two years of evermore

In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning. I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales. I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found. So I just kept writing them... I have no idea about a lot of things these days and so I’ve clung to the one thing that keeps me connected to you all. That thing always has and always will be music.

See, TTPD and the vibes are what I thought we would be getting after evermore. evermore is soaked in sadness and pre-breakup relationship grief that I really thought it was the breakup album. You're gonna tell me you listened to tolerate it and happiness and champagne problems and thought they were heads over heels in love?

I understand that Taylor Swift is a musical artist. She needs to make music to, you know, make money, but the pain in her voice in tolerate it and champagne problems and happiness just... sounds so real and raw. And that was back in 2020. This is 3.5 years later. And if it was written back when You're Losing Me was written? My heart is already breaking for this album

was having a good day until i realised the two verses of champagne problems are told in the second person pov and only talk about “your” actions & emotions. YOU booked the night train. YOU told your family. YOUR hometown skeptics. it’s not until the bridge that we start understanding why the girl turns the proposal down, how she’s struggling mentally & just isn’t ready?? so it’s really like a sort of buildup and big reveal, especially when the world around her (her lover’s “crestfallen” reaction, the gossip around the town) so strongly influences what the girl feels & thinks about herself and she stays out of the narrative & the spotlight until she can’t hold it back anymore. it also adds a sense of detachment: you did this, you did that, without me because we’re not together anymore. taylor swift is a genius in this essay i will

the thing about folklore and evermore you always hear is that they're sister albums. and i think that is true on so much more than just the surface-level fact they sound similar. they're sister albums in the sense that, from the first glance, like when you see sisters, you think, huh, they're so similar! and you think that about the albums. but when you get to know sisters, you realise they're so different, they have such unique energies and it's true for folklore and evermore.

to me, folklore is the younger sister, she's free, she's summer-y, she's sad in a teenage-heartbreak and teen way, she's young and she's a free spirit, and when i listen to folklore, i'm not in my room, but i'm sitting on the cliffside, below my feet, a chasm. i'm in a field full of flowers. i'm sitting under a tree near a lake. i'm in the middle of a forest on a summer's day. i'm screaming ferociously at the sky. i'm dreaming of the future, and dwelling on the past. and most importantly, i'm free.

and on the other hand, for me evermore is the older sister. she's more mature. and she's comforting. she's if september/october/november/december were a person. she's poetic. she's in love. she's experienced heartbreak like no other. she's reading old books and writing poetry. when i listen to evermore, i'm not in my room. i'm in a library late at night. i'm wandering 'round a castle. i'm in a dark mansion, sitting by the only candle there. i'm underneath a willow tree, dreaming of my love. i'm sitting on a bench while leaves fall down around me. i'm wandering around a forest that is somehow magical. i'm lighting candles and writing on parchment. i'm writing in swooping, sloping, cursive letters about my one and only. my feelings fit on the page and rhyme comes naturally. and at the end of the day, what i'm feeling is sadness, but unlike folklore, it's not freeing, but it's comforting.
