   “Hey.”
She leans, almost immediately, against a wooden post by the entrance, smiles in greeting. There’s no real light or gentleness to the motion, but no coarseness, either -- just a motion of an acknowledgment. There’s a board embedded with blades strapped to her back, and she’s dotted with blood, though she doesn’t know it. “You the doctor?”

(BRETT DALTON, 37 400+, HE/HIM) We have been waiting for a while, but DORIAN EVERETT ASTOR was finally spotted in the village today. People heard whispers that he is a FAMILIAR (tiger) that is hellbent on [ staying away from ] the veils. Will he succeed? Only time can tell. Until then we will keep a close eye on him as he listens to SPANISH SAHARA by FOALS and searches for OPHELIA BELCOURT, his WITCH. (Max, they/them, CST/GMT-6)
Positive traits: Loyal; compassionate; disciplined; reliable; inquisitive
Mixed traits: Overprotective; neutral; independent; focused; straightforward
Negative traits: Secretive; self-centered; aloof; insensitive; obstinate
Dorian was born into a legacy family of the magically attuned who have served as familiars for powerful witch and warlock families for generations. Pride of the Astor family for his powerful shift form, he was promised to Ophelia Belcourt as soon as her magic started to manifest and grew up alongside her, fiercely protective. He’s always approached his appointment more like a bodyguard than a servant, and eventually, became a lifelong companion and friend.
He’s lowkey (and sometimes highkey) frustrated with Ophelia’s determination to fix the veils, feeling rooted to the spot out of a sense of overprotectiveness towards her and her family. He’s worried they’re getting involved in a fight that’s too big for their kind to handle, and that it’s only putting Ophelia into a line of fire that could and should be avoided.
Kind of a fun-sink in general, Dorian tends to look down on the non-preternatural and younger races as disappointingly crunchy, and will rarely get involved in their affairs. Could be a fun source of conflict or tension, or maybe you’re a younger/more mundane thing that earns his respect and changes his mind. Other familiars are, of course, an exception; he’s liable to be friendly with them faster than most on principle, and wouldn’t hesitate to take them under his wing.
I’d totally love to chat potential existing relationships with any other centuries-old folks; a single memorable run-in ages ago, an on-again-off-again friendship, frenemy-ship, whatever!
I’m always keen to plot just in general, so if any of this strikes your fancy feel free to DM or hit me with a like and I’ll come to you! I’ve also got discord if that’s more your jam for plotting, but I admittedly forget to log in sometimes (read: frequently), so feel free to poke me over tumblr as well if I’m unresponsive there. I promise I’m not ignoring you.
As a general heads up, I use RPThreadTracker to keep myself sorted out, which means I’ll be reposting replies to open threads in order to be able to track them properly. Do not be alarmed/confused/etc.
Super excited to be here with all you lovely people!

The Heartless: Chapter 5

Chapter V: in which the proverbial dam breaks
We stayed with Esther for three days. We’d spend the daylight hours working in the field, and in the evenings we’d sit outside and listen to Esther’s stories while the sun sank into the far-off horizon and gave way to the cool summer night. Sometimes, she’d help us in the garden or sit by the back door with the baby; other times she’d spend most of the afternoon in the house, and we’d see her carrying out crates of old-looking memorabilia, like our hard work had inspired her to finally clear out the detritus of an old life that she didn’t lead anymore.
Over those three days, we razed the overgrown garden rows, trimmed back the bushes, and cleared the creeping vines from the side of the house with the old rusted garden tools from the dusty, cobweb-laden wooden bin by the back door. There were several moments where I considered disappearing overnight, dragging an unwilling Petra back home with me before something could go horribly wrong. But every time, the thought of sleeping another night in the treetops and the mental image of Esther waking up one morning to find us gone convinced me to stay, at least until the work was done.
On the morning of the fourth day, Petra and I gathered up our measly belongings from the stable and bid our goodbyes to Esther and the baby, standing between the freshly shorn raspberry bushes with the whole truth sinking into the sun-baked earth unspoken. I began a thousand sentences in my head without finishing any of them, but thankfully, Petra picked up the slack.
“Thank you so much, ma’am, for everything,” she said with a polite nod.
Esther returned her thanks with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Of course, dear. It was nice to have some helping hands around for a few days.”
Petra went in for a quick hug, and if I’d had a heart, I believe it would have leapt into my throat and stayed there, permanently, until I choked on it and died. Instead, I found myself suddenly frozen to the ground where I stood, a thousand panicked thoughts buzzing under my skin until I saw Esther reach her free arm towards me and took a practiced step backward, a trillion possible endings to a million possible nightmares playing out in my head in that one instant.
“Thank you,” I choked out, startling Esther out of the bewildered expression that had crept onto her kind face. “Sincerely, I’ll never be able to thank you enough. More than you will ever know.” I gave her a polite nod to match Petra’s and turned to go, but when we were halfway to the road, she stopped me.
“Ace!” Esther called after me.
I turned around to see her look of confusion soften into something bordering on sorrow.
“I don’t know what it is, and I don’t expect you to tell me,” she began, “but whatever it is, no matter how bad you think it is, it doesn’t matter. You’re always welcome here, if you ever decide to come back. That’s a promise.”
“Please don’t make a promise I can’t expect you to keep, ma’am,” I answered honestly, and then I turned to go, Petra marching solemnly alongside me with her hands clutching the straps of her now full bag.
“You’re good kids, both of you!” Esther shouted, her voice carrying her desperation through the raspberry field down to the road’s edge. “I really mean that!”
I said nothing in return, and looked back only once, to see the baby reaching that chubby hand out toward me from afar. As the tiny house and Esther’s slowly shrinking form began to disappear at our backs, I thought quietly about the argument Petra and I’d had amongst the too-tall weeds that first day, and was left wondering which of us was right.
