I wrote a silly little bionicle fanfic I wanted to post here
Quick info on some headcanon I integrated. The Agori and glatorian are not as old in here and are descendants of the ones that fought the core war, rather than participants.
There isn’t really action in here and basically my first attempt at writing
Anyways. I wanted to call this little project "Tales of Spherus Magna"
Chapter 1
Vakama
“We do not wish for any sort of conflict.” Vakama, the wise Turaga of fire declared. His voice, despite being as calm as could be, shows hints of exhaustion. Exhaustion, that is more apparent in the eyes peeking from behind his Huna, the mask of concealment.
The past weeks weighed on the Turaga. After all that was happening to his people, the loss of their home, the silence of the great spirit they were so faithfully serving and the integration on a world which even he and the rest of the Turaga know nothing about, he could not stop working to lead the Matoran, that have put their trust in him, into a peaceful tomorrow.
“Be that as it may…” one of the six beings opposite to him begins. A figure, clad in red armor very similar to the Ta-Matoran of his tribe, yet unlike how his people were intertwined with their protodermis shell like bark to a tree, this being was merely covering up his vulnerable body, consisting entirely of the ‘living matter’.
Something ached in Vakama‘s heart light when gazing upon this being. Their first contact was a strange experience for both sides. At first they have thought of them as a strange evolutionary branch, but the more he learned, the more a horrible thought took its grotesque roots in his mind.
“We are merely mockeries of life. Imitations that only simulate what it is to be real people”
This intrusive thought makes it hard for Vakama to not avert his gaze in shame from the being, this Agori, but he mustn’t.
The Agori continues: “It is your kind that has brought all of these… all of these monsters to our world! It was this Mata Nui who might have returned Bara Magna to what it was, but is it really better with your creatures around?” He crosses his arms as he leans back into his chair. Vakama wanted to protest, but Nokama, the Turaga of water who was sitting next to him, placed her gentle hand on his shoulder and began to speak in a calm tone. “Please understand It was beyond our control, o wise leader of the fire tribe. We, the people of the Matoran universe, will do our very best to assure a secure unification of our two civilizations and help with any invasive species that may cause trouble” She nodded to Vakama, who nodded back with a glimmer of joy in his eyes, knowing that she and Whenua to his other side where there for him.
“Unification? What is there to ‘unite’?” A cold voice asked slowly. It was the Agori next to the leader of the fire tribe. One who’s snow white armor perfectly reflects the tone of her voice. “For all that we know, these… things were made by the great beings to serve our ancestors. So by proxy, they should now serve us.”
She continued, her cruel words instantly draining any positivity out of Vakama‘s spirit.
“You can’t be serious, Mivera.” Someone else protested. Very similar to a Toa of fire in appearance, he was one of the three beings in the hut known as Glatorian. “Mata Nui is my friend. We helped him save his people and you want to enslave them? Raanu, you can't possibly consider that?“ he turned to the fire tribe leader who was shaking his head. “He might have helped us, Ackar, but Mata Nui never told us that his people are… are Robots!”
Tahu, Toa of fire, who was standing behind his Turaga the whole time, was losing patience and urged to give them a piece of his mind, but surprisingly enough and before Gali and Onua, his Toa siblings, could intervene, a younger voice came from the side of the Agori and Glatorian.
“This is how you want to thank Mata Nui?! I can’t believe you’re considering it for even a second! They’re not just robots! Can’t you see that, Raanu?”
Annoyed at the Glatorian in green armor, Raanu shook his head. “Who of you decided to bring along this brat?” He asked dismissively upon which the last of the three Glatorian responded. “Well, unlike you and the Iconox witch, Gresh has a heart!”
“Tsk watch your mouth, Kiina!” Mivera hisses at the blue armored Glatorian.
