What made The Sinister Duo take a liking to Esmé (during The Slippery Slope)? - NCT

This has been something I've been thinking about quite recently - what was it about Esmé that compelled The Sinister Duo to act the way they did towards her?
We obviously know that Esmé had told The Duo about her despicable acts of The Ersatz Elevator... but what if she told them more? What if she told them all about what happened between her and Olaf, every step of the way, from TEE to TSS?
Assuming this to be true, we get the following theory:
THEORY: The Duo manipulated Esmé into breaking up with Olaf.
Here's a few points about this:
The Duo and Esmé BOTH want the sugar bowl for the same reason - power. Olaf, however, has tunnel-vision on the Baudelaire (and, to an extent, Quagmire) fortune(s) and fails to recognise the importance of the Sugar Bowl.
The Duo get Esmé to agree with them on this point - and it works:
The Duo use the common ideology/goal of the Sugar Bowl to get Esmé to FOCUS on the Sugar Bowl, and GET RID OF OLAF - The Duo convince Esmé to see their point [which she does in TPP] - Olaf is of no use - in trying to get the Sugar Bowl AND as a fire-starting member of The Schism.
In The Penultimate Peril, Esmé realises the 'value' of The Duo's words, as she finally dumps Olaf.
Interestingly, this makes it VERY clear that The Duo can read (and predict) the emotions of others like a book; this is something they use to their advantage: they know Esmé is disappointed and angry with Olaf and Olaf is angry with himself; he's trying and failing to please his girlfriend, and he takes his anger out on the Baudelaires, which we really see during the 'shouty bit' of TGG:
"YES, I KNOW YOU WANT THE SUGAR BOWL! I'M GOING TO FIND IT FOR YOU, I PROMISE!" - Olaf to Esmé, TGG

atwq book four thoughts
guess who somehow got a lot of free time yesterday and made the bold decision to finish reading the last atwq book? me!
guees who feels like they jinxed qwerty’s fate from the previous book of being arrested, but alive, even though i bet daniel handler planned it from the start? still me!
guess who is rather upset netflix accidentally gave a clue/spoiler on the identity of hangfire?
also me.
okay, so first off, to get something out of the way. i love this book. i really do. it had me on suspense every chapter.
theodora figured out qwerty was in vfd (...when did she figure out? not long after sharon reveal herself as a fake vfd member? or during the period she and lemony weren’t speaking to each other?), and god she really was willing to take the blame on being qwerty’s killer. did she think maybe she once again screw up, but this time there was no going back because the screw up got someone killed? after all she seem to selfishly went to break qwerty out for a good evaluation. maybe she thought if things went different, he would still be alive. and given the schism happened, vfd while not divided yet, this is like a sign on how another librarian’s death in the long, long future, will be blame on an innocent party and things go to hell again in the pursuit of justice and truth.
also, ghede and gifford also knew of the coup as well? or at least knew the sbg was doing something and they’re like let them do this shit and we can watch it’s gonna benefit us in the long run’. also, holy shit olaf name drop take two with beatrice herself! i didn’t think while knowing each other young mean they actually hanged out with one another to think they’re possibility friends. this puts the opera night even worse. beatrice must have knew olaf’s parents. with my headcanon of olaf parents being caring parents to olaf and used their connections to get their son back earlier than others, this is just awful.
getting back on track from the mess that is vfd there’s a murder on a train (agatha christie ahoy!). i admit several weeks ago i made the decision to watch snowpiercer and train to busan so i couldn’t really take the murder on the orient express shout out clearly and kept on thinking of the wild willy wonka and the chocolate factory/snow piercer theory. and zombies in south korea. 
all the damn sbts kids just thought it great to share the one brain cell to be on the same train (pip and squeak just follow in their taxi; cleo and jake had to travel through time in the dilemma to catch up with them). ornette got her time to shine with her artistic/sculpting skills and there’s some light on the subject of the lost family (of course it’s a fire that took ornette’s mom life. fires seems to be a way to kill a lot of parents). i was right to call her gung-ho working with lemony, she just agreed to make fake bb statues for moxie and kellar and was like ‘oh shit the two are sharing a brain cell. hangfire could figure something is up what have i done’ and had to make something else to give to lemony. i uh..wonder if seth has a reason to draw her baseball cap all...fuzzy. just a weird question.