* * *
Bertrand greeted me with cold indifference when we finally arrived back in the Village of the Heartless. The house was stuffy; it felt more oppressively stark and empty than I remembered, as if I’d been gone for months instead of less than a week. It didn’t seem like Bertrand had eaten much, unless he’d managed to get more food in my absence—the more likely scenario was that he’d been brewing away at failed cure after cure in his study the entire time I had been away. It wasn’t as though he did much else when I was home, for that matter.
The sweltering summer dragged on, slow and sticky like pulled taffy. The weeks passed in much the same way as the ones that came before; Bertrand and I rarely spoke, and I spent long afternoons in the shade of the forest grove having target practice with Petra. She and I had taken to doing odd jobs for the neighbors in exchange for food or supplies, scrubbing kitchen floors on our hands and knees or picking fresh vegetables for the summer harvest until the sun had dappled new freckles across our noses and the tops of our shoulders. Whenever I couldn’t sleep at night (which was often), I’d climb to the top of the oak tree by the village gates with my bow and arrow and wait for someone to show up. No one ever did, aside from Petra—though her escapades were admittedly few now that our days were occupied by work.
Eventually, the days began to grow shorter and the summer heat faded into the crisp early autumn. The leaves on the big oak tree lost their green hue and the air grew drier day by day as the year commenced its twilight march to the cold, dark winter. The mounting tension in our tiny house came to a head on one cool autumn night, when my tired bones finally gave in to the deceitful throes of sleep.
* * *
My parents were very good at hiding the fact that I had no heart in my chest, and they had to be—harboring a Heartless child was against royal decree and would likely get them imprisoned, or worse. The people of Swallow’s Point didn’t suspect a thing, and I was content to keep it that way. I saw no reason to ever be discovered; I was living an ordinary childhood simply by pretending to be ordinary, and it was working.
It was just a beautiful, average day; the neighborhood children were out playing in the grass. In an act of heroics, Basil climbed atop a tree stump, wielding a stick like a pretend sword. We were playing knights, like we always did.
“I’m going to be king!” Basil declared gleefully to our group like a ruler addressing his people.
I turned up my nose and protested, “Basil, we’re all supposed to be knights! That’s the point of the game!”
Basil frowned, fists landing on his scrawny hips. “No, stupid, I mean in real life! I’m going to be king someday!”
"Sure you are,” retorted a kid who reminded me of Knife Boy. “You have to be related to the king to do that.”
Basil shrugged. “Maybe I am.”
“I don’t think so. You’re too weird to be related to King Brutus,” Marcus taunted.
“Don’t speak that way to your future king!” Basil joked, hopping down gracefully from his stump. He landed with a soft thud, worn-out shoes kicking up a cloud of dirt. The dust coated his face and clothes as he and the other boy began play-wrestling in the dirt road where we lived, laughing all the while, and warning bells resounded in my head. I could sense the impending danger from a mile away; it was an instinct I had been honing even throughout the most carefree years of my life, in case I ever needed it.
"Basil,” I muttered, hoping he would hear me and no one else, “maybe you shouldn’t—”
I stopped short, choking on my own breath as the group went dead silent. Marcus had gone to push Basil away and in doing so had placed a hand to Basil’s empty chest. He froze that way, eyes wide, and Basil paled considerably, realizing the gravity of what was happening. The moment cemented itself in my mind’s eye as tension soaked into the air, heavy and still.
“Why were you tricking us this whole time?” Marcus grumbled in a voice too low and too angry to ever come from a child. “You’re cursed! You could doom our whole village!”
“I just wanted friends,” was Basil’s whispered reply, so quiet I almost didn’t hear him. I saw him take a deep breath, chest rising, and then he spoke again, this time louder, bolder, “It shouldn’t matter! We were all friends until just now when you decided something was wrong with me! But that doesn’t change what I’ve always been!”
The entire group of children, save for myself, turned on him in an instant.
I backed further and further away from the scene but couldn’t look away, and in my mind’s eye their pretend-sword sticks became distorted until they resembled Knife Boy’s grimy dagger. I reasoned with myself, assuring myself that he was spry enough, light enough on his feet to escape. But poor, ten-year-old, Heartless Basil who had just declared himself king stared me dead in the eyes with a look that told me to run. So I did. He was foolish to let his guard down, I told myself. It was his own fault for becoming complacent. I almost convinced myself it was true.
  “Ace! Ace, wake up!”
I jolted awake, the residual terror warping the shadows cast by the lantern light into something macabre. It took a moment to will my body to move; my limbs had been reduced to lead, like if I played dead whatever demons haunted my sleep could not hurt me.
“Fuck,” I finally choked out, the hoarseness in my voice making me realize I had been screaming. I hadn’t woken up screaming from a nightmare in years, and it was at that point that I at last noticed Bertrand hovering beside my cot, the soft light from the lantern illuminating his stony features. There was something genuine in his expression—I realized belatedly that it was concern, and for some reason, it made me uncomfortable. Bertrand did not admonish me for my language, but instead stared at me patiently, expectantly, and somehow that made it worse.
"Sorry," I rasped. "For waking you."
Bertrand shook his head. “I was not asleep,” was all he said.
It occurred to me that Bertrand was the only living soul to whom I had ever told the details about Basil’s disappearance and the day I left Swallow’s Point. I had spilled to him one night as a child, the first time I woke him in the middle of the night with my screaming. He hadn’t said much, but he’d made me a cup of hot tea and let me lay my ten-year-old soul bare to him despite the ungodly hour. It had helped at the time, but it didn’t feel like an option now. I tried to steady my breathing, but I couldn’t, not with him looking at me so earnestly like that; it was as though my blood itself were vibrating just under my skin.
“I need to take a walk,” I said, swinging my legs over the side of the cot and reaching for my shoes. I met Bertrand’s gaze, daring him to challenge me, but though he said nothing, his expression softened into a sort of resigned understanding.
