it's time for a star trek update: finale edition. wednesday we watched ds9's "in the hands of the prophets" and tng's "descent part i."
in the hands of the prophets (ds9):
ok first of all it's fucking wack how relevant this shit still is like more than 20 yeasrs later. miss politician literally just pulled a r*n des*ntis trying to rile up her base about religious panic to get votes that she lacked
secondly they BOMBED a SCHOOL??? actually it works as a nice reminder of how the bajorans made their pleasure known under cardassian rule...for awhile there, federation was no different
LOVED o'brien being willing to beat a guy senseless for making his wife sad. good for him.
DID NOT LIKE kira and sisko fighting...........i liked that kira had that wake-up call at the end but i feel like ds9 has been a little unclear on whether or not she was a true believer til now, and i was a little surprised she thought the curriculum needed changin at first - then i was like well yeah i guess she was really upset when kai opaka died but then at the end she was like guess i'm not as much of a believer as i'd like to be! so a little hazy. but that might be a me problem
i liked that sisko took the time to sit down w jake and be like. people have a right to religion. lest this episode seem one-sided or unfair. it was a nice touch
the assassin being obriens little shadow was SUCH a nice touch but once they let you in on the joke she's like always suspiciously in the back and it kept cracking us up
the flirting scene was really good also. "on your toes o'brien" he read the room and headed immediately for the exit and good for him i love him sm. probably my favorite part of the entire ep i laughed really hard
overall felt like a weird choice for a finale, but not necessarily a BAD episode, just one of their weaker ones. i would have picked duet for sure but i guess it just doesn't involve as many characters, let alone Sisko, The Main Character
though side bar ther ehas been a disappointing lack of sisko-centric content in s1...........all he really got was the pilot and the plot with jake sneaking out to teach nog to read. fingers crossed for more of him in s2
descent part i (tng):
DATA....................................
the reason i was banned from reading the summary of this ep prior to watching was that it spoiled literally all 3 major plot twists 1. data gets an emotion 2. the borg 3. lore
i felt geordi was a little dismissive of data having an emotion here ("how would you know it's really anger") but i liked that deanna treated him really niceys. i thought his brainwashing at the end was a little scary but ULTIMATEL not his fault!!! somebody save my boy
i looooove seeing the borg again. even though these guys aren't the real borg i love the borg in any form <3
shoutout to hugh and that time picard DIDN'T experiment on a sentient being like a lab rat! and then this whole episode he was like damn i should have experimented on his ass. never change ig.
back to geordi, i think he should have helped data with the experiment. i don't know that it could have changed anything but it might have given them a clue...like yeah data is taking his life into his hands or whatever but geordi surely has a phaser. like he could say END PROGRAM at any time. furthermore, surely he culd ask data to step out and then tell the computer to PRETEND it was putting data's life in danger without actually doing it? it's wack that the holodeck can and nearly has killed people by the way. unethical horrific technology.
oh and i almost forgot how cool was it that the REAL LIFE STEPHEN HAWKING was in this episode, playing himself...and gambling :') i bet he was so stoked that was literally so fucking cool. i hope he had a great time
TONIGHT: tng's "descent part ii" and ds9's "the homecoming."

Prawn, what's your favourite Data episode (or moment)? My personal favourites are Phantasms, just for the shot of data answering his own phone, and Thine Own Self. x
OOKKKKKKK i started answering this last night and it took me so long bc i have brain problems re: data and i had to go to bed before i could finish it so i saved it as a draft and tumblr deleted it so ok here we go again thine own self fucking slaps, it's like top three data eps for me if not top three tng eps. his little tights. getting his face ripped apart. getting murdered in the town square <3 wow i love that for him!!! datalore/brothers/descent 1/2 OBVIOUSLY bc anytime data and lore are on screen together i'm in a frenzy. noonian being there in brothers is an added bonus. the first 10 minutes of brothers when he's taking over the enterprise is, like... erotic... that sounds insane but it's true. i love it when androids malfunction, it's hot. any episode where data is malfunctioning or being opened up or ripped apart or plugged in to something is like... (chef kiss)
measure of a man (FUCK BRUCE MADDOX).
the offspring :^( clues is an underrated data classique. picard threatening him that he'll be stripped down to his wires? ummmm-
best of both worlds when he's plugged in to locutus? "processing.... processing..." LOVE IT. obsessed with that scene.
