365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #153: Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (2019) - dir. Quentin Tarantino
(Warning: a little spoiler-ish toward the end.)
I try my best to be an objective viewer of cinema, but in all honesty I anticipated the possibility that I might hate Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood with a burning passion. With the exception of Four Rooms and Grindhouse, I’ve seen every feature film directed by Quentin Tarantino, so I am well acquainted with his strengths and weaknesses; based on the Cannes reviews that I skimmed in springtime, I was uncertain as to whether Tarantino’s latest flick would be a Pulp Fiction triumph or a Hateful Eight disaster, but critical reaction seemed to lean more toward the latter. Imagine my surprise, then, when a friend and I sat in a nearly full screening at BAM last month - an unusually late one for me, 8:30 PM until at least 11:15 - and I found that I liked Hollywood more than not (more detail on the “not” in a moment).
Tarantino uses his new film to dig into the mythology surrounding Charles Manson, his “Family” of followers and the crimes they committed on August 8, 1969, murdering actress Sharon Tate, hairstylist Jay Sebring, coffee fortune heiress Abigail Folger and writer Wojciech Frykowski. Although Tate is a key part of Tarantino’s story, portrayed sweetly by Margot Robbie, the bulk of the narrative belongs to two fictional characters, washed-up actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). As Rick pogoes between jobs as villains of the week on network TV and villains in Spaghetti Westerns shot in Italy, Cliff divides his time between chauffeuring Rick around town and doing odd jobs for his boss/best friend. In between tasks, Cliff often spots an attractive young woman called Pussycat (Margaret Qualley) on LA’s wide boulevards, stretching her thumb out for rides to a place called the Spahn Movie Ranch. Unbeknownst to Cliff until he picks Pussycat up for a drive, the ranch has been overtaken by the Manson Family and George Spahn (Bruce Dern) is mistreated by the lot of them, most of all by “Squeaky” Fromme (Dakota Fanning in an exceptionally creepy performance). Cliff doesn’t know it yet, but he and Rick are on a collision course fated to intersect with the plans that the gang has for Rick’s next door neighbor, Sharon Tate.
Perhaps it sounds as though Cliff Booth is the most important of the three protagonists, but for sheer entertainment value, Rick Dalton has no peers. He may be a hack in the universe of OUATIH, yet in the real world the role is one of the finest of Leonardo DiCaprio’s three-decade-long career. Tarantino knows how to get performances out of Leo that provoke him to grow as an actor; his work in this film and Django Unchained are much more impressive to me than the nonsense that went on in one of Martin Scorsese’s worst messes, The Wolf of Wall Street. The loudly comedic sides of Rick’s day-to-day routines are enjoyable, but the scene that snuck up on me in OUATIH is the one in which precocious child actress Trudi (Julia Butters) tells Rick how much she respects the choices he made in a scene they had just shot for a TV Western, resulting in tears rolling down Rick’s face after Trudi walks away. It’s one of the best things I’ve seen at the movies this year.
I can’t fault Tarantino for his reliance on star power. Everywhere you look in OUATIH, there’s a recognizable face: besides the aforementioned actors, the cast also includes Emile Hirsch (who I will never forgive for choking and nearly strangling a female film executive in 2015), Timothy Olyphant, Austin Butler (he’s excellent as the disturbed Tex Watson), Mike Moh, Luke Perry (RIP), Damian Lewis, Al Pacino (hamming it up so much as a Jewish agent that it’s basically a stereotype), Samantha Robinson, Lena Dunham, Mikey Madison (I kept asking myself “who is that????” until I checked the cast afterward and realized she’s one of the daughters on “Better Things”), Maya Hawke, a very pregnant Danielle Harris, Scoot McNairy, Clifton Collins Jr., Clu Gulager, Rebecca Gayheart, Kurt Russell, Zoë Bell, Michael Madsen and Brenda Vaccaro, just to name a few. There are plenty of reasons to be interested in such a huge assemblage of talent.