“Are you sure you’re in any condition to do that?” he finally asked as I was putting on my cloak with trembling limbs.
“No,” I responded shakily, walking out the door unarmed.
Once I was outside, the fresh air immediately took some of the edge off, and I walked a short ways before my legs gave out like a newborn deer’s and I flopped backward onto the grass. I inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly, in and out several times until my breathing began to steady into something approaching normal.
This couldn’t go on any longer. I needed answers, some form of closure, someone to tell me straight to my face to get lost or die for all they cared, something more tangibly final than the memories that haunted me.
That night, I made a rash decision: I had to return home to see my parents.
When I eventually struggled to my feet and headed back inside, Bertrand was nowhere to be seen, but there was a mug of freshly brewed tea waiting on the table, the kettle still steaming on the stove as the crackling fire slowly burned out.

9/10  —  jeff rosenstock.
“every night you go to bed you wake up just a little more in pain. every time you’re dressing for a sunny day, the clouds surprise you with rain. every cigarette you smoke ‘cause you’re addicted to a quite source of company...”
wake up  —  arcade fire.
“something filled up my heart with nothing, someone told me not cry. now that i’m older, my heart’s colder, and i can see that it’s a lie. children, wake up! hold your mistake up, before they turn the summer into dust.”
this is me trying  —  taylor swift.
“i’ve been having a hard time adjusting, i had the shiniest wheels, now they’re rusting...” / “i just wanted you to know that this is me trying. they told me all of my cages were mental, so i got wasted like all my potential...”
i know alone  —  haim.
“some things never change, they never fade, it’s never over. some things never grow, i know alone, like no one else does. days get slow like counting cell towers on the road. i know alone and i don’t wanna talk about it. friday hits and i feel like i’m wasting everybody’s time. when sunday comes they expect me to shine...”
future me hates me  —  the beths.
“oh this well-designed world, everyone that i know is broken. and has fell for it before...” / “i wanna risk going through future heartbreak, future headaches, wide eyed nights late lying awake. with future cold shakes from stupid mistakes, future me hates me for...”
fake happy  —  paramore.
“if i smile with my teeth, bet you’ll believe me. oh, please, don’t ask me how i’ve been, don’t make me play pretend! oh no, oh what’s the use? oh please, i bet everybody here is fake happy too!”
room temperature  —  faye webster.
“looks like i’ve been crying again, over the same thing. i wonder if anyone has ever cried for me. nothing means anything, at least, anymore. even my tears have gone room temperature. i should get out more, i should get out more...”
to tundra  —  los campesinos!
“and when the anger had paused, i turned and answered their calls. with your just audience, i’m the applause. we take on the burden, of all these sad eyed children, with lilies bunched in our hands. we fake our concern and speak softly as the surgeon, tells wife to cancel her plans...”
motion sickness  —  phoebe bridgers.
“i have emotional motion sickness, somebody roll the windows down. there are no words in the english language i could scream to drown you out...”
my tears ricochet  —  taylor swift.
“i didn’t have it in myself to go with grace, and so the battleships will sink beneath the waves. you had to kill me, but it killed you just the same. cursing my name, wishing i stayed, look at how my tears ricochet...”
we used to wait  —  arcade fire.
“so i never wrote a letter, i never wrote my true heart, i never wrote it down. so when the lights cut out, i was lost standing in the wilderness downtown. now our lives are changing fast, hope that something pure can list. it seems strange how we used to wait for letters to arrive. but what’s stranger still is how something so small can keep you alive...”
holland, 1945  —  neutral milk hotel.
“the only girl i’ve ever loved, was born with roses in her eyes. but then they buried her alive, one evening in 1945...”  /  “but now we must pack up every piece of the life we used to love. just to keep ourselves at least enough to carry on...”
i wish i was someone better  —  blood red shoes.
“i made a mistake, i wear the scars to show my shame. what should i do? when i’m the one who can’t get through. what should i do? when i’m the one, hey, i’m the one to blame. i wish i was someone better...”
hello sadness  —  los camepsinos!
“little kisses come to pass then goodbye courage, hello sadness. it’s only hope that spring’s eternal, and that’s the reason why, this dripping from my broken heart is never running dry...”
maybe  —  lewis capaldi.
“i gave my all but not enough, and with the weight of expectation, i’ll be sleeping rough. how come i’m the only one who ever seems to get in my way? lately, i’ve been fucking up a good thing any chance i get. somebody to lean on, somebody to hold, it’s just another to lead out, before i let go.. and i ain’t tryna be lonely, solely, but everything i touch turns to stone. maybe i’m better off on my own. ..”
i bet on losing dogs  —  mitski.
“i bet on losing dogs, i know they’re losing and i pay for my place by the ring. where i’ll be looking in their eyes with their down, i’ll be there by their side, i’m losing by their side...”
life is a long time  —  los campesinos!
“life, life is a long time, too long to my mind, too long by far. between my waterfalls and your landslides, there’s cartography in every scar. life, life is a long time, too long to my mind, too long by far. because it starts pretty rough and ends up even worse, and what goes on in between, i try to keep it out of my thoughts...”

RP Masterlist
Plots. Prompts. AUs. Tropes. What have you.
#YAS #UNF-- GOOD SHIT #👌👀👌👀👌👀👌👀👌👀 GOOD SHIT GO౦Ԁ SHIT👌 THATS ✔ SOME GOOD👌👌SHIT RIGHT👌👌THERE👌👌👌 RIGHT✔THERE ✔✔IF I DO ƼAҮ SO MY SELF 💯 I SAY SO
Please know this: These will be updated from time to time! Many of these plots I’ve worked hard on and am eager to try out. Yes, a lot of them are romantic or darkly romantic -- sorry. Most of these can be altered to fit whatever we want. Some of them will be pretty hard to RP, I recognize. Whoops! Plenty of these can be really angsty, dark, and well -- hopefully we can have some fun with that.
