📖 Not Good For Maidens by Tori Bovalino 📖 If you are a fall and Halloween lover like me this book definitely fits the vibe! A retelling of the Goblin’s Market that brings the spooky and creepy feels. I adored the focus on the family of witches and the secrets they keep. Tons of queer rep throughout the story with a sapphic enemies to lovers relationship! The dark seedy world of the goblin market was definitely intriguing. I did struggle with some of the character building and style of the writing. We follow two timelines the present and the past and jump around a little bit. I did enjoy the storyline for the past a lot more, following May and her romance. You know that "thing" you read in high school English class that made you go, "I like that, but it can't possibly have any impact on my future life." That thing? For me it was The Goblin Market. I had a great English teacher in HS that really pushed me, found me interesting and challenging books and works to focus on, probably so I'd stop bugging him so much during class. Ink was not forever.” ✨👹✨👹✨ The Devil Makes Three by Tori Bovalino is a young adult dark academia horror thriller that I’ve wanted to read for quite a while, and I’m glad I finally did! Following Tess and Eliot as they accidentally set the devil free from his binding, this book was dark, atmospheric and twisty, which made it hard to put down. I was a huge fan of the school/library setting, which just added to the atmosphere of the novel. I have to admit that I wasn’t all that invested in either of the characters, but I found Eliot’s backstory incredibly interesting, especially as he was involved with magic. I found that the relationship between them was a little bit unrealistic, especially as it was so rocky for the majority of the novel. That being said, I think they balanced one another out while challenging each other, which is always a fascinating combination. Beautifully written in a way that it both lyrical and captivating, this book had all of the dark academia vibes. Bovalibo managed to capture both the beauty and wonder alongside the horror and fear. We both agreed that this was a hard one to classify - it's like a literary thriller YA, I guess? I have SO MANY books I want to read this fall, and I started with the @illumicrate edition of The Devil Makes Three 😈 - I'm about 50% done with it and I am LOVING IT so much! Tess is your average girl just trying to survive private high school, working 2 jobs (one in a library!), and being a cello protégée. Eliot is your average boy, forced go to to private high school his father is headmaster of, forced to leave his sick mother in England, and oh yeah, he has magic. This book gives me college vibes rather than high school and I love that it feels on the older end of "young adult" so to speak. When Eliot needs a forbidden magical book in the library only Tess can access (she doesn't believe in magic, btw), he gets her help and together they journey to the basement, only to find something they didn't expect...and accidentally release the devil. I love the way the devil is seamlessly incorporated into this book and the world and its such spooky vibes - I recommend reading this at night for maximum horror effect!. I was super interested in this book premise, unfortunately it did’t hit as well with me as I would have liked. First off I listened to this one on audio, thanks to the publisher, and while it was well recorded, I had a hard time enjoying it because the male narrator was much older than the female. As this is a “highschool” aged book, it just didn’t sit well with me when he would talk about wanting to touch the girl, it came off more creepy in a bad way than being romantic sounding. It may be perfectly fine while physically reading, but in my experience with it, it was a miss. The pacing was also an issue for me, it seemed to drag out parts that could have been shortened and didn’t contain as much action as I would have hoped for, for a horror genre type book. It may be fine for a Young Reader, but for me it just wasn’t quite what I was hoping for after reading the premise. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My biggest are probably Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff and The Replacement Wife by Darby Kane. But I'm also excited for The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman, Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson, Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson, The Night She Dissapeared by Lisa Jewel and Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo.
