Mushroom Chocolate
After you have made your own mushroom chocolate, chill the chocolate bars. If you chill them in the fridge the mushrooms will begin to bloom. A bloom is an emulsion of sugar that forms on top the chocolate. But it's not harmful and won't affect the taste. After cooling, the chocolate should be stored in an airtight container. A glass Snap-Ware container is an excellent option. Make sure you line the container with waxed baking paper to avoid the chocolate from sticking.
In the majority of cases it's just regular chocolate, but it does contain a few specific ingredients. It's made from a mix of cacao powder and wild porcini mushrooms that are foraged. Porcini mushrooms are delicious and earthy, making them perfect for desserts. Coconut sugar is added to the chocolate bar to add sweetness.
A popular alternative medicine for a variety of conditions, functional mushrooms have been utilized for many years in traditional cultures. Although they don't have the same effects as psychedelic mushrooms, they do aid in the healing of various physical systems. Combining mushroom chocolate with dark chocolate is an incredibly nutritious and delicious treat. It is rich in nutrients and vitamins.
The effects of the chocolate work in the same way like mushrooms that are consumed by themselves one up mushroom. The psilocybin in the mushroom is converted into psilocin in the body, leading to the altered sense of perception. The effects last approximately six hours and usually begin between 20 and 40 minutes after consumption. Anyone who has consumed hallucinogenics should seek medical help immediately if they experience adverse effects.
Shroom chocolate is a popular form of psilocybin-based items. There are literally thousands of mushroom products in Canada, and chocolate shrooms are among the most popular. Besides chocolate, shroom gummies are delicious. They mask the bitterness from dried shrooms.
Chocolate made from mushrooms can boost your immune system and improve your overall health. It can be mixed into your favorite smoothies or energy balls, or add it to your oatmeal for a delicious snack mushroom chocolate bars. Dark chocolate also contains ingredients like reishi and cordyceps mushrooms. Soy, sea salt, and also tree nuts are some other ingredients.
The effects of chocolate mushrooms can be very profound. They can alter heart rate, breathing and mood. This chocolate is made of organic whole fruiting mushroom grown in the USA and coconut sugar. But a chocolate mushroom bar is still a chocolate bar at heart. Moksha Chocolate is a healthy chocolate bar.

January Jewels 2020
I’ve purposely put off writing this monthly wrap-up because, well, christ. January was a terrible month. I don’t need to go into the details of why, but the consensus from everyone that I’ve talked to fully agrees with me on this. What the hell happened? Starting a new decade is supposed to be great. In any case, I’ll always have high hopes for the future. And I’m just thankful to begin a new month. Here’s what went down in the pit that was January 2020.
First things first, I recapped how my 2019 resolutions turned out. Why don’t more people do this? Where’s the accountability in reviewing your past resolutions? They’re not fucking birthday wishes, they’re intentions! More people need to follow through with this, even if the results aren’t what you hoped for.
I made my 2020 resolutions.
I fell absolutely in love with this sketch.
I did two podcasts with Nathan - one where we talked about the pope incident and one where I absolutely scream at him about Hillary.
I read Jenny Slate’s new book as well as a tiny little book about how to live a good life.
I ended up buying another J. Crew swimsuit (the same one I bought a few months ago, but this time in red) and I have no regrets.
In love with Trader Joe’s (dairy free) coconut whipped cream, I can’t stop using it in hot chocolate.
I rewatched (or watched for the first time, I truly can’t remember) The Staircase and it’s so good. I’m pretty sure Marla got me MP3 copies of this years ago and I did watch it, but I completely forgot about it in detail. Such a good watch. If you’ve already seen it, do you know about the owl theory? It’s a wild one, but, like, I think an owl did it now?
I’ve been using a small bottle of OUAI’s Wave Spray and if I can figure out how to not overspray it, it’s a great product. Once you use it though, your hair only looks good that day. After you sleep on it, your hair looks like shit. (Is that true of all hair products? I have absolutely no idea.)
Bought this Banana Republic top for $13 on sale and I love it because it does not feel like it cost so little.
I don’t know if it’s a Canadian brand but I have found a wicked alternative to Dollarama: Buck or Two. I went to one in Brampton and they’ve got everything.
I watched most of the SNL with Jennifer Lopez and wow did it suck. 99% of the sketches were basically “She’s pretty. That’s the joke.” Fucking hated it. They do this a lot of the time with certain actresses and I can’t ever tell if it’s because the actress loves doing these sketches or they’re afraid she can’t be funny. Whatever the reason is, blow my brains out, please.
I went to the Ear Inn in the city and it was lovely! Super old place. Service was great. Burger was great.
I went to Glossier with the intention of buying the cheek stain and then decided against it. It’s not a good product. I literally pinched my cheeks and got a better rosiness.
I came across probably my favourite winter children’s book of all time, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs. Look at one page of this magic.
Tumblr media
I was so happy to hear about this matter finally being settled in New York.
I went to The Dutch again for Restaurant Week for their steak tartare and it’s just heaven on a plate.
I rewatched the great What Lies Beneath and man, it’s still just such a great movie.
As you may have heard, Papyrus is going out of business, so I’ve popped in twice to see what the closing deals are and they aren’t worth it yet (only 30% off! C’mon! I won’t get out of bed for at least 60%), so I’ll keep stopping in every so often until they’ve become desperate.
Love this part of a recent SNL (below). (If you can’t see it in Canada, search for “white male rage SNL.”
youtube
I finally went to Boulud Sud for their pasta happy hour and man was it not worth it. The place has a terrible setup if you’re sitting at the bar, the food was absolutely nothing special and had ridiculous portion sizes. It’s also a bad sign when the bread is tastier than the entree. Super disappointing.
I tried on the bras and underwear from LIVELY in Soho and even though it’s priced reasonably, I couldn’t find anything I loved. I have a feeling that I could be into it though, so I’ll go again sometime in the future for sure.
I’ll forever love the lunch special at Pil Pil on the Upper East Side. I know I probably bring this up too much, but man. Love tapas.
I can’t stop buying sunglasses for sale at ALDO. And I won’t.
Tumblr media
I finished season one of The West Wing and it was really good. I keep forgetting about it, but I should stick with it. People, like, loved that show, didn’t they?
I started using Sol De Janeiro’s Bum Bum Cream… on my butt. That’s what it’s for, no? So far, I mean… it feels smooth? It’s not at all greasy, which I like. Seems weird to have a cream just for your butt, but who am I to criticize.
Ate the fish tacos at Summer Salt and they’re good! It’s insane and great that they sell margaritas at a fast casual place, too.
Very into this Pat McGrath mascara that I got as a Sephora reward.
Love this Wells For Boys sketch (below) from a few years ago that I just saw for the first time (thanks for showing me, Irene!)
youtube
I haven’t been there in years, but I went to Sweet Afton for happy hour in Astoria the other day and had the pickle martini which actually wasn’t terrible. Love that place.