I’ll also admit that there were three scenes that I considered genuinely moving. The incorporation of José Feliciano‘s cover of “California Dreamin’“ and a strings-heavy version of the Rolling Stones song “Out of Time” were highlights of the movie, while the moment when the film’s title slowly appeared onscreen in the final scene actually caused me to cry. It is apparent that Tarantino wanted to construct a tribute to Sharon Tate and her friends, the victims of a hateful group of monsters. I struggle, though, with piecing together the points Tarantino was trying to make besides the obvious one that those innocent people should not have died. What do we gain from the barely-there presence of Tate’s husband, Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha), in the narrative? Is his jerky air supposed to indicate the behavior that would lead to the sexual assault he committed in 1977? And what about the heinous amounts of violence that are perpetrated against women in the third act? Is Tarantino’s vision of retribution one in which it’s OK to hurt “bad” women because he sees it as justified? Is Brad Pitt seriously going to earn a Best Supporting Actor nomination for bludgeoning a female member of the Manson Family - a woman whose beliefs may have stemmed from being brainwashed by the cult leader and his disciples - to a bloody pulp?
Despite the glaring flaws that support my misgivings, I still say that Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood is one of the better-crafted films that Tarantino has made in recent years. It has problems for sure, but at least Tarantino’s thesis statement wasn’t “hey, isn’t being nostalgic for the way things used to be in 1960s Hollywood (and, to a larger degree, America) so great?” The film shows the sunny optimism of Sharon Tate, starlet and mother-to-be, but it also depicts the ugliness and sadness of the Dream Factory, where hopes fade and end up in reruns on Saturday night. Of course Tarantino wanted to rewrite the script... who wouldn’t?

The 62nd Annual Grammy Awards took place this year under the shadow of major tumult at the Recording Academy. They also began just hours after news broke that NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his . daughter Gianna and seven others died in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles.
Despite the somber mood, the stars showed up for a night of performances, Grammy Moments and of course the distribution of the awards themselves. Among the many winners who received awards before the evening ceremony began were Lizzo, Rosalía, Willie Nelson and Tanya Tucker. Alicia Keys was set to reprise her role as sunny host, with performances on the docket from Ariana Grande, Rosalía, Demi Lovato and many more.
Going into the evening, Lizzo led with the most nominations (eight), while Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish followed with six apiece. All three of those artists contended for Best New Artist (though their respective newness varies), alongside five other artists, in the first year of an expanded category.

Below, see the winners of the 2020 Grammy Awards, updating live throughout the evening.

New top story from Time: See All the Winners of the 2020 Grammy Awards
Below, see the winners of the 2020 Grammy Awards, updating live throughout the evening.

All wrist watches manufactured in Switzerland have been widely known for their inventive originality, superior high quality and great expertise all around the world.
Individuals have been delighted with its launch of epoch-making wrist watches for a lot of centuries. For instance, it designed an unique look ahead to Russian imperial officer named Tsar Watch in 1904. It launched the primary distinctive automated wrist Watch exhibiting world time named Navigator in 1953, the world's first plastic watch IDEA 2001 in 1971, the world's first watch made from stone called Rock Watch in 1985, the first watch product of wooden named Wood Watch in 1988, the world's first contact sensitive watch T-Touch in 2002 and the world's first touch inductive watch which could concurrently show the world time of 150 countries named Navigator 3000 in 2005. The fixed innovation will be seen from these distinctive watches it had produced and we will merely know the explanation why Tissot watches popularize throughout the world.
Holding monitor of time has all the time been a preoccupation of man. Sundials, hourglasses, clock towers, grandfather clocks, alarm clocks - all instruments in man's age-old quest to regulate time. Ever since the wrist watch was invented within the late nineteenth century, numerous variations have appeared: watches tailored for the military, for underwater actions, for the peculiarities of outer house, for the blind and many others. Of probably the most fascinating ones, we convey to your attention the wood watch.
