He checks your social media again, going through the comments on your pictures, the likes, and who follows you before checking your DMs and most importantly, your message requests. Zyxyz’s Comprehensive Fanfic Rec List: 5/23 Update
yep! I'm back! update post once again shamelessly copypasteedited from the last time I did one of these here:
Way back in approx. December of 2013, I created a simple Word document to list my favorite fanfiction, so that if I wanted to reread something I could easily find it again. Five and a half years ago today, I uploaded it as a proper multifandom rec list, having realized how huge the scale of it had gotten and its potential as more than just a reference for my own use. And now, it’s time for the semiannual public version update once again, bringing the uploaded file up-to-date with my continuously-updated personal copy.
With this expansion, the list goes from 2,578 to 2,813 total fics, from 122 to 126 fandoms represented, and from ~53.4 million to over 58.7 million words. (There’s a stats section that goes into more detail on such things at the end of the list document, if you’re interested.)

And it was always hot in the summer lol)
I feel like killer is plotting to do something something to reader and I refuse to be told otherwise... Shenanigans and dusts murderous rage is bound to make an appearance at some point lol

I just want to say that I completely understand and support your decision to stop writing steddie fics after March 2024. It is really admirable that you can notice when you are close to burn out and see when you need a break from something that you have been completely immersed in for a long time. I will miss you dearly, but what you have already contributed to the fandom is just so amazing and masterful that I know I can go back to reread your works when need be.
For the stories that are in progress now, do you plan on posting them to ao3 and then making the pdf version of them like you did previously for your other fics? I would love to bind all of your books and let them have their own section on my book shelf one day.
Also, have you ever thought of publishing novels? The way you write is so eloquent and lovely, something like I have never read or experienced before.

Hi! Thank you so much. This is honestly SO kind, and I know I panicked people when i said I wasn't writing Steddie for myself past March 2024 but I'll still be here, I'll still be writing and absolutely releasing books and sharing new creations with anyone who likes them!
I will have completed ALL currently incomplete works but then. This is one of the reasons why I'm giving myself a specific date, so i can focus and work towards completion.
As with all my fics, they will live forever on AO3 and I will make PDFs for all the main ones, for anyone who wants them, they'll be on my linktree!
I do absolutely plan to publish my own original works! I have a book im releasing soon called 'HIDE' and there are details scattered through my Tumblr about it, and on my Patreon! 🥰💞✨️

Hi! I believe you were the person who wrote asylum? It was a sanders sides au from back when I was in like the 5th grade. It was a huge part of me getting into writing and then poetry and art and somewhat triggered a chain of reactions in my life and I was wondering if there's a way I could read this fanfiction again? It would truly mean the world to me
Hoo boy, that was the first fanfic I ever really wrote. First long fic, first series, when I was thirteen.
So, the first book got rewritten two years ago and I started rewriting the second, but I guess I kind of lost motivation on it. I want to keep rewriting it, but every time I think about that series the cringe nearly kills me. There have been times where I thought about deleting it from my AO3 because there's obviously a lot I did wrong there and that fic is no longer a reflection of my skill or who I am as a person, but I've never been able to. Sentimental value, I guess, like those pictures your mom keeps of you as a baby in the bath that you hate but would never be able to stomach throwing away. But you just can't look at it, y'know?
This ask changed that.
I thought no one liked that fic, no one remembered it, because it was absolutely bad. So why put in the effort to fix it, y'know? Why try to fix a dumpster fire if no one cares that the dumpster is on fire? I had no motivation to improve upon this series, my first series, because I thought it wouldn't matter. But this... you are eager to reread it. You want into my inbox off anon and told me how much you like it, how much you want to reread it... this means the world to me, man. This reignited me wanting to fix it.
Thank you for this. I'm going to keep rewriting it, I'm going to finish it. I wish I could properly express my gratitude to you. The first book, Asylum, is already rewritten (though it probably needs rewritten again,) and part of Survivor is, and eventually it all will be. Thank you.

