The Thumb Kiss Trope
Recently (like yesterday) I rewatched Wedding Plan and in ep 3 a thumb kiss was featured that was kind of glossed over by us all. Ever since then (like the past 12 hrs) I've been thinking about how I need more of this trope in my life. It's such a good trope and so under-used.
Sure we have different variations of a barrier kiss; My School President used that trope as a running gag up until the last ep. And we see people place their full hands between their lips. TinCan had a really cute kind of transfer kiss featuring Can's hand in Love By Chance, but nothing hits like the Thumb Kiss trope for me.
So why is the Thumb kiss such a vibe for me? Because it's the flimsiest of barriers to prevent a real kiss. It highlights the tension between the two characters, they both seem to be very interested, but it just isn't the right time for a real kiss yet. In my mind that thumb is a bookmark for the real kiss that is coming soon.
DON'T WORRY I HAVE EXAMPLES!
SoloGui from Oxygen the Series. We get their thumb kiss in ep 4. There are a couple reasons Solo does not kiss Gui in that moment; he didn't have permission, he didn't want to push Gui too much, and mainly because he was under the weather. But he couldn't just let the moment pass without a brief romantic interaction. At this point in the series, Solo is really just trying to gauge Gui's interest in him so he can figure out how to proceed.
Of course Gui responds like it's a real kiss, he kisses Solo's thumb too and then they both pull away. In the novel version, Gui is actually disappointed about Solo's thumb being there because he wanted it to be a real kiss (he's never kissed anyone before despite being a popular campus moon). BY THE WAY Nut Supanut from Pit Babe stars in Oxygen and it's a really cute, lowkey series with good communication. I highly recommend it, ALSO THE SIDE COUPLE IN THAT SERIES IS TOP TIER!
NueaToh from Secret Crush on You. Their thumb kiss happens in ep 2. It's not so secret that Toh is in love with P'Nuea, but we soon discover that Nuea is also kind of enamored with Toh. He goes out of his way to hire Toh as a photographer for his sister's birthday party (btw she's a fan of Toh's photography) and anyways, Toh and his bestie Jao are hanging out with Nuea and his friends and they play that good ole King's card game (you know the one! It's the only time we see cards in these series) and Nuea and Toh are dared to kiss.
We know Toh wants to and so does Nuea but Nuea doesn't want to turn his first kiss with his crush into a party game so he literally smirks at Toh and pushes his thumb between their lips. Nuea knows Toh likes him and he's sure Toh would be fine with their first kiss happening any kind of way, but Nuea wants to make sure Toh knows he's kissing him on purpose so he's going to wait.
ALSO half the cast of the Sign are in SCOY and I HIGHLY recommend the series to anyone who hasn't watched it, Billy is PHENOMENAL as Nuea. Saint produced SCOY as well and it's a good mix of cringe, spice, and pretty much all the characters are queer. I just hope you don't mind stalking as part of the plot (I can explain more if you're interested! I promise it's not that bad)
LomNuea from Wedding Plan. Sailom and Namnuea are vibing from Day 1 but Sailom and his fiancée Yiwa have contracted Nuea to plan their upcoming wedding. To Nuea, Sailom is going behind Yiwa's back to pursue him and he's having mixed feelings about that. Sailom is actually just a man in love with his wedding planner and trying to find the best way to explain a delicate situation without sounding selfish or manipulative.
Their thumb kiss happens in ep 3 and at this point Lom is trying his hardest to keep his intense feelings in check. He's parked outside of Nuea's apartment preparing to drop him off and he thinks Nuea is sleeping. He apologizes and places his thumb on Nuea's lips and kisses his thumb. When he pulls back Nuea is wide awake and Sailom declares that he's going to kiss him and they do kiss. Namnuea kisses him back.
Their situation is a little different because they have kissed already but it was a quick and playful kiss and Lom kissed him because he was trying to calm Nuea down (I can't explain it but it does work) and by ep 3 they are both very aware of the other's feelings. This is one of the moments where Namnuea gives in to his feelings for Sailom, which he immediately regrets.
One could argue that's what this particular scene visually represents. Sailom has a clear understanding of how he feels about Namnuea, which is why we can see him so clearly. Meanwhile Nuea is shrouded in darkness, he still needs some clarity.
I tried to go down my list of watched BLs to figure out if any other ones featured The Thumb Kiss and I couldn't find anymore which is TRAGIC. It's such a fun trope. I scream every time I see it and I wish it was featured more. I need more of this specific trope.

