Today I wanted to focus on creating a monster based off of my research from the day before. I wanted to create a monster that disrupted expectations in nature, like being caught off guard. One of my biggest inspirations is the artist @vcreatures on tumblr - I’ll reblog some of his work in a different post.

I ended up not getting very far with the idea, but I’ll revisit it later. Instead, I decided to disrupt the evolution of an animal. I chose the segmented spider, as it’s had the most uniform evolution from its primitive form to its modern day form. Honestly, I wish I had chosen a more complex evolution to disrupt, but this is a good starting point.

The end result was my new species of spider - the Pastry Spider.

To briefly explain:

In this timeline, the Industrial Revolution was discovered much earlier on and happened in a much grander scale. As a result, almost all trees were cut down and the tree roots in which these basal spiders resided in became more scarce. With the lack of homes came the need to fight for the limited space. The segmented spider became more aggressive and territorial, fighting other spiders or retreating further underground for space.

The spiders’ chelicerae became thicker and stronger for digging and fighting, while their fangs grew longer and thinner, almost scalpel like. Their carapace and back became studded. However, with all these strengths came its biggest weakness - its exoskeleton. The increased size of the spiders book lung required more soft underbelly to be exposed for expansion, leaving a giant weak spot. To counteract this, these spiders had to utilise their only other resource - their fallen foe. With surgical accuracy, the long fangs are used to separate the exoskeleton of other spider, pierced onto their spiked carapace and sealed in with the now scattered silk glands. Thus, earning the name ‘Pastry Spider’, inspired by the Mille Feuille.
