do you happen to have a discord server, or know of any good HS discord servers? i think itd be fun to meet other HS fans but idk where to look lol

when i first started posting online again i joined the mspfa server and posted to the art channel every now and then. my interactions with people were sparse but at the time i thought it was fun to have some social interaction with other mspa fans for the first time in my life. id consider joining it again but i haven't been feeling very sociable after i deactivated my old twitter so i dunno when i would try. i gained some traction there by sharing my oc verita, she was very popular and is the reason i got peoples' attentions. i remember someone even made a theme song for her and i thought it was sooo cool lol..

i think i must have gotten really lucky, during the time i was hyperactive(?) and posted a loot of art of her and requests of other peoples' characters with her, people really liked my fantroll designs so i got further attention from that.

i think people also liked my animations? idk. i gained like, 6k followers in a really quick period, at a time in my life where i was really unstable and was trying to strip myself of someone who plagues my thoughts. i deactivated that account and have since been really anti social lol.

i used to have one server that was pretty active, it was dumped on me by the person mentioned prior so i really resented it. eventually i couldn't take it anymore and deactivated the server on impulse..

ive since made a new server, it's kinda private and basically dead since i stopped checking in on it every day. i dont really have the energy i had earlier this year ive been pretty worn out and brain dead, but i feel a lot more relaxed at least. i mightt consider inviting new peopple to it? i haven't decided if i want to or not, it's just me moderating (and also ko but he's really only a mod to approve of people who send intros when im not available)

i feel lucky that the group of people i have in it are really nice and well behaved : ) maybe ill offer to invite people again. if you want to join to can dm me and ill check you out, see if i want you in..

sorry for the ramble im not really the best person to ask about this!! i really only have any friends in the homestuck community because people approached me first, although some were really unsavory individuals im still grateful for the opportunities i was given because of it.

Hey sorry for the dumb question, am new around here, i read Sovereignstuck on mspfa(quite enjoyed it) but something that has made me curious looking trough your blog is that you mention sov versions of the alpha trolls, and i was curious how they participate in the story with how it takes place in Earth C and the alphas are all dead and stuff.

Glad you're enjoying it, that means a lot!! It's still really early into its serialization, and therefore in the setup/foundation establishment phase that so many Homestucks seem(ed) to absolutely fucking hate for some reason, so it's nice to hear that it's not boring people to death. I'm definitely trying my best to still make it interesting at least, lol.

To Answer Your Question: Paradox Space did a funny and Reincarnated its Unresolved MVPs. The Patrons are not literally the Alpha Trolls as we know them in Homestuck, kind of like how The Guardians are not literally the Alpha Kids, despite being the same people in name. Different environment, different context, different means of existence. These factors create different characters entirely, though they share a name, classpect, certain character details, and have somewhat similar designs. One (The Guardians/Alpha Kids) is caused by a Scratch, while the other (Alpha Trolls/The Patrons) is a Spin-Off. Similar but different. Simple stuff, I think. Then again, I wrote it and I'm used to it, so it could be an instance of Frog Boiling.

This week's been great! You spent it eating takeout and messing with your GUITARS. It's what you do every week, but that's never bothered you before. It's been a good night. What day of the week is it again? Oh right, it's the day where you're expecting a PACKAGE! That's definitely something that's happening now that wasn't happening last week.

Well, hello there! It's Waterworks' 14th anniversary, and I was thinking it might finally be time to try something just a little bit different.

Eagle-Time came back (as https://eagle-time.org, so update your bookmarks if you haven't deleted them yet); I'll be watching for suggestions both there, here, on MSPFA, and generally wherever my eyes happen to be. Additionally, I will need to update the information on all three sites and ensure they link together properly. I'm not going to post full updates here on tumblr, but I will post a link to MSPFA and Eagle Time just like before. I also need to take the time to design a logo/thumbnail, and figure out an issue with my webhost that's preventing images from loading 100% of the time. I suppose some cobwebs have built up.

With all that out of the way, there are a few key points.

This isn't Waterworks. I don't intend for this adventure to be comparable in size or scope to Waterworks. I've been yearning to just sit back and tell a story, so that's what I'm going to do.