Only Friends Character Rankings Episode 7
Listen, I didn't know how badly I wanted Mew/Ray until there was a legit chance of Mew/Ray and now IT'S ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT. Another killer episode as all the shit gets laid bare, Nick and Sand cement their bond over being pathetic simps for men who do not love them, Top sits in the loser feeling and DOES NOT LIKE IT and...OH YEAH MEW AND RAY ARE DATING NOW I GUESS. Last week Top ran away with the audience poll as I learned the valuable lesson that y'all actually pay attention to the poll question and I should probably think about it a bit more...lol. Here's my rankings for this week
🔹1. Ray (1)
It’s never too late, Mew. I love you no matter what. It’s all up to you whether you want to open your heart to me.
I almost gave it to Mew because FUCKING EPIC but Ray actually got everything he ever wanted by the end of this episode: Mew has decided to give him a chance, even if it's as a rebound. And y'all, I am INTO IT. They're never gonna have sex, obvi, because Mew high key isn't interested and Ray is #1 simp so dumb obsessed he'll never push it, but I'm still enjoying the flavour. Besides, when Ray gets horny or needs actual affection, he'll just call Sand anyway...OOP. So yeah, Ray wins the week.
🔺2. Mew (3)
I stopped being a good guy. I got no shit from that. To deal with nasty people, I must be as nasty as them.
Wasn't it fascinating that when it was time to break bad Mew a) looked to Ray for style inspo, b) decided to let Ray sniff it one time and c) is leaning into the Ray Life? I wanna dissect Mew like a lab specimen. He's like 'I'm gonna be shitty too' and then just...becomes Ray. Then he Boston-style mansplains manipulates manwhores his way into possessing Boston's sex tape. And THEN in what has to be a 100% Mew move (because neither Ray nor Boston would EVER) threatens to out Boston to his dad, but then Uno reverses it like OF COURSE I WOULD NEVER DO THAT BECAUSE I'M BETTER THAN YOU. And he looked like he REALLY fucking enjoyed that vantage point from the moral high ground. He really looks down on those friends of his huh. And his destiny for always having to 'win' his friendships and relationships is being betrayed and cheated on...don't @ me it's canon. I WANT TO STUDY MEW SO BAD, because from one angle he looks righteous and from another he looks like the living fucking worst. Amy Elliot-Dunne, here's looking at you kid.
🔺3. Boston (6)
Okay. I’m here to get yelled at. Yell at me all you want. Get it over with. Come on. I don’t expect it to be over. I just want you to vent. Fine. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. It was unintentional. It was so nice of me to introduce Mew to something new. I just borrowed him for a bit. What’s a big deal? Let’s be honest here. Without my help, there was no way Mew got his hands on a top-tier like that.
Boston sashaying into the hostel totally unrepentant is a top 5 Only Friends MOMENT and I LIVED for it. He decided the 'brazen' part of 'brazen slut' was the part to lean into and honestly, as one of the few people this ep actually owning their shit I respected the hell out of that. YEAH I FUCKED HIM, I FUCKED HIM BEFORE YOU DID, AND I FUCKED HIM AGAIN AND SO WHAT? In Boston's mind, everybody wins here: Ray wins, because Mew is single again, Mew wins because he knows Top's an untrustworthy cheater, and he wins because he wanted to fuck Top and he fucked Top. Everybody wins, let's just move on. I love the simplicity of Boston's worldview, and how internally consistent and oddly pure it is. He has the morals of an alley cat, but he never LIES. He'll manipulate, but he never actually deceives. In some ways you can trust him absolutely, he's unwavering. Fascinating.
🔹4. Nick (4)
I love him. He doesn’t have to care about me. I don’t have to be his number one. But he must not hate me. Do you get it?
Man, Nick and Sand were almost tied because equally pathetic this week, but at least Nick got a teensy bit of a kick in by telling Mew about the sex tape. Also interesting how he didn't rat Sand out to Boston despite Sand clearly not thinking or really caring about how sharing the audio clip would blow back on Nick. Nick's a creep, but he has a little bit of a code. Do I feel sorry for him, no I don't, but maybe a teeny tiny bit.
🔻5. Sand (2)
I’m your emergency staff anyway. I’ve always been since the first day we met.
I cannot believe that in episode 7 of Only Friends we got a scene where Sand and Nick hug each other and cry together over how pathetically they simp for shitty men who will never love them. WHOMST is doing it like Jojo n'em, I ask you? THAT MAN CALLED YOU A WHORE IN FRONT OF PEOPLE and then did it again while flinging you to the ground and in return you rescued him from a car crash, fed, bathed and shaved him. Sand has a degradation kink, that's the only thing that makes sense here I swear, because how can one human be down THIS atrocious? I wanna see how low he can go, and I also wanna see if we're getting that baseball bat and WHOM FOR. All the things I wished for Nick before the show aired, I now wish for Sand. Boil that bunny baby.
🔺6. Top (7)
I will make you fall in love with me again.
Top really stunned that he's lost. Look, I know my read on Top isn't the consensus read on Top, and yeah maybe I'm wrong, but to me this is only incidentally about Mew, because for Top Mew is a means of self-actualization. Getting Mew to be his boyfriend was awesome, because it means TOP is awesome. Losing Mew over a rookie fucking mistake is a tragedy because it means Top is a loser. Getting Mew back would reaffirm Top's awesomeness to himself. TOP LOVES THE IDEA OF MEW, NOT MEW. I wish I could show you guys the parade of Tops that my peeps and I have met in life so you could understand why I cannot stand this man and want to see him in ruins. But yeah, he's on the rise, because Mew is totally gonna take him back after his disaster run with Ray.
🔺7. Gap (8)
That look you gave. Was it intended to lure me to come after you?
Drake is back yet again, my favourite guest star. They totally cheated by not letting Gap and Mew actually touch lips, although that's probably character accurate. But Mew gets somebody else to look down on and feel morally superior to, and that's his version of an orgasm so Gap totally got SPIRITUALLY laid.
🔻8. Cheum (5)
I was rooting for Top. I thought he was a good guy.
At least she's keeping the group project afloat so they don't fail this damn class, but literally NOBODY ELSE thought Top was a good guy, NOT EVEN MEW. Jesus fix it girl.

Okay more screaming about Wednesday specifically THAT moment during the final ep:
Enid walks out of a forest, covered in blood and wounds from her previous battle for her life. Enid was shown to be (incredibly justifiably) afraid of creepy shit like exploring spooky ass mansions or going in the woods, but homegirl did not hesitate to RUN through those dark, murder-filled woods in order to find Wednesday. I believe her wolfie form was triggered by not just the powerful blood moon, but also her deep sense of protectiveness over Wednesday. Like, she literally JUMPKICKED Hyde!Tyler’s ass when he was choking out her moon even though this is her first shift and she has no prior experience with controlling her wolfed out state. That’s…. Pretty fucken gay and the fight scene was pretty fucken AWESOME with how visceral it got. Apollo really looked at the ao3 fics we were pumping out and said, “Bet.”
Furthermore, the fact that Wednesday instantly recognized Enid in the midst of all of this adrenaline rushing and shadowy scenery? How Enid initially snarled at Wednesday but seemed to pause and calm down a little upon recognizing her ? Calming down to the point where our beloved ray of sunshine got distracted mid-fight and gave Tyler an opportunity to strike back? Also super fucken mega gay behavior, like yes Enid my darling that’s your girl I know you were so worried over her bUT MY GOD FOCUS ON THE SERIAL KILLER RIGHT BEHIND YOU BABYGIRL I KNOW THIS IS YOUR FIRST SHIFT BUT GODDAMN!!!
I will never shut up about the Hug Scene™️ and its buildup. Enid stumbling out of the woods all blood covered and even though she’s in Ajax’s arms she isn’t like, “Thank god you’re safe” or whatever. No, she takes one look around and immediately asks in a soft, shaky voice, “Where’s Wednesday?” AND THAT TINY MOMENT OF DISTRESS ON HER FACE WHEN NO ONE ANSWERS HER. ARGH. EMMA PLLEASSEEE YOURE FEEDING US SO WELL. When Enid sees Wednesday walking out she a) is the first one to even recognize Wednesday’s silhouette against the fog b) HER IMMEDIATE RELIEF IS SO PLAIN TO SEE ON MY GOD c) does not hesitate to pull away from Ajax and fucken sprint into Wednesday’s arms.
The.
Slow.
Motion.
THE SLOW MOTION YOUR HONOR.
Gods, that just emphasized the sheer gravity of this moment SO MUCH, after so many attempts to hold her moon close Enid finally says, “FUCK IT” and goes right in because fer all she knew Wednesday could have been dead by now. The way she tightly embraces Wednesday before pulling back with so much relief and T E A R S, my god Emma you understood the assignment so well. Wednesday’s wide-eyed stare shifting into equally intense passion as she suddenly pulls Enid back to into her arms and they just CLING to each other with amazing shots of how emotional their expressions are. So fucken full of love and relief and wanting. I especially love the way you can see everyone in the background smiling at the pair. Shit dude, even Ajax shared a knowing look with another student, like even HE knows that Wenclair reigns supreme. The whole school be approving of Wenclair fr fr they witness this devotion-filled hug scene and collectively go, “Yeah, those two belong together. We ship it.”
The hug was so fucken tender. My god. It was a choice made by both of them, a choice both Enid and Wednesday made with equal fervor. They didn’t need words anymore, Jenna’s phenomenal acting gave Wednesday a longing stare that said it all. The way Enid’s hands spread across Wednesday’s back as she clings close, Wednesday’s eyes squeezing shut as if she’s just begging for this moment to last without any visions to get in the way. The final shot of the two embracing with her heads tucked so firmly into the crook of the other’s neck. Seriously, I’ve read some VERY top tier Wenclair fanfics, but none were as so potently, “Fuck… I almost lost this. I almost lost her” as the canon Hug Scene™️. I was losing hope for any Wenclair goodness that could balance out the sheer throw up that was Enid and Ajax making out, but the Hug Scene™️ literally broke into my house, dragged me outta my bed by my scruff, and went about beating the living shit outta me in my own kitchen at 5 am in the morning and it was AMAZING. Wenclair Slowburn Truthers rise up, because my god do we have a solid foundation to work with.