Inspired from the earlier pocket models, the wooden watch very well serves those with sensitive skin, as it is hypoallergenic. In fact, the phrase "wooden watch" doesn't at all times check with a wristwatch made entirely of wood. There are these where even the stainless-steel back of the center piece is covered with a wood flap, however there additionally those with only the strap manufactured from wooden and some mix wood with copper ornamentation for a extra 'vintage' look.
From the standpoint of vogue, wood watches are quite satisfying, as they're every hand made, the particularities of wood not allowing for line manufacturing. Maybe unexpectedly, there are quite quite a few colors obtainable, starting from dark ebony to mild maple. In this way, each design is exclusive - furthermore, as soon as one starts carrying it, the skin's pure oils steadily blend in the wooden, making it fairly the personal item. Additionally, wooden texture and coloration modifications in time, becoming enriched and glamorous with age.
The benefits of sporting a wooden watch day-after-day include perceptible comfort because of its considerable lightness. Additionally, since wood is not topic to thermal variations in the identical means that metallic is, such a watch is kind of sturdy. For folks attuned with nature, a wooden watch helps maintain and strengthen that connection, giving one a sense of being nearer to the everlasting power of mother earth.
As for the Eco-pleasant part, there are certainly some producers who pay elevated consideration to this side - the raw material comes from a sustainable forest where another tree is planted for every one used, the movement is computerized and doesn't require the usage of batteries, and even delivery is completed by sea rather than air - all leading to a a lot reduced carbon footprint.

The Rock watch constituted of Alpine granite was launched in 1985, the Pearl watch turned accessible in 1987, and the Wood watch captured the hearts of many watch lovers when it was officially launched in 1988. With their focus solely on designing watches that will positively interest patrons, it's not stunning to see how the corporate is on top of the game.
With Tissot watches having this type of popularity, many corporations, in addition to people, are taken with buying them. Do you have one? Why not sell your watch? In case you had been able to get it in an public sale for a low worth and somebody needs to get it from you for a better worth, why maintain again? Sell your watch, earn cash, and get your self a brand new Tissot. For safe transactions, look for adverts saying "we buy Tissot watches". Chances are they know the true value of the watch and you're going to get the most out of your Tissot.

Here’s 12 reasons why you should probably #DeleteUber
CEO of the online transportation network company Uber, Travis Kalanick, talks at the internet conference NOAH in Berlin, 8 June 2016
Image: BRITTA PEDERSEN/PICTURE-ALLIANCE/DPA/AP IMAGE
Uber’s a game-changer for millions of people, providing full-time income (or at least some extra cash) for drivers worldwide, and a (generally) safe, quickly-accessed ride between two points for passengers.
But the ride-share startup doesn’t do itself any favors when it comes to its own public image. Racism, sexism, and all stripes of gross behavior are a quick Google search away (or a conversation with anyone in Silicon Valley) when the topic of Uber comes up.
Over the past weekend, former Uber engineer Sarah Fowler became the company’s loudest whistleblower yet, by exposing the sexism she faced at the startup, bringing more scrutiny to a problem that’s now fully-metastasized inside Uber HQ. But you know what they say: The past doesn’t repeat itselfit rhymes. And this ain’t Uber’s first rodeo with PR trouble of their own making.
Here are 12 of the most damning examples of Uber-bad behavior that came before Fowler:
1. Uber defends driver accused of assault, and blames the media (Sept. 2013)
Washington D.C. resident Bridget Todd took to Twitter, and accused her Uber driver of choking her. No charges were made by either party, but Valleywag published the tweets before Todd made her account private.
Uber responded to the criticism, not with an apology, but rather, with a statement from the driver sent to Business Insider.
Again, without an apology, CEO and Cofounder Travis Kalanick sent an email to Uber’s press team, where he accused the medianot his contractorsof bad behavior. As Valleywag wrote,
In the email, Kalanick blamed the media for thinking that Uber is “somehow liable for these incidentsthat aren’t even real in the first place.” Kalanick also stressed that Uber needs to “make sure these writers don’t come away thinking we are responsible even when these things do go bad.”
