wangxian modern quarantine au! warning for quarantine and covid references
Lan Wangji doesn’t touch other people.
He doesn’t remember when, exactly, this started being true. Sometime after Mother died, but before he left for boarding school. Xichen enjoyed touch, would ruffle Wangji’s hair, nudge their feet together under the dinner table, but when he left for school, Uncle never so much as pat Wangji’s shoulder. Lan Wangji doesn’t fault Uncle for his own aversion to affection, but he assumes it must have contributed to his current relationship to touching in some way.
The point is, Lan Wangji doesn’t like touching other people, and yet, by the third month of quarantine, he is craving it.
It’s ridiculous. It isn’t as if quarantine has drastically changed the amount of tangible affection he receives on a weekly basis -- before lock down started, the most touching he had to endure was from Wei Ying, which was as inconsistent as it was devastating. A tipsy Wei Ying leaning into his chest, a brush of fingers as they exchanged utensils before a meal, a brief press of Wei Ying’s smiling cheek into Wangji’s shoulder when he said something that made Wei Ying laugh.
These moments were important, at least to Wangji, but by no means frequently occurring enough to warrant an addiction and subsequent withdrawal, and yet Wangji sits in his apartment, meditating, trying to clear his mind, and all he can think about is hugging Wei Ying.
The third month of quarantine is spent, in addition to adjusting to online interactions for work and school, daydreaming about touching Wei Ying. And not even in an untoward way! He daydreams about sitting next to him on the couch, or letting Wei Ying use his thigh as a pillow, or -- Heavens help him -- holding hands.
On the fourth month, Wei Ying texts him with several emojis and the words no pressure bc i know u don’t wanna risk ur uncle’s health, but would u be down for a totally properly socially distanced dinner tomorrow night????
Lan Wangji, for one of the first times in his life, is grateful for texting, if only for the fact that he can’t say yes as desperately fast as he would’ve in person.
Dinner happens on the balcony of Wei Ying’s small apartment, his tiny plastic porch table filled with take-out. They sit on either end of the balcony, a little less than two meters between them. Wei Ying talks with his mouth full and gestures so vigorously with his utensils that spicy red sauce goes flying across the table. Lan Wangji drinks it all in like a drowning man might gasp in air.
“--and Uncle must be faking his Zoom incompetency at his point, there’s no way anyone could be that bad at it. I think he just pretends so Madam Yu has to set everything up, which of course frustrates her to no end, and then Jiang Cheng tries to help and gets so red in the face that he looks like a slightly pixelated tomato. So every call starts off on a bad note, but that’s alright because then shijie puts Jin Ling on the screen and we all shut up and look at how cute he is--”
Lan Wangji is accustomed to the weight of his own feelings for Wei Ying, and it isn’t as if he hasn’t spoken with Wei Ying at all since quarantine started, but it’s just so good to have Wei Ying in front of him, laughing and talking and moving and here. Lan Wangji wants to touch him so badly his skin aches.
He knows why he shouldn’t. The virus, of course -- he still sees Uncle regularly and Wei Ying is hoping to visit his sister and her newborn son this weekend, Wei Ying picked up the food for them, Lan Wangji walked over, the possibility of either of them having contracted it is low but not zero -- but more than that, even, is that Lan Wangji has no idea how to ask.
“Wei Ying,” he tries to visualize the words, “Wei Ying, may I hug you?”
Wei Ying would probably blink, scrunch up his nose in that way he does when attacking a particularly difficult problem set for his courses. He’d probably shrug, agree, confused, or, worse, suspect Lan Wangji’s intentions are impure and suffer through it awkwardly. It isn’t unusual for friends to ask for hugs, but Lan Wangji asking for a hug? Unheard of.
If Wangji hadn’t spent the past three months wishing to see Wei Ying in person, he would probably be so distracted by his thoughts of touching that he wouldn’t hear a single word Wei Ying says. Fortunately, his obsessive touching thoughts aren’t enough to draw his attention away from Wei Ying’s happy rambling, and so he manages to get through the meal without giving himself a coronary.
When it’s been at least an hour since either of them have touched a bite of food and the sky has gone so dark that they can hardly see one another across the table, Wei Ying says, “Ah, I guess I’d better let you leave.”
Lan Wangji doesn’t ask to stay, but it’s a near thing. They put their masks back on and Wangji helps clean up, despite Wei Ying’s protests, and when everything is away and Lan Wangji has his leftovers in a plastic bag, Wei Ying walks him the four steps to the front door and his eyes squint above his mask.
“Thanks for coming,” he says, rocking on his feet. “I know you’re trying to keep your uncle safe and stuff, but I really missed you.”
Lan Wangji’s chest clenches as he stops breathing for a moment. He wants to tell Wei Ying how desperately he’s been missed as well but all he says is, “Mn.”
Wei Ying’s eyes squint tighter. “We should do this again. Soon.”
Lan Wangji manages to nod.
Wei Ying nods back, and this is it. This is the moment where Lan Wangji should turn and leave and look forward to their next meal together, try to figure out on his walk how to reasonably quantify “soon,” arrive home to a plethora of indecipherable emojis on his phone from Wei Ying to smile at, alone in his apartment.
The thought of that, though, of standing alone in his apartment with only an inadequate proxy of Wei Ying’s presence to accompany him, has Lan Wangji saying, “Wei Ying.”
Wei Ying’s eyebrows go up, expectant.
Lan Wangji swallows around his suddenly dry mouth. He should leave. He shouldn’t give himself away like this, but oh -- oh, how he wants to. “Wei Ying, may I -- hug you?”
Wei Ying blinks, once, twice, and then his eyes squint thinner than they have all night. “Of course!” he says, and steps right in, arms coming up around Lan Wangji’s shoulders. It takes Wangji a moment to coordinate his own hands, one occupied by the leftovers, but he raises his free hand and presses it into the center of Wei Ying’s back, holding him close.
He’s warm and firm and right there, his chin settling perfectly on Lan Wangji’s shoulder, his hands pressed into Lan Wangji’s neck and shoulder blade. His thin t-shirt is soft and worn, his hair messy, fly-aways tickling Lan Wangji’s cheek. He smells familiar and cozy and Lan Wangji can’t help the way he presses his face in closer, wanting to get more of the scent only to remember he’s wearing a face mask.
Wei Ying doesn’t ask him why, doesn’t question it or tease Wangji, even when the hug goes on longer than Wangji thinks regular hugs do (he doesn’t have much experience in the area). When they finally disconnect, Wei Ying stays only half a meter away, closer than they’ve been the whole night. His eyes are still smiling. He says, “Thank you,” nonsensically and Lan Wangji only nods.
He does leave, after that, as much as he would like to curl up on Wei Ying’s second-hand couch and snuggle (Heavens, what’s become of him?). But the sense memory of Wei Ying, close, warm, smiling, gets him through the next week, until they have dinner again, and he doesn’t even have to ask before Wei Ying is opening his arms.

LOVE BY CHANCE / THARNTYPE
1. the count up series by sweetiejelly - Tin/Can - ~34,000 words, explicit - A fix-it fic post-canon where Tin and Can slowly work out their issues with some missteps and learning along the way.
So two weeks later, when Can first does it, Tin doesn't know what to do. For the longest while, he just turns off his phone screen. And then turns it back on.
good night, tin. it's been a while but i promised to say good night. so, good night, sleep well.
Every damn time the text is still there.
In the end, Tin deletes it.
The next morning, Can does it again.
good morning, tin. looks like rain today. don't forget your umbrella.
Tin deletes it.
The texts keep coming.
2. ** LBC Aftermath series by Mara - LBC/TharnType crossover- ~6700 words, mature - Were you too horrified by Techno’s ending in LBC? This author feels your pain and did her part to get some justice for Techno. This fic has zero sympathy for Kengkla, which I deeply appreciated. This will help you work out some of your anger. It features LBC!Techno and the TharnType versions of Tharn and Type. Mind the warnings, since this deals with the serious consequences of Kengkla’s actions.
Kengkla stayed at the house through the morning and Techno was so jumpy he nearly leaped out of his skin every time Kla looked at him or talked to him. Even though Kla had explained what happened and how he wasn’t upset to be dating, Techno still felt weird. He kind of wished he remembered what had happened. A guy should remember how he lost his virginity, right?
Kla grabbed him in a big hug and Techno froze, managing a weak grin when Kla pulled back to smile at him. “I’ve got to go home now. But I’ll call you later. Let me know if you go somewhere.”
“O-okay.” Techno stared as the boy let himself out the front door.
3. 5 + 1 by strokeofluck - Tin/Can- ~3600 words, rated general - This is a sweet story about the times when Pete sees Tin having feelings for Can.
Pete weighed his options as he glanced back and forth between Tin and Can. Can didn’t seem to be bothered by the whole thing, he even had a shy smile on his face. Or at least, Pete thought it was a shy smile, he had never really seen this kind of expression coming from Can before.
He could let this whole thing go, he supposed, but he didn’t really want to. It was time for him to finally say to Tin: I told you so.
“You were born in Bangkok,” he said, casting a wide net and hoping Can would find himself caught in it.
Can did.
4. That Testified Surprise by Mara - Techno/Tharn/Type - ~7000 words, mature - This is a LBC canon rewrite that stars the TharnType version of all three characters. Type realizes something is not...quite...right with Kengkla and invites Techno to stay with him and Tharn instead of going home drunk.
