Master Tung: Okay. Kids, be good, play together, and don't be stupid. (leaves)
Benimaru: (closes the door) Yes!
Shun'ei: This is amazing.
Meitenkun, excited: We're home alone! You're the only responsible adult, and you're ridiculous!
Benimaru, thrilled: I know!! I'm not responsible at all!!

SHUN'EI from THE KING OF FIGHTERS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
JUSTIFICATION:
"Shun'ei's the protagonist of the current KOF storyline (ongoing). He's a young Chinese teen (no specific age is given but can be inferred) with short green hair, white headphones, and a very diorganized fashion sense (in my opinion)
When he was a young child, he manifested immense and destructive powers (Amplified Specters: Illusionary manifestations of all possibilities and souls of the universe) that caused his birth parents to abandon him and have Tung Fu Rue - a wise martial arts master - raise him away from the rest of the world. Shun'ei's a kindhearted person, but tries to put distance between himself and others due to worrying that he can't control his powers and hurt others. His worries over his powers cause him to feel very anxious in large crowded areas, in part due to his powers being fueled by the intense emotions, and thus is very insecure about his capabilities as a person. I think that Shun'ei's feelings of worry and doubt over his capabilities to handle his powers - to me - feel akin to the worries of not conforming to societal gender structures and/or performance, with how this doubt causes him to shy away from others and bottle up his true self much like how many trans people do before/during/after they transition.
I feel like that Shun'ei's character arc will be to finally open himself to others and thus fully control his powers, and that arc would change him both positively and radically, and for me the best way for this arc to conclude would be to transition to a girl.
Plus, I feel like Shun'ei would be happier as a girl, with how his closest peers in his life are Meitenkun - childhood best friend/adopted brother who's incredibly supportive of him, aswell as very kind and sleepy - and Isla - she was antagonistic at first but she becomes friendlier at the end; she herself is very rebellious of the status quote and has similar Amplified Specter powers as him - would help him find his true self and even transition into a girl.
I.e. I feel like Shun'ei's an egg at this point." - @jkflay

I think I’ve finally figured out why Iori initially hated Kyo so much during the course of the Orochi saga.
Disclaimer: please keep in mind that this is only a theory, and if SNK releases something to the contrary, then I will amend my theory accordingly.
(This is a long post, so I’ll put it under the cut.)
According to the KOF: Kyo manga, Iori was once a sweet, shy and timid kid.
Tumblr media
However, something must have happened - it could be that his father lost to Saisyu and subjected him to severe physical and verbal abuse over his loss to his rival, or that he blamed his son for the death of his wife (or possibly both).
Whatever may have happened, his personality started to change completely (if this official artwork by Falcoon is of any indication).
Tumblr media
As he matured, Iori gradually became more bitter and angry, although he did manage to become a successful musician along the way. However, he still remains aloof and apathetic, accepting his fate that he will die young. In addition, he still can’t exactly become close to others, as per his family’s blood curse - if he happens to fall in love with a girl and the latter happens to become pregnant, the latter will die in childbirth, and the vicious cycle will repeat.
This is why he refused to perform with the Konoe and Kikuri Tanima, the two girls from the drama CD, and didn’t reciprocate the romance towards them. He had to sacrifice that gig with them in order to protect them from his curse, as he can potentially harm them while he is under the Riot of the Blood.
https://snk.fandom.com/wiki/The_Sun_and_The_Moon_~_Prologue
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd_TASU0QNoS3sxUrsjQLyvt2F7LCDdVq
All the while, his hatred for Kyo Kusanagi steadily grew - Kyo was someone who had a normal life in spite of his family’s history and powers. He was able to have friends, moral support from his family and even having a steady relationship with his girlfriend. Meanwhile, Iori had none of those luxuries in his life - he was a man who had to struggle and work hard for everything he had.
What am I trying to get at with this, you may ask?
It is jealousy - or rather, envy.
And all of this infuriated Iori - to the point where he wanted to kill his bitter rival. His own seething hatred, combined with Orochi’s influence and the false promise that his curse will be lifted, set the pyromancer on this destructive path. However, this was an irrational hatred on Iori’s part, as his perception of his rival was distorted by not only his aforementioned hatred, but also by the effects of Orochi on his mind, which did no wonders for his mental health (and ultimately leading him to an identity crisis).
Tumblr media
We all know that he eventually mellows out in the later games, of course. Even some of the other fighters (like Tung Fu Rue) point out that he actually enjoys fighting Kyo, and he doesn’t want to kill him for that reason. Of course, Iori denies it (being the total tsundere that he is).  Deep down inside, a part of him also desires friendship with Kyo...but of course, he also dismisses that idea.
I hope my theory makes sense, so feel free to discuss it with me.