Tried the lunch burger at Peter Luger finally! And yes it was a good burger (love that they use American cheese and the bun was very good even though it's not a potato bun). Steakhouse burgers are always hard for me to rate since a steakhouse burger is a real *entree* unlike the regular, everyday burgers that other places have which are not as big and overwhelming. An everyday burger is easy to rate since it's either great, overrated or shit. A steakhouse burger has nuances, how juicy is too juicy? How's the quality of the meat? What are the ideal toppings? Should someone shoot me for my extensive burger thoughts? Yes.
I went to see a free orchestral performance put on by Julliard at Lincoln Center and it was great. It reminded me so much of going to my brother Gary’s recitals when I was a kid, just loved it.
Had dinner at Portale. The pasta was insane. This place might be a rival for L’Artusi! Dare I say it! Every bite was phenomenal. MUST return. (Noteworthy: it also just got two stars in the Times.)
LOVED this piece about Ricky Gervais and the Golden Globes. Favourite line: “The least risky thing in the world is announced apathy.“
Maybe you don’t know this, but 90% of post offices in the U.S. have bulletproof glass between the workers and the customers. It’s obviously because awful things have happened, but I’ve been going to this one post office in the city on 23rd street that doesn’t have the glass and the workers are SO MUCH MORE PLEASANT. I wish all locations were like this one. Just a thought.
Just bought another one of these UNIQLO shirts that I love in dark grey.
Every January I make sure to:
Mark down all holidays/birthdays/anniversaries (Valentine’s Day, Daylight Saving Times, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving)
Check expiration dates for passport/license/health card/insurance and write down any important renewal dates
I’ve watched the first two new episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm and it fucking blows. There was only one thing I laughed at (when a server thought Larry was “oggling” her but he was really just keeping an eye on her tray with pigs in blankets) but OTHER THAN THAT, what a piece of shit season so far! I fucking hated the part in one episode where he videotapes the consent given between him and some woman as they’re making out. ALSO, and this has happened a few times over the seasons, he’s recycling fucking Seinfeld jokes. FROM THE SHOW. Talking about when it’s too late to get “Happy New Year-ed”? Are we kidding here?! Fucking lazy as hell. I might just stop watching.
I watched the new Taylor Swift documentary on Netflix and it’s really good. Even if you have zero opinion on her, I really liked it. (It also introduced me to this great song.)
Things that I’m looking forward to this month: seeing a Raptors game at Barclays Center, finally sitting down and watching season two of Shrill in its entirety, reading Joan Rivers’ book Enter Talking and and maybe going to another Restaurant Week lunch before the end date. February, please oh please don’t be as terrible as January.
If you’ve got any interest in reading last month’s roundup, you can see what went down in December over here!

What makes Coco Chocolate silky, smooth, and crunchy all at the same time!
The Final Report will cover the analysis of the Impact of Covid-19 on this industry.
Cocoa products are obtained from the manufacturing operations of raw cocoa beans that are distributed to the confectionery industries domestically and internationally. Fine-flavored cocoa accounts for around 5% of the world’s cocoa production, and is growing at a faster rate due to the expansion of premium chocolate products. Cocoa powder is used in the preparation of hot chocolate drinks, cakes, and other bakery products. Chocolate, on the other hand, is valued as a special drink as well as taken as a medicine. Drinkable chocolate has been in use for years to treat sicknesses and illnesses. Cocoa contains antioxidants that offer many health benefits – they lower blood pressure, improve heart health, improve blood flow, improve cholesterol levels, and help fight obesity, constipation, bronchial asthma, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, and various neurodegenerative diseases. The antioxidant concentration in hot cocoa is approximately two times stronger than red wine, two to three times stronger than green tea, and four to five times stronger than black tea. Chocolate bar has strong antioxidant properties, but its health benefits are outweighed due to the presence of saturated fats.

According to this latest study , Cocoa & Chocolate market was valued at USD 50.44 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach USD 75.80 billion by the year 2026, at a CAGR of 6.05%.

<HOLLYS COFFEE>
Thurs. Oct. 5th @ 10:05am.
I was close to 1.5 hrs ahead of my schedule bcos of the temporary holiday closure of the Yonsei University Museum. Meanwhile I don’t “time” my trip precisely, I have a good idea about where I should be at what time bcos I plan around my meals. For most non-food things, I look at the operating hrs (specifically museums) & everything else, I fill in by “area”, or ease of access via subway. That’s how I plan my trips & it works great for me! Regarding museums, if possible, I like to go 1st thing in the morning to avoid crowds.
Tumblr media
Anyways, after the Yonsei Univ. walk, I came back to the main Sinchon street, & noticed that at 10:00am, most stores were still closed, & the street was still pretty quiet, with hardly any ppl. So I decided to stop at Hollys Coffee for a morning coffee. 1st time going into a multi-level franchise café!
Tumblr media
The view on my right after I entered the café. There was a poster of their latest item, & to its left, there was a small shelf/display area with their merch & coffee beans for purchase.
Tumblr media
The “morning set” & “all day brunch” caught my attention haha The morning set, which lasts from 7-11am, consisting of a pastry & regular coffee (pastry or bagel according to the photo), costs 5000w. That is equivalent to approx. $6CAD. They have refill service & bring-your-own-cup discount as well.
Tumblr media
Muffins on top (3300w each, ~$3.90CAD) & cakes on the bottom, prices ranging from 5300-5800w (<$6.50CAD).
Tumblr media
Mascarpone tiramisu // cookies & cheese.
Tumblr media
There have 1 poster for pretty much each type of drink they serve.
#1. Expresso (Americano, mocha, latte, cappuccino, plus a few of their specialty expresso drinks). 3600-5900w for regular size, 4100-6400w for grande.
#2 top. Brewed coffee. Tea lattes are under this category; they were the priciest items 5900w reg./6400w grande.
#2 bottom. Latte chocolate. Sweet potato latte what?!?! I didn’t try it bcos I don’t prefer lattes all that much. But sweet potato latte is interesting!
[middle: picture of their “fraps”, aka Hollyccinos]
#3 Hollyccinos. I love menu reading at places for many reasons, such as inspiration for my own cooking experiments, pure interest & curiosity, & allows me to compare among different places. Here, they have strawberry & double berry cheese cake Hollyccino :O I wonder what that is. .. Their fruity concoctions are also under this category - the one that caught my eye was the yuzu crush. A close 2nd was the smoothie of the day consisting of beet, apple, & ginger (omg I would not want to try that at all).
#4 Sparkling & tea. This menu contained sodas & hot/iced teas of all sorts. While yuzu is a popular flavour here (& all of East Asia) that frequents café menus, they have western teas as well, such as peppermint tea & the classic earl grey.