fistful of datas. actually any time data and worf get screentime together i'm psyched. especially if worf ends up having to carry him around bc he got his shit wrecked. which reminds me that the iconia episode is great in season 2, whatever it was called. i'm too lazy to look it up. contagion?
i also love any time data and riker get screen time together bc riker is obviously in love with that android. data's day is great, i love just seeing him be a weird little guy. calling geordi lunkhead. ruining o'brien's day. "i am not nervous. i AM confused." uhhhh whatever the episode is where he starts dreaming. birthright. if we're talking about data dreaming episodes, i actually prefer this one to phantasms, even though phantasms also rules. i loooove watching him and julian create a category 5 autism event on the enterprise. also data being like i had a crazy vision, please electrocute me again so i can give it another shot. and even though i hate noonian and want to smash his head with a brick, he is beautiful and i love getting to see him.
hero worship is great. as with the offspring, it's another, "wow data would be a great dad" episode.
love quality of life just in general. it's obvious that picard cares about data like all of his crewmen but they do frequently end up at odds with eachother, so this episode along with measure of a man really stand out to me bc i love seeing picard so enthusiastically being on data's side. he can't even make small talk with data on the turbolift but by god is he ready to die so data can prove some little robots are fellow sentient beings.
the most toys </3
SPEAKING OF TURBOLIFT SMALL TALK, i know starship mine is technically a picard episode but data's parts in it are all great. love that statistically data is either the only guy who can solve a problem or is the guy directly responsible for the problem.
the episode with his mom is sweet even though in my mind it's non-canonical bc i don't believe that noonian soong is capable of um... caring about a fellow human being enough that he could convince someone to marry him (i hate noonian soong. have i mentioned that? actually i hate the entire family except the androids, they're just all terrible people).
uhh and then any episodes that feature data getting his mind hijacked and the entity who does it being like, "this body rules i'm going to beat the shit out of/choke the shit out of picard specifically". thank you... good stuff.
deja q gets 1000000 bonus points bc it is a great q episode AND a great data episode and i wish we got more of them being bfffs.
masks sucks so bad but the, "what does it feel like when one is losing his mind?" scene breaks my heart every time.
also this is not episode specific but data's fascination/love of therapy is awesome i love it i love that he wants to go to therapy every day and i'm glad that (even though picard the tv show sucks) data got his wish of daily therapy sessions with troi in season 3. good for him. GOOD FOR HIM!!!
this post is deranged sorry. this is not even a complete list i am sure i'm missing something. (i know the sherlock data episodes are like fan favorites but i don't... care for them. i'm glad he's having a good time though. sorry :^()

Hugh (Third of Five) has been a long time favorite since I first saw him in "I Borg" at the age of 12. Has it really been that long ago? Before that, I had always been fascinated with the Borg. In fact, it was "The Best of Both Worlds" episodes that got me hooked on Star Trek: TNG. When Hugh was introduced, it not only showed hope for those who had been assimilated, but a different side of a threatening enemy. Later the episodes Descent part 1 and 2 aired, I was ecstatic that the writers had not forgotten about Hugh and showed the consequences of the decisions made by the Enterprise D crew. The return of Hugh in Picard gave me all the feels, and seeing him help other Borg to become "free" was amazing. Just wish his death hadn't of been so lame. Description courtesy of the client. I had the pleasure to work on this exciting project for the wonderful PheonixxFoxx. It consists of two version of Hugh and then a final touch - an animated transformation that took a while to do, as I've done it only in Photoshop. The animation upload is coming right after this one! I hope you like the final version, it was quite a welcome and interesting challenge. Thank you for commissioning me!

This article brings up some really interesting, head-scratching points for me that I hadn't quite considered:
However, this new incarnation of Lore looks decidedly more human than Data or Lore looked before. Spiner seems to be keeping his natural skin tone, and also lacks those classic yellow android eyes. Still, in the final shot of the trailer, Geordi clearly identifies that this is Lore.
The last time we saw Lore was in the TNG Season 7 episode, “Descent Part II.” In that story, Lore had briefly brain-washed Data and led a group of liberated Borg to attack all sorts of planets. It ended with Data becoming good again, and then, turning Lore off. Presumably, Lore’s body was taken from the Enterprise and stored on Earth, likely at the Daystrom Institute where Dr. Jurati (Alison Pill) worked as a roboticist in Picard Season 1. Then again, the press release says that this character is named Lore, which could indicate there's some other twist. B-4 with Lore’s memories? A composite of Lore and Data’s memories that resulted in a new uber-Lore?
