Were you on anybody’s side in the Brucas “I wanted to you fight for me” scene?

Both and neither. The thing about it is, that whole fight is a common argument or dilemma even if it's in different iterations, which was partly why when I did the rewatch I also paralleled it with Jackie and Hyde, like the whole "you should just know"

but even the whole, I wanted you to fight for me is a common fight

it's a sentiment that's even in, like, The Parent Trap

and I have spoken to guy friends where they tell me about an argument and they're confused about their girlfriend's or ex's reactions and I've just looked at them and been like yeah, she wanted you to work a little harder, try a little harder, go after her etc. and they've always been like WhY DiDn'T ShE sAy AnYtHinG? and i've been like

so even though I have the same reaction to Lucas in the situation, the fact that he was like well I'm just doing what you asked doesn't condemn him for me as a specifically Lucas-doesn't-know-Brooke problem, I think it's very teenage boy and he also learns from it. In The Wind That Blew My Heart Away, he follows her into a storm.

He doesn't let her just walk away, he does exactly what Brooke wanted him to do in 3x05, he tells her how much he wants to be with her

and he means it.

Which is ... I remember looking up Leyton scenes and I came across a comment on the whole prom dress clip where Lucas goes back to Peyton to apologize for seeing Brooke before her and a commenter was like this is how you know he loves Peyton because he never cared if Brooke was upset, he just let her go and didn't follow up and I rolled my eyes.

Not to mention, he's only doing the whole Rachel thing because he is actually doing to Brooke what Brooke is doing to him, i.e. he's trying to get her to see that she doesn't actually want him to date other girls

it just goes disastrously because Rachel is Rachel

and like always, Lucas is out of his depth

and all he had to say was I'm only with her to make you jealous and again the fact that he didn't know that just makes me go

With Brooke, I understand why she tested him, I understand her reaction to him not getting what she wanted, he cheated on her with her best friend and more than that when they were together, he made her feel special, he made her feel wanted, her made her feel like a person who was worthy to get to know and then he betrayed her with Peyton, that will hurt deeply. As a teenager, while I wasn't in the exact same position obviously, I do remember doing things like testing loyalties so I get it, at the same time she didn't communicate with him and lack of communication is going to cause friction. Plus, Lucas didn't ask Rachel to be in his car, he had proven that he doesn't just want to be with Brooke for sex

she pushed him to Rachel, which she admits

he had been fighting for her, he had been saying you want me with other people but I just want you

which is why she says "I wanted the Lucas Scott from the beach that night" so while I completely understand where she's coming from and while I think her needing to know if Lucas is serious about her is reasonable, her reaction to the situation was unfair but I also don't fault her for it.

So, like I said, neither and both.

Hi!! I've been watching One Tree Hill and ship Brucas so much. I was wondering if you could talk about all the reasons you prefer Brucas to Peyton/Lucas? I have trouble articulating it.

Firstly I’m sorry it’s taken me 5 years to reply to this, and you probably won’t even see it now 🤣

Firstly I’m a big lover in the ‘opposites attract’ trope and most of my OTPs fit within that.

Brooke brought out a different side in Lucas - she got him out of his shell, she made high school fun for him rather dragging him down into further depressive-ness and as well as this he also made her a better person.

Peyton pushed him away time and time again where as Brooke only ever tried to get closer to him. Lucas spent so much time convincing her how much he loved her. He brought up on various occasions how he thought Brooke was the one for him. When he thinks about who he wants next to him when his dreams come true - he thought of Brooke first. When his book gets published, he calls Brooke.

After the shooting and the Leyton kiss, Lucas spends all his time with Brooke (and Karen) and doesn’t give the kiss a second thought because it was the kiss of a girl who thought she was dying and didn’t mean anything to him - you’re not exactly gonna push away a dying person are you. There is barely any Leyton in season three, and I feel like Peytons admission of feelings at Naleys party really comes out of no where.

Brooke holds Lucas at arms length because she got hurt so badly the first time. A girl who before Lucas was all about fun and didn’t want anything serious, was now so in love with a boy she was constantly worried about getting her heart broken.