kellar’s sister lizzie shows up. i’m going to be honest. she has the bad luck of appearing last and under two disguises that went over my head (she sure fooled me!). i do have some thoughts that surround her and the haines family, but that needs me to re-read the last two books to make sure i’m not imagining something . will say lizzie is much younger and shorter than i thought given her first illustration. i hope maybe a re-read will make me get some new insight on her. also, hi sally murphy. i’m glad lizzie got out with maybe your help (i mean, why else would she want to high tail it out of there).
the identity of qwerty’s killer was something i should have seen coming due to how the mitchum parents are more subdue. i want to slap stew’s parents. they spend all their time bickering they only got their shit together to see how their ‘precious’ son is really a bully and killer and working with the villian under their damn noses. i almost feel sorry for them because shit stew more or less blackmail his parents into covering the crime but at the same time...this call could have been avoid if you pay attention to how your son isn’t the angel you think he is..and you two are still fighting with one another please get your priorities straight i beg you. i admit i almost want to slap stew but i don’t slap kids, and i think if i exist in the snicket world i would get murder first by him.
qwerty’s death and the fact he’s a vfd member just hurt me so bad and i’m still kind of grieving over him. for one, i felt like i should have seen qwerty being part of vfd coming. he’s a sub-librarian. while not a sub-sub-librarian, the fact is qwerty is such so damn helpful to lemony i should have seen he was just doing his best to help lemony because theodora wasn’t honestly...wasn’t doing a good job at a chaperone. but he couldn’t blow away his cover because he wasn’t supposed to interfere in the apprenticeship and honestly he was just happy to be a sub-librarian helping children find what they would love reading.
but qwerty isn’t the only death in this book. i got to copy-paste something from an old atwq post in feburary 8, something i made as a joke, because oh boy, this part is the one negative i have honestly.
he tried to pretend to be her father! i know his voice mimicry is basically akin to juni cortez’s mimicry, but this is just cruel had ellington been there.
about a week later, i made the decision to rewatch netflix asoue. now, the first time i watch season two [edit lmao i actually don’t remember if it was season two i think i hated season two so much i could have blur two and three together i got to rewatch the show again definitely. edit two: okay, i’m certain it was season two i’m 98% certain it was was a pause and read easter egg that’s why i couldn’t remember what season exactly damn easter eggs] i honestly was like ‘so they gave nero a last name. coolio. feint isn’t a surname i was expecting but this is the netflix show this probably isn’t canon to the books’.
on the rewatch, after the austere academy part two ended, i realized something is...off, with nero now. he’s mocking people. and his voice, while not mimicking them, is like...it’s like nero could have inherit mimicry from someone but it never went through. or maybe he did got it but it’s not at its full potential without the proper teaching of someone with the skill...like a father, perhaps?
so the kronk meme is playing in my mind, but it’s the edit of him saying ‘oh no, it’s all coming together’. and given patrick warburton also voice kronk, it felt more like lemony snicket decided to materialize right behind me, be an asshole, and thought it funny to do a commentary on my possible realization hangfire, in the netflix show at least, couldn’t keep his dick in his pants and bore a bastard son in an adulterous affair and ellington has a half brother in the world she doesn’t know about and i hope she never learns about.
(given barrymore feint is just a cameo of barry sonnenfeld, i guess the bullshit gene i talked about in another post regarding a theory who netflix!h is should be renamed the feint gene.)
so reading the third book, and especially this book, i kept a close eye on any mentions to ellington’s dad and hangfire’s behavior. i kept on saying in my mind ‘please don’t be who i think you are’. and bam. armstrong feint is hangfire. i feel like if netflix didn’t have the need to make an atwq reference in nero’s surname, and if i was smart enough to have the book clues smack me in the face (i feel there are clues somewhere, and hangfire dropped all pretenses and just being ‘himself’ in book two was one), i wouldn’t be so angry and upset by this reveal. i more or less got spoil and put the pieces together due to an adaptation, and i should have known better than to do a re-watch while reading atwq. i should have consider the possibility of easter eggs to atwq.
anyway, lemony snicket thought it great to kill hangfire by feeding him to a copy bombinating beast (the tadpoles!!). with ellington right freaking there. with most of his sbts friends there to witness. moxie can’t even look lemony in the eye anymore (no more best friends anymore). everything happened just like that and after finishing the book and taking a walk around the living room, i have to say hangfire is a good villain. he achieved his goal of getting the bombinating beast, even if it’s a copy. he’s a very competent villain who succeed in almost every book in some way or form. he played everyone like a puppet and was a threat that is more akin to tmwabbnh and twwhbnb’s level of villainy. kudos to you hangfire i’m impressed. 
