here's the moment we've been waiting for- our valentine's day blind date pairings! we had 58 characters submitted, so there's 29 pairings!
please remember that these obviously do not have to end in a whirlwind romance! the dates can end up just being two friends having a free meal, can end in a disaster, can have someone else bailing, or maybe can spark something real! the point of it all is to have fun.
the dinner will be held at Neptune on Friday February 16th in game, but threads can begin as of tomorrow! the dates can also bc hc'd as well, all we ask is that everyone paired please speak with your partners and decide on the outcomes together! we don't want anyone feeling left out or dejected.
again, this has been randomized! (with tweaks to make sure no one is paired with themselves and to avoid large age gaps) so as wild as some of these pairs may be, we hope you all have fun with it!

My media this week (19-25 Nov 2023)
Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 Old Town Road (Singles series) (Chris Molanphy) - Part of Duke University Press' series Singles, chart geek/music historian Chris Molanphy dives deep into "Old Town Road" which he describes as a 'one of one' phenomenon. To quote the book blub, which sums it up nicely: Molanphy shows how “Old Town Road” channeled decades of Americana to point the way toward our cultural future. Fairly short and incredibly readable.
🥰 Ordinary Numbers (BootsnBlossoms, Kryptaria) - 44K, canon-divergent meeting for 00Q
🥰 The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh (Society of Gentlemen #0.5) (KJ Charles, author; , narrator) - short story, kicking off KJC's incredible romance series set in during the Regency and political unrest around the time of the Peterloo massacre
😍 [Podfic] Mr Webster's Wager (fahye, author; HowOldAreWe, narrator) - 29K, very slight canon-divergent expansion of The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh, expanding on Francis & Ash getting together - so well done I almost consider it a part of the series, at least for my own rereads - this is a really great podfic of it!
😍 A Fashionable Indulgence (Society of Gentlemen #1) (KJ Charles, author; Matthew Lloyd Davies, narrator) - exquisite Julian finds purpose and love transforming young radical Harry into a gentleman. Plus there's the Peterloo massacre and personal murder plots
😍 A Seditious Affair (Society of Gentlemen #2) (KJ Charles, author; Matthew Lloyd Davies, narrator) - Tory/Radical romance with some incredible digging in to what it means to be a man of principle ('Wednesday by Wednesday, I have loved you')
💖💖 +75K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Art Nouveau (voluptuous_panic) - MCU: shrunkyclunks, 12K - reread, forever fave - Cap!Steve has a disastrous first date at a hipster cider bar but luckily the hot, tattooed bartender is there to distract him. Short & very, very hot.

Cal’syee’s living an episode of Shameless, Xandra’s living her TNG dreams, Vulcan’s on the set of HBO’s Rome, gloating about historical accuracy while still workshopping a quip about the world’s smallest violin.
First I was just squee about the new Summers baby, because I’m a sucker like that. The Krakoa era is a goldmine for wish list character interactions, everything and the kitchen sink. Soap opera and spectacle. Another stitch in a dangling plot thread, from I think 2013?
Ewing, you mad genius. Im obsessed with this page. Infinite room of parallels. I could write a 30,000 words easy.
“Safe from us, Gabriel.” Guffawed at Deathbird’s self-awareness. And the imagine of Gabriel suing for monthly monitored visitation as a matter of asshole principle and getting exactly what he wanted, cut away gag from an action shot, someone yelling where Scott is, cue panel of him halfway across the galaxy in dad mode.
But then you think about it. Vulcan was never a baby, he got ripped out of his mother by his future BiL and tossed in an age accelerator, it’s why he’s so messed up. All of which he blames his father for. For being too weak. His own kid was born after War of Kings, Cal’syee was imprisoned and experimented on by space evolutionaries, because the kid had “unique genes,” (still need to read that New Mutants run, and Xandra’s debut in Mr and Mrs X). Both happy parents are the Cains to their siblings Abels. Cal’syee was exiled for matricide and sororicide, Gabriel roasted Corsair AND D’ken, Corsair got better, The third parent more or less, symbolically and thematically. “Mr. Summers was my father/I… am Emperor Vulcan.”
Kudos to the X-Books forum for guessing the kid is actually a girl, Gibby’s “my son” versus Cal’syee’s “our child…” I thought Mom was diplomatically pointing out Gabriel’s sudden parental entitlement, but Cal’syee being jaded by a lifetime of Shi’ar Succession Shenanigans is funnier.