Wordless Richonne Moments That Spoke Volumes
Honestly, Rick and Michonne’s relationship kept us so fed that even brief moments where not a word was spoken still communicated so much about the love they have for one another. Reminiscing about them (as is routine 😌) I thought about how many great and meaningful wordless scenes shed light on how important and special they are to each other, even apart from the always A1 hugs, kisses, and moments that will land on my top 30. Without even counting those, there is still so much powerful and heartfelt stuff captured in just quick wordless actions. And I just have to revel in some of my personal favorites. ❤︎

A personal favorite pre-canon wordless moment is in No Way Out. It’s the moment when Michonne helps Rick remove his blood-covered garment after Carl’s been shot. Up to this point in the series, it was clear that Michonne had become a mother to Carl, especially in moments like the one in the episode prior, Start to Finish, where she helped cover him in walker guts. So it made perfect sense to see her so panicked and doing everything she can to help Carl after he was shot. But that subtle act of her helping Rick with his clothes as he’s understandably too dazed to think straight...it was this exchange in 6.09 that really communicated Michonne isn’t just mom in this infirmary, she’s a wife too. Her concern was for Carl and Rick.
I so love that this exchange was included because in a moment of extreme crisis for them it showed how much Rick and his wellbeing was a priority to her. How much she loves him. From the second they realized Carl had been shot, Rick and Michonne both seamlessly went into protective parent mode and operated like a well-oiled machine to get him to the infirmary. And when Rick later walks out of the infirmary to take on the walkers, Michonne immediately knows Rick needs her and joins his side, even despite the danger and wanting to stay by Carl’s side. Seriously, when Michonne told Rick “either way, you need me” back in Season 3 it really remained the gospel truth throughout the series. So yeah there’s just something genuinely caring about that super quick poncho moment in the infirmary and it’s a nice effective way to show how much he means to her.

Another great wordless moment is in the next ep, 6.10, when Rick finds that toothpaste with Daryl. My absolute favorite aspect of this subtle moment is when Rick grabs one of the toothpaste boxes and checks to see which type it is. Y’all. 🤭 I love this. Because see, a man who is just getting toothpaste for his friend would see that they found a box of toothpaste and just think “oh good, my friend wanted that.” But a man in love, a man in love says yeah we found toothpaste but lemme check this box real quick and make sure it’s the exact type my woman said she wanted.👌🏽 I’ll always appreciate how this whole toothpaste/mints through-line during the day was used to show Rick’s feelings for Michonne before they got together romantically that night. Because it showed how it wasn’t just about getting the basics the group needs to get by, he wanted to give her what she wanted and to do something nice for her beyond bare-bones survival. Rick really stays remembering all the details about Michonne, including her favorite type of toothpaste. And when she blessed his life by being all glowy in that robe earlier that morning and told him what she likes, he wanted to be sure he delivered. Hence him later being shown pocketing those oh so special mints. Forever here for it.

Of course another top tier wordless moment is in 6.11 when Rick reaches for Michonne and she holds his hand in the RV the morning after they finally got together. Their energies in that RV were just flat-out adorable. 🥰 I love how bashful but happy Michonne is and how blissful and content Rick is. It’s so sweet how Rick can sense her without even looking and lovingly reaches for her, and then smiles wanting her to know how happy she makes him. The joy they bring each other and the perfect partnership they are is just so on display without a word being spoken. I love this as the first sort of private (despite a full RV and Jesus eyeing them lol) post-canon moment we get to see them share after that night. Rick and Michonne both fully aware they’re in love is just perfection. And again, this moment is so meaningful because this wordless handhold is really all they needed to assure each other and know they’re in it for the long haul.

Rick’s reaction to finding Michonne’s hair in the traumatic season 6 finale is such a telling wordless moment. It will always stand out to me how confident Rick had been at every turn in this episode, even as they began feeling cornered, and it wasn’t until finding his love’s hair that he began to really let fear and stress sink in. The way he still holds onto the hair even when they return to the RV and just seems completely distraught that she and some of his closest friends could be hurt somewhere. 😢 Indicating they have Michonne really was the Saviors most effective tactic that day cuz it shook Rick to his core and likely triggered the memory of only finding Lori’s hair hanging from that walker’s mouth after she died in s3. It was already so evident that Rick deeply loves Michonne but this moment in that RV just really hammered that point home. It also emphasizes that “you’re okay/I’m okay” thing R&M have cuz he now knows she’s likely not okay and that instantly makes him not okay. She’s his other half, and his world seemed to be feeling off balance without her. I appreciate that they let this moment with Rick and her hair linger for a bit as just how much Michonne means to him was made blatantly evident.
And that’s only Season 6. They have several more. So It wouldn’t be me if there wasn’t a part 2. 😋

Something that really made me go crazy inside were the unexpected sweet moments from ep 4 of The Ravening war
Karna the most cutthroat person of the group, who had sold out Amangeaux time and time again letting her leave to flee with her sun, wrecking her plans but moving her to actual tears.
Colin leaving deli after baring his heart and soul and going to take care of raphaniel who definitely needs the support after the mental breaking moments he's had. Giving the little banana kid and his mom money. even though he knows he can never wash that stain away he knows what its like to grow up poor and without your dad.
Amangeaux and raphaniel's unexpectedly tender reunion. Despite the machinations raphaniel tried to put into motion its clear they might have actually been good friends.
Raphaniel losing his mind because after being essentially ostracized by the church after mistepping he longed to reunite with that feeling that accepted him heart and soul and yearning for it so much that he takes off after seeing the mushroom people and is the one to accpt the spores into his body.
just this is such a great fucking cast, their RP is top tier and does not make me feel normal. JUST OMG, I CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE LOSING MY MIND VER THESE INTERACTIONS RIGHT?

Some Ep 5 Thoughts now that I've got a moment to get it all down
I guess it makes extra sense why Sand was immediately welcomed by all the workers at the gogo club back in Ep 2
Was that shirt seriously 15,000 baht. I know the resale market can be wild but goddamn.
I am constantly confused by TopMew. There are so many scenes, not just in this ep, of them smiling and laughing and enjoying each other's company! But it's always overlaid with audio that makes it hard to just... accept that they're actually happy, even though they LOOK happy! Some of the bgm in this ep felt soooo sinister for these brief moments; my friend and I were sat there like "WHY DOES THIS FEEL SO OFF??"
I still don't know if they're boyfriends or not, which tbh is very queer of them.
I really enjoyed the way attention was drawn to Mew's broken glasses while they were getting it on
But I do feel like all Top really wants at the end of the day is cuddles. I mean yes, he wants sex, but he looked way happier with the cuddles.
WE GET LESS OF CHEUM/APRIL EVERY EPISODE AND I'M SO UPSET ABOUT IT
I love BostonNick so much. I love Nick being told by Top that Boston is the one chasing him down, and Nick immediately giving himself a Top tier makeover, and then Boston IMMEDIATELY DROOLING FOR IT.
Honestly I hope Nick wear's Top's cologne in bed. Train that boy to come after you like a dog, son. I support the insanity.
Boston had sooo many opportunities to do something nice for himself (weird Top roleplay sex with Nick, a foursome with RaySandNick), and instead he chose violence. Love that for him.
I'll be honest, when Sand started talking about not knowing his father I had this kneejerk panic moment that he and Sand were secretly half brothers. The moment passed, I think I've just been scarred by surprise incest storylines lmfao
That said, I enjoy the parallel of both of them coming from unexpected pregnancies, while their mothers treated each of them very differently.
Regarding the preview:
I really didn't think that Mew could rank lower in Poor Decisions than "I'll sleep with you if you stop doing drugs" and then he went and got Lasik. If he's a mastermind I'm gonna eat my own ass.
What is Nick gonna do to Drake???? It was easy for him to chase Top off coz Top didn't actually wanna be there, but WHAT IS HE GONNA DO TO CHASE DRAKE OFF??? I'm so invested, I can't wait

