I get Alan Sepinwall's tv newsletter, and this week he teased how his upcoming book on The OC will shed light on the behind-the-scenes conversations around the Marissa/Alex relationship.
(the pic actually a gif of Seth's over-the-top reaction to Marissa in Alex's apartment)

Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz gave an interview about Alan Sepinwall's upcoming book and the process of looking back on the show, what they would have done differently, etc (Ryan/Summer?? absolutely not. Keeping Luke? yes). Of course, they talk about the decision to kill Marissa as well, with some new-ish insights there.
"Do you stand by the decision to kill off Marissa now?
Schwartz: We talk about it quite bluntly [in the book]. It’s something that we regret, and looking back on it, we wish we could have come up with a different solution. We didn’t see an alternative path at the time, which is why we went down that road. But obviously in hindsight, there were lots of other ways we could have written the character off the show—and given Mischa the break that she needed and wanted—that still would’ve allowed for that character to return."