There will be no Flash animations and gif output will be limited. As much as I love Flash, fighting with the pressure to turn every cool idea into an epic animation has taken its toll on me. I'm going to nip this in the bud and say that there will be no Flash animations at all. There will be gifs, but they will be toned down to keep stress at a manageable level - The adventure will run locked at 18fps, and I will not use any colour gradients. There's some cool stuff you can still do at 18fps. If you're disheartened about the lack of full animations with sound, I'd like to direct you to a musician named Nstryder. I'm a fan of his music and have listened to a lot of it while scoping out the adventure. His music has been an excellent inspiration and I'll try to call some of it out when I hit relevant points in the adventure.

Regular updates will be attempted, but not guaranteed. The adventure itself will also have a set lifetime, whether or not it ends up finished. This one's hard for me. Life has happened. As much as I would like to update every day, it simply isn't possible. But I'm still going to try. I've set a weekly quota for myself to meet (but I'm keeping it to myself for now). If I can't make a day, I will communicate the delay on tumblr as soon as I am able. Additionally - I don't want this adventure to stretch out way past its prime. I've got a tentative end-date in mind for when to shut things off (regardless of the adventure's status), but I'm not willing to commit to it just yet. I'm gonna see how these next few weeks go and build some confidence before settling on a particular date.

I think that's it for now. I've gotta go fix that network error. I'll try to shape up everything else as the week progresses.

synopsis: h retelling of the romcom, “how to lose a guy in ten days” karkat has to write an article about how to lose a guy in ten days, and dave has a bet that he can find a guy to take to his sisters wedding. very silly :)

thoughts: there’s so many moments where i was cringing SO HARD. but it’s such a fun time, especially if you like cheesy romcom retellings. like karkat trying desperately to lose dave is so funny 😭 (you will see later that i am a big fan of cheesy romcom stories, so i’m sorry LOL).

Nothingbound by bluberi (unfinished)

synopsis: a retelling of the romcom, “you’ve got mail” karkat is a local bookstore owner, and dave’s brother is a chain bookstore owner, and is moving in across the street. the only solace karkat seems to find is in his online friend, who is actually his enemy all along. angst ensues, drama, enemies to lovers, slowburn etc etc. :D

thoughts: speaking of romcom retellings… this one is unfinished, but the chapters there are so much fun. i adore the art that goes along with it. and just how silly, and angsty it can be. the dave and karkat are SPOT ON. and same with all the other characters. i especially enjoy rosemary, and the ones who work at karkats book store :)

Doc Scratch's School for Supernaturally Gifted Adolescents by medical (finished)

synopsis: humanstuck superhero au. dave and his friends get a mysterious letter to attend a supernatural school.

thoughts: literally in my top three favorite homestuck fics of all time. this is so much more than just a davekat fic, like it’s a *whole* story. there’s also incredibly prominent rosemary, like they are not just shoved to the back. again it’s so thought out, and incredibly tropey. and all the characters are handled so well. it’s so incredibly fanfiction, but in the way where you can’t stop reading it. it’s popular for a reason, and very much deserves that popularity. i’m currently making my friend buddy read this with me <3

A Discussion On The Meteor (finished) (mspfa)

synopsis: short mspa story discussing karkats sexuality. i wanted to throw in a visual one for fun :)

thoughts: very sweet!!

Giving a Sweet Wretched Flying Fuck by strawberrystardust (oneshot)

synopsis: dave and karkat mix some sick beats on the meteor 🕺

thoughts: SO SO CUTE. i will recommend you try literally any fic by strawberrystardust, they are all incredibly, and they are such an amazing writer. please look into the tws for their other fics, but i literally cannot recommend them enough :)

YEAHHH, new couple time 🕺

Love Letters in Digital Ink by tactfulGnostalgic (finished)

synopsis: rose owns a popular occult blog, kanaya is a fan. kanayas family moves in next store, and rose posts about her.

thoughts:

TOP THREE HOMESTUCK FICS AGAIN. this one is SO SILLY, it captures everything about rosemary perfectly. the cringe fail of it all, the rose thinking she’s a therapist but instead just over sharing her family’s issues online. it’s so funny, and well written. and i say this as someone who HATES first person pov in fics. it is done incredibly well. like, this author manages to pull it all off. rose’s blog post are so funny, and it will have you smiling like a fool the whole time. this and doc scratch school, and house of dirk are definitely like fics id want you to read the most out of this list!! :)

