So I just finished reading House of Leaves...

Here are my thoughts. I will do my best to avoid spoilers, but will mention a thing or two.

Oh man, that was one hell of a ride. While I myself am a huge fan of horror, this was the first horror book I have read, and what a great experience it was!

Going into the book I already somewhat knew of the madness that lurks inside (that being the quarter inch, and the impossibly long hallway) and was surprised that the madness started on very early. Being the book is over 700 pages long, I sure as hell didn't expect it to start about 60 pages in.

What you don't expect however, is the madness that takes it's toll the longer the book goes on. Multiple storylines, narrators and themes start converging together to the point where everything starts falling into place, to the point it becomes nauseating as exploring the house itself. What I can say however, is that the house is only barely scratching the surface of what is truly going on within these pages.

For context the book is cleverly written as a meta-narrative, as an essay analyzing the film The Navidson Record, a fictional film that does not exist in the real world. What the book strangely does however, is reference actual real life sources when dissecting its premise, to the point where reality and fiction start blurring. The book feels as if it's having a conversation with itself, covering countless of different themes and metaphors that overlap with one another. Given this thing has been analyzed and picked apart for decades since its release, I'm gonna leave it to the experts about the secrets within its pages. (Although I will say this: pay attention. The longer the book goes on the more the different puzzle pieces will start clicking together.)

I was curious as to how a book may scare a reader since I'm unfamiliar with the experience of reading horror, but I will say the longer the book went on the worse it got. If I had to make a comparison, it would be the same feeling I experienced when watching Skinamarink: Dread. A long, droning kind of dread that one experiences when you are alone in your house and all the lights are off and everything is black. And you know no one is coming for you. But you swear you saw something from the corner of your eye. It's the feeling of running up the stairs after turning the lights off and praying something isn't running after you. Dread.

Very quickly things will become nauseating. At first I wasn't scared of the premise of the house: it's a haunted house that defies reality. So? But I found myself not dreading the events that unfolded or the "interesting" formatting of the book, but that the reality of the book itself seemed to be imploding on itself. Spoilers, but the one moment I think where I specifically started spiralling was when Exploration #5 was occurring, and Navidson had to stop and rest with only his matches, he pulls out a book to read and it's....the House of Leaves? The book you're reading right now? But how is that possible? How is Navidson reading the real life book that you're reading, when the fictional events that are pertaining to him are happening right now to him?? What are even the Johnny segments?? (Note: don't read them at work like I did) Why does nobody cited in this book know who the Navidsons are, even though they're quoted directly in reviewing the film?? What the hell is going on???

I made a joke in an earlier post that Navidson wants to fuck the house. I meant this as a joke. What I soon horrifically realized was that others were correcting me in that it wasn't a joke. Navidson wants to fuck the house. But he also doesn't want to fuck the house. But it is also a secret third thing that's literal to the foundation of this story. (No pun intended.) But oh god it gets so much worse.

At the time of writing this, I just finished the book 1 hour ago. I feel like I just stepped off the worst rollercoaster. And I loved it.

10/10 very spooks

On a less serious note I think the funniest moment in the book was when the Chad's and Daisy's teacher, after noticing their strange behaviour at school due to the effects of the house, reasonably decides to pay their parents a visit to talk about it. What the poor lady doesn't expect however, is that she arrives right after the events of the house unfold and the Navidsons are having the worst week of their life, coming to the screaming and crying family while there is a dead body on the floor.

Can we take a moment to appreciate how dramatic Touya was this chapter 😌 In all honesty, it pains me to see Touya’s skin ripping apart with my heart dropping and my jaw when I first saw it (no pun intended 😉) but it's also a REALLY cool ducking looking panel HK made! I don't know how to describe it so I'll word it this way, but it's kind of “monstrous” and I know HK is trying to show this man is not afraid to go past his limit. I also love how in some of his panels by AM’s statue how angelic he looked (not hanging off of the statue but the other one doing this dramatic hand thing.) I just adore Touya’s character and learning more about him and can't wait for the 10 year gap to he revealed!

Dabi is great in this chapter! Hori is having so much fun with the body horror. I mean, he's been doing that with Shigaraki for a while too, just putting these two through the wringer. It's a symbolic choice - the heroes go through hell physically too but come out generally okay while the villain trio come out physically scarred, which matches the turmoil they're going through internally. It's another layer to the theme of heroes having an upper hand in society while those labeled as villains are cast aside and ignored.