Tumblr media
However, my heart belongs to Americano. Black Americano (hot or cold).
Tumblr media
I went with the iced version. It was ok; I don’t really know how to grade/rate Americanos. From personal experience, I’ve tried ones that were bitter & others that were less bitter & more on the sour side - I prefer the strong, dark, bitter type. I wouldn’t say this one here was of this nature but it wasn’t bad.
Tumblr media
I sat for a bit, charging my phone at the same time, on the main floor by the window. Then before I left, I went upstairs to the 2nd & 3rd floor to see what it was like. The observation of these books made me realize how different the coffeeshop culture is in Korea vs Edmonton (or most of Canada, I want to say).
In Edmonton (/Canada), generally speaking, coffeeshops are places for a social gathering, whether it’s a small group, a date, or a bff catch-up session. Most ppl are not by themselves. If you randomly walk into a coffeeshop in Edmonton, you’ll find that it’s very disproportionate; there are wayyyy more tables/seats with pairs or groups of ppl compared to ones with a single customer.
In Korea, it’s the opposite! “Support” might not be the best word but I definitely notice that there are many things inside eateries & coffeeshops (esp the latter) that are tailored towards individual customers. The more time I spend in Korea, the more I appreciate this gesture & culture. It’s not an uncommon sight in coffeeshops where individuals take up a whole 4-person table simply for reading a book, or doing tasks on an electronic device. For me, it almost feels welcoming bcos I’m also by myself. I like the fact that there are so many ppl like myself in the same setting, sharing the same space! Mind you, this place was obviously not busy but I’ve been to ones where each table was occupied & some were occupied by a single customer. I don’t “feel bad” for occupying a table for 4 by myself, even though there are more than enough empty tables around. In Edmonton, I try to pick the best smallest table as possible bcos I feel I shouldn’t “take up space”. The atmosphere is just so different. I think that if I had traveled with someone, I wouldn’t notice these acute observations & reflect on them.
Tumblr media
That being said, coffee culture in Korea is huge, & groups of ppl obviously visit cafes as well. It’s just that the ratio of groups vs individual customers vary widely, whereas in Edmonton, I find that it’s mostly groups.
Tumblr media
This is the 3rd floor. On every floor, there is a small “return” station that also includes a garbage, napkins, a short stack of paper cups, & cold water jug.
Tumblr media
Advertisement posters can be found in various areas inside the coffeeshop.
Tumblr media
Poor quality photo, but also on the 3rd floor - there was a long counter/bar counter with bar stools that allows customers to look down/across the street. Perfect for those who likes to look outside, see the sun, rain or snow :)

Tumblr media
Hi everyone! How has the first week of 2018 been for you? I’m back at work and although it’s been a little quieter than usual, it’s also been pretty busy. I feel like I’m still in vacation mode, and working has been a little less than productive. I’m off to Dallas next week though, so hopefully that helps me get back into the swing of things!
I’m still going through photos from my travels last year, so here’s a recap of my trip to Vancouver and Squamish last September. I was in town for a friend’s wedding and flew in a day early to spend some time in Vancouver before driving up to Squamish for the ceremony. Vancouver is by far one of my favourite cities in Canada, and I’m always looking for an excuse to go back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We stayed at The Westin in downtown Vancouver, and I absolutely loved our time there. The location is great for exploring downtown, with plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. We spent the first day eating (see below for what we ate!), walking around Gas Town, and visiting Queen Elizabeth Park and English Bay.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vancouver is known for its rain, and unfortunately it was raining on and off during our first day. It actually made the trip to Queen Elizabeth Park better though, because we were able to avoid the usual groups of tourists and had most of the gardens to ourselves. This park is beautiful to walk around in and has so many photo-worthy spots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can never go to Vancouver and not spend time by the water, so our last stop of the day was to English Bay. This is such a pretty spot to take in the view or relax on the beach. It was definitely too cold to go in the water, but we had the best time just walking around the boardwalk and enjoying the scenery.

Medina Cafe - This brunch spot is one of the highest rated and most popular in downtown Vancouver. We went close to when they opened for the day, and there was already a 30min wait! I can completely understand why though. The food was delicious, their drinks were good, and the staff was so nice and helpful. Worth the wait for sure.
Revolver - I love a good coffee shop, and Revolver had exactly the aesthetic and atmosphere that I love. It’s a pretty small spot, and the interior is all warm wood and dark accents - absolutely beautiful. Their coffee was also amazing.
Beta5 Chocolates - I saw this spot on Instagram, and really wanted to go because of the unique (and delicious) looking cream puffs. The store is actually located in an out of the way industrial area, so much so that I thought Google Maps had taken us to the wrong place when we first arrived! Their cream puffs are delicious though, and they have so many flavours to choose from.
Gene Coffee Bar - We stopped by at this popular little spot after visiting Beta5 Chocolates. My iced latte was so good, and I loved how open concept the space was. If I was still in school and needed a place to study, this would be it.
Shuraku Sake Bar - I can’t ever go to Vancouver and not eat sushi. Their fish is just so much cheaper and is better quality-wise than Toronto. Unfortunately though, I wasn’t a huge fan of this sushi spot. It was pretty affordable, but their sushi wasn’t really anything special for the price we paid. A+ for the presentation though (look at that sashimi!).
Belgard Kitchen - This is another spot that was located in a strange area (the entire block looked a little sketchy to be honest), but it was so good that the area didn’t even bother me. The restaurant is actually a combination of a brewery and restaurant in a shared space. The interior is beautifully designed, all of their food is farm to table, and their brunch menu was just amazing. Highly recommend checking it out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were off to Squamish for the wedding the next morning, and the drive was quite possibly one of the most beautiful I’ve seen in Vancouver so far. It was too foggy to get pictures, but on a nice day you can see the view of the ocean and mountains as you drive up.
Tumblr media
Wearing: Aritzia dress (on sale now but sold out in my exact style - some other similar options here and here), Zara sandals
Tumblr media
The venue the wedding was held in was breathtaking. It’s right on top of a mountain, and you need to take a 20min gondola ride to get up. The rain and mist made the mountains look even prettier, and it truly felt like you were on top of the world. The ceremony was so beautiful (I definitely cried), and we had such an amazing time there celebrating the new couple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our flight back to Vancouver was the next morning, but we made a quick stopover at Shannon Falls on the way back. We didn’t have enough time to hike up, but the view of the falls from the bottom was still beautiful. It’s definitely on my list of places to visit again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We wrapped up the trip with brunch at Fergie’s Cafe, which was the cutest outdoor restaurant. You can choose to sit on the deck attached to the main restaurant area, or on the picnic tables on the lawn. They had a great brunch menu, plus delicious pastries. I wasn’t expecting to find such a good brunch spot out in Squamish, but loved this one.