Pouring Techno into the passenger seat, Type sat down in the driver’s seat and pulled the phone out to check it, entering the passcode. (The passcode was the birthday of Thai national football team captain Siwarak Tedsungnoen, of course. Duh.)
Fuck, it looked like Nic had been either texting or calling every 20 minutes since they got to the bar. What was up there?
Scrolling back through the evening’s texts, Type scowled harder. Loving brother or not, this was fucking creepy. Going back farther, it looked like it was a pattern. Did the kid do anything other than pester his brother about his whereabouts?
THARNTYPE
5. everything he wants by minkit - ~5100 words, explicit - Type accidentally ruins one of Tharn’s shirts and agrees to do whatever Tharn wants to make up for it. Which means it’s porn stretched over the bare bones of a plot, and it’s great.
Tharn’s hands moved across the bed, slowly, inch by inch and it was frustrating because Type knew they were heading to him, but Tharn took his sweet time. And then they were covering his hands and Tharn’s face was mere centimeters from his and Type could barely breathe. It took everything he had not to lean forward and capture those lips that also belonged to him, but he had a feeling if he tried, Tharn wouldn’t let him. He had that look on his face and Type knew what it meant.
He knew he was in for a long rest of the night.
6. You’ve Got Mail by perthbysaint - ~7800 words, explicit - Type sends Tharn nudes at the most inconvenient times.
A selfie? From Type? Tharn was thanking all of his lucky stars as he happily taps to load the image. The picture loads and Tharn’s phone slips from his suddenly lax grip. Convinced he couldn’t have just seen what he thought he just saw, he picks his phone up hastily and stares very intently at the picture.
It’s a mirror selfie, obviously taken in a changing room, but that thought comes secondary to thighs. Type is holding the camera in front of his face to take the picture, shirt clenched in his other hand and pulled up slightly to show off the shorts. The fucking shorts. He had seen Type in his soccer gear before and yes, Type has most definitely asked for the wrong size and Tharn is more grateful than he’s ever been for anything in his whole life. The shorts are riding up so high they can’t cover more than a few inches of skin, Type’s smooth, powerful thighs on full display. On the inside of his left thigh, there’s a tiny purple mark peeking out from under the bottom of the shorts. Tharn knows exactly what it is because he was the one who left it there just two days ago when he sucked marks into Type’s thighs for a half-hour before he slung Type’s legs over his shoulders and ate him out until Type was sobbing fat tears and begging Tharn to let him come.
7. pet names series by LokelaniRose - ~50,000 words, explicit - A series of post-episode fics that gives us the sex that the show only hinted at, starting with the shower scene.
Tharn prides himself on his self-control. All his passion and intensity is saved for his music, when he’s safely behind a drum kit and can let it all out. He’s never been as irritated by anyone else as he is by Type and all his playground bullying nonsense. Something about the other boy just shakes something loose inside him, rattles at Tharn’s iron discipline until he has to grit his teeth constantly not to just – what? Kiss him? Kill him? Tharn has enough composure (and pride) to put up a front that’s all smiles and wry amusement, but really he regularly skips between one of two daydreams – twisting Type’s head off or fucking him into the ground.
(Tharn is absolutely not going to admit to the third set of daydreams, of curling up around Type when he’s cold or cheering him on at matches or bringing him home to meet Tharn’s father. Nope, no, definitely not.)
2MOONS SERIES
8. ** The universe where we do not commit reckless, unlubricated buttsex by startledoctopus - Forth/Beam - ~8700 words, explicit - This is a great story about Beam giving in and trying to seduce Forth the same way he seduced all of those girls in his past. This Forth is great, and the story retcons their first time to something far more pleasant for Beam.
   "We're heading into a unit on disorders of the spine and I need to review my basic skeletal and muscular anatomy. But it feels stupid to keep studying these weird-looking diagrams and drawings." None of this was, strictly speaking, factual, but an engineering major wouldn't know any different. Beam gathered up all his bravado, walked behind Forth, and began rucking up his shirts as if this were completely normal.
   "What! I..."
   "Shut up, I need to look at a real back so I know what I'll be looking at as a doctor." Forth let him take the shirts off, glancing back at him several times but giving in meekly to Beam's stern look. Forth shuffled the papers some more.
   "All right. Okay, um...Ah!" Beam smirked at Forth's reaction as he ran his thumbs down the nape of his neck.
9. Good Things Come To by sweetiejelly - Ming/Kit - ~4300 words, explicit - Kit gets drunk and reveals more of his feelings for Ming than he probably means to.
"Hmm." Kit closes his eyes and leans his head back on the headrest. "Ming, Ming, Ming. Do you know your name's a kiss? I'm kissing the air everytime I say 'Ming'!" Kit pops his mouth and it pops Ming's mind a bit. "And then I think about kissing you. Why do you make me think about you so damn much? You're so annoying, Ming. No one's ever..." and Kit leans to the side, almost like he's going to conk out or throw up, only to straighten back up. "... made me this crazy."
Oh shit. Ming doesn't know what to do with all of this information. He knew somewhere deep down that Kit likes him. Kit's eyes can't lie. Kit's mouth can't either, the cusses coming out whenever he's keyed up and flustered, and then there are his kisses.
10 + 11. ** how to fail flirt your way into his heart (a guide by Kit) and a little conversation (and a little action please) by sweetiejelly - Ming/Kit - ~30,000 words, explicit in the second part - This story makes a tiny plot divergence. It has Kit put a little more effort into finding out if Ming is really into Yo and then from there, it loosely follows the plot of the show with some key differences. I really enjoyed this.
"Can I have your number?" Kit mentally face-palms. Why? Damn Pha. Damn Beam. Just damn everything, ugh. He has never flirted in his life. Pin asked him out, okay? He doesn't know how to do this. "I'm Kit, Phana's friend," he says, trying to make it less weird.
"I'm Ming. And of course, P'Kit!" Ming flashes him an easy grin and holds out his hand.
Oh right, the phone. Kit shoves it at Ming, nearly hitting him in the chest. Great, he's acing this.
Ming smiles at him, bemused or confused, probably both, and brushes his hand, totally unnecessarily, over the back of Kit's hand as he takes the phone. "In case of emergency, right?" Ming looks up at him from under his lashes and boy, this nong is brazen.
12. ** In Control series by LokelaniRose - Ming/Kit - ~27,000 words, explicit - Kit struggles to tell Ming that he wants something other than the careful, gentle sex they’ve been having. Ming discovers that Kit has some anxiety and panic problems. He also discovers what helps him feel better. [spoilers: these two things are connected.] I love how attentive and caring Ming is throughout this series. The anxious Kit also rings true to the character we saw on the show.
But now that Kit is fretting over things, he might as well fret over this as well. So Ming is great in bed. And let’s be honest, Kit probably isn’t. He hasn’t had a hundred previous partners – okay, tiny exaggeration, but still – and doesn’t know all the fancy moves and techniques and tricks…and just like everything else, in bed Ming is somehow casual and sincere at the same time. He never seems to want anything except what Kit wants, is always happy to do whatever, to take his time making slow, gentle love to Kit. Kit knows that he always comes at least – he secretly really likes it when Ming comes, he’s not quite sure why – but what if there’s more that Kit could be doing, to make it better for him? If Kit was better in bed maybe it would make up for being a shitty boyfriend in other areas, one who can’t be nice in public or talk about his feelings.
UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
13. another nightmare fic by itsmylifekay - Win/Team - ~2300 words, not rated - Team tries to sleep without Win and it doesn’t go well.
Team’s room feels suffocating, the air too thick and the space too dark and the covers sticking to his skin with sweat. His breaths are too loud in the quiet, but the quiet itself is deafening. It reminds him of the water. The muted sounds. The frantic pounding of his heart. (The same one he feels now echoed in his chest.)
Flashes of the dream come back to him unbidden.
Everything is too dark, too bright, no way to see what way is up or what way is down. He’s trapped. Can’t get out. Can’t breathe.
14. ** Different With You by blackrose9212 - Win/Team - ~6900 words, teen - It’s open swim week, which means that the swimming club offers free lessons to any of the students who would like to participate. Team doesn’t understand why his teammates hate it so much - until he does. Great jealousy in this one from both sides.
“Nice to meet you,” the boy gushes. “I hope you don’t mind, but I’d like to join your group. Auntie said there needs to be at least three people, and no one was sitting across from you two. I’ve been paying attention so I already have ideas. Is that okay?” Team watches as he pulls out his books and drops them onto the table, pushing them a little farther out so they’re nearly touching Win’s notebook.
Team shrugs. “Sure, that’s fine. I don’t think Win has been paying attention so I’m glad you have an idea of what’s going on.”
Win hits him lightly at the back of the hand and Film giggles behind his hand. “Oh, no, P’Win looks very smart. I’m sure he’s been listening.” He looks at Win and smiles a little, blushing when Win gives him a smile back.
Team looks between the two of them. Then back at Film, who’s watching Win leaf through his literature textbook like he’s never seen anything so beautiful, and then past Film at the table he left from, where he sees three boys, laughing behind their hands and making cooing faces.
15. seven hundred thirteen by Kiranokira - Win/Team - ~6800 words, mature - Win spends two years abroad in England, and he and Team have to navigate a long distance relationship. It’s very sweet and written very true to life.
“I kind of hoped you were going to show up at the airport tomorrow morning and chase the plane,” Win says. He kisses Team’s hair, lingering there to memorize the fresh, clear scent.
