I couldn't agree more with this. From a young age I realized that my extended family disliked me. Sure when I would visit these people they would hug me and smile, but I knew it was ALL fake. When I was young my knowledge of the Spanish language was almost non-existent and they took advantage of this. It wasn't until middle when I decided to study Spanish. When I became more fluent in the language I started to noticed that my father's family did not want me around. I even noticed them become awkward around me whenever I attempted to talk to them. It wasn't until my cousins wife moved in with us, that I realized the full extent of the "fakeness" (is this even a word lol) anyways. One morning, as I was leaving for school, I overheard my cousins wife (whom will remain nameless) was talking to my grandmother. I heard them saying things such as; "Jessica es gorda y fea. Jessica es floja y sucia. Jessica es estupida" and blah blah blah. It was then that I walked into the room and smiled at them and of course all they did was smile, and to put the cherry on top, my grandmother starts to laugh and tells my cousins wife that I understand and speak really well. She then proceeded to say that you need to becareful about what you say around her. This was only one event that really affected in a negative way. Throughout the years, I tried to remain loyal to my "family" but not matter what I did and what I said, nothing was ever good enough for these people. I know it is wrong to give and expect to receive something back, but I never wanted material possessions. All I wanted was acceptance. But wanting acceptance was asking too much of these people. Over the years, I have been alienating myself from these people more and more, but it doesn't seem to work. I have now come to terms that I will ALWAYS be the horrible family member that everyone loves to talk bad about.