I wouldn't call Dabi "monster" looking because he's losing skin and burning up, though. I know what you mean - it makes some people uneasy to see mutilation or gruesome art with blood, muscle and bone showing, etc - but this isn't what makes a monster a monster. People irl do lose body parts electively or traumatically, have disfigurement, scarring, burns, and a lot of other injuries that fit the stereotypical and ableist Hollywood depiction of serial killers or monsters or whatever. Depicting disfigured or disabled bodies like monsters or as evil is a real problem in our society. Here are some articles about this topic:

I know you didn't mean it this way, I'm just putting this here in case people who do view bodies like this as deranged or evil want to read.

But yes! Touya having little regard for his own well being to the point he doesn't care if his skin keeps burning shows how much emotional pain he is in and how much he's been influenced by his father's "stronger = better" mentality. That's been a recurring theme in the story too, even in Shouto's arc.

I'm excited to learn more about Dabi too!

"yo jake!"

you were sitting on one of the park's benches with your best friend while eating strawberry flavored ice cream he got for you, when you heard someone call your best friend's name.

"jake!"

it was louder this time, meaning the person calling him was coming closer. Suddenly one of jake's friends, sunghoon, came into view trying to catch his breath while he sat down on the bench between you.

well now that was awkward.

he looked between you two, clueless to the situation you were in and asked,

"did I interrupt anything?"

he asked and to that question, your cheeks reddened as you turned to look at jake, noticing how his cheeks were also light crimson as he opened his mouth to answer his friend's question

"n-no you sure didn't" jake stammered. but jake never stammers?? and you just stood there, a little sad that jake answered sunghoon's question negatively and you just stood there, taken aback by jake's answer and by his stammering.

"it doesn't seem like it tho, anyways, heesung needs you in practice, jay was late and he almost got yelled at" sunghoon started talking without getting a breath, almost as if he was rapping.

you searched jake's face for a reaction and he didn't even look surprised by ths situation going on at the school's gym.

"well, y/n, I'll have to go, sadly, however, ill try to return you your book on saturday on our picnic!" he told you while he got his school bag, from the bench you sat on every day after school, and started walking behind sunghoon to the gym.

"I'll be waiting for my book!" you yelled and screamed, happy that he remembered the poetry book he borrowed from you, two weeks ago. you see, your and jake's bond was something unbreakable, being friends and classmates from a very young age and being lucky enough to be able to continue this friendship till now. you started packing your bag and put the cup from the ice cream in the park's trashcan while going to your house. there really wasn't anyone at home however you prepared your table fully and made yourself lunch. you sat down trying to find a boring enough movie so that you'll be motivated to stop watching it and study or catch a nap.

it was now 7pm on a friday afternoon and you were currently doing your homework so that you didn't have to do them during the weekend, when your computer started alarming you that there was an incoming skype call by jake. it made you instantly smile and you answered his call watching his face brighten once he saw you had picked up.

"hey"

"hi"

"are you doing homework on a friday night?" he asked, while he looked at me as if I was a weird creature.

"yeah, I don't understand your opposition on me doing my homework on a friday night" you said, the fake offended look on your face made jake laugh and that moment it was like you heard an angel laugh.

"have you prepared anything for our picnic tomorrow?"

oh shIT

you panicked

"I swear to god, y/n y/l/n, did you forget about one of the most important days of the month?" it was his turn to act offended now taking a dramatic pose acting as if he was crying.

you were about to start crying because, hoW. COULD. YOU. FORGET. YOUR PICNIC?!?!

"oH HELL NOH, how could I forget our picnic?!" you stated nervously hoping that he didn't notice the panic on your face when he mentioned the picnic.

"great, I was hoping you remembered about it because, well,,, tomorrow's picnic will be extra special, than just a day on the calendar" he said, he seemed nervous and by his sentence you became nervous too, hoping that something joyful will be behind this "extra special picnic"

"YO Y/N YOU THERE?" he yelled and then proceeded to slap his laptop's screen, just to make sure his computer wasn't the problematical one.