2. ‘Boob-er’ (Feb. 2014)
A lot of incredible (read: disgusting) examples of Kalanick’s attitude toward women emerged from a February 2014 profile in GQ. One of the more notorious lines was Kalanick’s causal use of the phrase “Boob-er.”
Yes: “Boob-er.” As in, “women on demand.”
Observe (emphasis ours):
Not to make assumptions, but Kalanick probably wasn’t the first kid in his class to lose his virginity. But the way he talks nowwhich is largehe’s surely making up for lost time. When I tease him about his skyrocketing desirability, he deflects with a wisecrack about women on demand: Yeah, we call that Boob-er.
3. Kalanick blames the media, again (Feb. 2014)
In that same GQ profile of Kalanick, they gave him the opportunity to apologize for his handling of Todd’s case. And of course, he did…not:
When asked about it now, he repeats flatly that the incident just didn’t happen and passes on the chance to walk back his remarks.
4. Uber CEO would rather be partying than lobbying (Feb. 2014)
Let’s say you’re an investor in Uber. Or even, maybe, a driver who depends on it for a living. At the time of the GQ profile, Uber was illegal in Miami, and so, Kalanick made trips to meet with city officials.
And unfortunately for Kalanick, that meant…less time in the club, getting lit:
Without getting too far into the weeds, it’s currently against the law for a black car to be dispatched in under an hour. This surely protects limo drivers, who’ve invested in medallions. But it’s also crazy. Says Kalanick: I’m spending a lot of time with city officials in Miami when I would much rather be at the Shore Club. Or the SLS.
5. #winning = money (Feb. 2014)
Last one, from the GQ profilewhich was obviously chock full of gemsinsight into the mind of Kalanick, where “winning” or (groan) “hashtag winning” means lowering costs. Which isn’t a bad thing! Sounding like an insufferable ass, however, is:
Well-being of employees and the customers? Tbd.
“If you can get a Prius for cheaper than a taxi, you just changed 100,000 people’s lives in a city. If you can get it reliably? Holy shit. Kalanick pauses to sum up the experience, then says unabashedly: That’s hashtag winning.
6. Sexy girl ad campaign in France (Oct. 2014)
Then there was that time Uber had a promotion in Lyon, France that was in partnership with an app called “Avions de chasse,” a French colloquialism for sexy girls,” according to BuzzFeed.
The app itself sends photos of attractive women to users. For Uber, they were offering its users an opportunity to be driven by “sexy girls” for up to 20 minutes.
Shortly following the report from BuzzFeed, Uberremoved the ad campaign from its website. No apology.
7. ‘God View’ (Oct. 2014 – onward)
The idea of Uber having an internal tool used to stalk users first surfaced via Kashmir Hill of Forbes in Oct. 2014.
The GPS party trick would be an illegal sharing of location information, with Uber breaching its contract with users like Sims. Uber still regularly trots out “God View” at launch parties, but a source familiar with the matter said ‘Creepy Stalker View’ is not a regular offering.
It continued to be brought up as Uber’s Senior VP of Business Emil Michael (see below) brought up the idea of digging up dirt on journalists the next month.
In November, BuzzFeed news reporter Johana Bhuiyanclaimed she’d been tracked going to a meeting with General Manager of Uber New York Josh Mohrer in an Uber. As Bhuiyan wrote, Mohrer allegedly said, “I was tracking you,” and pointed to his phone.
Uber paid a $20,000 fine after an investigation from New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
8. The not-at-all-secret-plan to dig up dirt on journalists (Nov. 2014)
Uber, one of the most valuable startups in the world, has a lot of cash on hand. Back in November 2014, Emil Michael, senior vice president of business, suggested the company should invest their money in discrediting the media.
Michael, over a dinner in New York where BuzzFeed Editor-In-Chief Ben Smith was in attendance, specifically named Sarah Lacy, editor of the Silicon Valley website PandoDaily, who had recently accused Uber of sexism and misogyny.
