I said what I said. I'm not saying encouragement isn't important. It is. But when it comes to indie, people put words in your mouth. They try to pretend they know how you feel. They dismiss the experience and wonder how you could be a downer or get into trouble often. And you're all probably thinking I'm not doing anything for my sales or I'm not doing enough to ask my friends and family. I added that info for a reason. Did you know that 98% of them don't care? That I take that other 2% with great pride? It's not a lot, but it's mine. I'm still an author. Mental illness is real. Abusive families exist. Trauma isn't a joke. Words do hurt. They run deep into our subconscious. And by not looking to change the system from the bottom up, our integrity means nothing. A Day in the Life of a Storyteller, Episode #12
Considering that our brains are wired for story—something that storytellers and humans alike have known intuitively for centuries, but which is now actually being backed by scientific brain research—it is understandable that stories can be powerful tools in influencing the way we think, act and feel.
Stories can be used for good, and for bad—in today’s world, we see the use of story in the media when discussing political candidates, when running advertisements, when trying to make someone think differently about something, anything, we revert to a story—for this is the most powerful, the most influential of rhetorical tools we have.
This has been an incredibly tense season of presidential stories and media, one that has brought out the worst in some, awakening a slew of people whose ideals and beliefs have been ostracized (for very important reasons—the fact that their ideals and beliefs directly attack and violate others’ beliefs and/or actual human existence), who have come forward in their hate and fear, finding validation from a high powered candidate to come forward and voice their ideas of what the story of this country is and should be.
I’m not going to lie, I’ve felt very scared. Driving across the country through the midst of it was a trip in all senses of the word.
Today, I urge all of you out there reading this to STOP READING and go to your polling station—then you can come back and finish reading my post :)!
In this country, the way we validate and support the stories we believe in is by voting, by speaking up in our social circles, on social media, and in our greater local and even global communities.
Let us please validate those stories that rather than divide us and categorize us in “us” and “them” groups, instead bring us together in hope and respect of all humanity, and the belief in our collective ability to move ourselves forward into a future where all beings are cared for, listened to, and valued.
As a storyteller, I believe it my duty to share the stories that bring us together, that make us think critically, and that serve a greater purpose beyond just pure entertainment. A mentor and friend, the legendary Storyteller Onawumi Jean Moss, once told me, “I am a story servant”, and that is what I seek to be—one that serves her community and the world through story.
We are all story servants in a way—we serve ourselves, we serve our families, we serve our country in the way we tell or perpetuate or carry on different stories.
What stories will you tell today?
What stories will you allow to be validated and valued?
I’ve said this quote before, but I feel it especially now—with great power comes great responsibility.
Going to the polling station today, even with my mail-in ballot in hand already filled out, I realized something I’d often wondered about—why so many people choose not to mail-in, but to go to their voting station on the day of—they are there to physically be together, to be a part of this collective experience, and be reminded that we really are all in this together.