Team says, “Is it weird that I thought about doing that?” and Win feels him smile against his shoulder.
It’s late, nearly nine thirty, and Win had plans of how to spend tonight that can’t be realized anymore. He wanted to invite Team to dinner with his family. He wanted to play video games with Team and View. He wanted to talk about London with Waan and Team. He wanted to include Team in his family’s warmth in some small way, to make him feel less lonely.
He can’t do any of that now but he still wants to sneak Team upstairs and have him in his arms all night. He wouldn’t, but he wants to. It’s been a month since he moved off campus permanently, and weeks since he was last able to spend a night alone with Team.
16. ** You Can Cry by Kiranokira - Win/Team - ~19,600 words, mature - Win goes missing while on vacation with some friends. Team is left at home trying to handle it. I like the way the author built up to the accident happening. They did a good job creating tension and showing us exactly how Team felt about Win. And spoilers, this story has a happy ending.
“You’re going to fail out of university,” Team tells him. “You’re not really going, are you?”
Win rolls onto his side and perches his cheek on his hand. “What if I say yes?” he asks. “Will you miss me?”
Team’s warning look is more venomous than usual. “Not at all,” Team says, and Win smirks because that isn’t true and they both know it. “You still shouldn’t go. What if you miss the flight back? You’ll fail out and I’ll break up with you for being a dumbass.”
The very recent phenomenon of Team acknowledging that they’re a couple has its usual melting effect on Win’s heart.
2GETHER
17. ** Love Songs on Our Skin series by Kari_Kurofai - Sarawat/Tine - ~15,700 words, explicit - A soulmark AU where Tine is born with the notes to a song that hasn’t yet been written wrapped around his chest. I enjoyed how Tine’s obliviousness in the show carries over to this fic.
Only Mr. Chic would have a song no one had ever fucking heard of permanently etched on his chest. For fuck's sake .
Still, he waves it off, and he tries not to look too closely at other people's marks. Tries being the key word. He doesn't envy the elegant watercolors of a guitar pick and an open novel he catches sight of on the wrists of some couple's interlinked hands when he's in town. And he certainly doesn't envy the dude he once saw in a coffee shop with the words " I hate you " scrawled across the back of his neck. But yeah, okay, he might be a little jealous of the people who are lucky enough to have something as simple as their soulmate's name on their skin. That definitely isn't fair.
"Why couldn't it at least have been a Scrubb song?" he asks the mirror as he wipes it clear shower-born condensation. The mirror and him are well acquainted with this conversation by now. In fact, the mirror sees the stupid mark more than anyone, so it might as well put up with his equally stupid questions. "It could have been 'Together.' Just think of it, how romantic it would be to meet some cute girl's eyes after bumping into them at a concert, my favorite song playing . . ." He draws a nail over the winding bars of the music on his chest, frowning. "That would be so much easier."
18. Drown Your Sorrows by HyacinthsSoul - 2gether/Theory of Love - Sarawat and Third meet at a bar and bond over being in love with oblivious men.
“No, he’s an angel,” Sarawat says. “Unfortunately he’s a very stupid, very straight angel.”
“Mine’s stupid too,” the other man admits. “But definitely no angel. I’m Third, by the way,” he adds, offering a slender hand to shake.
“Sarawat,” says Sarawat. “Can I buy you another? I think we’re drinking the same thing, although I can’t remember what it’s called.”
20. ** Your Body Is My Instrument by Kari_Kurofai - Sarawat/Tine - ~12,000 words, explicit - This fic does a good job doing what, in this reccer’s humble opinion, the series failed to: showing Tine attracted to Sarawat. There’s great first time sex and some fun sexual tension. Plus, we get to see them switch off, which is extremely rare in BL. And most importantly: hand kink.
It starts innocently enough. Or, well, innocently enough for a guy whose first words to him were, “Keep looking at me like that and I’ll kiss you till you drop.” So, you know. It starts kinda like that.
They’ve been officially dating for a grand sum total of three days and altogether not that much has changed. Except that Sarawat touches him more now. Normally this would be fine, no big deal, right? But Sarawat has magic, evil hands, and apparently all he has to do is glance Tine’s way to deduce the exact right places and ways to touch Tine to drive him up the fucking wall.
And the worst part is it’s almost never the same place or the same way twice, and the only warning Tine ever gets is that sneaky little glint Sarawat gets in his eyes just before he does it, the bastard.
MY ENGINEER
21. Cool Boy(friend) by HyacinthsSoul - Ram/King - ~22,000 words, explicit - So this is technically a WIP, but each chapter feels like a completed fic without a cliffhanger or anything. This is a very sweet, comfortable story about King and Ram getting to know each other as their relationship develops.
In the selfie King sends, he’s holding up a full shot glass while someone’s arm reaches into the frame to hand him another kind of drink, something tall with a straw and a paper umbrella. Ram frowns. Whose arm is that? The person is wearing a red long-sleeved shirt, which doesn’t match what any of their friend group was wearing, and the engineer bar doesn’t offer table service.
Frowning, Ram looks back through the previous photos until he spots a detail he’d overlooked before: a red-shirted man at a neighboring table. He’s visible in the background of two or three pictures taken by Tee, and in each of them he’s staring intently at King.
Not that it’s any of Ram’s business. Not that he cares.
HISTORY3: TRAPPED
22. it’s too late (to turn back now) by stebeee - Tang Yi/Meng Shao Fei - ~7200 words, general audiences - Canon divergence fic where Tang Yi pushes Shao Fei away after he saves Hong Ye in order to try and protect him. Shao Fei reacts to that about as well as you’d expect.
“Tang Yi, what do you mean-“
“I think you’ve fooled around for long enough,” Tang Yi interrupts, his voice cold, nothing like the man who had dabbed at his lips with a cotton bud last night, the man who had smiled at him when he made the cannon joke.
“You’ve disrupted my life, and the life of my family and friends in the past few weeks, Meng Shao Fei. This has gone for long enough,” he continues, unwavering. “I don’t want to have anything more to do with you. Take a good rest here in the hospital, and I’ll get someone to pack up your things back at the house. Jack will deliver it back to your apartment.”
23 + 24. ** just waiting, waiting (on you) and between you and me by stebeee - Tang Yi/Meng Shao Fei - ~16,000 words, general audiences - These are stories about how Shao Fei and the rest of the gang deal over the years when Tang Yi is in jail. Found family fics are my jam, so I loved this.
The thing is, it’s been almost three months of this. 90 days, give or take. 2,160 hours. 129,600 minutes. And more than 7 million seconds of this — not having Tang Yi at his side.
Shao Fei wonders for a moment if he will ever stop seeing Tang Yi in every corner of the house. When he comes down the stairs in the morning, some part of him expects to see Tang Yi standing at the kitchen island with a bright smile, asking him if he wants jam with his toast that morning. Shao Fei sees Tang Yi in that apron he loves, cooking at the stove when he fixes himself dinner, alone in the spacious kitchen. Seeing Tang Yi’s favourite blue bathrobe, Shao Fei can almost see Tang Yi leaving the bathroom, his hair all wet and falling over his eyes.
25. amuse bouche by sarahyyy - Jack/Zhao Zi - ~2400 words, general audiences - This is more of Jack seducing Zhao Zi through food and attention. So basically an extension of the show. Mother hen Jack is the cutest.
“Jack?” Zhao Zi murmurs blearily. “Why are you here?”
“Why didn’t you tell me you were sick?” Jack shoots back, herding Zhao Zi back into the house. He checks for Zhao Zi’s temperature with the back of his hand. “Fever?”
“Just the flu for now, I think?” Zhao Zi says.
Jack purses his lips. “Have you had anything to eat?”
“I had some bread earlier?” Zhao Zi says, but he also looks shifty enough that Jack mostly takes it with a grain of salt.
26. Absolutely Nothing Goes Wrong by anon - Jack/Zhao Zi - ~4500 words, teen - This is an AU where Zhao Zi is the son of a rival mob boss, but he’s still, you know HIMSELF. And when his father says he’s useless, he decides to prove him wrong by seducing Tang Yi’s second-in-command. It’s absolutely adorable.
The man pulled him by the arm, resisting Zhao Zi’s attempts to unhook his claws without causing a scene.
“Hey, stop grabbing me!” he shouted, as the other man played deaf.
“While I admit this is a very loud bar, I didn’t think it was quite so easy to mishear what this young man just yelled straight into your ear,” a newcomer who’d witnessed their conflict said lightly as he walked up to them. His words were accompanied by a wide, almost chilling smile. Zhao Zi blinked once and the odd peculiarity of that smile vanished, leaving just a regular smile in its place. He must’ve just been imagining things under the harsh shadows of the dimly lit bar.
AND +2
Because I’m shameless, I’ll add my own two fics to the end, if you’re interested.
WHY R U?
27. Sorry A Thousand Times - Fighter/Tutor - ~3200 words, explicit - This is a canon divergence for the series finale. I needed more catharsis after the intensity of episode 12.
Tutor narrowed his eyes and clenched his fists at his sides. He took a deep breath. “How many times do I have to tell you to leave me alone before you listen?” he asked. I don’t know how many more times I can bring myself to say it.
“Only once,” Fight said and then added, “if you mean it.”
Tutor crossed his arms over his chest and said, “What makes you think I don’t mean it now?”
