on the subject of boe it's bizarre when people act like blood of eden being potentially descended from trillionaires has some relation to the structure of their current society. like that was ten thousand years ago. if your mesopotamian ancestor patented domesticating cows and was absolutely swimming in copper that has literally no bearing on your life today

to the people who want to have a conversation about john's being an indigenous man, a māori man, i would like to remind you that the first time we see māori spoke onscreen it goes as follows.
Tumblr media
one person in this room is interested in the cultures and languages of the world that came before, to the point her name and mission in life are respectively a human chain reaching back ten thousand years and justice for the destroyed earth: a mission that allowed her to persist beyond death, which brings her to being in control of cytherea the first's corpse. the other is john, who is disinterested in her idea of justice for them and speaks over her multiple times.
Tumblr media
that human chain, her name? he doesn't respect it just as he doesn't respect her. this conversation is beneath him and so is her full name. he is annoyed into reciting it.
Tumblr media
māori is spoken by john here, and it is spoken with contempt for the woman who wishes to avenge earth and whose name preserved a part of the language that he helped annihilate, along with aotearoa and all other māori people.
the first time māori is spoken in the series it is spoken by an indigenous man—who received an extensive colonial scholarship, who was alienated from his culture and sought respect and recognition in predominantly white academia, who was burned time and time again by the systems of oppression that formed the basis for climate change and the earth's abandonment by the trillionaires—who speaks it with a tone of condescension and a complete lack of gravitas because it is irrelevant to him. genuinely sad, bordering on very funny.
the second instance of māori is when he renames gideon the transliteration of her name into māori. she does not identify with it and she likely does not know its significance.
Tumblr media
she is also a corpse: killed indirectly by cytherea the first, who presented a threat to harrow's life that could only be dealt with via her ascension to lyctorhood via gideon's death, who groomed gideon into accepting her role as cavalier primary to harrowhark nonagesimus.
killed by one of the emperor undying's fists and gestures, killed by the ideals of cavaliership which he societally instituted, killed due to cytherea the first's disillusionment with him leading her to go on a killing spree at canaan house in order to gain his attention, killed due to john and john's actions and the systems of the society he created.
the only time we see john use the māori language in a way that isn't dripping for contempt is when he renames his daughter's corpse, wherein he clarifies that she is prince kiriona gaia, heir to the emperor divine and the emperor's only daughter, the emperor's construct.
Tumblr media
construct, like the skeletons that farm leeks on the ninth. she is not entitled to resurrection: she is to ownership, to being the ninth's chattel in life and her father's construct in death. he uses the language to declare her his.
gideon is the name of his saint, his oldest friend, spoken by the ghost of the woman that birthed her, to the nuns of her house—kiriona is john declaring a corpse his heir, and his daughter his construct.
there is a conversation i would love to have about john's indigeneity: it's the one where we acknowledge that after wakes death he has preserved the legacy of the māori language by using it to name his daughter, a māori woman killed by his society and the consequences of his actions, something she doesn't feel any connection to.
john is an indigenous man, a māori man, who was born into a land settled by colonisers who rendered it rife with systems of oppression that alienated him from his culture, and led him to fall back on the same systems of oppression when he founded the nine houses. indigeneity describes a relation to colonisation and settler capital, primarily in the form of dispossession; when john declared kiriona his, did he do so as an indigenous man or as the emperor of an empire that ships populations between planets like cattle?

Beakley: I suppose you are wondering why I called you here tonight.
Lena: If it was to poison me then you should've picked something other than sad English tea to put it in
Beakley: ... I wish to understand your intentions towards my granddaughter.
Lena: Well I can 100% promise never to serve her THIS stuff
Beakley: Webby enjoys my tea. It is a family favorite.
Lena: Figures
Beakley: Why are you inviting her out after dark?
Lena: See, I was gonna ask her to the movies, buy popcorn, catch the newest horror flick- but now I'm thinking, maaaybe she's got enough of that in her home life. You guys live with a trillionaire. How many times have you used this tea bag?
Beakley: You are failing to impress me.
Lena: Nice. Didn't even know I was trying
Beakley: Drink your tea and have a biscuit. I will allow movie night IF it is an educational film AND both I and the boys are present.
Lena: Ever thought about using honey? Mint?? Sugar of any kind????
Beakley: No.
Lena: Guess all the sweetness in this house just comes from Webby, huh.
Beakley: She could crush you like a teacup.
Lena: I know. Blegh. Wish she'd go ahead and crush my teacup...
Webby: HIIIIIIII-YAAH!!!!
Lena: .... wow. Now I wish I had a million dollars.
Beakley: Webby.
Webby: Oh Granny hi! I wasn't spying from the vents! I just fell completely normally from the ceiling and accidently landed on Lena's cup!!
Beakley: You accidentally landed on it... with your... fist.
Lena: Got that punchline all teed up, huh Pink.
Webby: HA HA HA, WHAT FUNNY WORD PLAY, I'M INVOKING MY RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT!
Lena: My hero.
Beakley: I would be foreseeing disaster in the tea leaves of this friendship, if I could be bothered to read them. And if they were not. Well. Everywhere.