In all of this, Berix, an Agori in blue armor and from the same tribe as the Glatorian Kiina, who sat between the two arguing parties, hastily wrote all of it down in his notebook. Mata Nui made him what is called a ‘chronicler’ and he tries to honor that title to the best of his abilities. Next to him sat another white armored figure. One of those Matoran, the Turaga claim to be the leaders of. Unlike Berix, who could barely sit still, this Matoran calmly noted everything down on a slab of stone strangely enough. Berix couldn’t help but wonder why anyone would write down on stone of all things. The symbols the matoran writes on the Tablet are strange but not entirely unfamiliar. He shakes his head. He can’t allow himself to be distracted like that while he has a job to do. “Ugh, why me? This guy is way more competent than I am..” he thought to himself defeated.
The table they were all sitting at was round. A beautiful, silver shield that once belonged to a great protector of Metru Nui was serving the Turaga as a conference table in many discussions.
Vakama places his hands on its smooth surface and closes his eyes for a moment. They may be pale imitations, but they were still people. Living, breathing organisms. To be compared to the likes of the Vahki, who mercilessly and mindlessly follow their programs filled even him with anger. He inhaled, still feeling Nokama‘s comforting hand on his shoulder and now even Whenua, who has been listening in silence, reaches for his old comrade. “We have our history, Vakama. The culture we build in all these many centuries is proof that we’re alive and real people”
As if the Ruru, the mask of night vision, that Whenua wore was able to see right through Vakama‘s darkest thoughts, his friend said exactly what Vakama needed to hear.
He exhales. “We wish for there to be no conflict. But I have a duty to protect the Matoran. If one sees them as nothing more than mindless machines, I see this as an insult not just to us, but the great spirit, Mata Nui. If you truly wish to force your wills upon us… we will defend ourselves.” He stated stouthearted, the oath he once gave Lhikan never leaving his mind.
Raanu looked down in thoughts, leaning forward and tapping his fingers on the silver table. He can not afford conflict. Especially with beings as powerful as those behind these Turaga. But he knew of the great beings. How they brought this planet to ruins. And now he is supposed to trust their creations to not do it again?
“Raanu!” The three Glatorian shout at him at the same time, all of them appalled by the fact that the leader of the fire tribe ponders this, for them a very easily solved predicament.
“We-” the leader of the ice tribe attempted to gain control of the discussion but quickly fell silent as the third Agori leader raised his voice. On Raanu‘s left, the oldest of the leaders, the leader of the twin villages of Tesara spoke up. His tone, strained and withered and his green, rusty armor creaks as he moves in his chair.
“It has… been a dream of mine… in these many many ages that I spent surviving… to see the lush forests of the old world as described in the very few remaining texts of my village… and to see it now, I can say with confidence that the patch of green we had in Tesara, our beautiful home… pales in comparison. And it is all thanks to your great spirit.” He lifted his shaking arm towards the Turaga in a gesture of gratitude. “I would be… overjoyed to live together with them.” He then declares, talking to Gresh who took a knee right next to the old Agori leader’s chair. Gresh smiled. “Yes, wise Dekku.” He pets the young Glatorian he always viewed as a grandson, on the shoulder. He exhales, exhausted from merely speaking these few words. If it was not for his insistent request, he wouldn’t even sit at this very table, yet his words definitely seem to soften the thoughts of the others. Except for one… the leader of the ice tribe moves closer to Raanu and starts speaking to him in a more hushed tone. “Raanu, can’t you see the danger these machines pretending to have free will possess? If they refuse to serve their proper masters, they-” again she was cut off. The fire tribe leader moves his hand between their faces. “Enough, Mivera. Turaga Vakama, we have decided” As he stands up, he looks directly at the six former Metru Nui inhabitants.
“I see a possible future of us living together, but… for now I believe we should minimize unnecessary contact until we have fully regrouped as tribes.“
The Turaga looked at his peers and they all nodded at each other. “Very well. This is perhaps the best possible outcome we could have hoped for. I wish you farewell.”
They shook hands, which was a new experience to the Turaga, who at first was not sure what to do with the hand offered. Berix awkwardly attempted to converse with the other Chronicler, but more than his name he could not get out of the quiet matoran called Kopeke.