Do you have any favorite edbella fics that you would recommend?
ohhhh this is embarrassing....... i haven't really read fanfiction since i was in grade 9, and back then i read it for two reasons: i wanted to see the characters from twilight in a more lighthearted setting, and i wanted e/b to smash lol. so my taste for fanfics is kinda stuck in 2011, and i never branched out much
my humble rec would be the one i mentioned in my tags, edward wallbanger, now published as wallbanger by alice clayton. it's a steamy romcom and it's not a literary masterpiece but i've reread it about 5 times and have a blast every time. i absolutely adore this woman's humor. i own a copy of the published version (in spite of the absolutely atrocious cover that doesn't match the vibe AT ALL 😭) but still have a soft spot for the original fanfic as it includes extra scenes from edward's POV that are super fun and endearing. i still got a pdf of the original so if you wanna check it out, hmu
i also really liked this one shot called five nights which is like... no thoughts, head empty, characters are horny and the writing style mirrors meyer's so well (in a good way) that i feel like it could effortlessly fit in the eclipse canon.

hi i just have to thank you for mentioning Not Easily Conquered! i don’t even usually read stucky/marvel but oh my god i cannot stop thinking about that fic even though i finished it four days ago. i think it changed me forever. so i have to know if you know of any similar fics, either stucky specifically or that level of quality in any fandom bc clearly you’ve got great taste lol. ty in advance! <3
oh wow i’m so glad you liked it! it ruined my fucking life when i was a 16 year old stucky stan and even now when i dislike them there’s just something special and insanity inducing contained in that fic. it’s one of the most romantic things i’ve ever read in my life and i will never be over it. and thank you for the compliment >:) the secret to good taste in fic is only read fics that have been thoroughly vetted beforehand
as for other fics…ummm to be honest i don’t really read a lot of fic. i don’t know of any stucky fics that are on the level of nec but i can list off a few well-written ones that i remember being my favorites
no matter how long the day is (i’ll come home to you) by alby_mangroves and talkplaylove: steve is the regular canon captain america struggling to adjust to modern day life. he meets bucky, a civilian bookshop owner, and they bond while bucky helps to ground him in modern life
thirty-eight days and counting by thecommodore_squid: bucky is in witness protection and steve is the agent assigned to protect him. posing as his husband ofc. clintasha is there as a supporting couple
various stucky fics by thebrotherswinchester: these fics were all deleted from ao3 bc the author started publishing real books but you can download the pdfs from that link. i don’t remember the plots of most of them but i know they were well-written. the reason i bring them up is bc this author wrote one of my favorite fics ever which i’ll mention later
where there’s no end or need for goodbyes by buckyjerkbarnes: bucky is a lighthouse keeper and steve washes up on his island after a storm one day. bucky patches him up and they start to get to know each other. i really debated including this one bc it was my white whale when i was in the stucky trenches. it’s a wip that was abandoned halfway through and steve and buckys relationship isn’t even close to being resolved. but the writing is good enough that i think it’s worth the lack of closure and you can just like imagine for yourself what happens next

i’m assuming you know the spn classics but my personal favorites are and this, your living kiss and so says the sword
this could be a city by cherryice: spn, deanbenny. i have to spread the deanbenny agenda or i’ll die. alternate s8 where benny stays in the bunker. examines and begins to dismantle the tenets of monster hunting. found family galore. plate tectonics. my deanbenny scholar bestie swears by the rest of cherryice’s fics too but this is the only one of theirs i’ve personally read
tell me about the big bang by thebrotherswinchester: star wars, finnpoe. post-tfa character study of finn adjusting to. like. being a person instead of a stormtrooper. it was written before tlj so there’s no reference to any of that bullshit. this is the fic i mentioned before. its one of my favorite fics of all time and i reread it yearly. it’s got a few off moments but if you’re not a militant finn stan like me they won’t bother you
i loved you first by thirdactlove: tenet, protagoneil. only read this one if you’ve seen tenet as it won’t really make sense otherwise. follows neil before, during, and after the events of the movie and details his relationship with the protagonist. the sequel follows the protagonist and does the same from his own pov. had me writhing around in my bed at 3am out of misery and lovesickness

I read all my destiel via ebook so download mobi format I’ve recently rereading For Every Alpha an Omega by thepopeisdope however their ao3 has been deleted do you know anywhere I can get their other works even in pdf format? Thanks for this it’s a great idea to keep these fics so that others can enjoy them.when I have time I’m going to download my bookmarks to pdf so I won’t have this problem in the future!!

And yes, definitely back up your bookmarks! Esp cause I won't distribute things I have if the author asks me not to, so having your own back ups is important!

37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?
Let me introduce you to Hold My Hand When This Ends. I fully understand why it never got much attention - nobody knows the characters, the pairing is very niche, the subject is... well, problematic. But why it's dear to my heart... it's one of the rare fics that simply appear out of nowhere and demand to be written, and this almost felt like memories of a past life I simply transformed into a story. The style is also very experimental and different from my usual way of writing.
If you ever decide to read it, I recommend Hel nazazu eskutik by Ken Zazpi as a soundtrack. The title is taken from that song.
40. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?
I tend to reread, I mean... if it's one of my favorite fics, I've probably read it a hundred times already. My history on AO3 is constantly repeating and I have my absolute favs downloaded in PDF out of fear of losing them.