the things iori does regarding kyo drives me insane.
follow him around everywhere to threaten his life and challenge him to a fight? ok weirdo. and kyo just treats this as a minor inconvenient. it’s been more than 20 years asshole, the bastard’s still alive
no matter how many times iori says he’ll kill kyo. he won’t do it. he can’t do it. the moon would be lonely in the sky without the sun
kyo is the one consistent thing in his life that he actively pursues. he has a life outside of that, with being in a band and all, but kyo is the one who gets him to make drastic decisions. his life is short due to the orochi curse and he spends a good amount of that time chasing after kyo.
going after him, that thrill of fighting against him regardless of their family rivalry, kyo feels like a beacon of hope within iori’s lonely life.
when orochi is sealed away and kyo is taken by nests, iori is the one to look for him. not his family or friends, his rival. and iori sure does find him! multiple of him. with hundreds and thousands of clones slaughtered you’d think his “murder kyo” quota would be satisfied but no. he only wants the original.
I DUNNO WHY BUT THAT JUST STICKS OUT TO ME
and when you read his team story for 99? it’s....intense. he sounds desperate.
nests is probably my favorite arc 2 of my 3 kof ocs are products of nests but that’s besides the point
cut to ash arc and all the stuff that happens there. chizuru’s treasure gets taken followed by iori’s. meanwhile kyo’s just angry about everything. Just angry. probably repressing his feelings but that’s a rant for another day
when ash erases himself from existence and the treasures are able to be taken back, iori has the option not to. and by all means not having the yasakani magatama is a good thing. he wouldn’t have purple flames, he wouldn’t have to deal with the orochi curse, wouldn’t have to enter the riot of the blood, he wouldn’t have his life cut short-
iori could have lived a normal life by not taking back the magatama.
and yet. he reclaimed his flames. because without them he didn’t feel equal to kyo.
which drives me crazy because he is still on par with him! he reworked his entire kit to work without fire. and, if anything, i think his moveset without flames is more brutal!
the man could’ve put everything behind him: the yasakani, orochi, the kusanagi. and he didn’t. the first thing he does after getting his flames back is challenge kyo.
i still gotta think more for the amplified specters arc since there isn’t a lot to be said
though there is that interaction iori has with tung fu rue
Tung: Oh, such a menacing tone! Your sins are deep... Is that boy causing you to act this way? Iori: This has nothing to do with you... I'm gonna kill him. Get in my way and I'll kill you where you stand! Tung: Hm... You actually enjoy this kind of situation, don't you? And that's why you haven't killed him. Am I wrong? Iori: Hmph... What a bunch of crap.
honestly i think this dialogue speaks for itself
iori lives a lonely life yet kyo is always there. i’m trying to think of what to say to wrap this all up but nothing’s coming to me. there’s definitely something i forgot to say, i just don’t remember what it is right now.
kyo and iori’s relationship fascinates me so much it’s unbelievable

Realbout Fatal Fury Special

Tumblr media
Kyo has good intentions but comes off as quite cocky. Kyo Kusanagi is the main protagonist of the King of Fighters series. So, without further ado, here’s the King of Fighters XIV roster. Combatants native to other SNK series such as Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, and Art of Fighting make significant appearances throughout this list. There are 18 new characters, with two teams consisting of entirely new fighters. Alongside non-playable bosses, the total roster of characters sits at 50. The roster of The King of Fighters XIV features massive 16 teams consisting of three fighters each, the standard grouping of characters for the series. New and old characters alike fill out the exciting King of Fighters XIV roster of playable characters, bridging from all across the series’ history. The new game introduces the first ever 3D models in KOF history, replacing traditional hand-drawn sprites. SNK’s long-running fighting game series, The King of Fighters, receives its latest installment in The King of Fighters XIV.
