Falcarius is considered the most basal therizinosaurian genus, and considered the transitional dinosaur between the standard theropod bodyplan and the unusual appearance of therizinosaurids. Unlike more advanced therizinosaurs, Falcarius had a propubic pelvis, three-toed feet, and a smaller first toe.

@bgs-cave-o-thots submitted: Hi! This isn't an ID request, I just wanted to talk about a bug phenomenon that happens near where I live. I remember being shocked when I was younger and learned that this doesn't happen everywhere, and I think that's what gave me a fascination for these bugs instead of only seeing them as a nuisance.

I've no clue what the scientific name is, but I see them called the Klamath Midge after where they're primarily found (Klamath County, Oregon). They're small, bright green, non-biting midges, and when they're in season they make dense swarms that can be the size of city blocks. People have to sweep them off windowsills and porches every morning or they'll pile up, because they only live for I think a couple days. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of my own to demonstrate the sheer amount of the lil guys there are, but if you google "klamath midge" there's plenty of images that give you an idea.

I also have a question about these midges that I was wondering if you or your followers might be able to answer. I've lived with these things coming out every year for most of my life but no one I've ever asked knew the answer for sure: what do these guys eat? Or do they even eat as adults at all??

Hello! Klamath midges are non-biting midges in the genus Chironomus. Sounds like utahensis is the exact species. Midge larvae are aquatic and feed on algae and other organic detritus. The adults were once thought not to eat at all, but apparently newer research says they feed sparingly on things like nectar, pollen, and honeydew. But you're right, they only live a couple of days! Just long enough to mate.

I couldn't find any creative commons photos of the swarms to share, but I do think it's worth googling for those who are curious! That's a lot of bugs.

Many plants have specially adapted leaves to reduce water loss. They may have spiny, waxy, or hairy leaves that reduce the impact of solar radiation. They may ooze light-colored salt onto the surfaces of their leaves to reflect light. Some plants simply drop their leaves if water is unavailable. The Utah juniper tree (Juniperus utahensis) will stop water flow to certain parts of itself when moisture is scarce, thus allowing some outer branches to die, to give the tree itself a better chance for survival.

Another method plants use is the establishment of elaborate root systems. When mature, the root system of the pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) is at least as large as the above-ground portion of the tree with tap roots stretching 40 feet or more down, with lateral roots stretching just as far horizontally.

　そろそろヒーターは閉まってもいいのでしょうか。あと今日はくしゃみが酷く出たのはイネ花粉か何かでしょうか。

　研究をちゃんとしていると、何かの情報は摂取しているけれどもするすると流れていき何も覚えていない。気づいたら5月も終わりかけていてまだ書く準備ばかりをしていて書いておらず、寝る前にただただ不安になって胃が痛くなる。明日からは書けそうだけど。

　今日は何か届いたと思ったら、種子だった。楽しみが播種しかないので、いつの間にか種子を買っている。蒔いて満足している自分がいる。今日届いたのはAgave utahensis var. nevadensis。アガベはチタノタとユタエンシスの変種だかサブスピーシーズであるエボリスピナが滅法高い。他のユタエンシス系も他のアガベよりちょっとだけ高い。ユタエンシス系は耐暑・耐寒性が高く、-18℃まで耐えるらしいので少し大きくしたら、庭に植えておきたい。東京の端っこのほうに住んでいるとはいえ-5℃よりも低くなることはないので大丈夫かと思われる。

　あとここ最近買ってまだ届いていないものとしては、アデニア・イサロエンシス、ステロクリア・ロゲルシー／リンコカルパ、パキポディウム・イノピナツム、エンタダ・レプトスタキア／レティキュラータ。ステロクリアは大きくなると木になるらしいため、盆栽的に育てるものらしい。といっても、やっぱり情報がなくて播種の仕方の正解はわからない。現地球の株を輸入した、という写真をTwitterで見かけたが、ただの木では？という感じだった。灌木系は表皮が剥けるとか、葉が特徴的だ、といったことがない限り、そこら辺の木でいいのではないだろうか、と思ってしまう。エンタダのほうはジャックと豆の木のモチーフとなったもので、世界で一番大きい豆としてお馴染みの種類。買った2種がどの程度大きい種子かは届いてみないとわからない。こちらもやっぱり情報がないけれども、エンタダを蒔いた人の情報によると、やはり殻が分厚いため削って給水させる方法らしい。マメ科の葉は昼は開き、夜は閉じるという休眠運動をするので好き。家にはセンナ・メリオディナスしかないけど。エレファントリザとかほしいけどなかなか見かけない。

　あとは専門書をぱらぱらと頼んだ。

It’s really hard to get good photos of the seedlings when I’ve put them in such small containers, also please ignore all the dust everywhere!

First photo: the only two (out of five) dracaena draco seeds that germinated, I think I sowed them like six weeks ago? I’m not sure!
