Deme have plenty of date nights, but VDay is still exciting, and a chance to remind each other how much they care. They get all dressed up just to have a candlelit dinner to themselves and to dance to love songs and chat, really connecting and falling in love all over again. Gifts aren't necessary beyond each other's company, but there's always a trinket or two to exchange, alongside wonderful words and reminiscing on the past. They watch the stars in the garden over wine and chocolates when it gets dark, and then head inside to have some candlelit love making ♡

So many gentle touches and kisses throughout the day. Deme presses herself against his back while he cooks, and he constantly seeks her hand over the dinnertable. They laugh between kisses, hold each other tight when dancing. They're inseperable, cherishing every moment together all night. ♡

hiatus update!

i’m probably gonna come back for a little while! maybe not as active, but i’ll see :) i think i’m in a better place! but at some point i’d love to revive my 1k bday vday sleepover! (except…not on my bday…but it’s the same premise!!) soooo yeah! i missed you guys, even though i was only gone for like 5 days lmao

okay so i had an amazing weekend with friends who actually care about me and love me and i realized that the people i’d been surrounding myself with are just…horrible. and so so mean. the guy i rejected essentially made me loose all my friends after he manipulated me for months. but they all still pretend to be my friend only to treat me like i’m worthless.

soooo i bought my “friends” (the bad ones) tickets to this music festival thing on sunday, and i realized i don’t want to go! and they don’t deserve the free tickets! my ex girlfriend (who i’m still besties with because that’s what queer culture is) got me the tickets for free so i wouldn’t be losing any money. so yeah. i’m canceling their tickets because fuck them! it’s gonna make things tense and stuff but luckily we don’t go to school together anymore!!

(but one works with me 🙄 and almost everyone else works in the same area so i’m definitely gonna see them and probably have to hang with them at some point. )

HOWEVER i’m done being treated like i’m disposable! my other REAL friends are so amazing, and i’m pissed i isolated myself from them for so long. because this guy got in my head!

this week is gonna suck ass because i have to cancel this music festival trip (which i never wanted to go to in the first place) and they’re gonna be mad. but whatever.

i’ll have fun this weekend to rub it in their faces. <3

As his brown honey eyes met yours everything else seemed to melt away. You could see the awe and joy in his smile before he was nudged to go and greet you by Sam.

He held his hand out to welcome yours and spoke softly, “You look beautiful.”

“Steve, please. I never ask for anything, and I really like Lori. Please please please,” Robin begged Steve, eyes wide as she clasped her hands together. 

Letting out an unamused laugh in the form of a huff, Steve continued to sort the tapes on the shelves, ignoring Robin’s pleading look. He repeated her words with a shake of his head, “You ‘never ask for anything,’ my ass. Robs, you begged me to take an extra shift today so you wouldn’t be alone with Keith.”

“You didn’t have to say yes!” 

“Robin.”  

“Okay, okay,” she conceded, holding her hands up in surrender, though she did continue to give him her best pout, “I’m sorry, really. But please. I won’t ask again.” 

Steve had a hard time saying no to Robin, especially when it came to her love life, but he couldn’t exactly say he was thrilled. He’d gone on a few double dates with Robin and her crush — paired with girls he didn’t know — and it was usually painfully awkward. They clearly didn’t want to be there, and Steve didn’t want to, either, leading to unbearable silence as Steve watched Robin attempt to flirt with whatever girl she was interested in at the time. Still, he knew she would do the same for him if he asked. 

“Alright, fine, but this is the last time, I swear to god,” he grumbled, trying to hide his smile as Robin threw her arms around his neck and thanked him profusely.

“Can you at least try to look like you don’t hate your life?” Robin hissed under her breath, shoving her elbow into Steve’s side as they waited outside of the roller rink for their dates to arrive. 

“Sorry,” Steve rolled his eyes, but did attempt to not look so bored as he leaned back against the wall and glanced at Robin, “I’m just… nervous.”

Robin laughed a little, scoffing, “You? Nervous?”

“You know I’m not a fan of blind dates!”

“I know. I’m sorry,” Robin softened, leaning into Steve’s side and giving him an appreciative smile, “Thanks for coming with me. Lori said her friend is super nice. And super pretty. Totally your type. If that helps at all.”

“Yeah, okay,” Steve nodded, bumping his shoulder into hers gently. It was silent for a moment before Steve added, the hint of a teasing smile on his lips, “Did you choose this date on purpose? Roller skating? You’re the clumsiest person I know, you’ll have to hold her hand the entire time.”

“It wasn’t my idea. But either way, maybe that’s the point, dingus. Maybe if you’re lucky, y/n will hold your hand, too.”

