I’m doing TDF (Tour de Fleece) this year. My goals are tiny; simply finishing off singles for project spins with anything else, being that plying/additional spins, being an added bonus.
Whilst holidaying in the hinterland last week, I completed one of my goals of finishing off the last single for my Easter Show competition yarn, an extremely soft alpaca blend. Please enjoy my spinning.

tour de fleece 2023 day two: finished the rolags, letting the single rest, will chain-ply tomorrow to maintain the 🌈, unless I wake up in the mood to spin a neutral single and make a two-ply. 😁

im gonna try to do tour de fleece this year, even though i’ll also be spending the month recovering from top surgery (yaaay)
but i suppose spinning is something to do, and i don’t have to lift my arms much…
still probably wont spin for most of the first week but that just means i should start early to make up for it!
i am very glad my pocket wheel is 6 pounds, and therefore under the ten pound weight limit i’ll have after surgery
here is a picture of my beautiful cherry baby for your viewing pleasure

tdf update 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID in ALT]
ladies, gentlemen, and those if us who know better; we have sock yarn!
230 grams of it to be exact, spun from 100% wool from the old norwegian short tail landrace sheep wich i know to be very durable and suited for sock yarn due to the long guard hairs

Tour de Fleece, Day 2
I'm not nearly done for the day, but I figured I'd shift my updates to the afternoon for the nicer photos. So!
First of all, spinning wheel's looking ~*magical*~:
Tumblr media
I'm also making pretty good progress on the spin itself (and again, I've barely even started for today):
Tumblr media
And the spindle project is also making pretty steady progress!

That's 4 ounces of fiber spun. I have 2 ounces more to go. I can fit it all on there, right? It'll fit, surely.
I really didn't want to split the fiber between bobbins, but I think it's inevitable at this point if I want to maintain the color pattern. And I do. I love the progression in the colors! We shall see. It's too late at night to make decisions right now.

I don't have a ball winder and I've only got two bobbins. What's a spinner to do?
DIY ball winder, of course.

TDF days 13 and 14
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finished the second bobbin last night, plied it just now. I think I might spin the other colors I've dyed as a break, or maybe switch to something else for a bit--I like this yarn, I've just learned that when my tdf project is something inherently slow it is not very enjoyable for me.

Porch spinning an unknown rainbow rolag gradient from stash this morning. Kromski Fantasia wheel, 10:1 whorl but hard uptake so not that fine of a single.
will probably dig around ye olde fibrenacci account on the tweets to figure out what it is. 🙃

plans for tdf '23
Y'ALL. it's time. it's an excuse to spin more. it's tour de fleece.
Tumblr media
spinning!me is super disorganized -- i only own one (1) spinning tool (a drop spindle) -- so i'm fully prepared for a we'll-burn-that-bridge-when-we-get-to-it kind of tdf. that's not stopping me from having Plans (TM), though!
in the interest of not ruining everyone's feeds, i'm going to keep yelling below the cut.
(also, if you don't want my hopefully-daily updates on spinning, i'll be tagging everything with #tour de fleece and #tour de fleece 2023 if you want to block)
in general, i want to spin and post progress every day. i've attempted to do daily progress things on instagram, but i always chicken out because of the Aesthetics (TM). here on the hellsite i can only hope that i will not be such a terrible pedant about lighting.
PROJECT 1: MERINO/SILK FRACTAL 3-PLY
Tumblr media
first off is finishing what's on my spindle right now. i've got about 1/3 of a ply left to go on a fingering-weight fractal 3-ply spin in merino/silk (dyed by emily c gillies for luck of the draw december 2022). i've been working on this for WAYY too long; i started spinning it in, uhh, february.
here's the breakdown of the milestones i want to hit:
07/01: finish spinning the ply
07/02: wind a plying ball and start plying
07/04: finish plying
PROJECT 2: PERUVIAN WOOL 3-PLY
Tumblr media
next up is another wip... kind of. i'm working on a sweater quantity of handspun -- i have one skein finished, but the rest of it has been on hold while the merino/silk takes up the spindle.
this yarn is a dk-weight 3-ply in a heathered fiber (knit picks wool of the andes roving in indigo heather). i have some leftovers on two of my makeshift bobbins from my first skein, so i'm hoping i can just slide the cops back onto my spindle and connect new fiber.
i have 800 g of the fiber, and will probably need at least 700 g for the sweater project, so... i think this should probably take the rest of the month (and beyond).
nonetheless...
PROJECT 3: DORSET WOOL CHAIN PLY
Tumblr media
i have two GORGEOUS 100 g braids of dorset (again from emily c gillies' luck of the draw, this time for june 2023). there's an orange/pink/purple/blue gradient, and there's a coordinating pastel green/blue/purple/brown tonal.
i want to spin both up into lace/fingering-weight yarns to combine in a knitted project. to preserve the gradient, that'll get chain-plied, and i think i'll do the same on the tonal just for consistency (and because how does anyone split braids in 3???)
~~~
and i'm pretty sure there will be absolutely no time for anything else, so. that's a wrap for my @a-tour-de-fleece plans!
TdF day 15
Finished the first braid of the Greenwood Fiberworks BFL and started the second. I've doubled the roving back on itself to get longer color repeats for this one...fiddly but seems to be working so far.
The brown/grey is also BFL, from Three Waters Farm. Spun earlier this month but I under-plied it, so I ran it through the wheel again today...and now it's over-plied. Haven't decided whether I want to try to fix it or just soak it into submission.
it's taken...a bit...but i finally got around to washing some of my tour de fleece spinning!
specifically, i washed this, the bad plying choices yarn. the goal was a sock yarn, and pleasingly, that's what i got.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
rather less pleasingly, i forgot that handspun is denser than commercial yarns of the same weight, so i didn't pause to ask myself if i was going to make enough sock yarn to make socks. which i didn't--i might be able to eke out ankle socks, but I'll have to think on that a little.
anyhow, it's about 90 grams of romney, has four plies, and spun up to about 200 metres at ~23 wpi. as a point of comparison, the green yarn that's tying the skein is a commercial sock yarn with two plies.
i'm happy with how this turned out, but wish i'd made more of it. it's an ongoing problem for me--i always think that a hundred-ish grams of fibre will be enough for things, and it never is. someday i'm going to internalise this lesson, but not, apparently, today.