Lending credence to the idea that this return is not straightforward, comes from Brent Spiner himself. Speaking at the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic-Con, Spiner said that Lore is back in “a very complicated way.”
I noticed subliminally that Lore's skin/eyes weren't gold but it didn't fully register because I was looking more at the overall vibe of how older Brent looked as Lore. But this really does raise a ton of questions about how he came to be as he is between then and now.
What's been done to him? Is it even mentally him in the way we've come to know him? What is the nature of this complication that Brent alluded to?
Any and all speculation welcome!

For the shipping ask game: Daforge and Kiradax
Thanks for the ask!!
Daforge – don't ship it:
1. Why don't you ship it?
I feel like "don't ship it" sounds a bit harsh because I don't dislike the ship, it's just that nothing particularly draws me to it. I tend to get more invested in complex and messy relationships and while I love their friendship, I feel like a lot of the ship things I see for them is a bit more one note wholesomeness than I typically like in ships.
2. What would have made you like it?
I feel like if there was some more direct emphasis on their relationship in the show itself, I would get more invested. I love their fun Sherlock Holmes adventures and when they chill out in their off time but I would also be interested in seeing them disagree and have some chaotic elements thrown in their relationship. The closest we get is Descent but I wish we would linger a bit longer on Geordi's fears that Data could be corrupted so easily or Data's guilt about having nearly killed Geordi. However all of these things are faults with tng's no conflict policy and not necessarily a flaw in the ship itself.
3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?
Even though it's not particularly my jam, I can very much understand the appeal! All of their interactions are very good and there is a ton to explore in regards to Data's insecurity in his lack of humanity (and thinking that he can't feel love like others) and Geordi's insecurity in romantic situations. And that one part of tng where we find out Geordi always sees Data as if he has a halo around him and was shocked to learn others didn't see Data that way... that was very cute.
Kiradax – ship it:
What made you ship it?
I'm not super invested in Kiradax but I like it enough to say I ship it. I'm always looking for f/f ships and I think I read some fanfic awhile back that kind of convinced me.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
I think the thing that really compels me is how different their characters are. Kira takes things very seriously and tends towards aggression because of her extremely traumatic past while Dax (at least Jadzia) tends towards flippancy and freeness. I think both of them in the show end up meeting somewhere in the middle as Kira learns to loosen up and Dax learns when to take things seriously and it would have been so good to see them influencing each other more directly (which we get a taste of with their holosuite adventures).
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Hm idk I don't ever see them as endgame or an exclusive relationship but idk if that's unpopular or not.

There’s something about the TNG episodes “Descent part 2″ and “Interface” only being two episodes apart that adds to the Data and Geordi emotional story of them.
In “Descent part 1″, Data asks Geordi to help him with an experiment to feel anger again that could hurt or kill Data. Geordi is of course hesitant and tries to convince him not to do it. “I'm not going to just stand around and let you do this.” If they hadn’t been called to battle stations, I think Geordi would’ve done it, because he understands how important this is to Data.
In “Descent part 2”, Data is emotionally manipulated into hurting and nearly killing Geordi. This causes him to nearly destroy the emotion chip- the way to have what he’s yearned for his whole life- because he loves Geordi so much that he refuses to risk the possibility of hurting him again.
But Geordi stops him, because he loves Data too much to let him do it, despite what happened.
Then in “Interface”, when Geordi disobeys orders to do a very dangerous life-risking thing, Data comes in to convince him not to. “I cannot allow you to endanger your well-being.” But when he understands how important this is to Geordi, Data stays, disobeying orders, to help and watch over him.
When Geordi tells Data to increase the risk, which could end up killing him, the emotional distress on Data’s face as he decides whether to or not is clear. “You are putting me in a very difficult position.” He decides to do it, because Geordi asked him to.
But considering what they went through together two episodes before, that has to be weighing on Data’s mind during this. He’s again in the position of disobeying Picard, and doing something that will hurt and possibly kill Geordi.
But Data loves Geordi too much to stop him from doing this, even though it causes him distress to help. And Geordi loves him so much that he makes a useless attempt at getting Data off the hook afterwards.
I just find it great episode placement to have these two stories so close together.

