30 days of Harvest Moon - day 16. mining / fight
LUMINA USED ROCK-ET LAUNCH!
honestly is it really a farming sim if it doesn’t have a girls gauntlet fight that activates at 4:44 AM in the mines through your doghouse where the girlies take turns trying to beat you to death by throwing their love interests at you 🤔

From tgarnsl:
tea au / fuck it what if they were samurai, please? :-)
Tumblr media
as usual, I don't have much of the actual written component of the story to share (I'm still figuring out what various people are named, and how they ought to refer to each other) but this time I do have a picture of the whole tea set setup that I made for the story!
the fic premise I'm currently working out sets the canon storyline in early Tokugawa-period Japan, and rather than having the first meeting take place in mid-summer, places it in late autumn/early winter, as that's when this tea set is designed for!

Les Mis 1.2.2
Following up from Pilf’s post, because clothing is the topic I have stuff to say about. [Also the rest of the action feels very natural follow ups from the previous 15 chapters: the people and house we met in 1.1.1-14 are about to encounter the guy having an awful day in 1.2.1, and this is Hugo’s set up for that.]
Caveat: my main research area is the mid-19th century (right around the time Hugo was finishing Les Mis, not the years it is set), and my working language is English. The US in 1860 is not France in 1815-1832, but I think some elements here do transfer over, or at least offer insight into how Hugo’s readers might have interpreted the text.
Main observations re: Baptistine Myriel’s clothing:
9 years is a very long time for a dress in active use. Washing and non-washing dresses will have different trajectories, but in contemporary non-fiction, making a silk dress last 7 years is a feat of clever planning and care. Five years is noteworthy. One to two years is more typical, and 3 months isn’t necessarily a frivolous waste (wearing a silk dress only once would be). Much like with the soup thing, the Myriel household is taking ‘practicing good economy’ to an extreme, almost absurd degree.
Also, the fact that Mlle Baptistine is still wearing her silk dress “in the style of 1806″ in 1815 is notably weird. Fiction and non-fiction sources of the 1850s/60s show economically-minded women remodeling their silks every season in order to keep up to date. Magazine articles give instructions for turning last year’s flounced skirts into gored ones, or adding puffed overskirts to update narrow gored skirts. Advice books recommend getting an extra yard or two of fabric so that you can update the sleeves of your dress when it’s taken apart for washing. Trousseaus should have some of the dresses left “unmade” (as lengths of fabrics) in case fashions change over the year. A missionary woman writing from not-yet-Seattle in the mid-1850s opines that the dresses she made for her wedding less than a year earlier are too “rusty” to be worn at home (in New York) but are sufficient for living in the woods.
So my impression of Baptistine is that she’s meant to be The Superlatively Economical gentlewoman, and also Not At All Vain About Clothes. She’s not spending her time or money on fashion, but the fact that she is still bothering to wear a silk gown for dinner is signalling that she’s still performing (her class’s) respectability. From this, and her letter about re-doing her room, I expect that her whole wardrobe and all the house’s domestic interiors are scrupulously clean and mended, but also old and likely inharmonious. The two women will do the work to live respectably, but will not spend any unnecessary money on their own comfort or aesthetics.
Hugo taking the trouble to describe Baptistine’s dress (”short waist, a narrow, sheath-like skirt, puffed sleeves, with flaps and buttons”) just reminds me of how much crinoline-era Victorians do not like the Neoclassical look. All of these specific elements are basically the opposite of early 1860s fashion--waists are worn just at/above the natural waist, skirts are about as wide as they can get, more fitted coat sleeves are replacing the wide-open sleeves of the late 1850s. It’s a bit different from how most modern folks seem to view the 1810s style (Austen! Romance! Bridgerton?): I’ll need to dig through my notes, but there’s at least one 1850/60s cartoon and one article I recall which amount to ‘yikes, the fashions of 50 years ago were awful’, and another article from the late 1860s which holds that the crinoline is a great improvement on the raised-waistline silhouette. I think we all prefer to ignore the weirdness of the c.1865-9 Second Empire style, but there were absolutely pairing high waistlines with fitted sleeves and trained skirts over elliptical or half-hoops (transitioning from the rounder cages of the late 1850s and early 1860s into the bustles of the early 1870s).

also i was pulling out my old spreadsheets to look for those vault facts and heres another fucking insane one that i found in a DIFFERENT spreadsheet. I once made a spreadsheet cataloguing what players had the most stars (just pitching for rotation, just batting for lineup) by season, and found that across 24 seasons there were 17 different players in the top half star.
predictably enough, the crabs were 1) the ONLY team to have more than one player ranking in the top half star on their active roster at once: crabs (nagomi mcdaniel and axel trololol, s7 and 8). and 2) the team with players ranking in the top half star on their active roster for the most consecutive seasons: crabs (4 in a row, s6–9) (the most anyone else has is 2)
but what surprised me was this: the team that had the most seasons with a player ranking in the top half star on their roster, AND the team who had the most different players ranking in the top half star? THE FRIDAYS. we had 5 different seasons where a player on our roster ranked in the top half star on our roster (beating the crabs by 1), and we had THREE different players who ranked in the top half star at the time they were on our roster (york silk, nagomi mcdaniel, and beck whitney). which is insane because the most anyone else has is 2.

