Going through the 2001-2003 Templar Studios games and animations again because of course, and something hit me
Tumblr media
Vakama just uses the Sacred Fire as an excuse to share things he already knows from Metru Nui but make it appear like he's also only just hearing from it, right? Matoran or Tahu come to him with a question, he has the information but if he just gives it to them they'll be pissed at him for not sharing it sooner and also question how he knows in the first place, so he just gazes into this fancy fire and pretend he is also only just finding out, everybody happy
And I suppose the other Turaga do similar things: Nuju uses the stars (which isn't even a complete lie), Nokama probably consults the waves, etc.
And then there's Matau
And I'm sorry but there's only one way I can envision this happening:
Lewa: Turaga, what are those creaturethings coming from Makuta? Matau: Let's quickask the Almighty Kewa *walks to a branch on which a Kewa is just chilling* Matau: Mighty Kewa, what are the creaturethings coming from the darkgrounds of Mata Nui? Kewa: *caws once* Matau: they're namecalled Bohrok, and their dutygoal is to destroy. Their powerstrength is their Krana, and you need to quickfly and collect all their Kranatypes so the way to their nestlair will be opened Lewa: *confusion* Kongu: don't doubtask it
For added hilarity he always asks a different Kewa but insists that the one he's asking this time is The Almighty Kewa

Water for Gali was a sister, a second half, an extension. In the water she was whole, embraced, with nothing to fear.
Water for Nokama was an escape, a bubble of respite. Somewhere nobody could snag her, bother her, search for her.
Water for Hahli was a home and battle ground. She was invincible within it, untouchable, unbreakable, unreachable.
Air for Lewa was a safety net, a support; a pair of outstretched arms always ready to catch him before it was too late.
Air for Matau was a vehicle, another means of transport; something he had to master lest he break his bones upon it.
Air for Kongu was a second skin, a third limb; he knew better than anyone its shifting secrets, its so quiet language.
Fire for Tahu was an old rival. It curled on him, molded itself in his image, quipping amiably as they fought together.
Fire for Vakama was a tepid gaze. It reached out timidly, barely still burning, asking to be allowed in his hands again.
Fire for Jaller was a solemn promise. One he would need to hold tight, strengthened by discipline, to do right by it.
Ice for Kopaka was a taste of wilderness, carelessness, freedom; it was howling alone, dancing wildly in the silence.
Ice for Nuju was a breath of stillness, study, tranquillity; it was gazing in endless white to decode the world on his own.
Ice for Matoro was a scent of expectation, fear, tenderness; he entrusted to it his footprints, hoping they'd last.
Earth for Onua was peace and quiet. The songs it rumbled through him soothed him like kind hands easing his worries.
Earth for Whenua was reflection and wait. The stories it had written on its skin kept him company like many old friends.
Earth for Nuparu was knowledge and innovation. He heard in it his own voice as he mumbled during tireless workdays.
Stone for Pohatu was a rough comfort forced soft; when he wrapped it around himself like a blanket, he felt safe, warm.
Stone for Onewa was a tough tool forced smooth; when he shaped it according to his vision, he felt in control, certain.
Stone for Hewkii was a lean muscle forced strong; a part of himself that he exercised apart, to carve it into its zenith.

I think the reason the Toa Inika look mostly samey aside from masks, weapons, and color schemes is that none of them registered that they'd been toafied until after they landed.
They weren't thinking about the ideal toa form at all, so the red star just went "Oh well, default mode it is. -ZAP-"
HOWEVER
When they became the toa mahri after a zap from the mask of life, they absolutely had a mental image of what the ideal toa should be, and THAT'S why they look so different.
Kongu became a juggernaut
Hewkii turned into conan the barbarian
Hahli ended up a valkyrie
Nuparu turned into what I can only describe as an underwater stealth bomber
Matoro- well. He's a beanpole. can't help that.
And Jaller is just... a guy. Tahu must have really lowered his estimates, huh.

The Toa Mahri find it hard to be around Kualus.
He tries to talk with Kongu about birds ("Your friend Ka has told me so much about you...") and Kongu can't quite look him in the eye. His mind seems far away.
He brings up some aspect of Matoran history with Hahli, thinking it might interest the former Chronicler, and after a few minutes she abruptly excuses herself. As she dashes away, Kualus thinks he hears a tiny sob escape her lips. Was it something he said?
Kualus met most of them as Matoran, and they'd been fine with speaking to him then, even when he was a hideous little Rahkshi-headed thing.
Nuju is no help when Kualus asks, muttering something to the effect of "It's obvious, isn't it? Or have you got feathers for brains?"
It's not as bad for Nuju, since he knew Kualus first. But it's still there. An uncharacteristically friendly Toa of Ice? With a silver mask? Who loves caring for small Rahi and talks to the birds? Kualus goes around looking and acting like that and expects it not to hurt?
It's Vakama who finally tells Kualus:
"It's not your fault... You remind them of him."

I Really, really like the Kanohi Suletu on a design level. The organic version really gives the idea that an inorganic version is under there, with a more sharp edge design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The right is a grumpy Kongu just because. The left is a slightly abstract concept of an inorganic Suletu. Mostly just figuring out the core shape rather than any solid details. I've always thought the mask had a slight knight's helm quality, so that was the goal.
But the organic scale pattern of the official piece is equally satisfying and a little mysterious. Do organic scales occur in the Matoran Universe? Or do the Red Star masks draw from otherworldly origins? Fun stuff to think about.
Tumblr media
I'll wrap up with a full effort drawing of Kongu. Because why not? That's where the mask starts from right? At least on the visual side. I have ideas about Krakua anyway...

if you haven‘t seen it yet, i can strongly advise you to watch this new bionicle fan film. It is simply beautiful and depicts one of the most pivotal moments in the entire story. It is also dedicated to Theshadowedone1, one of the biggest biotubers who sadly passed away close to one year ago.
(i did not make this, all credit goes to the creators who uploaded it on youtube)