hangfire totally got it coming too. however, i do feel...hurt in his death, if only for ellington’s sake. during the walk because i realize ellington reminded me of a character from a different fandom i’m in. there’s some differences that i won’t get into (it’s...complicated for the other fandom), but they’re cut from almost the same cloth: teenage girls with shitty fathers who are using them for their own selfish goals. thoughts for ellington and her future formed faster for me than for the other atwq kids as a result:
post-canon!ellington (a few days later when she finally gets her stuff figure out), has a simple list. 1: avoiding anyone with a vfd tattoo or give shady lemon vibes -ellington split asap after she and kit broke out and have 100% certainly no one is after them, but not before stealing some things from kit, one being notes of vfd volunteers (she thinks). 2: find a new place to live. 3: figure out a new name that isn’t an anagram, because the inhumane society once they heard the news, is probably going to try to get her if they get wind she is hangfire’s daughter and possible ‘successor’. ellington wants nothing to do with the bombinating beast. she never wants to see the statue or anything similar, or hear the words again.
adult!ellington (under a fake name of course), while accepting all that happened, hasn’t forgive lemony snicket. yes, her dad was a villain. yes, she finally understand her dad isn’t the kind naturalist and man, and used her for the biggest ‘what’ event of her life that is also a very selfish goal. many times in the past though, ellington wonders if she missed any signs of her dad’s descend to who he eventually became, or if he hid it very well to where he was wearing two masks all this time, one hiding his true nature. ellington even wonders at one point, dad was going convince her to willingly work with him without the fake kidnapping and had to change his plans to something crueler.
ellington will never know for sure. this is why ellington can’t forgive lemony and will say it to face if they ever meet again. what ellington hates the most out of her father’s death is that she can never tell dad all of her feelings about his wrong doings. she can ask all the questions burning at the back of her mind, or yell her frustrations how terrible a father he is for faking his kidnapping and getting her to do his dirty work, getting her to use her loyalty of family to do things she would never do under normal circumstances. she ask questions and yells at the only photo left of armstrong feint...
and in the end, she knows he’ll never answer, and it hurts to deal with the unknown. adult!ellington doesn’t do the yelling and questioning to the photo as much. partly because she did ‘settle’ on what might be an possible answer, but mostly because the photo is pretty faded to where it’s less ‘armstrong feint’ and more ‘hangfire’. once in awhile though, she slips up like old times.
adult!ellington with her new life (she travels a lot, pays in cash most of the time, and has no set resident; she still love coffee) tends to think of the past, especially when it came to what she had with lemony snicket. did lemony like her? was she just a question in need of solving? ellington admits to possibly liking him, but it was so long ago maybe she just thinks she liked him to have a ‘positive’ memory of the boy she haven’t seen in years that she kind of wants to see again, if only to yell at him for robbing her of something important. his name lands on her radar a lot, twice from the daily punctilio. the first one was learning of lemony snicket’s crimes, and it was an accident.
the second time, she learn of his death, though she read the daily punctilio on purpose in hopes of a name drop. adult!ellington ended up finding some children’s book, and made the mistake of going to the back of it and find a photo of lemony snicket. not really though. lemony is hiding his face (ellington hates it) and she buys it to know what it’s about. it spiral to where she bought the next two books because she wants to know if the baudelaires orphans are real (and because lemony doesn’t seem the same anymore from his writings). ellington settles on real when she pulls out kit snicket’s notes she stolen and cross references names, and even travels to the locations to them to make sure. after the third book publication, the series goes on ‘hiatus’ due to the daily punctilio and their announcement. ellington doubts he’s dead, but couldn’t help attend the funeral. ellington is certain lemony snicket is alive, because she convinced she saw him at his own funeral.