People pushed Lucas and Peyton together because they were both ‘tortured’. They were a train wreck whenever they were together for the most of the beginning of the show. I think Peyton was loving the attention in S1 more than anything because she’d been with Nathan who had been a jackass to her etc. Brooke and Lucas talked about the future, their dreams, where they were going to go to college and when they were going to be together. Peyton ran away at any talk of the future - whereas with Jake she was all ready to get married

I’m tired of Brooke bring up the fact that Rachel kept trying to get with Lucas, she keeps mentioning that time Rachel got naked and went into his car’s backseat. Like Brooke and Lucas had an open relationship at the time. Brooke was doing a lot with other guys, including going skinny-dipping with two lifeguards. One thing that’s annoying about Brooke is she remembers everyone else faults but conveniently forgets her own

Hi! Lately I was watching a lot of Brucas videos and read a bunch of comments mentioning how heartbroken Brooke was in there second time breaking up but no one ever mentions Lucas being heartbroken over it, on the contrary being angry at him (which I see why but he didn't *technically* cheated). Do you think, like Brooke, the break up had a lot of impact on him? Because for him the break up was out of nowhere (hence the "I'm sorry" response). Like he choose Peyton (after Brooke and bunch of people were pushing him to), do you think it was caused by the acceptance of loosing Brooke and needing someone instead of actually having the one he wants? Cause I read somewhere that once he got together with Peyton, he tried to convince her to sleep with him compared to giving Brooke the time she needs until she's ready. And the fact that he was trying to win Brooke back an episode earlier, it felt like he just needed someone that loves him (he just lost Keith and now Brooke). Like even in season 6 (Leyton season), I felt off with their scenes (and I was trying to be a leyton fan back then by watching their scenes, I didn't really know brucas), I always felt like he was trying to force himself to be happy instead of actually being happy (like I genuinely only liked 1 scenes of theirs when I was a fan of them). And now watching the few scenes of brucas in season 6 and even season 5, I felt a lot more emotions coming from him then with Peyton, like he had a sense of longing.

Also the fact that Lucas doesn't even know that Brooke still loves him because he thinks that she stopped loving him (he asked Karen how she stopped loving Dan when she knew he didn't love her anymore). Do you think if he found out the real reason why Brooke broke up with him (insecurity about Peyton's confession and that Lucas would leave her) and the fact that she never stopped loving him, he would try to get back together with her? I feel like he would have been mad at Peyton since he did talk to her about it in the library after the shooting (3x17) and made it clear that he loves her but that he is in love with Brooke. Basically, telling her "even if you love me, I am in love with Brooke and nothing will happen between us".

Sorry that this is a long ask, I am trying to rationalize the shitty writing even though I know that the Lucas and Brooke from season 3 would have never given each other up, if the writing were consistent.

The thing about the devolution of romantic Brucas is that the writing is inconsistent with what they spent two seasons constructing absolutely but I’m not going to come up with my own motivations for characters to explain that away? But what I can talk about is how in season 5 the show actually spends more time and effort showing an emotional connection in scene between Brooke and Lucas and constructs an adult relationship for them that also calls back to established dynamics from previous seasons:

while the “destined-for-each-other-soulmate-and-the-boy-who-saw-the-comet-once-in-a-lifetime-transcendental” relationship isn’t nearly as well constructed or written, it’s just everyone talking about how much they belong together

instead of showing us why and how and then excusing their lack of time together as too much angst about still being in love and too much pain about the past

which is all they talk about

instead of showing what this connection is exactly and how it’s evolved but the sentiment - whatever it is because like I’ve mentioned in previous posts even in season 1, they don’t actually do a good job in explaining why their connection is unique -- stayed true

like considering that the show has always used their tropes as reason enough to explain their “connection”

it isn’t earned to me that in season 5 Peyton saying “your art matters to me” is the only thing needed for Lucas to start writing his second book.

And I can talk about how considering the finale ends with a cliffhanger i.e. who is Lucas calling at the airport

and then the season 6 premiere begins with him thinking of different married life scenarios with each woman, we are supposed to be reading into things with their dynamic in season 5

and how as much time is dedicated to Peyton describing how much she loves Lucas and everyone telling Lucas how much he loves Peyton, there’s also a lot of dialogue about paths not taken, life not being the way you thought, adulthood being messy, letting go of being kids/teens, reimagining your life and so him not choosing Peyton wouldn’t have been out of the blue and would have kept in line with that theme

but things like this

that's us giving motivations for Lucas to make sense of writing

and this

or are you just letting the off-set drama affect the way you look at them? Like I’ve mentioned in the past, one of my problems with Lucas and Peyton is how devoid they are:

Leyton reminds me of this quote

[“What is it with you two, it’s like flirting but sexless”]

but instead of flirting and sex, it’s like affection and any real warmth or passion or actual feeling.

[...] affectionate Leyton scenes always felt put on, like look we’re affectionate and in love, instead of it being exuded

so yeah, it looks like he’s forcing himself to be happy because Chad is trying to get to that place and he’s playing at that, he’s not just in it