"yeah sorry, my laptop started glitching, see you tomorrow at the park!" you yelled at him and ended the call in a hurry.

you sat up from your desk's chair and walked in front of your mirror

"I now have to go down and prepare for tomorrow's picnic" you said to try and convince yourself to go down and prepare however your plan was interrupted when your phone rang, the name of your other best friend lighting up the screen.

"YANG JUNGWON YOU LITTLE MONSTER" you screamed as you picked up the phone.

" yo y/n what is your proBLEM?!"

"YOU OBVIOUSLY"

"what did I do this time bestie, explain to me please"

"well I was about to go prepare for my monthly picnic with jake but you decided that it was a good idea to call me".

"oooh, jake, the guy that likes you but doesn't know how to tell you"

"plEASE, he doesn't like me, we've been friends for a couple years and he sees me as a good friend"

"ok but like, since yOU like him, why don't you speak to him about it?"

at this point you are heading to the kitchen in order to get ready for tomorrow, since hanging up on jungwon wouldn't happen soon.

"if I tell him I might ruin our friendship, won"

"he likes you too tho, even sunghoon noticed!"

"since when do you hang out with sunghoon?"

"since you were too busy going on dates with jake"

"please, we had study meetings"

"yeah call it whatever you want love"

you tried to respond to jungwon but nothing came out of your mouth so jungwon continued,

"anyways, I'm hanging up so you can prepare for your picnic, by the way, wear those brown corduroy pants I got you for your birthday!!"

"yeah fine, I'll make sure to fill you in on what happened won, good night!"

"night y/n!"

with that you went to prepare some quick snacks for tomorrow and also got some of your favorite jellies from a seven eleven nearby, all because they were also jake's favorite jellies.

you woke up by the sudden sound of your alarm, you didn't even remember setting an alarm but you find have time to worry about stuff like this as you wanted to get up and get ready quickly for the picnic.

your phone rang and jake's number lit up your phone's screen.

"yo jake, bro, homie, fella, how you doin" that was the weirdest thing you've ever, like eVER, said in your life.

"Y/N Y/L/N ARE YOU DRUNK THIS EARLY IN THE MORNING?!"

"of course no jakey, it's 11:29 am, the picnic is in two hours "

" uh uh uh- special picnic" jake emphasized special once again.

" oh well, guess I'll take more time to get ready since its spEcial" you said, mimicking the way he said special.

" I swear to our friendship, y/n, if you're not ready by the time I come to pick you up, consider yourself not my friend" he said sarcastically, adding a laugh at the middle of his sentence.

"oh well, it's your lucky day because I have just started getting ready!" you lied, you walked to your dresser and started searching for that one pair of brown corduroy pants jungwon suggested you wear.

"I'm hanging up jake, gotta go get ready, see you at 1 outside my house!" you hung up without giving him a chance to reply.

bingo

you finally found the pants, searching for a shirt now. you found a white blouse you had got last Halloween for a pirate costume but never wore it. It didn't look like a costume shirt anyway, you shrugged and got into the bathroom to take a shower and get ready afterwards.

You were done with your shower now, the time was 12 pm and you had an hour left before jake got to your place to pick you up.

You put on your clothes and matched a pearl necklace (which was, indeed, a gift by jake) with your outfit, you opted for some classic black converse high tops as for the shoe choice, and with that, your outfit was complete.

You headed downstairs to prepare your basket, full with snacks and fizzy drinks, also getting a light blanket with you, just in case.

You heard a car honk from outside and checked the time, it was 12 : 40, twenty minutes before jake should be here to pick you up. The same honking sound was heard again and you headed to the door to see if it was jake by any chance. It was jake indeed, you got your basket, your keys, sprayed some perfume on and left the house, not forgetting to lock the door behind you.

"well hello there, y/n"

you were ready to tell general kenobi literally at his face, the pun must've been intended as you had a star wars movie marathon some days ago.

"hello to you too, jakey"

You both got in the car and jake turned the music up, a song unknown to you playing on the radio. Jake seemed different today, he seemed nervous, something unusual to him.

"is everything okay jake?"

"yeah why?" he responded while he let out a small laugh.

"oh, nothing!"