                                                         Plots.
“Take it Back” // Pink Floyd Post-Apocalyptic AU Ten or so years after the Zombie Outbreak.
“The Scout.”
1.) Muse A is from a well secured township and is sent to scout as to why its sister location has gone radio silent. They run into Muse B on the way. Do they work together and travel to the sister location or is Muse B the reason the sister location is down?
1.2) If Muse B is the cause of the fall of the sister location, why? What were the reasons? What happened behind closed doors of that township?
“Supplies.”
2.) Muse A is on a supply run and runs into Muse B. Do they decide to band together for survival or do they fight for the supplies Muse A has found? 2.1.) Muse A is on a supply run and runs into Muse B. Muse B is wounded and Muse A manages to rescue and heal Muse B. Do they stick together afterwards or does Muse B skip town?
2.2) Muse B tells Muse A of their plans to go to a place that is claimed to be some sort of sanctuary by someone on the radio they’ve found. Muse A decides to accompany Muse B. Is it truly sanctuary or is there something rotten afoot?
“Provisions.”
3.) Muse B is caught by Muse A for hoarding rations and keeping more than their fair share. In a desperate attempt to keep Muse A from outing them and potentially being ejected from the group, Muse B confides in them that they’re pregnant and unsure of how they’re going to be able to survive with a child and so have kept extras for future use.
3.1) Muse A decides to kick it up a notch and has quickly placed themselves at Muse A’s side and vows to fulfill whatever roles Muse B needs, spouse, parent, provider, etc.
“Just a peek.” Life Could Be A Dream // The Crew-Cuts
1.) Muse B gets a furtive glance of the future. They see a fulfilling, wonderful life with Muse A -- kids, house, stability, true love, real happiness. Do they want it? Is this something they’ve dreamt of? Is it something they want with Muse A? Or is it something they never considered before? Something they never wanted at all? Do they pursue it or do they fight it?
1.2) Muse B and Muse A do not get along or are enemies. What changes in Muse B’s behaviour after seeing the vision or do they maintain their stance?
1.3) Muse B got the vision wrong -- and it is not their future with Muse A but instead Muse C’s. Do they attempt to take it for themselves or let it go?
“Pack it up.” Send Me On My Way // Rusted Root
1.) The muses have to live with each other for some reason or another despite not liking each other. They’ve got to make it work. The apartment is cramped with only one bathroom. It’s up to them to make it into a cozy home. The muses must decorate and furnish their new apartment. To the shopping centers they go! 1.2) Muse A has been standoffish, cold towards Muse B for whatever reasons until they see Muse B do mundane, domestic, pedestrian things and finds themselves quickly falling for them. 1.3) Muse B has been nursing a crush on Muse A but due to Muse A’s standoffish nature towards them, they never let their feelings be known.
“If you go, I’ll stay. If you come back, I’ll be right here.” Where’s My Love // SYML Reincarnation!AU
1.) The muses have spent every lifetime together, whether they know it or not. From their first incarnation, throughout every era, they have found each other, fought for each other, and loved each other. They’ve belonged together in any form. This time, it’s different… Muse A remembers all their past lives with Muse B. They know that they’re missing Muse B in this lifetime -- where are they?
1.2) Muse B is with someone else and it’s up to Muse A to win them back. Do they tell them of their past lives? How are they going to get the love of their lives back to where they belong: with them?
“Funnel cake madness.” Younger // Tony Anderson
1.) The muses go to the carnival! Rides, food, fireworks, and showing off at the games to win each other stuffed animals.
“Someone to stay.” Amnesia!AU Crimson and Clover // Tommy James and the Shondells
1.) Muse A suffers from amnesia and must rely on Muse B for just about everything.
1.2) Dark! Muse A actually doesn’t know Muse B and Muse B chooses to falsify memories and a whole life together with Muse A.
“absentia” The Night We Met // Lord Huron
1.) Muse A suddenly vanishes but no one is talking about it. Muse B is absolutely panicked over this as Muse A is special to them. But no one even recalls Muse A and think Muse B is losing it. Was Muse A even real or were they someone Muse B created to deal with trauma? Looking through photos and videos, there is no Muse A. When Muse B is about to accept that Muse A was never real… they find an old wallet photo of Muse A and Muse B together.
1.2) Muse B has a choice. Show others of this proof of Muse A or keep it hidden. Who is in on Muse A’s vanishing and erasure of their life? How will Muse B get them back? How far will they go to reclaim what’s theirs?
“Operation: Romance their pants off.” Fake Date!AU Tonight You Belong To Me // Patience and Prudence
1.) Muse A goes to Muse B to help them woo Muse C. Muse B is secretly in love with Muse A but they just want them to be happy, so they suck it up, and help Muse A.
1.2) Muse A decides the best way to get Muse C’s attention is through jealousy and convinces Muse B to fake date them.
1.3) Eventually it comes to light as to what Muse A is up to. Muse A made a move on Muse C and Muse C wants to know why Muse A is trying to cheat on Muse B. Muse A fesses up to what’s been happening and Muse C laughs it off and accidentally outs Muse B’s romantic feelings towards Muse A.
1.4) OR -- Muse A begins developing feelings for Muse B as they fake date and they have to figure out a way to stop fake-dating and start real-dating.
“Oh, god. It’s you.” Mr. Sandman // SYML
1.) Muse B does a summoning spell to locate their one true love. Muse A appears. These two do not get along. Confusion is had.
1.2) Muse A wants to know what the spell was. Muse B refuses to say.
1.3) Bonus. Muse B has done the spell wrong and now Muse A cannot go too far from them, forcing them to live together, work together, etc. Muse B starts to see why they’re their true love in the pedestrian, domestic, everyday things they witness Muse A doing.
“Second chances.” Mona
1.) After a one night stand, Mona doesn’t think she’s going to see Muse B ever again -- until she finds out she’s pregnant. Having fertility issues, she sees this as a second chance and seeks out Muse B to tell them she is keeping the offspring whether they want to be a part of it or not.