That wraps up my first travel diary of the year! Thanks for coming along to Vancouver and Squamish with me. More soon.

18 Must-Visit Attractions in Toronto
Tumblr media
What do a pair of Elton John's high heels, a Gothic castle as well as the globe's biggest hydraulophone share? They all function on this listing of the top tourist attractions in Toronto, Canada.
Some destinations in Toronto-- such as the skyline-busting CN Tower, the turrets of the Casa Loma and also the thunderous Niagara Falls down the road-- stand apart like Drake in the front row of the Scotiabank Sector. Nevertheless, others-- like the vendors of St Lawrence Market, the stores of the Distillery Area as well as the murals of Kensington Market-- take a little bit more exploration. Culture Journey has actually done the hard work for you by assembling the leading 18 attractions in Toronto you require to include in your schedule.
CN Tower
Leaving Toronto without scaling the city's most famous site would resemble visiting Paris as well as not bothering to see the Eiffel Tower. This trip gives a special perspective from the sharp end of the CN Tower, thanks to the stomach-churning glass flooring that looks overs the Toronto roads 1,122 feet (342 meters) below, in addition to the Hunt level and al fresco SkyTerrace staring out over Canada's most significant city. It leaves at 9am everyday from Nicholby's memento store on Front Street West for 150 Canadian dollars ($ 116.93).
Gallery of Impressions
If you're expecting your stock-standard hall of mirrors and a number of shrinking hallways, get ready for a shock. Toronto's Museum of Illusions is an extremely contemporary take on the old fairground funhouse-- a minimalist space that opened in 2018 with an Instagram front of mind. Found on Front Street East with tickets starting at 23.50 Canadian bucks ($ 17.93), the museum feels even more like an art gallery than some tacky carnival tourist attraction, with each item discussing the aesthetic hoax at play along with a pen explaining the best selfie area.
Ripley's Aquarium of Canada
With vicious tiger sharks, slippery eels, entrancing jellyfish and 450 various other types of unique aquatic life inhabiting the country's largest indoor aquarium, Ripley's Fish tank of Canada brings in substantial groups. While long lines snake around the block in the darkness of the CN Tower, you can avoid the line with this ticket for 49.80 Canadian bucks ($ 33.76). It's supplied directly to your smart device, and also the rate includes pet feedings and talks. Under the sea, easy.
Hockey Hall of Popularity
If hockey is a faith in Canada, after that this is the cathedral where the faithful come to prayer. Occupying Brookfield Place's historic Bank of Montreal building in the heart of midtown, the Hall of Fame flaunts the globe's largest collection of hockey artefacts, consisting of the original Stanley Cup locked away in the bank vault. Nevertheless, you don't need to be a hockey nerd to appreciate the reproduction NHL clothing space or the interactive video games-- as well as at 20 Canadian dollars ($ 15.59), admission is a bargain.
Distillery Area
Once home to the largest whiskey manufacturer in the British Empire, the cobbled alleyways of Toronto's Distillery District supply a flawlessly maintained time capsule of Victorian-era commercial design. This heaven of red-brick storehouses can be difficult to navigate for a first-timer, so leave it to an expert overview. On this one-hour tour for 23.73 Canadian dollars ($ 18.42), you'll stroll via the indie dining establishments, boutiques, bars, galleries and cinemas that make the Distillery District among The Six's coolest cultural districts. You'll additionally get to example some local craft beer and chocolate at the end. Yum.
Casa Loma
Seldom has a name fell short to record the grandeur of a place fairly like Casa Loma, which implies "Hillside Residence" in Spanish. An even more accurate title would've been "The extravagant Gothic castle plonked in the middle of Toronto," which just starts to explain the majesty of this 18th-century masterpiece just north of the bohemian Annex area. The royal residence of Sir Henry Pellatt eventually bankrupted the power tsar in the 1920s, although Casa Loma is a lot kinder on the purses of visitors than the man that developed it-- you can tip inside each day for simply 30 Canadian dollars ($ 22.89).
Royal Ontario Gallery (ROM).
Greater than 13 million artworks, social things and natural history samplings live under the ROM's jagged, ultra-modern roof covering ignoring Queen's Park in the city's north; on a busy day, it feels like there's practically the same variety of site visitors who have actually crowded in to see them. The good news is, you can get hold of a skip-the-line ticket for just 20 Canadian bucks ($ 15.32) and also access an exclusive share entrance point, giving you more time to look into the globe's biggest fossil collection, a colossal variety of dinosaur skeletons and also the largest event of Chinese architectural artefacts outside China.
Bata Shoe Museum.
While a gallery dedicated to footwear could seem around as amazing as a trip to a cardboard box manufacturing facility, the Bata Footwear Museum is just one of the quirkiest, coolest and also most compelling collections in all of Canada. Sitting simply down the block from the ROM in a building formed like a shoebox, this gallery steps (get it?) with the 4,500-year history of footwear, from indigenous boots put on in the Arctic to stylish sliver systems worn by Elton John. At 14 Canadian dollars ($ 10.89), it's also one of one of the most budget friendly destinations in Toronto.
Toronto Islands and Centreville.
Not all of Toronto's big-ticket items lie on dry land, as you'll figure out on this one-hour cruise ship of the harbor. For 26.55 Canadian dollars ($ 20.61) and departing from Queen's Quay Terminal-- southern of the city center-- this excursion takes in the shallows of the Toronto Islands, the nude beach at Hanlan's Factor, the glamorous Island Yacht Club as well as the serene wildlife haven, as well as the panoramic view across the water back towards The Six's soaring horizon. The Centreville Theme Park on Centre Island is an excellent stop for the children, as well.
St Lawrence Market.
A symbol of the Old Town area because the early 1800s, St Lawrence Market made the title of the world's leading grocery store from National Geographic in 2012. And also to taste the best of the 120 merchants that converge on this grand old industry, you require a little professional advice. For 89 Canadian bucks ($ 69.38), join your guide on a walk with a smorgasbord of St Lawrence's most mouthwatering specials, sinking your teeth right into every little thing from Indian candy and Ukrainian pierogi to Toronto's famous peameal bacon. Mmmmm, bacon.

Day 5
DAY 5…..Greece The First Time
Posted on June 1, 2012 by Key West Lou
I LOVE ATHENS!
What a city!
Arrived yesterday.
Lets begin with the flight from Milan to Athens.
Flew a German line. Aegean. Aegean is an affiliate/subsidiary of Lufthansa. The plane was a new airbus recently constructed by a French company. A big plane.
The trip takes only two hours. We flew south along the eastern coast of Italy. The rear side of the boot. Above the heel. Where the spur butts out. Then a left over the Aegean Sea.
The spur of Italy where we turned is the Puglia region. My mother was born in Puglia. In the town of Foggia. For whatever reason, I have felt my mother’s presence this entire trip. As the plane passed over Puglia, even more. She died more than 20 years ago.
