I just saw a post about being against Ian and Mickey as dads, and it got me thinking.
I don't love the idea of them specifically trying to have a baby. I think Mickey has so much trauma to unpack that it's just ... it's a no from me, Simon.
But I love the idea of them becoming accidental parents in a few years. Like, one night at a Gallagher dinner Liam brings a friend along to stay for a few nights because "his family's a nightmare", but there's so much fucking drama going on in that house that by the end of the night, after playing a few rounds of Mario Cart with him, Mickey's all like, "hey, you can crash on our couch for a few days" and crashing on their couch turns into them buying a second-hand bed and putting it in the spare room and a few days turns into five years.
And then a year later there's this girl who hangs out near their favourite South Side burger joint and even though she's young, she's clearly homeless but totally gives Mickey Mandy vibes. Liam's friend has moved is an adult by now, moved out and doing great, so Mickey offers her the couch. Couch turns into the spare bed, etc, etc.
And then, for a while and for whatever reason, Franny takes up permanent residence in the room for, like, six months, maybe a year. And a while after she moves out her non-binary partner isn't accepted by their parents and because they're still in high school they need a place to live, so they move in and Mickey's all like "doors stay open!" any time Franny visits.
And I just really want the whole "plenty of strays wandering around the neighbourhood. I'm sure we can pick one up for cheap" to come to fruition one day.

But I love the idea of this so much so here are some possible other scenarios:
Ian, Mickey, Lip and Tami are doing a big shop at a grocery store. It’s for all the family so Ian and Tami wander off at one point - they’re focused on the lists they’ve written and Lip and Mickey are left standing awkwardly with the shopping cart, Fred sat in the child’s seat. Silence. Annoyance. Both of them hate waiting. Mickey’s curled over the other end of the cart, texting Ian furiously about leaving him here with Lip. Meanwhile, a person passes by and notes the contents of their cart - everyday items and a baby - they decide to compliment this nice couple and their sweet son. It goes badly….
Ian and Mickey have hired Lip to work for their security business. It’s Mickey’s turn to have Lip as a co-worker for the day. They’re first stop is a new business. They’re not that familiar with the security guys and assume Lip and Mickey are husbands because they’ve heard that the security guys are married. Cue horror and disgust.
Liam has a parent teacher night and one of his siblings needs to be there. There’s all sorts of miscommunication and Lip and Mickey both turn up. Whatever. They’ll both go and listen to each teacher tell them how great Liam is. The thing is, Liam has recently written an essay on his family (including mentioning his brother and his brother’s husband) and all his teachers incorrectly assume Lip is Ian. Mickey didn’t think he could hate school any more. But he can.
It’s a night out for Lip, Tami, Ian and Mickey. They start off at a bar, then go to a club, then another club and finally they end up at a gay club. Everyone apart from Lip is drunk. Ian and Tami want to dance so they leave Mickey and Lip at a table. A very confident guy comes up to flirt with Lip who quickly says he’s taken. The guy looks at Mickey who loudly says “not by me he ain’t” with a look of disgust. Lip gets offended. Ian and Tami come back to the table to find Lip and Mickey two seconds away from a fight.
The Gallaghers + Mickey, Sandy and Tami included take a trip to the carnival. Fun! Right? Except for the fact that Ian’s feeling a little sick. Must have been those snacks he ate. He asks Lip to tell Mickey that he doesn’t wanna go on the romantic tunnel of love ride that Mickey’s currently queuing for. Mickey’s phone has died so Ian can’t text. Fuck, ok. So off Lip goes and somehow ends up in the boat with Mickey thanks to the ride attendant who doesn’t believe they’re not a couple. Lip becomes the only person ever to ‘fall’ in to the water of the tunnel of love ride.

