[1964] “Well what’s behind us, then?” Demanded Monty. “It’s Thomas!” Said the foreman. “Hello, everyone!” Smiled Thomas. “Miss Jenny asked for me to bring you all some more empty trucks.” Monty and Max felt silly. They went a beautiful shade of red. “We know what Thomas’s whistle sounds like!” Monty snapped. But everyone else had a good laugh. The two dump trucks went back to work, feeling very on edge. They hadn’t brought it up, but the whistle they heard was very different to Thomas’s. “The light wasn’t even on the damn tracks.” Max whispered. “There is no One-Eyed Truck,” Monty grunted, trying hard to sound brave. But as they made their way through the trees, eyes darting all around, they could never be quite sure.

Here's Lady and Mavis as an example.

Monster steam engines and diesels have similar features, but are incredibly different looking at the same time.

Steamies

Steamies have thick coats of fur to help keep their fireboxes lit up for longer periods of time. They tear out the excess fur in Spring so they don't overheat and get heat stroke. Their claws are as hard as diamonds and help them keep an iron grip on their prey. Steamies can also perform a move on prey called a "death rail", its where the engine will charge at its enemy to knock them over, and depending on the enemy's size, will then proceed to crush them while they're disoriented with their full body weight. Diesels can also do this, but it's rarely done.

Steam engine eyes are often dry due to the heat inside them, so they need eye drops a lot. Diesel engines use their own fuel to lubricate their eyes if they ever dry up. American steam engine beast forms simply depend on the sole purposes of their existence.

Diesels

Diesel engines are very lizard-like in appearance, and their skin often feels like gravel or can feel very smooth. Their paws and feet are sticky enough for them to withstand steep slopes, and their claws also assist with finding traction. Diesels can let out loud purrs or growls from their engines, which benefits for scaring off hunters. Their tails are strong enough to grab prey. They shed their skin every couple months to ensure they stay clean.

As for the American variants, they just look like alligators.

Cranes

Crane beasts are very different to any other monster vehicle indeed. Unlike others who can freely move about, Cranes remain stationary. Monster cranes never have the desire to move anywhere else and are quite satisfied with wherever they are, but will move if they are required to.

For eating, cranes have the weird, yet amazing ability to bend and twist their support beams, so imagine Cranky's entire support beam bending back so he can reach the ground to talk to Salty or Porter face-to-face. As for food, Cranes can bend and snatch up their prey from the ground, or even fish for food with their hooks.

Planes/Helicopters

Air beasts like Harold or Hugo the Jetplane are very avian-looking in appearance, which fits in with their flying abilities. So, air beasts look like birds, but not fully. They mostly have their original appearance, but have feathers all around their bodies and talons. Planes like Hugo can store away his talons and can now move his wings like a bird can. Helicopters and planes are both different in dietary preferences, whereas Helicopters don't have to eat, and planes eat whales and sharks.

More AEG au lore, Tess is one of the few machine kids out there who has a human parent. Due to her model she wasn't really easily movable, she appeared in her place all of a sudden and from the moment she opened her eyes she had that stubborn attitude she's known for. It's just part of how she is.

They didn't really know what to do with Tess at first. She appeared in a spot where no other crane was. All by herself and without anyone to look to for guidance or care. Originally she wasn't even going to stay there, they'd meant to uproot her and bring her to sit next to Cranky, but he didn't want to take on another kid at the time and flat out refused to take Tess in. So they were at a bit of an impass, that is until a kind lady who lived down near Kellsthorpe offered to look after the young crane, so she named her and openly accepted her as her daughter.

Tess' mom is a bit of a strict woman herself, which is only partly why Tess developed a bit of a pushy and stern attitude towards others. She wasn't able to really interact with other kids until the young engines started to show up down there which meant Tess wasn't well socialized with others her age. She only ever encountered grown ships, engines, and humans, so she believed she had to be a lot tougher to match how much more grown up they are. Tess' mom visits her often and she gets lots of love and attention, she just wasn't around other kids all that much for a good few years.
