Ancient Gold Coin Hoard Found Under Kitchen Floorboards in Britain

A house refurbishment in northern England has uncovered a trove of gold coins, which could be worth up to £250,000 ($290,000) at auction next month.

The discovery is one of the biggest hoards of 18th century English gold coins ever uncovered in Britain, according to auction house Spink & Son in a press release.

While renovating their kitchen in July 2019, residents unearthed a salt-glazed earthenware cup burrowed underneath the concrete and floorboards of their home in Ellerby, North Yorkshire.

The cup, described as being no larger than a soft-drink can, contained more than 260 gold coins dating from 1610 to 1727. The stash of coins has an estimated value of £100,000 ($116,00) in today's spending power, auctioneers said.

Gregory Edmund, an auctioneer with Spink & Son, said the remarkable trove is unlike any find in British archaeology or like any coin auction in living memory.

"It is a wonderful and truly unexpected discovery from so unassuming a find location," Edmund said in the press release.

"This find of over 260 coins is also one of the largest on archaeological record from Britain, and certainly for the 18th century period," he added.

"The coins almost certainly belonged to the Fernley-Maisters, Joseph and Sarah who married in 1694," reads the press release.

According to Spink & Son, the Maisters were an influential mercantile family from the 16th century to the 18th century. They traded iron ore, timber and coal from the Baltic states and several generations took up posts as lawmakers in the early 1700s.

Their family line dwindled soon after the couple died, which is presumably why the coins were never retrieved, the auction house added.

Meanwhile, Edmund said the findings reflect the £50 and £100 coins that were used at the time.

"Joseph and Sarah clearly distrusted the newly-formed Bank of England, the 'banknote' and even the gold coinage of their day because they (chose) to hold onto so many coins dating to the English Civil War and beforehand," he added.

"Why they never recovered the coins when they were really easy to find just beneath original 18th century floorboards is an even bigger mystery, but it is one hell of a piggy bank."

I love your 'Krang Will Rise post'! How secure do you think is the Prison Dimension?

Oh hi, another ask. Im glad people are taking a liking to my post. It makes me very happy.

Blatant terms: probably the most secure prison ever. It was designed to hold the worlds most powerful destructive beings. The Krang were inside with all their technology and species and still couldn’t find a way out so much that almost all of them died in there. They were in there for literally one thousand years, and they couldn’t find one single way out.

I do like to believe the prison dimension wasn’t just accessed, like it didn’t previously exist before those mystic warriors beat the krang the first time. I think they designed it for the purpose of holding the krang. Credit to their power for literally creating a dimension to hold an advanced alien species in.

But since something can’t come from nothing, I think the key they made had a deep connection to the dimension as a sort of access point, if not being the dimension itself. Maybe if April and Splinter had found a way to break the key it would have collided the dimensions, or caused a black hole by the sheer power it possesses.

Considering its massive amounts of mystic energy, Mikey being able to open a portal into it without the use of a key may emphasis the absolute crazy level of natural power he has. Or it’s possible, they (being the Hamato) have a mystic connection to the mystic users who created the key. Given the color matching the four seemed to have resembling our lovable turtles, this may have already been implied in the show.

I mean Karai had to get her incredible mystics from somewhere, and she never explains where she got it from just that she awakened it. Since Shredder himself doesn’t really have mystics, since he’s always getting other peoples, I imagine she got these abilities for her mothers side. Karai and Oroku have different surnames, so it’s possible the Hamato family name Karai inherited was from her mother. Daughter of one of the mystic warriors.

A lot of books are available there as ebooks and audiobooks #Libraries need to be treasured #My library website has a catalogue of every library book in the country and it's location/status #wikibooks has some free books that i haven't tried out yet but will #and there's loads more i either haven't included here off the top of my head or haven't discovered yet!#the internet is not just for escapism #it's a tool and a place for sharing knowledge #btw i meant to say 100 articles for jstor not 94 (i meant to click 99 but then realised it's actually 100 i think) (either way it's a lot!!)

So, I’ve embarked on a little project when I got sucked into a specific shopping site by a coworker. When I discovered I could buy literally anything as a miniature, a little dream bubbled up from my subconscious wherein I just had to have a little chest of treasure. I’ve always loved cut and polished gemstones ever since playing Forbidden Bridge growing up in the 90’s. Those little red plastic rubies always fascinated me.

So when I found all the components to build my own little treasure chest, I couldn’t stop myself. Little by little, I’ve been acquiring a small pile of gemstones and gold/silver pieces over the course of a month or so. They’re not truly real gemstones, of course, nor are the gold and silver pieces actually precious metals - simply because I don’t make nearly enough to make that a reality. But I did try to make sure the gemstones were actually a mineral aside from glass, and the gold and silver are actually bright metals with weight instead of plastic.

Figured I’d share what I’d managed to collect, as I love showing off what I managed to do to people who appreciate it.

This is the treasure chest itself, just something that came in a pack of three off Amazon. It’s wood (of some light variety, maybe balsam) and the clasp is metal.

My first attempt at arranging the pieces. The gold coins are a little too big, but they only come in one size. I only have the sapphire (10 pieces) and rubies (10 as well) in here, with only two tiny emeralds. I didn’t read the listing well, so the size was wrong and I didn’t realize it was for only one piece each instead of a pack of five.

These are the diamonds I went with, fairly sparkly. Again, not “real” diamonds! I wouldn’t want real ones anyway, as moissanite comes right up close to diamonds on the hardness, clarity, and grading scales. Not to mention, I have zero desire to support De Beers or any other diamond company for the disgusting way they’ve conducted themselves for the past hundred years and how they continue to artificially bump the price of a worthless commodity and manipulate people into thinking that the only worthy gemstone is one pulled from their massive, air conditioned warehouse. (End rant, sorry)

Here’s my second attempt at arranging the treasure, I used the coins as filler on the bottom with a couple on top, then sprinkled the gemstones with the diamonds among the gold bars. I figured video would be best to show the actual sparkle of everything!

My third attempt at organizing! This is after receiving the peach-colored gems, all new emeralds, and gold and silver Chinese ingots (sycee, yuanbao). The coins are mostly on the bottom, I took out part of the gold bars and added the ingots, emeralds, peach gems, and two gold coins on top. It’s hefty for a small chest!