i feel like the fire starting part of the vfd schism is really unexplored. all we have are the man with a beard but no hair and the woman with hair but no beard that sort of resemble leaders, but other than that its mostly the fire stopping side of the schism that we hear of actual individuals working together and having a place to be. wouldn’t it be cool to hear about where the fire starting side reside? whether they have a hideout, or plans? the man with a beard but no hair and the woman with hair but no beard seem pretty smart to me and it would make sense for them to bring all of the firestarters together, unless they believe that they’re better off alone since more people would most likely bring them down. and if the firestarters really did have a “safe place”, they would’ve probably burned it down themselves. and lemony hints at the firestarting side of vfd to be made up of uneducated people, but the problem with this is that lemony is an unreliable narrator. in fact his point doesnt make much sense since tmwabbnh & twwhbnb seem to be somewhat intelligent.  basically what im trying to say is that the fire starting side of vfd is somewhat unexplored and it would be nice to have more information on whether they have a secret location or spies or plans.

Is it assumed that the man with a beard but no hair and the woman with hair but no beard started the Baudelaire fire? I always thought that Olaf more than likely didn’t start the fire simply because he loves bragging to the Baudelaires in particular about the terrible things he has done so it seems like he would be more than happy to tell them he did it. I don’t know what the popular theory is but I would love to hear people’s thoughts especially because it’s been awhile since I’ve read the book

You’re right: the Baudelaires did always assume it was Olaf. It isn’t until this part that the readers, at least, begin to question if Olaf actually committed the crime: 
Klaus knelt down beside his sister, and stared into the villain's shinyeyes. "You're the one who made us orphans in the first place," he said,uttering out loud for the first time a secret all three Baudelaires had keptin their hearts for almost as long as they could remember. Olaf closedhis eyes for a moment, grimacing in pain, and then stared slowly at eachof the three children in turn. 
"Is that what you think?" he said finally. 
"We know it," Sunny said. 
"You don't know anything," Count Olaf said. "You three children are thesame as when I first laid eyes on you. You think you can triumph in thisworld with nothing more than a keen mind, a pile of books, and theoccasional gourmet meal." He poured one last gulp of cordial into hispoisoned mouth before throwing the seashell into the sand. "You're justlike your parents," he said, and from the shore the children heard KitSnicket moan.
You’re also right in saying that its strange that Olaf doesn’t brag about burning down their house. Think thats where most of the theories stem from coupled with the passage above. I don’t think people assume it was TMWABBNH and TWWHBNB but that’s a popular theory. If I remember correctly, Snicket Sleuth has a theory as well.

Do you have your own opinion who really burned Baudelaire house down?
I have my own opinion on positively anything, provided that you ask about it.
There are a few options I can see here. The first one – the Sinister Duo did it. TMWABBNH and TWWHBNB that is. These two seem to be the most wicked and menacing members of the Fire-Starting side, they could have easily done it.
The second option and the one I low-key headcanon is that the Baudelaire mansion was burned down by their fellow volunteers. V.F.D. has been using this scheme for decades, remember? The Denouement house was burned down the same way, the Snicket house, probably, the house of the powder-faced triplets in Count Olaf’s acting troupe… This is the most credible option, as for me, and it really fits the style of the ASOUE universe: the Baudelaires find themselves involved in the same thing that made them orphans in the first place. (Off-topic, I regard V.F.D. as a metaphor for (adult) life, which is probably obvious, but still)
And the last and most disturbing one, the Baudelaire parents could have burned their own house down. We know that they sent their children away that day, which means they knew they were in danger. The danger, however, could have been some of their enemies. They tried to stop them by starting a fire, but Bertrand didn’t manage to escape.

If The Sinister Duo found Olaf so useless, why didn't they jail him during his trial in The Penultimate Peril? (NCT)
Before answering the question, we must first think of the reasons why they found him USELESS and then why they found him USEFUL, before weighing the two to come to a conclusion:
Reasons Olaf is USELESS:
He is only focused on the Baudelaire fortune. Not even the Quagmire one, solely on Baudelaire revenge.
Speaking of Quagmire fortune, Olaf lost Duncan & Isadora to Hector's self-sustaining hot-air mobile home. The Duo worked quite hard to capture their parents, as TMWABBNH clearly states:
"After we went to all that trouble to restrain their parents in Peru."
He doesn't pay much attention to/realise the value of the sugar bowl.
He's become/been famous! Olaf has had 'Wanted' posters all over the city during the events of TEE - if The Duo knew that Esmé moved into the apartment at 667 Dark Avenue, and they themselsves live in the city, they DEFINITELY knew about Olaf's 'Wanted' posters.
As a sub-point to the above point, Olaf is dating the city's 6th most important financial advisor: her life is DEFINITELY NOT secret a from the press/The Daily Punctilio. He's wanted and they know it.