Kiss Her You Fool by Paech (oneshot)

synopsis: rose tries to get kanaya to kiss her

thoughts: incredibly cute, i love them so so much. rose lalonde will forever be a mess, and i love that for her <3

courses of action, best and otherwise by MisPronounce_and_MisAccent (oneshot)

synopsis: rose is convinced she’s in a war with dave, of which one is “gayer” to win she fakes dates kanaya.

thoughts: ajdhajhshej, this one is so 😭😭 like vrisrezi is also there and they are all failing, they are all a mess. the synopsis makes it sound more serious, but they are in meteorstuck, and it’s just very very funny LOL

miscellaneous

this is for fics/other fanworks, that are either 1. a couple i haven’t read enough for them to have their own category, 2. stories focused around non-romance!!

if you’re looking into getting into some mspfas, i’d recommend these :) (though i haven’t finished them myself lol!!)

Act 8 (unfinished i’m pretty sure) (mspfa)

synopsis: basically a, “what if” different ending to homestuck. what if, instead of winning, they let their alpha selves win, and they had to stay in paradox space for the time loop? etc

thoughts: i have not finished it, but it’s honestly so well put together. it really gets you feeling bad for characters, like gamzee?? poor little guy etc. the art is amazing, and it really does just feel like a continuation of homestuck!!!

Karkat Goes to a Convention (unfinished?) (mspfa)

synopsis: just like the title says, LOL.

thoughts: i’m not sure if this story is really my jam, that being said, it’s put together WONDERFULLY. like it’s incredibly popular for a reason. you can tell so much work went into it, and just a really big love for homestuck and it’s community. while also being really creative :) (i also haven’t finished this one either, so maybe my thoughts could change!)

House of Dirk by imarriedacherub (unfinished) (visual!)

synopsis: sitcom of dirk and caliborns life as a married couple. and their son/son in law is coming over for dinner. shenanigans ensue

thoughts: OKAY, so i know this is the fic that prompted the ask, lol! which means i’ve already recommended it. but i decided to add it so i could post my thoughts! :D i did not have any feelings towards dirkuu when i first read this, but now whenever i see anything dirkuu i’m like, “omg…the sitcom couple…” ITS JUST SUCH A GOOD FIC. i keep overusing the word incredible in this post, but i will use it again. because this fic really is just *that good*. i made my friend voice act it out with me on call once, and it was very fun LOL. this is my final top 3 in my top three homestuck fics 🕺 again really popular, but popular for a reason. just so much thought went into it, and the execution was perfect.

Trying Something New by strawberrystardust (oneshot) (jaderezi)

synopsis: terezi and jade go on a picnic date! :)

thoughts: have i ever thought about shipping terezi, and jade before? admittedly, no. is this fic absolutely adorable?? yes, very much so!!! literally they both deserve the world, and it’s so cute to seem them interact with each other. again just a very very sweet fic :)

homestuck v2 (mspfa) (ongoing!)

synopsis: different new generation kids!! davekat fanchild comes in and messes up timelines.

thoughts: the art is so good!! i’m really looking forward to where the story goes, and i love the designs. davekat having a child named, “mary-su” is hilarious as it is genius. also babe coelho seems so beloved!!!

With the 4th of August just around the corner, I was thinking about a little something The Tapestry does that I really like and that is its portrayal of how it is to be a weird lonely little nerd.

Warning comically huge rant. I wasn't planning for it to be this long. I do not know what possessed me. It's 2:30 in the morning.