“Over dinner, [Michael] outlined the notion of spending ‘a million dollars’ to hire four top opposition researchers and four journalists. That team could, he said, help Uber fight back against the press they’d look into ‘your personal lives, your families,’ and give the media a taste of its own medicine,” Smith wrote on BuzzFeed.
Michael apologized for his actions in a statement to BuzzFeed at the time but has seemingly not been reprimanded any further. An opportunity to take a stand for respect once again lost.
9. Jokes about hiring a racist blogger (Jan. 2015)
Kalanick is active on Twitterlike so many people on Twitter, perhaps to a fault. On Jan. 1, 2015, Charles C. Johnson tweeted:
To which Kalanick replied,
What that means is Kalanick, jokingly or not, just endorsed a man who, as Pando noted, threatened to publicly name the alleged victim in Rolling Stone‘sUniversity of Virginia rape story and referred to the case of Eric Garner as a “fake chokehold story.”
The exchange has since been deleted. The internet never forgets.
10. Lawsuit of employees stalking exes and Beyonc (Dec. 2016)
Ward Spangenberg, a former forensic investigator for Uber, sued the company for wrongful termination, age discrimination and defamation, according to court documents first reported by the Center for Investigative Reporting.
The lawsuit also brought back “God View,” alleging that sensitive information collected by Uber was widely available to employees, who then used it to “track high profile politicians, celebrities and even personal acquaintances of Uber employees, including ex-boyfriends/girlfriends, and ex-spouses.”
An Uber spokesperson said that Spangenberg’s claims are “absolutely untrue.” The company, the spokesperson said, built a system of administrative controls that limits who can see user data.
11. #DeleteUber (Jan. 2017)
A movement with the hashtag #DeleteUber began earlier this year in connection with two main issues both of which involved the company’s connection to President Donald Trump.
First, Kalanick agreed to be a part of Trump’s business advisory council.
Second, Uber turned off surge pricing shortly after a taxi strike in opposition of Trump’s travel ban.
More than 200,000 people deleted their Uber accounts, according to the New York Times. It caused so much of a stir that Uber admitted to having to build a better system to improve the process. Before, deleting your Uber account was not automated.
Kalanick later stepped down from the council. He also agreed, as of last week, to meet with diversity advocate Rev. Jesse Jackson to discuss initiatives. Given Fowler’s remarks and all the examples above, they’ll clearly have a lot to talk about.
12. Kalanick hasn’t tried
At the top, Kalanick is seemingly reactionary rather than proactive in all of these situations. The worst part about it all: a guest post in Fortune by Chris Sacca, an investor in Uber and friend of Kalanick, shows that if Kalanick wanted to change, he could.
But that day in Truckee, I was reminded of how tireless and obsessive Travis can be when it comes to achieving goals he sets out for himself.
He doesnt sleep. He doesnt lose focus. He will even forget to eat. He executes again and again, inspiring those around him to have the same passion for the end game as he does. So, if Travis decides he wants to provide a cleaner, safer, easier experience than the current taxi system, he will make that work.

8 Viking Myths Busted
By: Emma Mason
Bearded, violent beyond reason and singularly successful at suppressing everyone around them. This, says Janina Ramirez, is the popular – yet questionable – image of Vikings. But how violent were they really, and did they actually wear horned helmets? These are myths that need to be unpicked…
An image of Viking sailors making the voyage across the Atlantic between Europe and America. One sailor is seen wearing a horned helmet. In reality, says Janina Ramirez, Viking helmets would have been simple skullcaps. Painting by NC Wyeth, c1350. (Image by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
The Viking Age stretched from the ninth to the 11th century. During this time Viking culture had a huge impact on great swathes of Europe, Asia, Africa and even America – many centuries before Columbus sailed the oceans. They could navigate the known world and commanded respect wherever they went. Yet the Vikings are surrounded by myths. Here are eight of them busted…
Myth 1: They wore horned helmets
Let’s get this out of the way straight off. There is no evidence that the Vikings wore horned helmets, and nothing like this has ever been discovered in any archaeological dig. They certainly wore helmets but they would have been simple skullcaps, designed to protect the head from impact. Having a pair of horns on your head in battle would not have been helpful if warriors were striking at you with clubs, swords or axes.