Finished season 3 of 9-1-1! What an incredible season. I love how easy it is to love the characters in the 118. So much character growth for my favs :’)
Some notes & observations:
- Chim is SUCH a good character 😭 the halloween episode this season was one of my favorites because of how lighthearted it felt compared to other eps.
- Abby coming back in the last episode made me hurt so bad for Buck. I beg your finest pardon- she felt like if she came back for him, she’d go back to being what she was before? That’s such a cop-out excuse. I hated that. I get that she needed to get out of there, but never communicating with Buck about how she felt is horrible and he did NOT deserve that. Good riddance. (no forgiveness to the woman who made him feel unworthy and bad)
- The tsunami arc was SO GOOD. Deeply impressed by it, and have been filed under “favorite episodes” (an ever changing list atm)
- Buck and Eddie did reach the “best friendism” I was looking forward to in season 2, but just like season 2, there is so much queer coding in their friendship. There’s little moments where they’ll say/do something for each other that feels so romantic, and it makes it difficult to look at their friendship as the platonic one it was supposedly intended to be.
- continuation of the last point : when Eddie got trapped in the well system & was dreaming of Christopher (which ultimately gave him the motivation to keep going and survive…chef kiss for that), there was A WHOLE LOTTA BUCK in that montage!! It’s almost like Buck is coparenting his child! Anyway.
- I’m not a huge fan of cops, and this season kind of highlighted many of my reasons. I really like Athena and how she interacts and supports other characters, but her attitude towards the general public feels icky to me sometimes. Michael and her kids nearly getting hate-crimed was awful and made me so sick, but the way she reacted to it was so ????. It kind of tainted her character a little bit for me. (although her arc at the end with the rapist was really sad and I gained a bunch of respect back for her wanting to take care of that)
- Maddie + Chim are a top tier couple, and MADDIE IS PREGNANT?!? what???? I’ve seen several spoilers for this show but I knew nothing about this arc!! Nada! So I am very much looking forward to seeing what happens there 👀
- I don’t know if I was imagining it, but I felt like a lot of the emergencies that happened this season felt very personal to the 118. More so than the last two seasons.
- I wish Bobby was my dad :(
- And on my last point, I fucking adore Hen and Karen. I want more of their story. Hen is such a beautiful character to me, and I’ve loved seeing her growth. Her relationship with Karen is incredible too (which I’m glad about, the cheating storyline in S1 was awful). I want more of my mother lesbians ❤️

-okay. we have to talk about stede hearing "the revenge" and his mind going completely blank aside from the one thought of "Ed" replaying over and over and over again to the point that all sense of self-preservation flies completely out the window (as he flies over the side of the ship) because the ONLY thing that matters to him in that moment is seeing Ed again. i can only imagine the looming sense of doom he must've felt as he realized Ed was noticeably absent from the rest of the crew when he found them, and then the cagey way they all spoke about where Ed went. i wonder if seeing Ed's body lying on that table gave him any sense of relief in the way that getting confirmation of something you'd feared was coming finally arrives
-also!!! let's talk about what must have started running through Olu's mind when he realized it was their ship!! did he immediately think of Jim? was he worried about them? did he assume they would've escaped blackbeard's clutches by now and gone on to bigger and better things?

-someone smarter than me needs to do a deeper analysis on the use of gnossienne no.5 as stede is climbing the ladder of the revenge, no doubt with thoughts of a beautiful and loving reunion with ed because surely he'll be there waiting for him, just as overjoyed to see stede as stede is to see him, only for the song and that fantasy to abruptly get cut off once stede realizes how dire the situation on the revenge has gotten
-hey fam do we think there's any significance of the crew being found desecrating that seagull in the captain's quarters or was that just a plot convenience thing bc obviously stede would check the captain's cabin for ed first

-side note: for the love of GOD con o'neill looks so stupidly hot in his reaction shot to stede telling izzy to piss off it's actually gonna give me heart palpitations. this is my formal petition to make con o'neill look permanently just a little bit damp and a little bit sad

-don't know if this is significant symbolism or not, but: ed is wearing the cravat, his chains, and the pearl necklace in the storm. he is NOT wearing the cravat or the chains in the fever dream, but he IS still wearing the pearls. the best analysis i can do around that rn is that the cravat symbolizes stede and this journey he's about to go on needs to be about Ed and Ed alone, but also Ed *feeling* and *thinking* he's genuinely alone, which is supported by the conversation he has with hornigold later when he reveals he's worried there's no one waiting for him in the real world. the chains im thinking could symbolize his blackbeard persona in a way - presumably he got the gold chains when plundering and gaining/maintaining his reputation for being ruthless and the chains are a physical reminder of that persona and reputation. in the fever dream, ed is stripped down to his most vulnerable state (which is interesting considering his hair and beard aren't in line with the s1 symbolism of his vulnerability - almost as if his heartbreak over stede has become so all-encompassing he's no longer able to hide it behind a beard or face-shielding long hair) so the chains would disappear just as his blackbeard reputation would disappear in order for him to get to the core of who he really is, which brings us to: the pearl necklace. we could literally talk for hours about the nuances of everything the pearl necklace represents regarding ed's fears, desires, identities, hopes and dreams for the future, childhood trauma, etc. etc. etc. but ultimately it represents the parts of ed he holds the closest to his chest and THAT is why he's still wearing it in the fever dream: because it's a representation of who he truly is, stripped down, at his core. and THAT is the person who needed to go on this journey in order to start to heal, without the influence of anyone or anything else making him feel the need to perform or be anything other than his 100% authentic, vulnerable self.
-the way i reacted to seeing how beautiful ed is as he's waking up in hornigold's hut is undeniable proof that i need to be put down
-"what did you do to me...while i was out...anything weird?" edward teach my beloved of all time. we will not be taking this incredibly funny and perfectly performed line delivery and making it sad by thinking about the implications of what past behaviors ed may have experienced from other shipmates when waking up after a night of blacking out

-okay so. my thoughts on the olu/zheng/jim/archie situation. i never posted this here when the trailer dropped bc i thought i was just going crazy but when i saw the olu/jim shoulder bump i immediately knew it was giving "exes who are still friends and are being supportive of the other person when they admit they've found someone new" vibes. THAT BEING SAID - i can see this whole thing being resolved in 2 ways: either they have jim and olu talk it out and officially decide to split to pursue their respective new flames while remaining best friends/family, or - and this is where i think we all hope this is going - we get a 4-way polycule. im 50/50 on whether the studio would greenlight that given they've already pushed the envelope with having a nonbinary character and basically everyone is gay, but at the same time i would hope the studio would recognize that the show was wildly successful due in large part to those key elements and would be in favor of pushing the envelope even further (in their eyes). i think jim and archie are gonna see zheng being an absolute badass and fall in love with her and zheng is gonna see jim and archie being absolute badasses and fall in love with them while already being in love with olu specifically because he's NOT a badass and olu's gonna admit he's still in love with jim and they're all gonna live happily ever after completely dominating the seas and killing colonizing dipshits :)