Shortwave Radiogram, 20-25 July 2023: Digital modes from supercapacitors infused with espresso
We use Twitter @SWRadiogram extensively to share results of Shortwave Radiogram reception, and to send reminders about transmissions during the weekend. It is a simple and functional platform for that purpose. But, with uncertainties about the future of Twitter, I looked into Threads, the new competitor to Twitter. Establishing an Instagram account is prerequisite to getting on to Threads. I did that, and soon decided that Instagram does not interest me, for receiving or sending. I would just proceed to Threads. However, I learned that Threads does not, yet, have a desktop version. I don't do mobile, except sometimes as an internet radio, and to communicate with my wife. ("Where are you?" "I'm in the cat food aisle.") So I would just wait until Threads can be used on a desktop. A few days after signing up for Instagram, I received a rather stern notice from Instagram informing me that my account has been suspended. This is before I posted anything to Instagram or Threads. They mentioned procedures 1) to find out why the account was suspended and 2) to request a review of the suspension. I am not going to bother with those procedures. Threads will have to go on without me. I will stick with Twitter until it self-destructs, then probably exit social media altogether, and return to a unsociable linear website. Years ago, I had a Facebook account. I used it only to relay news about international broadcasting from my kimandrewelliott.com website (my @kaedotcom Twitter account is now my outlet for international broadcasting news). That Facebook account was also suspended, probably because I used a third-party app to push the website items to my Facebook page. So it seems that I've never met a Meta that will have me as a member. A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 313) (Friday 1300 UTC) is provided by Scott in Ontario. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. H0b0_Radio has this IQ recording of the Saturday 0230 UTC broadcast. An archive of received images is provided by John @highroute in California. Analysis is provided by Roger in Germany, plus his notes on the closing music. Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 314, 20-25 July 2023, in MFSK modes as noted: 1:39  MFSK32: Program preview 2:47  MFSK32: Milestone in energy capacity of supercapacitors 6:39  MFSK64: Espresso might be helpful against Alzheimer's* 11:58  MFSK64: This week's images* 28:41  MFSK32: Closing announcements Please send reception reports to [email protected] And visit http://swradiogram.net Twitter: @SWRadiogram or https://twitter.com/swradiogram (visit during the weekend to see listeners’ results) Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/567099476753304 Shortwave Radiogram Gateway Wiki: https://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Shortwave_Radiogram_Gateway

Gabriel & Scott for @heightenedemotions
Gabriel’s coffee had gone cold, but he wasn’t particularly fussed about fixing it, far more interested in the notebook in front of him. The cafe was quiet at this time, and he’d used the chance to get out of his apartment and work on the case he’d currently taken on. Not that it was an official case, just something he was working on for Ramona.
Hearing footsteps, Gabriel glanced upwards, half expecting it to be one of the barista’s. What he didn’t expect was the other. “Well you’re the last person I expected to be in this town,” He muttered tiredly, shaking his head. “Steve. Been a while.” Not as long as it usually was, however. He usually had more time in-between. “Are you even still going by that? Or do I have to call you something different this time?”