Americans with representation in congress, today (4/19/24) is a really really good day to call your senators and house rep and urge them to vote NO on sending more weapons and funding to Israel. There's an emergency vote coming up to send billions worth of weapons to Israel.
Ceasefire Now.

Pixlriffs esmp s2 backstory HC where he was a student & teacher at an University :)
The College of Archeology, History, and Research was known worldwide as one of the best universities (and also one of the most difficult ones to get into). It was a gigantic university mixed with an archive and research facility, all in one building. When Pix was but a youngster, he dreamt of going to that college. So he was ecstatic when he got accepted basically immediately.
This is also where he met Winchester. The college -their main goal being preserving the past- had taken it upon themselves to hold and look after a family of almost extinct dodos. The dodos had their own area in the courtyard and all students (no matter which course they followed) had classes on how to take care of the creatures.
The family existed out of the two parent dodos, their three daughters, their two sons and.. Winchester.
See, Winchester siblings were very social and always absolutely delighted to see students. Perfect examples of how dodos truly were. Smart, kind, and helpful. Winchester was the complete opposite of what a dodo should be. He was an absolute menace.
He'd scream through the teachers' explanations, bite students and steal people's pens and notebooks. The college didn't quite know what to do with him. After all, getting rid of one of the rarest creatures on earth simply because they were uncooperative would be horrible for their reputation.
But everything changed when Pix joined the university and had his first lesson with the dodos. Because Winchester was obsessed. For the entire duration of the classes, Winchester would just stare at Pix with wide eyes and very silently follow him around the courtyard. Sometimes, when Pix would be standing still and Winchester got brave enough, he'd stand behind Pixl and observe the notes that were being taken.
To this day, no one really knows why Winchester was so mesmerized by Pix. But the college was more than delighted with the news and heavily encouraged Pix to continue attending the Dodo classes, even after the classes had been completed. Pix, although slightly hesitant at first, accepted and continued going. He got a bit more comfortable when being allowed to spend time with the bird alone and eventually they got very close. Pix learned Winchester multiple tricks and eventually, Winchester proved himself to be rather useful during research. He would be more than happy to carry books, retrieve items and chase away the other students if Pix felt like he wanted to have the archive for himself (which was never the case, but Winchester still did it for him with love).
When Pix graduated and applied to the college to become a teacher, he got Winchester appointed to him as his personal assistant. After a couple years, Pix moved on from giving classes to actual field research where he was allowed to take Winchester with him. That's how he ended up in the Ancient Capital :D

i don't think i've seen anyone else talk about this so i will: i think it's pretty, hm, important? significant? something like that, that Amphibia, the land itself, lost the Calamity Box permanently. it was an item used by an empire to invade, conquer, and destroy other worlds. it was used to power weapons of mass destruction. it was used to exploit their own ecosystems. the Guardian said the stones were never used "for good" and yeah based on the way Andrias and the Core acted, and just the knowledge that empires (no matter how "prosperous" for their citizens they are) are built on the backs of others, pretty sure that rings true. now, when the music box was lost the first time it didn't solve anything. in fact, because of the circumstances around the Calamity Box's disappearance, a restrictive caste system was put into place in Amphibia. because there were those who believed the box could still be found and the Newtopian army could go right back to what they were doing.
But now the box is gone forever, its last act a good one, and those that wanted to use it for evil were destroyed by their own last descendant. now Amphibia can start over and build a new, better world, with healthy relationships between the different species of amphibians. the youngest generation is setting out to explore all of Amphibia and see everything it has to offer, inspired by the scruffy teenage girl who used the stones' power to help others. no more prophecies, no more empires, no more doomsday weapons lighting up the night sky.
if a new portal were to be built, i would want it to be built by the inhabitants of Amphibia or Dr. Jan and Terri. that way it would be something built out of love and genuine scientific pursuit, not a morality test by a god.

Pearl's new hermitcraft video gives me such lore vibes I am just,,,,,, thinking,,,,,, thinking about what?,,,,,, I don't know,,,,,,, maybe Pearl could be a warden descendant,,,,,, I don't know,,,,,,,
like what if she doesn't know she's a warden descendant and she's an agent that observes and does agent stuff with aliens and finds that they're connected to the wardens so she studies and analyze the wardens and she sees correlations to wardens and herself and goes "wait a minute."

Aside from not contributing as much as to microplastics and pollution I think items made from animals are important in that they are just.... Easier to respect? Like arguably this could go for items made from wood too, but items made from feathers, leathers, furs, horns, and bones are very immediately recognizable as being from something that was once alive, it feels easier to carry in your heart that this is an item that needs to be cared for and kept track of, it was once part of a creature not unlike yourself, after all
