Melancholia ep 1-2
A.K.A: No Teacher/Student Romance
Last week I got an ask about whether or not there was inappropriate romance between the teach and the student and I’m happy to say there is not. I didn’t actually think there would be (this is a k-drama) but there isn’t even a tiny speck, not even a meaningful gaze that could be construed as romantic. In fact, one time a romantic OST was playing while they were solving math problems and all I could do was laugh cause like, that was SO not the mood??
This is one of those evil corrupt rich people destroying lives for the academic rankings of their students k-dramas so far. And the teacher/student relationship is actually very lovely and appropriate. There is a romance but it’s clearly with math. Like, they are head over heals for math people.
I did see some screen grabs that looked a little suspect for the next episode (like, just don’t share headphones with your male student alone at night LMAO) but I’m pretty confident that Ji Yoon Soo, the adult is feeling very platonic about Baek Seung Yoo, and I don’t think that’s going to change (at least until the time jump). Maybe he’ll be into her I mean she is a gift but that’s pretty normal as long as she keeps boundaries.
I’m a little stressed with this drama overall, because I really don’t enjoy rich people politics and school trauma, but it’s super well done and I’m a fan of the leads. So far so good!

"Melancholia kdrama"- outcasting myths about the child prodigy/
Regarding all those unnecessary controversies related to melancholia (Those complaining about their age gap are the same one shipping the leads from "Now we are breaking up" with Song hye kyo who is 12 years older than Jang kiyong..)
I focused on the theme of the drama which is really fresh for me. It portrays the downside of being a child prodigy. Including parental, societal pressure, and social maladjustment. Baek-Seung-Yoo is a child prodigy but suffers from anxiety and lost because everyone treated him special and he has no real identity of his own. people around him judged him based on his academic performance as a result he can't adjust socially. Also, the aestheticism of this drama is magnificent <3.

Unpopular opinion ~ Identities and Boundaries...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I enjoyed this weeks episode even though most people did not like it. It was just nice to see two people go on a journey to find inspiration. I dint see anything wrong with it.
Infact it was a break from the totally toxic school environment. It was relaxing..
Ji yoon soo is closer to Baek Seung Yoo than other students. She shared things from her personal life with him. Maybe she was not acting like a professional teacher. The problem is she is not just a teacher. She is a person and a human with many other sides than just a teacher. She loves maths and she found a person who sees the world through a mathematical lens. Ofcourse that part of her is exicted to meet such a person. She actually did not really cross any borders. She introduced her father because she thought that Baek Seung Yoo might find some answers to his question. Why not ? Her father is a mathematician and her student someone who wants know about the maths that he did. Whats wrong with sharing knowledge? Who decides the boundaries of what should and should not be shared ? Should she hold herself back from sharing the joy and excitement that they have for the subject just because she is a teacher. Who decides what is professional and what is not.
Sung Ye Rin was least interested in wanting to know more and discover mathematics, she just wanted to be on top of the social, academic hierarchy. (Its not Sung Ye Rin's fault per say..She is under incredible pressure).
Baek Seung Yoo had also been through a lot and he finally found someone who dint pressurise him to do things because of his ability, but wanted him to do it because he likes it. The way his parents treat him, its no wonder he harbours affections towards the only person who tries to talk him into doing maths for the joy of it and not for being "special", winning medals or glory.
They had food late in the night, they listened to music together. So according to most people you can only eat late dinner and listen to music with lovers. Since when did those become romanticized. Its usually norm that students go to school and then come back home. Late night dinner with teacher is scandalous. What if the student and teacher were working on something. If there a progress and knowledge exchange happening isn't that a teacher duty ?
The real question is how much do they want to step out of their identities as teacher and student ? It that really wrong? This question is too early to ask though. Its funny though how people are already hating on it when nothing has even happened. People reacting like they are already in a relationship or something.
Think back and see if you were ever one person. No one had only one identity ever, but humans seem to be obsessed with boundaries and definitions. Are you an office worker ? Are you a student ? Are you a doctor ? Are you an electrician ? Are you a musician ? Are you a singer? Are you only that ? Do you always live within the boundaries of what society and what you yourself define you to be ?