TO BE PLAYING GNOSSIENNE NO.5 WHILE STEDE LOOKS DESPONDENTLY AT THE RUINED REMAINS OF HIS CAPTAINS QUARTERS WHERE HE AND ED CONNECTED FOR THE FIRST TIME AND FELT LIKE SOMEONE FINALLY UNDERSTOOD THEM
-how the fuck did izzy on a crutch and a pegleg sneak up on stede in the captain's quarters lil homie HAS to be sounding like mr. krabs at this point
-"i think the knives really help bring the place together" he literally cannot physically bring himself to not be a bitch around izzy even when he's wallowing in his lost love i am so so so obsessed with him you have no idea
-i know we're all still reeling from the confirmation that stede has ALWAYS known ed - past the rose-colored glasses of falling in love with just the idea of someone - and how his mind works when he asks izzy point blank what they did to ed but. i cannot stop thinking about s1 ed not being able to look stede in the eye as he says "you were always gonna realize what i am" before leaving with calico jack because he was so terrified of the judgement he'd see in stede's eyes. he revealed a less-than-ideal (but comparatively pretty benign) part of himself to the person whose opinion he cares about the most and was too afraid to stick around to see if/when stede would finally reject him for not living up to the standards that ed thinks stede deserves. and yet. we now know with actual proof that stede not only never judged ed for his past and just kinda glossed over any erratic behavior/violent reactions during their time together in favor of keeping an idealized image of ed in his mind, stede understood ed on a deeper level than practically anyone else in the whole world, with the exception of izzy, ever did. stede was so intimately aware of the exact kind of person ed was and what his thoughts and behavioral patterns were that he knew without a shadow of a doubt that there were only two fates for ed if stede didn't reach him in time: he was either gonna watch the world burn or die trying.
-feeling BIG emotions over the almost-sigh that stede does when izzy tells him how ed took his leg for merely mentioning stede's name. the way he looks away and swallows down his guilt and grief and shame.
-"you sent him to doggy heaven" ohhhh my god i wanna know if stede was bracing himself for the heartbreak or the relief (or both!!) of hearing izzy say yes. as i mentioned above, stede had to have had a cloud of impending doom looming over him all these months wondering where ed is and worrying if he'll ever find him again, and that cloud must have only gotten infinitely darker when he found the crew on the revenge only to realize that ed wasn't with them. stede isn't stupid, he proved as much when he told izzy he knew ed was going to destroy everything around him or die in the process, and with ed being very noticeably absent it would only make sense for stede to jump to the worst-case-scenario of the crew having to kill ed before he killed all of them. i think he had probably been emotionally preparing himself for that outcome the second he noticed the crew being shifty about ed's whereabouts, so to get confirmation of it would obviously be genuinely heartbreaking but also an end to the sense of doom that had been hanging around him for a while.
-the way stede whips his head around to look at izzy when izzy tells him no, they didn't send ed to doggy heaven is so! heartbreaking! because you can see the instant flame of hope light up his face for a split second before he reads the profound sadness of izzy's expression as he tells stede they deserted him on a beach and left nature to do the rest. interestingly enough, stede doesn't seem at all reassured or renewed in his hope by this, and im wondering if he knows izzy is lying to him at that point to spare his feelings
-"yeah i was there. that cabin boy's name was felix. he was a really nice guy" i love that we're not only getting a crumb of lore about ed's past on hornigold's ship (that isn't frat-bro posturing with calico jack) but that the crumb we do get highlights ed's humanity. not only does he remember the name of a "lowly" cabin boy, but he remembers that the cabin boy was really nice and is angry that he died so senselessly and hornigold doesn't even seem to care

-"go on, bonnet. gimme your worst" i feel like i don't have the brain capacity rn to break that interaction down and tease out what izzy would've been expecting stede to do or say and what stede would've been thinking in that moment that was too overwhelming to actually voice but maybe someday i'll get to it
-"okay well i feel like im gonna choose...i feel like im supposed to choose...live" bbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooo the intentional writing of ed to say "gonna" at first and then switching it to "supposed to" is sooooooooo insane dude holy shit. i need to know what factors caused him to change his wording. what was he going to say he was gonna do. who or what is pressuring him to make him feel like he's supposed to choose to live. are those two choices - what he was gonna do vs. what he feels like he's supposed to do - at war with each other or is the conflict brewing from the different motivations behind wanting to live vs. feeling like you're supposed to live. the writing is just too good
-godddd someone needs to make a post on hornigold telling ed they're in a judgement-free zone which is basically ed reminding himself that his mind is a safe space for his thoughts and how unbelievably sad it is that ed would even need to remind himself of that in the first place. he's so used to scrutiny and judgement (and it's one of his biggest fears when it comes to the people he cares about the most) that he doesn't even think he's free from it in his own head
-im just gonna say it. ed talking about warmth and intercourse and orgasms is foreshadowing

-HOKAYYYY FOLKS WE GOTTA TALK ABOUT OUR FIRST TRUE COMPETENT!STEDE SIGHTING IN THIS EP. he not only devises an escape plan ALL BY HIMSELF, he has the knowledge and foresight to . and guess what? IT ACTUALLY. WORKED. in fact, it was a SWEEPING success where he got EVERYONE safely off the red flag ship and onto his own!!!! this wasn't just some raid won with brute force or a fuckery accomplished due to loony tunes rules, this was an honest-to-god escape plan that required learning the shifts of the guards on deck and at the entrance to the brig to ensure those spaces would be as empty as possible, knowledge of the sleepy-time effects of chamomile in concentrated forms, knowledge of the layout of the ship he's been on for, what? a few days? maybe a week?, knowledge of where they store their weapons and then figuring out how to use the crossbow as a zipline AND remembering to have someone cut the line to prevent any red flag crew from boarding the revenge, figuring out how they can use towels to use said zipline, remembering that the revenge no longer has a wheel and utilizing wee john's strength to secure them a new one while disabling the red flag ship thus greatly increasing their chances of a successful escape. i guess now we know what the hell is going on in towels (it's scheming and plotting)
-jim grabbing archie's hand has they leave the brig
-stede's little hand gesture and "sss" noise he makes to communicate to lucius and black pete they're gonna move forward now even though they're all physically so close it literally would've been quieter if he just whispered his directions to them
-the person at the wheel looking longingly up into the sky. how much do we wanna bet she was thinking about zheng
-"just breathe into it black pe-" WHY ARE THEY SHUSHING MY BOY BUTTONS HE'S RIGHT

-i genuinely love how buttons wastes NO time in assuming his first mate duties again and directing frenchie and roach to start preparing the ship for sailing. it's just a nice reminder that stede chose him as his first mate for a reason beyond his propensity to attract a motley crew of unique characters - buttons is a genuinely highly skilled, highly competent, and extremely dedicated and hard working sea farer. who may or may not actually be a sea witch that has taken on the form of a humble man
-i actually am very charmed by olu still trying to persuade zheng to spare the lives of his friends while they're making out
-ooooohhhhh the fact that olu had to choose between zheng and jim was such a delightful mini conflict to see him go through. i might wind up making a post about his thoughts and motivations in that moment later on because it's so quick but so profound
-okay 1) the raw emotions in zheng's yell when she sees olu escaping on the revenge literally gave me goosebumps. 2) the look of absolute betrayal on her face in that closing shot gave me even MORE goosebumps. 3) ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR SLIGHTLY SUPERNATURAL FIRST MATE Y'ALL THEY ALWAYS KNOW WHAT'S UP
-i can't wait to see how this betrayal plays out in terms of the red flag fleet being an enemy to the revenge, even though we know it's temporary since we've seen Zheng Yi Sao and her fleet fighting alongside ed and stede in the s2 trailer and in the promotional materials for upcoming episodes
-UHHHH STEDE'S HEARTBROKEN FACE AS THEY'RE LEAVING HELLO?????????????????????????????????