Bro it bothers me sm when ppl are like “Debbie turned out like her mother” or “lip turned out like Frank” or saying that any of the kids turned out like their parents bc they didn’t??? ok so bee, i saw this ask and i was about to give a normal response to this but then i was like, yk what- fuck it, so here’s a whole ass meta post about generational trauma in shameless and why i also hate this.
(i’m so sorry in advance i’m just crazy)
generational trauma in shameless
shameless is a show that portrays a lot of serious topics, especially topics regarding dysfunctional families, substance abuse, and mental illness. one of those topics portrayed is generational trauma. as someone who comes from a dysfunctional family with a lot of generational trauma, i feel like shameless portrayed this so well.
the first generation to start this (that we really got information about) is frank and monica’s parents. we learned the most about frank’s parents, so i’ll start off there. we learned the most about peggy gallagher, frank’s mother (who- fyi, debbie was kind of named after since peggy’s real name is margaret and that’s debbie’s middle name, so that adds to the whole generational trauma thing but whatever), peggy was an abusive monster. she had four sons, and her least favorite was frank. this was very apparent. she treats frank (and monica, we know she hated monica even though we never saw them together) like shit, and in 4x11, we learn that she raped frank as a child. in season 2, she gets out after being in prison for around eleven years and found joy in humiliating frank + could’ve killed carl with their meth lab. she sucked. her husband was also bad. we didn’t learn much about frank’s father, but we know that much like his son, he was an abusive drunk. he used to make frank wear a dress and would beat him. frank had a very traumatic childhood, which definitely played into the way he parented his children and decided to spend his adulthood. we don’t know a lot about monica’s parents, but we know that frank says that monica’s parents ruined her. monica’s mother is mentioned once in 3x06, where she’s calling fiona and forgets who monica is. one can infer she had dementia or something like it, and it’s implied she died by season 7. speaking of season 7, that’s where we meet her father, bill. bill is a crude man who criticizes everything. we know that he had little involvement in his daughter’s life, and was a army man, making monica a military brat.
so, one abusive addict parent and one uninvolved parent. sound familiar?
i don’t think i need to explain much about frank and monica, but i will anyways. frank and monica made fiona on accident and monica didn’t want her, not long after lip was born, frank went to rehab and monica and clayton made ian. when debbie was born, frank wanted to sell her. when carl was born, monica left not long after. when liam was born, monica, yet again, left weeks later. monica is uninvolved, and frank isn’t necessarily uninvolved, but he isn’t really involved either. frank was the black sheep of the family and the least favorite. his father hit him (we’re lead to believe he was the only one who was hit) and he seemed to have had it pretty rough, maybe it’s just me, but when i hear that, i think of ian. monica and frank are both victims of their environment. being a military brat, monica most likely moved around a lot and felt very lonely. so, she found comfort in the lifestyle that was moving constantly, and didn’t really grasp the concept of two parents being there constantly. that, her addiction, and her disorder played parts in her parenting style. frank grew up humiliated and was smart, but became an addict and a drop out. he tried to improve his life on multiple occasions but failed each time. i will die on the hill that both frank and monica loved their kids, but not enough, not in the right way. something i feel very strongly about due to my own experiences is that you must heal before becoming a parent. growing up with unhealed parents puts you into a position nobody should be put it.
on the topic of growing up with unhealed parents, we have lip and debbie. lip and debbie both have hero complexes, and also both have always wanted nothing more than to have children. lip is an alcoholic, and one of the ways he copes with this and keeps his sobriety is by putting other people’s problems before his own. debbie is troubled, to say the least (it’s implied that she struggles with borderline personality disorder), and to cope with her crippling loneliness she self sabotages and prostitutes herself. in season 2, the possibility of lip being a teen dad was there and lip was willing to ruin his entire life for a kid that he wasn’t even sure was his. in season 3, he takes in mandy’s half-sister to save her from foster care. in season 8/9, he rescues xan and tries to become her guardian. ian describes him as the closest thing to a dad all of the gallagher siblings have ever had. in debbie’s case, from season 1 we learn about her caring nature. we see her care for her father, aunt ginger, and her babydoll. in the next season, she starts her own daycare and cares for those babies. she has wanted nothing more than her own family since her first appearance. she gets pregnant at fourteen and by fifteen, destroys a lot of her life for her baby. she likes feeling wanted and having a family and she loves caring for her daughter. (it’s also worth mentioning the similarities between frank and fiona and monica and ian, but that’s for another day).
so now, here’s the question: are lip and debbie frank and monica?
i’d say no. lip is still struggling with active addiction, by season 11, he is not recovered, he relapsed and the ending is so ambiguous (purposefully, every character’s ending was left up to interpretation) that we don’t really know what’s going on with him pre-11x12. but there is that scene where lip gives fred this speech about how frank was an addict, and gave lip alcohol as a kid, and now lip’s an addict. and lip tells freddie that he would never do that to him. i feel like that alone gives us the assurance that lip isn’t like frank (in that way). but is debbie monica? also no. many fans are inlove with the idea of debbie abandoning franny, it seems to be all they talk about, but as a self-proclaimed debbie expert (lol) i’d say that that’s blasphemy. debbie would go through hell for franny, and in 11x08 delivers a monologue about why she will never leave franny. that doesn’t mean she’s a flawless mother, she isn’t, but she’s also twenty. i think that the most confirmation we have that debbie isn’t like her mother is in season 7 when she loses franny. she goes through absolute hell over losing her child. monica gets franny back and claims to relate, but debbie (and viewers) can tell that it’s different. we know that the gallagher’s were taken away on multiple occasions, and we know that when monica found out her kids were taken from her, instead of coming home, she willingly signed the rights to them away.
anyways. i completely agree that they are not like their parents; are they like them in certain ways? absolutely. but i also fully believe that the two of them are breaking the cycle. fred and franny will grow up and never have to worry about having a roof over their heads, they will never worry about not having food in their stomachs, they will never find themselves without a parent for a year or two. they will, hopefully, grow up with no substance abuse issues and no mental health issues. hopefully.