John Gaius is less interesting to me as someone who is just a shallowly awful person, and vastly, infinitely more interesting to me as an intensely human person with the powers of a god and that has fucked him up. The things he does to his friends are done out of grief, because he doesn’t want them to be gone, it’s out of the loss of those he loved that he brings them back, that there’s almost something numb about him until the depression or the rage or the sorrow hits, because like he’s Jod, he didn’t get to where he was by being able to die, and that’s terrifying for others, but I can’t help thinking that it’s really fucked him up, too, because all that power, it’s just there, it’s in him all the time, and when someone betrays you and you have the power and invulnerability of a god and you’re a hot goddamned mess because you’re still just a person who has lived through so much pain and grief and loss, you react like a human and you reform yourself out of your own atoms and permanently explode people and go, right then, either you’re loyal or you die, because you’re fucking pissed, and you don’t want to fucking deal with it anymore, because you don’t have to, you’re God, you have the power to say, no, this stops here, loyalty or die, make your fucking choice now, instead of continuing to walk that tightrope of lying to your friends but trying to make it up to them and feeling guilty but also feeling angry, all while you’re so fucking tired. But then you feel more guilt about it, because you’re a person and you’re not trying to be a dictator, you’re trying to make the galaxy better, you’re trying lighten the mood, because it’s ten thousand fucking years and if you don’t embrace your love of puns being hilarious, then everything’s going to be so fucking boring, and you’re still angry at the trillionaires.   You stop time and tell everyone to stop attacking each other because you’re so fucking tired and just don’t want to deal with it anymore.  You’re so fucking careful, even around your friends, not to bleed around them because you know what that can lead to. I feel like John is a character who isn’t evil so much as every step is an understandable one he made, each one is a very human reaction when you have the context of everything that happened before, and then layer a whole lot of depression and guilt and anger on top of all those decisions. Is he doing terrible things?  Yeah, and he’s fucking terrifying to be around, he tries so hard to be affable and gentle, but he has so much power and he’s Just A Fucking Guy, a guy who wanted to save the world and started out from a place that so many of us have started out from, each step he took to where he got and why he lied are understandable ones, the weight inside him one that I can empathize with, I too am not always the kindest when I’m depressed, I too am not always one to make the best decisions when I feel torn between wanting to help people vs how to actually get there, like if I was face to face with a real chance to save the world, wouldn’t I do some shady things to make sure it got done, because the world hung in the balance?  Wouldn’t I fall into depression when weighed down by all that responsibility to do something when I had the power/ability to do it?  Where is the single point at which he should have said no and turned back, given all that had come before? I don’t see John Gaius as a character who set out to become Necrolord Prime, that that was the intended arc, so much as he kept making one decision after another, decisions that come from a place of very human nature, and eventually we’re here, with the weight of all those decisions behind him and no one single place that really was a hard turning point.  And also a whole lot of depression. Anyway, he’s my poor little meow meow and I hope he’s dictator of the universe for life because it’s very funny and also gives me feelings.