1.2) Muse B wants to be a part of the pregnancy and the child’s life, and so Mona moves in with them to give the relationship a shot, platonic or otherwise.
“The Guy in the American Flag Onesie.” Josette
1.) Freshly new to this dimension, Jo attempts to settle into a typical terran life. But she’s no idea who all these heroes are. Watching the news at a diner, she cracks a joke about not knowing who Captain America is.
1.2) Overhearing this, someone sits down across from her, and tells her just who Captain America is -- from Steve Rogers himself.

short version | long version | youtube | spotify unwrapped
long version will lead you to the 165 song, 10 hour and 34 minute playlist which i’ve been slowly adding to since january. short version will lead you to what you see here. youtube will lead you to the playlist you see here but... wait for it... on youtube. mostly because i know not everyone has spotify. spotify unwrapped will lead you to a mixture of the long and the short version, which is pretty bloated with austin wintory songs because those are what i listen to when i write or read usually.
the long version is much improved in length from last year, which was 261 songs and 17 hours, but that’s mostly because august through december i was pretty bad at keeping track of the music that caught my attention. whoops.
and under the cut is me ranting about music, like usual. enjoy!
i. dark night || philip sheppard *instrumental*
This was my absolute favorite from the Detroit: Become Human soundtrack. I tended to prefer Kara’s songs most because they were gorgeous and haunting and just plain fantastic. Connor’s songs were mostly listened to while writing for the fandom, but Kara’s songs were what I kept coming back to. ii. curse of the i-5 corridor || neko case So I left home and faked my ID I fucked every man that I wanted to be
Sometime in January, I fell in love with eighteen wheels on an uphill climb, which was a 91k hank/connor wip by blackeyedblonde. Hank’s a trucker. Connor occasionally dabbles in sex work to keep himself alive and moving. But like, it’s so much more than that? Anyway, at some point the author linked to this song. I think it may have been on tumblr, but I fell in love with it and neko case.
iii. way down we go || kaleo Oh, 'cause they will run you down, down 'til the dark Yes and they will run you down, down 'til you fall And they will run you down, down 'til you go Yeah, so you can't crawl no more
Speaking of Detroit: Become Human (sensing a theme?), this fanvideo is one of my favorite things in the world. I had it and a couple other fantastic videos like it playing in the background while writing for the fandom. This video, in fact, is what finally made me go in search of the game. iv. almost (sweet music) || hozier The same kind of music haunts her bedroom I'm almost me again, she's almost you Wasteland, Baby was a thing that happened to me. Which would have already been enough to get it on this list, but I also listened to it on repeat while writing my first DBH fic. v. dancing in a room || ezi I know you notice, notice me I might be broken but it's not showing It's how I'm copin', copin' I don’t actually remember where this one came from. I know that sometime when March is still a bit cold, I listened to a playlist on spotify that I can’t find for the life of me. It had a lot of the songs that are about to come up on it, and before I started exclusively listening to audiobooks while I got ready for work in the morning, I listened to random fantastic playlists. vi. epic (pt ii) || anais mitchell & justin vernon And suddenly Hades was only a man with a taste of nectar upon his lips
Hadestown was also a thing that happened to me. This song makes me fucking weak. All of the lyrics are great, the whole song is gorgeous and haunting and so perfect it hurts, but those lyrics above are just *chefs kiss* vii. spanish sahara || foals Forget the horror here Leave it all down here It's future rust and it's future dust
Sometime during the spring, I played Life Is Strange and had a million and one feelings. I played both options for the ending and each one was gut wrenching in its own way. I think I still prefer the one where Chloe lives, but this song has literally haunted me ever since.
viii. obstacles || syd matters Someday we will foresee obstacles Through the blizzard, through the blizzard And this is the song that plays if you make the other choice. Again, SUPER TRAGIC, but also you know. You get to keep your girlfriend. ix. tom thumb || bitter ruin And I know I'll be burnt, but I can stand a flame or two to catch you
This was one of the songs that I discovered on the mysterious spotify playlist! Something I’d forgotten: I discovered Hadestown off of that playlist. Thanks, mystery playlist. You gave me all the ear worms. x. wolves of the revolution || the arcadian wild You're trapped inside of your own heart It's a spectators sport, just play your part You guessed it - from the mystery playlist. They’re all very reminiscent of the Hadestown soundtrack. Vaguely eerie, kind of haunting, a lot beautiful. Makes you feel like you’re a forest creature living on the edge of the swamp. You know: the aesthetic. xi. epic (pt iii) || anais mitchell & justin vernon Where is the treasure inside your chest? Where is your pleasure? Where is your youth? Where is the man with his hat in his hands? Who stands in the garden with nothing to lose I thought about only including this one instead of including part 2, but in the end I loved both too much to choose. Hadestown, man. I hope it comes to Ohio at some point in the near future. xii.  the spine || darren korb & ashley barrett Fingers tied themselves in knots around the heart It beats in time I see the spine of the world
I have never actually played Transistor, which is fucking tragic because I listened to basically the entire soundtrack over and over again for the entire year. There’s at least one more song from the game on this list, but it is really wonderful. Haunting vocals, perfect for writing or reading or driving.  xiii. don’t think twice || hikaru utada I'm only crying 'cause I never dreamed It'd take this long, it'd take this long Hi, I played Kingdom Hearts 3 this year. And I cried so fucking much. I had some issues with the game, namely how the ending was such a clusterfuck of boss fight after boss fight and emotional character arc resolutions so it all felt kind of rushed? But the gameplay was superb, the selfie thing was ingenious, and I did cry at least six different times while I was stressing my way through fighting boss fights with blurry eyes. xiv. face my fears || hikaru utada Oh, let me face, let me face, let me face my fears Won't be long, won't be long, I'm almost here Watch me cry all my tears