The helmet plaques from Sutton Hoo and Vendel suggest that god-like warriors donned helmets with protruding ‘horns’ (although these are actually hook-beaked birds), but the Viking raiders and traders did not.
The modern idea of Vikings in horned helmets originated in the 19th century, but it was Richard Wagner’s The Ring Cycle [a cycle of four operas by the German composer based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas] that seared it into the modern imagination. Costume designer Carl Emil Doepler (1824–1905) created horned helmets in the 1870s for the Viking characters, and so the myth was born. Numerous cartoonists, filmmakers and artists have continued this fantasy right up to the present day.

Myth 2: They were a defined group
‘The Vikings’The term ‘Viking’ comes from Old Icelandic ‘Viking-r, a creek-dweller’. The Viken was the primary mercantile region of Norway, so it is possible that this apparently homogenous group of people got their name from the extensive trading they undertook out of their busy ports. The word ‘Viking’ later becomes synonymous with ‘naval raids/naval expeditions’ and begins to function more as a verb. Individuals or groups would go ‘a-Viking’, which would mean they would leave their native lands during the warmer summer months, travelling in longboats to regions where they could trade and raid.
Contemporary writers don’t use the term ‘Viking’ to speak of a group of people. Instead they referred to Norse Men, people from the North, or simply pagans (remember, those recording events were usually Christian scribes). What’s more misleading still is that ‘Viking’ has been used to denote the entire Scandinavian region, including Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Each of these regions was governed by different leaders and they would have seen themselves as distinct from one another.
These were also very varied landscapes. The more northern regions, particularly the mountainous areas of Norway, were difficult to farm because of hostile weather, while southern parts, in the plains of Denmark, were more fertile. There were occasions when Scandinavian rulers combined their forces for greater military might, but the term ‘Viking’ is like describing all ‘Northern Europeans’ as the same.
Myth 3: They were extremely violent
The Vikings earned a place in history due to their protracted raids on often vulnerable monastic sites. Populated by literate scribes, these were the worst places to attack if you wanted a good record in Christian historical documents. Alcuin of York wrote to Bishop Higbald, declaring: “Never before has such terror appeared in Britain as we have now suffered from a pagan race. . . .The heathens poured out the blood of saints around the altar, and trampled on the bodies of saints in the temple of God, like dung in the streets.”
There is certainly evidence of the violent means Vikings used to suppress people, particularly in Britain. Many skeletons have been found with the instruments of their death still wedged in their bones. A skeleton in the North Hertfordshire Museum has a Viking spear head stuck in its neck. However, while some Vikings clearly deserved their reputation as ‘wolves of war’, others lived peaceful existences – farming, trading and integrating across the four continents that they settled.
What’s more, these were violent times, and the Vikings’ aggression was matched or exceeded by other groups during this period. One of the most famous names of the early medieval period, Emperor Charlemagne, carried out a form of genocide on people in Saxony. In the ‘Massacre of Verden’ in AD 782 his army murdered more than 4,500 Saxons who had been given to him by an ally. This was violence at its most stark. And yet, because Charlemagne had a Christian biographer writing a favorable account of his life, was killing pagans and was seen as ‘father of the church’, his place in history was secure.

Myth 4: They took what they wanted and sailed away
Finds from Scandinavia do indicate that many Vikings pillaged the places they reached, bringing back coins from across the known world to be buried in hoards back in their homelands. However, many chose to remain in the lands they encountered, establishing lasting and important settlements.
One of the earliest and most extensive Viking settlements was Dublin, established by AD 841. Dublin grew into an industrially strong city with a thriving port and a mint where the first Irish coins were made. It wasn’t just Dublin that changed and developed under the Vikings. In York, the Anglo-Saxon city was relocated further towards the mouth of the river and settled by Vikings as a new and vibrant town – Jorvik. Iceland owes its settlement almost entirely to Vikings, under Ingólfr Arnanson in AD 874.