Wrote some information about my world; i'll add it to my carrd eventually so don't worry about losing this post. Under readmore because it's long and also not everyone may care
My world, AKA DLF ("Dazx Leotre Flaurdea") is an alternate universe consisting of two planets inhabited by humans: Earth and DLF. The two planets were theorized to be connected, and the most common non-religious theory for the formation of this universe is a 'big bang' event just like on Earth. People on DLF and people on Earth exist independently of each other today but share similar DNA. DLF and Earth are not in the same galaxy and both orbit a separate star ("sun"). I spectate this universe while semi-present in what you call objective reality. Sometimes people in my world will walk around, talk, and interact with the area I'm currently in, and other times they will be in a separate location. DLF contacted Earth gradually over a decade to avoid provoking fear and conflict. Technology is highly advanced on DLF and this alternate universe in general. Inter-planetary travel is maintained by and was revolutionized by a company in the Flaurdean Republic (country on DLF) known as "WL".
While I primarily talk about Flaurdea on my blog, this is only because it's the country I spectate most often. Flaurdea is a country, not a planet or galaxy. And just like on Earth, every country is unique.
People on DLF age gradually but inconsistently. I start seeing a person from my world a different way when they've aged. That's how I identify the aging, not birthdays. They tend to age when I do as well.
I primarily spectate the family of Flash Wendel, founder of WL and arguably de-facto president of Flaurdea. Most often I spectate his daughter Jiji as she is most talkative and active. If she's in a group of people, she'll make sure the focus remains on her. She is most commonly hanging out in whatever area I'm in whenever a person in this world isn't there. For example, when I'm at work, she's often leaning against something acting annoyed and uncomfortable. Understandable--she is the daughter of a trillionaire...why does she keep hanging out in a grocery store? And when I'm outside at work she's most commonly with a group of friends at a table in the grass some people eat at...most commonly Jiji and crew, though. The actions of people in my world also depend on my physical state. They are more idle when I am and almost non-moving when I lay in bed at night. No, I do not have dreams about my world, but since it's an alternate universe that isn't surprising.
I don't know how I came to spectate this universe, but Flash has been a part of my life for a long time, as well as a boy he was close with, Silo, who unfortunately died while working on a project for WL. I really spent that day curled up on the floor crying. Sometimes I'm scared Flash will die, but luckily this hasn't happened. He's gotten injured, though! One time he was shot and one of my friends in this world pointed out the injury was not life-threatening. She follows me on here...thank you for everything.
This is still a very oversimplified writeup of my world but it's overwhelming to talk about because there's just so much to discuss. If you go in the tag 'my world' on my blog you can find occasional updates and information though. I post about it quite often and will answer asks about it as long as they're asked in good faith or don't require me to share details of the lives of people in my world that are too personal to share to thousands of people on tumblr.
Asks about my world I will just delete:
- Mocking my world or people in it
- Armchair diagnosing me
- Asking questions that are way too vague (for example, "what political system is your world"--DLF is an entire planet made up of different countries! be specific!)
- Making ANY mental health related assumptions about my world or asking questions related to that
- Calling me delusional or saying "take your meds" (i've been on so many antipsychotics I now have neurological damage, so yes, I no longer fucking take them. I live at home and i'm safe. My mom and stepdad talk about my world with me regularly. Die mad about it)

The nerve of gang nam soon, the pampered kid with FOUR parents who would do anything in their power to provide for her, who has not ONCE in her existence felt an ounce of loneliness, who's trillionaire mother would rip the world inside out for her, who discovers capitalism and has the realisation that the world isn't cotton candy and bubbles but actually evil for the FIRST time when she's 22 yrs old; the nerve THE NERVE of that girl to chastise Ryu Sio, an orphan abandoned by the world, who was used and abused by the mafia, forced to murder people at 6 yrs of age, used like a puppet, torn between a war inside him, who not once in his life received the chance to be human.
Hwang geum ju is a filthy hypocrite with her "people can change if they're given a second chance", where was your magnanimous-forgiving-second-chance giving spirit when you were dealing with someone being forced by one of the most powerful mafias in the world to distribute drugs? As for Gang nam soon, I've never hated a main character as much as I hated her. How could you turn around after someone tells you they've been abused their entire life, trusted no one, and were forced to do terrible things to survive, and call them a bastard? Does nam soon not have an ounce of empathy in her hypocrite body? The parallels between Nam soon eating lunch in a villa with her two mothers and relatives who love her more than anything else in the world and the scenes where Sio sat alone in the place where his orphanage stood? And knowing that despite being abandoned by his parents which resulted in him being abused for years he understood that his biological parents were probably not in a position to provide for him and tracked them down and provided for them? And all this for the drama writers to just include a scene where the main characters on their romantic stroll to muse once about how different ryu Sio would have turned out if the world had shown him an OUNCE OF KINDNESS? Like you guys are seriously telling me that this thought did not occur ONCE in gang nam soon, daughter of philanthropist and believer of goodness of people Hwang geum ju, that this man opening up to you about his traumatic childhood and life and the fact that he does not want to die being controlled by an evil mafia could possibly be a better human if he recieved the chance? This drama could have explored a complex relationship between Sio and Nam soon, where she recognised that he was really a victim of society's evils, Hwang geum ju could have helped Sio escape the clutches of the mafia and they could have taken down this organisation together, but no instead the writers decided to make a drama chock full of loopholes, cringe dialogue, predictable and boring plot "twists", a painfully one dimensional male lead, and a forced romantic relationship between the main characters who had ZERO chemistry. From a kdrama fan who LOVED strong woman do bong soon and only and only started this drama because of bongbong and minmin's 5 minute cameo, I'm beyond disappointed. It ruined my year ending (almost)