-UGH the CONFLICT you can see on stede's face when deciding whether or not to remove the fabric covering ed's head or not. does he want to remove the fabric so he can say one final goodbye, face to face? or does he want to leave the fabric on so his last image of ed in his memory will be when he's alive and excited at the prospect of running away with stede?
-the fact that stede is literally pulling the wool from over ed's eyes and waking him back up both physically and spiritually(???)
-like ed, who was resigned to his fate and at peace with his choice to sink into the depths and never wake up again, INSTANTLY finds the motivation to live the SECOND stede interacts with him and he starts fighting as hard as he can to return to the surface, and just when he thinks he's not strong enough and he'll succumb to the darkness anyway, a light appears to pull him back from the brink. stede's voice comes through begging ed to wake up, to come back to him, don't die please don't die, he's here now. and ed's face as he's hearing stede talk to him is so full of love and amusement and admiration and then a little confusion as mermaid!stede appears but goes right back into his fully smitten expression and longing gaze and i just. don't know how we were ever expected to recover from this.
-THEY WERE ACTUALLY SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CRAZY TO JUST THROW THE GOD DAMN GENTLEBEARD/BLACKBONNET SEASON 1 BEST MOMENTS MONTAGE AT US LIKE THAT WITH NO WARNING DURING AN ALREADY EXTREMELY EMOTIONALLY TAXING SCENE

BLEACH: The Thousand Year Blood War Ep 16 Reactions and Thoughts
Overall reaction:
Another late reaction post, but considering the next episode is airing today, I had to get this out before then...also, there was no way I was doing this reaction post without gifs from this episode!
If I was blown away last week, I have lost my footing this week. OH. MY. GOD! There's was way too much good stuff this week, I don't know where to start.
Highlights:
Momo's cameo: SHE'S BAAAAAACK…for ten seconds. I'll take what I can get!
What's happening with Ichigo: I mentioned my theory in the last episode reaction that Ichigo is going to the Reio's past and this is all likely a test to see if he can be as strong as Reio to take his place as part of Kyouraku's plan. Well, it looks like that's basically what's happening. He's getting visions of Reio's life and we even got the multiple irises. Is this a sign of him simply seeing into Reio's past, or is it a sign he has the potential to become the next Soul King?
Toshiro vs Cang Du and the lead up: this was just top tier! Form the music, the voice acting, and the animation, it was a beautiful adaption. Seeing Toshiro's hollowfied bankai was a moment for me, because I'll forget how I reacted to seeing it for the first time in the manga all those years ago. As a Toshiro fan, seeing him struggle, especially when Rangiku was thrown down in front of him, and he was helpless to even crawl over to her, was heartbreaking.
Then, to see him rise up again, with a form that looks this cool, and to take down the one that had harmed both him and Rangiku, it's one my favourite moments from the arc. Now here I am watching it ANIMATED (for, like three minutes, but who cares?!). And not just animated, but voiced. Romi Park couldn't have done a better job, and whoever thought to sync Toshiro and Hyourinmaru's voices when Hyourinmaru deserves a raise. That moment gave me the shivers, and it adds to the reveal. And just look at him!
I absolutely love how the ice has been coloured, and the small particles falling from his bankai is such a good touch. The conclusion of this fight had me sighing sadly, because I know where this goes for Toshiro and Rangiku. It was sad enough to see him stumbling and then collapsing trying to get to Rangiku, but then knowing that's Giselle's shadow and what she's about to do to him...I am both dreading and excited for zombie Hitsugaya. So then, this begs the question of will Toshiro make another appearance in this arc. The first arc adapted volumes 55 to 61 more or less, and this arc is still volume 62 if I'm not mistaken? Zombie Hitsugaya first appears in volume 65, so my guess is we will be getting an adaption of his fights against Ikkaku, Yumichika, and Mayuri in this cour. The excitement is real everyone!
Shinji's shikai and bankai: the man of the hour. Fifth division's best captain. The fashion icon. The dork who spells everything backwards. The spin master himself. Shinji Hirako is here and he got his bankai animated. I knew it was coming, I had screamed during the trailer when I saw it was going to be included as part of the arc in a small way, but I still screamed when I saw and heard him activate it. When I read it in Can't Fear Your Own World, I knew I needed to see this animated, and the team behind the anime has made that happen with flying colours. Would it have been better to see him use this ability against a massive army? Of course! But the emonstration of it here was still amazing, and like with Toshiro's fight, the combination of the animation, colouring, music, and Shinji's voice actor made this scene AMAZING.
They make Shinji look like a freaking tank here (and he deserve it considering how the rest of this arc goes for him). Then there's the animation for his shikai, which was also just *chef's kiss*
Sui Feng gets her bankai back: I'm not a fan of Soi Fon, but even I have to admit this scene was great. Just look at this explosion, it's epic!
Mayuri the Christmas tree continues: HIS SUIT/COSTUME CAN CHANGE COLOUR?! HE REALLY IS A CHRISTMAS TREE!
Shuhei, Ikkaku, and Yukichika vs Mask De Masculine: in my initial reaction, I said Sajin appeared the battle earlier than he did in the manga. My mistake, he actually does appear at this point in Shinji vs Bambietta, I had just forgotten about it. What IS early though is Shuhei, Ikkaku, and Yukichika's battle again Mask De Masculine.
I'll admit it here and now that Mask is one of the few Sternritter I don't like. I found him annoying the manga, and so far, the anime hasn't really changed my opinion of him. So when I saw him appear in this episode, I cringed a little. I thought the anime wasing going to come back to him and just show he'd defeated Shuhei, Ikkaku, and Yumichika off screen like it happened in the manga. I was pleasently surprised to see this was not the case, and that we actually get to see this fight. Yes, it's going to end with the three of them defeated, but it's still great to see them in combat, showing off their skills and getting some good banter in. If nothing else, at least Hisagi gets to look cool for a couple of minutes:
Why did Yumichika get a Shin'eiyaku?!: It the question that's got the fandom scrambling for answers, and I honestly didn't notice he got one the first time I saw the episode XD
Overall, what an episode! We got at least two iconic moments here, and they happened for two of my faves! I have high expectations for the next episode, considering Momo will finally get an appearance that's more than a minute long (I hope)!

bad buddy ep 11 (rewatch)
how many times does pran pull out his entire (extremely intense) set of markers and not use them:

this episode just leaves me in tatters, in a very different way to ep 10.
this episode is so fucking sad. like, in the really accurate way sadness like this shows up. where of course they go fishing, flirt, hang out, smile, laugh, but the baseline emotion for this episode is this sadness. it's this kind of exhaustion and the knowledge that somethings hanging over their heads.
its the kind of sadness that somethings over and choosing not to look at it can push it away for a bit, but the ending still permeates the episode.
there's so much sky in this episode. they're really shown to be together in spaces that overtake them. but also together in the world in public, outside and not hidden, always looking at each other.
there are so many shots in this ep where you can see they're both struggling and tired. and still they choose each other.
also the parallel that pat asks pran to not talk about something, where the last time at the village pran asked pat. ugh this show.
i really love the domesticity
and pran never chilling with the manipulate malewife vibes
also the way pat looks at pran in this ep.
and patpran in the foreground with tong and yod in the back. like a sign of: people can stick to what they believe in and still get old and live good lives, even if its tiring. this show doing the queer it gets better shit but in one shot and perfectly.
the emotional turmoil is never about their relationship for pran they're a certainty. through the whole episode it's clear that they're grappling with their parents and the fallout and not with each other and i deeply appreciate that.
the space to have complicated difficult emotions without it becoming a problem in your relationship, that's some rare shit (in a bl but also in life lol).
his stare omg
this fucking line and the confidence of its delivery. pran has never doubted pat this whole time and it fucking shows. god.
this top tier pran face. truly 11/10, incredible.
i love this speech. it fully makes me cry every time.
also, relationships are hard. and the things you like about someone can change, they can become annoying to you, or they can disappear. the fact that the thing they both chose about each other are, being nosy enough to be helpful and being a lot in every way, they're saying that they know that the other person isn't perfect and nor is their relationship. but they chose them anyway, because of it and not despite it.
just yeah, they deserve so much of this and more. i'm so glad they get it.