After the Agori and Glatorian left the hut and a last icy glare of the Iconox leader, Vakama let out a big sigh, his head falling into his hand in exhaustion.
“Tsk… who does she think she is?” Tahu snarled, remembering the disgusting words of one of the Agori.
“Does that really matter now? It’s over, Tahu. No need to get worked up over nothing” Gali said, putting her hand on his shoulder in a similar fashion to the Turaga.
Onua, who is one of the most composed Toa, is in thoughts. Perhaps the great beings did create them to serve the Agori in the end. Very much like Tahu, this bothered him, yet he decided to not make his complaints known.
“I wish the others were here…” Nokama states in a saddened voice. She knows fully well that Onewa and Nuju were against living together with the Agori. Even Turaga Dume, who most saw as the de facto leader of the Turaga council, spoke up against it.
She knows that Matau would have supported her wholeheartedly, but he felt as tho he would not have been a good negotiator. An excuse, since he surely thought of this ordeal as boring.
The Toa and Turaga stepped outside, Vakama not feeling any of the burdens leaving his shoulders.
“You let these pathetic creatures walk off after saying all this?”
The voice sent a shiver down Vakama‘s and the other Turaga‘s back.
At the side of the Hut leans a Toa of water against its wall. The red, glowing eyes glare at the Turaga of fire from behind her scratched and chipped mask.
“If I was in charge, I would have-”
“You are not in charge, Tuyet.“ Vakama cut her off, not caring that he was talking to this murderous renegade, looking her in the eyes with the same intensity, occasionally looking at the stump where her right arm was supposed to be. The Toa, despite knowing the Turaga‘s bravery, were surprised by his sharp tone.
“You better watch your mouth, Turaga. I might have been injured, but I could still destroy all of you with ease.” Tahu steps in front of his Turaga, grabbing his magma swords. “We will see about that, traitor”
“Do me a favor and put this Ussal brain on a leash”
Tuyet said mockingly, enraging Tahu, who had to be held back by his siblings before another fight in the village could break out.
“Surely you did not come here just to lecture and insult us with your foul mouth, exile. What is it that you seek?“ Whenua deduces.
“Where. Is. He?”
Done playing around, Tuyet demanded an answer, the Nui stone fused with her armor glowing menacingly.
“He went north,” Vakama replied. He knew what she wanted and gave her a quick answer. “We can not give you a better direction.” He added.
“It’s enough… for now” she said, turning away from them and heading north without another word uttered. “I swear, today is the gathering of unpleasant people…” Onua claims, trying to lighten the mood a little, but Vakama looks defeated at the horizon.
“Do we also count as such?” A Voice all too familiar came from behind Vakama, who was turning around as quickly as his frame allowed him. “Onewa… Nuju and Matau…”
“We worry-feared if you could manage the negotiation-talk without us, brother. So we decided to quick-travel here as fast as our feet allowed us.”
Vakama‘s expression softened once more. So is Nokama‘s. Meanwhile Whenua crosses his arms. “You left him to fend for himself and now you’re late.” Clicks and whistles that sounded like a protest came from Turaga Nuju as he pointed at Matau. “Hey it is not my fault we took so long-time. It was the stone head that needed convince-talk”
Onewa shook his head but did not defend himself, meaning it was true and he hated to admit it.
“Vakama… perhaps you were right to try and establish contact as soon as you did. Perhaps we have been idle too many times and I have become used to it…” to hear these words from Onewa, the most unbudging, unapologetic Turaga of them all, shocked Vakama and the others. He continues “We are Brothers still. Our strength is in our unity.“ Nokama takes Vakama‘s hand and leads him towards the others together with Whenua. “And United we will face this new world. You are not bearing this responsibility alone, brother. We will always be there for you”
Moved by this, Vakama could not bring out a word. The storyteller has lost his voice to sentimentalities and failed to reclaim it, instead accepting the embrace of his fellow Turaga.
“I wish Pohatu, Lewa and Kopaka were here…” Onua said, touched by this display. Tahu wraps his arm around his neck and smiles, raising his fist to bump with Onua‘s and afterwards with Gali‘s.