The corner of Fight’s mouth turned up and he took a step closer. Tutor stumbled back until he was stopped by his legs hitting the edge of the bed. Fight reached out a hand and gently ran the back of his fingers over the line of Tutor’s jaw.
Until We Meet Again
28. Dream On - Win/Team - 8900 words, explicit - Takes place alongside show canon, so that we see how the bed sharing began and how Win and Team’s relationship developed over that year.
“Do you want to do well tomorrow?” Win asked, throwing one of his legs over both of Team’s.
“Yes,” Team said as he did his best to put some space between them on the tiny mattress.
“Then you need to get some sleep. I’m helping.”
“How is this helping?” Team demanded.
“Would you stop…” Win said, shifting closer every time Team pulled away. “Five minutes, Team. Just be still for five minutes, okay?”

“Didn’t you see what I did?!” wwx and lwj, clearly i love Pain - @gremlinmetawin
hello, wangxian is so hard to write and i think i complained about that a lot today 😭  i once again have decided to make this a slight continuation of the last prompt i wrote (again will link the first AND second bits for anyone who hasn’t read it, below!) i’m not entirely happy with this, bc i’ve never written anything that isn’t... well jiang cheng centric, so i didn’t know how to navigate it??? but i hope you like it all the same??? thank u for getting my creative juices flowing, ur always so giving 💜 @gremlinmetawin
It had been a long day for Lan Wangji, and it was only the early afternoon. He wanted nothing more than to drag Wei Ying back to the Jingshi and spend the remainder of their day alone. However, unfortunately that wasn’t a possibility with his brother not leaving his rooms for the day, leaving Lan Wangji to deal with some duties that required immediate attention. Thankfully, Wei Ying had decided to accompany him for the day, making his duties seem less like work and more like running errands with the love of his life.
As they were passing by the Hanshi, Lan Wangji averted his eyes from the dwelling, not wanting to be tempted to go see his brother, having learned from his past mistakes. He wished that there was something he could do for Xichen, that would stop him from getting into these moods, knowing that they were just as draining on him, as they were on those he spoke to.
He was suddenly pulled out of his thoughts, when he felt his husband urgently pulling at his robes.
“Did Xichen-ge play the flute this morning?” Wei Wuxian sounded frantic, his eyes wide, something hidden behind them. Perhaps fear? Wangji was unsure, but he was just as reluctant to let his husband go anywhere near his brother today. Wei Ying had refused to tell him what Xichen had said to him that time, but he knew that the other had had nightmares about it for a long time after, and likely still wasn’t completely over it, even if the two had made their amends.
“He did not. If you wish to see him, you should go tomorrow, instead.” He hoped that whatever Wei Ying wanted from Xichen could wait, otherwise he was not above physically dragging the other away from here. He refused to let Wei Ying see Xichen right now and would do everything in his power to stop it.
However, it would seem that that wasn’t the case, as the Wei Ying seemed to grow irritated at Wangji, “ugh, no, didn’t you see what I did?!” Wei Ying’s attention was no longer solely focussed on Lan Wangji, as he seemed to be searching for something or someone, “someone let Jiang Cheng go see him, fuck.”
Oh. Lan Wangji actually hadn’t seen Jiang Wanyin, as he had purposefully not been looking towards the Hanshi and had thus, apparently, missed seeing Jiang Wanyin.
If it had been anyone else, Lan Wangji would have pitied the person who unknowingly stumbled upon Lan Xichen whilst he was in one of his moods. However, this was Jiang Wanyin, who had more or less spent the past two decades having built up his reputation by being just as hostile, and so he voiced this to his husband. “I’m sure xiongzhang would have said nothing that Jiang Wanyin hasn’t heard about himself before. Would he not be fine?”
This proved to be a mistake on his part, having somehow forgotten how fiercely protective Wei Ying was over Jiang Wanyin. Wei Ying rounded on his husband, his eyes narrowing in a glare that hadn’t been directed at him in a very long time. “Lan Zhan, we are going to have a serious talk about this later. But for now, I have to go find my idiot brother who’s probably about to shut himself away from everyone he cares about, again.” And with that, he had quickly left, supposedly to find Jiang Wanyin and give him comfort from whatever Lan Xichen had said to him.
Lan Wangji went about the remainder of his day in a trance like state, not being used to Wei Ying being mad at him, without them immediately resolving the                                                                     argument. Of course, they had gotten into fights, what couple did not? But they had generally been about Wei Ying’s lack of care towards himself, rather than something Lan Wangji had done. He wasn’t used to this and he could honestly say that he did not like it. All he could do now was wait for Wei Ying to return and hope that Wei Ying would no longer be mad at him.
It was well after dinner when Wei Ying had finally arrived back, shutting the doors softly behind him. Lan Wangji had winded down from the day, what with 9pm drawing near, though he was growing more impatient for Wei Ying’s return. As time had passed in the day, he had been tempted to go in search of Wei Ying wanting to smooth things over. However, he knew that his husband wouldn’t appreciate him interrupting his time with Jiang Wanyin.
Neither of them said a word to each other, for a few moments, letting an uncomfortable silence fall upon them. Wei Ying moved to grab a bottle of Emperor’s Smile from their ‘secret’ stash and sat down, gesturing for his husband to sit with him.
Letting out a sigh, Wei Ying took a drink directly from the jar before speaking, “do you want to hear what your brother said to Jiang Cheng?”
Lan Wangji could only assume the venom that his brother had spat out, but nodded all the same, “Mn.”
“He told my brother that he killed innocent people for no reason, that he and the cultivation world would have benefitted from him shutting himself away from society.” Taking another swig, Wei Wuxian laughed ruefully, not at all enjoying the situation they were in. A better part of his day was spent comforting his brother and ensuring that he was okay before letting him go back to Lotus Pier, and now he had to work through how his soulmate still hates one of the only family members he has left. “He strung my brother along, let him think that he cared, and then used that against him.”
“Xiongzhang doesn’t mean anything he says on these days…” And that was something that Lan Wangji wholeheartedly believed, he refused to believe that Lan Xichen had meant any of the words that he uttered in these instances.
He tiredly rubbed his hands over his face, trying to consider how to construct his thoughts from here on out, knowing that Lan Wangji would defend his brother to no ends, apparently not realising that Wuxian would do the same. “But Jiang Cheng doesn’t know that, Lan Zhan. How could he have known that when no one told him?”
Wei Ying had a point and Wangji knew it, but he still didn’t understand why Wei Ying was so upset over it, these were words Jiang Wanyin had heard before, “perhaps he should have been told, however it’s not the first time he’s had these wor-“
Wei Ying cut him off, fury in his eyes, “he’s had these words spat at him before, is that what you want to say?”
Lan Wangji silently nodded in response to the other, shocked at the anger he could feel radiating from his husband.
“Who fucking cares, Lan Zhan? I’ve had poison spat at me as well, yet you are there to defend me at every step, regardless of how many times I’ve heard it. Why is it any different when its Jiang Cheng?” And wasn’t that the truth. Any time someone so much as breathes wrong in Wuxian’s direction, Lan Zhan is there in an instant, ready to cut the person’s throat, just to defend his honour.
“You… didn’t do the things you’re accused of.” Lan Wangji was beginning to see the fault in his thoughts, that perhaps he wasn’t being as unbiased as he had originally assumed.
“But I did, Lan Zhan. I did cultivate demonic cultivation. I did leave the cultivation society for the Wen remnants. I killed so many people, I did all of the things they accused me off. I couldn’t control it! Yet you choose to protect me but also to demonise my brother.” Wei Wuxian stopped speaking to take another long drink from the Emperor’s Smile jar. “Lan Zhan, I love you, I love you so much, but I need you to stop hating him so openly.”
“He hates me too.” Perhaps it was a petty response, but Wangji didn’t enjoy being on the other end of being scolded by his cultivation partner.
“Jiang Cheng only gives out what he receives. If you show him kindness and respect, then he will show that back to you in return.” It was always something Wei Wuxian had always noticed about Jiang Cheng, if someone was kind to him, then he would be kind in return, albeit in his own, angry way, but kind all the same. And if you show him nothing but resentment, then he finds no reason to be kind in return. “I’m not asking you and him to get along and become friends, I know how unlikely that is. I’m just asking for you to give him the benefit of the doubt. For you and him to be in a room together without me worrying that the two of you will kill each other. Please.”
Wei Ying was looking at Lan Wangji with desperation in his eyes, and an overall tired look on his face. He hadn’t realised how much this had been weighing on his husband’s mind, and so he had no choice but to agree, “…mn, I promise to try harder to be kind to Jiang Wanyin, in the future.”
“Thank you. I’m sorry I spoke like that to you, but I needed you to understand.”
“Mn. It’s okay.” But there was still one thing lingering on his mind, that Wei Ying hadn’t answered for him yet. “I am... still unsure on something... You do not get upset when people talk about you, why does Jiang Wanyin?”
“Imagine if I had condemned your every move, Lan Zhan. Every life choice you made the past two decades. Not a random disciple from a random sect, but me, your husband.” He looked away from the other, knowing that Lan Wangji would draw his own conclusions about their brothers relationship, or lack thereof, on his own from his words. “Imagine someone you love saying something so horrible about you to your face, saying that they no longer want to be in your company because it’s tiresome to them, and you have no idea why they’d said it. That’s why he got upset, not because of what was said, but because of who said it.”
