278. Edge Of Doom (1950)

#edge of doom #edge of doom (1950)#2023filmgifs #my gifs #that was sooo much more nuanced and rageful than i expected #genuinely startled to hear such anti-church things expressed #in a Hays Code era film #but of course it was bookended by a lot of proper religiosity #and the voiceover was there to remind us #but i really loved how brutal and unsentimental the dialogue was #and how good all the performances were #i only wanted to hit Farley Granger a few times #he irritates me so much #but he was actually quite excellent here #and totally broke my heart when he said 'it seemed like no one cared'#of course i was there for Dana in a priest collar #and it was so fascinating to compare his performance #with Montgomery Clift in I Confess #in such similar stories #very different affect #Dana looks at everyone like he might consider snogging them #but the subtext with Farley Granger #definitely brought a strong queer energy to this #of course that might be my slash goggles lolz #also really loved the cinematography #i just love black and white film so much

Fyodor has anemia and you get a boner with the help of blood circulation, in which you need a specific amount of iron or, like, blood for it. Can he actually even get one? Hmmm in my five minutes of research I've gathered that if his anemia is particularly bad it could cause erectile dysfunction, but anemia alone isn't a cause of ED. If he was already exhausted or sick it might compile and mean he can't keep it up for long, but it should still get up, if yanno what I mean.

Butttt again, if it's a bad case of anemia he would be prone to weakness and get easily fatigued and shaky, so it's very unlikely that he's gonna be a dom top for long without needing to rest. He's gonna need a power bottom, not a pillow princess, is my non-professional opinion.

if you dont mind, who's the character kyr you posted about? what book are you reading? i need recs--please!

About 50% of the way through some desperate glory. Kyr is the main character! This book has been getting a lot of advertisement for being in the same microgenre as tlt--basically having to do with queer characters & some type of empire. I'm waiting until the end to decide exactly what I think of it, but what I can say is I'm having a good time

#tamsyn muir called it 'unsentimental' but personally i don't find it that way i think the narrative is sympathetic to the characters #see y'all don't believe me when i tell you she's a sap #anyway. i read the author's two novellas while waiting for this book to become available at the library #and i'd say there's a change in style between those and this book. her language becomes much more spare but characterization gets better #well. characterization of the women gets more interesting i should say #she does the thing where her protags feel completely believable but some of the side characters lack depth #again not as much of a problem in this book because everyone just gets more page time #i have some thoughts re: its portrayal of empire/resistance to it and re: cleo but. again i am only halfway through #it's a book i have had fun thinking about #replies #sff book club

actually one of the funniest parts of journal three is when ford and fiddles find shifty and ford immediately latches onto them like "oh! look at this wonderful shapeshifting creature! fiddleford we have to keep it, they're our child now <3" and fiddles is just like Stanford That Thing Is Of the Devil

#after fiddles is attacked it becomes MUCH less funny #but i do still love that dynamic of that couple pages before #where ford is like cooing over shifty like they're a child he and fiddles just adopted like 'oh shifty spoke yesterday and has such a great #personality and sometimes they look like a cute little puppy and they're so smart! my bf is just unsentimental because he sees them as #livestock which is so mean :('#also i accidentally called shifty 'shapey' at first which is SO unfair. the weird mess of a quasi-family dynamic that ford had with shifty #and tried to rope fiddles into is still more healthy than whatever the fuck the puppingtons have going on at any point in time