[tv review] tng 6x26 & 7x01 "descent" (1993)
6x26 "descent, part 1"
i think this two-parter was the only tng vhs i had besides “the best of both worlds,” so there’s a bit of a theme there obviously. though descent just isn’t remotely in best of both worlds’ league.
this is one of those two-parters where i very strongly prefer the first part to the second. which isn’t to say the first part is amazing or anything, but idk, the enterprise investigating strange new developments with the borg leading up to a season-ending cliffhanger is a lot more interesting to me than lore doing lore things. though this is for sure one of the better lore stories imo. i just don’t think that character ever really worked as well as they thought he did, unfortunately.
also, one thing that never really jumped out at me in all my previous viewings is that it’s frankly super disappointing that captain picard experiences uncertainty & guilt about his decision in “i, borg” to, y’know, not do a genocide. i’d really rather picard stick to his guns on that sort of thing when he already got it right. b-rank
7x01 “descent, part 2”
a bit of a step down from part 1, as previously mentioned. like, i do love how genuinely effective dr. crusher was in command of the enterprise. she was a strong & decisive leader in a very difficult situation, and it’s a pretty great moment for a character who doesn’t get very many of them! but the rest of the episode is kind of just our heroes shuffling back & forth between a cell and a torture chamber, and data eventually breaking free of lore’s control to help them escape. hugh also helps.
like, idk, it’s not a bad episode or anything, but it really doesn’t feel like it delivers on the promise of a newer, scarier borg threat whatsoever. a lot of people complain that voyager nerfed the borg, but tng clearly got there first. b-rank

star trek update time!! last night* we watched tng's "descent part ii" and ds9's "the homecoming." *times changed i am typing this at fuck o'clock but it will have been last night when this posts
descent part ii (tng):
this was...a little underwhelming
it's kind of unclear whether all borgs are just like this now or whether there is still a sexy collective of cube-shaped inevitability out there somewhere. at the end of the episode i still didn't know. it was great to see hugh again though
i think before riker and worf stormed the castle riker should have given him a little kissy. for luck.
OBVIOUSLY i am distressed at poor data getting brainwashed and HURTING HIS BESTIE!!! but i think they did it backwards. i think they should have had him torture picard and then be unable to shoot geordi. or actually no fuck picard anyway both things should have been geordi. but the final moment should have belonged to geordi because that's data's closest connection.
anyway, lore putting on the visor was EVIL. i was gasping and covering my mouth the entire time. it was definitely distressing, but even though we were lucky to get the little fallout we did, it still didn't feel like enough. data faced absolutely no consequences for his actions and we didn't even get into whether or not they WERE his actions
i'm glad geordi stopped him from destroying the chip though. it is horrifying to me that data has now been traumatized by the very idea of having emotions. dream ruined...
i'm almost sure lore will be back. i know what happens to data in picard :/
also, CAPTAIN BEVERLY!!!! i was so thrilled for her. i loved watching her sit in that chair. i really hated that one guy who kept talking down to the female ensign though. fuck off, dude, beverly is captain, we're doing feminism rn
the homecoming (ds9):
so they labeled this episode "the homecoming (1)" and the episode after it "the circle (2)" which mean it's a two-parter episode but not one that's immediately apparent...so i sort of felt a little cheated when it ended "early." i think if you're gonna have a two-parter they should have the same name and be labeled with part i and part ii. just a thought. i know enterprise does this too and now i understand what those numbers mean!! baffling...
anyway, i fucking loved it. like, i could go on and on. just watch me.
i of course have to talk about kira in this episode. she is always so determined to do right by her people which of course is awesome i love watching her go but more importantly she was SOOOO HOT. MA'AM. MA'AM
the outfit. the new hairdo where they slick it down at the sides to make you think she took a little off there. her and o'brien laughing at that cardassian together 😳 their action hero moment..........
i love also that all of that was perfectly platonic. she was like do i look sexy enough to pull this off and he responded in the affirmative and it never felt like he was running around on his wife. picard, take notes
actually, this episode sort of makes me remember why o'brien is such a natural choice for ds9...in addition to probably being the one who was in the transporter room when picard was beamed back after his capture and torture by the cardassians (he is always very quick to point out to sisko that he's LITERALLY SEEN how they treat their prisoners when we need a reminder of the stakes, so it obviously made a strong impression on him), we have that one episode of tng i always forget about because it's all the way back in season fucking 4 where o'brien is like, it's not you i hate cardassian, i hate what i became because of you. he's seen the cardassians at war and he's been personally affected by it, and you get the feeling that he's also well aware that his experiences, while bad, are just the tip of the iceberg of awful.