Lan Wangji began nodding, his mind reeling at the fact that Wei Ying had implied that Jiang Wanyin had feelings for his brother, but he understood what the other was saying. Jiang Wanyin had no idea that Lan Xichen got into these moods, and so he had believed that the other had meant the words that he had said to him. “I apologise for thinking and speaking so carelessly. I’ll try to be more lenient towards Jiang Wanyin in the future.”
Wei Ying gave his cultivation partner the biggest grin that he could muster, “that’s all I could ask from you, Lan Zhan. I’m sorry that I had to leave you alone all day, you must have been so worried.” He stood up, bringing his jar of Emperor’s Smile with him and immediately sat himself down on Lan Wangji’s lap, wrapping his arms around the other’s neck.
“Mn, it is okay. Jiang Wanyin needed you, and you are now here with me.” Lan Wangji smiled at Wei Ying, and gently wrapped his arms around his waist, holding him in place as he pressed a firm kiss to the other’s lips.

So, my heart keeps circling and circling back to The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System, and I was idly prodding at why that is, even more than the other mxtx stories, and then I thought to myself, ‘why not ramble into the internet abyss instead of just in your own head?’ And so here we are.
I love this story so much, seriously. It was maybe the most difficult of the three novels for me to begin, because the translation editing is definitely rougher than mdzs and tgcf, and I think the story itself assumes that readers are kind of familiar with transmigration concepts (teal deer, person from real world reads novel, involuntarily is pulled into novel, often(?) as one of the established characters, lives out the-novel-plot-but-different).
But once I got past like, that first chapter? MAN. I was so hooked.
I think the first thing that really stands out to me is that Binghe as a love interest is...I’m not sure I want to say he’s more “flawed” than the other mxtx love interests, but that’s the best word I’m finding right now. The wangxian ship is mostly in tune with each other in the present, despite a few lingering misunderstandings. And the hualian ship, like, hua cheng rolls up like ‘heyy what up i would do anything you asked of me’ and xie lian was like ‘you. i like you a lottle.’ and their in-book development is mostly about bringing xie lian up to speed on the depth of their history together.
But Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe! The original canon Binghe is specifically a blackened hero, who is casually cruel and manipulative, and has collected up a massive harem of pretty ladies to be his wives and concubines. Pretty much the last straw in that blackening is that his abusive teacher (who he still desperately wanted the approval of) found out he was half demon (also news to luo binghe) and kicked him into the abyss where he had a miserable few years having his demon blood awakened. Later, he came back to the human realm, much stronger and angrier than when he left, and his morally questionable adventures involved de-limbing his old teacher, cutting out his tongue, and keeping him alive for years.
Shen Yuan is a modern-day human bean who has been hate-reading the webnovel of this story, where he can see a lot of interesting potential in the story, but is massively frustrated by the things the author has chosen to do with it. It is a Significant shock to his system when he wakes up inside the story, in the body of Shen Qingqiu. After Luo Binghe has already been his student for some time. Also, there’s a System that’s policing whether or not he acts in-character as Shen Qingqiu, and he’s going to get punished if his points drop below a certain threshold. He gets more freedom to act as the story progresses, but at first he has to do things like argue with the System about why he should be allowed to give medicine to Luo Binghe after he gets beat up (it will shame their sect if outsiders see him with a bruised face). And on the one hand, he’s trying DESPERATELY to avoid a future where he gets mutilated and tortured by his student, but... he is absolutely a massive softy who takes no time at all to start ADORING this kid and being super proud of everything he does. He won’t admit that, even in his own pov, and he has a very, very reserved external manner, but he’s so soft on the inside.
(ps why did using fans as conversational props stop being a thing. maybe sometimes i don’t WANT my face hanging out in public, maybe sometimes it’s extra fun to hide your expression.)
And this makes for a fascinating dynamic, because this new Shen Qingqiu 1) adores Luo Binghe, 2) is terrified of Luo Binghe.
At first, when Luo Binghe is still a teenager, it’s easier to land on the side of just adoring him. The original canon character was a sweet, sweet kid all on his own. And Luo Binghe is still an extremely good boy when this novel starts, even though he’s being mistreated by his teacher and most of his fellow disciples. But when Shen Qingqiu starts giving him support and positive reinforcement, oh my god, he BLOOMS.
But Shen Qingqiu is from outside the novel, and he knows where this is headed eventually. And at the point where the original character shoved Luo Binghe into the abyss for a couple years of misery, the new Shen Qingqiu thinks he’s in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation, and... reluctantly does the same thing.
So here’s the trouble. Luo Binghe is... needy. He’s a needy, needy boy. He loves very hard and cares about his people (person) a lot, but he is also clingy as heck, jealous, and has MASSIVE abandonment issues. Getting this treatment from his favorite person in the entire universe is... not ideal. Having it happen when he’s just found out he’s half demon is even less ideal, especially when the framing makes it look like he’s being rejected because of What He Is, not something he has any power to change. And it ties back into to his oldest, most painful insecurities. His name literally means ‘lowered into the icy river’, because that’s what his birth mother did with him.
So when he comes back to the human realm, he’s not as blackened as he was in canon, and doesn’t have a grudge of the same magnitude as the original Luo Binghe. But the person he loves most in the world hurt him very, very badly, and he :) has :) some :) questions :))))))))))))))
And this is the point where every time Luo Binghe breathes, Shen Qingqiu goes WAUGHHHH
Which is so TASTY, honestly! And the escalation of hurt and mistrust is such a delicious feedback loop! I love a good supportive relationship, but I live for two people who care about each other inadvertently inflicting massive wounds on each other’s hearts.
I don’t want to go into describing the later parts of the plot, because that seems like such a waste, but I feel like transmigration stories are the MOST tasty if having prior knowledge of a novel’s plot makes the leads act as dumbasses in all kinds of new and exciting ways. Which definitely, definitely applies here.
And there are all kinds of DELICIOUS side relationships, which weren’t there in the original canon, and that Shen Qingqiu accidentally discovers/uncovers while he’s fumbling around trying to dodge his canon fate. Like, early in the book, Shen Qingqiu is supposed to kill one of his peers in the sect. The guy was suffering from a qi deviation and the original Shen Qingqiu was like ‘look, he was out of control, and I didn’t want to kill him, but it was him or me.’ Everyone was skeptical, but they didn’t have any evidence to contradict him. This character was the brother of one of Luo Binghe’s eventual wives, so it was pretty much just another bonus reason to hate his shizun once he turned against him.
The new Shen Qingqiu is like ‘okay, so this Liu Qingge is supposed to be strong. Maybe if I save his life he’ll protect me from Luo Binghe?’ And it changes SO MUCH! And Shen Qingqiu is SO DUMB! He’s like ‘wow, liu qingge really hates me, huh.’ And Liu Qingge is like ‘WHY ARE YOU BEING NICE. IT’S WEIRD. ARE YOU REALLY STILL YOURSELF?’ And then later there are spoilery developments, but there’s this act of devotion that moves me so much. (five years!!!!!!!!!!)
And I don’t want to undersell the intense emotions these characters are so frequently feeling in this story, but they are also. so dumb. so frequently, frequently dumb. and I live for it.
Like, I just got past the part in the novel where Shen Qingqiu sees Luo Binghe and Liu Mingyan having their first conversation. Liu Mingyan is a legendary beauty (so beautiful she wears a veil, because otherwise her beauty is just too distracting) and eventually becomes one of Luo Binghe’s favorite wives. So Shen Qingqiu (who hates the original novel, but also sure has a lot of passion for it and remembers a lot of the details, considering how much he theoretically hates it) is like ‘OH, HOT DAMN. MY OTP’S FIRST CONVERSATION. I WANNA SEE HOW THIS GOES.’
And what happens is that Luo Binghe gets so massively jealous. We get a bit of his pov, where almost all of his thoughts are ‘WHY IS SHIZUN STILL LOOKING AT HER?? IT’S NOT LIKE YOU CAN SEE MUCH PAST THE VEIL ANYWAYS. AND ANYWAYS, I’M PRETTIER???????????????’ And finally Luo Binghe goes off out of sight with her so shizun can’t watch her anymore, and Shen Qingqiu is like ‘ah.... alas....... of course the protagonist and his lady get privacy for such an important scene..............’
They are so dumb, guys. They care so much, and they ache so much over each other, and they are so dumb. And the supporting cast isn’t much smarter. Even the smart ones have the dumb ones inflicted on them.
In the extras, at one point demon king Luo Binghe is addressing his main retainers, and he’s like ‘if... hypothetically..... two people’s hearts were out of alignment with each other........ how would u fix that.......... hypothetically..............’ And his poor retainers are like
Tumblr media
But I really, really think that the protagonist being afraid of the love interest is a really key point for me, personally. And then it’s extra my favorite, because of 1) him having a good fucking reason to be afraid, and 2) his love interest having no goddamn clue. It makes for such a good blend of humor and sincere pathos. I’m weak to dumbasses-in-love as a dynamic, but it can be hard to have something so lighthearted while also working in painful emotional depths. The premise for this story is hard to replicate, and I’m kind of drawing a blank on anything that I’ve read that measures up to it, and the plot REALLY makes the use of some incredible foundations.
Anyways, thank you for coming to my ted talk, this book is ridiculous and i love it, and it’s also the shortest and most linear of mxtx’s books, and i highly recommend it to everyone.

I know this is technically a twitter thing, but idk how to cultivate my twitter experience, so I’m doing it here haha, gonna catch up on the first ten days for funsies bc i don’t have any inspiration to write at the moment.