The drive went by quickly, however jake had taken you to a place you thought you'd never see again, it was the place where you and jake had first met. A park filled with bushes and sunflowers, huge trees and benches along with wooden tables. You were on the verge of tears, left speechless, you opened the car's door, taking your basket and started running around the park laughing loudly. You were feeling truly happy.

Jake was watching from inside the car, deciding to open his door too, taking his own basket, locking the car and started running towards you.

After running around for some good minutes, you sat on bench and left your baskets on a wooden table, starting to set your food in order for your picnic to start.

You had started eating your second sandwich when jake interrupted you, making you put your sandwich down and turning your attention to him.

"yo y/n, do you remember those love letters you kept on receiving last year?"

"of course I do! I've been searching till this day! but what does that have to with our special picnic?"

"well, I'm the one who sent those letters" jake said, lowering his head and starting to fiddle with his hands.

"well, that was a good one!" you started laughing. Noticing the situation jake was in right now, it only meant one thing, "WAit, you're not joking?"

"not really" he said giggling sadly, lifting his stare and watching into your eyes. You extended your arms and reached out to hug him.

"why didn't you tell me?"

"wait, you really didn't know I liked you? The boys kept on telling that my crush on you was too obvious!" he said, looking annoyed by his friends that moment.

"I mean, you did throw a basket ball at me once that had, "let me take you out" all over it but I didn't think you meant thAT TAKING OUT" you said, laughing at the old memory you had remembered.

well, y/n, would you officially allow me to take you out?" he asked, a glowing happy slice on his face when he noticed your emotionless face, "on A DATE, I mean, not with a basket ball!" he added. With that, you burst into laughter and looked at him, showing him your brightest smile.

"of course I'll let you take me out, on a date, jake"

Do you accept a submission? If you do, can I submit headcanons or AUs to you? 😳✨ I have many AU hcs for Batarou that I wanna share but idk if any of them are good enough, hopefully you wont mind I'm so sorry if it's weird 😅🙏

So I was wondering about Soulmate AU in which there's no soulmarks but instead the couple would experiencing some "soul-bonding" once they have met. Thus, prior the encounter, they wont know who's gonna be their soulmate, sometimes a few unfortunate people don't even meet their own soulmate in their entire life.

The moment Garou and Badd met each other for the first time, their souls were bonded and they could feel the other's emotions: happy, sad, angry, in pain, etc. Not the kind that they could read each other's mind, but more leaning on empathy. Garou and Badd were very baffled to find out they're indeed soulmates in the middle of fight, to suddenly feeling strange emotions that were not their own. Expect them be like, "Wtf are these feelings I have now- OH SHIT HE'S MY SOULMATE?? OH GODDAMMIT--". But in the end they still fighting eachother as they're still enemies, unfortunately.

After Garou went to Monster Association, transformed into a monster, then was defeated by Saitama, Badd could feel Garou's anguish and helplessness feeling. Without any hesitation Badd comes to defend Garou along with Tareo, because even after all that was happened he's still his own soulmate, and Badd also realized that Garou isn't really a bad guy or even a "monster". That inside the broken monster shell and all the self-proclaimed as "Ultimate Evil", there's a "pure-hearted" human who actually wanted to be an ideal hero.

Garou, who could feels Badd's genuine heart contents on wanting to save him and believing on him, was surprised at his attempt on defending him. He had thought Badd already hated him once he knows his soulmate is an enemy or when he saw Garou's Monster form. But Badd proves him wrong as he's standing unyielded to shield Garou from all the other S-Class heroes' accusing eyes. It gives Garou a new hope that one day Badd and him would be reconciliated or have a new fresh start.

Hence Garou ran away from the battlefield, silently thanking Saitama, Tareo, and Badd. Saitama, an extraordinary hero who made him realized his mistakes and giving a new purpose. Tareo, an innocent child who always looking up on him as a hero and consider them as friends, even coming back to defend him so bravely. Badd, his unexpected soulmate who has incredible spirit and softhearted nature, also accepted him as who he is and surprisingly ready to love him (from what Garou feels by their soul-bonding). Garou hoped someday he would ready to met them all.

During the time Garou went fugitive, Badd still can feel Garou's personal feelings despite he doesn't know his whereabouts. On the other side, Garou always feels Badd's worry, longing, curious feeling towards him. And a bit side of secretly pining. Then to make Badd a bit relieved, Garou let Badd knows he's safe and has the same feeling for him through their bond.