After the Rockfield incident, Noel didn't dare fucking up again. Except the one I ordered for him didn’t have anything special in it. As for me, I choked. Why? Because I almost swallowed a diamond ring that was in it.
I was shocked.
What the fuck Noel? Do you want to kill me? I asked him, taking the ring between my fingers.

Following his acclaimed 2019 documentary on Liam Gallagher, As It Was, director Charlie Lightening has turned his attention to Louis Tomlinson.
The former One Direction star hasn’t had it all as plain sailing as many would assume since the manufactured post- X Factor days. Following the deaths of both his mother and sister, Tomlinson has had to overcome personal plight, as he searches for purpose in his solo career and life on tour. It’s all there to see in All Those Voices – and we spoke to Lightening to find out how the film all came together…
Congratulations on the new film – I found it quite moving, surprisingly so…
It’s interesting you say that. I think in its entirety the film will be surprising to a lot of people: the honesty and Louis’ journey, and how big it’s actually become. Sometimes I find among the press, [Louis] doesn’t get as much credit as say Niall does – and obviously Harry. But this film is something where I think people will think, ‘Wow’, and realise [he should].

Definitely, it’s a very up-close-and-personal film. When did you first meet Louis and when did the idea for making a documentary about him originate?
I made the Liam Gallagher film, As It Was. Louis came to the premiere of that. Then his people got in touch and asked if I’d be interested in making some music videos for him. Obviously, I knew the history of [One Direction] and read certain things about what he’d been through personally. So I met him, and immediately liked him. There was something about him: he wasn’t just nice, but down-to-earth.
In the same way Liam Gallagher isn’t showbiz, Louis is the same – he’s not interested in showbiz mates, he just wants to be a down-to-earth lad. It’s a similar thing to me with my Northern roots. I just got to know him, and the more we talked, there’s a real depth to him. He’s a lot older than his years and a lot wiser than many given him credit for.
Him being a deep thinker comes across clearly in the documentary – especially the chats he has with his vocal coach, Helene Horylck…
And his honesty as well. Honesty and authenticity is what I try to capture when I make a film; at the root of everything I do, it becomes just a human story. It’s about finding something I like about that person, and knowing there’s a journey to go on, and that I can make the audience feel the same way I feel about him. I’ve worked with everyone over the years. I’ve been with Paul McCartney for about 15 years and documented him and learnt a lot from doing that, but it’s always just been me and a camera.

I always thought, ‘How are people going to take me seriously, if it’s just me and a camera?’ So I wanted to go and be the big director on set, with 50 people. Then I realised I lost that pureness of just you, a camera and a person. I’ve realised that’s now become my niche as such. You can see the similarities with [As It Was] and this film, where you’re right with the person.
With that in mind, did you have an initial vision about how you wanted to go about this film or did you just let the cameras roll, as it were? Because there’s this incredible narrative arc that takes place, from an artist a bit unsure of himself to a huge headline world tour…
It goes back to when I met him: I thought there’s so much more to this lad than we’re seeing. And I think being in a band like One Direction, as much as it gives you so many opportunities, it’s also a heavy load to carry, based on what you’re expected to deliver.
Especially for Louis, because of the music he’s into, and who he is, it’s difficult for him because he’s coming out and doing stuff that’s a bit more indie – it’s almost too indie for pop stations, and not indie enough for indie. I felt that the next album [Faith In The Future], was going to one where he’d do something really interesting. So it was his personality, what he was about, his opportunity and where he could go. But then it all made sense when I saw him do a gig with his audience. I thought I could finally make this film because I’d never seen an audience and an artist be on the same level like that.