and the other conversation that also leaves me in tears (this ep is just tears for me).
it's pat coming back to pran's 'as long i have you' and responding in kind. letting him know that pran's enough for him too, and they can hide and live how they need to because he's realized that.
it is heartbreaking that this is what they have in the end. it's the ending that pran had already realized and accepted, finally being acknowledged by pat. because they might not be breaking up but they are. they're losing the relationship they could have had, an easy comfortable one supported by everyone they know, and instead have to carve out a tiny space to survive. and they do it because they know that this space is precious to them, but it's still fucking sad that they had to. (and again, this show is so queer, because these are the relationships and decisions that so many queer people have to make every fucking day and bb conveyed it so well and with such nuance)
and then this song, which i love. and this lovely incredible inkpa moment.
but also the fact that kornwai show up in this montage and then didn't get together. like p'aof knew what the fuck he was doing. and yes, unlike the other two couple they're leaning away from each other, but fuck you can't just drop them into a love song montage and not have it imply things. it implies things!!!
ok so i'm sure no one was thinking about this but this scene reminds of this fucking k3g scene where the father comes and blesses the couple and my mind can't let it go. because it feels like with the line "the world didn't change me either" tong gave his blessing for patpran to live the life they wanted to lead. and idk i'm always emotional about k3g connections.
and this final shot, to really just dig in the knife in my heart. the closing with the knowledge that this will be the last time in a long while that pran gets to sing out his love for pat, and that part of them choosing each other is sacrificing other parts of their dreams.
i'm just fully not ok about this ep and likely never will be. i'm sure that is clear from the ramblings above.

Two questions: top 5 things that the Inexperienced Jared Observer should watch him in
Which Terror ep would you rate as Thee best and why?
OOOH HO HO AND I SHALL ANSWER WITH GUSTO
Ok. Barring the obvious three choices (i.e. Foundation, The Terror, and Chernobyl, which are really the biggest powerhouses of Jared's acting abilities to date, and then the tier two shows: Carnival Row, Mad Men (it is a very good show overall but if you're there just for jared it takes a while to get to him and it takes a LONG time to get over him), and The Crown), these are my recommendations:
Certain Women
His part in this movie is very short, but honestly. it really shows how much this man can do with such a little character, really proving the "no small parts only small actors" adage that folks like to throw around. I still think about him a lot. really showed such a range with so little and it baffles me to this day. Also it's an anthologized narrative and his part and also Lily Gladstone's role in it (her first film role ever btw) as being a horse lesbian with Kristen Stewart really makes it worth the watch a lot more than some of the other bit part things I've seen him in.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
I genuinely think he's my favorite Moriarty of all time. Full stop. he's just such a wicked delight, and it will forever make me curse Guy Ritchie for only giving him bit parts in some of his other films. absolutely criminal.
The Devil's Violinist
@prismatica-the-strange and I absolutely did not go into this film expecting it to be as good as it is. we thought it was gonna be a flop. that Jared Harris was gonna play the devil and we'd have a laugh and that would be that. Incorrect. Turns out the guy playing Paganini is actually a bonafide child prodigy violinist and he blows a LOT of the musician biopic performances out of the water because he REALLY DO BE PLAYING THAT VIOLIN LIKE THAT. Oh and also Jared plays his manager who is literally the devil and he has a pincer beard. and he's a sarcastic little shit and he's just a delight.
Two of Us
This was genuinely the first film that made Jared a lifelong stand-out name to me at age fourteen. iykyk. He also fulfilled every McLennon shipper's dreams with this movie by kissing Aidan Quinn full on the lips. So if you want an explanation of why he queer codes a lot of his roles, this is it.
It's really hard to choose between The Beast Must Die, The Quiet Ones, and the 2015 Poltergeist remake, so I suppose I'm gonna go with The Beast Must Die because he's a saucy little asshole and he absolutely looks the prettiest in that. But that's the bitch of it with : this man has made a career of making himself a highlight no matter what kind of bit part you throw at him, so like honestly anything in his filmography is worth watching. But yeah he's so pretty in the beast must die. That's all I got.
As for the second question... man why can't I choose all of em? why??? 😭😭😭 I can't pit all these bad bitch episodes against each other at any given moment in time man. I love this show too much. I simply cannot choose. it's all so good. I would like to say it's ep 5 for the way jared acts drunkenly (best drunken performance I've ever seen in my entire life), but then I think about him on the gunwale with blanky talking about the reindeer and laughing and how much Jared literally changed from the script to make that moment so goddamn endearing and human. but then I also remember the moment blanky leaves him like??? DUDE. I can't. I cannot choose. my favorite episode is the whole show.

Finished S1! Here's my collective thoughts:
Down To A Sunless Sea-- This episode really clarified that I don't have a firm enough grasp of Cathy as a character. She's usually intuned with her emotions; but the trauma she suffered with her ex was so suppressed (because she didn't want to be a victim) that she couldn't see the parallels between her rationalizations and the woman. Tbf, Jeff? was really slick about his creepster, stalker ways. One thing I did notice: Cathy, since ep. 1, doubts herself a lot; and I like the consistency of that. Overall, I like this episode; but it has touch and go moments I have to think over. Not bad, but a little puzzling (though I completely understood the themes/buildup/character work leading up to and after the climax.)
Fever: Cullen-- definitely a character. I liked that Winslow and Jamie were given more complex places in the story (Winslow arguing aggressively for the community was a great twist to my expectations); and Vincent and Father trying and failing to reason with Cullen was a great story beat. Mouse getting hurt was unexpected but perfectly logical; and I'm glad the episode didn't take the easy way out of that. It also allowed Mouse's forgiving nature to take center stage once more. Vincent and Cathy were stellar; and I'm glad the chest wasn't dumped into the pit.
Everything Is Everything-- An okay ep. Loved the boy character and his relationship with Cathy; enjoyed the gift of words motif woven throughout; enjoyed the politics of the group (a mirror to Below but with more archaic, inflexible rules); liked the scene where the dogs cowered to the beast in Vincent; and Vincent's intercession with the grandfather and his conversations with Father were great, too.
To Reign In Hell-- Marvelous episode (though I did laugh at the giant rising and sinking into the mists.) The backstory, Winslow, Pascal, Jamie, Cathy, Vincent, Father, the community, Paracelsus-- all of them excellent with not a step out of place. Really getting attached to and even more curious about the world Below. Cathy learning to stop her fear from affecting her and Vincent's connection was one of those "ah, there's that thing Nan wrote about!" moments, so that was fun. John Pater chews up the scenery (which were all fantastic.) Winslow will be missed-- hadn't thought that's how he would die, actually, but his funeral scene was top tier.
Ozymandias-- Only Cathy would be surprised that a man willing to ignore the sins of his employees in their first ep. together would do it again (security guards, tower issues, etc.) I loved that Elliot chose the tower over Cathy; loved Elizabeth and her plot (and that I got to mee her~) and how Mouse rose to the occasion, though not wisely, to help her; love Cathy's old friend and her plotline; loved Joe's participation; loved the end scene. Great episode.
A Happy Life-- Love this episode. I think it finally gave Cathy something to ground herself in. Love that Vincent let her go, love that the anniversary of her mother's death spurred it, love her father's comfort and understanding, love Joe's admittance and regret, love her friend to death, love how her "happiness" was parallel to Vincent's longing and mourning, love that she drove back immediately and Vincent knew and met her, love that there was progress to this side of her character (one might say finally.) LOVE Father's speech about praying for them both (saw it on your blog and was waiting to see where it would slot into the series. Perfect placement.) Great final episode.
And now-- onto the book between S1 and S2! :DDDDDD