So like, if you care at all you’ve probably already seen it, but the opening cutscene of KH3 was to Face My Fears, and I’m gonna be real honest here - I didn’t like it at first. I moaned and groaned about Skrillex and how it was nothing like Simple and Clean or Passion/Sanctuary. But it grew on me to the point that it was actually my most listened to song this year. Watch me cry all my tears, indeed. xv. waves || chloe moriondo Make me into more than a goner Perhaps a little bit stronger Thicker skin, less needy, And maybe to not bruise so damn easily, but you can't
I don’t remember where I found this song either? Maybe mystery playlist but probably not. Either way, it’s pretty and uh, I too want to slow the world down. xvi. ashes || bear mccreary -instrumental- Man, oh man, let’s talk about how good of a game God of War was. It was so good, guys. The game play was excellent, the world was gorgeous, and the storyline was interesting. And the music went so, so hard. Between Horizon Zero Dawn and the new God of War, I have basically been ruined for all other games. Also, dad protagonists, am I right? xvii. wake up, moving on || kevin penkin -instrumental-
Did not actually realize this was part of a soundtrack to a game? But it’s very lilty. Has that French quirky romcom vibe to it and I listened to the crap out of it in early summer. xviii. paper boats || darren korb & ashley barrett The river always finds the sea So helplessly Like you find me
Another Transistor song. I really love Ashley Barrett’s voice. I should probably at some point play the game. xix. call off your ghost || dessa I hope she makes you happy It's just a lot to ask to watch your future walking past me
This song played during one of the weather segments of Welcome to Night Vale and made me remember how much I absolutely adore Dessa. Her voice is fantastic and I love the way that her songs flow. Also, this song gives me personal feels. xx. power over me || dermot kennedy I wanna be king in your story I wanna know who you are I want your heart to beat for me I have absolutely no idea where I heard this one. It might have been playing on the radio while I was driving somewhere? I played it a lot during the summer.  xxi. a future for the krogan || christopher lennertz -instrumental- It’s been a while since I played Mass Effect, but this song came up on a writing playlist and I have been listening to it ever since.
xxii. mine || bazzi Running circles 'round my mind Even when it's rainy all you ever do is shine
Shrug emoji.
xxiii. bite || charlie cunningham Stone cold faces let you keep you poisoning your blood Cut you open then you'll see poison in your blood
Also shrug emoji? Most of the time when I’m doing these there’s fandom connatations to half the songs, but these year I wasn’t heavily invested in a whole lot of fandoms so these are mostly just songs I listened to while I was a) driving, b) in the shower, or c) while reading.
xxiv. wait for me || andre de shields Ain't no compass, brother, there ain't no map Just a telephone wire and the railroad track Keep on walking and you don't look back
And here’s the last Hadestown song on the list. It’s just... really good, okay. Really, really good. xxv. birds || imagine dragons & elisa Seasons, they will change Life will make you grow Dreams will make you cry, cry, cry
I think there’s been an Imagine Dragons song on here every year since they came out with Radioactive. This is the only song of theirs I heard this year, but pairing their voice with Elisa’s was fucking genius because this song makes me feel the chorus in my soul. xxvi. crazy || patsy cline You'd love me as long as you wanted And then some day You'd leave me for somebody new I was at a bar, and my friend has just announced that he was getting married to his girlfriend of ten years in Vegas, on a ferris wheel, by an Elvis impersonator. We started listening to Elvis songs to figure out what he’d play, and then we got distracted listening to a bunch of old love songs. This one is more heartbreak than love, but I’ve always loved Patsy’s voice. xxvii. bury a friend || billie eilish Bury a friend, try to wake up
I was really slow to the Billie Eilish train. One of my friends recommended her music and it’s just so chaotic and fantastic that I can’t believe I didn’t fall for it earlier. This song in particular was a Billy Hargrove song for a while.
xxviii. the seed || aurora Feed me sunlight, feed me air In a place where nothing matters Feed me truth and feed me prayer Aurora’s got one of those truly lovely voices. Also I like songs about how the earth should eat humanity.
xxix.  eleventh dimension || julian casablancas 'Cause no one really cares or wonders why anymore Oh, I got music, coming out of my hands and feet and kisses
Back in 2011, when I was still watching Doctor Who, someone made this video which blew my little heart away. I rediscovered this song while we were driving back to Ohio from our annual beach trip and managed to get everyone in the car hooked on it for weeks afterwards.
xxx. sunflower || post malone You're a sunflower I think your love would be too much
Into the Spiderverse! Was so! Good!
xxxi. what’s up danger || blackway, black caviar I like it all on the edge just like you, ayy I like tall buildings so I can leap off of 'em
So like, that scene, right? The one that had everyone losing their collective shit? I saw gifs before I watched the movie, and goddamn, it lived up to every single expectation I ever had. I made Nick watch it with me, and he groaned a lot because honestly he is not the biggest fan of super hero movies, but even he admitted that it was the best damn Spiderman movie we’d ever seen. It was powerful and clever and heartwarming and funny and the music and animation were both fan-freaking-tastic.
xxxii. bad guy || billie eilish I'm the bad guy, duh Can you believe that I actually didn’t know about this video until @nijuukoo did art? I mean, I’d definitely heard it and liked it before hand, but the fucking video, man. That pic of Vanitas showering Ven in hearts is still the background of my desktop.(It would have been the one of him sitting on Ansem while he’s doing push ups, but it didn’t work with my screen)
xxxiii. elevate || dj khalil I jump off this building to save these civilians My strength and my honor is trusted by children I'm ready and willing to fight all these villains No chaos or killings, my style is so brilliant I really, really liked the music to Into the Spiderverse.