Random AU Idea
So I had an AU pop into my head out of random
So we know the first fight the Toa Mata had against Teridax?
What if, and here me out
Mata Nui showed up in his Toa form, still obviously drained af and injured from the forced coma
Helping the Toa Mata fight Teridax
And he just joins the adventures until he whole Ignika arc when he gets sent to Bara Magna
Could I use this with Mata Kids AU? Yes I can because I love my sibling Toa Mata/Nuva Headcanon

I can definitely see in some areas of matoran society that some elements would ge grouped into one group! Probably different expectations depending on their environement, needs, and who was currently ruling. From that would grow different genders. One good example of the spiritual - physical divide is Metru Nui where stone, fire, and air mostly did crafts and transportation while the other metrus focused on teaching, archiving, and future-reading, all jobs related to studying.
It's not that these were the only jobs each element could be performing according to their abilities and nature - see Matoro being a pet shop owner - but what the expectations were.
On a related idea: matoran, toa, and turaga are all different genders going by what was shown about them in the story.
Even a human who doesn't transition doesn't have the same gender over their life. It's a wholly different thing to be a child, compared to being a teenager, a young adult, growing older, being a senior, etc.
Even if it's not related to age, there's a similar idea. Matoran are workers; toa are protectors; turaga are communal leaders. Toa call people of their own team by the title of sister / brother as well as other toa. The same goes among turaga. But a toa and turaga are never seen calling each other that if I remember correctly.
Which makes me think of a toa team who mostly moved on as turaga, but where one or two of their members have stayed as toa for some reason.
They still treat each other largely the same. The turaga sometimes step in as warriors; the toa are also leaders. One of the turaga maybe doesn't want to lead at all and leaves it to a toa sibling.
It's very confusing to some matoran societies.
wow, that's a lot of different ideas! some of that is very new to me, like the idea that Toa, Matoran, and Turaga would be different genders, or that different duties are related to gender. I don't understand some of these ideas, but there's no harm in headcanoning!
I do like the idea of Toa having different terms of affection for Turaga than they do for each other, like instead of calling your Toa 'brother' or 'sister' you call them 'grandfather/grandmother' or 'uncle/aunt.' sometimes people protest that words like that are too human, but they're not any more relational than brother or sister! if you've spent time in a culture where you call lots of people your aunt, uncle, or grandparents, this will make more sense. I also like to say that the Toa Mata call Artakha father, not out of any kind of affection or family relationship, but just as a word that means someone who created you specifically.

Nokama thought / hoped she'd get a level-headed toa of water.
And Gali is that, too.
She's also a little shit who enables other people's nonsense and eagerly gets enabled herself in her mischief. She's worst with Lewa. Gali's also gotten in dare-offs with Tahu after they've found their groove. They're the people, when relaxing, to balance on the edge of a cliff or surf on massive, dangerous waves while goading each other with comments like "Do A Flip!"

Maybe Tahu's temper run so badly at the beginning because he faintly - without conscious memory - remembers how his body's supposed to look like. Or that he should know the other Toa Mata but he can't make sense of it.
Maybe it frustrates him that, however faint and far-away his memories are, that the siblings he meets on Mata Nui differ so much from what he remembers of them last.
Having no memories or knowledge about who you are would be frustrating in general. Even without the loss of them undoing any previous growth you'd gone through.
He could also be angry at himself. He tricked his siblings to enter the pods by not telling them about the power storms.
It left the only options as to be trapped for possibly ages or going to sleep, as his last action before waking up again.
Tahu just has no idea who these feelings are aimed at.

Headcanon: Both Kopaka and Tahu have a perfectionist streak. Whereas with Kopaka, it stems from a fear or rejection and mockery if he fails.
Tahu's perfectionism stems from unconscious, too high expectations on himself. Smaller mistakes can weigh heavier on him, because he should do better than this!
It's an important difference, but the sources are also not so different from each other, either.