~~~
Day 1: First impression on XiYao. TBH I didn’t SHIP this at first? I was very heavily focused on wangxian with less attention on other characters. At first, I leaned a little more heavily towards nielan (because it seemed a little less manipulative hahaha), and got VERY caught up in xiyao a few weeks later haha.
Day 2: What made you ship XiYao? “YOU TWO GOT TWO ROOMS?” < that line in the novel is what really SPARKED it for me actually. Like, it’s such a small line with DEEP implications. The only way jgy would know this is if lxc told him! Jgy asks this question SUDDENLY, he’s clearly invested in the situation or why would he ask this in the MIDDLE of his villain antics? The only conclusion to draw is that this isn’t something he was JUST told about, that lxc has probably been talking to jgy about his little brother’s crush on wwx for AGES now!!!! And that’s so intimate!!!! Like clearly lxc felt like he could really talk to jgy about anything, and jgy was clearly interested in things lxc cared about!! And that’s what really started me down the xiyao path xD
Day 3: Favorite XiYao scene. I mean, do I need to say that HAND scene in cql? That’s too obvious. Instead, I’ll go with a novel scene: I love the bits we get of lxc and jgy in the nmj empathy flashbacks. Jgy hiding behind lxc and lxc protecting him????? ADORABLE.
Day 4: Favorite XiYao Headcanon. FAVORITE???? Favorte g-rated headcanon: Lan Xichen was a very doting uncle to Jin Rusong, he loved him so very much ;n; Favorite x-rated headcanon: Lan Xichen massively enjoys taking a submissive role in bed. It’s not ALL the time, and he does take initiative at times, but like???? This is a man who hangs back from being decisive or taking a stand for fear of disturbing the peace, and regrets many of his own choices because of this! The idea of passing over control to someone he trusts implicitly to make decisions for his benefit would be a MASSIVE relief and comfort for him!!!!
Day 5: In what material do you prefer XiYao most?  Oof, for as much as i LOVE the xiyao in The Untamed (bless zzj and lhk, they did that for US), I have to go novel. The details we get on Jgy’s tragic background and the fact that he never actually targeted wwx is a great set up for him that I think makes him a more sympathetic character.
Day 6: Thoughts on XiYao's ending TRAGIC. SO VERY SAD. Based on an accumulation of both novel and drama, we have a STABBING, we have jgy’s “I NEVER THOUGHT OF HURTING YOU,” we have jgy slowly leading lxc towards their joined death and lxc’s ACCEPTANCE of that, before jgy SUDDENLY PUSHES LXC TO SAFETY. my heart can’t take it it’s so sad.
Day 7: Recommend a song/playlist for XiYao Josef Salvat - Til I Found You featuring a line that goes “In a jungle like this, you can’t ever know if you’re lion or lamb or both--you are whatever gets you through” and this bridge/chorus:  I've spent my life wandering through the wilderness Playing whatever role I had to play Crumbling under the weights of expectation Doomed to watch my youth slip on its way...
Day 8: Recommend your favorite XiYao fanart. It’s hard to pick a SINGLE fave but god, if I must it’s this gorgeous piece (who also did the most soul-healing 3zun piece). Honorable mentions: xiyao smooching, this tender look, and bunnies.
Day 10: Who do you like more? Jgy or Lxc? WHY WOULD U MAKE ME PICK ;o; I love them both so much it’s hard to choose one over the otherrrrrrrrr, but ultimately I might have to choose lan xichen because he is my sweet, kind-hearted son who deserved love and happiness and he had to outlive both his sworn brothers and it hurts my heart
🐰 🐇 👋 fr Classy Cultiva! Reply: Happy hols 2 u 2! May not log on til next wk 🎄| THERE WAS ONLY ONE CAVE 😄 I’m @ ep37 of a reaction rewatch & cave ~ 100 lifetimes ago | omg I can’t deal w/Lotus Pier's destruction. Just can’t. It’s so much. But yes AMAZING acting by all, ahhhh omg ofc 3ary otp is: everyone and therapy O_o Yesss the more I think on it, everything goes back to wwx sacrificing himself & almost everything goes back 2 golden core xfer and keeping it secret from EVERYONE 1/2
bc he never wants jc 2 know *sobs* & ofc jc sacrifices himself 1st *screams* thumbs wiping teary cheeks *dies* | there’s a post going around how wwx thought jc valued cultivation above all but really jc just thinks cultvn is the only way anyone will value [love] him and GOD GET THERAPY *hyperventilates* Q12: content ur proudest of making? Or you wish existed? I made 1 photoset, but many more ideas. Soooo many ideas & fics wip [like 10 or more], still trying to manifest a Whatta Man vid 😂 2/2
hello Classy Cultiva ^^ I hope you enjoyed your christmas time! I got some nice presents and now am just doing some normal uni work again :’D tho studying feels like a pain sigh
oh yes that’s a slippery slope, the golden core transfer... I always remember when I first watched all of that, the destruction of Lotus Pier (which I knew was coming bc I had seen the donghua’s first season) and the jc just going nuts and wwx going to rescue him and them just escaping with the wen siblings. and then wwx desperately trying to find a way to cure his brother and I knew something bad was going on when wen qing just started arguing with wwx about the way he found. and then there was the part where jc climbed onto that hill and I could smell something fishy about it. but then they just moved on and lowkey forgot about all of that in favor of bringing wwx back as the yiling patriarch? but I remember yelling before the reveal happened bc I was just so ready for it :’D it was kinda funny how they just made it super obvious but decided to keep it (tho I was super shocked about the reveal that jc sacrificed himself first bc at this point I was still very conflicted about him as a character...) but yes pls, therapy for everyone ;; especially bc wangxian are really the only ppl who at the end seem content and happy with how the things turn out? or at least a lot happier than many others sigh
hmm, content am proud of? I’ve made this one post about my own fave works this year and two other similar ones (I think?) before that too. it’s been nice to look at my own old stuff and see how much I’ve made progress but also how much I’ve actually made in general :’D I am very proud of all of my edits tbh bc it’s something I got into this year and have loved learning. I’ve also been super proud of my xicheng fic bc it’s HUGE and I can’t fathom that I’ve actually written over 100k for them... and one more thing am proud of are the drawings I’ve made this year! I have ended up making portraits of lwj, wwx and jc during this year and I wish I manage to draw lxc as an addition soon :’D they’ve turned out great and I hope I can post them here at some point ^^  I would also love to try video editing but am a bit scared of that :’D the next thing I might try is giffing? tho that terrifies me too lol but it would just be the next level of picture editing right? right????? (help me lord)
I wish you good luck with all of your works ^^ I know wips are a pain but you can do it! as long as you have fun with them ^^ and enjoy the rest of your holidays and the upcoming new years!
see you again ♥
(Planning the Day) To Meet You
Wangxian, Modern AU, Slow Burn, E-Rated
[READ ON AO3]
Chapter 6
Thursday, Twelfth Day with Wei Ying
Lan Wangji spends a long while (about seven minutes) in front of his wardrobe this morning, wondering which of his clothes would be appropriate playground wear. White trousers are out. Lan Wangji is also not a shorts person, though he can see the advantages of wearing as little fabric as possible that could get covered in sand. He finally settles on light grey trousers he can roll up a little, and a short-sleeved dress shirt that is definitely not playground appropriate. But the fabric is light and incredibly soft, and if he wears it just in case Wei Wuxian might tug on his sleeve again, that is no one’s business but his own.
He debates whether he should go to the library first, but decides it’d be more efficient to work from home this morning. That way he doesn’t have to carry his laptop to the playground later. Those matters decided, he takes a shower and then goes to the kitchen to have breakfast and prepare lunch.
Even though he did some… processing yesterday, he still can’t fully wrap his mind around the fact that his attraction is not one-sided. He’s sure that Wei Ying’s feelings don’t run as deep as his own, but… he’s been flirting. Wei Ying thinks that Lan Wangji is beautiful. And Lan Wangji thinks… that Wei Ying wouldn’t mind kissing him. It was right here in his kitchen, when he thought that they might. The reminder sends heat cursing through his body and he starts chopping the carrots with extra strength and determination.
Lan Wangji wanted to, still wants to. At the same time, he’s glad it didn’t happen. Because his feelings do run deep and the thought of kissing Wei Ying when he can’t have all of him, can’t give him all of himself… He’ll just have to wait for Wei Wuxian to catch up with him. Bribing him with clementines and delicious coffee is probably a good start. Lan Wangji checks his phone. The syrups are supposed to be delivered tonight. Good.
When he arrives at the playground, Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan are already there, once more playing on the slide. He’s barely made two steps in their direction, when Wei Ying lifts his head and spots him, a radiant smile immediately blossoming on his face. Lan Wangji instantly questions his resolve to save kissing for a later time. Right now, he could just… take Wei Ying’s face in his hands and kiss him senseless. Literally sweep him off his feet, like he said he’s waiting for. He’s not entirely certain what kind of logistics a maneuver like that would entail, but he’s sure he could improvise something. He may not have the experience, but his imagination is not restricted by that at all. But no… Wei Ying is right. No need to rush.
“Tall-gege!” A-Yuan has spotted him as well, takes the slide, runs over to Lan Wangji at full speed, until he collides with his leg, wrapping his short arms around it. Definitely a good thing he didn’t wear white trousers again.
Lan Wangji stares down at A-Yuan’s head and then at Wei Wuxian, who is laughing so hard, he almost topples over.