xxxiv. must’ve been || chromeo I must've been high when I met you Out of my mind when I decided to love you
There was a Harringrove fic that I read during the summer that made the connection between this song and modern AU Billy and Steve. I thought it was @lymricks but maybe not. Either way - I listened to this for like three weeks straight while reading about Billy and Steve flirting at the pool. Ha! Found it - you, through half-shut eyes by @brawlite.
xxxv. dark matter || les friction Bring me your soul, bring me your hate In my name you will create Bring me your fear, bring me your pain You will destroy in my name
There was an Outsider fanvid. I tripped over it.
xxxvi. lark of my heart || eliza rickman Lark of my heart - dance in the dark and say you love me Lark of my heart - right from the start and say you love me
This one was another that I found on a random playlist while I was reading and I just love the rhythm of the song. I sat right up and favorited that sucker before I lost it.
xxxvii. dancing on my own — robyn I'm just gonna dance all night I'm all messed up, I'm so outta line Stilettos on broken bottles I'm spinning around in circles Okay. Okay, okay, okay. So there was that tumblr post that went around a while back where a bunch of subway riders who just got back from a Robyn concert started singing while waiting for the train and I just. It makes me so fucking happy. Like, I remember the night I clicked on that video. I’d never heard the song before, but I didn’t need to because the level of fucking joy and unity in that video literally brought tears to my eyes. Sometimes, humans are fucking beautiful.
xxxviii. hungover in the city of dust || autoheart We’re hungover in the city of dust So let our minds run round in circles While we figure it all out
I really adore autoheart. They did Sailor Song, which was on my Top Songs post last year and honestly, according to the plays on spotify, probably should have still been on my list this year, but alas - this is the abridged version. Every song I’ve heard from them I’ve loved. The entire bridge makes me shiver, it’s just so wonderfully executed.
xxxix. season of the witch || lana del rey You've got to pick up every stitch, The rabbits running in the ditch, Oh no, must be the season of the witch In October I watched Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and it was super spooky and really great and probably one of the best movies I saw this year? But like, also this cover by Lana del Rey was the best damn thing about it. Someone made a witchy video that was great too but I can’t find it now. xl. bird song || juniper vale Listen to the sound of my heart beat slow Yeah, my heart's like yours, my heart's like yours Listen to the sound, oh it feels like home When our hearts beat slow together
I really like Juniper Vale. I found them last year when I stumbled across their cover of Singing In The Rain, and they churn out some really quality music.
xli. paradise valley || honey & the sting So you'll have to hold me down Could you just hold me down build the levees higher This song was always going to make it to 2019′s list too. It’s just too damn good. Thank you, Wolf 359. You’ve given me a gift that is still giving three years later.
xlii. my hallelujah || autoheart Thought I found a new religion In you who was I kidding There's nowhere to go Except for under quarantine
More Autoheart! Just listen to that melody! That flow!
xliii. furthest star || dirt poor robins We'll find our hiding place Clear across the Milky Way Beyond the galaxy On the furthest star that we see
This song reminds me a lot of Muse back in their early days. I was half-napping on the couch listening to, you guessed it, a random playlist on spotify, and I liked this song enough to surface from the edges of slumber to favorite it so I could find it again.
xliv. play dirty || kevin mcallister Would you get the Devil this dance? Would you be a part of his plans? Now you got some blood on your hands
There was a fanvid. It was good and basically caught me up on Preacher. The song is also really catchy.
xlv. it’s quiet uptown || kelly clarkson Look at where we are Look at where we started Last year, this was on my list because of an EOS 10 playlist. This year it’s on my list because I still fucking love it. Also I saw Hamilton this year and it was really phenomenal. I cannot get over how good it was.
xlvi. pas de deux || michael abels -instrumental- I watched Us in late October/early November and this entire sequence was really lovely and eerie and just all around fantastic. I loved the mirroring throughout the movie, and it all came together in this stunning confrontation.
xlvii. i got 5 on it || michael abels, luniz, mi I got five on it
Us had a really good soundtrack.
xlviii. one day more || les mis cast One more dawn One more day One day more!
About a month ago I got to see Les Mis in theater and I cried like six or seven times. That is not an exaggeration I was a fucking mess. As much as I’ve adored every musical I have seen up until this point, I have never had a musical affect me the way this one did. It was incredibly powerful and the experience was worth every damn cent.
xlix. into the unknown || idina menzel, aurora Everyone I've ever loved is here within these walls I'm sorry, secret siren, but I'm blocking out your calls
Like, I know it’s cool to hate on Frozen because it got so popular, but Idina Menzel is a queen with the voice of an angel and I’m sorry, but the movies were good. Also, Elsa is very, very pretty and this shit was very, very gay.
l. show yourself || idina menzel & evan rachel wood Come to me now Open your door Don't make me wait One moment more
Sorry, I don’t make the rules. Elsa gets all the best numbers. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, folks. Happy listening.

JOHN KEATS.    the lavender in sunsets,  flowers in the rain,  sunlight slipping through clouds,  lazy summer afternoons,  the heavy scent of musk,  flickering candlelight reflecting off the gold titles of books,  fireflies on a cool summer night,  being wrapped in fresh bed sheets,  the ache of wanting what you can never have, dripping sunlight like gold,  loving someone so exquisite,  soft lips and soft whispers,  fingers through hair,  names of lovers carved in trees,  broken glass,  the insistence of being perpetually dreamy.
F. SCOTT FITZGERALD.    crisp winter skies with cold bright stars,  mahogany wood,  the solitude of an early autumn morning wrapped in fog,  empty bottles on stacks and stacks of books haphazardly placed in a messy room,  bruised arms reaching out into the darkness,  cigarette smoke just barely hiding the scent of alcohol,  a wall of books all poetry and old and weathered,  the way tragedy strikes in your heart but ends up stopping your breathing for a moment,  your favorite sweater, parties spilling into four a.m. with the stars above spinning and dancing,  the contrast of blood against snow,  a purple split lip oozing blood,  black eyes fading to blue to pale skin,  the butterflies of falling in love for the first time, the statues falling apart over time in cemeteries,  the romanticization of self-destruction.