Imagine all of the Toa Nuva remembering Karda Nui - which was implied to happen in canon - how they were trainined included. They are thinking back about what the turaga had told about their time as Toa Metru.
They internally wince because OUCH. They have a better idea now how difficult it was for the Toa Metru.

I have an old headcanon that the Toa Metru as a Toa Nui would rival the GSR's processing power on their own, no Core Processor needed.
We know that Mata Nui has some measure of psychic powers in canon: He planted the ideas for his Chosen in Teridax's brain.
These two unrelated points recently inspired another headcanon:
Mata Nui chose the Toa Metru because he sensed a resonance with them. Maybe he considered a back-up. If he was falling into a coma, he'd need a replacement to inhabit the Core Processor in his stead. What better matoran than the ones whose mind and souls resonate with his own? Who have the potential to bear this burden?
His choice plus the resonance between him and the six then-matoran left a mental impression in their minds.
These impressions are so faint that nobody else but Mata Nui would find it. Even then he'd have to search to find them again. They have no effect on the Toa Metru / Turaga Metru if left alone.
However. The turaga and Mata Nui repeatedly meet on Spherus Magna in this headcanon. (They are not aware at first how close he is.)
The impressions grow stronger around Mata Nui's latent psychic powers, which had brushed against the turaga's minds before.
Slowly, that they mistake it for accidents and good or bad luck, the turaga develop their own psychic powers independent of any masks. An example: Nokama redirects a falling boulder with a jet of water. She shouldn't have been strong enough to do that - or she should feel a greater elemental exhaustion from this feat.
But unknowingly, she used telekinesis to nudge the boulder the extra distance away. As this happened without any visible signs, nothing else points at telekinesis.
Over time, they develop a telepathic / empathetic bond with each other. Again, they don't realize at first that this is what is happening. They believe it's instincts and having known each other for so long that they often can read or predict what the others are feeling and / or will say.

Headcanoning interactions and specifics of bonds because I’d have loved to see them.
Starting with the Toa Metru.
- Nuju. Most interactions he had was with Nokama and Whenua who were fellow scholars, and with Onewa whom he butted head with a lot but differently from his arguments with Whenua.
He grew to enjoy his time as a toa with his peers and cared about them. I feel that Nuju would respect Matau a lot for bringing back Vakama and how he did it, even when he (silently) worries it could have gone wrong. He recognizes his deep sense of loyality.
Another thing is that as a self-important scholar, he used to look down on crafts and trades. (Which I think is part of the source of tension between him and Onewa.) When it came to prepairing the ships to transport the sleeping matoran out of Metru Nui, he’d have no idea what to do with the machinery until Matau called him out on it (gently) and showed him how to operate things.
They worked efficiently next to each other, Matau’s chatter not inane as Nuju used to think but observant. Slower, focused on their duty, not expecting Nuju to talk except when it’s necessary.
Realizing how important Matau’s expertise in engineering is and acknowledging his intelligence went hand in hand with Nuju’s ongoing realization that he couldn’t just stay back and let others do the physical work. Physical work isn’t a necessary evil; it’s privotal and has merits on its own.
So Nuju helped Matau and the le-matoran establish the gukko force because he could communicate with the bird-rahi.
It wasn’t common on Mata Nui but nor was it rare that sometimes, Matau and Nuju would go gukko-riding secretly, spending time together.
Apropos birdspeak. The turaga still understand him a lot more than most - outside of Matoro - simply because they can’t just shut off picking things up when they talk with him and hear Matoro’s translations. (Nokama is the language wizard, but all of them are smart.)
They also know him. Nuju demanded / begged his siblings not to actively try to learn it while listening to him because he knew they would. It was his way to feel control in a situation where was completely overwhelmed
-----
Now onto the Toa Inika / Mahri.
- Kongu. He and Jaller should’ve butted head more, not because of disrespect, but because they respect each other as equals and leaders. Jaller wanted to do better than the Toa of Fire before him and Kongu took his duties seriously. But they neither have the same character nor the same leadership style.