“Hello, A-Yuan,” Lan Wangji awkwardly pats his head in greeting.
A-Yuan, apparently content with how this went about, lets him go and immediately runs back to the slide, as fast as his legs can carry him. Before Lan Wangji can follow him, Wei Ying approaches, traces of laughter still on his face.
“Lan Zhan, you really came.”
“Of course.” How could he not?
And then… Wei Ying slowly drags his gaze over Lan Wangji’s face and his lips unfurl into a wicked smile. He steps even closer, until they’re almost touching and Wei Ying has to tip his head back a little to keep up eye contact.
“Mhm, I’ve been looking forward to seeing you. All night.” And then he winks.
Oh no.
“That was me flirting with you, Lan Zhan. Did you notice?”
“Yes.” He noticed it with his entire body.
“Ah, great. Now that you know, please honour my efforts!” Wei Ying looks incredibly pleased, dimples deepening and eyes glinting.
“How...,” his voice comes out rough and he clears his throat, before he tries again, “How would you like me to honour you?” He’s certain he can come up with a multitude of ideas, but he’d like to hear Wei Ying’s preferences first.
Wei Ying simply stares and stares, maybe thinking about his answer, and Lan Wangji waits patiently for him to respond. As he waits, he sees a flush begin to spread over Wei Ying’s cheekbones. Is this what Wei Ying looked like after Lan Wangji sent him the picture with him and the bunnies? Was he this speechless?
“Lan Zhan… are you flirting back?”
“... am I?”
Wei Ying hides his face behind his hand, shoulders shaking with laughter.
“Aah, what should I do with you… stealing all my thunder and you don’t even know it! You unleash this deadly weapon unknowingly… Lan Zhan, my poor heart!”
Lan Wangji can’t help but feel a little - more than a little - smug, seeing how flustered Wei Ying seems to be. He’s not sure he can replicate this ‘flirting’, but if simply telling Wei Ying his honest thoughts brings a flush to his face, he will happily continue doing that. He still hasn’t gotten an answer though.
“Wei Ying… please let me know your prefered way for me to honour your efforts.”
“Oh my god, Lan Zhan, stop it! I’m already defeated!” Wei Ying simply laughs him off and then grabs his arm and drags him over to their bench.
The morning passes quickly and happily, and the closer lunch approaches, the more Lan Wangji’s anticipation grows. They haven’t discussed yet whether A-Yuan will take his nap at Lan Wangji’s apartment again. He’d gotten out the guest bedding this morning, just in case.
They do go to his apartment after lunch again. A-Yuan is only sleepy, not asleep yet, but he still allows Lan Wangji to carry him. Once he’s dusted off and nestled into bed, Lan Wangji makes coffee and tea for Wei Ying and him and they sit down on the couch.
This time, Lan Wangji does not feel uncomfortable at all. Wei Wuxian happily chatters a long, as usual, and occasionally puts his hand on Lan Wangji’s knee or his arm. It’s all very casual, but this time, he likes the thought that this is just an ordinary day for them, that it could be like this every day. He feels… deeply content.
(Well, there is one uncomfortable bit, because Wei Wuxian spots his guqin and Lan Wangji suddenly remembers that he’s left the sheet notes on the table he’s been working on yesterday and the title of the song may or may not be ‘incriminating’ and so he may or may not end up giving Wei Wuxian the impression that he’s uncomfortable talking about his music. But that’s something he can rectify in the future, when he isn’t running the danger of getting found out for writing sappy love songs. He does find out that Wei Ying also plays an instrument - the flute - and Lan Wangji already has ideas for duets they could play.)
After A-Yuan wakes up, he brings them to the bus stop and picks up some groceries on the way back. He’s making lunch for three people now, after all.
In the evening, he receives another message from Wei Ying.
Wei Ying Lan Zhan, I really want to see and hear you play. Will you play for me one day? Pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase???????
Lan Wangji Maybe.
Wei Ying Aah, don’t tease me!!! I’ll play for you, too!
Lan Wangji I’d like that.
Wei Ying Or I could draw something for you! How about I draw your bunnies????
Lan Wangji I’d like that.
Wei Ying Anything else I could bribe you with?
Lan Wangji immediately knows what he wants to ask for. His neck flushes at the thought. He almost doesn’t, but somehow, cocooned in the darkness and his blanket and in the distant intimacy of their text messages, he finds the courage.
Lan Wangji A picture.
Wei Ying What kind of picture?
Lan Wangji Of Wei Ying.
Wei Ying Hahaha, Lan Zhan, flirting again? ;) Alright! Sugar or spice?
Lan Wangji Either. Both.
Wei Ying Ooooooooooooooooh Gimme a sec Enjoy~
The photo that Lan Wangji receives shows Wei Ying sitting on his bed (presumably). He’s smiling sweetly into the camera, but he’s wearing another one of those very well-worn, very soft sweaters. This time, his entire left shoulder is exposed, as well as that collarbone. He wonders whether Wei Ying tugged his sweater down himself or whether he simply always looks like that. It’s getting very hot under his blanket.
Wei Ying Lan Zhan? Lan Zhan, did you get this? Spicy enough? Should I add more chili? ;) ;) ;)
Lan Wangji Beautiful. Wei Ying is beautiful.
Wei Ying 123123zgugAHBD23g7q12e31 No u
Is Wei Ying blushing right now? If he is, Lan Wangji is sad he missed it. The image of Wei Ying’s flushed face from this morning is still clear and fresh and tantalising in his mind. He wonders whether Wei Ying’s blush ever spreads to other parts of his body… Mhm, that picture clearly was very ‘spicy’.
Lan Wangji It is spicy enough.
Wei Ying Lan Zhan!!!!!!!!!!111112313 Don’t wait to say these things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or I’ll think that you’ve been thinking about it and…
Lan Wangji Thank you for the picture.
Wei Ying Literally my pleasure Good night, Lan Zhan
Lan Wangji Good night, Wei Ying.
Friday, Thirteenth Day with Wei Ying
Today, Lan Wangji is the first one to arrive. He feels a bit awkward, sitting on the playground by himself. The wait until Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan arrive seems to stretch on for much longer than the fifteen minutes it takes. Wei Wuxian isn’t carrying A-Yuan in his arms, instead he’s almost being dragged onto the playground, A-Yuan pulling excitedly on his hand. As soon as he spots Lan Wangji, A-Yuan yells “Tall-gege” and then lets go of Wei Ying’s hand and… proceeds to run in circles across the sand, laughing.
Wei Ying walks over to Lan Wangji and sinks down onto the bench with a heavy sigh. Then he slides down until he can rest his head on the back of the bench and his sigh turns into a groan.
“Wei Ying?”
“Lan Zhan… can you make sure that my radish doesn’t eat too much sand and doesn’t climb anything he shouldn’t climb? My eyelids are stuck together,” Wei Ying whines. And indeed, his eyes are still closed.
“Mn.”
“Thank you, Lan Zhan is the best.”
“Are you… sick?”
“Ah no, just fucking tired. Worked on this idea I had all night, might turn it into my final project for uni, had to scrap it and redo a bunch of code though, didn’t get any sleep and-” Wei Ying yawns and rubs his eyes. “I think A-Yuan stole all my energy. Look at him” Wei Ying, eyes still closed, points in A-Yuan’s general direction, who is currently running around a tree while singing a song Lan Wangji is not familiar with. The melody is very catchy.
“Coffee?”, Lan Wangji offers, in lieu of a better idea.
“Mhm, already had a bunch… '' Wei Wuxian opens one eye and glances at Lan Wangji. Then he closes it again, shuffles and adjusts his position, until his head is resting on Lan Wangji’s shoulder. “Lemme just borrow your arm for a while, okay?”
“Mn.”
Wei Ying hums quietly and then wraps his arms loosely around Lan Wangji’s arm. It is as though Lan Wangji’s arm has found a new purpose as Wei Ying’s pillow. He doesn’t mind at all. Wei Ying can borrow anything of his that he’d like. Lan Wangji tries his best to be a good pillow, not moving at all, so Wei Ying will borrow him again in the future.
Wei Ying’s soft breath caresses his skin on every exhale and it is easy to wonder whether it would feel like this if they were to wake up next to each other. He thinks about his dream, the one where Wei Ying fell asleep on top of him, head resting over his heart. This is… very close. Lan Wangji smiles.
“Lan Zhan…”, Wei Ying murmurs, as though he’s halfway in a dream. “Feels so nice.”
“Mn.”
Lan Wangji suddenly wishes… wants to try something. And because this feels so comfortable, feels so right, he finds the courage to try. He slowly moves his unoccupied right arm and then gently rests his hand on top of Wei Ying’s left hand.
Wei Ying doesn’t react at all at first. Lan Wangji wonders whether he actually fell asleep. However, before he can take back his hand and his courage, Wei Ying turns his hand and intertwines their fingers.
They sit like this for a long time, holding hands, Wei Ying’s head on his shoulder. A-Yuan has finally stopped running and gotten out his shovel and bucket, to go do some important construction work in the sand. It is peaceful and quiet. The only sound Lan Wangji can hear is the beating of his own heart.
Nothing disturbs their intimacy, until…
“Wei Ying.”
“Mhm, Lan Zhan.”
“Did you put duct tape on your flip flops?”
“Ah… Yes. Are you admiring my creativity? Why throw something away, when you can simply fix it!”
“What is your shoe size?”