Originally, we were meant to shoot the film, and it was all about getting on tour. But then because COVID happened, it added a whole other depth to the film. And I think his journey through that, doing those two shows, having a taste of it as a solo artist, and then stepping away from it, I think that made him actually realise his opportunity.
You mentioned One Direction, and obviously you can’t really tell Louis’ story without it, but the film doesn’t really dwell on the band or his time in it. Was that something you were conscious of: to really place emphasis on Louis as a solo artist?
There was so much of a story to tell of after One Direction. In some ways with One Direction, you know the story: they were put together, they brought their own personality, and it went massive. There’s not much more to it. I wanted to get across the whole story about him on that first single when he’s not actually on the single. And then for him to tell the story on the second single, wanting to get on it and going over it for hours with a producer, then he hears it and it’s Harry singing the line.
It must have been crushing: all of this success, everyone’s saying you’re famous, but you’re thinking, ‘What’s my role in this?’ For him to then go and want to be involved in the songwriting was so clever – if he’s not going to sing the line, if he wrote the line that’s almost better. That for me was the most important thing about One Direction; it was him finding his feet in it and then feeling validated with it.

There are some very difficult moments in Louis’ life too – chiefly the deaths of his mother and sister. What do you think Louis has in his character to overcome such immense challenges, especially with such public attention?
I think it’s his mum. I never got to meet her, but I felt a heavy responsibility in telling the story because obviously it’s someone’s life and it’s a sensitive scenario. At the same time, it could be something that could be milked or done in a certain way. It needed to be told, but I didn’t think it needed to be lingered on. There’s a line that [Louis’] grandma says: “we pride ourselves on being decent people”. And you can see that in Louis, he’s ahead of his years, which is what his mum gave him.
What were some of the biggest challenges you had in making this documentary?
Normally it would be like, ‘Right, we’ve got ten people coming to do this shoot, we’ve got two weeks and within that time we need X, Y and Z.’ Whereas, I’ll want to shoot for longer and it will organically happen. I think sometimes that can be tough because it all goes on in my head. A lot of the time we’re just hanging out, and it happens without [the artist] even realising. But I think it can be tougher on a bigger scale because you have to keep a lot of people happy.

Louis does come across exceptionally open in the film. Did that come immediately to him or did you have to build a rapport with him to get there? And how did you go about establishing that?
I’ve always just got on with people. There’re so many – I won’t say the word – idiots in the industry. There’s lots of egos and self-inflated people. And, for myself, I’ve always very much got on with the artist, it’s a very organic process. People just seem to let me in and trust me. Once that trust is established, nothing is off the table, we can talk about everything.
The only thing with Louis, because it was so personal, is once we got to the end [of filming], if there was anything that wasn’t right, or he didn’t feel comfortable, we would at least talk it through. But there wasn’t anything, I was surprised. The one thing I was worried about when he first saw the cut of it was how he would feel about all the personal stuff because I was so aware of how I wanted it to be. But by the time he saw it, there were actually no real comments about the personal stuff.
The story of Louis being a young dad is quite powerful too. It must have been quite an emotional project to film and create for you personally, to be in and amongst that…
I lost my mum as well, not too long before we started filming, so there was a sense of empathy from myself because of what Louis had been through. But I never felt sorry for him. I think in the past, it felt as though a lot of people had felt sorry for him, or they hadn’t necessarily looked at how good he is. That’s why, in some ways, he hasn’t talked about this stuff in the past, and why it’s good it’s in the film, because he’s said it all. He doesn’t need to go into too much detail with it.

Did that narrative arc that takes place surprise you as it developed, and you were making the film?
Yeah, you’re only as good as your subject, in many respects. With Louis, one, you’ve got the story; two, the arc of it; and three, because he’s grown up with cameras because of One Direction, is how comfortable he is around it. I think if you try and manipulate something, try and hold something back, I the viewer can tell – I can tell, anyway.
And then if you think about the fact that with the first tour, because he didn’t want to put his shop out and go and do massive shows from beginning, but wanted to feel it out, the first tour was smaller shows. But because of it being canceled two shows in, then he did livestream a year later and he’s in the Guinness Book of Records – it was the best thing. By the time he finally gets to go on tour, the need and want to see him was even greater.
We started the tour in America, and kept it in the theatre size, just to get a feel for it all. By the time we got to Europe, he then upgraded to arenas. And then we go to South America and he’s doing numerous nights in arenas. So, in some respects, you have the story of what you’d do over two or three tours, all happening at once.