The attendants are not referred to as such in this part of Europe. They are still stewardesses. Young. Not even thirty. No male stewards. It would appear age and sex discrimination are still alive in this part of the world.
The flight took all of two hours. Lunch was served. Yes, lunch. Not peanuts or pretzels. A terrific lunch.
Lunch consisted of two lamb sausages with vegetables. Cheese. Some terrific chocolate dessert. A very tasty cheese. Crackers.
Coffee at the end. In a real cup.
I had diet soda to drink. My glass was twice the size of one served in the United States. No ice. The soda cold. More soda for me.
And now the best, free alcohol. The woman next to me had a good sized bottle of red wine. The couple across from me cans of Heineken beer. Again, free.
My ticket cost $180 one way. I flew economy class.
Why the differences between a European flight and one in the United States?
A twenty mile cab ride to my hotel. I had selected a hotel close to the Parthenon so I could walk there each day.
The cab took me through old run down Athens. Much like a similar New York City neighborhood. Then the neighborhoods changed. All of a sudden I was on embassy row and the homes of ambassadors. Magnificent structures. All ancient Greek in style.
I wanted to engage the driver in conversation. He did not speak English. I did not speak Greek. I mentioned one word however that ignited him. He communicated effectively with me at that point. The word…..euro. He spun around to look at me. Yelled in his language what I suspect were profanities. Made it clear to me he was opposed to the euro, felt it had brought on Greece’s economic collapse. All this time he is driving looking at me. I understood he wanted a return to the old currency. The dracma.
He mentioned that Spain would be next to fall. He made it clear he did not like the Germans. They were economically sound while his country was going down the tubes. This economic problem was Germany’s fault. I suspect shades of World War II were still upon him. On the other hand, I found Italians were not happy with Germans either.
The driver appeared to be in his 60s.
Driving is crazy in Athens. Get out of the way! We were in the middle of Athens on a six lane highway going one way. The drivers were cutting each other off and cutting in front of each other. At excessive speeds.
Rather than fear the situation, I respected their abilities to drive so effectively. And without accident. At least I did not see one.
We drove past the Greek Parliament. An imposing building. Even more imposing was the plaza in front of the building. A concrete slab that appeared significantly larger than a football field. The place where demonstrations and riots took place. Such past activities could be sensed as you passed by.
We finally reached the hotel. I was excited. Supposedly a hop, skip and jump from Plaka. A place I was told was a fun area.
I checked in and headed for Plaka. Only two blocks away.
Plaka may be best described as a neighborhood. A big one. It sits at the foot of Acropolis. It is the oldest area in Athens. Sometimes  Plaka is refered to as the real Athens. Blocks and blocks of sidewalk cafes. Many inexpensive clothing and jewelry shops. Thousands of people. Yesterday, the day I was there. All ages. From all parts of the world. Enjoying themselves!
As opposed to Navaro, these people were smiling. Also they looked normal. Many overweight. Very few thin people.
I sat at one of the sidewalk cafes. Under a huge tree. Much like a Key West banyan tree.
Talking with people is easy here. I spoke with a table of Greek college students on one side. An Australian couple on the other. Everyone appears to love Americans. They were anxious to talk with me.
I found the preceding surprising. I was warned by many before the trip that Europeans in general dislike Americans. I don’t know what countries these people visited!
I walked a bit around the Plaka area. Came across some old ruins. Hadrian’s Library. Built in 132 AD by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Books were kept there. The building had reading rooms and lecture rooms, also. Sounds much like a 21st century library to me.
I was impressed with the use of the building. That libraries existed back then. I was also impressed with the construction. That which remained. Such precision in the workmanship. Each stone similarly cut and placed in perfect position. I thought, why not. The Egyptians did it with the pyramids well before Hadrian’s Library was constructed.
Plaka again is at the foot of a huge hill. A semi-mountain. Topside sits the Parthenon and Acropolis. Rising up the sides of the mountain are many outside cafes. It was past dinner time and I decided to try one.
The hill was steep. The stairs going up and down equally steep. People dining in outside cafes on each side of the steps.
Each restaurant had one or more persons working that I would describe as hustlers. They would stand on the steps and literally pull you into their restaurant.
I wanted to sit at the very top. It was a hard trip. I had to stop a couple of times and sit on a stoop to catch my breath. I finally made it. The hustler turned out to be from Canada. He was in his 60s. He told me his life’s story. His wife had divorced him after 40 years. I said don’t feel bad. My wife did it after fifty two years. He had recovered however from the misfortune. He now considered the divorce a fortuitous happening. He had met a younger woman. A Greek. Fell in love. Now lived in Greece full time with her.
The meal was only so so. I was disappointed. I had a lamb dish. The lamb was tough.
The strenuous walk up the steps was worth it. I could see all the way down and over the rooftops of Athens. It was dark and everything was lite up.
After dinner, I searched for some Greek music and dancing. I could find none. Perhaps it was too early. I did find a piano bar. Stopped inside. Stayed briefly. The entertainer was no Larry Smith.
Today it is my intention to go to the very top of the hill. By cab, I assume. The Parthenon and Acropolis await me.
I wanted to take pictures. I will before I am done. To share with you. I bought a new cell phone. I should not have. It is screwed up. By me. I cannot get it unscrewed. Cannot use it in any fashion.
At breakfast this morning, I met another couple from Australia. They had a tablet and offered it to me to write my blog. I knew it would take too long. As it turned out, I became totally frustrated with the learning process. My age was showing.
I am doing today’s blog from a second floor internet shop. About 40 computers available for rent by the hour. Cost is 3 euros an hour. That is about $4.20 American money. The way I type, it will take forever. My drinking money for today is being used up.
The room is large. Many people. Body heat and machine heat. No air conditioning. I will require another shower when I finish.
Enjoy your day! I am mine!
This mornings Citizens’ Voice had two especially interesting comments.
The first: “At the vaccine’s current availability rate of 600 doses a week, it will take through June just to vaccinate only those Monroe County residents 65 or older. Good luck!”
The other: “A Miami Herald article touted Key West as a ‘sort of lawless island.'”
The description offends me. And I am sure every Key West resident.
I have been in Key West in one fashion or another for 30 years. “A lawless island” is far from an accurate description. The rowdiness is limited to Duval Street. The haven visitors seek. They can get drunk, chase each other, and hopefully enjoy some illicit sex.
There is more to Key West than Duval. I have many times written or otherwise described Key West as a good place to live, raise children, etc.
Few residents go downtown. Not everyone is like me. I enjoy the Chart Room and the people I meet. I cannot recall the last time I might have drunk too much. Now, I rarely have a drink.
As to the sexes chasing each other, an extreme rarity if at all among residents. Residents are like family. See each other almost every night.