In Homestuck proper, the beta kids are also lonely kids who only really have eachother, however Homestuck's setting kind of obscures this fact because Beta Earth, really, truly, feels empty. Unless there is something I'm forgetting (I haven't read actual Homestuck in a while, oops. I should really re-read.) Beta Earth is just normal 2009 Earth. And you can see that if you look at all of the cultural references in it. Earth Beta isn't empty because all of John's shitty movies had to have been produced by someone, because someone had to have been frequenting Bro's weird puppet porn website, because we literally see other human beings talk trough the Internet on Dad's PDA and such (I wonder whatever happened to fedoraFreak haha). Beta Earth isn't objectively empty, of course. Yet it feels like so, because its main cast seems to only superficially exist in it. You could probably assume John, Rose and Dave all went to school (funnily enough I looked it up and April 13th 2009 was a Monday. Damn brats, skipping middle school so they can contribute to the creation of a new Universe.) because that's what kids their age do (Jade doesn't count for obvious reasons). Yet we never really seem to see or hear about all that. These kids only interact with eachother and their guardians (well, the living ones anyway), and so it's hard to see Beta Earth as a planet with a living breathing ~6880 billion humans on it. It's really more of a cardboard cutout of Earth, where the idea of culture and people is there, but none of the moving parts are present.

And so, it really feels like, even though Jade is the only one who is actually secluded, all 4 kids live in isolation, their only window to social interaction being their computers and the Pester Chum client. It feels like John, Rose, Dave and Jade are the only real individuals on Earth, because even their guardians don't feel like much more than placeholders or just vessels for one joke or stereotype. And this makes it seem like the kids are placed in this impossible full yet empty world, which is not something any of us are living in (I hope so!).

Most lonely people aren't alone . You can't say Homestuck's portrayal of loneliness, especially at that young pre-teen to teen age is accurate because it literally feels like the cast is alone (sans Jade bla bla I said this already) and so of course they'd be lonely. In any case, it portrays being lonely (take a shot everytime I write this word. Or don't! It depends on how suicidal you're feeling at this particular moment) all the same, just in a different (and less likely) way.

And with that bigger than I expected speil about Homestuck out of the way, let's get to the actual post. It has been said already the The Tapestry is an amazing MSPFA on so many fronts, but I'll say it again, just because it deserves it. The Tapestry is great, go read it if you haven't.

The main cast of the comic (sadly not counting Sedranovel, Limeweld and Expanaiver. I know they're technically also protagonists but they just.... don't really fit the idea I'm trying to portray here. Sorry!) is also 4 youths who play a God Damn Game. They're aliens too, but they're "like a human but..." type of alien, so their world is not all that different form ours. And a thing you'll notice right away as you start reading the comic is the emphasis that is placed on the worldbuilding, from the grand aspects like the the Solar System on the alien world and its geographical and political structure to the minute aspects like a mecha anime or the educational system of just one of many nations. Right of the bat, unlike Beta Earth, Siltsphere is bustling with life, culture, conflict. It helps that we also get to literally see other setyrs, lots of them in fact. It's nice eye candy, since they're usually part of the huge sweeping landscape scenery porn pages, but it's also a stark reminder of what is at stake. All of the supernatural fuckery afoot now affects not only the protagonists but also a planets entire civilization.

And yet, the main cast seems to gravitate towards eachother only. And unlike in Homestuck, we know that they have acquaintances and that they talk to others. Sosav mentions her neighbors, Handa makes friends with the pagan kids at his school, Deime tries (and fails) to connect with his countrymen. They have a form of social lives, each different, but they exist and they acknowledge the existence of a complex world with lots of real individuals. But they're all best friends with eachother. Oenia mentions that she doesn't really have friends outside of the other 3 and I think this is true for all of them.

Each off the 4 main characters is a bit weird and they're all definitely huge nerds. That is to say, they're all very passionate about their interests. And, sadly, intense passion, especially when directed at something not viewed as necessary to society, can sometimes be very alienating. Because most of the time it's hard to find someone who shares the same spark of love for that thing. I think Handa illustrates this problem the best, what with his... I want to say inferiority complex but that sounds kind of mean haha. He definitely loves history and art, and he is good at them too. Excellent, really. And yet, we hardly see him proud of his achievements. Because he thinks that his talents are a waste of time and energy, because they're not "necessary". Because those passions don't prepare you for a "real job". Because the world goes round thanks to the work of scientists, not artists. This is all really relatable to me personally, to a scarily accurate degree. And this sort of thinking is sisyphean, really. Because you'll reach a high where you think you did good, where you look at your art and say "wow, I've gotten better, this genuinely looks good!", but then the little shitty voice at the back of your mind will remind you that drawing won't help you solve cancer or launch rockets or whatever and therefore you're useless to society. And if this thinking sounds dramatic that's because that's how it is. Sosav literally calls Handa out on this, which shines a light on the fact that, since Handa lives in an almost-utopia society, he really shouldn't have to worry about stuff like that. And he shouldn't, but he does, because this line of thinking doesn't make sense anyway!