You know what I liked about Nona the Ninth, as a book? It avoided a pitfall common to SFF: sequel escalation, the need for everything to get bigger in each book — the stakes, the villains, the magic/science, the action, etc. It can all get extremely abstract, removed from the very tangible emotions of the story's beginning.
The Locked Tomb does have sequel escalation, on the surface. The stakes go from a handful of powerful people seeking necromantic secrets and solving murders, to fighting the revenant of a whole planet, to now, a myriad-long, universe-spanning fight between God and a line of trillionaires, with existential repercussions to everyone in existence.
But while this plot escalates, the narrative focusses on Nona, an almost indestructible being with immense power, at the heart of the life and death of the universe... living in, essentially, a refugee city, going to school, meeting friends, loving her family, trying to quite literally figure out who she is.
And she doesn't really understand most of the details of the larger narrative (honestly, who does lol). All she understands is the emotional heart of the story — the people that are hurting, the people that love each other, the fear and pain of losing yourself and becoming something new, loved ones separated by moments or galaxies or death, the tragedy of war and the ways that survivors learn to keep living. She brings it back to those emotions, just as she brings the plot down to something more concrete.
Even as the plot escalates, Nona's point of view keeps it rooted. When Camilla and Pash fight a classroom full of Blood of Eden, Nona is mostly hiding in a boiler room, trying to comfort a friend. She faces Ianthe not because it could save the planet, but because her family needs her. Amid a city on the verge of war, one of the highest-tension moments is her asking two teenage ex-friends for help. When she's on the verge of giving up, she stays because she has a dog to protect.
And it's not just Nona who brings things back down to earth (heh) — almost every character gets a serious power downgrade at the start of Nona the Ninth. Harrow is locked inside herself. Ianthe is restricted to Naberius's body for most of the book. Palamedes can only live for minutes at a time, and then he can't do necromancy. Camilla can't use her swords until late in the book. Pyrrha is in her necromancer's body, unable to do necromancy and mostly working a dayjob instead of fighting. Gideon has depression. And John, absent for the present-day narrative, is shown at the beginning of his story, at his least powerful, stripped of all godliness.
It's just very good! Both Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth also already gave us huge mindblowing fight scenes and genius characters with worldbending powers — so instead of escalating that, Muir really dug deep into the core (imo) of the story: the multifaceted characters and their complex, contradictory emotions. Loss, anger, and fear mixed with love, loyalty, and kindness. That's what Nona's all about.

Vast: Joy Wang/Jobu Tupaki (Everything Everywhere All At Once) "Jobu is able to comprehend the entire scale of humanity in every corner of the multiverse, and it's all… Meaningless. You see when you put literally everything on a bagel when you're bored one day - every report card, every breed of dog, every ad on Craigslist, every grain of salt or seed - it collapses in on itself and you realize… We are all so small and insignificant that nothing we do matters. And when nothing matters, all of the pain and guilt you feel at your life going nowhere just goes away. It's sucked into a bagel.
A cult is formed around this bagel - all the other people that Jobu has shown the truth to - but what she really wants is her mother to understand how empty she really feels."
Extinction: John Gaius (The Locked Tomb) "Originally part of a team of scientists tasked with saving humanity from climate change, John was gifted strange necromantic powers by earth itself. He proceeded to use these powers to essentially start a cult. He attempts to convince various nations and companies to follow his plans for how to save the planet, but nothing works and eventually the whole thing has gone to such shit that John NUKES THE EARTH AND EVERY HUMAN STILL ON IT. He can feel them all die and uses their power to fuel himself, spending the next ten thousand years chasing after the trillionaires who escaped the planet, blaming them for the destruction of humanity. He is so afraid of Extinction that he literally causes the mass Extinction of every living thing on earth. Oh also he takes the dead, resurrected soul of planet earth and traps it in a barbie doll, and what is more Extinction than the soul of our planet trapped in plastic?"

Predicting the World's First Trillionaires
As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, it's challenging to definitively predict who will become the world's first trillionaire. The financial status of individuals can change rapidly due to various factors such as investments, business ventures, stock market fluctuations, and more. However, some of the well-known candidates who were often speculated to have the potential to reach trillionaire status included technology magnates like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and other highly successful entrepreneurs in the tech industry. Please note that circumstances and rankings can change, and it's best to refer to the latest financial news and reports for the most up-to-date information on this topic.
