Danyal Al Ghul: Incorrect Quotes and Miscellaneous Thoughts
Incorrect quotes-style snippets specifically for my danyal al ghul au here (which i really need to come up with a unique au name for atp). Because I thought it'd be funny. And also some miscellaneous headcanons thrown into the mix. Some context for the au: - Danyal is 5 years older than Damian (so 10 and 15) - Danny faked his death when he was 10. Talia knows and helped him with it. - Jazz, Sam, and Tucker do not know he's an ex-assassin.
-------- Snippet 1
Danny, dryly tapping his temple: I have, as the Americans say, irreparable psychological damage, right here.
Jazz, an older sibling first and foremost: well, it's good that you're self-aware.
-------- Snippet 2
Danny, aged 10, in the American foster planning to just age out of the system: *emanating Bad Vibes. Pure, Little Orphan Tom Riddle Energy*
Jazz, aged 12, coming in to adopt a new sibling with her parents: Him. This is my brother now :)
Danny: ...what
--------
Lilo and Stitch is Danny's favorite Disney movie. He watched it when he was 11 with Jazz when she was attempting to connect with him, and by this point Danny was becoming receptive to her efforts. They had a movie marathon in the living room one night.
Safe to say? It resonated with his little 11 year old heart strongly, and he related very strongly with both Nani and Stitch. He got unexpectedly emotional and hid in his room for the rest of the night. Jazz felt really bad, but it had the intended (but kinda unexpected) effect of him trying to be nicer to her afterwards.
-------- Snippet 3
Dash, aged 12, causing trouble again and getting intercepted by Danny: *scaling up a desk* AHHHHH! GET YOUR LITTLE FREAK, FOLEY!
Tucker: Hey! Danny is not a freak!
Dash: GET HIM TO BACK OFF
Tucker, was the kid Dash was messing with: ....whats in it for me
-------- Snippet 4
Danny, saying some questionably immoral shit: What. Why are you looking at me like that.
Tucker: Bro. I mean this as kindly as possible; what the fuck?
Sam: yeah, I'm with Tuck on this one.
-------- Snippet 5
Danny, ranting about Vlad: if it weren't for the laws of this land, I would have slaughtered him
Sam, painting his nails black: I'm pretty sure you'd slaughter him regardless of the laws of the land -- and quit moving, you're gonna mess me up.
Tucker: we've literally seen you debate yourself about this, Dan
Danny: ...you are correct, but it is the principle of things.
-------- Snippet 6
Vlad: I have experience my child, and the money and power attained through using those powers for personal gain, you say. I could train you, teach you everything I know! And all you have to do is renounce that idiot adoptive father of yours.
Danny, was already contemplating committing a Violence: ....
Danny, internally: I'm going to stab him *turns into Phantom*
--------
Funny contrast I realized between Danyal and Vlad that iirc I haven't pointed out yet is that imo, Danyal doesn't rely on his powers nearly half as much as canon Danny does. He falls back instinctually on his League training, and thus sometimes forgets to use his powers in battle. This was prevalent especially early on when he was still getting used to the whole 'halfa' thing.
He incorporates them more often after a year, but still for the most part relies on his own physical hand-to-hand combat. He trusts those skills much more than he does his powers. I'm not sure where he is on a technical level compared to canon, but just to stay safe I'll say he's similar in power skill as canon Danny. Perhaps a little more finessed than him because his League training would probably have him trying to figure out his powers as soon as possible.
But in summary? Danny is strong in hand-to-hand combat, weak in powerset.
Meanwhile Vlad is the opposite. I can't recall if he even knows hand-to-hand in canon, but it makes total sense to me that Vlad Masters wouldn't because he's so confident in his monetary influence and ghost abilities that he sees no need for it.
And he's kinda got some merit behind it. He's very powerful and has 20 years of experience to experiment and fine tune his powers. He's got bite to follow up his bark. He's perfected long-range combat and his ability to phase through walls makes it impossible to corner him, but if you can manage it, then one good hit could probably knock him on his ass.
So in summary, Vlad is strong in powerset, weak in hand-to-hand combat.
And it casts a good contrast between the two of them in that regard. Danny, as a fellow halfa, can follow Vlad when he phases through walls and is fast enough to land a hit on him. His league training as an assassin, albeit rusty, is still deep ingrained enough in him that he can hold up as a rather veritable threat against Vlad without needing his powers.
But Vlad can force Danny to use his powers more often through use of his own. The duplication is the first thing to come to mind: Danny's fast enough to dispel them on his own without powers, and smart enough that he could figure out who the real one is if given a few minute. But that's not always efficient enough.
Good foils for each other that way. Also Vlad's Plasmius design mimics Ra's juuust enough that he looks like Ra's knockoff loser second cousin no one talks about, which only fuels Danny's hatred.
-------- Snippet 7
Danny, ranting about Vlad for the first time: --and it's only made worse by the fact that the little ingrate resembles a cheap knock-off of my grandfather!--
Sam, choking on her water: he what--
Tucker, doing a spittake: HE DOES?