“Huh?”
Lan Wangji has already gotten out his phone and is searching for his preferred clothing store.
“Lan Zhan, what are you doing?” Wei Ying lifts his head from his pillow and leans forward, so he can look at the screen of Lan Wangji’s phone.
“Wei Ying needs new shoes.”
“Wei Ying will buy his own shoes! … Eventually.”
Lan Wangji ignores him and simply bends down, grabs Wei Wuxian’s ankle and lifts his leg, so he can look at his shoe size.
“Forty-four.”
He nods, sits upright again and goes back to his phone.
“Black?”
“The hell? Lan Zhan, don’t buy those, they’re way too expensive.”
“I don’t mind.”
He’s about to press ‘Order’, when Wei Ying puts his hand over Lan Wangji’s to stop him.
“Alright, I’ll buy new ones… Happy?”
“...“ Not happy, no. He’d really like to buy them for Wei Ying.
“Fine! I’ll order them right now!”
Wei Ying fishes his phone out of his pocket, right arm still curled around Lan Wangji’s and unlocks it. Lan Wangji only catches a short glimpse of the lock screen, but it is long enough to see…
“That’s me,” Lan Wangji states the obvious. His mind is too occupied with the monumental realisation that Wei Ying likes his pictures, likes Lan Wangji so much that he doesn’t mind looking at him on his phone, every day, many times… it is… Almost too much.
“Oh… ah, haha, yeah…” The flush is back on Wei Ying’s face and Lan Wangji would like to touch it. With his fingertips or with his lips.”Uh, well, it’s a really cute picture, isn’t it… with the bunnies… A-Yuan likes it too, so… anyway, let me go order some flip flops… mhm… there we go… 70 Yuan instead of 500! Bought!”
Wei Wuxian hurries to put his phone back in his pocket, then demonstratively squeezes his eyes shut and puts his head back on Lan Wangji’s shoulder.
“Nothing wrong with duct tape,” he huffs out. Lan Wangji smiles fondly, despite the exasperation he feels. “500 Yuan… ridiculous…”
After lunch time and nap time, once Lan Wangji is alone in his apartment again, the first thing he does is make Wei Wuxian’s ‘spicy’ picture his lock screen background. He thinks Cloud and Jade will understand why he replaced them.
Wei Ying Lan Zhan, A-Ning is feeling better He’s excited to spend the weekend with A-Yuan
Lan Wangji Alright. I’m glad he’s feeling better. Will I see Wei Ying on Monday?
Wei Ying !!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Saturday, Fourteenth Day with Wei Ying
Lan Wangji’s first impression of Wen Ning (after the picture that made him think he was Wei Wuxian’s husband) is… he’s quite intimidating. Wen Ning is tall, looks even taller because A-Yuan is sitting on his shoulders. His long, deep black hair is not decorated with braids today, but wildly frames his very pale face. He’s wearing a black t-shirt with very spiky letters and a skull and a black collar on his neck, studded with spikes. It doesn’t help with the nervousness coursing through Lan Wangji. It is really important to him that this man, who is an important part of Wei Ying’s life, will like him.
The three of them are waiting next to a fountain. Wei Ying keeps dipping his hand in the water and then flicking his fingers, spraying water droplets over A-Yuan, who laughs every time this happens. A lot of those droplets seem to land on Wen Ning’s face, who endures it all with a gentle smile.
Lan Wangji takes a deep breath, pulls back his shoulders and approaches them.
“Lan Zhan! You came!”
Wei Ying still sounds surprised about that every time and Lan Wangji wonders why. Of course he’s here. Of course he’ll go where Wei Ying is.
Wen Ning smiles and nods at him. Lan Wangji returns the nod.
Then he lifts his head a little to wave at A-Yuan, who… bends over, hands stretched out towards Lan Wangji, yelling “Tall-gege!”
He’s going to fall down, oh god. Lan Wangji quickly lifts his arms, so he can catch him before anything horrible happens. Wen Ning is still holding on to A-Yuans legs, maybe used to things like this, and now A-Yuan is awkwardly being held by both of them, arms around Lan Wangji’s neck.
“Got him?” Wen Ning’s voice is muffled by A-Yuan’s belly.
“Yes.”
Wen Ning releases his hold on A-Yuan’s legs and Lan Wangji carefully lifts him over Wen Ning’s head, until he can carry him safely in his arms. A-Yuan has been laughing through all of this, oblivious to Lan Wangji’s bone-deep horror. A panicked look in Wei Ying’s direction shows he’s laughing too. But from Wen Ning he receives an understanding nod.
“Lan Wangji, it’s nice to finally meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“Likewise,” Lan Wangji manages to say while struggling to keep a hold on a squirming A-Yuan, who is trying his hardest to touch the water from the fountain.
“Mhm, I doubt you heard about me in the same manner,” Wen Ning murmurs, glancing at Wei Ying. Before Lan Wangji can think about what that means or ask him to elaborate, Wei Ying steps between them.
“Ahaha, A-Ning, so funny. Hilarious. A-Yuan, stop being a monkey, monkeys don’t eat ice cream.”
“Radish!”
“Yes, exactly. You’re a cute little radish and radishes get all the ice cream.”
“Yay, ice cream!”
“Yay!” Wei Ying plucks A-Yuan out of Lan Wangji’s arms and then leads them to the ice cream parlour.
The multitude of flavours on offer overwhelms Lan Wangji. He rarely eats ice cream or any sweets at all. On the weekends, he occasionally indulges in a piece or two of dark chocolate, but usually his sensitive Lan stomach cannot handle much more. Oh well, he’ll just have to power through. He orders last (a scoop of lemon sorbet) and pays for everything before Wei Ying can stop him again.
They take their ice cream outside, sitting down on a stone wall facing the fountain. A-Yuan’s face is already a chocolatey mess and Lan Wangji is a little relieved Wei Ying is sitting next to him, serving as a possible buffer in case sticky hands go exploring. Wen Ning sits on the other side of A-Yuan but keeps throwing glances at Lan Wangji. Even though they don’t feel threatening or disapproving, his anxiety ramps up again all the same. He should talk to Wen Ning, but… Lan Wangji has always been better at ending conversations than starting them.
“Wei Ying said you play the guqin?” Wen Ning suddenly inquires. Lan Wangji feels Wei Ying tense up next to him.
“Ah, yes.” With a reply like that the conversation will immediately fizzle out and die, he knows, but what else could he say?
“That’s cool! Did you know that Wei Ying and I are in a band together?” Lan Wangji is grateful that Wen Ning keeps the conversation going, but it also feels that the comment is mostly meant for Wei Ying’s benefit, who’s not just tense, but has started squirming in his seat, glaring at Wen Ning.
“I did not.” But he immediately wants to know more, wants to hear songs, wants to see pictures.
“Hey, Wen Ning! We were in a band! Were! Past tense! Why are you talking about that now?”
“I want to know about the band,” Lan Wangji says to Wen Ning, ignoring Wei Ying’s indignant squawk.
“Yiling Laozu forever!” Wen Ning balls his left hand into a fist and punches the air. Wei Ying drags one hand across his face and groans.
“I… excuse me?” Lan Wangji has never heard that expression before.
“Yiling Laozu is our band! Wei Ying is the lead singer and of course plays his flute and-”
“A thing of the past! We disbanded!”
“Not officially, just because your brother-”
“ANYWAY, Lan Zhan, you don’t want to hear about my embarrassing teenage experimental metal electronica project, let’s all just never mention it again and-”
“I would like to hear it.” Lan Wangji is not at all familiar with the genre Wei Ying described, but since it is Wei Ying, it must be wonderful to listen to. He has such a nice voice, it will be just as nice when he’s singing.
“Oh trust me, you don’t. Lan Zhan should only ever listen to beautiful music.”
“Wei-gege, do you not like our music anymore?” Wen Ning sounds sad, his eyes wide and pleading but Lan Wangji gets the feeling that it is mostly for show.
“A-Ning, that’s not what I’m saying at all.” Wei Ying sighs, shoves the rest of his ice cream cone in his mouth and then continues talking while chewing. “Yiling Laozu is just… very, veeeeeeery niche and uh… “
“Lan Wangji, you should come visit us one day. I’ll play you some of our songs.” Wen Ning’s smile is a little too innocent, but it doesn’t take away from the invitation feeling genuine. Lan Wangji likes him.
“Thank you. I’d like that.”
Wei Wuxian sighs, drawn out and full of suffering, and puts his hand back over his face, murmuring to himself, “I bet this is Wen Qing’s fault, making her innocent little brother torture me like this.”
Wen Ning huffs a laugh and then A-Yuan demands everyone’s attention because he’s finished his ice cream and he’s not happy about it. Wei Ying gets out wet wipes to clean A-Yuans face and hands. He’s even less happy about that. However, his mood drastically improves as Wei Ying scoops him up into his arms and then carries him over to the fountain, pretending over and over that he’s going to drop him into it.
The packet of wet wipes appears in his view and Lan Wangji looks over to Wen Ning, who offers them with a smile. He nods his thanks and cleans his hands and finally feels himself relax. Wei Ying’s and A-Yuan’s laughter is bright and carefree, echoing across the square and Lan Wangji… Lan Wangji is so grateful Wei Ying sat down at his table that day in the library and wasn’t chased away by Lan Wangji’s frown.
Wei Ying Thank you for the ice cream So delicious~
Lan Wangji It was. Thank you for inviting me.