20 MOVIES WHICH FEATURE BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE
PART #2: HOTELS AND NON-RESIDENTIAL (AND A FEW MORE HOUSES)
The purpose of this blog has always been to explore, through cinema, buildings that we may not have the chance to visit in person. With most of us stuck at home right now, that kind of cinematic escape feels more appealing than ever, so here's a bumper list of some more of my all-time favourite structures in movies. (Part #1: HOUSES is Here)
1. QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2009) The tradition of housing Bond villians in sci-fi worthy contemporary architecture was continued with Auer+Weber’s  ESO Hotel at Cerro Paranal.
2. SPECTRE (2015) This Bond features Johann Obermoser’s striking mountaintop ICE Q restaurant, at Austria’s Sölden Ski Resort.
3. GATTACA (1997) Gattaca’s futuristic world is assembled from iconic elements of California’s architectural past. The characters glide down minimalist roadways in electrified Citroens and inhabit monumental Brutalist, Futurist or International Style structures, such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Marin County Civic Center.
4. PLAYTIME (1967) Jaques Tati poked fun at Modern architecture, but depicted it onscreen more beautifully than perhaps any other filmmaker. For his masterwork, he built his own Modernist mini-Paris, with steel and concrete buildings, streets, working traffic lights, and a power plant.
5. CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (2001) Leonardo DiCaprio’s fraudster poses as a Pan Am pilot in two scenes shot within Eero Saarinen’s 1962 TWA Terminal.
6. EX MACHINA (2014) Nathan’s contemporary alpine residence is actually Jensen and Skodvin’s 2013 Juvet Landscape Hotel.
7. A VIEW TO KILL (1985) In this 80′s Bond, Roger Moore shoots unsuccessfully at Grace Jones from around the steelwork of the Eiffel Tower, as he pursues her up it, dodging his own would-be assassins.
8. VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA (2008) Woody Allen features several of Barcelona’s iconic structures, including Gaudí’s Church of La Sagrada Familia, and Casa Milà, and Josep Lluis Sert’s Miro Foundation.
9. THE INTERNATIONAL (2009) As globe-trotting thrillers go, this is unremarkable, but it does feature an extended scene at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum.
10. THE ITALIAN JOB (1969) This film featured the beautiful rooftop test track of the 1923 Fiat Lingotto Factory in Turin, by Matté Trucco (pictured above).
11. INCEPTION (2010) The snow fortress was allegedly based on the iconic 1970 UCSD Geisel Library, by William Pereira & Associates + Gin Wong.
12. BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (2016) Despite the  extreme similarity to both Mies Van Der Rohe’s Farnsworth House and Philip Johnson’s Glass House, Bruce Wayne’s Modernist-inspired residence was purpose-built for the film.
13. GOLDFINGER (1964) One of Bond’s most stylish outings, complete with a Ken Adam-designed villian’s lair.
14. PINEAPPLE EXPRESS (2008) Ted the Homicidal Drug Boss (Gary Cole) lives in R M Schindler’s 1941 Rodriguez House.
15. EQUINOX FLOWER (1958) Yashujiro Ozu was a master of the use of domestic space in cinema, and his meticulous and contemplative films are a beautiful catalogue of traditional Japanese architecture.
16. INTERIORS (1978) There may be nothing uplifting in the bleak, subdued tale of a waspish interior designer and her slowly imploding family, but the sparse perfectionism of the world she has constructed, especially that of her Southhampton beach house, is alluring.
17. HIGH RISE (2016) Tom Hiddleston moves into a luxury 70′s Brutalist apartment tower, and faces some grim and gory consequences, in this adaptation of J G Ballard’s dystopian novel.
18. THE PHANTOM THREAD (2018) The clean, meticulous, interiors of this film, especially those of the minimalist Georgian townhouse -the curves of the staircases, the William Morris wallpaper - are as absorbing as the characters.
19. NOCTURNAL ANIMALS (2016) Director and ex-architecture student Tom Ford set much of this film at Scott Mitchell Studio’s contemporary Kurt Rappaport House.
20. FRENCH POSTCARDS (1979) Corbusier’s best-known building, Villa Savoye, can be seen in this film, where it plays the home of one of the characters.  (Photo: Fiat Lingotto Factory (The Italian Job)  by Gabriele Basilico via area-arch.it)

Since the fund's establishment in March, over 14,000 clients have been served, with many more still needing help.
Show co-creator Peter Rotter says: "When the pandemic tragically hit our world and began to shut down our film music community, I felt that something needed to be done to help those who were in need of support and care. Through MusiCares® we have found the charitable vehicle that can come alongside our hurting musical family.
"Music has always played a role in history; reflecting both the subtle and monumental moments of our lives through its unique DNA. Music connects each of us, acting as a common thread of unification, opening the hearts of all people.
"Regardless of the color of one's skin, status or station in life, music powerfully breaks through boundaries as its message permeates deep within us; healing our human frailties and condition at our cores. Music is transformative and personal. It powerfully underscores our lives."
"Music has always helped transport, uplift and inspire us through wars, economic hardships, health crises and societal upheavals," says show co-creator, Richard Kraft. "When COVID-19 hit, it threatened the lives and livelihood of much of our Film & TV Music community. So, we decided to create an online special that both celebrates the soundtrack of our lives and benefits, via MusiCares®, the artists who create it."