FRANZ KAFKA.   the weight of dread that sits heavily in your stomach when thinking about the future,  decrepit houses cloaked in mystery from children telling stories of people who died there,  the way not even light can escape a black hole,  the rich smell of old books, delicate veins in the wrist,  ghosts filling lungs,  shattered bones,  raindrops on the tongue,  rusting metal,  nostalgia that aches,  the way hope feels like a plastic bag over your head.
H.P. LOVECRAFT.   the anxiety felt when staring into an unknown cave,  pouring rain and mud,  a child’s fear of the dark,  thinking so many questions about your existence as you stare at the vast expanse of never-ending ocean,  the silence of three a.m.,  ouija boards and urban legends.
JACK KEROUAC.   the brisk pine air of being on a mountain,  travels without a destination,  those nights where you’re missing three hours of memory,  screaming to a lifeless desert about how you’re so alive,  coffee shops late at night,  car rides at night spent speeding and laughing in the dark,  naps spent in the sun,  novels highlighted and underlined with notes and epiphanies in the margins,  the way uncertainty sits on the shoulders,  ignoring flaws and loving life,  wind through hair,  depression as fog in the brain,  impossible ideals,  a quiet sunrise,  walks alone, when you think about trying to discover all the secrets to the universe,  dazzling people,  open lands stretching out into infinity,  falling in love with being alive.

RWBY OC Bio: Rusty McGuire.
It’s been a while since I’ve talked about/introduced another RWBY OC, so here’s one that I’ve been working on for the last little while. His name is Rusty McGuire and more info about him will be shared underneath the cut!
Full Name: Russel Archibald McGuire.
Name Meaning{s}:
Russel; French origin - from a surname which meant "little red one".
Rusty; English origin - from a nickname which was originally given to someone with a rusty, or reddish-brown, hair colour. This started out as a nickname that his Father called him, due to his love of machinery/auto mechanics. Eventually, Rusty started to prefer going by this name instead.
Archibald; Scottish & English origin - derived from the Germanic elements ercan, “genuine”, and bald, “bold”.
McGuire; Irish origin - Anglicized form of Irish Mag Uidhir meaning, "son of Odhar". It’s a given name meaning, “pale-colored”.
Alias: While his first name is Russel, he prefers to go by the name Rusty. He’s been going by that name since he was around 11 or 12 years old. He only uses Russel for documents and such.
Nickname{s}: Russ {mostly used by everyone}, Master Mechanic/The Car Doctor {what most of his customers at his shop call him, due to his excellent reputation as a mechanic}, Rust {mostly used by his Older Brother Reed}, Darling/Darlin’ {used by his Ex-Wife when they were together}, Babe/Handsome {only used by Qrow}, Pa/Papa {only used by his Son}.

5 Bits of Trivia:
Rusty was born and raised in the industrial district of Vale. His family had a cottage on Patch, which he has fond memories of staying there during the summer. This was what made him decide that he wanted to live on Patch at some point when he got older. His Father worked in a nearby steel mill, while his Mother worked from home running her own dry cleaning service. His Brother Reed currently teaches at Signal Academy and he’s also still an active Huntsman.
Ever since he was young, Rusty has always had an interest in cars/motor sports. He fondly remembers going to the race track with his Father every other weekend. He’s also been very fond of tinkering with machines/gadgets. He used to help his Father fix things around the house. The first time he ever managed to fix something on his own was when he was 10 years old and it was the family’s toaster.
He’s very much a steak & potatoes kind of guy, but he also loves bacon double cheeseburgers, spinach dip with Cajun pita chips, buffalo wings  with bleu cheese dip, apples, and chili con carne. He doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, however he really dislikes tofu, cranberries and walnuts.
Currently he owns a tow truck, two motorcycles, a four-door truck, and a classic convertible. He has a large four car garage by his home, where he keeps his vehicles.
He’s really into classic rock, but he also loves old school hip-hop and old country music. He isn’t a big fan of the new stuff.
That’s all that I have to share for now about Rusty. If anyone has any comments, questions or critique that they want to share, my inbox is always open! If there’s anything that I need to edit or change, I’ll go back and fix it later!

SCOTT FITZGERALD.  crisp winter skies with cold bright stars, mahogany wood, the solitude of an early autumn morning wrapped in fog, empty bottles on stacks and stacks of books haphazardly placed in a messy room, bruised arms reaching out into the darkness, cigarette smoke just barely hiding the scent of alcohol, a wall of books all poetry and old and weathered, a bad thunderstorm occurring at the end of a beautiful day, the way tragedy strikes in your heart but ends up stopping your breathing for a moment, your favorite sweater, parties spilling into four a.m. with the stars above spinning and dancing, the contrast of blood against snow, a purple split lip oozing blood, black eyes fading to blue to pale skin, the butterflies of falling in love for the first time, the statues falling apart over time in cemeteries, the romanticization of self-destruction.
EDGAR ALLAN POE.  the ocean’s horizon inseparable from fog, hollow bones, a preserved heart held in hands, twinkling stars above an old graveyard, the way everything turns to dust, silent black birds with eyes full of wisdom, self-inflicted flames, perfection depicted as a rotting corpse, death as bricks in the heart, lips barely brushing against each other, glassy glazed eyes, biting into a lemon, heart-shaped bruises, rotting flowers on a grave, dried blood and spilled liquor, the hush of dusk when it begins raining, the intimacy of a secret.

She’s tempted, of course, to look now -- but she holds that base instinct back and focuses on the kid that’s pulled her aside. He’s smiling up at her, small, but still warm and sociable. “There is?” is the first thing out of her mouth. She stretches casually as she pulls  -- lets her hand fall on the hilt of her sword. She’s ready. “You make it a habit to try to save adults you run into on the street?”
