i’ve just got the lockhart valentines sidequest and i’m struggling knowing i’ll have to choose someone.
on previous sidequests i’ve always chosen barnaby but i kind of want to choose talbott. it’s like 50 / 50 on who to pick.
has anyone picked talbott or barnaby so they can give me advice on who to go for in this one ??

( For those wondering, this is from helping Liz find a new hobby in year 5, chapter 21. Liz painted a hippogriff. The bowtruckle painting was done by MC. I guess we finally found out what MC is bad at. I can only imagine what their drawings for care of magical creatures look like)

I haven't played yet and I don't know anything about this SQ, I just know it's a romance, right?
I'm with a very heavy work and study routine, I'm finishing my graduation, so it's hard to play hphm.
But honestly I'm not a big fan of romance SQs, I think they're very silly and far from what I imagine about my couple, which in this case is Danniel, my MC and Merula.
I hate those flashy things they do at the end, with fairies and a million flowers and hearts. And there's never a kiss 🤡
In my mind this is not how Merula expresses herself romantically, nor does Danniel. My couple likes simpler and more concrete things haha.
And in these SQ, in most of them, we don't spend the most time with our boyfriends and girlfriends, but solving random problems.
I used to get excited, but today I don't get excited anymore.
There are some romance SQs that I'm fond of, like the first date, the first Valentine's Day, the summer festival one, but these new ones are pretty bad.
I like the game's encounters more than the SQs.
The only one I'm waiting for now is the wedding, that's the only one that interests me 🤣

This recent tlsq (A gathering of old friends) is actually quite good tbh. I’ve never been a fan of Penny (bc of the Valentine’s Day tlsq and the love charm) but this has rlly made me like her again!
Plus, im kinda hoping that the whole ‘friend who was thought to be dead is actually alive’ thing is suppose to parallel the main story
I’m glad to hear that you enjoy it. Unfortunately though, I really can’t say the same. Admittedly, I didn’t play it myself, and I didn’t even bother to read the entire dialogue, but based on what I know… I know I couldn’t handle how absurd it is.
Alright, first of all, let’s address the whole “fake death” issue, and why I think it’s stupid in Scarlett’s case, yet I want it so badly for Rowan. The thing with fake deaths is that they have to have a purpose for the story. Otherwise, it’s just a cheap plot twist.
I want Rowan’s death to be fake not only because I want Rowan to be alive, but most importantly because it’s connected to the theory that you have to experience great loss to retrieve the treasure from the final Cursed Vault. This would explain why R was so obsessed about killing one of MC’s friends, and why they ultimately led to Duncan’s death. And by faking it, Rakepick satisfied R without anyone ACTUALLY dying. It could’ve served a purpose. It’s not the case with Scarlett at all. Scarlett being secretly alive adds absolutely nothing to Penny’s story. In fact, I’d say it diminishes her past development.
In the “Penny For Your Thoughts” SQ, Penny might drink the Forgetfulness Potion, proving that she doesn’t handle stressful situations well, or she might not drink the potion, proving that sometimes, she can be very strong. In my opinion, making Scarlett alive feels like saying that these decisions didn’t matter anyway. It’s especially odd if Penny did drink the potion, meaning that she doesn’t even remember Scarlett’s accident. And here, MC is a total idiot, saying: “If you still don't want to remember, that's all right. But if you've changed your mind, I'll tell you everything”. Like… if Penny doesn’t remember it, she can’t really decide whether or not she wants to remember it, don’t you think? And later on, we learn that Scarlett wanted Penny to think that she’s dead, so… WHY THE FUCK WE FEEL ENTITLED TO INTERVENE IN THIS SITUATION?
Moreover, I don’t like how this quest basically ignores Penny’s development through her friendship with Chiara. Her change of heart in the first Halloween TLSQ where Chiara was introduced was a pretty big deal. And yeah, I know that they added here a line: “I know we have friends who’d disagree, and I don’t love myself for feeling this way… But the truth is, many werewolves are monsters. Plain and simple. This may be one of them”. It just doesn’t sit right with me, considering that she’s friends with Chiara and knows that Chiara is indeed a werewolf. I’m pretty sure that whoever wrote this story forgot about Chiara entirely, and this line was added last-minute.
Seriously, Penny’s backstory (at least this part) was done and complete. It didn't need any additions. And no, I don’t buy that JC wanted to introduce it to new players who didn’t play the original SQ because it’s currently unavailable. JUST BRING THE ORIGINAL SQ BACK TO THE GAME! It should be much easier than writing the entire story which makes no sense.
And speaking of making sense, the logistics of Scarlett’s survival is… *sigh*
Here’s the thing: Scarlett is a Muggle. Muggles have significantly lower chances to survive werewolf wounds, so they rarely transform. Considering that Penny thought that Scarlett is dead, she had to be in rather bad shape. As a Muggle, she probably wouldn’t survive. On top of that, the Ministry might be incompetent in general, but they’re very serious about the Statute of Secrecy. I don’t believe they would give up so easily on investigating a werewolf attack where a Muggle was involved.
I never really liked Penny, and I don’t think anything could change it. However, I do think she was done dirty in this quest. Moreover, we were done dirty as well because instead of this pointless story, we could’ve had a brand-new story for one of our neglected friends. Or maybe we could spend time with a bigger group, discussing their experiences from the end of the war. Honestly, anything would be a better investment of time than bringing Scarlett back to life.
I’m sorry, I don’t want to sound harsh or bring you down. But this quest actually makes me upset.