As I said, this story is still unfinished, but there are 124 chapters of wonderful story-telling and worldbuilding, so it’s well worth reading. And it doesn’t stop on a cliffhanger at all, so it’s quite safe to venture in :-) Give this amazing fic a try if you haven’t so far. I promise you’ll love it!

So, explanation on why all of my stories have done the *poof*.
Last night, I received a multitude of comments, mainly on IINHF. OII? but on a few other fics as well that were… pretty bad. I’m not sure why or who or how but for some reason a few or a group of people decided that commenting very negative things on my fics was a good idea. I’m unsure of IINHF was shared somewhere and it upset people or what tbh.
But, being me, panicked when several comments appeared that went along the lines of “this is some of the worst writing I’ve ever read”, “of course an addict would write something like this”, “this makes me sick”, and “you should kill yourself”, among other things. I mean I ✨panicked✨, broke down, couldn’t really keep up with all the comments that were coming in (there were a lot), and decided in the moment that deleting everything was the best idea. 😅
I understand that when a piece of writing gets somewhat “popular”, especially in a fandom, there’s bound to be someone who doesn’t like it. Which is fine, I’ve always had the mindset of “to each their own” and appreciated if someone gave one of my stories a try, even if they didn’t like it in the end. I’m unsure if the topics I wrote on is what made some people so upset or… I’m not sure honestly.
But yeah, the stories aren’t gone forever I’m just… gonna need a little bit to recover from that. I think I’ll eventually repost them, a few chapters at a time. (Gives me a chance to go over everything and fix things I’ve wanted to fixer rewrite/rephrase for a while so I guess that’s one plus with the whole situation. Not a very big one but, bright side right?)
I think I’m definitely going to need a little time to get over my newly created anxiety of posting any writing now though.
Thank you all for your support and I apologize for deleting everything in a panic. I know some people were reading it, rereading it, and whatnot when it was deleted. I have pdf versions of the stories I can send to people if anyone wants them in the meantime. Just let me know.

atog is a classic and im pretty sure that most people can agree that it’s amazing. it’s a superhero au and i don’t even normally care that much for superhero aus but this fic is still one of the best things i’ve ever read. basically kurt is the ghost of new york. blaine is a fanboy who also has some powers of his own. they meet and everything starts to escalate from there (fair warning this fic gets really dark)
Hell & High Water by mmerainbows
full disclosure i haven’t finished this one yet but i read the first half and i remember it being very good and i definitely plan on rereading and finishing this fic. it’s a dystopian au in which the world has been taken over by the others. kurt is just trying to survive but then blaine shows up and things get complicated

what are your favorite H/L fics?
Anon, thank you so much for that question, because it’s my favourite question in the world. Sadly, it is also the most difficult one to answer, because since I’ve joined the fandom in 2015, I have lived and breathed fanfic. I read on the way to the bus, on the bus, in bed, in uni classes (sorry), on holiday, on work breaks, basically every minute I can spare. So I know my 952 bookmarks may look like I use them instead of my Marked for Later list, but I actually don’t. These are the ones that I’ve read and would rec!
Asking for favourite fics always brings the danger that people only rec the classics, so I’m trying to reduce it to a few, but I know and loved almost all of them! So instead of trying to rank my faves, I’m trying to give a bit of an overview of what kind of fics I like and I would love to rec more specific fics, if anyone is interested! Please always ask!
So first, my absolute favourite fic of all time. I have read it at least ten times, no exaggeration. It is, indeed, a classic: Unbelievers by @isthatyoularry
Second of all, my favourite “older fics/classics”, I’ve tried to choose three, so it’s been a struggle: my heart is breathing for this moment in time by usedtothebeach, Who Painted the Moon Black by throughthedark, and Run Like the Devil by benzos
Next up, my favourite trope in the world: long fics about Omega!Harry. I’d like to thank all the authors who’ve written so many amazing fics with this trope recently, because there has been a lack of them for a long time! Face Your Fears and Just for Tonight (I can be yours) by @sadaveniren, Say Something by @kingsofeverything, A Distant Hazy Light by @greenfeelings, Pretty Please (With Sugar On Top) by @angelichl and But Please Don’t Bite by shyserious (this one has been deleted but I can send you the pdf if you message me off anon!)
This one has got to be its own category, because in 2016, the time where I was most active and involved in fandom, I’ve been obsessed with everything by @alivingfire. The one I can reread time and time again is Inconceivable (this woud actually also belong in the comfort fics category), but of course Hiding Place and Say Hallelujah, Say Goodnight are absolute masterpieces and I need to mention them. I can’t really choose favourites here, I love all of them equally!!
Another favourite category of mine is Girl Direction! There have been almost none of them when I first joined the fandom but thankfully that has changed lately! My faves are Harriet and Louise by @newleafover, Daisy Chains and I Must Confess (I Still Believe) by @alienfuckeronmain and Kiss the Girl by @hazzabeeforlou!
I have a few comfort fics, so many in fact, that I once started drafting up a rec post for them specifically, but I’m going to mention 3 again: Loathly by orphan_account, blend into my favourite colour by @rainbowninja and Watch Him As He Goes by LoadedGunn