I am trying to think the last time a tourist chased me for sex. Has to have been a long time ago. No woman wants a man in his 80s. Then there is the problem the mind may be willing, but not the body.
On this day in 2015, Key West had 29 cigar factories, who employed 2,100 workers, who made 62,415,000 cigars, from imported Cuban tobacco.
Anne Ray is with the University of Miami’s Shimberg Center for Housing Studies. She said a most recent study indicated “Key West workers need to earn $33 an hour to afford Key West rents.”
I buy it. Rents are out of sight!
Key West has created a shortage of workforce housing.
No one cares, except for the working population. More and more leave Key West each year because they cannot afford to pay excessive rents and no longer wish to share a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 other people.
Mayor Johnston and the City Commission are aware of the problem. Everyone who lives or has lived in Key West understands it. Mayor Johnston and the Commission are into the problem and looking for how to make rents affordable. Even to the extent of hiring a full time Director of Housing to solely deal with the problem.
More than 50 House lawmakers want the new stimulus package to provide not for a one time $2,000 payment. Rather, $2,000 a month payments till the pandemic is behind the population.
The thought a wise and unwise one at the same time.
Wise in that those who need the money the most spend it swiftly. Such helps the economy. Everyone in effect is eating off the $2,000.
Unwise in that it might also break the bank – the U.S. economy. In addition unending payments might result in people not wanting to return to work if they can take in $2,000 a month without working.
Note the 50 plus Representatives want $2,000 per adult and each child.
My solution. Go for the $2,000 per month with a limit of 3 months. Then look at the problem again. If feasible, continue. If it has too many warts, do not renew.
One thing is certain in the U.S. Insanity prevails.
Two Ohio Republican members of the House of Representatives want a declaration calling for June 14 to be “President Donald J. Trump Day.” They are looking for co-sponsors to introduce the bill.
Two Louis thoughts.
Trump is not a Washington or Lincoln. He does not deserve such recognition.
The other is I was under the impression that naming a day after a person first required the person to be dead. If such is the case, we will have to wait to another time before the issue can be entertained.
Enjoy your day!

The Philadelphia Hit List The Best New Restaurants In Philadelphia added to Google Docs
The Philadelphia Hit List The Best New Restaurants In Philadelphia
Wondering where you should be eating in Philadelphia right now? You’re in the right place. The Infatuation Hit List is your guide to the city’s best new restaurants.
And when we say “best new restaurants,” we mean it. Because we’ve vetted every single one of these places - and we’ve also left off countless spots that simply aren’t as worthy of your time and paycheck.
The Hit List is our record of every restaurant that’s opened in the past year that we’d highly recommend you try. It’s also sorted chronologically, so you’ll find the newest spots at the top, and as you keep scrolling you’ll find the places that are on the older side - but are great enough that we still haven’t stopped talking about them.
New to The Hit List (as of 3/6/20): Porcos, St. Oner’s, and Laser Wolf.
the spots  Michael Persico Laser Wolf $ $ $ $ Middle Eastern  in  Kensington $$$$ 1301 N Howard St Not

Good luck getting a reservation at Laser Wolf, an Israeli grill in Kensington from the team behind Zahav. There’s so much hype around this spot that if you don’t have a reservation yet, you probably won’t get one until Winter 2022. What you should do, though, is show up before they open at 5pm and you can get a seat at the bar pretty easily. Then you can enjoy what every dinner at Laser Wolf includes - around a dozen small vegetable-based salads as well as pita and hummus. If you want, for $18, you could make a full meal out of an unlimited amount of fluffy pita and dips like kale babaganoush and sweet potato muhammara. Without getting anything else, it’s perfect for a first date or casual weeknight dinner. When you start ordering the meats on the menu, especially the bigger ones like an entire branzino filled with ginger, pineapple, and lemon for $88 - it can start adding up pretty quickly. Save that for a birthday, invite all your friends, and make them split everything with you at one of their big, colorful tables in their open-air market-esque space.
St. Oner’s $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Chinese  in  Fishtown $$$$ 2213 Frankford Ave Not

You probably already know about Tired Hands - a brewery based out of Ardmore - because of their popular frothy milkshake IPAs, or because you’ve been to the Tired Hands Biergarten. Right across the street from their seasonal beer garden in Fishtown is St. Oners, their tiny new bar and restaurant with a full menu of Chinese food ranging from small plates like salt and pepper wings to big bowls of rice and noodle dishes. But the best thing you can eat here is the beef neck and broccoli - the meat is so tender it’s practically falling apart. St. Oners also has a bunch of the beers from Tired Hands on tap (you can buy four-packs of their cans to go too), as well as a few great cocktails - like one with aquavit, sparkling rosé, and lemongrass.
 Porcos $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Cafe/Bakery  in  Point Breeze ,  South Philly $$$$ 2204 Washington Ave Not

The slow-roasted porchetta sandwich from Porcos is one of the best things you can eat in Philadelphia right now. We realize that’s a big statement, but we believe it as much as we know that the world is round, or that Ryan Gosling is too attractive to actually be from Canada. The pork is tender and salty, and comes served on crispy, housemade ciabatta. The menu at the small Washington Avenue bakery is mostly variations on the porchetta sandwich, with standouts like a Cubano with pickled vegetables and the “Spicy Porker” with a long hot relish. The space also has a big case of baked goods which are all solid (especially the chocolate chip cookie sandwich), but you’re here for the meat.
 Via Locusta $ $ $ $ Pasta ,  Italian  in  Rittenhouse $$$$ 1723 Locust St Not
Rated
Yet
There’s one pasta dish on the menu at Via Locusta that you’re supposed to eat with your hands. It could have been annoying and gimmicky, but the porcini and black truffle agnolotti that come with a cream-based dipping sauce are just too damn good to hate. The rest of the menu is just as good too, from fluffy focaccia with sweet and salty honey butter, to romanesco fritto in a pool of creamy goat cheese. And even though Via Locusta is run by the same team that brought us Double Knot, Giuseppe & Sons, Osteria, and about 15 other restaurants, this one feels different. It’s the kind of place where you want to hang out after work or bring a first date to - especially to have some cocktails and pasta at the black-and-gold bar.
Hello Vietnam $ $ $ $ Vietnamese  in  Northern Liberties $$$$ 722 N 2nd St Not
Rated
Yet
The prequel to Hello Vietnam was a place called Nam Son Bakery - a South Philly spot with maybe the best banh mi sandwich in the city. When that closed in 2019, the owners opened Hello Vietnam in Northern Liberties with the same incredible banh mis on bread that’s baked in-house. But they now also have a full dinner service. The BYOB has a short but excellent menu that ranges from appetizers like grilled beef wrapped in grape leaves, broken rice plates, and huge bowls of pho for around $12. You could definitely come here for a weeknight date, but it would still work for your weekly “book club” meet up that’s really just an excuse to talk about the latest episode of Temptation Island.