Based on the TLSQ, can we get a headcanon on how Carewyn would be there for Penny reuniting with Scarlett and even how Carewyn would get along with Scarlett?
And for the sake of Mermay before it’s over, would you be willing to draw a picture of mermaid Scarlett?
Hahaha, so I’m playing the sidequest right now (had to finish the Valentine’s Day quest for the second go-round first 😂), and I will ABSOLUTELY draw Scarlett in time for the end of Mermay — but in regards to this quest, if it was canon for Carewyn…
Carewyn would get into a full-blown fight with Penny.
No, really, she would — because of this:
“Integrate? Penny, ‘integrating’ would mean they’d be opening themselves up to discrimination even when they’re not transformed! Werewolves already don’t get proper representation at the Ministry of Magic — they’re already seen as sub-human or worse! Their affairs are only ever handled by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, rather than the Department of Magical Law Enforcement…any misbehavior is settled by a hearing, rather than a full trial. They get almost no help with legal representation, all because once every month, they turn into a wolf-like creature which — although dangerous — could be properly treated if we just worked to make sure the Wolfsbane Potion was fully accessible to everyone, rather than just those few who can afford the ingredients! Maybe instead of demanding that all werewolves ‘integrate’ by making them expose themselves and condemning themselves to living as a second-class citizen in their own World — which IS THEIRS TOO, PENNY, most werewolves are witches and wizards! — maybe we could look at the Wizarding World and see what we could do to make it safer for everybody, including werewolves.”
To be clear, I actually like Penny having this unexamined prejudice, because let’s be honest, her original characterization did depict her as a kind of shallow thinker. By which I mean, not unintelligent — she gets good grades, especially in Potions…but she tends to put a happy face on things rather than deal with underlying problems (as we see with Beatrice), and she does tend to spend time with “interesting,” popular people rather than social outcasts (she only engages with MC after they get positive attention for standing up to Merula). It would kind of make sense that she wouldn’t understand the experience of being an outcast the same way characters like Rowan, Ben, or even Beatrice could. And that’s why Penny developing friendships with werewolves Chiara and Scarlett could start to open her eyes to their experiences and realize that she hadn’t given this whole thing as much critical thought as she should. Even when she “researched” werewolves, Penny only really read and paid heed to things that reinforced her worldview, and didn’t even consider the potential biases that the authors she’d found might’ve inserted into their works too. And sadly that’s something all of us should make sure we do — take the time to think critically and examine our own personal biases and latent prejudices.

They really need to either move the Crushed SQ down to Y4 or drop this new TLSQ with Annalena in Y5 instead even though it’s probably too late now since it’s coming out in 3 days. But still it makes no sense to meet Annalena before we hear about her. Plus if they move Crushed to Y4 at least it won’t be awkward to those who romanced Barnaby in the Celestial ball or the first Valentine’s TLSQ and especially for those who took Ismelda to the Celestial Ball since they can just headcanon she got over him before then.
I don't know why the Crushed TLSQ hasn't been moved down to Year 4 at this point. I mean, I'm pretty sure they moved Valentines Day I down to Year 4, right? At least, that's what one of my anons told me, once upon a time. Which is good because Penny, for instance, does not act like Year 5 Penny at all. The same thing applies here. Ismelda has been less "I will wear your face" lately, and more "Your face is stupid, but, let's do this again sometime." For a while now. The earlier we get the quest that kick-starts her bonding arc with MC, the better. That said, I can think of two potential reasons they may not wish to do this. 1) The Animagus Quest with Merula. I'm pretty sure it's meant to happen prior to Crushed, based on how Ismelda treats MC and how she seems to think about Merula - who is acting like her Year 5 self, by the way, so there's that. But 2) The Grand Staircase. It's a silly reason, I know, but the Grand Staircase wasn't unlocked until Year 5, and it's a featured location in the "Crushed" quest. But on the other hand, they featured the Muggle Studies classroom in the Teacher Appreciation TLSQ, and that can drop as early as Year 2. So maybe that reason doesn't matter anymore.