Hey! I've been your follower since u wrote AT fanfics and because of your work, amongst other beautiful fanfics I've read over time, I've really wanted to try making my own.
I was just wondering what books have u read since u wrote Pray for the Preacher's daughter? Also do u have any book recommendation for newbies in creative writing?

i uh... haven't read as much recently as i might like actually. i find it hard to get invested in new books and my living situation doesn't give me room to be storing books anyway. mostly i just reread a few of the ones i have pdfs of.
for book recs, i find those real hard to give out actually, mostly since people have different tastes you know? what do you like, mate? haha
still, for the simple fact of learning about writing styles i can recommend a few series/authors. this is not an exhaustive list, it's just some books i think have nice writing.
for the simple fact that the show is airing rn and i have it on the brain: if you can find a copy of robert jordan's wheel of time series (and you have the stomach for a monolithic 14 book series that gets real boring and slow in the middle ngl) you should definitely read it. world-building, characterisation, various cultures, all that is really good. his descriptive writing is out of this world and i guarantee you'll learn more new words in the first book than you might think. i know i did. just. really good jumping off point for third-person story-telling.
if you make it through those books and you're like, huh. what else? do yourself a favour and read literally any book by brandon sanderson. he finished the wheel of time books and like... you can't go wrong with any pick of his books. the mistborn trilogy will give you FEELINGS, but if you're after a stand-alone novel, i can not recommend warbreaker or the legion books enough. they're short, they're punchy, and his magic systems are always breathtaking.
kj taylor's fallen moon trilogy is quite good, excellent if you're looking for How To Write Convincing Villains. the author herself is a delight as well if that matters at all lmao. can't speak for the follow up trilogy bc i haven't read it but i'm sure it's just as good. (also she's aussie which always delights me, love a good aussie author)
also do yourself a favour and read the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. douglas adams was a master wordsmith and the books are so much fun. it's one of the few hard copies i have here in england bc i just love it so so much. never fails to make me laugh.
if you're more into crime stuff, i do recommend karen slaughter. i've only read a few of her books (courtesy of my mum who's an avid fan) but the ones i did read were thrilling cover to cover.
i guess my best advice is to read widely? my typical fare is fantasy, i'm such a ho for a good fantasy book, idk if it's obvious in my fic writing but that's where my soul lives, it's what i first started writing (literally my very first original writing was some stupid knock off of the dragonlink series).
go grimdark gothic and pick up brent weeks' way of shadows books (incredible covers is why i picked them up and the story did not disappoint). traumatise yourself and read stephen king (i've read just a few of his but 'the outsider' was so gripping i legit stole it off my mum for two days to binge read it and she got mad at me). read some kristin cashore books (bitterblue is fabulous, just saying) and enjoy your tropey fantasy. i've got 'everything leads to you' by nina lacour and 'the abyss surrounds us' by emily skrutskie and like any of malinda lo's books and OMG 'the memoirs of lady trent' by marie brennan.
and uh. don't forget to keep reading fanfics haha. much of my writing style is grounded very firmly in the third person fantasy from whence i came, but my transition into present tense is fanfiction's fault entirely baby. and you pick up tropes - my foundation stones! - much better in fic because it distils them down nicely i feel. people who've been writing fic a while already have a feel for the tropes that make stories work so you might have to pay a bit more attention when you start out, don't worry about it, that'll come naturally with practice. which you gotta do.
also also, dictionaries and thesauruses are your friends. thesaurus.com is part of my dna now. go there. sign up. word of the day yourself. it's great stuff and even if you don't remember all of them, adding a few new words to your arsenal now and then can't hurt.
just practice. experiment with what you write and how you write it. not everything you type has to be published either. lord knows i don't post any of my personal work anywhere and half my fics never see the light of day either. write for you and have fun.
