UN helicopter captured by al-Shabaab after making emergency landing, UN spokesman confirms
By CNN, 10:52am Jan 11, 2024
A United Nations helicopter carrying several passengers has been captured by terror group al-Shabaab in Somalia after making an emergency landing in an area controlled by the group.
An assessment team is being prepared, UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT), confirming the helicopter capture.
The UN emergency assistance helicopter made an emergency landing likely due to a mechanical issue in Somalia's Galmudug region, which is controlled by the al-Qaeda-affiliated terror group, according to the state-run Somali National News Agency (SONNA).

There were eight passengers on board, including foreigners, an a rescue is underway, according to SONNA.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) said the helicopter "was conducting an air medical evacuation" and that more information would be released when it becomes available.
This comes weeks after Maalim Ayman, a senior leader of the al-Shabaab militant group operating in Somalia and Kenya, was killed on December 17 by a joint military operation between the Somali and US forces.
Somali Minister for Information Daud Aweis announced the death of Ayman on Friday.
"Ayman was accountable for planning multiple lethal terrorist attacks in Somalia and nearby countries," Aweis said in a statement on social media at the time.
Ayman is responsible for a terrorist attack on US and Kenyan personnel at Kenya's Manda Bay Airfield on January 5, 2020, US officials say.

BBC 0425 11 Jan 2024
12095Khz 0400 11 JAN 2024 - BBC (UNITED KINGDOM) in ENGLISH from TALATA VOLONONDRY. SINPO = 55334. English, newsroom preview. @0401z World News anchored by Chris Berrow. The UN security council has called for an immediate end to attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on shipping in the Red Sea, adopting a resolution despite abstentions from Russia and China. A key provision of Wednesday’s security council resolution – which was sponsored by the US and Japan – noted the right of UN member states, in accordance with international law, “to defend their vessels from attack, including those that undermine navigational rights and freedoms”. Ecuador President Daniel Noboa said on Wednesday his country was "at war" with drug gangs who are holding prison guards hostage, amid a dramatic surge in violence that saw gunmen briefly take over a TV live broadcast and explosions in multiple cities. Noboa on Tuesday named 22 gangs as terrorist organizations, making them official military targets. The president took power in November pledging to tackle a growing security problem caused by a rise in drug-trafficking gangs transporting cocaine through Ecuador. Former Surinamese President Desi Bouterse, whose conviction for involvement in the killing of 15 people more than four decades ago was upheld in December, must report to a jail to serve his sentence, the public prosecutor said on Wednesday. Republican presidential candidates Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley have traded insults at the CNN debate ahead of the Iowa caucuses. The two candidates are hoping to eat into frontrunner Donald Trump's big lead in the polls ahead of the first true test with voters. The former President once again opted not to participate in the debate and instead appeared at a Fox News town hall event. Haley and DeSantis both criticised Trump's record but dodged a question about his character. On Monday, Republican members in Iowa will be the first in the US to vote for their preferred presidential candidate. The Somali armed Islamist group al-Shabab has seized a United Nations helicopter, along with about eight people, both passengers and crew. The helicopter landed in territory held by the group in central Somalia. The UN's mission in Somalia (Unsom) confirmed an "aviation incident" involving a UN-contracted helicopter conducting a medical evacuation. It did not mention al-Shabab, but said "response efforts are under way". Alabama will be allowed to put an inmate to death with nitrogen gas later this month, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, clearing the way for what would be the nation’s first execution using a new method the inmate’s lawyers criticize as cruel and experimental. The US has made the long-awaited decision to allow Bitcoin to be part of mainstream investing funds. The announcement from the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission was accompanied by a stern warning about risks associated with the asset. @0406z "The Newsroom" begins. Somalia is currently facing several challenges, including political instability, armed conflict, widespread poverty, and lack of basic services. The country has been experiencing decades of civil war and violence, resulting in the displacement of millions of people and the breakdown of institutions and infrastructure.
The lack of a central government and weak governance structures have allowed armed groups, such as al-Shabaab, to thrive and control certain areas of the country. This has led to ongoing violence, terrorist attacks, and targeted killings, particularly against government officials, security forces, and civilians.
The economy of Somalia is largely informal and lacks diversification. Poverty and unemployment rates are high, and access to education, healthcare, clean water, and electricity is limited. The country's agricultural sector, which is the main source of income for many people, has been severely affected by droughts and climate change.
Somalia also faces humanitarian crises, including famine and displacement. The combination of conflict, drought, and economic challenges has led to food shortages and malnutrition. Millions of people are in need of humanitarian assistance, including access to food, water, healthcare, and shelter.
International efforts, including the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), are working to support the government and promote stability and development. However, the road to recovery and progress remains long and challenging for Somalia.

Analysis: Somalia's President and Opposition Battle for International Support Amid Delayed Elections
Analysis: Somalia’s President and Opposition Battle for International Support Amid Delayed Elections
On March 8, in a letter to Somalia’s key foreign partners, the Council of Presidential Candidates (CPC) demanded the president hand over key powers to the prime minister, alleging Villa Somalia can no longer negotiate a path to holding elections in good faith due to ongoing abuses of power.  Since reaching an agreement last September on an alternative electoral model in place of a popular vote,…

As Somalia combats insecurity, drought worsens ‘more rapidly than projected’ – UN official
The humanitarian crisis in Somalia is worsening, a senior United Nations official told the Security Council, calling for more than $800 million in aid to offset the impact of a severe drought in a country that is already battling insecurity and poverty.