So they clash because they’re equally competent and overwhelmed in the situation. Kongu is angry at him that he thinks only Jaller worries about Matoro withdrawing. Jaller calls him out when Kongu’s impulsive decisions endangers him / the team.
On the other hand, they rely on each other because of their similarities, finding comfort in their similar serioues natures.
They eventually become co-leaders with different flexible jobs.
Unfortunately, this drives also a deeper wedge between Kongu and Matoro.
------
Feel free to add your own headcanons and changes!

Character Headcanons
Gresh
Tumblr media
Gresh is the eldest of ten kids
His siblings pair off of him, a sister, the twin boys, the quints three boys and two girls, and finally baby sister who's a Glatorian like Gresh
Gresh's parents died after being ambushed by the Skrall, his mother was heavily pregnant at the time and begged her eldest child to at least save his baby sibling, Gresh used his old knife to get her out
After his parents deaths he and his siblings were taken in by their grandparents from their mother's side
One of Gresh's parents were Glatorian with some Agori relatives while the other was a halfie, resulting of most of their children being Agori
Gresh's grandfather stations as a guard for Tesara
Despite raising his younger siblings, Gresh absolutely adores children and wishes to one day be a father
Outside of his blades, Gresh carries around a collapsible bo-staff on him in case something happens to his blades, he is just as deadly with it as he is with his blades
Gresh threw out his old blade one day because he couldn't bare even looking at it anymore knowing he had to use it on his mother, it was homemade anyway so it wasn't the best blade either
Gresh always makes sure to visit his family especially after Glatorian matches
Gresh was worried when Tajun was attacked by Bone Hunters and Skrall, not just because the once rival tribes were working together but he knew Kiina would be so distraught seeing her village in ruins once more
When he got hurt during that event, his only thought was Kiina's worry
Gresh's jokes that he's difficult to kill like a bug, unfortunately at times it's not the best joke to use to lighten the mood
Gresh gives the best hugs possible
Gresh would use free time outside of training and whatnot to skate down canyon walls and dunes for the thrill of it, he does this a few times with Kiina either on his back or in his arms, the first time he did it unannounced she punched his arm afterwards and half threatened him to give her warning, Gresh laughed but agreed
Kiina does enjoy skating down canyon walls and dunes with Gresh nonetheless
Gresh holds a high belief that every single life is important and worth saving, unfortunately this belief has nearly got him killed a few times but he still holds it high
Gresh and Kiina regularly have "sleepovers", this was mainly when Kiina was at the worst of her night terrors and Gresh would always comfort her during them, his main way he would calm her down of it would holding her close, one hand holding her's stroking his thumb over her knuckles and have his forehead against her's while reassuring her it was alright
Gresh actually helped Kiina go back to her old ruined childhood village to try to find her old music box, it wasn't in her old hut but in the possession of the still alive Elemental Lord of Water, he kept it safe while she was gone until one day she would come back for it
Surprisingly enough the music box was in flawless condition and still played the lullaby, Kiina nearly cried that day due to the amount of joy and relief
After meeting the Toa post Journey's End, Gresh immediately befriended Tahu, Pohatu, Takanuva and Lewa. Lewa, Takanuva and Pohatu reminded him of his younger siblings as Tahu did save him during the final fight
Gresh and Lewa would collect flowers to bring to the dormant Ignika for Mata Nui while swapping the wilted and dead flowers from previous visits with the new fresh ones
Gresh absolutely loves listening to Takanuva's Chronicler stories and managed to get Kiina into listening to them
Gresh still has his mother's old wedding pendant choker like Ackar does with his mother's

Image ID: one of my fave Tahu moments is when he’s confessing to Gali about tricking them into the capsules and she’s described as his “dearest friend.” if you’re willing, could you write a post of Tahu’s relationships with all the Nuva as you interpret it? Also, I always found it funny how the Nuva learned all these lessons with hydration (work together, etc) and immediately messed them all up on Mata Nui. End ID.
got a great request from Fish so yes here are some things I love about Tahu’s relationships with his siblings!! okay you guys know I’m a little talkative so I’ll just go one-by-one and reblog as I write more hahaha.