Reasons Olaf is USEFUL:
The Duo and Olaf both want to eliminate the Baudelaires. Except... Olaf wants to steal their money, first. The Duo have their plan to steal the Snow Scouts' fortunes, so they don't need the Baudelaire's, Quagmire's, or any other fortune of their enemies.
The Duo, especially at first, see Olaf as a pawn in getting the sugar bowl. This means they want(ed) him to get it... for them.
The Duo know that Olaf has direct access to Esmé's fortune - this, combined with her sheer lust for the sugar bowl, makes their [O + E's] coupling a great asset to The Duo.
Olaf is still a fire-starter - The Duo have brainwashed him and they know it.
So, given that there are more reasons Olaf's useless than useful, why do they still let him off the hook?
Well, there are actually a few reasons:
The Duo, by the time of TPP, know that Olaf and Esmé have broken up - by letting Olaf go [i.e. not jailing him], they give him a chance of reconciling with Esmé, so the Squalor fortune can still be used for the purpose of getting the Sugar Bowl.
The Duo know that Olaf is still a fire-starter (well, on that side of the schism) so they don't jail him because they need as many allies as possible, as they keep getting "foiled by those irritating volunteers".
The Duo are giving Olaf [yet] a[nother] second chance at being their underling. By letting him go, they want him to come crawling back to them.
Besides, I think that because The Duo were there, Olaf was 'set free'; if it were only Justice Strauss acting in loco iudex (in the role of a judge), the Baudelaires would've either:
Gone to jail with Olaf 'in light of recent evidence'
Been 'set free' despite all of their inadvertent, arguably accidental/necessary crimes.
Likely the latter, in my opinion.

Quote Debunk: "Our last guardian locked it in a safe after she lost her wife"¬ Isadora Quagmire, The Austere Academy
Here's a theory behind the meaning of Isadora's line in The Austere Academy:
Karen and Quentin Quagmire were presumed dead, (for some inexplicably Snickety reason; maybe, like Lemony, they too were on the run) forcing Duncan, Quigley and Isadora into the care of certain guardians. [I think they had a parallel situation to the Baudelaires, but not exactly the same one.]
They were supposed to end up with a volunteer guardian, but TMWABBNH and TWWHBNB interjected (the way Olaf does in the flashback in TBB:P2). This is the Quagmires' "Bad Beginning" equivalent. (Although, it does make you wonder, what did the Quagmires do to The Sinister Duo to deserve such a heartless vengeance?)
Then, during the events of The Reptile Room, they are STILL with their villain, so Karen and Quentin try and get hold of Monty to find out what happened, why it happened, and why their children are not with him/any other volunteer yet.
In The Wide Window, we see them in the woods, before flying a plane over Lake Lachrymose. Maybe the children were supposed to be with Josephine at the same time as the Baudelaires, but The Duo weren't having any of it.
Anyway, by the time The Miserable Mill happens, the parents come home to their children (I think by this point either Poe has given up or the parents have revealed themselves to be alive) before the mysterious arsonist (don't know who) kills them off for REAL, this time, with (as we see in The Slippery Slope) Quigley going into hiding. I think that Mr Poe now knows their parents are dead, and they really do need a guardian, but he's struggling to find one, until he gets: S Theodora Markson.
It's at this point that Duncan and Isadora (presumably) go to Stain'd-by-the-Sea and live with a (seriously) depressed Theodora, whose wife, Sharon Haines, has died. The Quagmires' then stumble upon TIHOSO [in a safe], before Theodora dies (my best guess is The Duo kill her, but she could also have committed suicide out of sheer sadness).
By then Mr Poe can't find anyone and/or can't be bothered, so he just dumps them at Prufrock, where all the orphans join forces

with netflix asoue playing up ishmael’s importance, i ended up wondering where book!ishmael is on the vfd ladder of superiority and authority, and where he is on the ladder could play into beatrice and bertrand leaving the island. i think i got something reasonable more reasonable than netflix:
one. ishmael taught gregor and ike's mother when she was in still in high school. i’m...pretty sure chemistry class is offer in high school and college/uni. since mrs. anwhistle an orphan and part of the original schism generation (osg), the lowest age she can be is a teen in high school. ishmael therefore is in a section of the osg i call ‘pre-original schism generation’ or p-osg, because while part of the osg, they’re actually older than most osg members. ishmael being a p-osg member means he lots more experience than characters met in asoue who are part vfd, excluding tmwabbnh and twwhbhb (i assumed they’re osg members, but maybe they’re older than i think they are).