and like, it adds so much depth to sending HIM into enemy territory with kira. she warned him they might not come back, and he has a wife and child at home, and he STILL WENT. it was an extremely brave thing to do, and remembering his history in this context leads me to interpret this as something he felt he HAD to do, morally
actually, to veer off a second...i really always love how sisko tries his best to throw his weight behind kira, to protect her and support her. like, him giving that low whistle and going "man i wish you hadn't told me what you wanted that shuttle for" but then going to like dax for example and trying to spitball an idea to make it work. he threads the needle of what's morally correct with what's legally permissible as far as his job goes really well, it never feels like he just pulls the correct solution out of his ass, he always struggles with it
but the thing is HE WENT TO DAX. and dax ALREADY KNEW. he then, to back to o'brien, went to o'brien to work out a plan and o'brien had ALREADY COME UP WITH ONE. there is something so incredibly cathartic about seeing all the starfleet guys in particular triangulating around kira and backing her up for no other reason than they care about her and it's the right thing to do.
anyway, i havent even TOUCHED on the rest of the episode yet. i really could go on and on about kira.
okay, other things! whatever quark is doing was really funny. i wish he had actually given his brother a fair share of the profits, but i guess the new leaf he's turning over doesn't extend that far. his whole sections with odo and kira were hilarious though - the whole episode was actually pretty charming when it wasn't being serious.
i kind of had that guy down as either not really being who they thought he was or not being as brave and cool as they thought he was and i was right. i DO think he should be allowed to retire even if bajor does need him...ten years in a labor camp and straight back to work but now it's political? not my ass. i'd never lift a finger again unless i had to.
ESPECIALLY BECAUSE HE'S REPLACING KIRA??? like ofc i know she isn't leaving but what a plot twist...no fucking good deed goes unpunished.
speaking of dax, sorry, her hair looks EVEN WORSE in season 2........i really hope in season 3 and onward they fix it :(
jake got sooo tall. wah. he's growing like a weed. i really loved the bit where sisko comes in from a long day, yawning, and then he's got to comfort his son about being dumped for being human because of political extremists. and he doesn't slack off on the dad job anymore than he does on the starfleet job. it was such a chuckle earlier in the episode when sisko was panicking because they were too young to do anything but talk in public places only, and now it's like. sad.
quark getting branded was ofc horrible but it WAS really funny that bashir had to more or less threaten him to get him to hold still enough to heal him. king. i love julian sm
i feel like the cardassians giving up their prisoners was a little TOO easy. like. it didn't strike me until just now but i feel like that was sooo easy like everything worked out as smooth as butter. some shit is Happening
TONIGHT: tng's "liaisons" and ds9's "the circle," neither of which i have read the summaries for. i have a feeling our run of pretty solid tng episodes is over for now bc we've switched seasons but SIGH hope springs eternal.

Data, corrupted.
TROI: When exactly did you feel this other emotion?
DATA: It was just after I had killed the Borg. I looked down at his body. I felt something.
TROI: If you had to give this feeling a name, what would you call it?
DATA: I believe it was pleasure.
Tumblr media
CROSIS: You are not like the others. You do not have to be destroyed. You can be assimilated.
DATA: I do not wish to be assimilated.
Tumblr media
CROSIS: Resistance is futile. You will not resist what you've wanted all your life. I was like you once. Without feeling. But the One helped me. He can help you too. He can help you find emotion. Have you ever felt a real emotion, Data?
Data continues working, but for some reason he feels compelled to answer Crosis' questions.
Tumblr media
DATA: Yes. On Ohniaka Three, I was forced to kill a Borg. I got angry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CROSIS: You enjoyed it. That surge of emotion inside you as you watched the life drain from your victim. It was unlike anything you've ever felt before.
Tumblr media
CROSIS: You'd like to feel that way again.
DATA: Yes.
CROSIS: You'd do anything to feel that way again, even if it meant killing someone.
DATA: No. That would not be ethical.
CROSIS: You don't sound very sure of yourself. Is your ethical programme functioning? Data? Do you have a friend?
DATA: Yes. His name is Geordi.
CROSIS: If it meant that you could feel emotions again the way you did on Ohniaka Three, would you kill your friend? Would you kill Geordi?