Out of all of Louis’ lyrics, why did you choose All Of Those Voices as the title?
We thought “all of those voices” works on many levels. It’s “all of those voices” in his head, all of the voices that have said ‘you can’t do it’, or ‘you’re not good enough’. It’s also “all of those voices” of the audience in the crowds who’ve lifted him up. We took that line because it had so many meanings.
Speaking of all the people who put him down and those who’ve lifted him up, how far do you think Louis can go now?
Again, that’s a funny one. He’s already at a point that most artists don’t even get to. Personally I feel that what he can do is continue to champion indie bands, taking them on tour, and hopefully people can leave the snobbery just because he was in a pop band.
I think he’s just at the beginning, though, really – now he’s got the confidence to do what he wants. I mean, his shows are great, man. I’ve showed the film to younger people; my assistant director, for one, was a big One Direction fan as a kid, and she said, “I just didn’t realise he was doing this, I want a ticket to go see that show.”

Do you think this is a film for the fans, or were you making this for people beyond that base?
It was really important to me to make a human story. Hopefully the fans will love it, but it was really important to make a film that if someone who isn’t a big fan put it on, they’d think, ‘Wow, he’s a cool guy’. I’ve got a lot of respect for Louis, and I value him dearly as a friend as well. But at the same time, it’s really important to me it’s not a purely promotional piece, or anything that’s made to further someone’s career, like a lot of these documentaries are. I think it would be hard to critique what we’ve done because he’s just being honest.
There are so many fans who come up to Louis at signings and say, ‘You’ve saved my life’ and ‘thank you’; because he’s had success and been very lucky, but also some of the stuff he’s been through is quite touching – at the same time, like he says [in the film], that could happen to anybody. I feel that for him to show that he’s been through it, and be honest that it’s been tough for him, but that he’s trying to get through it and be positive, is such a strong message for people.

So in 2017, when he was first working on what I'm assuming is the lost LT1 album he talked about how songwriters that would have loved to have worked with One Direction (which includes working with Louis because he was the main songwriter) weren't willing to work with him as a solo artist.
But this was the summer of 2017... before Back To You had come out. Well before all the blacklisting would have been clear and his "lack of commercial appeal" was apparent. So what was it that stopped the songwriters and producers from working with Louis? Did he really have a bad reputation within these circles? Or were there incentives to not work with him?
(That same quote included how it wouldn't have been the same for Harry. Which also ties into what he said recently about how Harry's solo success bothered him at first. It's normal to wonder why it's easier for your peers than it is for you especially since Louis was the actual driving force behind what made One Direction as successful as it was. Also hilarious to think about when we have the story of how Harry played Jeff Bhasker The White Stripes instead of his own demos, but I digress.)
And with that in mind, what he's been saying about Walls being more challenging to make than FITF makes sense. Not only did he have to figure out what kind of solo music he could and wanted to make (without alienating the fans) but he also had to deal with people not wanting to work with him and he understood that. Which says a lot about his confidence at the time.
Fast forward to writing FITF and it's clear something changed. One could be that he wasn't really trying to reach out to big pop songwriters/producers... but instead more rock/indie artists/producers. But how did he get his foot in the door? Because at the time he had really only released a mostly pop album and hadn't toured yet either. And it's not like he had great commercial success or a good critical reception. Did someone vouch for him? Was it the Noel Gallagher writing credit on Walls? Was it a link through Charlie Lightening and Liam Gallagher (whom Louis wouldn't have met at the time - they apparently met for the first time in July in Australia...). Paul Arthurs (also of Oasis) seemed to take a liking to Louis during lockdown, as did Tim Burgess. Rob Harvey reached out to Louis through Charlie (not confirmed - but in the track by track Louis said it was cool when Rob Harvey wanted to write with him). It's possible some of the connections were through BMG (Nicholas Reschber was through Felix Howard) and Matt Vines (Theo Hutchraft I'm assuming was through Matt). Could it all have been (kill me for even suggesting this) through BMG? But the rest? How did he connect to the people who make him feel like he's finally found his place in music?
Which then also makes a bit more sense with his repeated insistence that he wasn't making music for its potential commercial success - but just because he wanted to make music he really loved. The people now willing to work with him all also seem to just love making music (his story of going to the pub and just talking about music with the same passion he'd talk to his friends to about football and all of their posts when the album came out/he got the #1 album). So him repeating that constantly could have been part resignation because his team sucks ass and don't dare aim for better, and part actually just wanting to make good music with people who also understood his vision.