two. Being a teacher, it means vfd found ishmael trustworthy to have authority over a group of young people in a small setting. i’m actually going to take note from netflix!ishmael and say book!ishmael is also the (missing) principal of prufrock prep. realistically, a teacher can become a principal if they study hard enough and get that degree, and because i can’t think of any educator in the series (former or present) who can fit the bill. Since vfd has some volunteers at the school (carmelita’s interaction with the librarian in tua), vfd could have decided to trust ishmael to be in charge of a ‘vfd location’, and ergo, more authority and extended power, and presumably did a good ‘job’ before giving power to the vp (nero, maybe a predecessor).
in regard to the island, and the mutiny, i don’t think the mutineers wanted violence, but i think some islanders were very upset with beatrice and bertrand’s actions about wanting to build the passageway to anwhistle aquatic. i do think bertrand is right ishmael’s fear mongering halted construction and is making islanders turn against them from fear of the mycelium. 
this section here is pure theory territory: The island went through a schism happening around the time of the anwhistle aquatic mess. In tua, Jacques mentions being sixty feet under water. with or without the idea fiona’s mother  dead from the fire, one thing is certain: fernald just left the queequeg, and jacques is there to replace him. i think when beatrice and bertrand left, the fire happened, or just recently happened. no one, not even the couple themselves, knew of the fire. beatrice and bertrand wouldn't make a tunnel if they knew. it would explain why jacques says he is going to communicate with beatrice; she and bertrand by extension, are sort of behind on news. lemony being alive (since i assumed beatrice thought he died given she was considering calling violet ‘lemony’) and anwhistle aquatic getting destroyed are the two most important events they need to know. and there’s three paths with one outcome:
a. beatrice just got back to the city and is recently married to bertrand. they have no idea of the anwhistle aquatic fire and lemony being alive. jacques tells them in person after violet’s birth.
b. beatrice and bertrand are their way back to the city and jacques’ info got lost or reach ishmael instead (since ishmael knows of the anwhistle aquatic fire in the end). jacques still tells them in person after violet’s birth.
c. the mutiny is getting to the highest point and jaqcues not knowing this, accidentally gave ishmael the information he needed to help the mutineers/gain power, leading to beatrice and bertrand getting voted off kick off the island, and jacques realize his message never got through to them until after violet’s birth and needs a crash course update himself on what the heck happened.
outcome: beatrice and bertrand learn from jacques that lemony is alive but out of the country, and everyone accepts what has happen. klaus isn’t name after lemony because everyone knows lemony is still alive. 
backtracking back to the mutiny, half were upset with beatrice and bertrand for making too many changes that could lead to danger, half trusted the two volunteers. ishmael showing up -being in charge of groups of people before and someone of the p-osg, meaning he know how vfd was before it became a mess- it was a sign for the mutineers to take their chance. ishmael has more years of experiences the two b’s have on their belt combined. they spill their worries, and ishmael agree to help them. ishmael resorts to fear mongering, which works because ishmael ‘knows better’ due to his age.
it works too well, because now people are not working out of protest, and there’s talk of violence. bertrand records the construction is getting halted due to Ishmael, and write downs his worries and hopes he and beatrice can soothes the fears and not getting banished from the island, which happens anyway. 
ishmael being facilitator also was supposed to restore the peace and ‘quiet’ vfdd and the world at whole lost, and it work for a good while until the end.

Could you write something on young Olaf? I loved the analysis you did on his house, maybe some contrast between then and now, from his perspective ?
Warning: some triggering themes.
There are two major periods here, I even have separate verses for them: Olaf before the opera and Olaf after the opera. As for the first one, I’ve shared some headcanons here. But pre-opera Olaf is hardly that interesting. The way I see it, he was absolutely normal, if a little too dramatic and prone to common mischief. But he was happy, he was content with his life, and then…
And then we move to post-opera Olaf, and this is an interesting specimen. I wrote many things concerning this time of his life, some headcanons about depression, insecurities, romantic relationships, that sort of things. He was traumatized, he was seriously depressed, probably suicidal (and I do headcanon that very hard), and his coping mechanisms weren’t good at all. Countless one night stands, excessive drinking, possible drug abuse, toxic relationships… 
He needed company, even if for a short time. He needed someone to love him, to need him, because after his friends had betrayed him, he was all alone. Now, I like the idea of TMWABBNH and TWWHBNB mentoring him and probably acting as his guardians, as Netflix suggested, but it doesn’t fit my headcanons at all, and those were established before season three, so I don’t include it. I do see them forcing him to set some fires, though, even if he didn’t really mind. But I have a separate request for meta about fires, so I’ll continue this idea there. 