Judith and Talbott were slow dancing together, lost in their storybook fairytale world.
Out all of the dates they’ve been together, Judith found herself favoring this one above all others. Talbott made her feel things that she never felt before.
Beautiful.
Vulnerable.
Wanted.
Loved...
Something about the way he was looking at her felt intimate. It both scared and excited the Hufflepuff witch.
She truly felt like she had a chance with someone. To love and be loved.
But she was scared that this was all too good to be true. That this was all really a fairytale and she would wake up to her cold reality.
A reality that mocks her every time she looks in the mirror...
“Judith?” The dark skin girl mentally shook her head, looking up to find red eyes staring back at her.
“Y-Yes,” she quietly asked.
“Is everything alright? You seemed lost in thought,” Talbott said softly. Judith blushed at his intense gaze.
“N-no, no. I just zoned out for a bit,” she said. Talbott narrowed his eyes but didn’t say anything else. Judith soon felt her blush grow worse under Talbott’s stare. She felt tempted to move her head to hide her scar.
“W-What,” she finally asked in attempt to break the silence. Talbott blinked slowly, as if he was waking up from a daze.
“I’m sorry, Judith. It’s just that...” Talbott trailed off for a moment.
“You’re so beautiful, little bird,” he whispered, almost breathlessly. Judith felt her heart skip a moment, ducking her head so the Ravenclaw wizard couldn’t see her face.
“T-There’s no need to l-lie to me just because it’s V-Valentine’s Day,” she mumbled. Talbott frowned upon hearing this. The pair stopped dancing.
“I’m serious, Judith. You’re really beautiful, no matter the day...” Judith shoved him away. Pale gold eyes looked up, glaring at avian Animagus. A small shiver ran down his spine as the scar covering her left eye intensified the effect of her glare.
“Beautiful?! Talbott, LOOK AT ME! This burn scar is hideous! No wizard in his right mind would think I’m...” Her throat worked to swallow a lump the suddenly formed there. Red eyes narrowed as the young wizard stepped closer.
“That you’re what, Judith? That you’re beautiful? Gorgeous? Breathtaking? An angel on Earth?” Heat spread on the Hufflepuff’s cheeks as she struggled to find a response. Taking the opportunity, Talbott grabbed Judith by the waist. Judith ducked her head.
“T-Talbott... d-don’t-”
“Don’t tell me how to feel, Judith. I refuse to hear you talk down about yourself when you’re so much more than your physical looks,” Talbott said firmly. A firm but gentle hand cupped the girl’s cheek, forcing her to meet her date’s eyes. The two stood in silence as Talbott’s thumb slowly swiped across Judith’s bottom lip.
“T-Talbott,” Judith whispered.
“Mmm... yes, little bird,” Talbott answered in kind. A sharp canine peaked from behind plump, glossy lips, biting down on soft flesh of the lower lip. Talbott silently observed the small motion, feel warmth blossom on his cheeks and inside his chest.
“K-Kiss me... p-please...”

New Art, who dis?
So in case you guys are wondering, this is from my “Kendrick Lives AU”. For those who are unfamiliar, Kendrick is Judith’s dad. In this AU, she only lives with him seeing how Kendrick and her mother divorced after she turned 9. Mainly after when Sade purposely melted the left side of Judith’s face, leaving her with a prominent burn scar.
Around this time, her and Talbott are still not quite together. Mainly because of her fear that his feelings aren’t really. She’s very insecure when it comes to her face. Many guys bully her for it, telling her that she’ll forever be alone because of it.
In this AU, Judith is a bit more sensitive. While she wouldn’t outright cry, words do get to her a bit more and since these thoughts already exist in her head, people reaffirming her beliefs make it worse.
Even though Talbott has basically completely fallen for her at this point, she has a hard time believing that.

Nitpicks aside I say this SQ was pretty sweet. I usually like the Valentine’s stuff they have (and it’s also one of the few times I play anymore once I dropped the main storyline). I wanted to have some art accompanied but art block hit me like a truck, which sucks since tomorrow is Reina’s birthday and I’ll once again have nothing to show for it lol