I wrote all that just for one of the characters! Imagine if sat down to dissect the others too. I could write 3 different posts just about Deime. But I won't because then I'll probably forget what the point of the post actually is. Yeah, there's a point. Remember the point? Jesus.

The point about being a lonely stupid nerdy kid. Like I said before, being super into something can sort of isolate you from your peers, because it's just hard to connect with those you don't have a lot in common with. But that doesn't mean you won't talk. You'll greet eachother, have meaningless conversations about whatever during recess, maybe you'll even hang out outside of school. But, really, there will never be anything there. Because it just feels like your brains are wired differently. Of course, I feel like the parallel to neurodiversity is starting to become obvious here. I'd say more, but I'm not an expert and while I do suspect that I am neurodivergent myself, I was never and probably will never be diagnosed by a professional, so I can't really say I'm in a position to write about this.

That's how you become lonely without being alone. And it's worse, because you'll see the people (or setyrs, I guess) in front of you and they're your age, and they're just like you, and they're going trough the same life experiences, but there just isn't any spark there. The thread to connect to them just isn't long enough.

That's why you need other weirdo nerds in your life. And thank fuck for the Internet. Because otherwise, where would I be ranting into the void about some fancomic to probably one or two people, or maybe just myself? Hah.

The main characters are all into very different things and they're from pretty different environments, yet they seem to click together anyway. And it's because I think when you're a passionate nerd, seeing someone just like you makes you admire them. And they don't have to be way better or more skilled than you, they could be just at your level, yet you feel enamoured by their passion nonetheless and they feel the same for you and that's friendship! Handa admires Sosav for her physics knowledge and Oenia for her art improvement, Deime, despite his bickering with Handa, definitely recognizes his (comically potent) art skills and Oenia is amazed by Deime's "search engine skills". It's all really cute. I love it when in bigger groups of friends you can tell that everyone is friends with everyone and they all have unique relationships with eachother.

That being said, I believe that, miraculously, I may be reaching the end of my... whatever this is. This thought vomit. This is mainly just me writing down whatever came to mind with only a rough idea of what I wanted to say. Is more or less a clusterfuck but I did manage to say some things I had on the brain. High chance there's grammar or spelling mistakes in here I didn't catch on my proofread, so sorry for that. Good night 👋 and read da damn comic.

say, for the sake of argument, that a young girl stands in a slaughter house. though she is thirteen years old, and has already committed dozens of gristly murders, it is only today that she will be given a NAME!

ahh thank you!! it means a lot <:)

as for the tipss, im gonna say what i said innn maybe the 2-3 other asks about advice on art and stuff and tell you that im not good at all at giving tips lol. but! i do know a bit on my own process of making my stuff at least.

for both i say to follow an archetype or a personality type and follow that up with aspects and pieces of the character that fit into said archetype but making them distinct. like how rose was brooding, john was nerdy, and so on and so on. stylewise i always simplify things a lot though, trying to keep things that can be seem as memorable. (this is the part where im runnining out of things to say, bear with me)

one way i do make distinctions between the two was that trolls are a LOT more exaggerated than humans. you can see on how vriska is supposed to be a stereotypical mean girl, but taken to the level where shes HURTING hurting people, and even killing trolls to feed off her lusus, and how terezi is a literal embodiment of blind justice. so from personality to design theres always something you could try to make stand out a bit more (say, a cowardly troll turned into a complete paranoid shut-in) while still keeping those first points from the first paragraph about sticking to a theme and prioritizing key aspects about your character

and one more thing that i might be able to add is to just, experiment a lot? there are boundaries to stuff of course, and its great to be reminded of those and on how you can work your magic within them to make something really good that, without them, would kind of fall flat. but i moreso mean in the sense of like, a lot of "weird" stuff people like to stick to a lot, at least when making trolls in specific. your goldblood doesnt need psiionics, your purpleblood doesnt need to be a juggalo. but other characters can! or even have something completely different. and its fun to think of stuff like that and how you can work it out.

actually, last thing, receiving critiques on stuff is also really, really good, specially when you talk to people that know their stuff. on the MSPFA server there is a channel for getting the hussie style (that includes designing fankids and fantrolls) just right and i comment on that area from time to time, giving personal advice that can maybe work a bit better than just general stuff like this. if youre not in there (or theres someone else reading this who isnt there) youre always free to join and ask for critique on your stuff there!