One day, they accidently meet again, this time Badd wont let Garou ran away from him for the third times. After lots of civil conversations, Garou has agreed to befriend Badd first before they take the next step of romantic relationship. Badd started to visit Garou's hideout place bringing homemade food or just casually hanging out. Sometimes Badd would asked Garou to visit his house on weekends to have sleepover.

At some point after they're dating, Badd offered Garou to live together with him. Imagine years after Garou and Badd being together, they're finally learned and understanding each other from their soul-bonding, cherishing each other with love to keep their happiness forever. Of course they had moments where they have lover's spat or heavy angst time (either it's about their revealing past or people disapproving their forbidden relationship), but it wont weakened their love as in fact it strengthen them.

Garou and Badd know their relationship isn't perfect, but they're absolutely love all of the imperfectness it feels so true for them. And slowly, people would see them as a perfect match made in heaven 💖

okay this got really long.... i think i’m gonna do a read more.... fucked up when i did that the first time so not doing that again

okay so... i hadn't actually planned to do this ask game... which is why i hadn't reblogged the original post going around tumblr. i was thinking about it though and now you've asked me so i guess i'm doing this lol. (though if anyone else asks i got this like 2 days ago idk if other people are answering faster but yeah i might take 1-3 days depending on how many people ask me and if i make them all as long as this one which i doubt will be a lot).

omg so i decided to go to your archive to try to see like all your gifs and saw this:

... so like i did not look at all 638 gifsets you've made but i did look at a hell of a lot of your gifs and did scroll till i reached the first gifs you’ve made. i decided to not look at any shows i'm not watching/plan to watch/am behind on so as to avoid spoilers. so i still probably looked at hundreds of your gifs and here are my top 7 (yes i'm cheating but like 4 of them have similar styles of coloring so i'm gonna group those together cause i really didn't wanna cut any of them out cause they're so nice) and also 2 honorable mentions at the end cause i wanted to lol.

and i know no one else has done it like this but i'm gonna cause i feel it'll be nice to see one of the gifs from the gifset alongside my comment. so without further ado here they are (in no particular order):

1. Day 12 ❣ Liz Ortecho (Roswell New Mexico)

Damn that gif looks smoooooth and so vibrantly red! I really love your coloring here and especially how it makes the red pop, especially in this particular gif.

2. Day 20 ❣ Maeve Wiley (Sex Education)

So much pink! I love all the pink you’ve got in this gifset, the paler pinks to the hotter pinks! It all works together really well. (I remember when watching Sex Education I thought omg with all that pink that keeps popping up i could (should) totally make a gifset but i never did and i have a thousand gif ideas before I run out so idk if i ever will make one).

3. Day 6 ❣ Love Quinn (You)

Who doesn’t love a pale set? Lovely gifset you’ve made there. (First pun actually not intended and completely accidental.) Seriously it’s really nice, I’m not sure I can really do pale gifsets i think they’re kinda hard so really good job there. (also omg i only just realised now after putting the name of your gifsets that all but 1 of the gifsets i chose are from your 366 characters in 2020 series, totally by coincidence though cause seriously i looked at nearly all of your edits.)

4/5/6/7: I really like the contrast of drained color for face or background + like 1 or 2 colors for the rest of the gifs.

4. #31 ❣ Clary Fray (Shadowhunters)

I really love the emphasis on her hair due to the lack of background color but that you also still get to see some color in her clothes and the lighting. Love the orangey/yellowy coloring paired with drained colors in this set. Also really love this gif below having full color but still matching with the rest of the gifset, the yellow lighting/coloring looks very nice:

5. characters i adore 👑 in 2019 ✔ Cheryl Blossom

Black & white with only red in color is a classic for a reason. Seriously just loving these drained color with a splash of color sets. Keep making more of these!

6. Day 1 ❣ Macy Vaughn (charmed)

Pretty in Pink! Again love all the pink like the Maeve set, ranging from paler pinks to hotter pinks plus combining the drained coloring in this gif. Very nice!

7. Day 4 ❣ Nancy Drew (Nancy Drew)

What more can I say about my love for these b&w/color gifset? Oh I know, why don’t they have more notes??? And keep making them!!