Kopaka and Tahu
I talk about this all the time but honestly the fact that they hated each other so much at first but then learned to be not only teammates but friends and even leader and right-hand man together is genuinely so amazing and something I really really love about their relationship
also they’re funny as hell together even before they become friends. like they hate each other so passionately. Tahu’s such a living temper tantrum about him (literally jealous of Kopaka from the first time they meet) and Kopaka’s just so irritated 24/7 (just walks the fuck away when Tahu’s annoying him in the first book). their interactions are really funny but also reveal a lot about their characters from the start, which is really important. and even when they hate each other, they have each other’s backs!
that moment in their training where Tahu almost makes Kopaka smile because he thinks to pretend to surrender, and Kopaka can’t help but be a little impressed by him. and that moment where Tahu’s just in awe that Kopaka found the Bohrok cave!! they’re honestly both very aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses - probably part of the reason they work so well together by the end of the story.
I know we joke about Kopaka thinking it’s funny to freeze Tahu when he’s corrupted by the Rahkshi, but his “sorry, brother” is very soft and genuine and he does not for a SECOND mock Tahu’s corruption or snark at him while he’s ill. He helps cure Tahu without hesitation, does whatever Gali asks of him to look after him, and looks after Gali and Lewa like a leader would while Tahu is down - and then fucks off again without explanation to avoid emotional discussions, hahaha. asshole, i love him
Kopaka also protects and reassures Tahu’s Matoran the moment they’re in danger! not that he would let them get hurt, but he’s even affectionate with Takua and Jaller (pat pat). I’m sure they would both honor their duty to protect each other’s homes and Matoran without hesitation
the fact that Kopaka does, in fact, eventually let Tahu lead him is like... okay not to be dramatic, but that’s a beautiful show of trust and forgiveness. Kopaka totally lays down his pride for the good of the team because he sees the good in Tahu and he’s come to trust that Tahu will, in turn, respect his independence and care for their siblings. and Tahu, likewise, sees all the good in Kopaka and trusts him as his deputy, leaving him in charge of Lewa and Pohatu. the bond between them is very deep and they trust each other so much now.
and in fact Kopaka laying down his pride to let Tahu lead is something that happens from the very beginning, when they’re still with Hydraxon!! Kopaka wants to tell the others that they’re going to be in the Toa capsules, but he lets Tahu make the decision - and even stops Lewa from asking questions about it!!! Kopaka has a strong sense of duty, and that duty tells him to respect that this person was chosen as his leader even when he doesn’t like it. that faith in the Great Spirit’s plan eventually leads him to see that Tahu is in fact a great Toa and his leader, and that he was able to earn that respect from his Ice Toa must honestly be a huge source of pride and confidence for Tahu as well as a motivator to never lose that respect and always respect Kopaka in return.
that moment!! where Kopaka!! falls and burns his leg in the lava and Tahu is the one who grabs him and helps him back up!! like yes they would all help each other if they were about to get hurt, but imagine - this is perhaps the worst Kopaka’s ever been hurt, he’s been burned twice now and is probably choking on smoke inhalation, he’s exhausted without his mask and from passing out, and in this moment of agony and fear his Fire Toa stops and comes back and heaves him to his feet and drags him to safety before any more harm can come to him. they! have! each other’s! backs! and they know that!
also that moment where Kopaka walks straight through Tahu’s wall of fire and Tahu is just stunned by this and gets this moment where he sees just how deadly his brother could be when he’s truly angry, to the point that Tahu tells the others to stop Kopaka from hurting the Matoran. it’s that acknowledgement of each other’s weaknesses and strengths again, and the way you protect your brother when he’s not himself. they’re like two natural disasters who see each other for the power they have and learn to balance each other out.