Michael Persico Merkaz $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Middle Eastern  in  Center City ,  Midtown Village $$$$ 1218 Sansom St Not
Rated
Yet
You might think that the people behind Zahav have enough fast-casual places already - with locations of Dizengoff, Goldie, and Federal Donuts all over the city. But then they opened up a pita sandwich shop in Center City, and we regret thinking they could overdo it. Merkaz, like Dizengoff and Goldie, does Israeli street food. But instead of focusing on hummus or falafel, Merkaz serves breakfast every morning, with things like shakshuka and za’atar toast, and then moves on to pita sandwiches and Israeli sodas for lunch. They don’t really do dinner, but they stay open until 7pm, and you can get a whole roast cauliflower or chicken to take home. Because it’s in the middle of all the office buildings, lines get very long at lunchtime. Come around 2pm for a late lunch, though, and you’ll be able to get a crispy eggplant sabich or Jerusalem grill with chicken hearts in warm, fluffy pita in just a few minutes.
Cicala $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Spring Garden $$$$ 699 N Broad St Not
Rated
Yet
If you’ve ever tried to eat dinner near The Met before a show, then you know your options are pretty limited. But Cicala, a new Italian restaurant at the recently renovated Divine Lorraine Hotel, is a new pre-show option to add to your list. In the dining room, a bunch of crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling and occasionally flicker - we’re pretty sure this place is haunted. The menu here is, broken down into antipasti, pastas, and large entrees for the table to share. If you’re with a big group, definitely start by splitting the affettato misto, which comes with a big salumi plate and assorted vegetable salads. But no matter who you’re here with, you’ll want to get a couple pastas - especially the fazzoletti with lamb shoulder ragu and the maccheroni al ferro.
 Le Caveau $ $ $ $ French ,  Wine Bar  in  Queen Village $$$$ 614 S 7th St Not
Rated
Yet
Everything about Le Caveau feels cool. It’s the wine bar you’ve always wanted in your neighborhood - where you can walk in unannounced on a Thursday night with a date and immediately impress them just by knowing it exists. The dark, moody spot sits right above another of our favorite places, The Good King Tavern, and is like it’s sophisticated, cigarette-smoking sister who only dates older Italian men. Their wine list is primarily made up of natural bottles and is divided between “France” and “Not France.” There’s also a short menu of bar snacks with things like a hot dog wrapped in a baguette and salted chocolate mousse. You could probably order enough food to make a full dinner, but you should be coming here more for the wine and to feel like you’re cooler than you actually are.
Gigi Pizza $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  Queen Village $$$$ 504 Bainbridge St 8.0 /10
After being America’s favorite food for hundreds of years, Philadelphia finally figured out how to make pizza. And now we have more great pies than we know how to handle. Gigi is yet another addition to the growing number of Philly pizza shops, and it’s really good. This 12-seat spot connected to Olly in Queen Village makes Neapolitan pies, and they’re super light, thin, and crispy. Because they’re so thin, you can probably eat a whole one yourself, but you should share it just to save some room for dessert. There’s a cannoli dip served with cinnamon-sugar pizza crust that we haven’t stopped thinking about since we walked out the door.
 Emmy Squared $ $ $ $ American ,  Burgers ,  Pizza  in  Queen Village $$$$ 632 S 5th St Not
Rated
Yet
Emmy Squared, a pizza place that started in New York, has a new location in Queen Village. They focus on crispy Detroit-style pan pizza, with options like a margarita with piles of creamy burrata and one with white barbeque sauce and Nashville hot chicken. Arguably the best thing on the menu, though, is the “Le Big Matt” burger. It’s a double patty with American cheese, pickles, and something called “sammy sauce,” and it’s already one of our favorite burgers in the entire city.
 Condesa $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Center City ,  Logan Square $$$$ 1830 Ludlow St. 8.6 /10
Condesa is the best Mexican place to open in Philadelphia in a long time. It’s located in the lobby of the new Pod hotel in Center City, but it doesn’t feel like you’re in a hotel when you’re in the restaurant. There’s a huge bar in the middle of the room along with a big space outside that has a bunch of pillowy lounge seating. Almost all of the dishes on the menu are made with house-ground masa from Mexico, from the lamb tacos to a chocolate masa cake. A very small portion of guacamole does costs $16 (save your money for the fluke ceviche tostada instead), but this is somewhere you need to check out.
 Alimentari $ $ $ $ Wine Bar  in  Center City $$$$ 1730 Chestnut St 7.6 /10
You might not think a wine bar that’s above a grocery store would be a great spot. But Alimentari, which takes up the top floor of Di Bruno Bros, isn’t like the beer halls you’ll find inside of Whole Foods or Giant. It’s a real restaurant with many different types of charcuterie boards and a wine list that uses descriptions like “weirdly fantastic” and “best buds with pizza” to describe their options. While the focus is on wine and charcuterie, there are also some excellent small plates and square Roman pizza slices here that you should add on to your order. It’s essentially like having friends over for wine and cheese but getting someone else to do all the work and not having to do the dishes afterward.
Rachel Lerro June Byob $ $ $ $ French  in  East Passyunk $$$$ 1911 E Passyunk Ave Not
Rated
Yet
June BYOB is a tiny French restaurant that took over the old Will BYOB space on East Passyunk. Like its former resident, it only has about 10 tables, most of which are two-tops filled with people splitting a bottle of wine from The Bottle Shop down the street. The menu is pretty short and split up between appetizers - like seared scallops in a grapefruit vinaigrette - and bigger plates like a roasted cod and a $42 trio of duck that’s especially excellent. Come here when you have something important to celebrate, like finding a hidden treasure map on the El.
 Forsythia $ $ $ $ French  in  Old City $$$$ 233 Chestnut St Not
Rated
Yet
We were very unhappy when Will BYOB, a French restaurant on East Passyunk, closed a few months back. But they already have a new place in Old City called Forsythia, which has quickly become a great neighborhood spot. Unlike Will, though, they’re not a BYOB - they have a long bar that’s constantly filled with people drinking cocktails or splitting a bottle from their great natural wine list. As far as the food goes, the menu is a la carte with mostly small plates like corn and ham hock beignets and mussels escabeche. For dessert, it’s necessary to order the two-tiered tower with a bunch of different sweets like raspberry macarons, coffee and coconut pots de creme, and more.
 Vernick Fish $ $ $ $ American ,  Seafood  in  Center City $$$$ 1876 Arch St 8.5 /10
Vernick Fish is an enormous, gorgeous restaurant on the ground floor of the newest Comcast Tower that comes from the people behind Vernick Food & Drink. As the name suggests, the menu has a lot of seafood and raw dishes, like oysters, tartare, and sashimi. All of the raw stuff is good but make sure to get the excellent plate of fluke sashimi covered in a brown butter vinaigrette and shaved hazelnuts. The rest of the menu is made of up smaller dishes to share, like a tangy squid pad thai salad, and larger things like grilled branzino and a whole Dover sole. There’s even a small “not fish” section in case, for some reason, you came to a seafood restaurant but don’t want anything from the ocean.