To all the people in the fandom who forgot: Buck grown ass man who has no problems with asking people call him Buck not Evan if he wants them. He told 118 when he was super anxious about first day and they pranked him right before it, he told Maddie, he told HIS PARENTS. If I'm not mistaken he corrected A*by too. So you really think if he would be not ok with being called Evan by Tommy he would say nothing? He would ask to be called Buck. But he DIDN'T. Because he LOVES Tommy calling him Evan
Tommy is not toxic or transphobic to call Buck by his given name and not choosen name as he never was corrected

The homophobic vase and Catch 22
So in my senior year of high school I had to pick a book from a list and read it, and I chose the book Catch 22. Now I'm going to be honest I only read the first 70 pages or so so I don't know the whole thing, but I did learn what a catch 22 is if someone were to reference something being a catch 22.
So, in mag 38 when the vase creature took the book, I started wondering why the reference to Catch 22 specifically, and I figured it out. The way the vase affects memories creates a catch 22.
In the book the way it is explained that I felt made sense to me was this: The setting of the book is the military, and within the book they make it clear there's a distinct notion that if you want to be in the military you must be insane because it sucks. The only way to leave the army is by proving insanity, but by asking to leave you are proving you are sane because sane people would ask to leave, since we already said the insane would want to stay. It's a catch 22, a situation with no escape because it has two conflicting conditions.
The vase takes an item the main owner knew existed, but once the item is missing anyone else other than him does not remember it existing. So it puts into question the existence of the object in the first place, you have a memory of it so it must have existed, but you can no longer find it and anyone you ask about it says it doesn't exist anymore, so it couldn't have existed despite you remembering it existed.
The vase stealing a copy of Catch 22 is a catch 22.