I got tagged in some questions from @callivich and while I didn't answer all of them, I've got some! (I also kept these answers Ian Gallagher/Mickey Milkovich centric, though I did have a couple thoughts about just the show generally haha). Anyway --
What’s a fic you’ve read more than once? makes a cathedral, him pressing against me and then the companion piece and we will be like sailors, swimming in the sound of it by misandrywitch and intimatelyrearranged respectively -- they're just really good post-mickey's-coming-out-fics which I tend to love every rendition but those ones are really good (also I, like many tumblr people, love richard siken, so it had me hooked from the start)
What’s a headcanon you can’t stop thinking about? I love the idea that Ian gets really into photography. I think when he's settled in life he takes a lot of photos He's a sentimental guy, I think he's someone who would definitely have photos of his family in his wallet, and would just love taking pictures. (I also like the idea of when he is struggling, maybe going through a manic phase, this propensity to take photos is helpful for his family to find him and figure out what mental state he's in because the photos are kind of all over the place or of things that aren't there). And then ever since finding out Noel Fisher actually plays the piano, I love the idea that Mickey always wanted to play piano. (and that after expressing this desire that was when Terry tattooed his knuckles as an attempt to quash this dream). It's something I may explore in a fic later on.
What’s an idea you’d love to create if you had the time/inspiration? I have a bajillion but we'll stick with two that I'm not actually currently trying to write -- Kind of a strange idea, but I loved -- especially earliest seasons -- Sheila Jackson. Her struggle with agoraphobia was really heartwrenching (I love the scene where she finally leaves the house for the first time both for Liam and for Karen -- she's just someone who I rooted for then so uncomplicatedly). Anyway, I have an idea where Mickey, before Terry's dead but maybe safely with the Gallaghers, starts to develop agoraphobia like Sheila Jackson had. He finally feels safe at home and he starts to really fear the outside world, and it sneaks up on him, because he's supposed to be fine right? But he's not. He keeps repressing this fear and now it's coming out in this way of being unable to leave the house. And Ian -- from Fiona -- thinks to call Sheila Jackson. With Sheila's help, Ian and her and Mickey actually have interactions. I just think it'd be a really interesting dynamic, because Sheila was so motherly and kind and Mickey I think would hate that at first, but it's also kind of the care he should have had? Anyways, it's strange, but I'd love to explore it. The other one I have is a North American Western Au. Usually I don't write modern-world-setting canon in other contexts but for gallavich I have ideas. And I love western aus, I've written one for another fandoms, it's just fun. Maybe a small town where Ian was a sheriff but he struggles with his disorder and so he resigned; and then Mickey is part of the Milkovich gang that's raising hell all throughout the state but ends up finding Ian and... well if I ever actually write it you'll see.
What’s a plot hole you wish had been answered or resolved? I just wish the show would talk about characters that left more often. Or things that happened in their past more often. The only one they seemed to have done a decent job with in the beginning is Jimmy-Steve. But like, why the heck don't they mention Mandy? Or Karen? Or... ANYONE? That and there are events that should absolutely be referenced again. All of the shit with 3.6 at some point could probably use a rehash of trying to process that trauma. The characters talk a bit about what happened with Monica, or Fiona when Ian and Lip were kids, in later seasons they should be telling the stories of what happened in the early seasons to Liam or Carl or Franny or whoever. I understand many shows drop things for sake of the future plots, but as Shameless is a family drama, things that are dramatic in the family I think could have maintained their relevance for longer. Especially since Shameless has such a brilliant focus on generational trauma and how the kids are, in many ways, going to become their parents in some aspects (but how much so is up to them) it would have been neat for them to actually discuss some of the scars they earned during the show.
What scene or moment do you feel isn’t discussed enough? I don't know how much more it could be discussed, but I want to discuss it lmao -- but when Mickey says "missed ya", with the cigarette in his mouth and Ian responds with "really?" To me, it's the first time that Mickey says something real to Ian about their relationship, really the first acknowledgment that there's something to miss. He says this, and it's something he's said with no ulterior motive that he knows will make Ian happy, really for only the sake of making Ian happy. It will probably get him laid because this is Ian and they're both horny teenagers, but there's no guarantee, and that's clearly not why he's saying it. The best part of the interaction, though? The way Mickey smiles because he knows Ian's going to be thrilled. That like preemptive "watch this" and then he says it. I just, there's something really sweet about the interaction in a way that Mickey never let himself be previously.
What line/dialogue/description from something else (a poem, a book, a tv show, a movie, or something else) do you feel describes Ian and Mickey’s relationship? There's also a song aptly named "Goodnight Chicago" by Rainbow Kitten Surprise that immediately had me thinking about these two. you know, grain of salt bc im nobody and know nothing. but re: your post about oasis motif in heat 2; i certainly think youre self-evidently on to something with what the idea of an oasis represents as a theme. when it comes to the references to the actual band specifically, tho, bc it cant all just be about the name/word, right- i immediately wonder if it has to do with inviting comparison between the relationship central to heat as a narrative and the relationship between noel and liam gallagher. bc i mean. heat is famously about this intense (arguably intimate, and more intense due to its intimacy, and more intimate due to its intensity, ad nauseum feedback loop) mutually antagonistic rivalry right? from my understanding. and noel and liam gallagher.. fucking hate each other but they are. Literally brothers and truly could never hope to escape the (grotesque? humiliating?) visceral quality of that connection regardless of how much it is left to degrade. does that scan? just something that occurred to me right away ig
WELL funny you should mention that… Neil makes a “throwaway” comment in the film about a brother he was separated from and lost touch with; in the book, Vincent’s full name is revealed to be Vincent Thomas Hanna (“Thomas” meaning “twin”). There’s even a Paolo character introduced in the novel who, based on other textual clues, might be a reference to a certain Paolo Hewitt:

Mann went to film school in London and resided in the UK for several years afterward to, ahem, escape the Vietnam draft. He has remarked many times in interviews that he lived the full Swinging Sixties experience. So it’s not like he’s unfamiliar with the territory.
Oasis also as a band represents a cyclical return to form, the rebirth/re-emergence/re-invigoration of a style of popular music that until the nineties was broadly considered passé and even retrograde. Cue Britpop, Oasis, and the decade of Cool Britannia. (The novel concludes with a Pontiac Firebird crashing and burning and Vincent discovering a heart-shaped locket with Neil’s photo in it among the wreckage… LMAO.) A few days ago BFI posted their full talk with Mann that was recorded at the beginning of the year, and he makes passing mention to what he was trying to impart with the first couple seasons of Miami Vice on TV, a sort of “neo-rock ‘n’ roll” spirit. So while I had never really pegged him for an Oasis fan, there’s clearly enough associative congruence for him to work with. All You Need is Love, maybe.

I do wonder what kind of relationship Mann has with his own brother, if indeed he has one at all. His father’s sudden death in his early twenties “shattered the family,” according to that Wall Street Journal piece from the Heat 2 press tour in 2022. Who knows what that means! He’s mentioned David a few times by his birth name, and not many details otherwise, but cursory Googling reveals that he does not go by that name any longer, and may be a practitioner of the Hindu faith. That’s as far as he goes, and as far as I can speculate!

I was pleasantly surprised to be tagged by the sweet @rayrayor Cheers, dear! Since this is my Shameless sideblog, I’ll stick with Shameless fic for this. That was far more difficult than I thought it’d be though, so don’t hold me these picks, as I might well change my mind tomorrow. Right now, my favourites appear to be mostly the very short things I wrote for Tumblr, rather than any longer fic.

Mickey wants back into Ian's life. Ian wonders if, and how, to let him. Or, the one where the boys conduct their meaningful conversations not by talking but by having sex.
Note: This is an actual, proper fic. Darker and heavier than my usual stuff, but I remain very pleased with it. Season 4 Gallavich was such a raw and tangled thing, and I had a lot of fun diving into the intricacies of their reunion.

So, I watcched 11x05 again, and started to wonder if Mickey will ever learn the truth about how Terry got shot (and if it matters).

AU: Ghost
A century or so ago, in a small town, Ian Gallagher receives and unexpected visitor.
Be warned: there's a lot of angst and not much comfort in this one.
Note: Tumblr short. I don’t care much for AU:s or angst but I’m very happy with the writing on this one. (There’s a tiny hint of hope at the end of it, btw. But this is a dark tale, what with the major character death and all.)