He still loved Kit, but forgiving her seemed impossible. He tried to make something out of his theatrical career, but it didn’t work and he wasn’t paid much, and whatever he earned he spent on booze. I already mentioned it somewhere (honestly, I have scraps of these things scattered around my blog, I should finally collect them). 
As for the contrast between then and now, the most important thing is that he really shut himself off from the world. Olaf used to be more emotional in his youth, he felt things on a deeper level, and as his rage outbreaks get worse by the canon timeline, his other emotions fade, so that there is nothing left in him except for sorrow, hatred for the world and craving for revenge. He still needs company, but he doesn’t need to be loved, like, really loved – he wants people to adore him, he wants to boss them around, that’s it. He becomes more violent, ruthless, he stops caring about others (which he still did in his youth). The difference is striking.
And of course, he is barely recognizable in canon. Alcohol abuse, smoking and a very unhealthy style of living in general always leave a mark. I headcanon his hair turning gray by the age of 30, it might have started before he was 25. And obviously, he hates it, even though he still calls himself handsome. He hates it and that’s one of the reasons his hygiene is so terrible – he knows nothing will help him, but he also knows that women (mostly) still fall for him. 
In my portrayal, young Olaf is dark in a depressed sense. He is angry all the time, he is broody, but man, is he emotional. He feels things intensely, though these things are almost always painful. Canon Olaf is dark in an evil sense. And that’s the main difference.

4. Have you made any outright changes to the canon material in order to write your muse the way you wanted (entire scenes you chose to omit, chapters you say never existed, things you assume were never said, etc.)?
There are three versions of Olaf and I prefer to say that the movie one never existed. However, considering the canon of the books, I generally try to follow it. It is a great, layered character, and I believe that neither his villainous side, nor his good aspects (which hardly qualify as a side) should be ignored. Deep inside there might be a profoundly depressed person who suffered a great ordeal, but there is also an arsonist, a murderer and a child abuser, who brought a lot of pain and misery upon others. I would never ignore that.
The villainous laugh in TGG, though, is incredibly cringeworthy, albeit hilarious. 
10. For book muses, what is your muse’s favorite scene? Why? Can you provide a short excerpt?
Basically, the entire The End. The death scene would be an obvious choice, and it is and will aways be one of my favorite literary moments of all time, but I would go with these two.
Count Olaf looked out at the horizon again, and smiled at the storm as if it were an old friend coming to visit. “Yes, those things might happen,” he said with a wicked smile. “But what are you going to do about it, orphans?”
“No!” screamed the Baudelaires in unison, but even the combined voices of the three children were not as loud as Count Olaf’s villainous laughter, and the facilitator never heard the children’s cry as he pulled the bright red trigger of this terrible weapon.”
To me both these scenes indicate his suicidal tendencies  lack of self-preservation. As he loses everything he held dear, he gets more and more unhinged, and I love the darkness of the tone. Leaving out his acknowledgement of how Ishmael sentenced himself and the whole island to death, what kind of person laughs while being shot? What kind of emotional hell must one suffer to smile calmly at the approaching storm? 
I’ve always seen and portrayed Olaf as a chronically depressed person, which is pretty much canon. It’s all here – his backstory, his behavioral patterns, substance abuse, the way he neglects his hygiene or his house, and the excerpts above really add up to this. He is mentally fucked up, there is hardly a more appropriate word for it. 
15. What plots/interactions leave you feeling protective of your muse?
Anything that has to do with TMWABBNH and TWWHBNB.  I’ve interacted with them outside of Tumblr, and god, I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Olaf. Any plots regarding La Forza del Destino also make me want to protect him from the treachery of the world, but alas. Usually I’m the sadistic kind of mun. I live for angst and the most terrible, heartbreaking or gory scenarios. He is a terrible man, who deserves everything bad that happens to him, except that one aforementioned moment. That he didn’t deserve.