ON ART - 12/14
Since viewing and discussing the materials assigned this past week, I’ve been thinking about different artistic processes and qualities of art, two threads that have positioned me to ponder one of the artist’s ultimate questions: what makes art art? Gabriel Orozco spoke in his video about beginning work without knowing what it will become; he also discussed his interest in not mastering mediums, but rather treating each medium as a different hobby. This almost casual process has clear connections to artists like Andy Goldsworthy, who also works without knowing exactly what will come of his art, understanding that it could fall apart or be destroyed at any moment. Both of these artists work with a great degree of openness, something I’ve noticed in many of the artists we’ve studied this semester. From performance artists like Dread Scott and Shaun Leonardo, whose art is inherently dynamic and changing as its observed, to political artists like Rebecca Belmore and Kent Monkman, whose static work reflects an expansive mindset, all kinds of artists in all kinds of mediums with all kinds of inspiration are characterized by a quality of openness. With these considerations in mind, it seems like openness — itself a term that is loose and open-ended, a definition influenced by its context — is among the traits central to art, artists, and art-making.

fresh off a plane from new york, usa it’s jupiter beck. he’s a junior majoring in literature at collège alpin. you might know him from his parents, they’re the writers of a best-seller children story book collection, the adventures of molly brown. the 21 year old scorpio bears a strange resemblance to timothee chalamet. around collège alpin they’re known as the raconteur. it helps that they’re very mesmerizing and intelligent, but they’ve been known to be proud and conceited. you’ll recognize them in the halls by the smell of tobacco, ink stains and stylish coats. listen out for all these things that i’ve done by the killers playing in their room. [ clementine, 20, gmt -6 ] * book club.
hello again!! this is clementine, bringing my second kid. again i’m just gonna leave some important things in the bullet points so feel free to like this and soon enough you’ll have me in your messages ready to plot something fun :) i really really love this muse and i hope you’ll too, i think he can be really interesting to plot with <3
jupiter, strange name as that one is, is the only son of the beck family.
his dad is from hartford, conneticut where he lived a humble life until his parents discovered he was a really talented writer. around the age of eighteen they bought him a ticket to new york and paid his rent for a few months. he tried his luck selling $2 dollar short-stories nearby the metro station. then, one day he met the woman who would become his future wife, who happened to buy a story from him. they fell in love instantly. she came from a family of lawyers who wanted her to study something “more financially secure” than anything that had to do with the arts but she ran away with this man and together they started writing a storybook collection, following the adventures of a little 8-year-old english girl named molly brown. these stories became really popular and they built an empire. now, they have expanded to merchandise, comics and it is even rumored they have an upcoming molly brown movie.
after finishing high school in NYC, jupiter’s parents motivated him to study abroad so that he could get to know some other cultures and experience different ways of living. his dad tells him that a good writer is someone who has been through a lot.
ever since he was little he was really interested in all things related to culture. his mother would tell him peculiar bed-time stories such as greek and roman mythology ones. (he was actually named jupiter after the roman god, who was previously known as zeus for the greeks).
thanks to this and to the mere fact that his parents are both writers and readers, he has always had different interests than his classmates.
he is bisexual and you’ll find that he is really flirty with a lot of people so.... bear w him.
in the list of his favorite writers you’ll find: haruki murakami, f. scott fitzgerald, gabriel garcía marquez and milan kundera.
as you can see he enjoys the narrative/novel part of the literature more than anything, that’s why i labeled him as a raconteur. he writes stories and has written a few short novels too.
he is not really close to his parents because they have pushed him away. he feels like he’s an intruder to their relationship and that they would be better off without him. so, with that and the fact that he’s an only child in mind, he is very used to being lonely.
in spite of this last point, he is really talkative and likes to meet a lot of people. he’s a total extrovert so being social is not the problem. i would say the problem is to find someone who really grabs his attention.
when he finds someone who does tho, he can be a little obsessive. he is stubborn as hell so if he likes someone he’ll do whatever he can to be with that person at least once.
he is really stylish and loves to look good. he is a fashionista tbh.
he tw: drinks a lot and he tw: uses drugs sometimes so in case that pops out in a thread i’ll make sure to put it under the read more section.