Another Object Comic Blog 2

Back at it again with another name change! This one’s probably the last one for a bit though.

A good amount of progress has been made on the idea of the comic since my last post in March. That is, I hunkered down with some buds and actually made a kind of rigid outline of how I want the plot to be structured. A good amount of ideas were leftovers from Exclusion Delusion but more fleshed out with a cleaner idea for a possible ending in mind, which makes me happy! Every time I’ve taken a stab at a comic like this I usually drop the idea because I don’t know how I’d end it, so having that in mind has been reassuring.

Here’s a mostly redacted look at the outline of the story, mostly for the sake of keeping things a surprise! Who doesn’t like a good surprise? I will leave a synopsis of the beginning of the story though, so here! Objects of many different locations live on a planet with only them and are all aware of/ friends with each other. Ornament is the main character of the story, who on their (TBD)th birthday travel around the world in search of artifacts warning of an impending doom. After a year, the end of the world takes the form of a competition in which each challenge takes place on a different planet.

Unlike the plot, the biggest point of contention has been the actual characters to appear in the comic! Truth is, there’s been dozens of characters that have had the possibility of appearing in the comic. Some as main characters, and others as more comic relief side characters. Sizing down the original fifty plus characters has been no easy task, and I’ve joined a bunch of calls with some buds trying to decide which characters should stay or go has been a struggle. I’ll probably come to this decision on my own since these are my characters and only my most cherished of children will make it in..

The spreadsheet above was originally where I listed out all of my ocs and we went through them all and talked about how which characters could act and little quirks they could have. I’d be a liar if I said it didn’t help give me an idea on the characters I FOR SURE wanted in.

Ornament’s a character I’ve wanted in the comic since day one, they’re GUARUNTEED to be a main character. I used them in this enviornment as a test of how I’d draw backgrounds in the comic.

As another small experiment, I tried to go back to my last comic Sunburn and redraw it with the skills I have now in a style I might’ve liked back then, I’m pretty happy with how it came out!

Below is another character with a similar style. She’s also guaranteed for the comic, her name’s Inkwell!

I’ve also been messing around with a potential style for the comic. It’s another one of those things that I’ve been putting a lot of thought into, but at the end of the day I think I have a good idea for what I want to do.

My biggest inspirations for this comic have always been my favorite object shows (ONE, Battle for Dream Island Again) and their saturated colors and simple designs, and Homestuck and the many many MSPFAS out there (Vast Error, A Guy Gets Revenge). Drawing objects in this style consistently has been a bit of a struggle, but I’ve found myself gravitating towards big and round hands, and tiny lil’ feet.

I don’t know if I’ll lean as heavy with the gradients and blurs though, since they’ve given me mixed results. I think I like the look of them when minimally used so I’ll probably stick to that.

Another art related thing I heavily debated on using was sprites. At first, I wanted to completely opt out of using any sprites for the sake of simplicity, but with the help of some really nice people I not only re-sprited old characters, but decided that I might go with this sprite style for the new characters. They’re so silly that it’s been hard for me to say no!

Another thing I want to note before ending this post is that just like all of my other comics, I do not mean for this to be the job of a crew where I’m only a writer.

This is my comic, and something I’ve wanted to make. Chances are that just like Sunburn, I’ll be writing a large part of the comic and drawing a large chunk of the panels. Meteor trip headcanons? man i dunno. rose and vriska stumbling upon each other alone at one point and its really awkward at first because theyve never really talked and rose probably dislikes vriska from the things kanaya has said about her, but she is very intriguing isn't she? they get to talking, as light players do, and vriska thinks rose is super cool, maybe she even says "You know what, Lalonde? You're actually pretty alright." and rose... hmm... rose wants to keep her distance, karkat and kanaya have both told her so many accounts of vriska being just straight up fucking evil. rose would probably suspicious of her trying to befriend her. i don't know that's all i've got idk what happens next.