when they have to start a fire together even though they’ve both lost their elemental powers... Idk that just makes me laugh hahaha. Gali’s just watching her idiots trying to solve their problems. I love her
(okay I know even I have talked a lot about their arguing but honestly?? honestly?? let me level with you: they really don’t fight that much after the first couple months hahaha. everyone gets after Tahu for being an aggressive jerk but he mellows out and learns to respect Kopaka and the others pretty quickly and even in the beginning he can be very affectionate at times. honestly I don’t think their fighting was ever as bad as some of the Toa Metru fighting, so try to be a little gentler on Tahu!!)
that moment when Tahu’s so happy to see Kopaka and Lewa and Pohatu come down from the sky to help the Mistika... that’s LOVE BABY he LOVES HIS TEAM AND HIS RIGHT HAND AND IS PROUD TO LEAD THEM DON’T FIGHT ME ON THIS
when Tahu and Kopaka talk about Lesovikk and Karzahni, Tahu isn’t bossy at all and really respects Kopaka’s concerns, listens to him, and lets him do what he feels he needs to do. it’s pretty clear that the contention between them is gone and they don’t have any issues letting each other be independent
some headcanons!!!
I bet they love to spar/play-fight together and both know each other’s fighting styles REALLY well. it’s scary when they fight because they both go wild, knowing each other’s limits, so it can look like a real fight
at this point, Kopaka just has to give Tahu a LOOK and he knows exactly what it is that’s annoying him. Recently, they’ve been exchanging a lot of looks as they try to play politician with stubborn Agori.... but it cheers Tahu up knowing that at the end of the day, Kopaka’s just as annoyed as he is and always has his back
I like to think that a Fire Toa choosing an Ice Toa as his right-hand man is REALLY unconventional and even looked down on by some. people doubt that they can work together or that a Fire Toa and Ice Toa aren’t supposed to get along that well, as it requires compromise on their natures, which are supposed to clash. but Kopaka is not ashamed to stand at Tahu’s side and Tahu knows no one could direct and support him quite the way Kopaka can.
I bet they do still fight sometimes, but they work so much harder at actually having productive fights and calling each other out when they’re messing up without making personal attacks on them or not being constructive about it. they hate having to do this, so most of the time they just try to be really direct and then just accept each other’s criticism. “you’re being a dick right now” “okay, fine, I’ll tone it down!!” or “you’re wrong about this battle plan” “well, show me what you would do, asshole.” honestly, they’ve gotten pretty chill about insulting each other casually. it’s almost affectionate at this point. they have to stop themselves from swearing at each other in official meetings
I wonder if Tahu’s kind of worried about Kopaka after the Last Battle... it’s canon that Kopaka’s really exhausted and questioning a lot of things, but it’s never really explained what lead up to that. is he hurt? is he grieving? is he just going through it right now and under a lot of stress? Tahu can tell that’s something’s wrong, but he doesn’t know what - and despite all their progress, emotional conversations are still weird to them. he’s just hoping Kopaka will be back from that Red Star soon - concerns aside, he needs his deputy’s help dealing with everything that’s going on!!
the two of them are perhaps the most homesick for Mata Nui. it’s partly because they’re being asked to take on so much responsibility now. they’re both kind of longing for the days when they were just allowed to be Toa of small koros on an island that they loved. they don’t talk about that. but sometimes they see it reflected in each other’s eyes when Kopaka is looking off at the faraway snow of the mountains or Tahu finally has a few minutes to sit down with his Matoran and just know that his people are safe.
both also so protective together... if anyone ever messes with their brothers they’re going to be so ticked off, just fuming with anger... I say brothers cause Gali can handle herself and they both know it hahaha
Tahu just. he just really really knows that Kopaka has his back. no matter how complicated things get. Kopaka’s support is unchanging. Kopaka is one of the only constants in his life and he really needs that. at the same time, this could eventually cause some problems for Kopaka if he began to internalize that role and began to feel that he would be letting Tahu down by expressing his own fears or doubts or needs. like I said, he’s very duty-bound - he’ll need to learn not to put his duty and his role before his own health