Messina Club $ $ $ $ American ,  Middle Eastern  in  East Passyunk $$$$ 10th street Not
Rated
Yet
When Messina opened right across the street from Palizzi Social Club, we were skeptical. Do we really need another members-only dining club in Philly? And is this one just going to be a rip-off of one of our favorite Italian places in the city? While, no, we probably didn’t need another members-only spot, this one is entirely different from Palizzi - in a good way. For one, the food isn’t Italian. It’s a mash-up of different cuisines, from honey-glazed wings and Spanish octopus to the best pierogies we’ve ever had. It also feels different inside. Instead of the old school portraits on the walls and the low-drop ceilings you’ll find at Palizzi, Messina feels more modern with a neon “Don’t Be A Dick” sign on display as soon as you walk through the door. Most importantly, though, it’s convinced us that there’s room for two excellent social clubs in the same neighborhood.
 Michael Persico K'Far $ $ $ $ Middle Eastern ,  Cafe/Bakery  in  Rittenhouse $$$$ 110 S 19th St 8.6 /10
K’far, the new all-day Israeli bakery from the people behind Zahav, is pretty. Almost too pretty, to the point where you might wonder if the food is any good or if all the gold piping and marble tabletops are just a ruse to lure people in. But fortunately, K’far backs up its boutique-hotel aesthetic with some really incredible pastries, grain bowls, and kubaneh toasts on thick, buttery bread. You’ll have to get there early, like before 11am, if you want to get a chocolate babka or walnut sticky bun before they sell out. Right now, they’re only open until 2pm, but once they roll out their dinner menu, you’ll be able to order things like Turkish stuffed eggplant and take full advantage of their huge bar.
 Elwood $ $ $ $ American  in  Fishtown $$$$ 1007 Frankford Ave Not
Rated
Yet
Elwood is a meat-heavy Pennsylvania-Dutch-inspired spot on Girard in Fishtown. Eating here kind of feels like going on a second-grade field trip to the Constitution Center or Liberty Bell. Everything on the menu, from the ham potpie to the spelt dumplings for dessert, has a history lesson attached - lessons you’ll probably hear about from the chef or your server throughout the meal. Even the space itself, which has original paintings from the 1800s and antique silverware collected by the chef, makes you feel like you’re in a museum. The whole experience can feel a bit strange at first, but the food is so good that you’ll be happy you took a field trip out here.
 Matthew Williams Hiroki $ $ $ $ Japanese ,  Sushi  in  Fishtown $$$$ 1355 N Front St 8.7 /10
Hiroki is the new, omakase-only spot from the people behind the Fishtown Italian restaurant Wm. Mulherin’s Sons, and it’s located around the corner in the alley behind it. The restaurant feels like you’re walking into a wine cellar - the barrel-shaped door leads into a small, dark room that’s almost entirely taken up by the sushi counter. There are a few tables as well, but you want to be at the counter, where where you’ll get everything piece-by-piece straight from the sushi chef. Every meal starts with a small tray of appetizers, and then moves through things like soy-marinated wagyu short rib and crispy tilefish, followed by about 12 pieces of sushi, a cup of miso soup, and a small dessert. By the end of the meal, you’ll start to think up reasons to justify coming back as soon as possible.
Circles + Squares $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  Olde Richmond $$$$ 2513 Tulip St 8.5 /10
Remember Pizza Gutt? The place that sold 70 or so pies a night out of the back of a Spring Garden coffee shop? Well they finally opened their own shop in Kensington (where Lil Lina’s used to be), and in addition to serving their signature square-pan pizzas, they’re also making traditional, thin-crust circle ones. The place is constantly swamped with people, so you’ll have to get there at around 5pm and wait an hour or so if you want to get a pizza before they sell out (which they do every night by around 7pm). But it’s worth the wait, especially for the pan pizzas - they’re crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and just as good when heated up the next day.
 Kalaya Thai Kitchen $ $ $ $ Thai  in  Bella Vista $$$$ 764 S 9th St 8.7 /10
Kalaya makes the best Thai food in Philly right now. We realize that’s a bold statement, but this Bella Vista BYOB has an incredible menu - filled with things like bright blue tapioca dumplings and spicy curries. You’ll also want to hang out often in the loud, busy dining room and bring a bunch of friends and bottles of wine. We’re not sure what Philly will look like ten years from now, but we’re pretty sure this place will still be here, and we’ll still be coming around often.
 Olly $ $ $ $ American ,  Bar Food  in  Queen Village $$$$ 700 S 5th St 7.4 /10
Olly is part casual sports bar, part restaurant that you’d go to with your parents. It’s located on the corner of South 4th in Queen Village and, on a nice night, they fill up the sidewalk with a ton of two-tops. The bar has a bunch of TVs, so instead of eating frozen mozzarella sticks while you watch the Eagles, you can order spice-rubbed wings with an herbed yogurt dipping sauce or English pea toast and burrata on sourdough toast. Come for brunch on the weekends and get peanut butter blintzes and potato and chard frittatas while you watch an English Premier League soccer game.
 Alpen Rose $ $ $ $ American ,  Steaks  in  Center City ,  Midtown Village $$$$ 118 S 13th St 8.2 /10
Most steakhouses are huge, cavernous halls with two-story ceilings and tons of big round tables. Alpen Rose is not that. It’s a small, 15-table, all-wood room that looks like either the inside of a treasure chest or the personal library of a retired Harvard professor, and it’s full of expensive-looking paintings in ornate frames. Alpen Rose has a pretty standard steakhouse menu, divided between appetizers, sides, and dry-aged steaks. Red meat is definitely the focus here, and it’s all sliced tableside while you watch like a Golden Retriever who hasn’t eaten since breakfast. If you want something a little more interesting, the bone marrow toast and beef tongue are both solid options.
 Kerry McIntyre Pizzeria Beddia $ $ $ $ Pizza ,  Wine Bar  in  Fishtown $$$$ 1313 N Lee Street 9.0 /10
Ever since Beddia 1.0 on Girard closed last year to “reinvent itself,” everyone from your landlord to the mayor has been waiting for the second coming. It’s finally arrived in a Fishtown alley with a little green neon sign out front, and it’s much bigger than it used to be, with three high-ceilinged rooms painted all white and filled with minimal light-wood furniture. And it also has more than just pizza. Besides a few different pies (which, yes, are just as good as they’ve always been), there’s a long natural wine list, a few starters, and a daily selection of soft serve that you can - and should - take to-go, even if you’re not staying for a full meal.