This episode really clarified that I don't have a firm enough grasp of Cathy as a character. She's usually intuned with her emotions; but the trauma she suffered with her ex was so suppressed (because she didn't want to be a victim) that she couldn't see the parallels between her rationalizations and the woman.
And now you're venturing into the territory where I start to lose some of my patience with Cathy. We've already established her naïveté when it comes to anything outside her established worldview. I think she can also be willingly obtuse when it comes to things she just doesn't want to deal with. I've said before that I don't think she has a malicious bone in her body, but she's really bad at thinking about anything beyond the moment she's living in. And that exacts a heavy toll. Not only on her, but on Vincent, too. BTW, her crazy ex-boyfriend/stalker is Stephen Bass. Remember that name. This won't be the last time you hear it.

Everything you said about Fever and To Reign in Hell? I agree 100%. Great episodes. I like Cullen so much that I hijacked him, along with one particular line of his to Vincent in that ep, and built my "Vincent - the Early Years" fanfic on that. And I still miss Winslow. He was a great character.
Only Cathy would be surprised that a man willing to ignore the sins of his employees in their first ep. together would do it again

Yes!! That's a pretty damn big ask she had of him, and his response was completely understandable. I would've told her no, too. Love doesn't mean giving up your dreams just because someone wants you to. Only Vincent would consider that a reasonable request. And he's way too good at giving up on his dreams.
Agree with everything you said about A Happy Life. It was damn near perfect as a first season finale. I gotta ask: what did you think about the "soul" kiss at the end? Ron Koslow (the creator/showrunner) was willing to have it end with a real kiss, but Standards & Practices at CBS made them do it that way instead. They were worried folks would consider a real kiss to be bestiality. Can you believe that? Oh well, it was a long time ago.
Have fun reading Bright Spirit Descending. You'll notice as you get to the end of it that Nan stole some of what she'd written for AWTN and plugged it into this pro novel. But hey, if you can't steal from yourself, than who can you steal from? 😁
Don't forget, when you start S2, to watch Chamber Music before Remember Love. I think Chamber Music beautifully sets the theme and tone of S2. Make of that what you will.

Right like of those moments have any lasting impact and I'm so confused ??? They had him in danger in the last ep and didn't use it at all? Why would you do that? And why would you have their first kiss be so short it's truly insane have they never seen a single romantic storyline, akskdjdjd it's driving me up the wall and also it seems the angst they're gonna do for them is the supervisor/employee thing which???? I've seen a billion cop shows and they almost never use that bc it's so basic especially when you have constant danger and serial killers and explosions and a 100 different things you could use for top tier angst. Oooh it's gonna be so bad for us when the cw goes down, the streaming platforms are cancelling everything and even so most of their shows don't even have enough episodes for a half baked romance let alone a good one, networks are churning out them most pathetic shit bc everyone who has a single decent idea goes to streaming to have it butchered... I'm afraid we're gonna see much less romance in general especially those epic love stories.

My thing is they aren’t even using the supervisor angst right. That should’ve been more of a concern before they even got together. Where is the angst from Tim about potentially messing with Lucy’s reputation? It was established that he’d never want to do that and now it’s not even a problem?
I think what frustrates me most of all is it’s so obvious they ALMOST got it. They had everything aligned for god tier angst with that 5x01 set up. Them knowing they’re attracted to each other but pushing it down while Lucy tried to make herself feel better? That could’ve been some prime idiots to lovers but it feels like they just got tired of writing it right at the crucial point. THEY EVEN BROUGHT BACK ROSALIND? For essentially nothing?? I still don’t know why they didn’t have Rosalind threaten Tim at the peak point and call it a day.
At this point I didn’t even need a top tier clever plotline for them I just needed a confession arc that made me feel anything at all. The cw is so shitty in so many ways but also why are they the only ones who understand how to do angst and romantic tension? Every ship made me feel things on tvd! Even ones I didn’t ship!

Finished Avatar the Last Airbender the live action and it wasn't terrible, it wasn't great:
I came into this show not expecting it live up to the original, after watching the Percy Jackson series, I greatly lowered my expectations for ATLA live action.
I understand the time constraints, 8 episodes just isn't enough to show everything, still I think they made some questionable decisions.
The stuff I was "meh" about:
-Cave of two lovers. I don't understand why show this now, when this took place during book 2
-Too much Ozai, Azula and fire nation. Why integrate Azula into the whole Admiral Zhao mission? There was no need for that
-Not enough the main trio bonding. The first 4 episodes felt extremely rushed. I just couldn't buy into Aang, Katara and Sokka being so close by ep 8. We just didn't get to see them have special moments with each other.
-No water bending training. How did Katara get so good at water bending? so good she was able to challenge Pakku? I guess she train behind the scenes...? Remember how Aang was such a natural at water bending, it made Katara jealous? little things like that was missing. Cutting out the fire nation scenes to include these moments would have been the right thing to do
-Avatar Roku man. Just I don't know, not the Roku I remember from the original
-Aang being afraid of fire bending. That was so important in the original. They didn't even touch up on that
-The reason why Aang left. Here he just went out to clear his head. The impact of what happened was greater in the original bc Aang was scared and ran away. Something so easy to not change. I don't get it.....????
The stuff I was "whoa" about:
-The cast obviously. Everyone was on point. Sokka even sounded like Sokka lol I'm not ngl, actor for Zuko impressed me the most. I see some complain he wasn't angry enough.....but like he kept being so mean to his soldiers and that was totally in character
-I liked how they mixed several stories together. Aang saving his friends, angry forest spirit, no face (forgot his name) spirit, aang getting captured and rescued by the blue spirit, aang and zuko talking, was all combined and it worked. Like that was actually well done
-Avatar Kyoshi is the baddest, need I say more?
-The cgi. Top tier. Thank god. The bending looked so good. Appa and momo looked amazing
-The sets, the costumes and makeup were awesome. The crew killed it.
-The brutality of fire......I was shook at that one dude getting burned alive and just showing the attack on the air nomads was a great opening
-Showing Sokka's trauma. Made me feel for him more than I ever did and that's saying a lot
-Zuko’s crew being the same soldiers he saved from being sacrificed was an unexpected change and I loved it
-Episodes 6, 7 and 8 were good! I think these episodes saved the show for me
Overall, I think it was pretty good for what it was. Could have obviously been loads better, but whatever lol Ima need for people to keep watching and rate it high on Netflix cause I want to see Toph! I want to see Ba Sing Se. Hopefully, the showrunners take all the criticisms and make a better season 2. I give it a 7/10. On a tier list its in B+ tier (maybe a A-).