Normandy is another example of how Viking settlement could grow from violence into peaceful settlement. The Normans got their name from being ‘north-men’, yet they were given land in the north of France by king Charles III (aka Charles the Simple, 879–929) in an attempt to keep further Viking attacks at bay. Charles even gave his daughter to the Norwegian chieftain Rollo [who gained Normandy from Charles the Simple] in marriage, and the Viking settlers soon embraced French language and culture to develop into a new breed of conquerors.

Myth 5: They were godless pagans
They say history is written by the victors, but in the case of the Vikings, history is written by Christians. This meant that while few accounts of Viking religion survive, there are many documents written by Christian scribes that describe them as pagan and godless. This is not supported by the information we can glean from archaeology and later Scandinavian texts.
Viking religion was structured, hierarchical and based on a number of established narratives. It was not a religion of the book, and the mythology was transmitted orally.
The Vikings didn’t practise their religion in temples but rather, like the ancient Celts, held places like groves and rivers sacred. It seems that priests were involved in religious ceremonies, and these were drawn from the heads of families. Priestly office was one of the honours bestowed on kings. The priest would perform sacrifices, either of objects, animals or people.
Viking cosmology differentiated between life on Earth – Midgard – and other spiritual realms. The gods were thought to inhabit Asgard, while the sacred tree Ysgadrill stretched its roots to the lands of the gods, giants and the dead. There were at least six realms, with a special place reserved for warriors – Valhalla.
Myth 6: They were ignorant and illiterate barbarians
The Vikings were not the ignorant and illiterate barbarians that Christian writers of the time believed them to be. While they didn’t write long texts like the Sagas until later in the Viking Age, they had developed a complex script – runes – that was loaded with symbolism. Each letter in the runic alphabet was also connected with a word; the ‘f’ rune was called ‘feoh’, which meant ‘wealth’ or ‘cattle’ – this makes sense within a barter society, as cattle hides were a way of measuring wealth.
Runes could carry spiritual meaning too, and texts record how certain runes were connected with specific gods or goddesses. Rune stones included lengthy dedications and personal names. Smaller inscriptions survive on personal items like combs and weapons.
Far from illiterate barbarians, the Vikings were some of the greatest naval engineers and travellers the world had seen. Prehistoric carvings and stone ships testify to the importance of boats within prehistoric Scandinavian society and religion. By the ninth century they had developed advanced ships that could traverse the hostile Northern Atlantic Ocean. They travelled further than any single race before the modern age, and took huge risks whenever they set out on a voyage.

Myth 7: They treated their women badly
Viking society was mainly governed by ‘jarls’, the most important of whom could become kings. It was a largely military society, in which strength at arms was prized, yet wise and learned men and women could also wield power.
Women played an important role in Viking society. They were guardians of the keys to both property and wealth, particularly when their menfolk were abroad. There is evidence that some were trained to be military leaders too, with shield-maidens described throughout the mythology. Women were held in high esteem, with two buried within the famous Oseberg ship.
One of the most venerated characters in the Germanic pantheon was Freyja, goddess of sex, beauty, gold and death. She rides a chariot pulled by two cats and is accompanied by the boar Hildisvini.
Women did seem to have spiritual roles within Viking society, with wands discovered in many female graves. Furthermore, they had significantly better legal rights than their Christian counterparts and could divorce their husbands if they were violent or disrespectful towards them.
Myth 8: They were beardy and unkempt
Far from unkempt barbarians, Viking men and women were quite vain. Many finds like tweezers, combs and razors have been discovered, and it seems they went to great pains over their appearance.
They didn’t live in dark, dirty huts, but often in large and luxurious halls, like the magnificent ‘Heorot’ recorded in the epic poem Beowulf, which was the setting for lavish feasts, gifts of gold and display of skills at arms.

The Vikings also had a good diet, which included a lot of fish – unsurprising given that most settlements were near to the coast. Evidence of Viking latrines shows they feasted on elk, bear, puffin, salmon and trout.