You want me to go full on crazy Tedependent theorist? Because I will, I will go full on crazy Tedependent theorist. What do I have to lose? (Except my dignity but that’s non-existent to begin with so 🤷)
Ted once said this: "I remember being a little kid, sitting in front of the television and watching Queen perform right over there during Live Aid."
He has a moustache that resembles Freddie Mercury’s. He’s even brought up the whole back story as to why he has it. (Also being told that he shouldn’t have a goatee right before he walks down the aisle and then he decided on this moustache and he never looked back…) in the same speech he says “Since I was a straight fella in Middle America working in sports.” Which leads me to episode 11.
In this episode they mention that Freddie Mercury owned Richmond briefly in 1980 and that he tried having “Fat Bottomed Girls” as the team’s song. And Rebecca tells Keeley and Higgins that her father went to art school with Freddie and that Freddie supposedly said that his greatest talent was “flipping straights”. So young Ted saw Queen perform at Live Aid and then when he was older he grew a moustache similar to Freddie Mercury’s? 🤔
Then we have the song in itself. You know who wrote “Fat Bottomed Girls”? Brian May. Who famously has fantastic, long hair.
Whose hair was brought up for the first time, explicitly, in the show this episode? Trent’s hair. And it was brought up by Ted’s mum. And Ted has previously commented on hair as something he seems to like. (He kind of alluded to Trent’s hair in the second episode of the third season but he never outright states that he likes it. And Trent asks Ted if he assumed that Trent could ride a bike because of his hair and the whole vibe). And I’ve talked about hair in THIS POST but the gist of it is that hair has been referenced before, in relation to romantic couples with Roy and Keeley, Higgins and his wife, Sam and Rebecca.
I can’t verify this quote because I don’t have the magazine. But I’m adding it here anyway:
May told Mojo magazine October 2008: "I wrote it with Fred in mind, as you do especially if you've got a great singer who likes fat bottomed girls… or boys."
“Fat Bottomed Girls” is also connected to the song “Bicycle Race”, written by Freddie Mercury, they were released as a single together. And they both reference each other. “Bicycle race” is sometimes viewed as a metaphor for being bi. (Sport as a metaphor, anyone?)
Who doesn’t know how to ride a bike? Trent. Who has a moustache similar to Freddie Mercury? Ted. Who might be bi? Ted.
Look, I told you it’s crazy but I couldn’t help myself. I’ve talked about Queen/Freddie Mercury in relation to Ted before. So I couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by.

thinking abt odalia packing her daughter a lunch in a bag with a bunny on it
Tumblr media
(of course there's a small chance that amity packs it for herself like that, or that ed/em transferred it to that bag to tease her. but it's more likely that odalia packed it in there)
and like, i strongly doubt that amity *wanted* it like that. while she does like cute things, edgy s1 amity would not be caught dead in public with something like that. there's even a chance she left it home on purpose
this is just odalia babying amity on purpose. a bit of fake affection, putting up the illusion of being a doting mother. a lot of condescension, treating her like she's too young to have any agency over her life. but i think there's also an element of like.
she's that certain brand of controlling egocentric parent that tries to make their kids into a miniature version of themself. and a lot of parents of that type tend to prefer their children when they're little; when they're more easily controlled, when they're more of a blank slate to project onto, when they're in that phase of wanting to emulate their parents. so some of those parents cling to those years and try to keep their children from growing up
tangentially, odalia calls amity "mittens" exclusively when she's being condescending or manipulative (same with the one time she called her "princess"). when she's yelling at/scolding her, she calls her "amity"
(by contrast: emira and edric almost exclusively call her mittens, regardless of context. though on rare occasions when they're trying to teasingly baby her, they'll call her stuff like "baby sister" and "kiddo". they've only called her "amity" when talking about her in the third person, or in one instance where they were in serious danger. we don't have many examples with alador, but he seems to call her "mittens" by default, but calls her "amity" when scolding her in that flashback in understanding willow.)
the times odalia switches from calling her daughter that cutesy nickname to calling her her real name are interesting. she flips so readily. her daughter becomes "amity" when she resists her control, when she shows that she's not going to be an obedient little child. when odalia goes from covert emotional abuse to more overt cruelty, she drops the childish nickname (which most of her family calls the girl by default), almost as if trying to disguise the fact that she's hurting a *child*
...and, of course, there's not really any examples of odalia talking to amity where she's NOT either being manipulative/condescending or yelling at/scolding her

It will never not be funny to me how HBO, historically the Toxic Masculinity and Violence network, greenlit Sopranos for Toxic Masculinity and Violence reasons and then instead of just making a violence-filled shallow and flashy mob story glorifying the worst versions of stereotypical 'masculinity' you could possibly imagine David Chase made an excellent and nuanced examination of the social ailments and anxieties of the early 21st century told through the lense of the mob and after that HBO had to start trying to make actual good shows bc the audience expected it from them and now they're the king of prestige TV or whatever and its all because Chris Albrecht, a guy who once strangled a female subordinate in his office during a workplace disagreement, looked at Tony Soprano and went "he's just like me fr"