Though Steve hadn’t exactly been looking forward to it, the date was going much better than he’d anticipated. You were totally Steve’s type — so pretty, and super funny and kind. Unlike other blind dates he’d gone on, it wasn’t awkward at all. You were easy to talk to, and even better, you had no problem poking fun at Robin and Lori with him. They’d left their milkshakes at the table, venturing off to the rink, leaving the two of you behind, sipping on the rest of your own shakes. 

Steve laughed behind his hand as he watched Robin attempt to stand from the bench she’d been sitting on to put her skates on. She nearly fell over immediately, sending her arms flying for Lori’s help. Shaking his head, Steve grinned over at you and shook his head, “Robin is literally the most uncoordinated person I know. This is gonna be interesting.” 

“Oh god,” you giggled, eyes going wide as you glanced over at your friend and her date, “Lori isn’t much better. When she told me we were coming here, I thought she was joking.” 

“Shit,” Steve laughed, “maybe Robin just wanted me to be her ride to the ER.”

“I guess we’re just the babysitters.”

He huffed, though there was no real malice in his voice, and rolled his eyes, “I’m always the goddamn babysitter.”

“Well, babysitters can still have fun,” you gave Steve a shy smile, playing with the straw in your shake before glancing back up at him, “Do you wanna skate with me?”

Steve’s heart flipped in his chest, butterflies fluttering wildly as he nodded, maybe a bit too quickly, “Yeah, of course. I’d love to.” 

“Okay, but no promises I’ll be any good at it,” you laughed as you started to slide out of your side of the booth, leaving Steve to scramble after you as you made your way to rent some skates for the evening. 

“You can’t be any worse than Robin or Lori, from the looks of it,” Steve snorted, glancing over at the couple who were both clinging to the wall around the outside of the rink, “Besides, I’ve got you.” 

After paying the fee for both of your skates — to which you tried to deny, but Steve had insisted — Steve found a spot to put on your skates. He plopped down on the bench, scooting over to make room for you as he untied his shoes. You sat down next to him, your shoulder bumping into his, causing you to stammer an apology, feeling like your face was on fire. 

When Steve looked up from his skates, your breath caught in your throat from how close he was. If you wanted, you could’ve counted each of his eyelashes or memorized every single one of his moles. He gave you a gentle smile (one that he hoped didn’t betray his own nervousness) and shook his head, “’S okay. Are ya ready?” 

It took a moment for you to come to your senses, and your face filled with warmth as you watched Steve stand up, holding his hand out to you. Nodding quickly, you took Steve’s hands and let him help you onto your feet, which caused you to roll forward, nearly bumping into his chest. You both stumbled a bit, causing nervous giggles to erupt between the two of you. 

Though Steve was certainly not the most experienced skater on the planet, he started moving back towards the rink, still holding your hand in his. For as much as you’d been making fun of your friend, you weren’t exactly the best skater either, and you followed him clumsily, giggling, “Showing off, Steve?” 

Steve laughed, a shy, quiet sound as his face colored with a noticeable bright red, even under the dim lighting, “I wasn’t trying to, but if I’m impressing you… yes.” 

“It’s definitely worki-“ you stopped mid-sentence as you nearly lost your balance after following Steve onto the rink. Your free hand flew out, landing on Steve’s bicep to regain your balance. 

His warm hand grasped yours quickly, and you could see that he was clearly trying not to laugh as he pressed his lips together and asked, “You okay?” 

“Oh yeah, never better,” you replied, reluctantly removing your hand from his arm, though you kept your hand in his, “I wanna see what other cool moves you have.” 

“Oh, you’ll see ‘em, babe,” he grinned, quickly turning around to face forward again, only to spin himself too hard and land on his ass, nearly pulling you down with him. 

You were sure you’d never laughed harder in your life as you bent at your waist in an attempt to catch your breath, “Was that one of them?” 

If you thought Steve had been blushing earlier, his face was now deep red with embarrassment. He let out a groan, hands covering his face, “Fuck, I’m never going to live this down.” 

“Probably not.” 

After another fit of laughter that Steve eventually joined in on, you held both of your hands out to help Steve up. The two of you struggled for a few moments; an awkward dance of trying to help Steve onto his feet while simultaneously trying to stay on your own. You almost toppled onto him at least twice and when he finally stood up, Steve huffed, “Okay, next time, we’re doing something that is a lot less dangerous. And embarrassing.” 

“Next time?” you asked hopefully as your hand slipped into his, fingers slotting between the spaces of his perfectly. 

“Yeah, next time,” Steve nodded, one side of his mouth quirking up into a small smile, “If you want.” 

You nodded quickly, eyes shining, “I’d love that.” 

“Then it’s a date.” 

yes, you held hands the entire time. and if the whole thing had actually been an elaborate plan by robin to get the two of you together, she wasn't going to say anything.

had a sleepover with my best friend last night, then this morning we got bagels and went to the dog park!! now we’re back at my place watching school of rock and i am so happy
